Rose and Rachel are back on the pod! It has been a minute since I've had them on together, so you already know the vibes were 100 percent. I was super sick and low on energy while recording this one, so I'm especially grateful to them for carrying the episode with their honesty, warmth, and humor. We read a listener's email that, of course, sparked a deeper conversation about toxic exes. Rachel has shared bits and pieces of her past before, but this time she opened up. Hearing her reflect from a place of healing and self-awareness was powerful. She can hold space for the pain, even the parts she may never fully understand, with compassion and grace. That kind of growth is so honorable to witness. Trigger warning: This episode includes discussions of domestic abuse, so please take care of yourself while listening. Your mental health always comes first. And although the topic might sound heavy, this episode still had so much fun, laughter, and joy. The energy between all of us is something I'm really proud to share. I hope you enjoy it. In today's episode of the Busine$$ of the V, Rachel and Dr. Dweck have an incredibly inspiring and motivating conversation about how overcoming a disease can encourage you to start a business and help other people going through the same journey. Our guest today is Rachel Bartholomew, the founder and CEO of Hyivy Health, a company that has created the first intelligent and holistic pelvic rehabilitation device for women experiencing symptoms from pelvic cancers and diseases. Pelvic health issues are extremely common in women; in fact, one third of all women worldwide are experiencing these difficulties and are not receiving adequate education and support. Rachel Bartholomew is a strong, thoughtful, and confident woman who has survived cervical cancer and is now able to understand and help other women in need. The idea for starting this company and creating her own pelvic health product came from times when she was feeling vulnerable and trying to find a distraction from her complex and painful history with cancer. She is now a true hero in the field of pelvic health, and her business continues to innovate pelvic health solutions for all women. Stay tuned to learn more about Rachel's journey, as well as how Hyivy Health came to be and the pelvic rehab devices they are bringing to the women's health market. You can subscribe or listen to previous episodes of the Busine$$ of the V podcast by clicking here. TOPICS COVERED: Meet Rachel Bartholomew, a remarkable woman whose complicated medical history inspired her to launch her own business and help other women facing similar challenges. Rachel tells us about her entrepreneurial background and how diverse her career has been so far. Nothing is more genuine and inspiring than a personal story, such as how Rachel Bartholomew's battle with cervical cancer led to the formation of the company we're discussing today, Hyivy Health. We learn that Rachel B. truly lives by the adage ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade', as she created her product while recovering from illness. Dweck explains what cervical cancer is and walks us through Rachel's treatment process. Our co-host Rachel Braun Scherl wants to know if the doctors had previously prepared and educated her on the procedures. The decision-making process in these situations is so quick, says Rachel B., and you often have to make them without all the necessary information. Rachel B. believes that patients should be informed of all the consequences and implications of their decisions, since doctors frequently overlook the quality of life that ensues. Alyssa is curious about how Hyivy assists other women who face some or all of the difficulties that Rachel had gone through. Our guest's product is essentially an improved version of a vaginal dilator, and it comes with a variety of benefits such as thermal therapy and auto-dilation. There is a clinician software that reviews the data so that the users can get valid feedback and track their own progress. Rachel Braun Scherl notes that the company is still going through the FDA approval process and wonders when and how they will be available. We learn that the product will be simple to use and that patients will be encouraged to use it more regularly at home (which they typically do not). The entire process is envisioned as an in-person interaction in which people come into the office and discuss their issues. Rachel Braun Scherl wonders how the company raised the funds and which factors contributed the most to its overall success. Dweck elaborates on all possible applications for the product in question, stating that it is not just for cancer patients. Rachel B. explains that one of the most difficult aspects of the process is walking the investors through the numbers as many people are not aware of the prevalence of pelvic health issues. Being open and sharing your personal story is always the best approach, according to Rachel B., who adds that many investors are then inspired to share their own experiences with pelvic health issues in their families. The name of the company, Hyivy, stems from an elaborate wordplay and primarily refers to female body parts. HOT FLASH: According to CDC, HPV is thought to be responsible for more than 90% of anal and cervical cancers, about 70% of vaginal and vulva cancers, and more than 60% of penile cancers. QUOTES: “I took a break from entrepreneurship, said I was going to take at least a year and not start a company, and I really failed miserably at that.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “I realized that there was this 84-year-old technology called a vaginal dilator that I had actually used 11 years prior for a completely different situation, and I realized that nothing had changed in those 11 years.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “It's important to recognize that your history of having cervical cancer typically hits people at a very young age, so 28 is not an unusual age.” (Dr. Dweck) “You built a business from the hospital, which is so brave and really about turning lemons into lemonades.” (Rachel Braun Scherl) “One of the things that you go through when you go through this is that the decision making is so quick, often without all of the information at the table or it slides through as you're going through.