*TW: Discussion Around Eating Disorders* Ali is the Co-Founder and CEO of Oat Haus, the first-ever spreadable granola. Think the texture of nut butter, but the warm, familiar taste of granola. She founded Oat Haus back in 2018 as it was part of her recovery journey from disordered eating.  She searched high and low for a nut-free spread that resonated with her, but couldn't find one. She came up with the idea to create one out of oats, and Granola Butter was born! Now, Oat Haus is sold at over 5000 retailers across the country, including Whole Foods Market, Publix, Amazon, and Target.  All of this earned her a much deserved 2024 EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Prior to Oat Haus, she thought she would be a doctor. She studied pre-med at the University of California Berkeley, earning a bachelors degree in nutritional sciences. While she ultimately decided not to become a doctor, she did continue in digital health for a few years, working in marketing at Doximity - the largest medical network. -----Past guests include Margaret Wishingrad, Kara Goldin, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Ann Miura Ko, Linda Avey, Sarah Leary, Becky Sauerbrunn and many more.Follow us on Instagram | LinkedIn | YoutubeCheck out the She Leads website-----In Today's Episode with Ali Bonar We Discuss:1. The life of a CEO can be beyond crazy, hectic, stressful, rewarding, empowering, creative, fulfilling, chaotic.... let's just call it an emotional roller coaster! As we learned from Don Bailey (CEO of BlockBusters Tech) a couple of weeks ago, adding some mitochondrial hacks, such as red light therapy and methylene blue, significantly moved the needle in the focus and creativity departments for him. And while today's guest, Ali Bonar, whom is the CEO and co-founder of Oat Haus (yes, that nom nom granola butter that became famous on Shark Tank!), implements both RLT and MB into her wellness regimen, she happily imparts other strategies and insights that help her to stay sane and grounded whilst running a hyper-successful company. It is an amazing story with her beginning a company in her parent's garage and, in due course, winds up with her products in Target! As you may imagine, the origin story of Oat Haus begins well before she started the company in that garage. Many years prior to that, Ali was facing nutritional "information overload" that placed internal pressure on her to eat perfectly all the time, which caused food to become very rigid & stressful. Ultimately, she developed an eating disorder that spanned over 10 years.   Eventually, Ali retrained herself to have fun with food. With the support of her therapist and those who shared their own journeys with her along the way, Ali dedicated herself to helping others feel less alone. In recovery, she re-introduced nuts into her diet (something she had previously restricted for years), but her stomach couldn't tolerate them. While repairing her gut, she searched high and low for a healthy and delicious nut-free spread. Nothing resonated with her, so she decided to create her own, and the world's first oat-based spread — Granola Butter® — was born. If you found the information in today's episode with Ali particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. Working hard has gotten a bad rep lately. When you're creating something you're passionate about, it's unrealistic to think that it won't be hard work. But there's a difference between running yourself ragged because you're trying to live up to someone else's expectations or you think that's the only way you'll be successful, and working really hard on something you're trying to bring into fruition. I'm joined by Oat Haus founder and CEO, Ali Bonar, as we discuss what entrepreneurship really looks like, why the journey and not just the destination has to be worthwhile, why “working too hard” is just another thing for women to police themselves about, and why no matter what your career is it's ok to work hard.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://unfuckyourbrain.com/313

Ali Bonar is the founder and CEO of Oat Haus. After struggling with food & body image issues for over a decade, she searched high and low for healthy and delicious nut-free spread's. Not really loving anything currently offered at grocery stores, she took to her kitchen and started making concoctions of her own. After many iterations of her original creation she finally figured it out! And so Oat Haus was truly born out of Ali's frustration with the lack of great taste and FUN in this food group. Oat Haus is the first-ever spreadable granola. With the texture of a nut butter, but the taste of an oatmeal cookie (and a bunch of other delicious flavors) it is an absolute game changer and truly making waves in the food industry as we know it.

In todays episode, Chad and Kelley talk to the founder of Oat Haus, Ali Bonar. Born in Japan and raised in San Diego, Ali has been passionate about food for as long as she can remember. Her deep-rooted passion for nutrition inspired her to study Nutritional Sciences at UC Berkeley and eventually launch @avokween, where she dove crown-first into the Kween lifestyle. Ali wholeheartedly believes that overall wellbeing is often achieved off-the-plate: nutrition is important, but human connection (and pizza with friends at 2am) are essential. Through the community she has built she's started the incredible business Oat Haus- the first ever spreadable granola available in over 1,200 stores. In this episode we talk to Ali all about how to recognize the signs of disordered eating, healing and recovery and a path to freedom with food, starting a self-manufactured food business in the consumer products space, scaling products, selling to Whole Foods, and influencer marketing. How Leaders Can Build Relationships Through Transparency

