Our reliance on ultra-processed foods is making us hungry and prone to overeating, in addition to negatively affecting our health! Today, we'll hear some compelling stories that will help us take action on cravings, hunger and overeating and nutrient deficiencies. While we might think those front-of-the-box exclamations about the cereal having Vitamin A or the granola bar having added Vitamin D are saying we can still get all our nutrients – the ones designed to keep us healthy and satiated – from those bar code foods, well Marty Kendall is here to share with us what his data show and it's pretty shocking. But we'll take you from shocked to small steps so don't miss today's chat!   LET'S TALK THE WALK! ***NEW*** Facebook Group for Our Community! Join here for support, motivation and fun! This week I discuss the importance of satiety when it comes to constructing your daily meals! As I mentioned in the last micro podcast, eating slowly is one piece to creating satiety while another piece is eating nutrient dense foods. Food quality matters and I referenced both the Food Satiety Index performed by The University of Sydney in Australia and Marty Kendall with Optimising Nutrition. The main takeaways from them are:- Processed carb-and-fat combo foods like croissants, cakes, and doughnuts scored poorly. High-protein foods like meat and fish scored well - GLP-1, our primary satiety hormone, tends to be influenced by nutritious food  - Protein %, potassium, fiber, calcium, and sodium have the greatest influence on satietySo to conclude, if your goal is to lose weight and improve your metabolic health over the long term without unbearable hunger, you need to increase the satiety value of the food you eat per calorie. Cardio is Destroying Your Results - The Science on Optimising Nutrition & Fitness For Women with Holly Baxter

Most of us want to be in good shape and improve our health span, not just our life span. In this episode, Angela talks to dietician and science educator, Holly Baxter, about the most effective ways in which you can get lean, achieve optimal health levels, and remain vibrantly full of energy in a way that is the most beneficial for your body and mind, and why excessive cardio might actually be holding you back. KEY TAKEAWAYS If we engage in cardio too regularly, and carry a calorie deficit, it can negatively impact the energy available for muscle recovery when we need it most. The best way to increase lean body mass and reduce body fat is through incorporating a high protein diet and moderating caloric intake. The latest research into fat loss seems to suggest that there are few advantages in diets that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat vs diets that are high in fat and low in carbohydrates. Everyone is unique and has a bespoke set of requirements. The best coach or mentor will always prescribe an approach based on the individual's needs, and not a one-size-fits-all programme, as these rarely work. BEST MOMENTS 'I definitely had a strong focus on how to optimise my physique for performance' 'It's important to recognise that everybody has a unique preference for different foods' 'What is going to govern the rate of weight loss is the degree of calorie deficit' 'You've got to learn about your client and meet them where they are at' VALUABLE RESOURCES Take My Biohacking Quiz and Get A Free Personalised Report - www.yourtotalhealthcheck.comBecome an Insider of The Female Biohacker Collective and have Angela as Your Health Coach in Your Pocket - www.femalebiohacker.comFree Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fastingPodcast Shownotes - www.angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts Thanks to our Sponsor: Bon Charge -  Get 20% off at www.boncharge.com/Angela ABOUT THE GUEST Holly Baxter is a Dietitian and Science Educator that has been involved in the health and fitness industry for some 13 + years, where much of this time has been dedicated to providing her clients and followers around the world, with evidenced-based education, and to putting up the good fight against the many misconceptions surrounding food, nutrition, and exercise. In 2011, Holly graduated Deakin University as a Food Scientist and Nutritionist and went on to complete her Master of Dietetics in 2013, and now practices as a Clinical Dietitian and Online Science Educator. Holly's heavy involvement in sports in early life, coupled with her passion for health and nutrition, has led her to extend her skill set as a coach, on to becoming a well known author, speaker and one of the leading females in the Nutrition and Fitness industry. Holly has, and continues to participate in the sport of bodybuilding as a professional physique athlete, claiming x2 World Championship-level wins in the Natural Fitness Division. She is also the co-founder and director of a number of health and fitness related businesses, including the renowned nutrition coaching app Carbon Diet Coach, and subscription based services, The Workout Builder, her online exercise program platform and REPs, abbreviated as Research Explained in Practical Summaries, which takes complex research and simplifies it for the average person to understand and apply. From 2016 through 2022, Holly also helped scale her former nutrition coaching company Team Biolayne, and evidence-based supplement line Outwork Nutrition, along side former husband Dr. Layne Norton. She has more recently launched her own all female coaching business venture, Holly Baxter LLC, which focuses exclusively on the unique health related needs of women, and mission to become the global leaders in the