Does Your Work Need A New Story? with Dr. Tom Nelson

What if your work isn't just a job—but part of God's bigger story for your life? For some, work is a source of stress, struggle, or simply something to endure. But what if we're seeing it all wrong? What if God designed work to be a vital part of how we worship Him and serve others? Dr. Tom Nelson joins us today to talk about that. Dr. Tom Nelson is the President of Made to Flourish and has served as the Senior Pastor of Christ Community Church, a multi-site congregation across Kansas City, for over 30 years. He is also the author of Why Your Work Matters: How God Uses Our Everyday Vocations to Transform Us, Our Neighbors, and the World.False Narratives About WorkCulture tells us many things about work—most of them untrue.“Thank God it's Friday” reflects the belief that work is a curse and that our real lives happen only on weekends.Work as mere productivity reduces our calling to a paycheck or to-do list.Sacred vs. secular divide suggests ministry work matters more than other vocations. However, if we return to Genesis 1 and 2, we find that work is not a curse. Work is God's good design. Whether paid or unpaid, our work is part of how we glorify Him.The Four-Chapter Story of WorkDr. Tom Nelson uses a “four-chapter” framework to show how the Bible shapes a proper view of work:Creation – What Ought to Be. God designed work as a gift and a reflection of His image. Work and worship were never meant to be separate. The Fall – What Is. Sin corrupted work, introducing toil, frustration, and broken relationships.Redemption – What Can Be. Through Christ, our work can be redeemed. Whether changing diapers, leading a company, or volunteering, we bring God's presence into every environment.New Creation – What Will Be. One day, we will experience work in its perfect form—creative, joyful, and without sin—in God's restored Kingdom. One of the most transformative ideas to remember is that all work done for God's glory is sacred. Work is contribution, not just compensation. We carry God's presence with us into our workplaces because the Holy Spirit dwells within us.This perspective breaks down the artificial barrier between “spiritual” and “secular” work. It gives believers a seamless life of worship—Sunday through Monday.Hope for the FutureWe won't spend eternity sitting on clouds. Revelation offers us a glimpse of a garden city where we will worship Jesus and engage in creative, joyful work—free from sin, frustration, and the need for perfect relationships with God and others. If you've believed that your work doesn't matter, be encouraged that you were created with work in mind. God is with you in your work. When you embrace Jesus and become His apprentice, you'll learn to live a seamless life where every task, big or small, can glorify Him.Dr. Tom Nelson's latest book, Why Your Work Matters: How God Uses Our Everyday Vocations to Transform Us, Our Neighbors, and the World, is available wherever books are sold. This Labor Day weekend, James shares a reminder that our work is not separate from our faith — it's central to it. From the beginning, God gave work as a gift. Genesis tells us that man was placed in the garden to work and take care of it and Paul reminds us in Romans 12 that offering our “everyday, ordinary life” — our going-to-work, eating, sleeping, and walking-around life — is true worship before God.   Work is more than productivity; it's creativity, discovery, and an opportunity to partner with God in renewing culture. Whether you're in education, hospitality, health or leading in your industry, your work matters. It is holy to the Lord.   As we celebrate Labor Day, this message invites us to see our workplace as our worship space, and to live with fresh faith that God's Spirit is poured out not only in church services, but in boardrooms and classrooms. Our Monday is as sacred as our Sunday, and God is writing His story through our everyday.

