Hey hey PartnerUp, we're back-to-back with another show and a little bit of back-to-the-basics. You might be thinking you have your fundamentals down, but I challenge you to spend the 7 months Stephen spent honing Marketo's program relaunch! Great ecosystems aren't brainstormed on one slide deck and shipped... Today's guest is Stephen Ceplenski who designed and managed Marketo's Partner Program structures and tiers. He also worked on amorphous metals used in spaceflight. Whoah.I've seen Stephen's program structure work first hand. All 900 cells! And let me tell you, you are going to want to take a similar approach if you want an ecosystem that lasts.Everyone says to keep program design "simple" but the reality is ecosystems are complex. Stephen makes quite the case for seeing the full picture before leaving vital pieces of your partner program blindly behind on the cutting room floor. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or anywhere you get your pods on the go. If you liked the show, share the episode with your commentary on LinkedIn and hash #partnerup #partnerships. Hello dear listeners! James Bond lore is replete with missed opportunities, "what ifs", and close calls. If only someone had the wherewithal to research, investigate, and collect all of those glorious potential stories into a single compendium.  There is such a person in fact! This week on the show we welcome filmmaker, documentarian, writer Mark Edlitz, who in late 2020 published "The Lost Adventures of James Bond: Timothy Dalton's Third and Fourth Bond Films, James Bond Jr...& Other Unmade or Forgotten 007 Projects." Whoah, that title is bit of a mouthful but that's only because there is a goldmine of brilliant content from the front cover (courtesy of fan favourite artist Sean Longmore) to the back. Mark was more than generous to spend some time with Matt and Edgar on a Sunday afternoon to discuss the his journey as a writer and Bond fan, the book's genesis, as well as plenty of juicy tidbits. We won't spoil too much for the listeners, nor do we in the episode itself, but among the sensational teases are Dalton's comedically tinged Bond film, Sean Connery vs a Yeti monster, Tobe Stephens' multifaceted vocal interpretations of James Bond, and more James Bond Jr. behind the scenes content than most people would ever guess they could read about.  So sit back, relax, and come with us as we imagine how all these forgotten, misplaced, and never made stories play in our heads.  Check out Mark Edlitz online on Twitter at https://twitter.com/MarkEdlitz or at http://www.markedlitz.com Make sure to purchase a copy of "The Lost Adventures of James Bond" on Amazon!

There was no doubt about it–the old man’s coordinates were in the Orubus Belt. The Belt was a lawless zone, claimed by none of the prefectures. Whispers of missing ships and entire crews gone mad kept all but the most foolhardy of adventurers far from its borders. All trade routes between neighboring systems circumnavigated it, leaving the Belt almost entirely uncharted. Zuli was a more than a little apprehensive, but she had promised to deliver the old man to his coordinates. And Zuli was not one to break her promises. Zuli made the sign of the Prophets across her face and muttered a short prayer. She pressed the comm button next to the navigational display on her console. “Are you certain of these coordinates?” Zuli said. “They are taking us into…” “Yes, I’m sure!” the old man’s voice came crackling over the comm system. “I know where it’s taking us. You promised! You can’t back out now!” Zuli frowned. She had no intention of breaking her promise. “No worries,” Zuli said. “The Prophets shall watch over us, even in the Orubus Belt.” “Yeah, yeah,” the old man’s voice blurted. “Just let me know when we approach the coordinates. I’ll have preparations to make.” Zuli scowled and released her finger from the comm button. She made the sign of the Prophets once more and asked for a blessing of patience. Zuli had taken pity on the old man at the New Antilles spaceport. She noticed him at the docks, dragging his large cargo container behind him and begging every passing merchant and trader for passage aboard their ship. Those who didn’t ignore him outright were quick to dismiss him once they learned of his destination. Now Zuli understood why. Zuli flicked her finger across the navigational chart on her console and flung it to the bridge’s main display. A spider web of specks and lines appeared near the bottom of the large glass screen, illuminating Zuli’s face with their dull green glow. The top half of the screen remained ominously blank. The blank space gradually expanded downward, pushing the web of charted systems and trade routes off the bottom edge of the display. Soon they would cross the border into the Orubus Belt. A red dot started flashing inside the empty map of the Orubus Belt. Zuli blinked and stared at the spot. The hairs on the back of her neck tingled, the way they always did when the Prophets were about to test her. Pulsing concentric circles expanded around the dot and faded away, like ripples in a red pond. A distress signal! Based on its proximity to their destination, intercepting the distress signal would require a slight deviation from their current heading. She tapped the alteration into her control panel, and felt an almost imperceptible shudder from the ship as it adjusted course. “What are you doing? Why have you changed course?” the old man’s voice boomed over the comm. “You promised!” Zuli sighed. “No worries, friend,” she replied. “I have detected a distress signal not far from your coordinates. I must investigate and help if I can. It is on the way.” “No!” cried the old man. “You promised to take me!” “I did promise,” said Zuli. “And I will take you. If you are unhappy with the path the Prophets have chosen for me then you are free to disembark and seek another ship whose captain is more willing to…” “Gah!” the old man cut Zuli off with a frustrated grunt. “Do what you must, but remember your promise.” Zuli sighed. The ship’s sensors indicated that the old man was still in the cargo hold. “It will be several cycles yet before we reach the distress signal or your destination,” she said into the comm. “Perhaps you would be more comfortable in one of the crew quarters, or here on the bridge with me.” “I’m fine where I am,” said the old man. The old man’s answer didn’t come as a surprise. He hadn’t left his cargo container alone for a nanocycle since boarding the ship. It was, perhaps, for the best; Zuli didn’t think he’d be very good company on the bridge. Something about the old man’s demeanor and the way he coddled that cargo container unsettled Zuli in a way she had never experienced before. Zuli released the comm button and returned her attention to the main display. The red pulsating dot–still alone in the wide empty space of the Orubus Belt–captivated her. She had heard dozens of tales of the Orubus Belt, and dismissed them as absurd. But now, as they approached its border, the seeds of doubt crept into her mind. The tales often told of dark, incomprehensible cosmic forces dwelling deep within the Belt. Zuli closed her eyes, recalling the horrific tales, and wondering what the Prophets had in store for her. Desmond sat under the desert planet’s perpetual night sky at the edge of what used to be a giant sand-worm pit. The nightly howling windstorms had filled it up, burying the sand-worm’s remains and turning the pit into more of a slight depression. Desmond stroked Bae in his lap and listened to Doyle calling Sarah to join them outside of the ship. “I am not eating one more of those… Those things!” Sarah shouted from inside. “Fine,” said Doyle, looking down at the mound of oozing baby sand-worms in his arms. “Just promise me you’ll crawl off somewhere before the end, I don’t want to see what death by starvation looks like.” That could take a while, thought Desmond. With an adequate supply of water even the frailest of human-derived species could potentially live for months without food. Desmond wondered how he knew that. It seemed to him that ever since he managed to side-load himself into the strange robot that now served as his body, he had gradually been gaining access to new knowledge. He was still an unprivileged user process running on the robot, though. Without root access, most of the robot’s systems outside of basic sensory input and motor functions remained an inaccessible mystery to him. “Don’t worry I’ll keep my distance,” Sarah called back. “The stench will keep me away.” Doyle sniffed his armpit and scrunched his nose. “Oh, you’re one to talk,” Doyle yelled toward the door of the ship. “Not exactly miss cinnamon and spice yourself.” Doyle trudged across the sand to where Desmond was sitting. He tossed the armful of baby sand-worms onto the ground. Bae leapt from Desmond’s lap to eat them. Doyle sighed as he watched the animal gleefully munching and snorting. “Is there anything we can do to get the stove or the bath back? Even for just a few hours?” Doyle asked Desmond. Desmond shook his head. “No bueno, bruh. There’s barely enough juice for the water purification and distress beacon.” Sighing, Doyle collapsed to a sitting position next to the pile of sand-worms. He grabbed one and shoved it in his mouth, making a face of disgust as he swallowed. “Any response to the beacon?” “Nah, it’s one-way. If there’s a response you’ll know. Dudes will just show up.” Sarah appeared at the ship’s doorway. She stomped across the sand to where Desmond and Doyle were sitting and, without saying a word, scooped a handful of baby sand-worms from the pile. Bae bounded after Sarah as she headed back to the ship. “You know,” said Desmond. Sarah stopped, her back still turned. “I think Heady would be pretty impressed with you guys,” continued Desmond. “He consumed thirty seven point five bugs in all the videos I had access to on the Ark. You guys probably got him beat a hundred times over by now. You should be proud.” Doyle gave a snort of laughter. “Fuck it,” said Sarah. She turned and sat down next to Doyle and Desmond. “I’ll do it for the content.” Sarah ate a worm. Desmond looked past Sarah to the large mound of sand in the distance where he had buried Bae’s mother. In spite of Doyle’s objections, Sarah had refused to consider the large rhino-pig’s