The Shawshank Redemption, just starring Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford in the lead roles? It might just have happened, if writer/director Frank Darabont hadn't turned down a life-changing offer to let someone else direct the film. Instead, he dug in, and put together - across a testing production - a film that's gone on to be very highly regarded. Even after it flopped at the box office. The late Robert Redford meanwhile was 77 years old when he came to make the film All Is Lost. It involved him stuck in the water for hours on end, left him with hearing loss, and in the midst of a film that benefitted heavily from an abandoned Disney blockbuster. Stories of both films are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, the boys head back to 1997 to figure out what the hell is going through David Fincher's head while torturing Michael Douglas in “The Game”. His follow-up to “Alien3” and “Se7en”, as well as lots of peak-MTV music videos, Nolan kept his mystery streak going, and we're still wondering, what did he want from us? First, after John tells everyone to go see “TWINLESS”, we had some beef to settle featuring 11 callers! So grab a drink, enjoy the ride, and listen to a bunch of callers give us crap, courtesy of our friends at The Matt & Mark Movie Show. linktr.ee/theloveofcinema - Check out our YouTube page! On this episode of our '90s movie rehash podcast: Squirrel-talk; We've lost the ability to be ironically deep; Ethan Hawke should play a content person (would be hilarious); Tom Cruise should go back to playing humans.
Uber will soon be delivering food with drones across the United States. South Park didn't get their episode done in time, which was probably a good thing considering they use a lot of current news in their episodes. Tom Cruise is set to return as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2. What if movie reboots were more realistic?? Colossal Biosciences is making headlines again! They brought back the dire wolf. Ranjay Gulati believes courage isn't about being fearless — it's about taking action when fear shows up. As the Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor at Harvard Business School and author of Deep Purpose and How to Be Bold, he studies how leaders and organizations confront uncertainty and turn it into fuel for growth. In this conversation with Ryan, Ranjay shares his fear equation, explores why risk-averse cultures fall into the “success trap,” and explains why purpose-driven conviction unlocks bold action. Along the way, he shares the family stories that shaped his lens and why feels Tom Cruise's “I don't mind being scared” mantra is a teachable skill, not something that he was born with.

Before "Ted Lasso," before viral Super Bowl speeches, and long before anyone tried to give athletes emotional depth in a rom-com, there was Jerry Maguire. The year was 1996. The Cold War was over, the NFL was king, and Tom Cruise was still a god among men, only this time, he wasn't flying jets, breaking into vaults, or sliding around in his jocks. He was having an existential crisis... over sports marketing. Join the team for this Jerry Maguire (1996) Review. This week on Born to Watch, the team gets personal with Cameron Crowe's career-defining genre-bender. It's a sports film. It's a romantic drama. It's a corporate takedown. It's an Oscar-worthy performance from Cuba Gooding Jr., a breakout role for Renée Zellweger, and the movie that made grown men cry, "You complete me."Whitey sets the tone, reminding us that Tom Cruise's 90s run, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Mission: Impossible, Magnolia, is better than most actors' entire careers. He dives headfirst into Jerry's meltdown, that now-iconic mission statement, and the truth that integrity doesn't pay… until it suddenly does. Gow takes us into the heart of the Rod Tidwell storyline and how one man's love for his family and the almighty bonus created one of cinema's most quotable characters. Will? He gets emotional. There are tears. Multiple. The pod goes all in on the movie's cry meter, with Whitey clocking in at a solid three sobs, and Gow recommending we scrap the popcorn scale for tears-per-scene metrics. We break down why this movie hits so hard: the kid with glasses saying "You said fuck," the kitchen kiss, the living room apology, and yes, the car radio singalong that still gives everyone anxiety. The team also has questions: What was Jerry doing on that porch? Is Bob Sugar the most punchable man in cinematic history? Could Tom Hanks have pulled this off, or did Cruise's signature manic energy make this role iconic? And what's with Dickie Fox and his "wake up happy" nonsense? Do we buy it, or want to slap him?As always, we hit The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The good? The chemistry between Cruise and Cuba. The soundtrack that absolutely slaps. Bonnie Hunt is an underrated MVP. The bad? The wedding scene. Jerry's inability to fake happiness. That mission statement is being printed at Kinko's. The ugly? A porch makeout scene that doesn't belong in a PG-13 film, especially with a child and a sister literally ten feet away. The cast breakdown gets the complete treatment: Zellweger's rise from indie darling to Oscar winner, Cuba's perfect moment before a long string of missed roles, and a deep, reluctant appreciation for Jay Mohr's ultra-hatable Bob Sugar. Also: Jonathan Lipnicki, secret weapon. Human heads weigh 8 pounds. Who knew?Legacy-wise, Jerry Maguire doesn't just survive; it thrives. It's more relevant in 2025 than ever: in a world that prizes hustle and brand, it reminds us what it means to care. It's messy. It's heartfelt. And it's full of awkward truths that still sting.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs this Tom Cruise's most human role?Did the mission statement actually change anything, or make him broke?Who deserves the bonus: Jerry or Rod?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and show us the listener love.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. War of the Worlds (2005) is on trial this week. Did Spielberg catch lightning in a bottle or would it be better left buried? Alex says this is a modern yet faithful adaptation of the seminal novel by H.G. Wells that deftly weaves horror into the blockbuster experience. Dave feels a saccharine ending as well as odd plot changes mean the impact of the original novel is diluted and the film itself is forgettable. All this with a quiz about other takes on this much-adapted work and an impression of Richard Burton. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/274

