Top Gun is on trial this week. Is it a movie Maverick? Or is it a cooked Goose? Dave defends the classic, arguing that it was one of the biggest films of the 80s, with great action sequences and a stellar soundtrack. Gav is in prosecution and counters that the action is short and not very sweet, and that most of the film is focused on a poorly-written love story. There's an impression of Tom Skerritt and a quiz all about movie nicknames. All that plus the usual great debates and banter from the gang. We feel the need. The need to plead... our case! www.filmsontrial.co.uk/275

Is EQ more important than IQ when it comes to hospitality?Today, Manish Puri, General Manager of the Regent Hotels and Resorts Bali, joins Dan to dive into key topics in the industry, such as sustainability, community, and leadership. They discuss the essence of hospitality, differentiating it from mere service, and delve into the concept of regenerative hospitality and sustainability. Manish shares insights from his career at prestigious hotel brands like Oberoi, Burj Al Arab, Six Senses, and Regent Bali. They explore how sustainability initiatives can transform the industry, turning cost centers into investment centers, and the importance of heartfelt service. The conversation also covers the challenges of opening and managing new hotels and the impact of leadership and open-heartedness in inspiring younger generations in the hospitality industry.Takeaways: Embrace regenerative practices by viewing waste as an opportunity to create value, turning sustainability efforts into investments rather than costs.Lead by example and integrity. Your actions are always being observed, so inspire others by consistently doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.Pay attention to the small details in your work. Excellence is built on thousands of thoughtful, consistent actions rather than a single grand gesture.Foster a culture of genuine care and positivity. Small acts of kindness and authentic smiles can create a powerful ripple effect throughout your organization.Design guest programs that encourage visitors to give back to the local community, such as volunteering or sharing their expertise, creating a positive impact beyond their stay.Treat sustainability initiatives as opportunities for investment and growth, not just as expenses. Find ways to turn environmental responsibility into tangible value.Quote of the Show:“ A luxury brand has to have that caring side of it. Caring for the environment, caring for all stakeholders, caring for the community. Without it, you are not a complete hotel.” - Manish PuriLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/manish-puri-36241231/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/manpuri/ Website: https://www.ihg.com/regent/hotels/us/en/reservation Shout Outs:1:15 - Oberoi Hotels and Resorts https://www.oberoihotels.com/ 1:16 - Burj Al Arab https://www.jumeirah.com/en/Stay/Dubai/Burj-Al-Arab-Jumeirah 1:17 - Potato Head https://seminyak.potatohead.co/ 1:22 - Six Senses https://www.sixsenses.com/en/ 2:28 - IHG https://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/reservation 2:30 - Kimpton https://www.ihg.com/kimptonhotels/hotels/us/en/reservation 2:33 - Intercontinental https://www.ihg.com/intercontinental/hotels/us/en/reservation 5:10 - Beverly Wilshire https://www.fourseasons.com/beverlywilshire/ 5:12 - Pretty Woman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Woman 5:48 - Four Seasons https://www.fourseasons.com/ 5:49 - Jim Brown https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-brown-718240a/ 22:42 - TripAdvisor https://www.tripadvisor.com/ 28:45 - Tom Cruise https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Cruise 28:52 - Grand Hyatt https://www.hyatt.com/grand-hyatt/en-US 28: 53 - Kempinski Palace https://www.kempinski.com/en/palace-portoroz 29:02 - University of Oxford https://www.ox.ac.uk/ 29:02 - Cornell University https://www.cornell.edu/

