"We as believers in Jesus Christ actually know Him. It's our greatest asset as Christians. We see this in this New Covenant in which live. "... And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. ..." Hebrews 8:10-12 * Do we have to please God or do we want to please God? * How do you share who you are in Christ now? * Please explain Hebrews 6:4-6.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 700 (in 'Symbols of the Holy Spirit') - The finger. "It is by the finger of God that [Jesus] cast out demons." If God's law was written on tablets of stone "by the finger of God," then the "letter from Christ" entrusted to the care of the apostles, is written "with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts." The hymn Veni Creator Spiritus invokes the Holy Spirit as the "finger of the Father's right hand." - 385 (in 'The Fall') - God is infinitely good and all his works are good. Yet no one can escape the experience of suffering or the evils in nature which seem to be linked to the limitations proper to creatures: and above all to the question of moral evil. Where does evil come from? "I sought whence evil comes and there was no solution", said St. Augustine, and his own painful quest would only be resolved by his conversion to the living God. For "the mystery of lawlessness" is clarified only in the light of the "mystery of our religion". The revelation of divine love in Christ manifested at the same time the extent of evil and the superabundance of grace. We must therefore approach the question of the origin of evil by fixing the eyes of our faith on him who alone is its conqueror. Got a Bible question? What the Hebrews author is suggesting regarding the new covenant in Christ is not all that new. Jeremiah anticipated a new covenant, rendering the covenant old. The New and Living Way | Episode 20 | Hebrews 8:7-13 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then would no place have been sought for a second. For finding fault with them, he saith, "Behold, the days come," saith the Lord, "that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand to lead them forth out of the land of Egypt; For they continued not in my covenant, And I regarded them not," saith the Lord. "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days," saith the Lord; "I will put my laws into their mind, And on their heart also will I write them: And I will be to them a God, And they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his fellow-citizen, And every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord': For all shall know me, From the least to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And their sins will I remember no more. In that he saith, "A new covenant," he hath made the first old. But that which is becoming old and waxeth aged is nigh unto vanishing away.

"A disciple of Patriarch Niphon at the time that the latter was labouring in the asceticism of silence at Vatopedi, Macarius longed for martyrdom for the sake of Christ, and begged St Niphon's blessing to seek it. The discerning Patriarch, perceiving that this was God's will, blessed him for the way of martyrdom. Macarius went to Salonica and, in the midst of a crowd of Turks, began to speak of Christ as the one, true God. The Turks seized him and threw him into prison. When he was brought to trial, Macarius cried out to the Turks: 'Oh, that you would come to know the truth and be baptised in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!' The Turks beheaded him in 1527. At that moment, Niphon saw this in his spirit at Vatopedi, and told a monk of Macarius's death by martyrdom, saying: 'Know, my child, that your brother Macarius has today died a martyr, and is borne to heaven, triumphing and rejoicing in the Lord. May we be worthy of blessing by his prayers!' (From the Athonite Patrology)." (Prologue)

'Words of Life' w/ Pastor Mark D. Ingram

In this week's edition of 'Words of Life'...COVID-19: an acute 'pandemic' (issue/disease affecting a wide variety of populations) causing varying feelings of restriction, constraint, limitation, and/or confinement.Scripture in Context...Apostle Paul addresses (with concern) a young congregation about the importance of a proper mindset amidst the varied, tempting surroundings in which he planted this Colossian church. Seemingly infected with varying heresies and religious rituals which were not required or requested, Paul encourages them that they mustn't bind themselves to such when JESUS had procured their release with HIS atoning sacrifice. The young church was guilty of perpetuating an 'institutionalized' mindset, choosing to remain within the symbolic doors of religious 'lockdown', although an open door (JESUS) invited their active steps towards liberty and freedom.Just as Paul challenged and encouraged this young congregation @ Colosse, the challenge for us this week remains...'Have 'you' identified that which causes 'you' to struggle, fail or even remain restricted (limited) by, in regards to the spiritual maturity or progression GOD expects from each of us?'Everyone - and I do mean EVERYONE... has 'tendencies.'Know thyself - GOD does.'RELEASED'Primary Text: Colossians 1:13-14Song of the Week: 'Faith Is' featuring Alex J.P.S. - Not enough time to watch the video broadcast?Simply download (free) the podcast edition or watch any episode from Seasons 1, 2 or 3 anywhere digital downloads are available. https://www.youtube.com/user/WordsofLifeCC/playlists

