As lead painter and art department manager for Willet Studios in Winona, Minnesota, Melissa Janda will speak about Willet's large-scale projects at the upcoming American Glass Guild Conference, being held in Mesa, Arizona, from May 22 – 24, 2025.  With 30 years of experience in the field of stained glass, Janda is adept at all aspects of stained glass production, specializing in glass painting, design and restoration work. From St. Agnes Catholic Church in Key Biscayne, Florida, to St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church, Bethesda, Maryland, the results are stunning and speak for themselves. Before entering the world of stained glass, Janda received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, where she majored in drawing with a minor in illustration. Her professional experience with the craft first began in 1993 when she worked at Conrad Schmitt Studios, New Berlin, Wisconsin. Janda then went on to work at Jaeger Studios before leaving to manage her own studio, Melissa Janda Studios in Chicago, Illinois, and later Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for 10 years while she subcontracted work as a glass painter. During her time in Chicago, the artist also worked for a handful of studios, including Curran Glass Studio, Regina Art Glass, Glass Art and Decorative Studio, Two Fish Art Glass, and others. In 2008, Janda returned to Conrad Schmitt Studios before relocating to Winona, Minnesota, to manage Willet Studios' art department in 2014.  In addition to decades of experience, Janda offers Willet Studios a dedicated spirit to the craft, in which she is constantly striving to learn new techniques through the participation in a multitude of workshops and classes. She has a deep appreciation for the great traditions of stained glass and explains: “I have one foot firmly planted in the rich past, with the other stepping forward into the future of contemporary innovations.”  A close look at Janda's work process and unique methodology was featured in an Artist Profile for NPR. The video interview follow's Janda's process in creating a commissioned stained glass piece of art and features some of her favorite personal pieces.  https://www.pbs.org/video/broad-and-high-artist-profile-melissa-janda-stained-glass

Shelley Paxton spent 26 years as a highly regarded marketing and advertising executive stewarding some of the world’s most iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, Visa, McDonald’s, and AOL. In 2016 she walked away from the corporate world to nurture her soul and discover her purpose. She christened herself Chief Soul Officer and called the journey her Soulbbatical. It did more than change her life, it became her calling. In 2018, Shelley opened the doors of her own company with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations, by inspiring them to realize their greatest purpose and potential. Shelley’s intention is to help her clients discover, as she did, a way of being that is aligned with their authentic self (soul) and deeply rooted in a commitment to living and leading courageously. As a certified professional coach, she works with individuals, entrepreneurs, and executives at Fortune 100 companies like Lowe’s, Inc. and Mars, Inc. Prior to becoming a proud corporate refugee, Shelley was Vice President, Global Marketing + Brand, at Harley-Davidson. She was essentially the Chief Marketing Officer, responsible for leading all brand and marketing activity around the world. In her 6+ year tenure, she led significant growth and transformation with her signature authenticity and courage. And she did it rocking leather, jeans, and boots in the Boardroom. Shelley has always been a rebel soul with a nomadic spirit. She’s a self-proclaimed Global Citizen having lived in places as diverse as Istanbul, Shanghai, and New York City, and she has traveled to 66 countries and counting, quite a few of them on a motorcycle. (Oh, and she pierced her nose at age 42.) Shelley holds a marketing degree from Boston College. More recently, true to her soul’s purpose, she graduated from iPEC, one of the premier, ICF-accredited coaching certification programs in the country. She’s a member of 4PC, Rich Litvin’s exclusive community for extraordinary leaders and coaches, and has also been selected to train with Brené Brown on her Dare to Lead work in September 2019. Some additional fun facts: Shelley is a Second City Improv graduate, total book geek, amateur photographer, and avid supporter of the arts. She most recently sat on the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design as well as the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Website:  https://soulbbatical.com/Book:  https://amzn.to/2Yd8R5I

