It is a well-known trope that although failure is a challenge rapid success, though more desirable lol, can be too. In this episode we dive into the fascinating Case Study of Ecospend who went from startup to trade sale to world open-banking payments leaders Trustly in five years. Along the way they beat off incumbent competition for one of the UK's largest accounts that of HSBCs self-assessment payments. Which as you might imagine amounts to quite a few transactions. In this show James Hickman, CCO, discusses the journey and the experience thereof along with lessons relevant to all tech firms well outside of Fintech. The journey starts with the build, then the marketing, then astronomical success, then the operational concerns attendant on having your volumes increase astronomically up all the way to the strategic implications for a business with such sudden success – various possibilities for raises to enable continued scaling or a trade sale and Ecospend checked-out both eventually preferring one route over t'other and explain their thinking in their situation, your firms might of course be different. At the end of the day it comes down both to rational business calculation but also to the preferences and long term aims of the founding team. Overall quite some story and a tale that the cliche that massive success can be a right challenge/pain isn't always correct. Topics discussed include: James career in the media including as a media VC experiencing the massive tech disruption in the media world interest in open banking and pivoting from a long media career into Fintech processing £13bn within a few years of founding a firm is it risky having no “physical bank” bank accounts the pivotal role of getting the tech right right from the start in terms of the whole rest of the business chain that flows therefrom “anti-MVP” scaling tech volumes scalability of systems “if you are a small business you should start by servicing a small customer and build from there. Hello and welcome to the latest episode of the Leadership in Insurance Podcast, it's a very special episode this week and the last episode in our #LiveFromITI series
Join FPC Executive Director Reed Luhtanen as he goes off the rails with Alex Gonthier, CEO and Founder of Trustly. Reed and Alex talk about the experience with faster payments in the UK, the plusses and minuses of irrevocability, and his picks for dining out in Paris.
My guest this week has a fascinating history indeed. He speaks 5 languages, has lived in 6 countries and has a genuine passion for solving customer problems. In fact, he's only interested in tech that can manifest solutions. Trustly CEO Alexandre Gonthier is a true trailblazer when it comes to payments. For those of you who may not know, Trustly is an alternative payment method for consumers that enables them to pay with their bank account by signing into their online banking. It's a formless user experience with absolutely zero reliance on card networks or card rails, and their target audience includes billers, online gaming, financial services, and ecommerce merchants with low transaction volume and high frequency. The original pain point they set out to solve was how to the bring paper check methodology alive in a mobile first world. From there side, billers were having a challenging time getting ACH adoption from their mobile customers. They needed an experience where people didn't have to remember their routing and account credentials just to satisfy their payment. And why was this such a good niche? Because, according to Alex, 30 to 50% of Americans still prefer to pay their bills using their bank account. As for their competitive advantage, Alex touts a user experience paradigm that is formless, more secure, more economical and more revenue efficient. The capacity to process payments outside of the card networks offers less fraud and higher transaction approval rates.Tune in this week to hear Alex talk about his journey to CEO, including why we have him to think for the first content charging platform and the first proximity payments platform, as well as where he sees the industry going in the next 2 to 3 years as it relates to real-time transactions, crypto, blockchain, and stablecoin.
Join FPC Executive Director Reed Luhtanen as he goes off the rails with Dean Nolan from Fifth Third Bank and Moa Agrell from Trustly to talk about the work the pair is leading in the FPC's API work group, the implications of irrevocability, fraud, and the prospects for APIs to catalyze the use of instant payments. This week marks the last episode for our Pulse series featuring Open Banking platform Trustly. And to close it out with a bang, I have Trustly President of North America Pete Ohser. Pete is a true industry veteran with more than 20 years in the payments space and a byline that includes an integral part in developing the first risk system for online money transfer platforms. In his own words, Trustly is “a payments company that does data really, really well.” They have been in the marketplace since 2008, originating in Europe where the Open Banking platforms are much more widely used. But according to Pete, the U.S. is primed for adoption and the need is growing at a rapid pace. What are some of the main motivators for early adopters? A lot of it has to do with speed and low-cost payment options. And when it comes to the benefits, they are strong on both sides of the equation. From a merchant perspective, they have less risk, an amazing user experience and all at a lower cost. From a customer perspective, Pete focuses on the value that comes with enabling them to build a relationship with their bank data that goes beyond what certain banks have the capacity to offer. According to him, “the world is ready for alternatives to cards” and Trustly has a strong commitment to blazing that trail in the Open Banking space. Tune in and hear him talk about the journey of open banking from the EU perspective, the rise of adoption in the U.S. and what the future looks like for Open Banking as it relates to the simplification of cross-border payments, geographic expansion, greater bank regulation and the possibility of one single API to hit the entire world.