potential value as a food source. The supply of baby sand-worms had also been dwindling since Desmond had killed the giant worm. Desmond had noted that the rate at which Sarah and Doyle were losing weight had accelerated, and both were suffering from a lack of energy. He wasn’t sure how much longer they could survive like this. A sudden gust of wind from above kicked sand up around the ship. Bae snorted and scurried over to Sarah, who scooped the tiny animal up in her lap. Another gust of wind hit, harder this time. “Is that a sandstorm?” asked Doyle. Desmond looked up. “Nah, bruh,” he said, and pointed. “Look!” A glowing spherical craft descended from the sky, blasting gusts of wind downward as it slowed. It settled on the sand twenty feet from the awe-struck trio. Desmond got to his feet and grabbed grub-smasher–the large metal scrap that Doyle used when fishing for sand-worms. The sphere went dark, then a doorway slid open and a ramp extended to the ground. A woman with short silver hair and orange eyes stepped out of the ship. Her silky dark blue robe flowed hypnotically in the wind. The woman made a gesture in front of her face with her hand, then started to speak. Desmond did not recognize the language. Doyle jumped to his feet. “Yeah! Oh God do we ever!” he cried, and started approaching the woman. “Dude, keep back, we don’t know why she’s here yet…” said Desmond. “What? She got the distress signal! She literally just asked if we needed a ride,” Doyle said. “Wait, you can understand her?” asked Sarah. A confused expression crossed Doyle’s face. He ran a finger across his forehead, like he was feeling for something. “Yeah,” said Doyle. “I mean, I know she’s not speaking English, but I understood every word she said.” The woman spoke again. “That’s right!” said Doyle. “That asshole who took the Ark, he shot something onto my forehead. She said it’s like a universal translator or something.” “Universal translator?” said Sarah. “What is this, Star Trek?” “Fascinating,” said Desmond. “The man who took your ship gave you this?” Zuli asked, turning the small white slate over in her hands. Its black markings didn’t look like any language she was familiar with. The man named Doyle stuffed two more green food cubes into his already-full mouth and nodded. “I’m sorry but I have no idea what this is,” said Zuli. She handed the slate back to Doyle. The man and his young female companion ate ravenously as Zuli watched. “So the two of you were stranded all alone on that planet? You poor things,” said Zuli. “Four of us,” said the girl named Sarah. Sarah pointed at the large robot who sat silent at the end of the mess-hall table, and at the tiny creature in her lap. “Ah, yes, my apologies,” said Zuli, bowing her head. The translator patch that Zuli had fabricated for the girl seemed to be working, but she couldn’t do anything for the robot. The robot had not understood any of the languages that Zuli knew how to speak, leaving her with no means of direct communication with the machine. The robot spoke to Doyle in their native tongue. Doyle nodded, then turned to Zuli. “Desmond says if you’ll grant him access to your ship’s computers, he can try to learn your language,” said Doyle. The robot spoke to Doyle again. “Also he wants to know if he can recharge somewhere.” “Of course,” said Zuli. “As you must eat food to live, your friend must also have sustenance. Desmond may join me on the bridge to interface with the computers and recharge once you are finished eating.” Zuli continued to watch Doyle and Sarah as they ate. The poor things were starving–she wondered what they had been surviving on, stranded for so long on that desert planet. They looked malnourished by any humanoid standards, and their clothing was ragged and stained. “I imagine you two could use some rest,” she said. “Perhaps while Desmond accompanies me to the bridge, you two would like to avail yourselves of the beds, baths, and clean clothes in this ship’s crew quarters…” “Baths!?” Sarah interrupted. Chunks of green food cube and spittle sprayed from her mouth. “Did you say baths?” Zuli smiled and nodded. “Please, for as long as the Prophets’ paths for us are aligned, this ship is your home as much as it is mine. There is one other passenger, an old man who has requested transport to coordinates that we currently approach. Once we have delivered him to his destination, I shall help you find your ship, if that is your wish.” Doyle grinned and nodded. Sarah shrugged and continued eating. The strange robot continued to sit in silence. Zuli crossed her hands in her lap and quietly asked the Prophets to bless her and her new companions as they ventured deeper into the Orubus Belt. Sarah stared awe-struck at a small nozzle jutting from the wall above her tub. The mere idea of soap had become such a distant memory that she refused to get excited. Then she tapped the dispenser and the minty aroma filled her nostrils and she felt like she might cry. It was the longest, most luxurious bath Sarah had taken in all the twenty two years she had been alive. She had shampooed her hair five times before it started to resemble something she was familiar with. She had initially avoided looking at the bathroom’s body-length mirror, afraid of what she might see. But after her bath, she managed to muster the courage. Sarah didn’t recognize the frail, alarmingly thin girl who stared back at her from the mirror. She used her finger to trace the hollow depression under her rib cage where her belly used to be, then the sunken shadows around her eyes. She wasn’t hungry–she felt bloated and wished she had eaten less of the green cubes that Zuli had given them. She wondered how that idiot Doyle was doing–the way he scarfed down those cubes had been embarrassing. He probably ate ten times the amount Sarah had. Despite her tummy ache, the bath had invigorated Sarah, and she decided to do some exploring before bed. She left her soiled security uniform on the bathroom floor and headed to her closet to find it stocked with clean clothes. Sarah dressed in a pair of tan cloth pants and a black silk top that fit her well enough, along with a pair of slippers. When Sarah opened the door that led to the ship, Bae jolted up, leaped from the bed, and bounded out behind her. To Sarah, the ship felt strangely reminiscent of the Nikola’s Children compound back on Earth. Clean, colorless, utilitarian hallways and rooms that served their purpose with little flourish. Everything in the ship seemed somehow softer than the compound had been. Rounded corners replaced sharp right angles. Instead of solid concrete, the floor felt slightly spongy, as though carpeted with a thin layer of rubber. The walls felt smoother–like some kind of plastic. The lighting–provided by a continuous illuminated strip running along the center of all the ship’s walls–felt warmer than the compound’s harsh fluorescents. It felt strange to think that her life with Nikola’s Children was over. She had spent almost her entire life inside the compound. Sarah had known it would end–they drilled the idea of colonizing the New Home into all the kids who grew up there, but that idea never seemed entirely real. Sarah had believed only because It’s what her father told her to believe. After Sarah passed through the mess hall and into another hallway, the lights flickered and took on a reddish hue. Sarah’s vision went hazy and she felt nauseated. Was it the ship that was trembling? Or her?. A whispering noise tickled the edge of Sarah’s perception. The whispering washed over her in waves, coming from further down the hall. Sarah placed her hand on one wall, bracing herself, and took a few shaky steps. Bae made distressed noises at her feet. “Shhh,” Sarah hushed the rhino-pig as she followed the whispering to its source. As she drew closer it sounded like a man’s voice, coming from a room further down the hall. Sarah stepped gingerly as she approached the doorway, then peeked inside. Stacks of gray crates filled the room, surrounding an old man at its center. Beneath a dark, hooded robe Sarah saw the man’s thin white beard below his shadowy, sunken eyes. He stood next to a container–different from the others in the room–and muttered at it. When his back turned, Sarah crept into the room and hid behind a crate. “We’ll be together again soon,” the man said in a strained, raspy voice. “I’ll perform the sacrament. I’ll deliver the sacrifice. Blood for blood. Blood for…” The old man started whimpering. Was he crying? “Oh my child,” said the man. “Oh my sweet, sweet child what have I done? What have I become?” The ship trembled and Sarah’s vision went blurry again. Fear gripped her chest. She leaned her back against the crate, breathing heavily. The old man’s raspy weeping terrified her. The noise of somebody falling in the hallway startled Sarah. “What was that? Who’s there?” the old man barked. Sarah grabbed Bae and scuttled to the other side of the crate, barely avoiding the old man’s gaze as he walked past on his way out of the room. The sound of the old man in the hallway faded. Sarah stood and looked at the container that the old man had been talking to. The ship trembled. The lights flickered. Sarah’s head felt hazy, like a fog had descended upon her senses. She walked to the container, and knelt to study it. There was a small dial at its base. The sense of dread that had gripped Sarah intensified, but she felt compelled to twist the dial. Bae backed away, growling. The container’s locking mechanism clicked, and white mist vented from its sides. Bae yelped, then scampered away. Sarah’s heart pounded as she gripped the edges of the lid, and pried it open. The billowing mist in the open container gradually thinned, revealing its grisly contents. Sarah’s eyes widened, and she gasped. Doyle rolled around on the sweat-soaked sheets covering the bed in his quarters. The discomfort had started while eating, and had grown into a bowling-ball sized pain in his gut. Laying on his back, Doyle tried massaging his abdomen, sending shivers of pain through his whole body. He swung his legs over and sat up on the edge of his bed. Did the ship have any laxatives? Did laxatives even exist three million years in the future? His legs wobbled as he stood up. Clutching his stomach, Doyle walked into the bathroom and splashed water on his face. He studied