Sandra McCracken and Russ Ramsey led a breakout session as part of The Gospel Coalition’s 2019 National Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, entitled Reading Scripture with an Engaged Imagination. The songwriter and author, respectively, discussed the role the imagination plays in reading, understanding, and conveying the content of Scripture. Even for individuals with a high view of Scripture, who believe the Bible is authoritative and reliable, Ramsey and McCracken argue that reading it well requires a fully engaged imagination—not because it is lacking in any way, but because that’s what our humanity demands. They discussed how, in prose and songwriting, they mine the detail of Scripture and use their imaginations to faithfully flesh out its context and significance. In doing so, they encourage others to engage Scripture in the same manner no matter their specific vocations. This episode of The Gospel Coalition podcast is sponsored by The Good Book Company, publisher of 'Need to Know', a book by Gary Millar. Co-founder of Let's Fix Construction, Eric D. Lussier returns to the mic to host the first episode since September of 2018. Eric eases back into the podcast by reminding the listeners how steeped in the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) that Let's Fix Construction ends up being. Eric attended CONSTRUCT, CSI's National Conference, Annual Meeting and affiliated tradeshow in Philadelphia in 2010. Thanks to the Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter of CSI, Eric got to attend his first full conference of CONSTRUCT in 2011 in Chicago and then went on to return in Phoenix in 2012, Nashville in 2013, Baltimore in 2014, St. Louis in 2015, Austin in 2016, Providence in 2017 and Long Beach, CA in 2018. 2019 will find CONSTRUCT at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor, MD on Wednesday, October 9th through Friday the 11th. The Education Advisory Council, that Eric has been a member of for three years now, had a chance to meet in National Harbor in November of 2018 and preview the host resort and start planning the 2019 conference. As a building product representative, Eric implored the need to have a dedicated track for product reps. Through original programming and submitted education through the RFP process, Eric helped curate six sessions on Wednesday, October 9th and it is called Product Rep University. Whether new or heavily experienced, the Product Rep University has been developed to help you learn and do your job better as a construction product representative. Session one is hosted by Mitch Miller, and is titled 'Discipline Roles & Project Goals: How Do I Fit In?' The goal is for attendees to define and recognize the primary roles of the project team, which includes the Owner, Architect, Contractor, Consultants and Product Representatives. Session two is co-hosted by former President of CSI, Casey Robb, and is called 'Welcome to the “Vendor” Jungle! – Moving from Vendor to Trusted Resource'. Two of the goals of this session include recognizing the perceptions, limitations and real value clients expect in trusted relationships and how to develop a plan to move from “vendor” to “trusted resource” and gain credibility in the eyes of the client and the industry. The third session has been touched on both in the podcast and on the Let's Fix Construction blog and is called 'Why You Need to Read Division 01 on Your Projects: The Rules of the Game', presented by Anne Whitacre, Senior Specification Writer at HOK. One of the primary learning objectives is to recognize how the various types of contract documents interlock with each other and how they describe the total scope of work. The afternoon sessions kick off with Michael Chambers, who is a product rep and specification guru and will be delivering a session called 'Substitutions and Submittals: Not So Dirty Words'. This session will help the attendee define substitutions and identify the reasons why a substitution may or can be submitted on a project. Product reps need to know how to deal with substitutions and how you need to follow the rules in how they are submitted. The latest Let's Fix Construction blog talks more about substitutions and you can read it here. 'Learn from Real Life Lessons and Stories from the Road' is being delivered by T.J. Gottwalt, the Strategic Architectural Account Manager at Allegion. Draw from the experiences of a "seasoned" product representative to explore what works, and doesn't work, in getting specified. T.J. has been there and done that and learn how to best be a rep. The Product Rep University wraps up with a special 90-minute session that is encompassed by four different 15-minute sessions with 5-minute Q&A's called 'Power 90 for Product Reps: Greetings, Meetings & More to Know'. The Power 90 kicks off with Lauren Anderson called 'Use Your Manners (Do’s and Don’ts of Getting in the Door)' Please. Thank you. Calling ahead. Asking for a meeting. Following up promptly. These are just a few of the best practices of getting in the door at a firm and Lauren will help you with this. Eric will personally be delivering the next session in the Power 90 called 'Networking and Social Media for Product Reps'. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn are all social channels to use, but CSI meetings are also great places to network and meet with people. Eric is going to do his best to deliver how best to use these channels and outlets to meet people. An addition spec session is next in the Power 90 with 'Specifications: How You Can Help as a Product Representative' presented by Senior Associate and Specifications at RATIO in Indianapolis, Ivette Bruns. How do you get your product(s) specified? Ivette will inform you the numerous ways you can go about working your product into a project. The last session in the Power 90 is 'Why Wasn’t My Product Used?' with Jake LaManna, the Quality Assurance Manager at Walsh Construction Co. Are you asking the wrong questions? Surprise, the answer is yes. Learn how to balance the strengths and weaknesses (quality) of the product with the manufacturer’s support of the product honestly, with an eye toward growing relationships, not just growing sales Product Rep University is just one