Narrative Salchow and Sayenko Dual interview episode: Christina Salchow-Hommen from Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, Germany. Her presentation at RehabWeek2019 was titled “Characterization Of Optimal Electrode Configurations For Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation.” The talk presented her findings from a small trial which included 5 participants living with spinal cord injuries. In the trial, they were trying to find the optimal placements and size of surface stimulation electrodes to elicit a response rectus femoris and the tibialis anterior muscles. The study found variability in electrode placement but some commonalities at the T11 level spinal circuit level. Let's catch up with her in our interview. Dimitry Sayenko from the Center for Neurogeneration at Houston Methodist Research Institute gave a talk about Neuromodulation of Spinal Networks to Recover Motor Function: Underlying Mechanisms and Clinical Translations.” His talk discussed the differences in the epidural spinal stimulation clinical trials being conducted at the University of Louisville, UCLA and at EPFL in Geneva Switzerland. There were differences among the labs but he found the key is enabling versus inducing movement with stimulation and argued that the intense exercise regimes from some of these studies is not necessary. Let's listen in on his interview. Takeaways: Electrode placement, along with stimulation parameters plays an important part in the responses to transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation. [0:00] Ladan introduces the episode with an interview by Jen French of Neurotech Reports with Christina Salchow-Hommen at RehabWeek 2019. [1:10] Salchow-Hommen introduces herself and her affilitation with technology for people with impairments for restoration of mobility. [1:38} Discussion of the importance of electrode placement, adjustment of stimulation parameters between the 5 volunteers and patient reported preferences for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation for people with paralysis. [3:35] Salchow-Hommen discusses the need to better monitor the brain during stimulation and better measurement tools to quantify reported feedback. [4:44] Ladan introduces the episode with an interview by Jen French of Neurotech Reports with Dimitry Sayenko at RehabWeek 2019. [5:17] Sayenko introduces himself and addresses his perspective of how the brain reacts to spinal cord stimulation for the restoration of motor response after paralysis due to SCI. Nearly 80% of spinal cord injuries result in some form of residual function. [6:41] Involvement of the brain with restoration of movement along with neuroplasticity for connections in the brain. [8:28] Coupling traditional therapy with spinal cord stimulation. He finds that the intense rehab is not necessary but the first few sessions are critical. Still the technology has an accumulative effect. [9:45} Discussion of the introduction of electrical stimulation following a spinal cord injury. When to introduce it in therapy. [10:50] Restoration of gait and the timing of stimulation. His lab found timing was not critical. [11:50] The introduction of machine learning into this therapy would be helpful. Sayenko expresses his excitement at RehabWeek.

Episode 12! Welcome to the Whiskey Ring Podcast where we're bringing you the people who make whiskey interesting. New tagline – let me know what you think of it. Today, we're going across the Great Lakes to visit Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I'm joined by Ross Salchow, a longtime employee whose title would never cover the range of work he does.   Great Lakes was the first distillery I ever visited in person. Picture it: Milwaukee, 2016. I was on a business trip for the American Jesuit Colleges conference and had some free time to explore. I'd never been to Milwaukee, let alone Wisconsin, and with the Brewers out of town I decided to take an Uber over to this distillery. Great Lakes is the first distillery in Wisconsin since Prohibition. When I visited five years ago, there were one or two whiskies, a few brandies from local products (including cherry), a regular gin and a barrel-aged gin. This was before I started doing tasting notes or had a collection of any kind, but I brought back bottles of the barrel-aged gin and cherry brandy because they were so damn good. Since then, they've done nothing but grow. Absinthes, bourbons, single malts, gins, nothing is off limits for this team. As much product as possible is sourced from Wisconsin to keep the local flavor, and to their credit, when something can't be sourced from WI (barley, for example, doesn't take well to WI winters), they're transparent about it coming from somewhere else. Ross was probably there the day I visited. Hell, for all I can remember, he could've been my tour guide. He's been there for many years now and knows the ins and outs of the place better than anyone. We chat about successes and failures, why their bottled-in-bond gin couldn't be called that until last year, so many nitty gritty topics you won't find anywhere else. I'm the first to say that I like craft, but not every craft distillery is ready. Count me in for saying that Great Lakes is here to stay and deserves a try. I can't wait to get back there and try more of their new products. In the meantime, you can visit them at greatlakesdistillery.com, @greatlakesdistillery on social media, and keep an eye out for their products as distribution grows.  If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram and Facebook and follow @whiskeyring on Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on whiskeyinmyweddingring.com.  If you like what you hear, please consider supporting the site and the podcast. È la poesia intitolata If, “Se”.