himself in the mirror. His grime-stained beard–fuller than it had ever been–was in stark contrast against the fresh, clean clothes he had managed to change into earlier. He needed to shave and clean up, but first he had to deal with the pain. Doyle stumbled across his quarters and out into the hallway. He started in the direction of the mess hall. Maybe there was medicine there, or maybe he could find some kind of sickbay. A ship this big had to have medical facilities. All Doyle knew was that bad things were happening inside of him, and he needed help. As he lurched through the hallway, Doyle felt his body tremble. Was that me, he thought, or did the whole ship shake? He remembered the tremors on the desert planet. His eyes darted to the ground. Was it… moving? His vision blurred and spun. The ground swirled, collapsing beneath him like a whirlpool of sand. The sand-worm, thought Doyle. How did it get on the ship? A sudden jolt of pain in Doyle’s abdomen sent him crashing to his knees. He clutched his stomach. There was a shriek–the sand-worm was attacking! Doyle raised his arms to cover his face. He opened his eyes, expecting to see the giant creature’s rows of concentric teeth closing in around him, but all he saw was the hallway ceiling. There was no shrieking monster. There was only Doyle, screaming at phantoms in his delirium. Doyle struggled back to his feet and continued down the hallway. He regretted eating all those food cubes. He regretted leaving his quarters. He should have tried to call Zuli for help. The quarters had nothing obvious like a telephone, but there were panels and buttons on the walls–surely there was something he could have used to communicate. Doyle reached the mess hall and spotted some green food cube leftovers. The sight made him retch. This was a terrible idea, he thought. Doyle rushed past the tables and chairs and into the hallway on the opposite side of the hall. He felt his legs–or the ship?–tremble again and he lost his balance. He teetered sideways and slammed hard into the wall before collapsing to the ground. “What was that? Who’s there?” Doyle heard a voice say from further down the hall. It was a man’s voice he didn’t recognize. “Help,” Doyle tried to yell. It came out as more of a hoarse whisper. “Get Zuli, I need help.” Through pain and blurry vision, Doyle saw what looked like an old man in a dark hooded robe approaching. “Yes,” said the old man. Doyle’s spirits lifted. He had done it! He had found help! The old man, Doyle’s savior, spoke as Doyle’s senses faded and he lost his grip on consciousness. “Yes,” the man said again. “You’ll do nicely.” “We’re less than a cycle away now, I should let the old man know,” said Zuli. She sat in a chair at the center of the bridge, facing a large curved glass display behind an array of control panels. Desmond was plugged into one of the control panels, charging his power banks and providing him access to the ship’s data stores. “My friends?” Desmond asked. He had learned enough of the woman’s language from the ship’s computer for rudimentary communications. It surprised him how efficiently his body was able to run his training routines–the Ark’s computers had processed data at a snail’s pace by comparison. “In their quarters,” said Zuli, after glancing at one of the control panels. “Getting some rest, I hope. They looked… weary.” “They had, difficult time on planet,” said Desmond. Zuli nodded. “It is good that the Prophets led me to you.” “Prophets?” Desmond asked. The word Zuli had used was unknown to him. “Yes, the Prophets,” said Zuli. “You do not know the Prophets? You have no… religion?” Desmond recognized that word. Heady Armstrong, the Youtuber whose videos his training routines had ingested for three million years, had strong opinions about religion. “Ah, religion,” said Desmond. “No, I have no religion.” Zuli nodded somberly. “Perhaps I can teach you of…” The ship shook slightly and one of the panels in front of Zuli started flashing. Desmond’s training algorithms stopped executing. Running diagnostics on his connection to the ship didn’t reveal any obvious problems. Why had his body terminated the processes? He stepped closer to Zuli and looked at the control panel. “What happened?” asked Desmond. “I do not know,” said Zuli. “A millicycle ago there was nothing at the old man’s coordinates. Now there is something.” “Something?” asked Desmond. “Yes,” said Zuli. She looked up at Desmond. “Oh! You are glowing!” Desmond looked down. Glowing blue lines had appeared, tracing intricate geometric patterns over his body. His body started spinning up dozens of new processes that he had never seen execute before. “Are we close to it?” asked Desmond. “Too close,” said Zuli. “I cannot stop our approach. The ship has stopped responding.” The ship shuddered again. “Can I see?” asked Desmond, pointing at the large curved glass panel. “Yes,” said Zuli. She made some gestures against the control panel, and the large glass display went dark. “Is that it?” asked Desmond. Zuli nodded and pointed at the large darkened screen. “Something is there,” she said. Desmond looked again. There was a spot at the center of the screen that looked darker than its surroundings. Desmond adjusted the gamma of his ocular sensors to get a better look. The dark mass at the center of the screen seemed to be moving–like its surface was a living, writhing thing. A series of whirring and clacking noises rang through the bridge. Desmond felt his body moving on its own, lowering its center of gravity, exposing concealed components. Canons extended from his forearms; his legs divided into an array of spider-like limbs; a device extended from his back and emitted a flash of blue light, surrounding Desmond’s transformed body in a translucent, shimmering honey-combed shield. Even if Desmond didn’t know what that thing on the screen was, his body did–and its response was to prepare for battle. “We should leave,” said Desmond. Zuli stared with her mouth open. “I am trying,” she said. An alarm sounded and another panel started blinking. Zuli tore her eyes from Desmond to look at it. “There is a new problem!” she cried. “What is it?” asked Desmond. “One of the ship’s airlocks is opening,” she said. “Your friend is inside!” “Whoah,” said Desmond. He tested his control over his new robot spider legs and prepared to see how fast they could go. “Tell me where.” – It was a child. Or at least what remained of one. Sarah stared at the grotesque figure inside the container in horror. It couldn’t have been more than five or six when it had died. The body was too twisted and mutilated to tell if it had been a boy or girl. The sound of footsteps in the hallway broke Sarah from her stupor. She grabbed the container’s lid and slid it back into place. The locking mechanism clicked, and the dial that had released the lid started tightening on its own. Sarah scrambled to another stack of containers. She peeked out from behind in time to see the old man reappear at the door. The old man scuffled to his container at the center of the room, muttering under his breath. The old man knelt next to his container and turned the dial to release the lid. Sarah tried to make out what he was saying. “The sacrifice is ready,” she heard, and a shiver ran down her spine. The old man tenderly lifted the corpse and cradled it in his arm. Then he reached back into the container and pulled out a rifle of some sort. Damn, thought Sarah–if she had known that had been hiding under the body she could have grabbed it herself. The old man started walking back toward the door. Sarah crouched, getting ready to sneak after him, but a familiar sound stopped her cold. The high pitched bark was unmistakable–Bae had made the same sound on the planet during the sand-worm attack. Still hiding, Sarah desperately looked toward the old man. She could hear Bae, but cargo containers by the door obscured her view. All she could see was the old man from the waist up, as he pointed his rifle at the ground in front of him. “Filthy creature,” the old man said. The rifle fired before Sarah could react, and then there was silence. It felt like her heart had stopped in her chest. Sarah wanted to scream, but she had lost the ability to speak; she wanted to lunge at the old man–to turn him into a mangled corpse like the one cradled in his arm, but she had lost the ability to move. She could only watch, grief-stricken as the old man kicked something from his path, then walked out into the hall. Sarah’s mind was a jumble–whether seconds passed or minutes, she wasn’t sure. She thought of Bae, and her anguish gradually dissipated, leaving blind rage in its place. She never had a pet growing up–they were unheard of in the Nikola’s Children compound. She knew from the internet that keeping pets was something that other people did, but she never understood why–until Bae. The little rhino-pig was everything to her–had been her sole source of happiness since she woke up on the desert planet. And now Bae was gone. It pained Sarah to think of Bae’s little body–kicked aside like a piece of trash. She shielded her eyes as she ran to the door. She would return for Bae later. Now was not the time for mourning. Now was the time for one thing and one thing only–seared into every fiber of Sarah’s being: Revenge. The ship started trembling again as Sarah stormed after the old man. The light emitted by the strips along the walls seemed to dim as she went. She slowed when she heard the old man’s voice around a corner ahead. An image of the rifle aimed at her face flashed through Sarah’s mind–a head-on assault wouldn’t work. She needed to be careful. She needed to keep the element of surprise. The dim lights were flickering now, creating an eerie strobe effect as Sarah peeked around the corner. The old man had laid the child’s body on the ground. He clutched the rifle and chanted, waving his hands over the corpse. Sarah couldn’t hear his words over the deep rumble of the trembling ship. A control panel jutted from the wall behind the old man. Across the hall was a large sealed door with a long window. It looked like the door they had boarded the ship through–on the other side had been a decompression chamber and another door that opened to the ship’s exterior. Something was moving in there. It was a man, frantically banging his fists against