component of this year’s CONSTRUCT show. Cherise Lakeside will host the fifth annual Emerging Professionals Day (formerly known as Young Professionals) Program on Wednesday, October 9th as well, which is built for those 35 and under to provide the attendees with the training, networking, mentoring, and education that they need to boost their careers to the next level. There is still time to save on your registration for CONSTRUCT, including Product Rep University and Emerging Professionals Day by signing up by August 6th at www.CONSTRUCTshow.com Check out more on the Product Rep University at www.CONSTRUCTshow.com/PRU. Haley is a former wilderness educator who is completing her Masters degree in environmental management at Yale. Haley shares how various in-roads inform how she connects and engages with her world. Haley has a plethora of teachers (see resource list below) informing who she is today.    The question, how do we Know what we Know started this conversation. Haley offered a few radical questions such as...  'What would it look like if the cultural American 'story' was determined by the original Native communities?' 'What would it look like for privileged white America to give up power and had the control of "the story" over to someone else?'     Considering the heavy topics, Haley shares how she works to find balance and avoid cynicism and navigating her way from dark spaces. The conversation also speaks to what one's self-righteousness may actually be hinting towards. How the Buddhist teaching, 'attachment leads to suffering' can be misunderstood to mean one doesn't care about the outcome.    Haley is wicked-smart with old-soul wisdom who's contemplations inspired Nameh's curiosity.    RESOURCES: Biggest Little Farm (movie) Braiding Sweet Grass (book) by Robin Will Kimmerer  Grammar of Animacy (essay) by Robin Will Kimmerer  Hannah Gadsby's Nanette (Netflix special) Charles Eisenstein (human)  Radical Dharma (book) by Lama Rod Owens (Buddhist teacher) and Rev. angel Kyodo Williams Mary Evelyn Tucker (Yale educator) John Grim (Yale educator) Aad Guray Nameh (song) by Snatam Kaur  -- see also DTL episode Becoming Nameh for full story   SONG: Celtic Soundscape with Nature Sounds by Allen Grey

Pre-Destination in Islam (Al-Qadr)

TheSincereSeeker's Podcast

The last pillar of the Islamic faith in which every Muslim must believe is the concept of Al-Qadr, which closely translates to pre-ordainment (or predestination/ Divine Decree, destiny, fate). When one believes in the tenet of Al-Qadr, which we'll translate as 'Divine Decree,' he or she affirms that everything good or bad that happens in his or her life comes from God the Almighty; something He Willed to happen. Al-Qadr in Arabic linguistically means to measure, to determine, to assess, to decide, to judge. In the context of Religion, the term translates to ‘Divine determined measurements and sustenance for everyone and everything, in accordance with His Wisdom and Power.’ God states in his Book: Indeed, all things We created with predestination (Quran 54:49) God the Almighty, being All-Knowing and All-Wise, knows of what we have done in the past, what we are doing now, and what we will do—even before the time of our birth. After all, can God truly be God if He didn't know everything, including the future? Whereas mankind has the free will to make their own choices in life, everything that occurs in life occurs only with the Will and Power of God. Al-Qadar comprises four components. The first component is the belief that God is All-Knowledgeable of and instigates all things and events—whether major or minor—at all times and places and regardless of their occurrence. The Almighty's foreknowledge is infallible and complete. "And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the Earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record" (Quran 6:59) The second component of Divine Decree is the belief that Allah has recorded everything from the beginning of time to the Day of Judgment, in a Tablet He has kept known as the 'Lawh Al-Mahfooth' (The Preserved Tablet). Each's lifespan, amount of substance, deeds, happiness, sorrow, and more is written and recorded in this Tablet. In fact, according to a narration of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, Allah, the Glorious, had recorded the measurements of all matters pertaining to His creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and earth. "Do you not know that Allah knows what is in the Heaven and Earth? Indeed, that is in a Record. Indeed that, for Allah, is easy" (Quran 22:70) The third component of Divine Decree is the belief that nothing can occur without the Will and Power of Allah, whether the event stems from the action of the Almighty or actions of humanity. Nothing Occurs Haphazardly; the Almighty has planned everything. "And your Lord creates what He Wills and Chooses..." (Quran 28:68) A Muslim acknowledges that whatever has touched or afflicted him, was meant to afflict him, and could not have been avoided or prevented. And whatever has not reached or afflicted him, was not meant to touch or afflict him, and he can avoid nothing unless God has willed it. Our Prophet peace be upon him narrated, 'Know if all of humanity gathered to harm you, they could not harm you unless Allah had decreed. The Pen has been lifted, and the pages have dried.' The fourth and last component of Divine Decree is the belief that Allah is the Creator and Originator of all things. "...and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination " (Quran 25:2) Whereas Allah, the Merciful, has bestowed on every human being the free will to make his or her own decisions, that does not provide an excuse for one to sin or abandon the tasks and responsibilities they are obligated to do. The fact that God has predestined everything does not change the fact that