When we were kids, we totally missed a bunch of hidden secrets in our favorite cartoons. Creators often sneaked in clever jokes, pop culture references, and sometimes even adult humor that flew right over our heads. Shows like "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Animaniacs" are packed with these hidden gems. Looking back now, it's fun to spot these Easter eggs and realize how much the animators were winking at the adults watching with us. It adds a whole new layer of appreciation for those classic shows we loved! #brightside Preview photo credit: SpongeBob SquarePants / Nickelodeon Animation Studios and co-producers Animation is created by Bright Side. Today we're talking with Michael Andrews, ACE, editor of the incredible animated feature, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Anyone who has seen this has to just be in awe of how something like this got made - and Mike's gonna shed some light on that for us. Mike's credits include editing Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Megamind, Shrek, Shrek 2, and Shrek the Third. When you figure that each of those was probably a multi-year commitment, that is a lot of animation editing experience. There are some truly amazing behind the scenes facts in this interview.

In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia conclude Keanu Reeves Month with the 2020 Nickelodeon animated film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the third movie based on the 1999 animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. In order to get SpongeBob away from The Krusty Krab to steal the secret formula easier, Plankton kidnaps SpongeBob's snail Gary to give to King Poseidon. SpongeBob and Patrick embark on a journey to find Gary at Atlantic City where King Poseidon resides to rescue him before it's too late. Keanu Reeves plays as a tumbleweed named Sage who gives them advice on how to overcome their obstacles to rescue Gary. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie aired around August 2020 in theaters in Canada and then on March 2021 in the United States on Paramount+. Critics were mixed with the film saying that the story and humor was weak compared to the two previous films, but the new 3D animation and charm made up for it. Others felt it was an insult since it was produced after Stephen Hillenberg's, the creator of SpongeBob Squarepants, death and a promotional piece for the spinoff series Camp Coral that aired a few months later. What did Patricia and Arun think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

As an executive at Disney in the 90s, Bob Bacon witnessed the rise of CG, supporting the production of increasingly big-budget blockbusters, including Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and Lilo and Stitch. He then joined Elton John for Gnomeo and Juliet and moved to Paramount for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water. Now, Bob is Head of Studio at Virtue Animation, a Web3-based company inspired by his time working for the late Kobe Bryant. Bob details how the traditional animation studio system works, how fragile it can be, and how he's continually innovated new workflows that can deliver both creativity and cashflows. He finishes with insight into how NFTs and crypto are revolutionizing and democratizing the entertainment industry.

In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia conclude Nicktoons Movie Month with a vs. match between the 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie vs. the 2015 sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick travel to Shell City to retrieve King Neptune's crown in 7 days before he executes Mr. Krabs whom he believed stole and sold the crown. In reality, it was Plankton who stole it as a part of Plan Z to take over Bikini Bottom. In Sponge Out of Water, SpongeBob and Plankton have to work together to retrieve the Krabby Patty formula after it was stolen by a pirate named Burger Beard. He was able to succeed in his plans thanks to a magical book that can make anything happen when you write on it. SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy journey into the surface and fight Burger Beard to get the formula back. When The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie premiered in theaters, it received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a "charming romp", but an overextended episode of the show. However, it has become a childhood favorite for fans of the show still regarded as the best film in the trilogy. It currently has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. When Sponge Out of Water premiered in theaters, it was praised for Antonio Banderas' performance, its wacky, fun adventure, and zany humor. However some fans state that it wasn't as good as the original. When Arun and Patricia recorded the episode, it was rated 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, it has changed to 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and no longer in Crystal Skull territory. Which film did Arun and Patricia enjoy the most? The original or the sequel? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Everybody loves Spongebob (well almost everybody), which is why there is so much Spongebob media out there. Video games, shirts, toys, and now, three movies. Sponge on the Run is the third Spongebob movie, and the first to be animated entirely in CG. We all have our own opinions about that little change, but what really matters is the story. Well..... it's lifted from a special that released 15 years ago. Scratch that, what really matters is how fun it is! It's Spongebob, it has to be fun, right? Right? We'll see. Is The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run absorbent and yellow and porous, or is it just annoying? Find out on this episode of............ THE MOVIE HOPPERS!!!!! Hey kids! It has been a crazy year and for a long portion of it, there weren't any theatrical movies to review. But we still had movies and some of them were really good. This is why that even if it is a few months late, we've decided to do our annual look at the best movies at the mid-year point (plus two months). It is The Breakdown of the Best of 2020 So Far, and for long-time listeners, you know this is a show where we bestow some awards on our favourite moments, performances, surprises and movies. As well, we both list our top five movies of the year. It has been an odd year and maybe we don't have the same bounty of great movies to select but this episode will prove there are still some real gems worth tracking down.As always, we had a great time recording the episode, and like all our Best of shows, this one is super-sized. We really hope you love it as well, and if you do, please help us out by spreading the word on social media so other movie fans can track us down.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site), or subscribe on sites like Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, CastBox and iTunes. The Movie Breakdown Awards for 2020 So Far:The Best Scene: The Lovebirds - a comical handling of vehicular homicide (CS)The Trip to Greece - Steve Coogan impersonated Ray Winstone impersonating King Henry VIII (SM)Best Supporting/Cameo: Keanu Reeves - The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (CS)Dan Stevens - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (SM)Best Performance:Ben Affleck - The Way Back/Elizabeth Moss - The Invisible Man (CS)Riley Keough - The Lodge (SM)The Most Delightful Surprise:Sonic the Hedgehog (CS)My Spy (SM)Best Underrated/Under-seen Movie:The Rhythm Section (CS)Sputnik (SM)Worst Movie:The Last Days of American Crime (CS & SM)Top Five Movies of 2020 So Far:Christopher:5. The movie theatres are opening up again in Ontario, so that means that for the first time since March that we are reviewing some theatrical releases. This includes an animated adventure that isn't coming to the United States until next year but is the big new release in Canada in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. The other theatrical release is the Russel Crowe starring thriller, Unhinged. We also review two 2020 movies that are streaming on Netflix including the Jamie Foxx starring twist on the superhero genre mixed with police procedural in Project Power and a different take on the romantic teen comedy with Banana Split. Plus, we look at talented female directors like Olivia Wilde and Nia DaCosta being hired to helm big tentpoles and discuss if this is true change in Hollywood or just a fad.As always, it was a great time recording the episode and we are so thankful for your weekly support. I didn't say this within the episode, but the title of the movie sucks. The first film was called The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, and The SpongeBob Movie became the umbrella title for the next two films. Plus, it was so hard for me distinguish between Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run. Anyway, this movie came out toward the end of May. With me on this episode is my friend Cris, bassist of the band Heirgloom! (Guess you could call them band geeks. Heh.) Listen to us talk about what we liked and disliked about Sponge on the Run.