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “What I've created is an enhanced version of the dilator, and essentially we're using a combination of a number of different therapeutics as well as sensors to be able to track and monitor progress.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “One of the things that does keep people engaged in these tedious programs is to have these frequent visits; people fall off the wagon all the time because it's a chore.” (Dr. Dweck) “We're not solving endometriosis, but we're helping with the management of all the things that endometriosis patients go through, and a large piece of that is chronic pelvic pain.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “We're also looking at the female sexual function index, looking at adherence, looking at the use of pain medication and ER visits, and a couple more of measurements.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “Just for edification, the female sexual function index is a validated questionnaire, so it's valid no matter in which study you're doing it.” (Dr. Dweck) “We initially see this being an in-person meet-up with the doctor so that the users can actually go through that education piece which is so important.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “We've been in this space for a long time, and it's very difficult to raise money when you're talking about unpleasant and uncomfortable topics.” (Rachel Braun Scherl) “Dilators and your device in particular are not only for people who have had cancer. They are used for endometriosis, for other types of surgery, for the atrophic vagina, and the incontinence issues.” (Dr. Dweck) “Part of that discussion with investors is that, unfortunately, I have to spend a lot of time walking them through the numbers and through the market.” (Rachel Bartholomew) “What you're saying and doing, educating the investors as well as potential users, is really so important.” (Rachel Braun Scherl) FURTHER RESOURCES: Website: https://hyivy.com/ Rachel @LinkedIn LINKS FOR BUSINE$$ OF THE V: Website: www.businessofthev.com Dr. Alyssa Dweck: https://drdweck.com Rachel Braun Scherl: www.sparksolutionsforgrowth.com/about-rachel-braun-scherl/

Today's guest, Rachel B. Tiven, is an established civil rights leader and change-maker who is coming to the Graduate Center to get a Ph.D. in History. As a lawyer and nonprofit leader, she has become a leading voice on issues involving LGBTQ rights, immigration rights, and voting rights. In 2018, after serving as CEO of Lambda Legal, Tiven managed the voter protection hotline for the Georgia Democratic Party and the Stacey Abrams gubernatorial campaign. She followed that role with a one-year residency at Columbia Law School, which coincided with the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Intrigued, she began researching the history of the women's suffrage movement and started the @DailySuffragist social media project. This semester, she comes to the Graduate Center to deepen her knowledge of the movement for women's full citizenship in the United States. “I want to understand what works, what works to get people to give up power, to share power with others, especially what works to get people to share power without violence,” Tiven says. “And I think that's what I have found so compelling about the story of women's search for political citizenship in the United States.” Listen to this far-ranging and timely Thought Project conversation.

Cognitively demanding tasks provide important opportunities for students to develop an understanding of mathematics; however, they are challenging to launch and implement. The authors designed a secondary methods unit on launching tasks. Participants in the study were enrolled in five different methods courses. Using a noticing framework, findings suggest that by engaging in the unit, preservice teachers developed a greater understanding of the four aspects of an effective task launch. When viewing video examples, preservice teachers were able to talk about the four aspects of a task launch with increased specificity. Additionally, they began to identify ways of developing common language without reducing cognitive demand. We discuss implications of this work and offer suggestions for future teacher education research. Special Guests: Christopher W. Parrish, Mark A. Creager, and Rachel B. Snider.
Born in a Broward County jail into a family of addicts, Rachel quickly realized her childhood wasn't like her friends'. While her mom prostituted the streets of South Florida, Rachel was left alone for days. And when she was finally arrested, Rachel was left for good. After her mom's arrest, Rachel turned to opiates and lived with a friend, whose father raped her daily and fueled her growing addiction. Constantly trying to avoid her mother's behavior, Rachel's addictions only repeated the cycle, and led her down the same path filled with drug-addicted pregnancies, prostitution, police and horrific physical abuse. Rachel and Bryan discuss doctor shopping, giving birth at a methadone clinic, outrunning DCF, and how easy it is to lose ourselves while trying to save everyone else. Rachel also shares how, after years of being treated like a lost cause, she finally found recovery. You don't want to miss this incredible true story. Episode 19 is an interview with Rachel Kaplan following the murder of George Floyd and the Global response to end racism during the pandemic. Rachel B. Kaplan is a native New Yorker who thrives on helping people. She's Bikram Yoga Certified and has been teaching yoga and breath work for over 13 years and doesn't plan on ever stopping. She decided to go back to school and earn her 2nd degree in Food and Nutrition Sciences. In 2017 she graduated from University of Alabama and has chosen the path of Holistic Health Coach. Currently, she works with professionals, all over the world, to explore what's holding them back from living their version of good health and helping them shed