POPULARITY
I propose to tell in non-technical and popular language the story of some of the most remarkable episodes in the history of sea power. I shall begin with the first sea-fight of which we have a detailed history—the Battle of Salamis (B.C. 480), the victory by which Themistocles the Athenian proved the soundness of his maxim that "he who commands the sea commands all." I shall end with the last and greatest of naval engagements, the Battle of Tsu-shima, an event that reversed the long experience of victory won by West over East, which began with Salamis more than two thousand years ago.I shall have to tell of British triumphs on the sea from Sluys to Trafalgar; but I shall take instances from the history of other countries also, for it is well that we should remember that the skill, enterprise, and courage of admirals and seamen is no exclusive possession of our own people.I shall incidentally describe the gradual evolution of the warship from the wooden, oar-driven galleys that fought in the Straits of Salamis to the steel-built, steam-propelled giants that met in battle in the Straits of Tsu-shima. I shall have something to say of old seafaring ways, and much to tell of the brave deeds done by men of many nations. These true stories of the sea will, I trust, have not only the interest that belongs to all records of courage, danger, and adventure, but also some practical lessons of their own. This is a collaborative reading.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Hey XRadioXers its another month and time for another episode of your favorite podcast and this one is about a game. Not just any game it's...THE GAME! THE BIG GAME! The Superbowl, right? NO! It's the Mondegreen Game. Its the game where Matt reads lyrics that people think are correct, but aren't, and then Jayce and the special guest try to see who gets the most correct. This episode's special guest is Sluys. He's like the Edge, Cher or Jayce because he only needs one name. Sluys went to NMU with Matt and Jayce, he worked with the both of them at WUPX and he got a much better career after graduation than Matt and Jayce. Did you know that during college Sluys and Matt shared an apartment? And in that apartment there was a legendary piece of furniture called The Worm. Nobody knows who manufactured The Worm' and nobody has ever seen The Worm again after graduation. It is legend. Another fun fact: Matt, Jayce and Sluys have all slept in The Worm, individually and not together. Get your mind out of the gutter people... Matts hair wasn't THAT nice. ;)Tune in and listen to these three play THE GAME!If you're interested you can revisit the first time Sluys joined us on Episode 6.Thanks for listening and we'll chat again next month here on XRadioX!

She has been a lawyer since 2001 and has transformed from being an exhausted perfectionist workaholic to now living a life of delicious chaos, juggling mum life alongside her own legal business and her spiritual wellness business. In March 2012, while hanging out the washing, Alicia started to spontaneously channel one of her Spirit Guides, an Ascended Master called Goenga who spoke to her using her own voice (like Whoopi Goldberg in the movie, Ghost). This was the start of her channeling journey. Six years later, Alicia pushed through her massive fear about what people would think and honoured her calling. She came out of the ‘spiritual closet' and shared with her friends and family that she is a Channeler. She now channels a team of guides and angels and has founded the Global Soul Centre. Alicia loves to help people to thrive, enjoy life more and reconnect with their soul and remember who they really are - eternal pure love and magnificent light beings. Alicia has written a book called, PURE ENERGY - The Busy Women's Energy Guide to Thrive. She has a passion to help humans understand themselves as energetic beings. Picture this - you're stuck in a vicious cycle of diets, chasing an unrealistic image of 'perfection' planted by society and amplified by social media. Our guest today, Alana Van Der Sluys, knows all too well about this harmful cycle and its repercussions. Alana bravely shares her personal journey from dieting to an eating disorder and the societal pressures that propelled her down this path.We also discuss the concept of intuitive eating and its role in sustainable weight loss. When I was little, I loved to run around carefree (and mostly nude or in skimpy crocheted bathers) in the sunshine on the beach. There was nothing to hide. No shame. No fear of being photographed or sexualised. It wasn't long before that changed, and growing up in the 80s & 90s, a lot of shitty judgement, criticism, stigma and shame that was dished out to young women stuck! I learned to hide parts of myself, feel shame and worry about how I looked and what men thought of my body, and so much more. In this solo episode, I share why these layers of conditioning, expectation, protection, and shame are limiting and what's available when you strip them back. Tune in to hear me peel back another layer and share some of the things that I love and turn me on!
In this super short episode, I reflect on the power of the first time, why it's so memorable and how you can use it to access turn on at any time. Listen in and you'll leave with a simple trick to turn you on!