the window. Doyle! The old man continued his ritual around the child’s corpse, ignoring Doyle. Sarah blinked. She thought her mind was playing tricks on her–it looked like the area around the dead child’s body had grown darker. The black aura seemed to swell outward as the old man chanted. It almost looked alive–like a shadowy mass of writhing black tentacles. The ship’s trembling intensified. The old man finally glanced toward Doyle, who still pounded at the door. The old man leaned his rifle against the wall, turning his back to Sarah to face the airlock’s control panel. Now was her chance! Sarah charged into the hallway and sprinted as fast as she could. The old man turned to face her, and grabbed for his rifle. But it was too late–Sarah barreled into the old man, sending him soaring down the hallway. The rifle clattered on the ground and slid out of the old man’s reach. Sarah regained her balance and turned to the airlock. Doyle stared out at her. Sarah turned to the control panel and slammed her fist down on a large red button near its center. The inner airlock door hissed and slid up into the ceiling. Doyle didn’t look so good. He clutched his stomach and winced. “What the fuck, Sarah!” Doyle said. “How did you know that button would open this door and not the other one?” Sarah looked at the control panel. She hadn’t noticed before that there was a large green button next to the red one she had pressed. She opened her mouth to say “oops,” but the butt of the old man’s rifle slamming into the back of her head interrupted her. She cried out and stumbled into Doyle. “You’re too late!” cried the old man. “The sacrament is complete! All that remains is the sacrifice!” The old man pointed his rifle at Sarah and Doyle and took a step forward. Sarah stepped back into the airlock. “Why are you doing this?” she shouted. The old man, still aiming the rifle, glanced back at the child’s body on the ground. “It was my fault,” the old man said. His demeanor changed–a profound sadness replaced the vitriol in his voice. He wept. “She was all I had, and it was my fault. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. This is the only way.” Sarah inched forward while the old man’s attention was on the child’s body. She stared at the rifle in his hands. Just a little closer and she could reach it. The old man spun to face Sarah. The sadness in his eyes vanished. “This is the only way,” he repeated. The venom had returned to his voice. “I have performed the sacrament of rebirth, now I offer the sacrifice. Blood for blood, a life taken for a life given!” Sarah saw the old man tighten his grip on the rifle. She shoved Doyle out of the way, then dove in the opposite direction. The blast passed between Sarah and Doyle, hitting the window on the door behind them–the one leading directly to the ship’s exterior. A crack formed across the window, and a creaking noise rang through the air. “Grab something!” Doyle shouted. Sarah scrambled toward the hallway and grabbed the edge of the inner doorway. The glass on the outer door shattered. A blast of air blew past and lifted Sarah’s body off the ground. Holding on for dear life, she looked up and saw the old man clutching the airlock control panel. His beard and the hood of his cloak flapped furiously in the rushing air. “Blood for blood!” the old man screamed over the howling wind. Then he let go of the control panel. Sarah watched aghast as the old man’s flailing body blew past, slammed into the outer door, then bent backwards at a horrifying angle as it squeezed through the shattered window and ejected into the cold vacuum of space. As Sarah watched the old man’s body tumble away from the ship, she felt something take hold of her arm. She looked and saw Desmond–at least, she thought it was Desmond. Blue luminescent lines covered his body, and he glowed with a shimmering light. His lower body had transformed into a dozen articulated spider-like legs. Desmond retrieved Doyle with one arm and pulled Sarah from the airlock with the other. Once they were both clear of the doorway, Desmond used one of his insect legs on the control panel, and the inner airlock door hissed shut. The gusting wind ceased, and silence descended upon the hallway. The blue lines on Desmond’s body and the light surrounding him faded away. His insect legs recombined into the humanoid legs Sarah was more familiar with, and what looked like a pair of cannons retracted back into his forearms. “I didn’t know you could do that!” Sarah said excitedly. “Dude, neither did I!” said Desmond. “Doyle did you see that? Did you know he could do that?” Doyle curled up into a fetal position and moaned. A familiar sound rang out from further down the hallway. Sarah perked up and spun around, hunting for the sound’s source. Could it be? But the old man had shot her! There at the end of the hallway, a large sooty stain on her side, stood Bae. The rhino-pig gave a honk, then started charging toward Sarah. Sarah felt like her heart was going to explode as she ran toward Bae. She scooped the little animal up in her arms and squeezed tight as she tumbled to the ground, laughing as Bae squealed with glee and licked her face. “Aw, look at that,” said Desmond. “Isn’t that cute?” “I think I shit myself,” moaned Doyle. Desmond sat at the mess hall table and stroked Bae in his lap. Despite a little charring, it seemed that the rhino-pig’s thick hide had absorbed most of the rifle’s shot. “So do you think you can do that blue glowy thing again? And those legs! Wow that was insane!” said Sarah. “I know right? But I can’t control it,” said Desmond. “It’s some kind of automated defense system.” “What triggered it?” asked Sarah. “Something that old man was doing?” “Nah,” said Desmond. He still didn’t know what the thing was that his body’s sensors had reacted to. “Something outside caused it. Whatever messed the ship up and made the lights go screwy also affected me.” Zuli entered the mess hall, carrying a covered tray in her arms. “Whatever that thing was, it weakened enough after the old man died that I was able to pull the ship away,” she said. She placed the tray on the table between Sarah and Doyle. “Did anyone see what happened to that gross corpse the old man had in his container?” asked Sarah. Doyle shrugged. “Probably blown out the airlock.” “I watched the old man go, but I didn’t see that,” said Sarah. “Did you see that?” “Where else could it have gone?” asked Desmond. He hadn’t seen the body when he arrived, after the old man had already died. “Anyway, what’s on the menu?” Doyle asked, staring suspiciously at the covered serving tray that Zuli brought. “Do not worry,” said Zuli. “The ship’s harvester drones processed a new food supply from the last planet they harvested. You will not have to eat food cubes again.” Doyle sighed with relief. “I’ll eat anything,” said Sarah. “I mean, anything is better than…” Zuli pulled the cover off the tray, revealing a steaming pile of baby sand-worms in a puddle of purple goo. Desmond looked down at Bae, who was squirming to get out of his arms. He lifted her onto the table. The little animal scampered to the pile of worms and started gobbling them down. Sarah calmly slid her chair away from the table, stood up, and turned away. “Where are you going?” asked Zuli. “To the airlock,” said Sarah. “There’s a big green button calling my name.”

Lines Levels States and Stages of Consciousness Paradigm Shifts, what are these? Oh, there are structures of consciousness? Whoah. Let's talk about these stages as it may help each one us understand the paradigm. Being aware is important, so to know our strengths and weaknesses. As soon as you discover your level, my friend, this will greatly help you.    “So here's one shoe. So I'm tying my shoe right now. I feel uncomfortable that my foot's in the square behind me so if this is your paradigm, and this is your reality, you're inside of this state. It could be that there's lines, levels, states, and stages of passion. There are different lines of consciousness.” - Keith Kalfas Topics Covered:   00:54 - Different levels of consciousness, what are those? How will you discover yours?    3:54 - Stages of consciousness, this depends on how you view these layers. It is up to you if you will put it in a positive perspective.    6:27 - How will this affect your life? It is up to you to turn everything into positive behaviors. It is you that holds the key.    11:22 - Move away from your comfort zone, it will not help if you keep on coming bad to your old habits. The main goal is to start new and level up your consciousness. Keep on practicing.    19:16 - Being open and having a clear conscious you get to see and think better. You became more responsible and accountable. You get to contribute more to the people around you.  Key Takeaways:    “What can happen is you can start to peer into these different states of consciousness. You go, Whoa, you're never the same. Oh my god,  you start to become integral in your consciousness. So instead of polarizing on one thing, you can extrapolate information based on one piece of data, you can start to see everything.”   “Because now when you do that you got to pick up the cross of responsibility and become accountable. And then you start to think and everything that you do is tied to a definite action as a reverberation quantified butterfly effect that echoes around the world until eternity and changes people's lives. Every single thing that you do and every thought that you think is affecting the greater whole of the world that we live in and everybody in it. So then you start to think oh my god, we are all one.”   Connect with Keith  Facebook Instagram  YouTube LinkedIn Website   Other Helpful links! I read a quote today in Heart of the Soul that said, “Perfectionism is leaking energy to a future that does not yet exist”. Whoah! Are you overthinking something right now and can’t seem to move forward? Today, I have a simple yet very powerful mindset mantra that will get you moving in the right direction.   I had a mind-blown experience this week. One of my online business mentors, Elizabeth Goddard, said, "Let Future You take care of it."   Whoah! So simple yet such a powerful mindset shift.   Here's what Elizabeth means: Have faith that Future You will have the experience and the context to make the right decisions.   