+ A Reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke 4: 16 – 30 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. Episode #388: “Every day in Myanmar, people are living in constant fear, fear of air strike, fear of artillery, fear of arbitrary arrest, fear of extra judicial killing. As long as the military is in power, the country will not be in peace,” says Alex, a Burmese activist-in-exile about Myanmar's brutal reality under military rule. His believes that the military's planned, upcoming elections are in his words “a sham,” just a strategy to consolidate power and a deceptive charade to gain international legitimacy. Because they already hold 25% of the Parliamentary seats under the fraudulent 2008 Constitution, which sets the minimum limit of 33% of the total seats as the threshold for being able to form a government, they just need 8% more. This leads Alex to conclude that the junta will easily be able to manipulate the results to achieve whatever outcome they want. “They are trying to lie to the world, to the country, that's what they have been doing since day one.”The second guest is Wunna, and he describes how on the morning of February 1, 2021, he recalls an eerie silence. The internet was down and phone lines had been cut. Wunna and a friend drove to Naypyidaw to see what was happening – they observed MPs being held under house arrest, guarded by soldiers. “I couldn't even describe how I felt that day. It was really powerless and hopeless on the first day.” This direct experience at Ground Zero propelled him into action. He joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), arranging safe houses and transportation for civil servants. But his bank account was subsequently frozen, and the escalating risk finally forced him to reluctantly make the agonizing decision to leave Myanmar, joining countless exiles.Despite his personal sacrifice, Wunna clings to a powerful conviction. He believes the revolution, built from nothing, still has the opportunity to prevail. To avoid despair, he just focuses on what is within his power to do. He acknowledges international skepticism to the resistance but affirms its strength. He advocates for constructive criticism, but says that it should be accompanied by practical suggestions, and not just empty theorizing. His final message is a call to global solidarity: “I just want to request, be part of our history in defending and nurturing democracy.”

Read OnlineWhen the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away. Luke 4:28–30It's hard to believe that those people who knew Jesus, those from the town in which He had been raised, reacted in such a severe way to our Lord. Jesus had just entered the Synagogue and read from the Prophet Isaiah who stated that “the Spirit of the Lord” was upon him and that he had come to “proclaim liberty to captives.” Jesus' mission was clear. He was the Messiah, sent from the Father, in fulfillment of the teachings of the prophets, and yet Jesus was rejected to the point that the people drove Him out of the town and tried to throw Him off a cliff near the town to kill Him. Again, it's hard to comprehend the extreme emotions that people experienced in regard to Jesus. Some came to love Jesus with the deepest passion, others were outraged at Him and sought His life. One thing that these extreme emotions experienced by many should tell us is that we cannot remain indifferent to Jesus when we truly listen to His words. Indifference comes when Jesus is ignored. But when He is heard and understood, it is clear that His message demands a response. If we do not fully accept Him as we listen to His message, then we will be tempted to reject Him and all that He speaks.Jesus wants to do the same with us. He wants a response from us. First, He wants us to hear Him, to understand the radical nature of His message, and then to make a choice. He wants us to follow Him with passion and zeal, to believe in everything He teaches, and to radically change our lives as a result. And if we will not change, then Jesus' words will challenge us and evoke a response. One example of this that is common today is the strong response that sometimes comes from a teenager or young adult when a loving parent confronts them when they begin to go astray. When confronted in love and with the truth, emotion is often evoked and stirred up. But that is not always bad. The temptation on the part of the parent is to back off and compromise. But that's not what Jesus did with the townspeople. He spoke the truth in love and accepted their response. So it is with those in our lives. At times we must speak the hard but loving truth others need to hear even if we know they will lash out. In the end, challenging them with compassion and truth may ultimately win them over. We do not know what ultimately happened to those townspeople who tried to kill Jesus that day out of anger, but it is entirely possible that the extreme emotion they experienced eventually led them to the truth.Reflect, today, upon the courage and love Jesus had as He directly confronted and challenged His own townspeople for their lack of faith. Try to understand that Jesus' challenge of them was a mercy He offered them to move them from indifference. In your life, are there ways in which you need to be challenged? Are there things you have reacted strongly to and even with a form of rage? Try to see yourself as one of those townspeople who became enraged by our Lord. Be open to any way that you have reacted negatively to that which Jesus has spoken to you. Consider, also, any ways that Jesus may want to use you to speak His clear message of love to another, even if you know it may not immediately be received. Pray for courage, compassion, clarity and love so that you will be able to imitate Jesus as He sought to move those of His own hometown out of the indifference they were experiencing. My challenging Lord, You desire that all Your children turn to You with their whole heart. Your chastisements are acts of mercy meant to move us out of indifference. Please speak to me the truths that I need to hear this day and use me to share Your holy word with others, especially those of my own family. Jesus, I trust in You.Image: James Tissot, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsRead entire reflection at: https://catholic-daily-reflections.com/2025/08/31/an-emotional-reaction-to-jesus-4/