dissemination of science based health education, specifically those of females. “Womens Health and fitness is where my true passion lies! As a Clinical Dietitian and Coach, with first hand experience in the field as a professional athlete, it is my goal to empower my clients to achieve ultimate success through their commitment and dedication to a life of knowledge and learning." I had a great chat with Marty Kendall today. We share a common interest in the nutrient quality of the food we eat. Marty has spent years understanding and collating information on the foods that provide the best quality of nutrition for the calories that they contain. With his background in civil engineering, he has brought his ability to analyse complex data into the nutritional world. He began with a strong interest in improving the health of his family. His wife is a type-1 diabetic and his son was recently diagnosed with type-1.   His initial goal was to figure out the best nutritional strategies for his family. He is now sharing these with the world through his optimising nutrition programme. He provides mini-courses in micronutrients and a data-driven fasting challenge and explains these in more detail during this podcast. Marty is really making a difference in the nutrition world and helping us all understand more about the quality of the food we are eating.I want to say special thanks to Marty's wife for being a guinea pig and allowing her data to be shared publicly to help others. This is real life stuff and provides invaluable insights. Paul Burgess has been a great mate, supporter, and mentor throughout my journey to quantitatively define optimal nutrition. When he first invited me on his podcast, I put him off. I felt I still had more work to do before promoting what we were doing at Optimising Nutrition (and also felt a strong sense of imposter syndrome). I've now had the privilege of being a guest on his podcast three times. So it was an honour to finally return the favour and have him on the Optimising Nutrition Podcast. Paul has experience in just about every form of tracking, hacking, testing, and biohacking from his four decades of experience in the health space. His podcast is a constant flow of deep dives into the latest testing and functional medicine trends to manage complex issues. While he's recently become a massive advocate for Data-Driven Fasting, he's also mellowed. He has become more passionate about encouraging people to do simple things that work first before diving into rabbit holes of tracking and hacking that often cause plenty of stress and anxiety (not to mention expense!). Likewise, worrying about the latest test, tracker, or supplement is a waste of time if you don't have your nutrition, sleep, stress, and activity dialled in. Once you get the basics sorted, most people find they don't need to waste their time, money, and limited headspace on new-fangled fancy stuff! It was fantastic to talk with Paul about what he considers the ‘big rocks' that most people struggle to get in place and pursue what makes you happy.

Dr Rachel Gow, is a Nutritional Neuroscientist, Neuropsychologist and Neurodevelopmental specialist who focuses on ADHD and Nutritional Neuroscience Her book “Smart Foods for ADHD and Brain Health” explains the vital role nutrition plays in influencing cognitive function, behaviour and mood and in this episode, she discusses with Angela how you can effectively eat to support good brain health. She explains how cognitive function is impacted when there is a deficit of the brain selective nutrients that underpin the function of the brain and shares great practical advice on how to achieve optimum nutrition for great brain health KEY TAKEAWAYS The fundamental role of nutrition is often overlooked but what you eat ultimately affects your brain structure and function at both molecular and cellular levels 65% of the dry weight of the adult brain and retina is made up of complex specialised and unique fats called lipids It's estimated we have around a hundred billion neurones each coated in a myeline sheet made up of DHA insulating and aiding neurotransmission A child with optimal DHA can break down a question, understand and compute an answer A child with sub-optimal DHA will still be trying to figure out what the question is We need DHA and EPA for brain function in self signalling and for the regulation of specific systems such as serotonin and dopamine Serotonin governs feelings of well-being and happiness, dopamine is critical in motivation and feelings of pleasure and reward Adequate Omega 3 supports both dopamine and serotonin systems functioning well When dopamine is low individuals self-medicate to try and normalise the level by adding other things The quality of the maternal diet is critical for the well-being of the mother and the development of the baby's brain It's hypothesised that babies born prematurely miss out on the biomagnification process of fatty acids and lipids in the last trimester There is a bi-directional relationship between the brain and the gut so the health of the gut is critical We have to move beyond the prescription pad, combining strands of science to create a personalised, integrative approach BEST MOMENTS ‘Your brain is an organ like the heart and there are specific nutrients required to fuel the brain and to keep it working optimally' ‘Gut health is critical for brain health' ‘A multidisciplinary approach combining strands of science provides an amazing insight into the complex relationships within the body'   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website   Dr. Rachel