It helped massively with keeping focus.Summary of questions with timings below.1min– Earliest memory – at the age of 3 at the golf driving range getting a whack from her sister!3min– Skating from the age of 3 – the family were all very much into the Ice rinks – Meagan was very much following her older sister onto the ice.5min –Competing against each other in the early years but to get to the elite level, Meagan wanted to move away from home to get this, her sister didn’t. This was the dividing line. This was the decision Meagan made at 14. It was set in her mind from 6 or 7 that the Olympics was her goal. Her dream!7min – where did the level of self-belief and determination of going to the Olympics8min -  Having crazy dreams without the talent at the highest level. It was her hard work and determination was the key driver. Getting advice from a skating judge that she could have the potential and from there, her parents put their faith into her career.10min– the belief was always coming from Meagan about her dream.11min– Skating & sport was her pure focus and drive12min – Sacrifices made at this time – moving away from home at 14! Living with different families and having to live 3 hours from home. This was expensive as is skating in general. Her parents both had two jobs.13min – Progression and growth trajectory over the next few years was steady but slow! In 2006, attend the national championships. As a single skater, she finished 4th. This was a huge setback. This was a big time for reflection.15min – Coming 4thwas a catalyst to drive her forward again. She then moved to Montreal and started to skate pairs.17min – Change from single to pair skating – this was a pretty smooth transition as Meagan was ready for a change and she embraced it. Dealing with the challenge of team work and having to be right even if you weren’t felling right.19mins – After skating with Craig for 3 years, they were focusing on Olympic qualification for the upcoming Olympics in Canada. Showing up at national they finished 3rd. Missing out again. This was a huge inflection point. It was a big moment for Meagan. However, a Coach, now Meagan’s Husband, believed in her and a new partner, Eric, as a team!22mins – Early challenges with Eric, her new partner. Learning to overcome these on timing, size, athleticism. After about a month, they realized that they, as a pair, could do jumps and throws that no other team could! Both were good single skaters, and this was their strategy. The Triple Lutz was a jump that set this pairing apart and this would lead to their success.26mins– 4 years of continued success as they built up to the winter Olympics in Sochi. Natural progression every year. Entered the Olympics, they thought this was their chance of winning. In the moment, Meagan was too focused on the result, instead of the personal goal. She felt she missed out on the great Olympic skate. A great performance. In Skating, you can’t control the result. You are handing over control to the judges. Going into the 2018 Olympics, this was the change in focus.29mins – Planning for the next Olympics. In fact, they started to plan day by day instead of a 4-year plan. Sick of living in this 4-year cycle. Now just putting one foot in front of the other.Learning the Throw Quad Salchow. Focus on this for 2 years.32mins– Fear of losing taking over. Still not sure they’d make it to the Olympics. This was the peak!! So, should they retire now in 2016. They had the great skate. So, another point of reflection needed. Meagan was regaining her motivation, Eric was losing his.34mins– Sport psychology – changing the mindset. Still at the low in 2017 as a team. Felt lost and just not in the right place. A graduate of Juilliard, Susan Lipkins is one of the most respected bowmaker in the country and has made bows for Hal Robinson, Alex Hanna, Jeff Turner, Max Dimoff, Thomas Martin, and other major bassists worldwide. We talk about Sue's early years growing up in Queens and studying with Homer Mensch and John Shaffer at Juilliard, her inspiration to become a bowmaker, the multitude of small steps that go into making a bow, tonal characteristics of different strains of pernambuco, and advice on choosing a bow that works for each individual. About Susan: I grew up in Queens, New York. I attended the High School of Music and Art, followed by receiving my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Double Bass performance from the Juilliard School of Music. I had long been intrigued by the double bass instruments I and others played and also found the bows fascinating. The professional musician's lifestyle and auditions seemed daunting to me. Instead I sought related areas of the classical music scene in which I might become involved. A position opened for me to work in sales at the bowmaker, William Salchow's shop. Soon a bench opening for rehairing arose and I learned to rehair bows, which suited me well. William Salchow generously agreed to teach me how to make bows in the hours after the shop had closed. Yung Chin, who was then working in the Salchow shop, also gave of his time, guiding my training. Once on my own, Francois Malo of Montreal and David Samuels, now living in Israel, contributed generously to my early training. As a result of my contact with bass teachers from my music training, I was surrounded by bass players and as a bass player myself, I naturally gravitated towards the making of bass bows. Even early on, as a well trained player, my bows were made from the player's perspective. As my bowmaking skills developed, so grew my understanding of playability. My intuitive sense of bowmaking developed from the player's foundation guided my process and I found myself specializing in the making of bass bows, in both the French and German styles. I have attended the Oberlin Bowmaking Workshop in summers since 1999, where with my colleagues, there is rich exchange of information, methods, and ideas. In the summer of 2000, I studied with Stephane Thomachot and Mitsu Sasano in Paris, which advanced my foundation in the French style of bowmaking. With this firm grounding in the classical French style, my bows are not only beautiful but real "players' bows". I make my bows to order, one at at time, striving for the highest quality with each bow. I have since gone on to make bass bows for many of the most prominent players in many major symphony orchestras.