human beings have the free will to choose their course of actions. Just because each's choices are known to God beforehand, doesn't mean that they will not be held accountable on the Day of Judgment for the decisions they make and actions they take. God forces nothing upon anyone. It's also important to note that God will hold no one accountable for things out of their control, or for things they cannot do. Allah is All-Just, All-Wise, and He tests humanity according to their strength and what their soul can bear. A Muslim acknowledges the fact that whatever difficulty they are facing will be made easy for them and that they will have a way to resolve it. "God does not burden any human being with more than he is well able to bear" (Quran 2:286) A Muslim acknowledges that whatever befalls him or her, is in accordance with God's Will and Plan, whether or not they understand and accept this fact. A Muslim place his trust and reliance in God, as God brims with Wisdom in all matters. A Muslim affirms that God is All-Loving and loves His servants over one's parents do; and a Muslim affirms that whatever God does must have a good motive, so a believer always assumes good and does not lose faith. The topic of Divine Decree will never fully be understood and comprehended by humans, as this concept deals with the essence of God's Power and Will—which is beyond what our finite minds can comprehend. A Muslim benefits from the act of learning, believing, and understanding in Divine Decree in several ways. Amongst the benefits is the peace of mind and contentment in the heart that a Muslim attains as he or she acknowledges that nothing happens without a purpose. A Muslim is confident that whatever afflicted him could not have escaped him, and whatever missed him could not have reached him, as God is in full control of all happenings and events, and he predestines everything. This recognition would help a believer endure difficulties and hardships. A believer would not grieve about what could have happened if things had taken a different course, and a believer would not worry about the future because he knows that the events of tomorrow are written and predetermined already. The act of learning and believing in Divine Decree increases one's belief in, the trust of, and reliance on God, and increases one's likelihood of performing good deeds. Faith in Divine Decree decreases one's pride and arrogance, as he acknowledges that his intelligence and actions did not emanate from him and that God is the source of all that comes his way. Belief in Divine Decree makes a person refrain from fearing anyone else; inspiring his bravery as he acknowledges that no one can afflict harm on him without the Permission and Will of God. Without a strong belief in God, the human learns, life would not be worth living.

Simon Amstell is a funny guy. That's literally his job; as comedian, TV host, and recent feature film maker. He got his start as the scathing host of UK TV show Popworld, and made a name further afield when he hosted Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the late noughties. But he's been a stage performer his whole life, and in between whippity quick barbs on set, he’s invited audiences into longer and deeper conversations via his stand up. He's known for his sometimes existential, sometimes neurotic, and always highly analytical comedy. It's fair to say, Simon Amstell doesn't take things at face value. That questioning has led him through a life of therapy (in rooms and in public) and when he came to write and direct his first feature film, it spilled over to the big screen. With all of that in mind, I asked Simon Amstell to pick five songs that tell his story. Music that has soundtracked moments of personal narrative, or songs that have helped him understand the world. From anthems to ballads, to charming soundtrack throwbacks, this is a peek into Simon’s coming of age. Email me at improveandhavefun@gmail.com ..Join the conversation on the blog by going here https://bit.ly/2DVwzqG   ..Thanks for listening! This is a new, regular segment of the podcast where I discuss recent lessons learned. These are pieces of info that I've read, listened to, or recently watched that made me stop and reflect. I did these as one-offs in the past. There are affiliate links in this segment. Here are five recent lessons learned. 1- Watching Evan Carmicheal's Youtube channel; he had Simon Sinek's Top 10 Rules for Success. The rule that resonated with me was 'be the last to speak.' 'You will be told your whole life that you need to learn to listen. I would say that you need to learn to be the last to speak. I see it in boardrooms every day of the week. Even people who consider themselves good leaders who may be decent leaders, will walk into a room and say, 'Here's the problem. Here's what I think but I'm interested in your opinion. Let's go around the room.' It's too late. 'The skill to hold your opinions to yourself until everyone has spoken does two things. One, it gives everybody else the feeling that they have been heard. It gives everyone else the ability to feel that they have contributed. And two, you get the benefit of hearing what everybody else has to think before you render your opinion. The skill is really to keep your opinions to yourself. If you agree with somebody, don't nod yes. If you disagree with somebody, don't nod no. Simply sit there, take it all in, and the only thing you're allowed to do is ask questions. So that you can understand what they mean and why they have the opinion that they have. ' 'And at the end, you will get your turn. It sounds easy. It's not. Practice being the last to speak.' Here is a link to the Youtube video. http://bit.ly/2havlR4  2- I'm currently reading Ryan Holiday's 'Ego is the Enemy.' In it, he suggests to 'always be a student'. How ego prevents us from being our best self. Here is a quote on page 38: 'The power of being a student is not just that is is an extended period of instruction, it also places that ego and ambition in someone else's hands. There is a sort of ego ceiling imposed-one knows that he is not better than the 'master' he apprentices under. Not even close. You defer to them; you subsume yourself. You cannot fake or bullshit them. Education can't be 'hacked'; there are no shortcuts besides hacking it every single day. If you don't, they drop you.' If this resonated with you, this book be can purchased here http://amzn.to/2pgNkIH  3 - Listening to the audiobook version of Lewis Howes 'Mask of Masculinity' he discusses the 'Know-it-all Mask' where one feels like they must put up a front as if they know it all to get attention and feel important. This quote is on pages 176-177 of the eBook version. 