V. It was such a pleasure to speak with Lisa about her journey through Data-Driven Fasting and the Nutritional Optimisation Masterclass. In the past, Lisa said she made abysmally slow progress with Weight Watchers and got rejected from the super-expensive Spark People program for being too broken! Then, after her husband suggested she was taking way too many supplements, she found us. Once she learned to solve the puzzle of her nutrition and give her body the nutrients it needed to thrive, everything fell into place, losing 16 lbs (7.3 kg) or 13% of her body weight. And most importantly, she feels great! In this chat, we discuss: What's your why? Why did you want to go to the effort of focusing on the nutrients in your food? What other approaches had you tried? What did you learn from DDF vs the Masterclass? How much weight did you end up losing between DDF and the MC? How did your body fat change? Which supps did you find you no longer needed? How has your need for hypothyroid meds changed? How do you feel about your optimised diet vs relying on supps? How have your energy levels changed? Digestion? What are your typical meals? What do you eat most often? What advice would you give you people just starting out? How to use your blood glucose meter as a fuel gauge for weight loss | Lori Leeke

Lori is one of the primary reasons that I created DDF. One of the first articles I wrote on Optimising Nutrition five years ago detailed how to use your glucose as a fuel gauge to optimise your fasting routine. Lori found this a couple of years ago and put it into practice. Over the past few years, Lori kept contacting me to tell me how well it had worked for her. I had had it in my mind to go back and develop the concept more. Lori's story and encouragement motivated me to develop DDF into a complete system to dial in your feasting and fasting routine. While listening to Lori's recent podcast with Gin Stephens, I had a lot more questions. So, I thought it would be great to chat with her about her journey a little more and to share her wisdom from doing this for two years. We got to chat about: How did you get started using your glucose as a fuel gauge? What was your motivation to try this approach to weight loss and metabolic health? Why is/was it important for you to be/stay trim and healthy? What approaches did you try that didn't work so well? What did you find that worked well for you? Why does simply focusing on limiting calories not work for most people? You're a big fan of Trim Healthy Mumma. How are they different? Why do they advise that is it important not to mix fat and carbs in a meal? Lots of people are talking about carb cycling or metabolic flexibility. What are the benefits of incorporating carbs? Who do you think alternating between carbs vs fat for energy doesn't work well for? Many people would struggle to think in terms of low fat vs low carb meals and switch between them. What sort of meals do you enjoy for a low fat vs low carb meal? Why is it important not to be locked into one dietary dogma? You spend a lot of time sharing what has worked for you. Why are you so passionate about this? Who do you think DDF would be most beneficial for? Thanks again, Lori, for your support, encouragement and inspiration, leading the way for thousands of others to take up Data-Driven Fasting.

I am excited today to be joined by Marty Kendall. Marty is an engineer who seeks to optimize nutrition using a data-driven approach. His interest in nutrition began eighteen years ago to help his wife Monica gain better control of her Type 1 Diabetes. Since then, he has worked to develop a systematized approach to nutrition tailored for a wide range of goals. Marty has been sharing his learnings at OptimisingNutrition.com and has developed Nutrient Optimiser and Data-Driven Fasting to guide people on their journey of nutritional optimization.  Monica was only ten years old when she was diagnosed with diabetes. She suffered decreasing control of her health until she and Marty met about fifteen years later. When they got married, neither Monica nor Marty knew anything about managing diabetes. Marty had no idea what he was getting into, but he learned quickly and found a doctor who taught them both a lot by turning their situation into a maths game. That intrigued Marty and motivated him to strive towards having healthy pregnancies by managing the numbers. Be sure to stay tuned today to hear Marty’s story and learn about his data-driven approach to good health.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN Marty shares the story of how he and Monica learned to control her diabetes by managing the numbers. Marty talks about the first step he took in helping to support his wife before she started riding the keto wave. Different people process macronutrients differently. Marty discusses the problems he had when he tried to optimize food choices for people with diabetes. Marty talks about the nutritional dogma that contributed to many metabolic diseases that we see currently in westernized countries. What energy toxicity represents. Marty provides an overview of the carb insulin index. Why you should check your blood sugar when you feel hungry, and not after you have already eaten. Whether or not you should avoid eating when your blood sugar rises more than thirty. Marty gives his take on biohacking devices like CGMs and glucometers. Using your blood sugar as a fuel gauge. Marty talks about how insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance influence people’s fat threshold. Marty describes some of the more common nutrient deficiencies. How Marty’s Nutrient Optimiser app blows away dogma and helps people select the right foods for their nutritional requirements. Navigating eating out. Marty reveals his recommendations for overcoming emotional eating, weight loss and insulin sensitivity, protein intake while on a maintenance diet, and gaining more muscle mass. “While carbs and protein raise insulin in the short time, the fat on our body and the fat in our diet have the most significant influence on our insulin levels.” Those are the words of Dr. Mowll’s guest today, engineer and creator or the website Optimising Nutrition, Marty Kendall.   