Stephanie Barenz teaches early childhood art at an international school in Shanghai. She shifted from teaching at the university level a few years ago, so we dig into how that change impacted her art making and her teaching. Stephanie also shares great advice for moving forward with your art career during this time while giving yourself grace. I went to grad school with Stephanie, but had lost touch a bit, so it was amazing to hear about her travels, how her career has shifted, and how her artwork is evolving. As an art teacher slash artist based in China, Stephanie has some insight on our current COVID-19 situation. Her school began social distancing and online teaching back in January. She shares how that shift affected her and some tips and encouragement for art teachers still in the beginning stages of distance learning. Shanghai-based artist Stephanie Barenz, creates mixed media works inspired by the layered experience of moving between point A and point B. Her work merges photography, printmaking, painting and collage. Barenz received her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Before living in China, she taught at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and ran her own studio + gallery in Milwaukee, WI. She completed residencies at the Art Students League of New York, Chicago Printmakers’ Collaborative and the Pfister Hotel in Wisconsin. Selected exhibitions include the Art Canton Contemporary Art Fair in Guangzhou, Solonia Art Center in Suzhou, Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin Artist Biennial at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, John Michael Kohler Art Center, and the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee. Barenz has taught art internationally and has presented on the topic of “Collaboration in Art Education” at conferences in Hong Kong and Taipei. Her process is soooo interesting to me! She puts her work through an incredible push and pull between digital and physical processes involving layering painting, prints, photos, and collage. I know I will be getting organized to follow Stephanie’s lead in applying to the directories and art advisors she mentioned. Links to these are below. I also love her drawing prompts project with her students, using Seesaw’s built-in drawing option with the intention of printing the drawings for a collaborative mural later on. IDSA IDC SPECIAL: While attending the IDC Conference, we were able to have a quick chat with some familiar faces! We had the pleasure of speaking with Emily Siira, industrial designer at GE Healthcare. Emily grew up in Grafton, WI and originally started out pursuing an engineering degree, but after facing some difficult obstacles with her health she eventually found herself turning to the field of industrial design (and completely falling in love with it). Emily graduated in 2017 from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, where she built up her design skill set by interning at several companies and while adapting to the health challenges she was faced with. Emily took these challenges and crafted a unique lense to view her world through, which eventually fueled by her desire to improve the overall patient experience; Emily’s engineering acumen, design ability, and life experience combined makes her an unstoppable designer. Thank you @eesiira for sharing your experience and design background! We’ll be watching you as you pave the way for the future of design in healthcare! Thanks for tuning in--be on the lookout for our next podcast! Send us a DM or email at hello@advdes.org to provide us with your thoughts and comments on our dialogue with designers!

His company spun out of research from UW-Milwaukee, focused on ways to treat various inflammatory diseases of smooth muscles, including asthma, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions. “In asthma, there’s inflammation in the lung, and as a result of the inflammation, the muscle in the airways contract and that’s responsible for the difficulty breathing,” he said. “But it’s not just in the lung — there are other conditions in other organs in the body that have a similar disease process.” Stafford, who’s also the director for the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery, explained his company is approaching the problem with a platform technology to create new drugs for various inflammatory diseases. “The current treatments, even in asthma, are unsatisfactory in many different ways,” he said. “Drugs are either not very effective, or in the case of steroids that are used in asthma, there are many adverse effects.”

Hello everyone and welcome to the Photo Forward Podcast, where we explore the stories behind some of the greatest visual storytellers in the world. From their photographic origins, to finding work-life balance as creative professionals, to how to actually make a living as a photographer, videographer, or multimedia creator — we uncover what makes them tick and their shutters click. I’m your host, Ben Brewer. When you hear the word “photojournalist” – What comes to mind? A warzone or conflict photographer? A sports shooter lugging a few supertelephoto lenses around the sidelines of a professional sporting event? Or maybe it’s the fly on the wall, spending countless hours following a singular subject, telling a singular, poignant story with images? Well, in my mind, it’s ALL of that and NONE of that. Let me explainThese tropes exist for a reason, they are often true. But today’s episode gets at the heart of photojournalism– applying our craft of using photos and videos to tell the most authentic, human story possible, visually. Photojournalism is everywhere and today’s guest shares her mindste and outlook as a photojournalist and editorial photographer AND how that’s helped her position herself as an expert in her craft, no matter her location.Ruthie Hauge’s roots are in photojournalism and art.  She received a scholarship to attend Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where she majored in photography and minored in drawing. She was hired as a Staff Photographer by Sun-Times Media in Illinois where she worked for almost 7 years and earning 18 State and National Photojournalism awards.  In the summer of 2012, Ruthie gave up her staff position to focus on her business and her new role as Mom. According to her bio, Before a long day of photography Ruthie's pre-game ritual includes 8+ hours of sleep, a burger, a playlist of Hall & Oates, and an iced white chocolate mocha. On assignment, Ruthie is usually doing whatever is necessary to get the best possible photo, whether it be sloshing through a ditch, balancing on the roof of a skyscraper, flying in a blimp or standing in a bathtub and She loves EVERY minute of it. Ruthie goes above and beyond for her clients while also capturing as much personality, life and storytelling in her images as possible. In today’s episode, Ruthie and I dive in on treating your creative work as a business, how to get connected in new locations and building your tribe, and the importance of finding a partner who shares your values and complements your skills. Shownotes for today’s episode can be found at photoforward DOT media SLASH podcast. So, without any further ado, my interview with Ruthie Hauge.