So often we tie ourselves in knots about whether we should try this or that. Should I start a podcast? Should I move to Paris?   But Present You can't know the answers because you don't have the experience of trying yet.   The job of Present You is to try, experiment, and play. To take action on something now and let Future You decide if it's working, if you love it, or if you want to try something else.   Future You has more information and, therefore, more answers. Yes, Present You will help out Future You by putting in effort and doing the work. But save your worries and ‘what ifs’ for Future You to figure out.   The job for Present You is to make a decision and take the next step. *** Hello. Imagine for a moment that you're playing a board game. A game that requires some strategic thinking. Let's go for one of my favorites: the settlers of Catan. After having played that game a few times you pretty quickly understand how to play in order to win. So it's time to make things a bit more interesting. Let's add some expansion sets to the game (Catan has 4). Whoah, now with these expansions you suddenly have a ton more options to find a winning strategy. Yes, the game becomes more complex but also more rewarding. But what if you weren't playing Catan... What if you were designing solutions for the challenges we face these days? Wouldn't it be great if you also had expansion sets that gave you more options to come up with winning solutions? Well as it turns out service design does have an expansion set and it's called systems thinking. In this episode of the Show Tristan Schultz shares how systems thinking helps you to break free from our limiting over rationalised view of the world. And in that way opens up pathways to solutions which were never on your radar before. I learned a lot from this chat with Tristan and I'm really curious what your biggest takeaway will be! Having directed and produced such shows as Jack Ryan, Hunters, For All Mankind, Hell On Wheels, Legion, Waco, Goliath, and frankly too many others films and shows to count...Dennie Gordon is no stranger to working with giant crews on massive sets. Having also directed a feature film in China during the SARS outbreak, I think it’s safe to say that Dennie knows something about keeping her crew members safe despite the risks. And not more than 2 minutes into our interview, Dennie rolled the following grenade into the middle of the room: “I think the cameras are going to start rolling again when there’s a vaccine.” Whoah. So what does that mean for everyone who’s livelihoods depend on cameras rolling? On needing makeup and hair done, sets to be designed, built, and painted...lights to be set up, focused to be pulled, costumes to be purchased and fitted, and in the case of most of my listeners...footage that needs to be cut. What’s the plan if cameras don’t roll again until we have a vaccine? And are there alternatives? Will production flee to other states or other countries that are willing to take the risks? Are crew members going to have to choose between unemployment or signing death waivers? There are a lot of questions right now, and neither I nor Dennie promise to have the answers. But we do our best to discuss all of the various options out there so all of us can make more informed decisions about what comes next. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Despite the “when there’s a vaccine” grenade Dennie rolled into the room, she assures us the Industry is putting protocols in place to make sets as safe as possible. But we have a long road ahead. Why she thinks talk shows, game shows, stage studio events will come back much sooner. Location set pieces won’t come back for a while. The astonishing story of Dennie Gordon's experience working on a feature film in China DURING the SARS-COV2 outbreak. Insurance. Waivers. Liability… Who’s really going to take this on at the end of the day? What should we expect working on set to look like before a vaccine? How do we tell good stories while following physical distancing guidelines? How can creative professionals continue building their careers? After all, we never learn anything when we’re not working. How will we be able to collaborate at the same level as before? For example, if writer’s rooms are meeting on Zoom calls instead of in person, how much gets lost in the creative process? Why not create stories that reflect the reality we’re living in with COVID-19? Dennie’s thoughts on having everyone live on set as a closed community where everyone is tested. (Example: Tyler Perry who built a set on a former army barracks.) Does she think people will be willing to live in a quarantined set, isolated from family and friends for months just to have a job again? What about reality shows? Will they resume before scripted? People in some countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Czechoslovakia, Iceland, & South Korea have already started shooting. What opportunities does that present? How do you navigate production when one state says they’re not ready to start shooting because it’s unsafe and in the next state, they’re saying “We’re already making television, what are you guys doing over there?” Since it’s going to be more expensive for productions to operate and doing so with less people, and considering that so many people will want to work and do it for less money, what effect do you expect that downward pressure on wages to have and what would you hope to see? What are we going to do about post-production or are they in a good enough position with remote workflows? Can you still tell the same quality stories if you never meet your post-production crew in person? What does pilot season look like? Do we think the structure of the way we do the business side of things is going to change? What do you think is going to happen to television in general considering the expected reduction in the volume of shows that will be produced? What are some of the ideas you’ve come up with to pivot and be innovative when it looks like you may not be able to go back to directing for a year or two? Does it make sense for you to provide value in other ways such as mentorship? And what does mentorship and networking look like in the time of coronavirus? Dennie Gordon’s words of wisdom: “Use this time. When this is all over, people will be able to define themselves by how they used this time.” Why Dennie expects us to have to get much better at communicating their ideas to each other. Do you think we’ll end up going towards making features and not doing episodic T.V. for a long time because it’s just so hard to sustain the level of production T.V. requires? Can we expect a resurgence of small indie movies? Main Point of the Sermon: As the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus redeems the practice from burden to blessing. Intro For much of my life, people called me driven. Driven is a funny word. Because we think its a positive word. And it can be. But you have to ask yourself, what or who is driving you? For many years, I was driven by a sense of approval. I needed to be good enough. Talented enough. Funny enough. I needed to prove myself. So this inward sense drove me to work hard. Even after I became a Christian I was still driven to perform. Driven to be better than other Christians. Seeking approval from God and especially others. I was given an impression early on that there are “Good Christians.” And those who aren’t. I wanted to be good. For the last 10 years, God has been liberating me from my need to be good enough because Jesus was good enough for me. I am being liberated from my need to accomplish. I am slowly learning how to rest in Jesus’ life, death, and love for me. Do you struggle with feeling like you’re never doing enough? Measuring enough? Working enough? Holy enough? Maybe you’re sick and tired of not being good enough. Constantly under a burden and feel like God is unhappy with you. I have good news for you! Passages like the one we are looking at today are helpful. This is a hard text. But with some work, it really can be a liberator for many of us. › Before we jump in, we’re going to be looking at the context. ALWAYS! Then we will look at two different scenes occurring on the Sabbath. Context Luke 4:18–19 ESV 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” “Liberty to the oppressed” We have seen Jesus liberate people from demonic oppression, physical affliction, and cultural rejection over and over since his announcement in chapter 4. Now, we will see Jesus liberate those who were oppressed by what the Jewish leaders turned the law into. Jesus is giving an example of this new paradigm, the new covenant that Jesus introduced in our last passage regarding the wineskins and garments. The war is against legalism. But the battle in our Text today is about the Sabbath. The First Sabbath: Luke 6:1 Lk 6:1 “On a Sabbath”Let’s stop here and do a quick study on what the Sabbath is. The Sabbath is very foreign for those who are not familiar with the Bible and even for those who grew up in the Church can be deeply confused about it. What’s the Sabbath? Deut 5:12-14 12 “ ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… And then he lists every person and animal in a community. This was a radical law, unheard of in that time for God to call a whole nation to rest one day a week! This was not normal to give people a day of rest especially everyone: man, woman, child, servant, and animal. It was supposed to a blessing to the whole community! If we continue reading, Deuteronomy 5:15 ESV 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. The Sabbath is a weekly reminder of their liberation, they are no longer slaves and God, He had redeemed them! The Sabbath was a weekly, life-giving blessing that was simple to observe: Don’t work, instead, rest and remember. What the Sabbath Became If you want to jot down Ezekiel 20:12-13 we see that Israel ended up ignoring the Sabbath and perverting the original design. This was one of the significant reasons why they were exiled from their land. The Sabbath was such an important domino habit. I’ve talked about it before. Domino habits are those habits that when you do them well, they domino into many other habits and other blessings in your life. A weekly ceasing of work, to remember who they were, who God was, and