The Modern Customer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 28, 2022 33:40

It's not every day you see a CEO dancing on TikTok. But being vulnerable and transparent is one of the reasons Ali Bonar has seen incredible growth and success with her company, Oat Haus. Consumers are moving more towards sharing real experiences and less about hiding behind the perfect filter. Customers crave connection and want to build relationships with transparent leaders—even if that means showing off their dance moves.  Ali started sharing her journey online long before she ever considered being an entrepreneur. As she recovered from an eating disorder, she shared the ups and downs of her physical and mental health and began to grow a following.  Ali's journey led her to create granola butter, and Oat Haus was born. But in her new role as a founder and CEO, it was only natural for Ali to continue sharing a behind-the-scenes view of the business. As Oat Haus grows, Ali shares authentic updates along the way, including everything from dancing in her living room to an inside look at creating new products.  Ali strongly believes that sharing helps customers feel like part of the journey. It's refreshing to see a business that isn't hiding behind a façade or trying to come across like it has everything together. Ali's goal is to take customers along for the ride and make them feel so involved that no matter when they see her content, they feel like they've been there from day one.  But sharing online doesn't come easily to everyone. Ali recommends starting where you're comfortable, even if that means photos without video to start. A good starting point is simply filming what you do throughout the day. Take people through your life as a business leader and show what life is like behind the curtains. As your comfort level grows, Ali recommends planning content for the entire week to hit different topics, including informational videos about your company, stories about what it's like to be a leader and fun content. A variety of content builds strong connections and resonates with a variety of customers.  Even planning and great content don't lead to overnight social media success. It takes time to grow a following, and a lot of how a post or video performs is based on the Instagram or TikTok algorithms. Even then, it's hard to see the ROI of social and a direct connection between storytelling and sales. But it's all about building the brand, showcasing the human side to the business and establishing your company and yourself as a leader who cares about people and wants to share.  The moments you're the most scared of sharing are often the most worthwhile things to share that resonate with your people. In the end, Ali says not to overthink it. Just be yourself and feel comfortable bringing your whole self to work and your community. You'll naturally develop strong customer relationships as you share your authentic self and brand. ________ Blake Morgan is a customer experience futurist, keynote speaker, and author of the bestselling book The Customer Of The Future. For regular updates on customer experience, sign up for her weekly newsletter here.

On the cusp of our Winter 2021 events, Taste Radio's hosts discussed the speaker agendas for NOSH Live and BevNET Live, which include retail executives from Erewhon, Whole Foods, Foxtrot and Earth Fare, along with founders of several high-profile brands, such as Fly By Jing, Dreampops and Super Coffee. They also highlighted notable new brands and products, including wellness shots, vegan snacks, an innovative “shimmering sparkling water” and the largest peanut butter cup in the world. This episode also features an interview with Dave Carpenter, who is the master blender for Redemption Whiskey. Promoted as “leading the rye revival,” Redemption markets a range of super-premium whiskies that are intended for modern drinkers to rediscover rye and the spirit's storied history in the U.S. by way of complex, yet approachable expressions. As part of our conversation, Carpenter spoke about how Redemption has aligned its marketing and innovation strategies with the palates and lifestyles of modern consumers, why its distillation process isn't included in the brand's story, how its bottle shapes and package design play important roles in how customers perceive the brand and the company's approach to finding the balance between premium and value when it comes to pricing. Show notes: 0:47: Talkin' Turkey, BTS At The WCB, Water, Shots and Nuts -- The hosts discussed their respective Thanksgiving dinner plans and Ray's annoyance with the holiday's traditional centerpiece, what attendees can expect from a packed speaker lineup at NOSH Live and BevNET Live, why they're impressed with Todd Carmichael's foray into the water business and a “wholly” impressive line of plant-based snacks and meal. 22:16: Interview: Dave Carpenter, Master Blender, Redemption Whiskey -- After a brief chat about Carpenter's impressive mustache, he and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke about what differentiates rye from other whiskies and the boom, decline and reemergence of the spirit in the U.S. Carpenter also discussed Redemption's on- and off-premise education strategy, why a growing number of master blenders have degrees in chemical engineering and whether trends fit into the brand's innovation planning. Later, he explained how subtleties in Redemption's bottles are intended to speak volumes and why the brand's flagship product is priced relatively affordably for a premium whiskey. Brands in this episode: Country Archer, Tea Drops, Fly By Jing, Vita Coco, Pop & Bottle, Hella Cocktail Co., Loftiwater, Siii Water, Magic Mind, So Good So You, Vibi+, Oat Haus, Elephant Amaro, Reese's, Wholly Veggie, Troop Beverage Co., Gigantic Candy, Hubs Peanuts, Miami Cocktail Co., Goop, Redemption Whiskey