Welcome Jaymee Harvey Willms!  Jaymee is an artist living and working in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin. She was born and raised in Maplewood, Minnesota. From there she moved to South Dakota where she received her BFA in painting and art history from the University of South Dakota. In 2015 she went on to graduate from SUNY Albany with her MFA in sculpture. Currently, she serves her community as Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and an adjunct instructor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. She believes in fearless advocacy and the power of storytelling. Her artwork digs into fantasy, feminism and where materials meet these two concepts. She has had international residencies, shows her work across the United States, and continues to make work in her studio in Milwaukee’s Walker's Point neighborhood.  She sits down with us in this multi-layered episode to share the journey that has led her to the present. To say she hit a few road bumps on the way would be an understatement. Her formative early 20's were filled with rejection, failures and under-appreciated hard work. But with each of these, new doors opened- paving the way for her to fulfill her passions while becoming one of the Greater Milwaukee Area's youngest female CEO's. In this interview, she also deconstructs the meaning behind her artwork and explains how feminism and an acute perspective on her privilege helps ground her while fueling her passion as an artist and advocate for the community.  We also chat about: How to be a Big Brother/Big Sister!  Her volunteer work in Haiti  Service industry nightmares (we all have 'em) Resources:  Websites: jaymeeharveywillms.com, jaymeeharveywillms.blogspot, http://www.bbbswashco.org Instagram: @jkayeharvey

Interviews by Brainard Carey

LaNia grew up in the segregated city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated with a BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. She devotes most of her time conducting research on the philosophies of self perception, queer and feminist theories, and inherent racial dogmas; while also examining the contemporary works’ of Laylah Ali, Kara Walker and poet, Warsan Shire. The combination of printmaking and drawing inspires her to challenge these concepts and to push beyond the traditional expectations of not only the figure but printmaking itself. Through collage and assemblage she strives to conduct work that pays homage to imagery free from the barriers of social constructs and honest in its vulnerability. Ruthie Hauge, an award-winning photographer joins us today to give us a snapshot of what it’s like living in Madison! Ruthie’s roots are in photojournalism and art. After graduating from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, where she majored in photography and minored in drawing, she launched her photography business and in 2006, and was hired as a Staff Photographer by Sun-Times Media. She has an impressive resume of places she has traveled and famous people she has photographed, including Paul McCartney! Listen to this outstanding interview to hear her journey from Chicago to Madison, and why she fell in love with this great city! This is a community of artists After moving to Madison, Ruthie wanted to re-launch her photography business, so she started networking. She was a little nervous about the competition, as Madison is home to some amazing talent, but after attending network groups like the Madison Chamber of Commerce, The Rising Tides Society, and the Minona Business Alliance, she found the that the other artists and entrepreneurs welcomed her with open arms, and supported her and her business. In fact, she said she just had a record year, and her family has only lived here six months! Keeping up with the Joneses Neil asked Ruthie to describe the major differences between Madison and Chicago, besides just the number of people. Ruthie said in Chicago, people always seemed to be competing for status. She said “keeping up with the Joneses” was a very real way of life...bigger houses, fancier clothes, expensive cars...In Madison, she noticed that everyone is very friendly and genuine, and go out of there way to help each other. She also noticed the focus on locally produced products and the intentional way that people focus on family. Her favorite thing about Madison? The fact that she can be herself. “From here, we can paddle all the way to the ocean…” Ruthie said her family tries to live simply. Her family enjoys outdoor recreation, especially canoeing and kayaking. After they moved here, she said her husband pulled out a map and showed their son all the lakes near their house, to which he responded: “from here, we can paddle all the way to the ocean!” Madison offers endless biking trails and lakes to explore, plus several parks and free places to visit, like the Zoo and the art museum. It’s the perfect place to raise young adventurers, pursue entrepreneurial dreams and goals and connect to a supportive community! Like Ruthie and her family, you may just find a million reasons to say “I Love Madison!” Outline of This Episode [2:30] Ruthie Hauge joins Neil Mathweg in the studio!