'Have you ever noticed how people try to fill the dead time in a conversation by rambling on about some random topic? Have you ever noticed someone at work trying to impress the people around them by going on a long rant about something you can't even pronounce? Have you ever seen someone in an important setting suck the air out of the room by making it all about them? They always have a response, they can't let anything go, and they have to show you how smart they are. It's obnoxious, isn't it? Worse, no honest guy can critique that tendency in other people without also having to look in the mirror and admit how often they've been guilty of it themselves. I cringe when I think of those moments in my own life. I can barely stomach thinking of the opportunities I've blown or the fool I might have made of myself. I think; What if I wasn't so insecure or didn't need to feel to prove I had something to say? How different could things have been?' I've been the 'Know-It-All' guy. Wanting to make sure to get my shit in. This ties into the first lesson. Listen, be a student. I would include the lesson above this one, 'be the last to speak.' No one can know everything about anything. Mr. Howes says 'beware of experts,' 'many of us are making it up as we go along anyway.' If this interested you, the book can be purchased here http://amzn.to/2HEF7ot  4-Last year, Lewis Howes had Grant Cardone on his School Of Greatness show. I will be quoting this particular episode several times in future installments of this segment. Grant Cardone can be a hard teacher, but he is also very entertaining. In this lesson, he talked about how 'Work is a gift from God.' Here are two clips. Quote 1: 'I think work is the gift that doesn't look like a gift from God. People all talk about they don't want to work; they hate work, they hate their job. Dude, I love my jobs. I love jobs. I love having a place to work. I've been out of work. I'll take any job. I'd rather any job than no job. I'd go flip hamburgers. I like doing dirty jobs. Mike Rowe, I love Mike Rowe because he'll do the dirty job. And I trust people that will do dirty jobs. And I don't trust people that are like, "Oh, J-O-B, just over broke." Dude, you're broke now. If you even know that freaking term, you're broke now.' Quote 2: 'So, I know Tim Ferris has the Four-Hour Work Week. I don't know why, every time I say time management, I think about Tim Ferris. I'm like, dude, that's dumb ... ain't nobody ever done a four hour work week. I'd kill myself. Might be the cause of depression. Stay busy. Stay busy; you won't put a gun in your mouth. You know? Run from one thing to the next thing, as fast as you can. And everybody's like, 'Ah man, but what about life balance?' You're selfish. See, you're back to talking about yourself again. But that's what I mean about create the life you want man so that you can have, not balance, but life. Right? I'm doing my life. I don't do jobs; I do my life. So, come in here to be with you today, adds quality to my life. I didn't come to this to spread the Grant Cardone name. I spend time with Lewis Howes because it makes Grants life, Grant's life.' I love this because it helps to reframe the daily, work grind. The 9a-5p. To watch the whole Grant Cardone interview go here. http://bit.ly/2ph88zw  5 - Finally, I'm currently going through my first book by Brene Brown. 'The Gifts of Imperfection'(great title). She says that as I am right now, I am enough, I'm paraphrasing. I love this. Here is the full quote on page 23 of the ebook version. 'The greatest challenge for most of us is believing that we are worthy now, right this minute. Worthiness doesn't have prerequisites. So many of us have knowingly created/unknowingly allowed/been handed down a long list of worthiness prerequisites:' -'I'll be worthy when I lose twenty pounds. -I'll be worthy if I can get pregnant. -I'll be worthy If I get/stay sober. -I'll be worthy if everyone thinks I'm a good parent. -I'll be worthy when I can make a living selling my art. -I will be worthy when I can hold my marriage together. -I'll be worthy when I can do it all and look like I'm not even trying.' 'Here's what is truly at the heart of Wholeheartedness: Worthy now. Not if. Not when. We are worthy of love and belonging now. Right, this minute. As is. In addition to letting go of the ifs and whens, another critical piece of owning our story and claiming our worthiness is cultivating a better understanding of love and belonging.' This lifts spirits! How can we be confident about what we know—especially in an age of scepticism? This is the question that John addresses in this compelling talk on the 'Need to Know'. You would think that Christians are on the back foot here because we rely on faith to know—but John turns the tables on the sceptics and proves that 'radical doubt' is everybody's lot in life. Strangely this leads to the only conclusion—'radical faith' must match radical doubt. The Q and A session at the end is a treasure.