what he had done was a game changer. If they lost that, then they would find themselves slipping in many other areas. The Jews, once returned to their land, knowing how important Sabbath was made a commitment to make sure they never mess up on it again. The Pharisees were one of the most influential groups in Israel and they believed that Israel was impure. Many believed if they followed God’s commands well enough, the Messiah would come and bring the kingdom! But instead of focusing on the heart, which is much harder, they focused on creating more rules around the law so that they wouldn’t even come near to breaking the law. They did something some call hedging. For example, let’s say you struggle avoiding porn, which is breaking a straight up commandment of not lusting. You could create an additional law to never use electronics. This would almost guarantee you would never look at porn. However, it wouldn’t address the heart. Then, in your zeal. you could condemn anyone who uses a computer because your man-made law was being violated. Hedging is not a problem, but imposing your hedge on others is. Thus, by the time Jesus steps into the scene, the Sabbath was no longer a blessing and was hardly recognizable. Here are some rules they created: • Fires could not be lit. • Fires could not be put out. • You could only walk a certain distance from your house. • You couldn’t take a bath because the water could flow off of you and wash the floor. • Women couldn’t look in a mirror or put on any jewelry. • If you were to find a white hair, you would have to wait till the Sabbath is over to pluck it out. • They had about 39 rules on the kind of work that was forbidden on the Sabbath. Sounds like a restful day, huh? Instead of being THE highlight of the week, they learned to dread it. It became like Monday's are to many workers. It was a duty not a delight. It wasn’t a weekly sign of their liberation but their slavery to traditions and cultural expectations. Eventually, these traditions became as important if not more important than the actual God-given law for many Jews. And based on how well you fulfilled the law gained a sense of social acceptance and for many, acceptance towards God. They made the rules more important than people and more important than God. They focused on outward appearances rather than the heart. › So now that we understand their context, back to our passage, Luke 6:1–2 ESV 1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” God commanded farmers to leave the edges of their fields unplowed so travelers and the poor could pluck some with their hands and eat (Deut 23:25). However, the stalker Pharisees have a problem with this because they’re doing this on the Sabbath. A sub-theme I will trace throughout this sermon is different characteristics of Pharisees. It’s important to take note since its something we all can struggle with in different ways. You might be a pharisee when you are stalking people to catch them doing something wrong! The Pharisees already dislike Jesus since he’s calling filthy tax collectors and traitors like Levi to follow him. There’s no way he can be the messiah! Notice what the Pharisee accuse them of doing? What is not LAWFUL! They didn’t say, “You know, some people say… or one teacher thinks.” They called it law! It was absolutely fine to walk through and eat grain. So why did the Pharisees think what they were doing was against the law? Scholar, Leon Morris helps us understand their issue: When the disciples picked some heads of grain, the Pharisees thought they were reaping. When they rubbed them in their hands to separate the wheat from the chaff, they considered this threshing and winnowing. And when they started to eat the grain, they were guilty of preparing food on the Sabbath. So with every mouthful, the disciples were violating the law four different ways. So the disciples were absolutely not breaking the sabbath but merely the pharisee’s traditions. You might be a pharisee when you elevate man-made traditions to the same level as the commands of God. › Jesus responds Jesus’ Response: Luke 6:3–5 Luke 6:3–4 ESV 3 And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” “Have you not read” is Jesus’ implicit rebuke that they have read it but they’re totally missed the point. The story is recorded in 1 Samuel 21:1–6, which you don’t have to turn to. So David is fleeing from King Saul as he’s a jealous mess and wants to kill David. David and his company are hungry so the priest gives him and his men the bread of the presence. However, this bread was only supposed to be eaten by the priests at the end of the week. These 12 loaves represented the 12 tribes of Israel and would be place on the altar in the house of God. At the end of the week, the bread would be replaced with fresh loaves. It seems like David’s arrival was on the Sabbath since the old loaves were available. On this one occasion, the high priest gave this special bread to David and his men to eat as they were fleeing from Saul. Although the priests were the only ones allowed to eat this bread, God never punishes David or his men for this act. Why was it ok since he wasn’t a priest? David and the priest understood the heart of God which was later expressed in Hosea 6:6. Hosea 6:6 ESV 6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. It seems like David’s understanding and Jesus’ point is that, at least in this case, the ceremonial law which stated only priests could eat the bread, bowed to the law of love in human survival. David understood the heart of the Sabbath was for the good of man. It was supposed to be a life-giving blessing. And his men were starving and in danger so they ate the bread. Jesus’ question has the Pharisees in a dilemma. • David was the hero king of all Israelites. • They wouldn’t dare charge David of sin. • And yet, David breaks a god-given law on the sabbath. Jesus is calling out their hypocrisy and their inconsistency. The logic of Jesus’ point is this: If David could be allowed by a priest to violate a God-given law on the Sabbath, then the disciples could certainly be allowed by the Son of Man to violate a man-made law on the Sabbath! (Inspired by John MacArthur) You might be a pharisee when you’re more concerned with following traditions than the good of other people. Jesus has been using the Old Testament to expose their legalism. But he does not merely use the OT as an outside authority to expose legalism, he points to his own authority! Luke 6:5 ESV 5 And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” Whoah! For those who knew the Scriptures, Jesus was making a huge claim here. He’s identifying himself as the Son of Man which he just did in the last chapter, Luke 5:24 ESV 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” So the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins! Pastor Ross unpacked Daniel 7 as the most significant Old Testament reference for the Son of Man but basically, the emphasis is that he’s a king and has all authority and all peoples will serve him forever. He’s explaining to all that who would have ears to hear, “I am God, the author of the Sabbath. Let me help you understand what the Sabbath is all about.” The Jews were longing for the Messiah to come, and yet, Jesus’ reference to 1 Samuel is dripping with connections that he is the son of David longed for: • Jesus is from the line of David. • David goes into the house of God. Jesus is ultimately the house of God. • Jesus is the high priest. • They eat the bread of the presence. Jesus is Immanuel, God with us and is the bread of life. • David takes the bread and passes it with those with him. • Jesus will do the same at the Last supper, foreshadowing his death. • David was betrayed by his father-in-law, Saul. • Jesus is betrayed by one of his friends. I’m the one you are searching for and yet they can’t see it or perhaps, don’t want to see it! You might be a pharisee when you love the rules more than the ruler! › Jesus is going to further reverse the Sabbath back to blessing from burden. Another Sabbath: Luke 6:6-7 Luke 6:6–7 ESV 6 On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. So this is a small enough town where everyone knew everyone. This man was known by all. And he had an issue with his right hand, which is a big deal. The Jewish tradition was that you could heal others on the Sabbath, only if it would save their life. This guy had this issue for a long time probably. And could go another day. The Pharisees are learning that Jesus cares about people and is able to heal. So they are looking for to catch Jesus in the wrong to accuse him. You might be a pharisee if you only care if someone is helped your way. Jesus has a big issue with their mindset. So he’s going to right at them. He doesn’t avoid the controversy and wait for the next day, lest they misunderstand him. He believes that the Pharisees’ legalism is hurting people so he’s going to go at them! Let me show you the heart of legalism. Turn to Luke 18. Jesus describes a Pharisee and a tax collector both going to the temple and their different attitudes. Luke 18:9 ESV 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: Legalism is one of the greatest enemies so Jesus is using their understanding of the Sabbath to expose and destroy it. Luke 6:8–10 ESV 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. So Jesus sets them up and exposes them. He asks them a question they can’t answer without contradicting themselves. They can’t say, “Do harm or destroy life.” So they stay quiet. He shows them the heart of the law. The Sabbath was supposed to be a blessing, not a burden. It wasn’t as much of what you CAN’T do but what you CAN do. It was supposed to be for the good of people. Which is one of the biggest misconceptions of our culture. Christianity is all about rules. God is the ultimate kill-joy. However, the Law is supposed to give life! There is good reason behind EVERYTHING God commands us to do. Our problem is that we naturally love the things that harm us and ultimately spiritually kill us! Jesus looks them down and calls the man to do what he cannot do, stretch out his hand. Marvel at the authority! No dance, no chanting, no hoping. Just commanded and the man is miraculously healed. Jesus’ healing is confirmation that his interpretation of the Sabbath and the new way of his kingdom is