light on what action steps they can take that will bring about positive change. She is passionate about helping people know their truth so they can take action towards living their healthiest life. This means they can be better in their work, relationships, and take massive action towards their life purpose. REVIEW SONGS FROM THE LAST EPISODE Marc: Naked Mikey: Trash FIVE MINUTE SHOW SUMMARY Episode 12: The Message - Written by Joss Whedon and Tim Minnear It is the second of three episodes (Trash, The Message and Heart of Gold) that were not broadcast in the original 2002 Fox run. PLOT SYNOPSIS MIKEY: The Message opens on a space station with a huckster selling admissions to “proof of alien life.” Simon and Kaylee are on a date viewing it which turns out to be a cow fetus. After an awkward joke, Simon offends Kaylee, and she storms off. Outside, Inara tries to convince Mal to let her help fence the Lassiter they stole in the previous episode, “Trash,” but Mal insists on keeping her out of that side of the business. MARC: Mal checks in with the station postmaster, who passes along two packages along with Serenity's mail. Jayne arrives to find that his mother has sent him a home-knitted cap, and he proudly dons it. The others observe the headgear with a mixture of amusement and sarcasm. The other shipped item is a huge crate addressed to Mal and Zoe. They open it to discover a dead body, the corpse of Private Tracey. MIKEY: Flashback to seven years earlier at the Battle of Du-Khang. As a young Independence soldier, Private Tracey, calmly prepares a meal behind cover, an Alliance soldier sneaks up on him. Just as the latter is about to shoot, Zoe appears behind him and cuts his throat. While she lectures the boy about stealth, Sgt. Reynolds comes screaming over some obstacles and crashes into their position. Tracey is injured when the Alliance zeroes in on them. Mal and Zoe grab Tracey and their shell-shocked lieutenant and bug out. MARC: Back in the present, aboard Serenity, the crew finds a recorded message from Tracey. He apparently anticipated trouble from some unsavory associates and has asked them to ship his body home to St. Albans, finishing the message with an old saying from the war, "When you can't run anymore, you crawl, and when you can't do that...well, yeah, you know the rest.” Back on the station, an Alliance soldier, Lieutenant Womack, threatens first to imprison, then to burn to death the postmaster, who quickly tells the man and his aide who left with the body. MIKEY: On Serenity, Mal and Zoe and Inara are enjoying some down time when the ship is shaken by a warning shot from an Alliance craft. Lt. Womack hails them and demands to board Serenity. The crew mistakenly think that Womack is after the Lassiter. When Womack mentions "that crate", however, Mal realizes he's after Tracey's box, and stalls for time while they take apart the crate to discover what secrets it might contain. Finding nothing, they decide to have Simon autopsy the hapless soldier, but the doctors' first incision causes the "dead" man to leap up and struggle with the gathered crew. MARC: After he calms down, Tracey confesses that he is smuggling illegal internal organs. He was supposed to deliver the implanted organs on Ariel, but he got a higher bid. Unfortunately for him, the original buyers killed the new customer and are now after their stolen "merchandise". Another shot from Womack reminds them of their immediate peril. After a brief pursuit, the Alliance ship finally catches up with them. MIKEY: Book does some checking on their Alliance pursuers and discovers some anomalous behavior, and he recommends to Mal that they allow the Feds to board the ship. Tracey overhears some of this conversation and pulls a gun on the crew. Annoyed at Tracey, Mal orders Wash to call the Feds. As Tracey fires at Wash, Zoe shoots him in the chest, injuring him but not killing him. MARC: Lt. Womack and his men enter the cargo bay. He tries to cow the smugglers with his Alliance authority, but an unarmed Book arrives to explain why he won't be using that authority, given the pains he's taken to keep his extracurricular organ-dealing activity from the local Feds. Faced with a surprisingly direct threat of death from the preacher, Womack decides to depart, dismissing the "damaged goods" in Tracey's gravely-wounded chest. MIKEY: Tracey belatedly realizes that Book's confrontation was part of a plan, one that he ruined by threatening the crew and getting himself shot for his efforts. Mortally wounded, he asks Mal and Zoe to really deliver him home this time; they agree, finishing the earlier saying, "When you can't crawl anymore, you find someone to carry you." Excerpts from Tracey's message can be heard as the crew of Serenity solemnly returns the fallen soldier to his grieving family. Pubs are often dark places. I'm sure dark things have been discussed. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't feel they are any darker than what we find on social media. I don't like social media. It brings out the worst in people. It makes the world a more vile place than it actually is. And so I avoid it, like the plague. Fair comparison. That's one of the big reasons I changed things up this year. But before we get to this year, let's talk about last and the many things happening in the pub. In this show, you will hear some of my picks of the best Celtic bands of 2018. You'll enjoy new music from the Brobdingnagian Bards to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Sectionals is here and we are here to be disgusted by the utter lack of dramatic tension as, SMHG Favorite, the Trouble Tones face off against the New Directions. The episode is named "Hold On to 16" but they don't even sing the Mellencamp song, so we can all breath a sigh of relief. Some highlights of the episode are Angst!Blaine, Tina committing fraud, and Rachel B. Berry being a voice of reason and moral fortitude (???).Please consider supporting us at patreon.com/sandmhategleelinks to things!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sandmhategleeTwitter: @sandmhategleeEmail: sandmhateglee@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