The Zohar teaches that the written Torah correlates to the name YHVH, the oral Torah to Elokim…when Israel heard “I is YHVH your Elohecka the study of Torah was established in their hearts. In other words, that they knew from “I is YHVH your Elohecka” the Oral Torah just as it will be in the future “No longer will each person teach his neighbors or his relatives saying, 'Know the LORD.' (Jeremiah 31:33) All of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me," declares the LORD.” In the utterance “I is YHVH” is the entire Torah. ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #143 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio "People need to know that they have all the tools within themselves. Self-awareness, which means awareness of their body, awareness of their mental space, awareness of their relationships - not only with each other, but with life and the ecosystem." —Deepak Chopra Feeling happy is one thing. Knowing why you feel happy is another. In fact, understanding precisely why and what caused you to reach a state of happiness is the sign of a person who is self-aware. And when we become self-aware, we become better able to cultivate more of what enlivens us and eliminate or effectively navigate what does not. Let me share an example of both. During the Snowmagedeon of 2017 here in Bend, Oregon, tending to removal of the snow on your roof whether a homeowner or a tenant became a regular activity for a couple of weeks. It was not rare to see more than a few people on their roofs at the same time as you drove through your neighborhood. However, I was only able to eliminate the edges of my home from snow which kept me in a more than regular state of uncertainty. It not only effected my sleep, but my days as well, as I was regularly gazing at my ceiling, something I hadn't done in earnest to note changes until now. I felt anxiety because I didn't know. I didn't know the house (I am a renter), and felt I didn't have control. On the flip side, I recently spent the holidays at the Oregon coast, and it was the not owning and not having to tend to the cabin I had rented that provided much relaxation, peace and comfort. The lack of have-tos, should-dos and must-dos allowed my mind to relax and my body to find calm. Knowing why you are feeling the way you are in any given situation requires each of us to pay attention. While we are most certainly aware and probably by default pay attention to all the external events in our lives, sometimes we neglect to observe ourselves. And not only observe, but then inquire as to why we see what we see, why we feel what we feel. To be more precise, having self-awareness is: Being able to observe ourselves, accept and recognize what we discover and be honest about how we feel, why we act certain ways in particular situations, and the change that we may need to take. It is being able to pay attention and be honest about our strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivations, and emotions. When we choose this approach, we choose to welcome a life of quality, a life of fulfillment, a life of contentment. Earlier this year, Emotional Intelligence was discussed in depth on the blog and podcast. And one of the four components of cultivating EQ was  having self-awareness. But what exactly is self-awareness? Sounds simple, but upon closer examinations it is a skill that will take our undivided attention, time and then patience as we put what we learn into practice. But first, let's look at what it isn't: Being passive aggressive Being controlling Being defensive Unconscious behavior changes In other words, not being self-aware involves not noticing how our behavior adversely effects those around us and how our unhelpful behavior sabotages the relationships we are trying to build. The benefits of being self-aware are plentiful, and overlapping of many of the tools we discuss here on TSLL and podcast (see a sampling here, here and here). Benefits of having self-awareness "Self-awareness is not self-centeredness, and spirituality is not narcissism. 'Know thyself' is not a narcissistic pursuit." —Marianne Williamson 1. Become more at peace with yourself When you take the time to listen to how you are feeling and investigate why you are feeling what you are, you become more in tune with your most authentic self. You begin the journey of searching out what piques your curiosity and thus gravitate toward moments that will cultivate more peace and harmony in your life. 2. Become better able to communicate with clarity By understanding yourself, especially the "why", you can clearly communicate with others your joy, your sadness, your frustration, your hopes. And when you speak clearly, others who truly are listening will come to know who you truly are. 3. Decision making is simplified Knowing what you want is the most significant part to making the best decision. And when we finally discover what we want, we can say no quickly to the rest. 4. Clear purpose and direction While we can always appreciate different paths that others take, when we know the direction we need to take and why we are on it, it is easier to stay focused and not stray. 5. An enriched life experience The crucial crux to reaching self-awareness is understanding the why. Magnificent power is given to each of us when we answer with clarity the "why". Upon knowing what enlivens us, what makes us shrink in fear or what tickles our curiosity, we can then seek out what will enrich us, what will heighten our experience and thus what will enrich our lives. 6. Find true fulfillment and contentment Living an enriched life is discovering what fulfillment and contentment are. Being fully present in the moment, in the lives we have created for ourselves and wanting to be there, and then having the chance to experience this similar moment everyday in varying degrees is to attain fulfillment. And we can only do that if we are honest with ourselves about what we feel and why in any given situation. 7. Optimism rises Optimism will rise as we begin to see evidence that applying what we learn about ourselves to life truly does lead us down a path that enlivens our lives. And when we see a fulfilling life is possible, we begin to believe again that life can be a truly amazing gift. 8. Reduction of guilt and regrets Due to the ability to make better decisions, the guilt and the regrets are diminished. When we confidently make decisions, being aware of how we feel and how our decision will effect others, we know the outcome, by and large, before we leap. And once we leap we accept that not everyone will applaud, but we won't regret it and we will be able to let go of judgment from others as we own our decision. 