Dan & Manny welcome Prof. Matt Landis to teach them all about the 90s Swing revival. “ Anytime a musical movement is chasing authenticity you can almost guarantee they're going to be bullshit ” -Matt Landis Matt takes Dan & Manny on a deep journey that includes the beginnings of Swing music in the 30s, to the historic events of The Zoot Suit Riots, he explains the core of what it means to be Punk, the impetus of the 90s Swing Revival, and it's absolute failings. Through it all, Matt also tells some amazing stories of his time in the Brooklyn-based cabaret-punk collective The World/Inferno Friendship Society, which honesty can be a whole other episode. At the end, Dan & Manny ask the pivotal question, "How do you rank the Rocky movies." Big thanks to Matt for coming on and truly making this one of the best Nostalgia 101 episodes. 2024 is here and this is a very special episode #30 of Pierre Pressure Podcast. This is a re-broadcast of an interview Pierre did with Gordon Gano, lead singer and guitarist of the Violent Femmes, along with then-drummer Brian Viglione (drummer of Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, World Inferno Friendship Society) on East Village Radio, hosted by Michael Messenie, AKA the Coach, on his Two For Tennis Show. This interview took place in September of 2013 in a tiny studio in the East Village in New York City. Pierre was thrilled to be asked to co-interview Gordon and Brian of the Violent Femmes on the occasion of their upcoming show at Summer Stage, re-starting an era of touring and recording for the band. The Violent Femmes were a hugely influential part of 1980's culture, starting with their massive hit “Blister in the Sun” in 1983 and continuing to this day. Their music was life-changing for Pierre and kicked-started his journey as a guitarist and songwriter.https://vfemmes.com/https://www.brian-viglione.com/biohttps://www.evr2.com/Theme song; Marchandise by Pierre de Gaillande, from the album franglais. Well, this is it: the Season 2 finale! What could be better than having a great novelist AND musician as my last guest for the summer. Enter Franz Nicolay. Franz is here to talk about his rock novel ‘Someone Should Pay For Your Pain', a story that follows singer-songwriter Rudy, his conflicted relationship with a successful former protégé named Ryan, and Rudy's young niece, Lily, who wants to travel with him and whose surprise appearance forces a reckoning with himself and his past. ‘Buzzfeed' named it one of its “42 Great Books To Read” for spring 2021, stating, “Starting at the midlife crisis of an early-aughts indie rock never-was, Franz Nicolay delivers a tight-fisted gut punch of a novel, weaving a road-weary world with a lyricist's skill for evocation, emotion, and economy. . . . A knockout fiction debut from a longtime troubadour.” In addition to records under his own name, Franz Nicolay was a member of cabaret-punk orchestra World Inferno Friendship Society and is still a member of The Hold Steady, which ‘Rolling Stone' magazine called “one of the all-time great New York bands.” Franz has also recorded or performed with dozens of other acts. His first book, the nonfiction ‘The Humorless Ladies of Border Control', was named a “Season's Best Travel Book” by ‘The New York Times'. His second book, the novel ‘Someone Should Pay For Your Pain', was named one of ‘Rolling Stone's “Best Music Books of 2021.” His writing has appeared in ‘The New York Times', ‘Slate', ‘The Paris Review Daily', ‘The Kenyon Review Online', ‘Ploughshares', the ‘Los Angeles Review of Books', ‘Threepenny Review', and elsewhere. He has taught at UC–Berkeley and is currently a faculty member in music and written arts at Bard College and in Columbia University's MFA fiction program. World/Inferno Friendship Society was not a ska band. However, their punk cabaret sound was similar in spirit and they played with a fair amount of ska bands. They even toured with Blue Meanies and The Independents. Accordion/Keyboardist Franz Nicolay WAS a ska fan. When he moved to New York in the 90s, he saw many brilliant ska shows at The Wetlands. Later when joined indie rock group The Hold Steady, and continued to love the music wholeheartedly. Today, we talk to punk rock's number-one accordionist, Franz Nicolay. He explains why he once sent In Defense of Ska a message to inform us that he NEVER renounced ska. He tells us about discovering ska in the 90s and seeing many Moon Ska bands perform in New York. He also tells us many unhinged World/Inferno stories from the road. And he tells us what the other members of The Hold Steady REALLY think about ska! We also discuss Franz's excellent novel, Someone Should Pay For Your Pain, and he tells us why he often thinks about the unglamorous side of being a touring musician. Support the show

Franz Nicolay has maybe the longest and most varied resume of any Left of the Dial guest. You likely know him best from his work with The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society, and of course, his own solo work. He's also a novelist, travel writer, journalist, professor, and just an all around brilliant and thoughtful person. This week, he joins Andrea and our on-call substitute co-host Doug Keller to talk about so many things, including the long and winding process of making an album, writing fake songs for books, the art of the bridge, the necessity of revision, crying over Randy Newman, and, of course, Stephen Sondheim. He's also here to talk about his beautiful new album, New River, out today, (Nov 11th) on Don Giovanni Records (digital or vinyl).Catch Franz live this month:Nov 18 - Bar Freda, Queens NYNov 19 - Quarry House Tavern, Silver Spring MDNov 30 - Brooklyn Bowl, NYCFollow Franz Nicolay on Twitter and InstagramMentioned in this episode:"Where Is My Wandering Boy Tonight"Endless Possibility: A Tribute to Jack TerriclothFollow us on Twitter and Instagram.photo: Tim Davis