Ed opperman interview Mark Shaw about the murder of Dorothy KilgallenWas What's My Line TV Star, media icon, and crack investigative reporter and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen murdered for writing a tell-all book about the JFK assassination? If so, is the main suspect in her death still at large? These questions and more are answered in former CNN, ESPN, and USA Today legal analyst Mark Shaw's 25th book, The Reporter Who Knew Too Much. Through discovery of never-before-seen videotaped eyewitness interviews with those closest to Kilgallen and secret government documents, Shaw unfolds a “whodunit” murder mystery featuring suspects including Frank Sinatra, J. Edgar Hoover, Mafia Don Carlos Marcello and a "Mystery Man" who may have silenced Kilgallen. All while by presenting through Kilgallen's eyes the most compelling evidence about the JFK assassinations since the House Select Committee on Assassination's investigation in the 1970s.Called by the New York Post, “the most powerful female voice in America,” and by acclaimed author Mark Lane the “the only serious journalist in America who was concerned with who killed John Kennedy and getting all of the facts about the assassination,” Kilgallen's official cause of death reported as an overdose of barbiturates combined with alcohol, has always been suspect since no investigation occurred despite the death scene having been staged. Shaw proves Kilgallen, a remarkable woman who broke the "glass ceiling" before the term became fashionable, was denied the justice she deserved, that is until now. More about the book may be learned at thereporterwhoknewtoomuch.com or thedorothykilgallenstory.org.Part Two Ed Opperman interviews Daniel Hopsicker, Author of Barry and The Boys, about Barry Seal the CIA cocaine smuggler durring Iran Contra and the subject of the Tom Cruise movie American MadeNOTE: Chapter 35 is intentionally missing from the printing of this publication. Packed with over-the-top humor, outrageous disguises, the hilarious "Hard Knock Life" rap with Dr. Evil and Mini-Me, and plenty of pop-culture references, Goldmember cemented itself as one of the most quotable and absurd entries in the Austin Powers series. Whether it's Austin's awkward reunion with his father Nigel Powers (Michael Caine, The Dark Knight, The Cider House Rules), Beyoncé's stylish spy antics, or Goldmember's bizarre obsession with gold, the movie remains a nostalgic comedy trip and a defining parody of early 2000s pop culture. Dan, Manny, & Billy put the 1996 comedy classic Happy Gilmore and the 2025 legacy sequel Happy Gilmore 2 to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “[Happy Gilmore] is a top 10 comedy for me, easily.” -Billy This is an epic episode. 2 hours of Nostalgia Test Podcast love, comedy, and the hottest hot takes of all time. This is the most honest review of Happy Gilmore 2 out there, guaranteed. Dan, Manny, and Billy go over their favorite scenes, quotes, and characters from the first movie, how Carl Weathers and Christopher McDonald give are the standout performances, and what's up with Julie Bowen's hair? They Also talk about the unforgettable Bob Barker Adam Sandler fight scene and how Bob Barker did all his own fighting. And then the tide turns swiftly. The gang tears Happy Gilmore 2 to pieces. Billy goes deep on how Happy Gilmore is a horrible representation for all fathers, how there's no way anyone would ever let their families down so bad, and that in real life you just have to “Get it done!” There's a discussion on toxic masculinity, the racist representation of Chubb's son, the waste of money on all these cameos, and how Hollywood needs to go much deeper than pure nostalgia. Dan does give bad Bunny his flowers for the best performance in the entire movie and possibly the only laughs, and Billy praises John Daly as well. Lastly, Manny reads some 1-star and 10-star reviews of Happy Gilmore 2 and they try to figure out how this movie has a higher Rotten Tomato rating than the Tom Cruise 80s masterpiece Cocktail. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take off with "American Made" (2017), starring Tom Cruise as Barry Seal, a pilot who gets tangled up in smuggling, the CIA, and more money than he can carry. Both Butler and Field agree the movie is a fun ride, but it's one that relies almost entirely on Cruise's charm to keep it in the air. The film never really establishes a sense of risk or conflict, even as Barry's world spins out of control. Instead of leaning into the tension of its story—especially in the third act—it plays things too lightly, making dangerous situations feel more like a joyride. What's your favorite non-action Tom Cruise film? A crazy weekend at the top of the Premier League table. VAR turned its ugly head on the West London Derby, City lost their second in a row, and a masterful strike separated Liverpool and Arsenal. Everton and Jack are cruising while Man U needed a late penalty to win against Burnley. Spurs lose, the Irons score 3 in 10 minutes, Newcastle's drama appears to be over, and Marco Bizot! Finally, Producer Mel has a lot of “fresh air” and reads a list of names, that's right, it's the famous smoked out transfer recap! The crew enjoys the Colonel EH Taylor small batch Bourbon. This week, we head back to a time of monochrome and unreliable box office receipts to discuss 1935's “The 39 Steps”. Alfred Hitchcock was 10 years and 22 films deep by this point in his directing career, and really caught his groove, to the point where this film is ranked the #4 British film by the BFI. On August 19, 2012, Tony Scott — the British filmmaker best known for high-octane blockbusters like Top Gun, Crimson Tide, and Man on Fire — died by suicide at the age of 68 in Los Angeles. In a career that stretched across three decades, Scott carved out a unique place in Hollywood as a master of adrenaline-fueled spectacle. With his signature visual style — kinetic camerawork, bold color palettes, and an editing pace that matched the heartbeat of his action sequences — he helped redefine what a mainstream action movie could feel like. From working with stars like Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington to pushing the technical limits of action cinema, Scott's influence continues to ripple through blockbuster filmmaking today.