9. Improve relationships Self-awareness is a key component of having emotional intelligence, and as was discussed here, developing our EQ improves our relationships because we are cognizant of our actions and how they effect those around us, and we know how to handle ourselves effectively as we can observe accurately what we feel and why. How to develop self-awareness: "Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change." —Stephen Covey Accept the responsibility of changing responses and behaviors to external stimuli: people, situations, life Reflect on the outcome in each situation and contemplate your role Self-care (brain, body, brand) Develop high emotional intelligence Master your mind The development of soft skills, personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people, are entirely in each of our control. We can choose to recognize their power and find the patience to cultivate them as they will take time, or we can ignore an opportunity to enhance the quality of our lives and the lives of those around us. If we seek the development we are choosing to be more present in ourselves, we are choosing to be active participants and come to a better understanding of our role in the world and how we can best be a part of it. At times the process to become more self-aware may be uncomfortable, but the unease and discomfort is only temporary as it is alerting you to something that needs to be tended to before you can move forward. Tend to it and discover an increased quality of life.   ~Petit Plaisir ~L'art de la Simplicité: How to Live More with Less by Dominique Loreau   Image: source Download the Episode

Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching (lit. word). My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (John 14:23)." If you really love someone, and he/she tells you to do something, you will do it wholeheartedly, and what he/she asks or even commands you to do is not burdensome, but rather joy. This is exactly the relationship we Christians have with Christ, and with the Father. We have learned so far that the we were born through the word of truth—the death and resurrection of Christ—to be doers of the word fulfilling the will of the Father on earth. Importantly, however, this task cannot be done with the attitude of "I-have-to-do." The common mistake we make as Christians is to try to keep God's commands and do his will in the same way as the Jews in the Old Testament tried but failed. They did so without really loving God: their actions were not motivated by their love for God. This attitude always goes with legalism and hypocrisy, and everything is done for men to see. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little (Luke 7:47)." In order to base your actions upon the love of God, you will first need to know how much you are loved by God. Your "knowing" him must come from your own personal relationship with him. It is not enough to know that God loves people in a general sense. The above words were spoken by Jesus when "a sinful woman" came and stood behind him at his feet weeping: she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. Her actions indicated that she loved Jesus and God. And according to Jesus, it was because she was forgiven much. This is how a person comes to know God, and it is called "the circumcision of the heart." The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live (Deut 30:6). The problem that the world has today as a result of the Fall of Man is the inability to know God who is love. Without knowing who God is, we cannot love him, and without loving him, we cannot obey his commands. Surprisingly, the above scripture, in the middle of the book of the law, prophecies that God will makes us love him by circumcising our hearts. Jeremiah also prophesied about this calling it "a new covenant." "No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more (Jer 30:34)." Under the old covenant, people had to teach each other saying, "Know the Lord." But the ones who taught did not know him either: nobody really came to love God personally as the sinful woman whose sins were forgiven did. Yet, they tried to keep the law, but the judgments came because they failed to do so. It was because the word of God was not in their hearts. Their hearts were closed and covered with hard shells so that they could not understand what God meant and accept his words. Or, according to the oracle given through Jeremiah, their sin was engraved and inscribed on the tablets of their hearts with an iron tool and with a flint point (Jer 17:1). So, a completely new covenant has come to be made through Christ: the word of God is now written on the hearts of those who believe in him so that they can understand, know and love God, and obey what he says. In order for this to happen, his word first needs to penetrate into their hearts breaking the hard shells: this is called, "the circumcision of the heart." So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me (John 8:28)."

Learn the steps you can take to know your why and how to make it happen in a daily basis. Show notes CustomerBloom website - www.customerbloom.com Discussion Points: 0:24 Matt being on CNN and it being a wake up call 1:04 What to do with your current platform or opportunities 1:45 What do you stand for? What's your why? 2:30 Building and sustaining confidence 3:00 Getting to why as the ultimate journey 4:15 How you can get to your why and an example Transcription: Alright. It’s Matt Coffy here, the CEO of CustomerBloom. It’s another journal entry reading. I do this from time to time during the week usually a couple of times to go through what’s on my mind, and hopefully some of this information can help you through your entrepreneurial journey. This one we’re going to be talking about getting to why. Why it’s not so hard? Let’s delve into this and talk about getting to why. Being on CNN earlier this year really was a wake-up for me. It made me think about why we’re here. It’s very short time we have in life to pursue greatness. The significance is a big challenge for me, and it’s also a big challenge for other people to figure out why we’re doing it. The short answer is really I’ve been circulating around this for a while. After seeing myself on TV and understanding the ramifications of having a voice where millions of people can hear you, the question is, what am I going to do with this platform, right? It’s not about really being an agency where what we do here as a marketing company, but really it’s more about getting myself out there. I was thinking that being able to take it up a notch and provide the value in the uptake in my positioning was really a big, huge whim not in an ego level, but the point where the connections with my people who I know increase. [clickToTweet tweet="'In life, we have a very short time to pursue greatness.' @mattcoffy" quote="'In life, we have