Send us a textThe curtain is pulled back on Scientology's enigmatic leader as Marc and Claire Headley share firsthand accounts of David Miscavige from their combined 30+ years inside the organization's headquarters. Their candid stories reveal a man obsessed with control, prone to humiliating outbursts, and increasingly paranoid about those around him. From bizarre personal encounters (like Miscavige mocking Marc about a Depeche Mode singer's suicide attempt) to shocking revelations about his daily routine, the Headleys paint a vivid picture of what happens when absolute power corrupts absolutely. Miscavige emerges as a micromanager who demands compliance reports for even the smallest tasks—like placing rubber mats under urinals—while simultaneously keeping his inner circle small and suspicious of everyone else. The conversation takes particularly illuminating turns when discussing Miscavige's unusual relationship with Tom Cruise. According to widespread reports, Scientology's leader accompanied Cruise and Katie Holmes on their honeymoon, raising eyebrows about the nature of celebrity treatment within the organization. The Headleys also detail how Miscavige lost $30 million of L. Ron Hubbard's money in bad investments, including fake oil wells and bogus treasure hunting schemes, yet managed to blame others for these financial disasters.Perhaps most disturbing are the accounts of physical and emotional abuse. Claire recounts being forced to drag Miscavige across a room while he held onto her clothing, telling her and other executives they were his "ball and chain." These personal stories provide crucial context for understanding how Scientology operates under his leadership and why former members continue speaking out despite the organization's reputation for aggressive retaliation against critics.Send us your Fake Navy Davey doll photos to enter our monthly contest and help support the Aftermath Foundation's work helping people escape Scientology!Support the showBFG Store - http://blownforgood-shop.fourthwall.com/Blown For Good on Audible - https://www.amazon.com/Blown-for-Good-Marc-Headley-audiobook/dp/B07GC6ZKGQ/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Blown For Good Website: http://blownforgood.com/PODCAST INFO:Podcast website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2131160 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blown-for-good-behind-the-iron-curtain-of-scientology/id1671284503 RSS: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2131160.rss YOUTUBE PLAYLISTS: Spy Files Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWtJfniWLwq4cA-e...
Prepare yourself for an EPIC non-Mormon story! This week we are introducing Claire and Marc Headley, who were born into the Church of Scientology and have a remarkable escape story that we are excited to share with you. Both Claire and Marc were members of the Sea Organization within Scientology, where the church's elite-level leaders work and are required to sign a billion-year contract of servitude. During their time there, both worked closely with David Miscavige, the current leader of Scientology, and witnessed his brutality firsthand. In this first part, Claire and Marc discuss the foundations of Scientology, what it was like to be raised in it, and how they came to join the Sea Org. They also share insider information on high-profile members such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and even address the mystery of what happened to Shelly Miscavige. Then, join us on Wednesday for part two of this interview, where they share their incredible story of escaping the Sea Org and talk about their work with the Mike Rinder Aftermath Foundation. So strap in and enjoy this stranger-than-fiction story!___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. The Shawshank Redemption, just starring Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford in the lead roles? It might just have happened, if writer/director Frank Darabont hadn't turned down a life-changing offer to let someone else direct the film. Instead, he dug in, and put together - across a testing production - a film that's gone on to be very highly regarded. Even after it flopped at the box office. The late Robert Redford meanwhile was 77 years old when he came to make the film All Is Lost. It involved him stuck in the water for hours on end, left him with hearing loss, and in the midst of a film that benefitted heavily from an abandoned Disney blockbuster. 1221. Ranjay Gulati believes courage isn't about being fearless — it's about taking action when fear shows up. As the Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor at Harvard Business School and author of Deep Purpose and How to Be Bold, he studies how leaders and organizations confront uncertainty and turn it into fuel for growth. In this conversation with Ryan, Ranjay shares his fear equation, explores why risk-averse cultures fall into the “success trap,” and explains why purpose-driven conviction unlocks bold action. Along the way, he shares the family stories that shaped his lens and why feels Tom Cruise's “I don't mind being scared” mantra is a teachable skill, not something that he was born with.

