Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update, we have four stories for you this week: Zipline Drone Mishap, Part 108 Progress Update, and the FCC got over 3800 comments. Let's get to it.First up, a Zipline drone near Houston Texas experienced a mishap this week. According to Zipline the aircraft was on its way to pick up an order when it experienced a “mid-flight issue” and deployed its parachute. The aircraft descended under the parachute, coming to rest in a road. No property was damaged and no one was hurt as a result of this mishap. This isn't the first drone delivery mishap we've seen this year, but it is the first that has come down under a parachute. Back in February we talked about an Amazon drone that hit an apartment building in Richardson Texas, and nearly a year ago, two Amazon drones hit a crane in Tolleson, Arizona. There's currently no word on what the issue was with this Zipline aircraft, but we'll keep you updated as we see more. Next, TSA is planning some closed door talks about security, and the meetings will happen AFTER Part 108 final ruling is released. Requests to participate are due October 19th. What this actually suggests is that the security portion of Part 108 isn't ready and won't be ready until after the FAA publishes their portion. The format of these meetings appears to be round table style discussions, with individual views rather than a group recommendation. In addition, there is no public comment period for this. Currently, Part 108 states with OIRA, the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. OIRA has meets booked through September 16th, so publication before then is unlikely. If you're unfamiliar, OIRA's job is to review major draft rules to ensure it helps the public more than the cost to run, keeps paperwork low, and ensures that the new rule doesn't conflict with other agencies rules. Currently, it's unclear if the TSA rule will be included in Part 108 or come as a separate rule. We're following this closely, and we'll update when we see more.Last up, the FCC's Military definition notice got 3829 comments, and we read them all. I'll give you some quick facts and then I'd recommend you go and check out our full video on the proposal. 98.6% of filings oppose the proposal as written, 1575 out of 1584 that engaged the definition of military grade called it over broad, only 30 agree the security risk is as acute as the commission described, and only 1 out of 3829 agreed the economic impact would be minor and contained. That means nearly 50 acres, buildings, residential units, equipment, vehicles, websites, branding and the kind of business names that make explaining your new career at Thanksgiving significantly more difficult.Naturally, Lern immediately wants to know if Air Force Amy is still involved, Moon wants to see the P&Ls, and Rafe wonders whether the oldest profession might also be recession-proof. Finally, a comedy show providing the serious investment analysis CNBC is too afraid to tackle.From there, the crew meets a Nebraska musician accused of double- and triple-booking events, collecting deposits and then allegedly sending multiple clients the same last-minute excuse: the band had been in a car accident. One wedding family had even spent extra money building a custom stage before the musician canceled minutes before he was supposed to perform.For actual working musicians Lern and Moon, that one hits a nerve. Moon talks about nearly three decades of playing gigs without remembering ever canceling a show, while Lern explains why her band generally stays away from weddings altogether. Apparently the secret to avoiding a wedding-band scandal is simply refusing to become a wedding band. Innovative.Then comes the latest technological advancement nobody in the studio actually needs: a $2,000 foldable iPhone.The crew debates the alleged iPhone Duo, foldable screens, whether buying the first generation of anything is a terrible idea, phone leasing, suspiciously glitchy older phones and the ancient blood feud between Apple users and the Droid Boys. Rizz considers buying one despite openly admitting he has virtually no reason to own it.That conversation leads to Rizz's Meta glasses, which Lern would like everyone to remember are capable of recording people. This produces perhaps the most efficient technology review of the morning: not everyone who owns Meta glasses is creepy…but according to Rizz, apparently every creep owns Meta glasses.Things finally move into Crap on Celebrities, where Nirvana is discussed in connection with MTV's Video Vanguard Award and the crew wonders whether Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic could help convince anyone their age to find MTV again. Rizz also discovers the mysterious St. Charles login that caused him to change his streaming password wasn't an international cybercriminal.It was Moon.Moon was just trying to watch Tulsa King.Mystery solved. Password destroyed. Friendship somehow intact.There's also frustration over a Soundgarden halftime performance that didn't make the broadcast, Billy Joel discussing brain surgery and recovery, memories of Joel famously losing his mind over concert lighting, Pantera-related festival talk and plenty more music and entertainment chaos packed into Crap on Celebrities.And because this comedy show apparently needed one more gear, NASCAR drivers Jordan Anderson, Blaine Perkins and Jeb Burton are part of the day's lineup surrounding the big race weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway.Then Rafe prepares Take Five, where listeners try to predict the answers of isolated members of the show for a shot at concert tickets. Nothing prepares you for another morning of daily comedy quite like sleeping through THREE alarms, which is exactly how Lern nearly started her day.That kicks off a very serious investigation into how everybody wakes up. Lern prefers a gradual approach, with increasingly aggressive alarms and songs like “Spooky.” Rizz and Rafe apparently prefer waking up like a nuclear submarine has just discovered an incoming torpedo. Moon wants something gentle enough that his heart doesn't immediately file for workers' comp.Which alarm actually works? Something soothing? “Eye of the Tiger”? “Smells Like Teen Spirit”? A drill sergeant