In today's episode for August 31st, guest host Heather leads us through a meaningful journey in Scripture, focusing on Ezekiel chapters 12 to 14 and Revelation chapter 5. Heather invites listeners from around the globe to pause and reflect—not just on the words themselves, but on the way they point us to Jesus, the true source of life. Together, we dig into themes of rebellion, judgment, and hope, witnessing God's faithfulness even in times of despair. As the episode unfolds, Heather unpacks the powerful vision of the Lamb in Revelation, emphasizing that when our first look at the world prompts tears and confusion, we are called to look again—to see the redeeming love of Christ who steps forward on our behalf. Through scripture, thoughtful reflection, and earnest prayer, this episode encourages us to keep seeking, keep worshiping, and keep discovering the deep love of God that restores and renews us each day. Join us as we pray together, hold onto hope, and remember that no matter where we are in our story, we are deeply loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: At first look, you might weep, but you need to look again. And again we look for answers to the judgment that life is sure to bring—the rebellion that is borne out in each human heart, and the destruction that comes from our own selfish ways. When we take that first look, we are going to weep because we don't have an answer. John didn't have an answer either. He weeps because he realizes that within himself he has no answer to judgment. No one has been found worthy. No one has stepped forward on behalf of this broken and rebellious world. John weeps for himself and his nation, but an elder stops him from weeping. He's told by this elder to take a second look. In this second look, he is going to see an answer. And the answer is not what you would think. The answer is the Lamb. He says, stop weeping. Look. This Lamb steps forward to take the scroll that represents the fury of judgment that this broken and rebellious world has brought on themselves. He's not led or pushed forward. He steps forward because of the love he has for his broken world and for broken people like me and you. This Lamb steps forward to take the scroll representing the judgment due this world. The Lamb is the only one who has the answer for the judgment I deserve in this life. That scroll was nailed with him on the cross. As it were, on the cross he opened the scroll and answered the charges written on it. He absorbed the fury of our judgments. He answered it all with self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. That's what we are asked to look at again. Then John is told to look a third time. This third look shows him all that the Lamb has accomplished by stepping forward. He sees a vision of people from every tribe and tongue and language, countless millions around the throne, worshiping and adoring the Lamb. Keep looking. When you don't see an answer in the midst of your tears, keep looking. If you look, you will see a Lamb. He alone has the answer you're looking for. He is the answer to your despair and shame, your broken heart and your regrets. He is the answer for it all. He has stepped forward for you out of love, to do what he alone can do. We need to look again—a third time. Then we will see that the Lamb has stepped forward for countless millions of others, other broken and rebellious people like us. He is making them new, restoring their hearts, drying their tears and giving them a new song. Worthy is the Lamb. May God enable us to sing this new song today. And may he cause us to look, and look, and look again. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family and for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