Marty Kendall is an engineer with an interest in nutrition who seeks to understand things numerically. His wife is a type 1 diabetic and he has a family history of types 2 diabetes and obesity. He has created a system to prioritize low insulinogenic nutrient-dense foods that he and his wife, Monica, have been using to improve low blood sugar, increase energy and to reduce depression and anxiety (that so often comes with blood sugar dysregulation). Marty says he’s been able to step up to a new level of vitality, reach his ideal weight, and reverse his pre-diabetes with this system.   In today’s episode, Marty talks about how he uses his engineering background to understand and optimize blood sugar health. He also discusses the personal fat threshold and how it relates to insulin resistance, diabetes, and blood sugar dysregulation. Dr. Mowll and Marty Kendall talk all about calories and how they fit in — and how overeating even the right foods can still prevent you from burning fat and losing weight. Welcome back KD Tribe! Today we have our first recurring guest, Marty Kendall from Optimising Nutrition. If you remember, Marty was the very first guest on the show. It only made sense that going into episode 21 that we would circle back with Marty.  If you have noticed, this show focuses on whole foods and nutrient density, and we believe wholeheartedly in what Marty is doing with his tool the Nutrient Optimiser.   Marty is an engineer whose interest in nutrition was spawned out of necessity trying to better manage his wife's Type 1 diabetes as well as his own family history of type 2 diabetes and obesity.     In early 2015 he started blogging at OptimisingNutrition.com.  He tries to provide clarity around many of the confusing and conflicting issues in nutrition, often using a quantitative approach.     While his blog posts can sometimes go deep on a topic, he has also worked to develop a shortlist of optimal foods to suit different goals by balancing the sometimes-competing parameters of nutrient density, insulin load and energy density.      His most recent project is the Nutrient Optimiser which consolidates his thinking into an automated system that reviews a person's current diet to provide a shortlist of recommended foods to provide the nutrients they are not getting enough of while supporting their goals, whether they be diabetes control, weight loss, bodybuilding or athletic performance.     In this episode we cover: Optimal blood sugar and ketones for nutritional ketosis   Why you shouldn’t chase high ketone levels if your goal is fat loss   Why insulin isn’t the devil that we’ve made it out to be   Why you may be overweight but not necessarily insulin resistant   Why “Personal Fat Threshold” is important and why you should care   If you are limiting calories, why you should focus on nutrient dense foods   Why your adipose tissue is actually a protective mechanism   The role of protein in the diet, and why we shouldn’t fear it in keto   Why hormones matter and why calories still matter.   Why tracking blood ketones becomes a waste of money for most people.   You can listen directly at these links! iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ketodontist-podcast/id1252428998?ls=1 Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/ketodontist-podcast Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Itp6hga6aknibumb4gy7eveduqq Podcast Homepage: http://ketodontist.libsyn.com   OPTIMAL KETONE AND BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS FOR KETOSIS: https://optimisingnutrition.com/2015/07/20/the-glucose-ketone-relationship/   DOES INSULIN RESISTANCE REALLY CAUSE OBESITY?: https://optimisingnutrition.com/2018/04/12/does-insulin-really-resistance-cause-obesity/   TED NAIMAN’S DAM FAT STORAGE INSULINOGRAPHIC EXPLAINED: https://optimisingnutrition.com/2018/05/03/ted-naimans-dam-fat-storage-insulinographic-explained   OPTIMAL PROTEIN SPARING MODIFIED FAST FOODS & MEALS (PSMF):  https://optimisingnutrition.com/2017/06/17/psmf/   Facebook Listener group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1971127613205341/   The Nutrient Optimiser by Marty Kendall: https://nutrientoptimiser.com/   Ketogains Bootcamp which Sara is currently going through: http://www.ketogainsbootcamps.com/   Ketogains Macro Calculator: http://ketogains.com/ketogains-calculator   Lyle McDonald’s book Rapid Fat Loss Handbook (discussing PSMF): https://store.bodyrecomposition.com/product/rapid-fat-loss-handbook/   Dr. Benjamin Bikman’s Lecture: 'Insulin vs. Glucagon: The relevance of dietary protein' https://youtu.be/z3fO5aTD6JU   Affiliate Link to Robb Wolf’s Keto Masterclass:  www.learnketonow.com