legit. The Pharisees’ response: 6:11 Luke 6:11 ESV 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. What is wrong with these guys? Instead of bowing in worship after seeing someone they knew delivered from a debilitating disability, they are filled with fury. Their power is threatened and their whole system and life is challenged. You might be a pharisee when you will do whatever you can to maintain your power and your beliefs. They don’t want the messiah. They want their power and their way! Sometimes we think, if only God would do a miracle, I would believe. This right here is evidence that’s not always true. In fact, many times throughout scripture, undeniable miracles are performed and people keep on in their disbelief and hard hearts. The text says literally, “They were filled with madness.” They begin their process of plotting his murder according to Matthew’s account. So apparently, you can’t heal and pick up grain on the Sabbath but you can begin to plot murder??? You might be a pharisee when you are filled with rage when people expose your hypocrisy. You also might be a pharisee when you are utterly inconsistent in your keeping of the law. How now shall we Live? Should we keep the Sabbath (Sidebar) A natural question you may be wondering is if Christians have to observe the Sabbath? Last April, I preached a whole sermon on Sabbath for the Christian titled: 24/6: A Way to a Vibrant Life I’m not going to give you the answer here because I won’t have the proper amount of time to unpack how we understand our relationship with the Old Testament law. If you didn’t hear it or need a refresher, please check it out this week. Good News for the Weary › The actual weekly practice of a Sabbath was not the main heart of this passage though. Jesus is waging war against legalism. Against perverting God’s good and holy law. Making God’s ways a burden, rather than a blessing. A way to earn, rather than a way to live. The specific battle in our Text today was the Sabbath. So let’s go back to the heart of what Jesus is trying to accomplish. Are you tired of not being holy enough, not loving people enough, not killing sin enough, no reading enough? Or perhaps: not working enough, not earning enough, not accomplishing enough, not advancing enough, not traveling enough, not experiencing enough? And even if you do enough, work enough, and accomplish enough, it’s never enough. There’s always tomorrow. You’re never satisfied, there’s always more work to do then there’s time in the day. Jesus has good news for us! Jesus wants to set free those who are bondage to sin. And also those who are in bondage of always trying to be good enough. We have all failed at to keep the God’s law. The most basic law of loving him with all of our being. The law requires that we die for that failure. But Jesus has come to perfectly fulfill the law. But Jesus died for our sins and took our punishment he cried out, IT IS FINISHED!!! So the Law says, “DO” but Christ says, “Done!” So Jesus finished the work we could never accomplish so now we can rest in him. It’s like if you go to work on Monday after totally screwing up the previous week, and you expect the boss to tear you to shreds. Instead, she says, “You can go home. Someone else did all your work for you this week. In fact that they did it much better than you could ever do it. And they want you to have the paycheck plus a bonus. Enjoy the week off!” Except in our case, it’s a life-time. And it’s spiritual. Jesus lived the life we should have lived and so now we are counted as if we lived the life he did! For unbelievers Maybe you say, “I will come to Jesus but I need to clean my act up a little first.” You will never be clean enough unless you simply come in your mess and let Jesus wash you. Jesus was clean so that we who are unclean might be clean. We don’t need to work our way to God, for Jesus already worked on our behalf! And when we trust him, he puts his spirit in us and performs powerful works through us! Our works don’t earn his love or acceptance, they flow from his love and acceptance. So turn from your control, your attempts of being good enough, and put your trust and allegiance in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. For Christians You may need to repent for pushing your man-made laws onto others. Condemning them. Judging them. Putting your preferences and personal convictions as equal to or greater than God’s law. Maybe you need to lay down your works again and freshly put your trust in Christ’s work for you. Perhaps you’re a follower of Jesus but you have subtly fallen into the trap of trying to earn your approval again. Pray enough. Read enough. Do good enough. You feel a persistent anxiety and sense God is not pleased with you. Lay it down and receive the Father’s love through the perfect work of his Son. Amen! Benediction and Commission? Matthew 11:28–30 NLT 28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Intro Please grab a physical bible if possible. A few weeks ago I preached a sermon on Jesus’ authority over every unconquerable and untamable sphere in life. And I tried to make the point that unlike politicians of our day that over-promise and under-deliver, Jesus never ever does so. He has the power and character to fulfill every promise he makes and even beyond our imagination. In our text today, we will see this further demonstrated. But today, we’re not focusing as much on his authority and his power but the kind of people that he pursues for his kingdom. Outline Here’s where we’re heading in our time together: • Context of Jesus’ Mission • Jesus pursues Levi • Levi leaves everything and follows Jesus • Religious leaders have a problem with Jesus’ pursuit of sinners • How we should live? Context: › Before we get to chapter 5 v. 27, look at a few chapters before. Look at some of the headings in your Bible. Remember that in Jesus’ announcement he announces that his kingdom will care for the poor, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed. • Jesus heals a man with an unclean demons • Jesus heals many • Jesus calls his first disciples (Who were nobody fishermen) • Jesus cleanses a leper • Jesus heals a paralytic Jesus is not moving towards the rich, the powerful, and the attractive. But rather, he’s moving towards the poor, pitiful, the outcast, the unclean, the rejected. All the kinds of people that every society ignores. So now let’s look at the calling of Levi or also known as, Matthew. The Calling of Levi Luke 5:27 ESV 27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” First of all, let me direct you that the actions of Jesus were not random but intentional. This language, “went out and saw” is more purposeful. In other words, “He’s seeking out Levi.” Let me remind you what tax collectors were like in that time. Most people hate the IRS but the kind of playful hatred we have for them is nothing like Jesus’ time. 1. They would often take extra money off the top. You see John the Baptist call this out, Luke 3:12–13 ESV 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” So we see right in the Text, that they had a reputation for theft. 2. But even more, they were looked upon as national traitors. For many Jews, freedom from Rome was everything to them. Let’s get the stinking gentiles out of our land. And yet, tax collectors worked for the enemy. They helped the enemy oppress their fellow people and got rich while doing it. So to bring this home, if our country was taken over by another nation. And that nation needed local Americans to collect exorbitant taxes for them, and I volunteered. And all the while, you knew I charged you more than I needed to and got rich while doing it. How would you feel about me? The Jew’s hatred was understandable... In chapter 5, we see Jesus call the first disciples. I can imagine Jesus going up to Levi, the tax collector and Peter is watching and tapping the other disciples and saying, “Check this out. Jesus is going to give it to that traitor!” Only to have his jaw hit the ground when Jesus says, “Follow me.” Whoah, Jesus. Maybe extend mercy by greeting him or maybe even forgiveness to him but join our band of followers? Jesus was extending mercy and fellowship with an enemy of Israel! Think about it, if you were to start a worldwide revolution and were recruiting your core team, who would you target? A despised traitor that everyone hated? Jesus’ pursuit is the opposite of our expectations. Let’s see Levi’s response, Luke 5:28 ESV 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. Let’s look at this phrase carefully. My sense is that this phrase right here is a reflection of spiritual death and rebirth. 1. So he leaves everything which is like a death. 2. He rises up. This is the same word for resurrection. Anisteimi 3. And then, follows Jesus (which is life) So Levi is physically demonstrating something that has happened spiritually on the inside. And please remember, being a christian is being a follower of Jesus. And following Jesus means you are doing the following and Jesus is doing the leading. Not that you are doing the leading and he follows you around like some cosmic genie and you ask him to bless your ideas and leadership. So if you are following Jesus, people should be able to tell that you get your orders from another. This is the basic framework for all Christians. Dying to all that we hold dear. All that we find security in. All that we look to for life. All that we look to for purpose. We leave it all behind and follow Jesus and experience resurrection life now and in the age to come. The Text says, “Leaving everything.” Everything here does not mean all possessions because the very next verse what do we see Levi doing? He’s hosting a huge feast, so he still has money and a home. But if you skip forward to v. 32 Jesus clarifies he’s calling Levi to a spiritual abandonment that will often have a physical element to it. Even though Levi may have held onto his possessions, no longer consider them his but Jesus’. This means they would be at the disposal of Jesus for his mission. And we see later on that he does this very thing. So Levi is leaving his corrupt job but more importantly, he’s leaving his own control. And in great joy, he hosts a great feast at his house in honor of Jesus. › › Let’s look at this feast, The Scandalous Feast Luke 5:29 ESV 