Jesus never seemed in a hurry, even when crowds demanded His attention. Drawing from the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), we'll unpack how formation happens in our margins—not our schedules. Living a Spirit-led life means being interruptible. One of our kingdom qualities is being an unhurried friend, and this passage challenges us to consider who our friend is, the same way that Jesus challenged first-century people with their definition of neighbor. The goal of Christianity is Christlikeness. Spiritual growth is the fruit of our faith; evidence that we are connected to the vine. In this episode of Kitchen Table Theology, Pastor Jeff and Tiffany unpack what spiritual growth really is, why it matters, and how believers partner with the Holy Spirit to become more like Christ. They explain the nature of growth, the role of discipline and refinement, and the daily practices that help Christians mature in their faith. What We Discussed01:17 – Growth and Maturity in ScripturePractical Theology connects doctrine to daily life. Examples from Corinth and Hebrews show how believers can remain spiritually immature. The Christian life involves either progressing or regressing—there is no standing still.03:42 – Defining Spiritual GrowthSpiritual growth is a progressive development in key areas of life: spiritual character, knowledge of God, faith, and an appreciation of Christ's work.05:00 – The Nature of Spiritual GrowthGrowth is a partnership between the Holy Spirit and believers. The Spirit empowers us to live out God's truth, producing behavioral growth expressed in love, patience, and obedience.07:05 – Lifelong Learning and RefinementSpiritual growth is not linear. God refines believers through discipline and correction. 09:40 – The Goal of GrowthThe ultimate outcome is to become more like Christ. The fruits of the Spirit shape believers into His likeness.12:00 – Practicing Spiritual Growth DailySpiritual disciplines mirror physical habits. Believers need daily nourishment from God's Word, obedience to His commands, and rest in His promises. 14:33 – A Call to Ongoing GrowthSpiritual growth has infinite capacity. Christians should never be satisfied with their current condition but continually press forward in maturity.Key Quote“Although we'll never attain absolute spiritual maturity in this world, we can be relatively mature for our spiritual age as we give ourselves daily to the means God uses to grow us.” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! In this message, Pastor Chris unpacks Romans 5:1-11 to show how justification by faith transforms not only our eternity but our present life. Because of Jesus, we have peace with God, access to his grace, and joy that endures even through suffering. Paul reminds us that hardship produces endurance, character, and hope. And this hope will not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Spirit. At the center of it all is the staggering truth that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. If God loved us then, how much more does he love us now as his children? We live in a fallen evil world. Because of sin, the natural drift of the current of this world is downward. If we're honest, the darkness and evil isn't just out there; we feel it in us from time to time too.  The natural response is to resort to our own resources and efforts to make it — work harder, go to more therapy, be nicer, change schools or find new friends. All of these things may be appropriate, but without the wind of the Spirit it just leads to futility and exhaustion.  We need to be filled with the Sprit.  We need to be intoxicated Christians.

Her story is one of mystery, scandal, and restless energy that continues to fascinate and frighten both locals and paranormal investigators alike.   The tale begins in Logan, West Virginia, during the 1930s, when Mamie Thurman, a young and beautiful housewife, became the subject of whispers and rumors around town. Known for her charm and charisma, Mamie was said to have caught the attention of influential men in the community. Despite her outward appearance as a devoted wife, she was rumored to be leading a double life—entangled in secret relationships that would ultimately lead to her untimely death.   On June 21, 1932, Mamie's life came to a violent end. Her body was discovered on a desolate mountain road in Logan County, brutally murdered. Her throat had been slashed, and she bore multiple stab wounds. The crime scene shocked the small coal town, and speculation ran wild about who could have committed such a gruesome act. Suspicion quickly turned toward a local handyman, but many believed that powerful men in the community may have been involved, and the case was never fully resolved.   This violent death seemed to leave a permanent imprint on the area. Over the decades, countless reports of paranormal activity have surfaced, centered on the very road where Mamie's body was found—now known as “22 Mountain.” Locals and travelers alike have described seeing a spectral woman in a blue dress, believed to be Mamie's restless spirit, wandering the mountain at night. Her apparition is said to suddenly appear in front of cars, causing drivers to slam on their brakes in fear, only to have her vanish into the darkness.   Jennifer and Joe dive deep into this case, peeling back the layers of history, rumor, and ghostly lore. They discuss how Mamie's story intertwines with themes of injustice, betrayal, and cover-up, and how her tragic fate resonates with so many who feel she was denied justice in life. The episode also highlights personal accounts from those who claim to have seen her ghost and considers why some spirits remain earthbound, replaying their pain or searching for closure.   Was Mamie Thurman simply a victim of circumstance and small-town gossip, or was her murder part of a larger conspiracy meant to silence her? And is her ghost a reminder of unfinished business, or a symbol of the trauma that lingers long after a violent death?   Join Jennifer and Joe as they unpack the haunting legacy of Mamie Thurman, bringing both historical context and paranormal insight to this unforgettable case. Whether you're drawn to true crime, ghost stories, or the mysteries of Appalachian folklore, this episode will leave you captivated by the spirit of Mamie Thurman and the shadows she still casts on Logan County to this day.