Our Open Banking pulse this week is on Trustly VP of North American Bank Partnerships Eric Foust – and for good reason! Not only is Eric a 20-year veteran in the banking space, he's also the first VP I've had the pleasure of speaking with that has almost a super-hero theme to his roles and responsibilities within the Trustly empire. His chosen staff? A Trident. And the responsibilities represented by the three prongs? 1. Facilitating all of Trustly's banking relationships concerned with originating depository financial institutions (ODFI).2. Overseeing all of Trustly's Open Banking support for financial institutions in the U.S.3. Collaborating with corporate bank partners to become resellers of the Trustly product suite. So, to say this podcast is full of invaluable takeaways would be an understatement. For those of you that may not have a baseline on the Trustly brand, they processed more than $10 billion in 2021, with more than 10 million users here in North America and just closed out a YOY growth revenue increase of 537% in the North American territory alone.Impressed? I was too! And listening to Eric discuss the Open Banking ecosystem is fascinating. He relates it to a stage of actors that feature the consumer as the main character (of course) and the merchant as the supporting role with other notable performances given by the banks (or keyholders) and the fintechs (technology wizards). Tune in to hear him share his invaluable perspective on the Open Banking concept from the frontline – including the three pillars of regulation, lessons from across the pond and what the future looks like as it relates to standardization and 24/7/365 banking.

As we continue this month with our focus on Open Banking, our pulse is on Trustly – a well-established open banking platform that enables merchant commerce, via ACH, in a manner that reduces fraud and promotes a more seamless payments flow. Today, I talk with Chief Legal Officer Kathryn McCall about Trustly as both a rapidly growing company and a true leader in our industry. For those of you that may not know, the Trustly brand was launched in the U.S through a merger with local platform PayWithMyBank. To say that this partnership was well-matched is an understatement as the already-established Trustly brand facilitated a significant growth spurt for the company's overall market share. And since 2018, Trustly has grown exponentially from just 20 employees to 300! Hearing Kathryn talk about the nuances of this merger is a fascinating glimpse into the difference between the U.S. and EU ecosystems. Both are well-established, but the EU is much more effortlessly driven towards the open banking concept largely because they were early adopters of the bank transfer model. Their ecosystem has been thriving on it for decades. The U.S. ecosystem, on the other hand, still gravitates largely towards card and (though less prevalent now) check payments. Not to mention, the challenges the EU presents with cross-border rules and regulations offer an interesting spin on cross-border commerce. Tune in to hear how Trustly has had to adapt in order to establish and grow their global footprint, as well as how the benefits of open banking differ from the merchant versus the consumer side, and what the future looks like as we charge forward towards automation and digitization.
For those of you looking to quantify and understand all the benefits of open banking, you've come to the right place! In this Pulse of Payments episode, I speak with Trustly VP of Enterprise Growth Ross McFerrin – a self-proclaimed payments geek admittedly obsessed with the innovation and disruption within our dynamic ecosystem. Open banking, by definition, is the use of open APIs that enable developers to build applications and services around the financial institution. So, what do companies like Trustly provide in the way of innovation and disruption? Simply stated, they make ACH a viable method of payment within the digital commerce space. And this is a big win for merchants because it offers them a payment alternative to card that is less risky and more cost effective. In the ecommerce space, Trustly thrives as an alternative to card because they can guarantee payments with no chargebacks and at a cost that is much lower. When it comes to travel, merchants appreciate the level of security and confidence experienced on both sides of the payments loop and the fintech space also benefits from open banking options to help facilitate various offerings including NACHA compliance, loan underwriting, RTP disbursement and the funding of crypto wallets. But, truly, Trustly offers benefits on both side of the payments equation. Merchants realize material savings from a payments standpoint, have the capacity to deliver a payments experience that resonates well with the younger generations and can even benefit from future-proofing their business as real-time rails become more ubiquitous. Consumers, on the other hand, unlock value in the form of more benefit-driven incentives offered by the merchants they choose to transact with. In this episode we'll answer - how is open banking shaping our industry and what do we have to look forward to in the very near future.