Before "Ted Lasso," before viral Super Bowl speeches, and long before anyone tried to give athletes emotional depth in a rom-com, there was Jerry Maguire. The year was 1996. The Cold War was over, the NFL was king, and Tom Cruise was still a god among men, only this time, he wasn't flying jets, breaking into vaults, or sliding around in his jocks. He was having an existential crisis... over sports marketing. Join the team for this Jerry Maguire (1996) Review. This week on Born to Watch, the team gets personal with Cameron Crowe's career-defining genre-bender. It's a sports film. It's a romantic drama. It's a corporate takedown. It's an Oscar-worthy performance from Cuba Gooding Jr., a breakout role for Renée Zellweger, and the movie that made grown men cry, "You complete me."Whitey sets the tone, reminding us that Tom Cruise's 90s run, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Mission: Impossible, Magnolia, is better than most actors' entire careers. He dives headfirst into Jerry's meltdown, that now-iconic mission statement, and the truth that integrity doesn't pay… until it suddenly does. Gow takes us into the heart of the Rod Tidwell storyline and how one man's love for his family and the almighty bonus created one of cinema's most quotable characters. Will? He gets emotional. There are tears. Multiple. The pod goes all in on the movie's cry meter, with Whitey clocking in at a solid three sobs, and Gow recommending we scrap the popcorn scale for tears-per-scene metrics. We break down why this movie hits so hard: the kid with glasses saying "You said fuck," the kitchen kiss, the living room apology, and yes, the car radio singalong that still gives everyone anxiety. The team also has questions: What was Jerry doing on that porch? Is Bob Sugar the most punchable man in cinematic history? Could Tom Hanks have pulled this off, or did Cruise's signature manic energy make this role iconic? And what's with Dickie Fox and his "wake up happy" nonsense? Do we buy it, or want to slap him?As always, we hit The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The good? The chemistry between Cruise and Cuba. The soundtrack that absolutely slaps. Bonnie Hunt is an underrated MVP. The bad? The wedding scene. Jerry's inability to fake happiness. That mission statement is being printed at Kinko's. The ugly? A porch makeout scene that doesn't belong in a PG-13 film, especially with a child and a sister literally ten feet away. The cast breakdown gets the complete treatment: Zellweger's rise from indie darling to Oscar winner, Cuba's perfect moment before a long string of missed roles, and a deep, reluctant appreciation for Jay Mohr's ultra-hatable Bob Sugar. Also: Jonathan Lipnicki, secret weapon. Human heads weigh 8 pounds. Who knew?Legacy-wise, Jerry Maguire doesn't just survive; it thrives. It's more relevant in 2025 than ever: in a world that prizes hustle and brand, it reminds us what it means to care. It's messy. It's heartfelt. And it's full of awkward truths that still sting.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs this Tom Cruise's most human role?Did the mission statement actually change anything, or make him broke?Who deserves the bonus: Jerry or Rod?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and show us the listener love.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. Ozempic, skydiving, and toilets—what a wild ride! Never in my life seen something so crazy, but here we are. Oh yes, I'm breaking it all down—my weight loss journey, life with Ozempic, and the hilarious (and sometimes awkward) moments along the way. From pushing past cravings to dealing with the porcelain throne struggle, I'm sharing it all. This to me has gone too far—motivated by dreams of skydiving, fitting on my motorcycle, and proving haters wrong. You know I had to keep it real—balancing gym sessions, puppy walks, and resisting hot-and-readies during football season. Life's about leveling up and doing it for YOU. And let's not forget the unexpected side effects that come with this journey. Y'all ever had to rock back and forth on the toilet? Trust me, you'll laugh (or cry) with me on this one.Check out my story, my struggles, and why I'm on a mission to take control, make moves, and maybe even hang out of a plane like Tom Cruise. Drop a comment, share your thoughts—let's talk about it! It's your boy, Billy Williams, keeping it real as always. Let's do this.

War of the Worlds (2005) is on trial this week. Did Spielberg catch lightning in a bottle or would it be better left buried? Alex says this is a modern yet faithful adaptation of the seminal novel by H.G. Wells that deftly weaves horror into the blockbuster experience. Dave feels a saccharine ending as well as odd plot changes mean the impact of the original novel is diluted and the film itself is forgettable. All this with a quiz about other takes on this much-adapted work and an impression of Richard Burton. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/274

Ed opperman interview Mark Shaw about the murder of Dorothy KilgallenWas What's My Line TV Star, media icon, and crack investigative reporter and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen murdered for writing a tell-all book about the JFK assassination? If so, is the main suspect in her death still at large? These questions and more are answered in former CNN, ESPN, and USA Today legal analyst Mark Shaw's 25th book, The Reporter Who Knew Too Much. Through discovery of never-before-seen videotaped eyewitness interviews with those closest to Kilgallen and secret government documents, Shaw unfolds a “whodunit” murder mystery featuring suspects including Frank Sinatra, J. Edgar Hoover, Mafia Don Carlos Marcello and a "Mystery Man" who may have silenced Kilgallen. All while by presenting through Kilgallen's eyes the most compelling evidence about the JFK assassinations since the House Select Committee on Assassination's investigation in the 1970s.Called by the New York Post, “the most powerful female voice in America,” and by acclaimed author Mark Lane the “the only serious journalist in America who was concerned with who killed John Kennedy and getting all of the facts about the assassination,” Kilgallen's official cause of death reported as an overdose of barbiturates combined with alcohol, has always been suspect since no investigation occurred despite the death scene having been staged. Shaw proves Kilgallen, a remarkable woman who broke the "glass ceiling" before the term became fashionable, was denied the justice she deserved, that is until now. More about the book may be learned at thereporterwhoknewtoomuch.com or thedorothykilgallenstory.org.Part Two Ed Opperman interviews Daniel Hopsicker, Author of Barry and The Boys, about Barry Seal the CIA cocaine smuggler durring Iran Contra and the subject of the Tom Cruise movie American MadeNOTE: Chapter 35 is intentionally missing from the printing of this publication. On August 19, 2012, Tony Scott — the British filmmaker best known for high-octane blockbusters like Top Gun, Crimson Tide, and Man on Fire — died by suicide at the age of 68 in Los Angeles. In a career that stretched across three decades, Scott carved out a unique place in Hollywood as a master of adrenaline-fueled spectacle. With his signature visual style — kinetic camerawork, bold color palettes, and an editing pace that matched the heartbeat of his action sequences — he helped redefine what a mainstream action movie could feel like. From working with stars like Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington to pushing the technical limits of action cinema, Scott's influence continues to ripple through blockbuster filmmaking today.