We've all heard that carbs and sugar raise blood glucose and insulin. But the same applies to fat and ketones...what?!?   The thing is that any source of energy in excess is a signal for the body to utilize it efficiently. High amounts of any fuel, whether that be glucose, fatty acids, or ketones in the bloodstream increases your body's energy usage and consequently may promote storage hormones such as insulin. Now, wait a moment! I thought being in ketosis immediately made you burn fat. Is this a scam?!?   The thing is that there's a difference between ENDOGENOUS KETOSIS - burning ketones from your own adipose tissue - VS EXOGENOUS KETOSIS - burning ketones that come from dietary sources. Keto has become very popular due to its sheer effectiveness but there are many misconceptions that need to be clarified. Higher amounts of ketones isn't necessarily indicative of good metabolic health and it won't equal fat loss either The key to longevity is to become keto-adapted and teach your body to produce its own endogenous ketones through caloric restriction, low carb diet, fasting, exercise, and other similar biohacks   That and much more in today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm Siim Land and our guest is Marty Kendall from Brisbane Australia. Marty runs a popular blog Optimising Nutrition and it's an amazing resource for knowing how certain foods affect your insulin and how to optimize your micronutrient intake   We're going to talk about: What's the difference between the glycemic index and insulin index How much insulin does protein raise The unheard of situation of fatty acids and ketones raising insulin How exogenous ketones may actually shut off fat burning Why more ketones isn't better for health nor weight loss What's the difference between endogenous and exogenous ketosis How to optimize your nutrient density instead of energy density Which micronutrients you need to get from your food And Much More... We had some network issues during the recording that lowered audio quality during a few minutes of the show but they're not that bad so bare with me   To support this podcast, then I'd appreciate if you could leave us a review on iTunes and follow me on social media. Here are the links to the podcast on all platforms Link to the Video Podcast on YouTube Link to the Audio Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Download mp3      Show Notes Marty's Blog - How Exogenous Ketones May Raise Insulin   Based on research, good metabolic health depends on blood sugar and insulin. That's why I'm eating a low carb ketogenic diet and incorporate some intermittent fasting into my day. To interpret lab results your typical doctor will use standard reference ranges that are based on averages from a random sample of people.  Your labs are compared to these ranges to evaluate your health status and to guide potential treatment.  If reference ranges have such an important role, wouldn’t it make sense to have them reflect optimal health rather than typical health? We’re looking at some recent and large-scale studies today that suggest your cholesterol numbers don’t mean what mainstream medicine might have you believe.  Dr. Tommy Wood, MD, PhD is with me to discuss optimal reference ranges for cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as other lab tests that are more reliable for predicting cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. A headset is recommended to listen to this podcast and prepare for your brains to get cooked! Topics we cover are: The dogma of pointing fingers at one food item in mainstream news. What it means to be ‘Metabolically Healthy’. What is too little, too much and adequate protein intake? Does high protein intake equate to a sugar bomb via. gluconeogenesis? What would happen if you eat nothing but protein? Why some people aren’t getting high level of blood ketones? Could you potentially eat too much fat on a low carb diet? Keto acidosis, metabolic acidosis and consequences of very high ketone levels. Various factors that impact basal and bolus insulin levels. How insulin impacts fat loss process. Why you may be skinny and seemingly fit but unhealthy at the same time. How nutrition can be optimized for zero carb dieters. The importance of modifying nutrition to support existing and changing lifestyles. The story and purpose behind the Nutrient Optimiser. The potential to improve and reshape the food industry using the Nutrient Optimiser. How people can figure out their micronutrient recommendations. Possible existence of additional micronutrients and importance of real food consumption. Resources people can utilize to educate themselves on food and nutrition. About Marty Kendall: In early 2015 Marty started blogging at optimisingNutrition.com. In 2010, with his New York Times Bestselling book The Paleo Solution, Robb Wolf presented the answers that enabled me to recover my health. His podcast of the same name launched my business and connected me with the incredible partners who helped shape NBT into an online clinic that has now helped over a thousand athletes achieve optimal health and performance. In his new book, Wired to Eat, Robb carefully examines the neuroregulation of appetite as this is necessary for eating enough to be healthy, but not so much that we see weight gain and the plethora of Western degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration and type 2 diabetes. Robb's primary goal with this material is to remove the guilt and shame many people feel around making changes in their food and movement. We STILL need to do the work, but if we understand this may legitimately be a challenging process, we can avoid the sense of failure and self-loathing. Mixed into all this Robb talks about sleep, photoperiod, stress, digestion, the gut microbiome, autoimmunity. It’s a lot of material, but we think it covers most situations and will be helpful whether one is struggling with weight or is a top tier athlete.