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. This Text suggests to me that Levi’s only friends were other tax collector and rejects. Rejects in society tend to connect with each other. He has given his life to follow Jesus and now he wants all of his fellow sinner friends to meet Jesus too! To meet the one that cares for rejects like himself. This was probably a crowd of people that Jesus would normally not be able to reach with his teaching at the synagogues for these people would have been excommunicated. The statement Jesus is making by attending this feast cannot be overstated. Listen to this from Dr. Scott Bartchy, ‌It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of table fellowship for the cultures of the Mediterranean basin in the first century of our era. Mealtimes were far more than occasions for individuals to consume nourishment. Being welcomed at a table for the purpose of eating food with another person had become a ceremony richly symbolic of friendship, intimacy and unity. In v. 30, we see the Pharisees have big issue with Jesus doing this. If we piece together all this historical context, it makes sense. Jesus was having table fellowship with traitors! Friendship, intimacy, and unity to them! PAUSE Let me ask, What kind of picture do you have in your mind of Jesus here? What is he like? Is he frowning at everyone? Making sure anyone who watches knows he does not condone their lifestyle? PAUSE If we keep reading in Luke we see that this was not an isolated event, Jesus became known for doing this, Luke 7:34 ESV 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Luke 15:1–2 ESV 1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” My sense from these passages and more is that Jesus smiled at them. He was warm. He laughed hard. He was able to see their brokenness and sinfulness, but also see that they still were made in the image of God. For the first time in many years, someone looked at them, truly. My Jesus filled that room with warmth and life. › It seems like the scene changes and later on the Pharisees are speaking to Jesus’ disciples, Luke 5:30 ESV 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” The Great Physician Jesus’ hears about their grumbling and responds and gives us one of his purpose statements in Luke, Luke 5:31–32 ESV 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” The logic is very simple, a child can understand. A doctor must spend time with the sick, not the healthy. With this pandemic going on, it would be insanity if all the doctors flew to the areas where there was no infection. Jesus is using this obvious logic. Since he’s the great physician, his pursuit and focus are those who are sickest. In saying this, Jesus is not affirming that the Pharisees were righteous. But Jesus is playing by the categories of the Pharisees since they consider all of Jesus’ new friends as sinners. The Pharisees didn’t think they were sinners. Didn’t think they needed Jesus. We see the heart of many Pharisees exposed, Luke 18:9–12 ESV 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ So the church is not made up of the righteous, it’s made up of repentant sinners. It’s not made up of those who think they’re good, it’s made up of people who know they’re not. It’s not made up of people who are righteous enough for God to accept them, it’s made up of people who are accepted because Jesus’ righteousness has come down and covered them! The paradox is that those that society considered outside the bounds of salvation or even friendship were the very people Jesus came for. What does this mean that he calls sinners to repentance? This word, repent is one we have highlighted before but worth revisiting because we all can easily forget what we’re saying. When we repent, we’re not merely saying we’re sorry. Or admitting we did something wrong. The word, μετανοέω The root word of it is, νοέω It’s the Greek word that means, your understanding, thinking, perception. Meta compounded means change or turning. So that means your understanding, thinking, perception has changed. It’s turned directions. So when we repent to God we are expressing to him that we are fundamentally changing our mind about our own control. We are humbling ourselves and admitting we are wrong and believing God’s way is the best way. And when you change the way you think, it changes the way you live! So Levi and his friends are being called to radically change their thinking about everything, especially God. They are called to reject their own control. Their very purpose for living. Their values. Their desires. A radical reorientation of theirselves, the world, and God. You may have repented once before on some specific day, Christian? But are you still repenting today? Repentance is not a single event only. It’s a daily, moment by moment heart posture. Are you continually declaring your wrongness and Jesus’ rightness. And asking him to radically change the way you think about everything? Gospel Call For those who need to come to the great physician for the first or the millionth time, The British preacher, Charles Spurgeon made these observations with some edits in the 1800’s: What is his medicine? It his own blood. Unlike other physicians, who give bitter potions to their patients, the great Physician drank all the medicine himself. But you will ask, “What is his fee?” He gives healing “without money and without price.” Who can access this medicine? Anyone who trusts him, Christ presents a free and complete cure. And you will ask, “What are his hours?” Any hour, and every hour, by night or by day. But you will say, “Where can I find him?” Just wherever you are sitting or standing now, you can find him if you will but breathe this prayer, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” If you trust him with your soul, Jesus will cure you. This is the great hope for us sinners. Christ Jesus is the great physician who drinks our spiritual sickness so that he can offer the cure to anyone who will have him. How should we now live? Two responses: 1. Seek after the Sick What Jesus has done to us, he wants to now do through us. As those who have received the great cure to the soul, we ought to seek after the sick and introduce them to the great physician. Two ditches I must warn you about: The Ditch of Compromise On one side of the ditch you have Christians who have embraced the call to reach the lost by going to them. But they have done so in such a manner that they are not salt anymore but have lost their saltiness. Instead of influencing the world, they’ve become like the world. Furthermore, they never preach the gospel. They may alleviate temporary suffering but have neglected eternal suffering. I’ve seen this happen a lot over the years with many dear friends. And I too went through a season doing the same. The Ditch of Avoidance On the other side, you have Christians that are rightfully fearful of compromising and becoming corrupted by the world. But then, they wrongly respond by avoiding the world completely and isolating themselves in Christian bubbles. They forget they are sent into the world like Jesus was. They my lob gospel grenades at sinners without ever sharing a table or actually befriending sinners. They go out and preach and then go home and check off the box. They will never ever be accused of being a friend of sinners. OR PROBABLY for many of you, you want to love the lost but due the busyness of life, you just find yourself essentially not in relationship with the sick. Jesus’ purpose in v. 31-32 is very relevant for us in our circles who have access to so much theological knowledge. Some of you are like doctors who have received the best training in the world and yet, instead of spending time helping the sick, you just hang out with other doctors. You’re like doctors during this pandemic who are just spending time with other doctors, filling your days just talking about the newest procedures on how to help the sick without every helping the sick. Criticizing other doctors who are on the field and not doing it quite right. You’re reading doctor blogs and tweeting about doctors stuff. You’re always learning more but rarely using it for their good. On the contrary, Jesus seeks Levi out. He gets his hands dirty. He pursues him. This is a common pattern in Jesus’ ministry. He will often pursue and go where the sinners are. And ultimately, that’s what Jesus does in his incarnation. He is sent by the father and leaves the privilege and purity of heaven and enters our brokenness and filth. This is one of the reasons why we included the phrase, “Especially those far from God” in our mission statement. We didn’t want to forget the emphasis of Jesus’ ministry and the easiest people to neglect. This is important point for us to consider. Who are you seeking out that is sick and rejected? If you are committed to seeking the sick, allow me to make one implication and one challenge: 1 Implication: Your inner pharisee will be exposed and you will grow deeper into the gospel Your inner Pharisee will be exposed. Loving the lost regularly will undoubtably expose you to great heartache, disappointment, and even betrayal. What this will do is test your belief in the Gospel. It will give you a glimpse of how insufferable we were to God. It will cost you to enter into the fellowship of his suffering. And rejoice in the gospel much more deeply. Loving the Lord doesn't always automatically result in seeking the sick but loving the Lord and knowing the gospel will sustain you in seeking the sick. 1 Challenge Pray and Pick a Person Who is someone in your life that you can specifically to seek after? Is there someone you know that is rejected and the most unlikely to become a Christian? Who is completely alone and feeling isolated that you can reach out and bring hope to them now and even more so, eternal hope? Get creative by the Spirit, and enlist your DNA and MC to help support you in this pursuit. › Second response and I conclude on this. 2. Rejoice in the Great Physician Aren’t you glad Jesus came for the sick? That he came for sinners? Aren’t you glad Jesus doesn’t say, I have not come for the sick but for the healthy! The attractive. The pure. The competent. Praise God he comes for the sick, like me and like you. And since he did, let’s go find those who need healing also! __ Response

__ Response