Innovation is the key to keeping players interested in online casinos. However, one thing had always been the same — every online casino required players to register an account, until Pay N Play casinos showed up. Did you know that more than 20% of players give up joining an online casino during the registration process? In most cases, it's a point where a casino asks players to verify their identity by providing a copy of an ID, a passport, or a utility bill. To some, it's a major invasion of privacy, and it's a step that they prefer not to take. Launched by Trustly in 2015, the Pay N Play platform is the perfect option for those who don't like sharing personal information online. Today, certain online casinos partnered up with Trustly and began offering the Pay N Play service to their players. Therefore, you can now make deposits and withdrawals, and play your favourite games without going through the registration process. In our guide, you'll learn how this service works and discover the benefits of choosing to play in Pay N Play online casinos. Win Real Money at Pay N Play Casinos We have compiled a list of some great Pay N Play Casinos where you can play your favourite games and win real money. Online gambling platforms go out of their way to introduce attractive bonuses to players. If you were wondering whether Pay N Play casinos offer bonuses, we are here to solve the mystery. There is a variety of promotions and casino bonuses available on Pay N Play gambling sites! While it's still a new concept that has yet to win over the rest of the world, certain casinos using the Pay N Play system offer different incentives to both new and existing players. To give you a clear overview of promotions you can find on these sites, we've created a short guide to the most common types found on Pay N Play casinos. Let's have a look together. Welcome Bonus If you've ever visited an online casino, you know that welcome bonuses are offered exclusively to new players. They serve to entice players into signing up and give a boost to their gambling session. In most cases, Pay N Play online casinos offer a welcome bonus package consisting of two separate promotions — it can be a mix of a match deposit bonus and free spins. No Deposit Bonus This bonus is usually a favourite among new players. As the name suggests, you don't need to make the initial deposit — the casino will award you just for joining the platform. No deposit bonuses appear in your account as soon as you register, and you can use them on a wide range of games. Free Spins Free spins are among the most common promotions you'll find in online casinos, Pay N Play casinos included. They can come as part of the welcome bonus package, or they can be a separate promotion. More often than not, free spins are reserved for a specific slot game available in the game catalogue. Players enjoy using free spins because they don't need to wager their money right away — they can simply use the free spins bonus. VIP Bonuses and Loyalty Schemes For some players, having a fantastic welcome bonus isn't enough. Fortunately, online casinos have found a way to keep the existing players interested by rewarding them for their loyalty w...

In the world of online gambling, there are plenty of different types of casinos, and some of the more popular ones are no account casinos. As the name suggests, these online casinos don't require you to create an account to play casino games. However, despite sounding so simple, there's actually a lot you should know about these casinos before you start playing there. That's precisely where we want to assist you. In this piece, you'll learn everything there is to know about no account casinos. By the end of the article, you'll know how they work, how to play in them, what the advantages of no account casinos are and what the disadvantages of no account casinos are, and more. Keep reading to find out! How No Account Casinos Work All you need to do in a no account casino is to make a deposit and start playing your favourite games. And that's it. You do this without registration and everything else that goes with it. In essence, you save your time, and you don't have to become a part of a website where you need to give loads of personal information. This makes no account casinos perfect for the players who worry about giving out their personal information to a gambling website or those who don't want the hassle of having to register on a site. At the moment, there are two types of no account casinos: No account casinos Regular casinos with a no account option The second option is very rare, and it functions in the same way as it does with regular no account casinos, so we'll mostly focus on these casino websites that don't require you to go through a registration process at all. Many people think that this type of online casino is unreal because every casino needs your information, or else you wouldn't be able to play with real money. However, payment methods like Trustly and cryptocurrencies make this possible. They don't require additional information, which is why casinos can reduce the signup process to simple deposits. Once you make a deposit, you can start playing any of the casino games the website offers. Almost every no account casino has a massive library of casino games, as most software developers, including more prominent names like NetEnt, have found the no account option to be more than possible and entirely safe. As for you, the more games from reputable developers you find on such a casino, the more trustworthy and secure it becomes. After you've played for a while and won some money, you can make a withdrawal that will function in the same way as the deposit. Plus, it will always be quite fast due to the effectiveness of payment methods like Trustly and cryptocurrencies. Take a listen to Craig McDonald, Chief Business Officer of Trustly and George as they discuss how Trustly makes its proposition possible. While Trustly is ramping up its U.S. presence, it does have timing on its side. In this pandemic-constrained age, merchants will be looking for lower cost payments and certainty. Trustly appears to have attributes to meet those concerns. In our payments education and payments consulting work, we frequently discuss payments “rails” - the networks and systems that move money either between banks in the open lop payments model or within a single operator’s closed loop network. Think cards, wires, and ACH when you hear “open loop.” Think PayPal when you hear “closed loop.” Each set of rails connects to an account of some kind. And has to present itself to the end user to make payment initiation easy. We know how to write a check and understand how a wire is initiated. We all know how to initiate a card transaction at both the physical point of sale and online. There’s another important system that most of use all the time if we’re employed. If we actually use it to send a payment, we might know what it’s really called. That, of course, is the automated clearing house, the ACH system. The ACH has incredible attributes. Almost every financial institution connects to it so the network effect is huge. And, for the financial institutions that use it, it’s very inexpensive. It can be used to both credit or debit an account. But it has some big shortcomings, too. It runs in batch, overnight and a couple of times during the day. It is not a real time payment. There is no authorization. And when a debit transaction is initiated, the system has no way of knowing if there are funds in the account to be debited. A number of companies have come and gone over the years who have tried to take advantage of its cost and ubiquity but have been unable to overcome competition from cards, especially debit cards, or the challenges of fraud and security. But more modern tools are available today from both the technology and the rules/regulations angles that make the ability to pay a merchant from one’s own bank account, certain for both parties, possible. That’s the topic of this Payments on Fire® episode. Trustly has combined broad connectivity into the ACH system with machine learning to effectively guarantee payments to merchants at a lower cost than debit cards. It’s a fascinating example of how new tech can broaden the utility of a system that is decades old.