When drummer Ara Babajian joined The Slackers in 2003, Vic Ruggiero and David Hillyard had to teach him how to correctly play a traditional ska beat, which they did by handing him key records to listen to, and by singing ska beats at him. Ara wasn't new to ska. He'd played in several bands like Agent 99 and Leftover Crack. But The Slackers approached ska with a greater emphasis on hitting that Jamaican groove just right, so he had to up his game. He may have come to the band with little experience playing trad ska, but he's since proven himself to be a top-tier ska drummer. On today's episode we talk with Ara about his history in The Slackers, Agent 99, and Leftover Crack--the first time he left the group, he did so three songs into a show in Toronto in 2001, upset that Scott Sturgeon was on-stage making 9-11 jokes. We learn all sorts of interesting facts about Ara's life, like who played drums in Agent 99 before he joined the group (Hint: He played Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars). He also tells us stories about Leftover Crack's late bassist Alec Baillie, the time Bomb the Music Industry opened for The Slackers in Chicago and were booed by the audience (Jeff Rosenstock, apparently, was delighted by the reaction), what it's been like for The Slackers in recent years to get coverage in Rolling Stone Magazine and Washington Post (An article by IDOS guest Jessica Lipsky). And we learn about his 1980s group Das Booty, whose demo recordings were mistaken for Red Hot Chili Peppers demos for the Uplift Mofo Party Plan record. We are very excited to announce that ASOBAP is jumping on the hype: we are selling you JPEGs of Brienne for ten million dollars worth of fake crypto money each! This is not a scam! Other suggested talking points: a sword to kill Sansa, how fun it is to use hot wax, getting a castle where 9/11 happened, fisting a horn and the dichotomy between being horny and being normal. Franz Nicolay has had a long and winding and frankly vaudevillian journey through the music industry over the two-plus decades since he left our shared home state of New Hampshire. Dying Scene readers from the days of yore no doubt are familiar with the #1 accordion player in punk rock (it's true, Connor checked: https://dyingscene.com/heroes-of-the-punk-accordion-a-tribute-to-squeezebox-rockers/) through solo work or his stints in The Hold Steady and The World/Inferno Friendship Society and Against Me! and perhaps Anti-Social Music and maybe Guignol and probably from collaborations with countless beloved acts like Jeff Rosenstock and The Loved Ones and Frank Turner and Junior Battles and more. A few years ago, he published a fascinating nonfiction book, "The Humourless Laties of Border Control: Touring The Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar." It's an incredibly detailed and dense look at DIY touring through large chucks of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia and the like. At long last, Nicolay is set to release his debut novel. It's called "Someone Should Pay For Your Pain," and it's finally due out next week (August 24th) through Gibson Press, and let me tell you: it's wonderful. It centers around a character named Rudy Pauver. Originally from Wisconsin, Pauver finds his way to the DIY punk mecca that was late 90s Gainesville and joins a band and, when they goes belly up for a variety of reasons, he continues to ply his wares as a solo artist/troubadour for the better part of the next two decades. There is a cast of characters that includes former bandmates and former proteges-turned-megastars and crotchedy bartenders and condescending soundguys and a next-generation punk rock niece. If you've been in a band or been even loosely tied to a scene, you know these people and these places and these roads and these dive bar floor tiles and these mattresses in the corner at the local flophouse. It's real and it's relatable and it's a sort of book about what happens after the "coming of age" stuff gets old. For a musician who dabbles in writing - Franz can craft a hell of a novel. While recording an episode for the Alternative Tentacles bATcast, at the AT headquarters I was able to talk to the infamous members of The World/Inferno Friendship Society about their first, best, and worst shows of all time. It's a short one, but a sweet one. Check out episode 156 of the Alternative Tentacles bATcast that went up on February 14, 2020 for the rest of the conversation.
The Brooklyn-based collective The World/Inferno Friendship Society is a righteous gumbo of dark cabaret, which might touch on punk, ska, blues, rockenroll, klezmer, gospel, and jazz. With catchy tunes, and pizzazz-filled energy, World/Inferno pushes the limits of what could possibly be perceived as punk rock. Their brand-new record is hot off the presses, All Borders Are Porous To Cats, and it brings the band to make some mischief, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Watch the live session here:
TJ stops by again in episode 3 to discuss Ian MacKaye's newish band, whether or not your should recline your seat on an airplane, and the bizarre radio signal from space. Afterwards, we get to talk to Jack from World / Inferno Friendship Society about the infamous New Jersey basement scene, doing drugs, whether or not we should legalize cannibalism, and their new album "All Borders Are Porous To Cats" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
2/14/20: The World/Inferno Friendship Society stop in at the Batcave while on their tour supporting their brand new album, "All Borders Are Porous To Cats"! Pour yourself a glass of wine, put your feet up, and hear about what it's like to play the new songs, life on the road, and if there is a used condom on the floor of the Batcave or not.
12/31/19: For the final bATcast of 2019, Dominic, Just Chris, Nadine, Totally Amber, and Anne-Marie get together to discuss the recent Alternative Tentacles Fest and quite literally how to survive modern politics. From Trump antics to vile online hatred, how do you continue engaging when everything feels so bleak? Also everything from White Claws, Star Wars, Boob reductions, and a brand new track by The World/Inferno Friendship Society! Don't miss this one!
5/19/19 - Nadine and Dominic talk about the latest news from Alternative Tentacles while spinning tracks from The Darts, ArnoCorps, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, and Dead Ending! www.alternativetentacles.com

I've had the pleasure of sharing stages and recording sessions over the years with Ken and he always amazes. We chit-chatted about his career as a hornist, perceptions of Americans touring abroad, adapting feedback and screaming for marching band, making couscous with your bandmates, and so much more. Episode sponsor: Kapitalizum. Opening music: "Merchandise" written by Fugazi, performed by Pierre de Gaillande with James Fletcher, drums. Thanks for checking in. We’re back with a brand new show featuring everyone’s favorite mustachioed musician, Franz Nicolay.