Food, fitness and body obsessions are way too common. A large part of this is due to the illusion social media creates. We are killing ourselves for this vision of perfection that we're supposed to attain, and yet most of the images out there are modified with filters and editing, creating completely unrealistic and toxic expectations of what our bodies are supposed to look like. According to Alana Van Der Sluys, a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and the founder of Freedom with Food and Fitness, most of her clients come to work with her due to comparison and obsession. Michael is joined each week by Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes, for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia's history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on Roy Rene - 'Mo McCackie' Roy Rene, born Henry van der Sluys born on 15 February 1891 at Hindley Street, Adelaide, was the Australian comedian and vaudevillian. As the bawdy character Mo McCackie, Rene was one of the most well-known and successful Australian comedians of the 20th century whose greatest asset was his superb timing. This enabled him to 'get away with' the suggestive double entendre while he never technically said anything obscene. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thousands of Kia Sportages in New Zealand could be recalled over fears engines could catch fire.Just recently, more than 57,000 Kia vehicles in Australia were recalled over a potential electric fault that could lead to the vehicles catching fire, even with the engine turned off. After being made aware of this recall, Kia New Zealand has announced that it's in the process of releasing a similar recall that will include approximately "15,000 Sportage and 120 Stinger" vehicles in New Zealand. “The safety of Kia owners is paramount and, whilst there haven't been any historical incidents of this specific issue happening in New Zealand, we are proceeding with due caution and will issue a recall notice,” said Managing Director of Kia New Zealand, Todd McDonald.“We will be proactively contacting all owners of affected vehicles and asking them to take their vehicle to their nearest authorised Kia dealership for inspection and repair, the cost of which will be covered by Kia New Zealand.”The specific vehicles in question over in Australia are the Sportage models built between MY2016 and 2021, and Stinger models manufactured between MY2017-2019. Kia is yet to confirm whether the New Zealand recall will affect these same vehicles. - with text by Andrew Sluys, DrivenLISTEN ABOVE

The 100 Years War was a seesaw clash between the French and English thrones. The first third of the war saw great victories won by the English, at Sluys and Crecy the English forces smashed their continental enemies. After a one-sided peace treaty was declared, the Channel separated foes settled into an uneasy Cold War. With the advent of the Black Death, both sides suffered massive losses to their populations and a shift in the makeup of society. Farmers and land workers tried to find safety and work in the cities of Europe, changing the power structure of the feudal system dynamically and ushering in a new world. The Black Death also brought about an even more ardent Christianity, as people sought for reasons and hope in a world seemingly devoid of both. With the death of Henry V, the hero of Agincourt, the political waters became very murky. For the next few years, both the French and the English claimed the throne of France, but only one side had the power to back their claim. The weak and vacillating Charles VII was forced to be a bystander in his own land as he watched Henry VI’s regent, the Duke of Bedford, assert control over most of France. With the help of the Duchy of Burgundy, the destabilizing Black Plague, and a lack of inspired leadership, the English could claim most of France north of the Loire river and seemed to be on their way to a win in the 100 Years War. The English certainly could not have planned for a young girl to hear the voices of former queens and current Saints Margaret and Catherine. The Battle of Sluys was the first major battle of the Hundred Years' War. There were a few battles before it but nothing that compared to the size and ramifications of Sluys. The Hundred Years' War was a series of wars between England's Plantagenet Dynasty and France's House of Valois and lasted 116 years! The main cause of the war was the rightful rulers of France. In 1328 King Edward III of England was the closest living mail heir to the French throne. However, when King Charles IV of France died Edward was passed over for a more distant relative Philip of Valois. If you are enjoying the podcast please considering leaving a rating on iTunes. In 1340 against all the odds - of numbers and quality - Edward defeated Philip VIth's Great Army of the Sea at Sluys. The impact on morale, English and French was dramatic. But none the less Edward's campaign still failed at the walls of Tournai, and his problems of debt and discordant allies rose like a flood around him.