screaming at you while beating trash cans together?Anything is better than accidentally incorporating your alarm into your dream and waking up ten minutes after you were supposed to be a functioning adult.But why bother waking up at all? Apparently AI might kill us by 2030.Rizz brings in warnings attributed to people who have worked inside the AI industry about self-improving artificial intelligence, the difficulty of controlling increasingly capable systems and the possibility that humanity could become collateral damage without AI ever needing to become “evil.” Think less Terminator intentionally hunting Sarah Connor and more humans becoming the anthill somebody paved over while building a highway.That launches Rizz, Lern, Moon and Rafe into a surprisingly deep debate about artificial intelligence, regulation, infrastructure, jobs, humanoid robots, technological progress and whether we should be optimistic about what comes next or start practicing our best Matrix battery impressions.Naturally, this leads directly into death.Because this is daily comedy, and apparently we have transitions now.If somebody handed you an envelope containing the exact date you'll die, would you open it? What about how you die? Would you want to know who attends your funeral? The biggest opportunity you unknowingly missed? Or who secretly has a crush on you?Everyone has a different answer until the crew lands on the most terrifying hypothetical imaginable: learning that you will eventually die by meatball.Do you stop eating meatballs forever? Does avoiding them even matter if fate has already decided? Does a waiter eventually drop a tray and launch your destiny directly into your mouth? Suddenly Rizz is spending the rest of his life looking over his shoulder while tiny meatballs roll ominously down the street behind him.The funeral discussion somehow gets even better when Rafe introduces the concept of a “coffin confessor” — someone hired before your death to attend your funeral and settle scores with people on your behalf. Rizz immediately sounds like a potential customer.Then everybody debates missed opportunities, secret crushes and Moon's claim that when a relationship is truly right, marriage doesn't necessarily have to be hard. Rafe quickly translates this into “get divorced today,” which is definitely not what Moon said but is much funnier for everyone else.Thankfully, National TV Dinner Day arrives before the relationship segment can destroy any actual marriages.The crew takes a nostalgia trip through Swanson fried chicken dinners, Banquet Salisbury steak, Hungry Man turkey dinners, Kid Cuisine, Stouffer's mac and cheese, Bagel Bites and the scorching brownie that somehow always had one renegade kernel of corn trapped inside it.That inspires perhaps the greatest terrible business idea in Rizz Show history: Stepfather's Pizza.Imagine a restaurant built around divorced-dad energy. TV dinners. Pizza. Old TVs at every booth playing MAS*H, Cheers, the Weather Channel and cheaply produced World War II documentaries. Dim lighting. Patchouli. Semi-folded laundry. Smoke alarms chirping because nobody replaced the battery.It's not a restaurant. It's an atmosphere of mild disappointment.The crew also celebrates the upcoming Cheesecake Factory location at West County Mall while trying to identify exactly what architectural theme Cheesecake Factory has been going for all these years. Egyptian? Greek? Mediterranean? Haunted Indiana Jones warehouse? The crew survived AC/DC and Foo Fighters in St. Louis, although several functioning eardrums may have been left behind at the Dome.Today's funny podcast begins with Lern, Rafe and the gang breaking down the concert experience, including Foo Fighters battling the acoustics, AC/DC proving that age is apparently just a number when you're powered entirely by guitar riffs, and Brian Johnson and Angus Young somehow having more stamina than half the people in the crowd. Rafe admits he may have permanently sacrificed part of his hearing for rock and roll, which feels less like a medical diagnosis and more like the official AC/DC ticket upgrade.Then there's the crowd itself. Light-up devil horns. Cigarettes. Vapes. Kids experiencing their first concert. Retired working men desperately trying to make it back from the bathroom before “Back in Black.” People leaning on strangers. People recording everything. Basically, tens of thousands of humans gathering together to demonstrate why assigned seating remains one of society's most ambitious experiments.Rafe even goes from being furious about a guy vaping near him to becoming spiritually invested in the man's ability to blow vape clouds along with AC/DC. Thunderstruck changes people.Unfortunately, surviving the concert only gets Rafe to his next challenge: McDonald's.The late-night order includes nuggets, a Quarter Pounder specifically ordered without onions that arrives absolutely loaded with onions, and barbecue sauce that simply never materializes. The restaurant may technically have been open, but emotionally? Nobody involved was open. Thankfully, the emergency ten-piece nuggets came through and “put Daddy to bed,” which is probably the strongest endorsement McDonald's will receive today.And because this funny podcast refuses to behave like a normal entertainment program, the conversation keeps finding increasingly ridiculous places to go. The crew debates a viral claim involving an MMA fighter supposedly willing to fight a chimpanzee for a massive payday — an idea everyone immediately recognizes as either fake, catastrophically stupid, or possibly both. This naturally turns into gorilla encounters, terrible survival strategies, tranquilizer darts and the general reminder that humans occasionally have way too much confidence.Then comes the kindergarten rumble, because apparently even the smallest members of society are bringing chaos to the program.It's another daily dose of funny stories, weird news, pop culture commentary, St. Louis concert insanity and the kind of conversations that begin somewhere reasonable before Rizz and the gang enthusiastically drive them into a ditch.If you enjoy a funny podcast where a rock concert can lead to hearing loss, fast-food disappointment and completely unnecessary debates about fighting primates, congratulations.