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.[a] 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,     and your young men shall see visions,     and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants     in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above     and signs on the earth below,     blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness     and the moon to blood,     before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.' 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus,[b] delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.25 For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me,     for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;     my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,     or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life;     you will make me full of gladness with your presence.' 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30  Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35     until I make your enemies your footstool.”' 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

So many believers live stuck in a cycle of self-effort, shame, and uncertainty, trying hard to be “good Christians” while quietly asking, Am I doing this right? But willpower was never the path to transformation. That's the good news of Romans 8. We've been set free, not to strive harder, but to walk in step with the Spirit. There's no condemnation for those in Christ, because the Spirit leads us into life, peace, and purpose. Living by the flesh leads to exhaustion, confusion, and defeat. But living by the Spirit is rooted in God, fueled by faith, and aimed at His glory. You are not who you used to be. You've been made new, filled with the Spirit, and called to walk in that identity. The question isn't Are you doing this right? It's Are you letting Him lead?

Through a study of the book of Acts, we're asking the Spirit to conform us to the patterns and practices of the early church — a people who love the lost like Jesus, give of themselves in rhythms of blessing and hospitality, and who seek to engage in curious, spiritual, and gospel conversations. We want the Spirit to do an Acts 3-4 kind of work this week, fulfilling Jesus' promise in Acts 1.8: You will receive power, and you will be my witnesses. This week, the Spirit, through Paul, finishes what was started by taking the gospel to the ends of the known world. The anticlimactic ending to Acts encourages us to participate with the Spirit in His missionary endeavors.

Acts 20:17-38 English Standard VersionPaul Speaks to the Ephesian Elders17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 18 And when they came to him, he said to them:“You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house,21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, 38 being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship.English Standard Version (ESV)The ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. This week, Eric continued our journey through 2 Corinthians 3 and tackled a universal struggle: the pressure to be perfect. Whether it's parenting, relationships, or leadership, we often think peace will come when we finally get it right. But Scripture says real peace—and real transformation—comes not from effort, but from turning to Jesus. When we remove the veil and contemplate His glory, the Spirit brings freedom: freedom from shame, pressure, and self-righteousness. And the Spirit doesn't just free us—He transforms us. If you've ever wondered how real change happens, this message will give you new hope.

Ordinarily there are certain previous and preparatory works, or workings in and upon the souls of men, that are antecedent and dispositive unto it. But yet regeneration doth not consist in them, nor can it be educed out of them. A material disposition is that which disposeth and some way maketh a subject fit for the reception of that which shall be communicated, added, or infused into it as its form. So wood by dryness and a due composure is made fit and ready to admit of firing, or continual fire.

New Testament churches are to be led by a team of biblically-qualified spiritual shepherds. The Bible calls these shepherds pastors, overseers, and elders at various points. (See, for example, Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4; Acts 20:28.) At Life Church we seek to order ourselves according to this biblical pattern, and thus we are led by a group of shepherds - a team that includes staff pastors as well as our lay elders. These elders have been found to demonstrate the biblical qualifications outlined for elders in passages such as 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.As we ordained three new elders in our gathering this Sunday, we remembered the high cost Christ Jesus paid to obtain this Bride by His blood from Acts 20:17-38.And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5Life Church exists to glorify God by making disciples who treasure Christ, grow together, and live on mission.