a very short time to pursue greatness.' -Matt Coffy"] A lot of people came to me and said, ‘Hey, you’re on CNN.” But the point was what was I going to do with that? The validity and the presence to work at this platforms and to gain a following and what do you stand for, so this is where I connect the why. What’s the point? These questions are valid and they help us offline and online and they may change. Your viewpoints may change. But overall when I get my jollies from the general significance of being onstage and being in the media, I was thinking maybe that’s it. Maybe that’s just delivering the message whether that message is today about marketing or tomorrow about self-improvement. Ever since I got onstage when I was younger being in bands and being obviously now a marketing guy getting up on stage and talking about marketing events, I get this stepping out and being recognized gig. I get that. But everyone wants to pursue this feeling of appreciation. But how many people actually do it? That’s where I was thinking this is where it is. It has to be somewhere around the confidence factor. How do you habitually set yourself up to do this? I was thinking about the crossroads of delivering value and showing this ability to have scalable wealth because that’s sort of where people get. They get confident. If you have scalable wealth, you’re like “Whoa, okay tomorrow it’s going to get better.” This is building out this confidence and this is the theory I started to get around this why for myself. That’s a pretty cool why. Getting to why is the ultimate journey. It’s not again about wealth. It’s about the value of bringing this ability to help other people bring the confidence forward that they can be secure and their families and so forth. I think that’s where this ends up being. This learned experience is really how I’ve been able to transfer this knowledge base. This does not come easy and it takes real discipline to make it happen. Slowly as the wheels are turning and the shift of this paradigm of this valued trusted communication that gets through me by being on stage and doing these activities, it starts to help me deliver this why. But I need to shave off parts of my day so that I have this. Like today, doing a video. So think these are the critical components that I’m thinking about that are very important. [clickToTweet tweet="'Getting to why is the ultimate journey.' @mattcoffy" quote="'Getting to why is the ultimate journey.' -Matt Coffy"] My why is really about continually fulfill the why and planning around it. Sometimes a clear windshield makes a better place to see through, and I’m starting to see some of this as it was an early indication when I finally reached that first pinnacle of being on the media network. These things I’m thinking about, and what I wanted to help you think about was how you get to your why, so sort of five steps. They’re who are you, what do you do, who do you do it for, what do they need or really want, and how does it make them change or transform. I’ll give you an example for me. Who am I? I’m Matt. I own a marketing company and I’m an entertainer. What do you do or what do you love to do? I love to entertain and perform and keep people qualified within the range of those spectrum. So I’m qualified to do some marketing strategy. I’m qualified to entertain as an entertainer. Who do you do it for? I do it really mainly for small businesses and other entrepreneurs. What do they want or need? I really think they need the information to be confident about their decision making. How do they change and transform? Well, they get stronger and grow. [clickToTweet tweet="'Know your why. It's easier than what you think.' @mattcoffy" quote="'Know your why. It's easier than what you think.' -Matt Coffy"] If you put all that stuff together in a sentence, then you can do this yourself. Think about this. Who are you? What do you do? Who do you do it for? What do they want or need, the people you serve? What happens and how do they change and transform because of what you do? Think about that. Think about those five pieces when you go today to do your daily duties. We’ll see you in the next episode. Hope you enjoyed it.

This week's episode explores the possibilities of extracting novel insights from the many great social web APIs available. Matthew Russell's Mining the Social Web is a fantastic exploration of the tools and methods, and we explore a few related topics. One helpful feature of the book is it's use of a Vagrant virtual machine. Using it, readers can easily reproduce the examples from the book, and there's a short video available that will walk you through setting up the Mining the Social Web virtual machine. The book also has an accompanying github repository which can be found here. A quote from Matthew that particularly reasonates for me was "The first commandment of Data Science is to 'Know thy data'." Take a listen for a little more context around this sage advice. In addition to the book, we also discuss some of the work done by Digital Reasoning where Matthew serves as CTO. One of their products we spend some time discussing is Synthesys, a service that processes unstructured data and delivers knowledge and insight extracted from the data. Some listeners might already be familiar with Digital Reasoning from recent coverage in Fortune Magazine on their cognitive computing efforts. For his benevolent recommendation, Matthew recommends the Hardcore History Podcast, and for his self-serving recommendation, Matthew mentioned that they are currently hiring for Data Science job opportunities at Digital Reasoning if any listeners are looking for new opportunities.

Calvary Baptist Church - Canyon Texas - David Crump, Pastor

We are to become what we already are. We are declared to be holy by the work of Christ on the cross and being made holy by the work of Christ continuing in our lives. The very heart of Christianity is this: we are loved, forgiven and accepted by God. We did not have to earn it; it was done for us through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. The old covenant was weak in that it was not accompanied by spiritual transformation. Because of this, it was inadequate, temporary, and imperfect. So it wasn’t obeyed and did not bring life. It was written on hearts of stone, not with the Spirit on the heart. . So God promised a new covenant; one that was to be better and more glorious than the first. Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. 33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." The new covenant came with the ability to change people. God would write his law, not on tablets of stone, but in their minds and in their hearts and they would be transformed. The old covenant was inadequate and temporary, but the new covenant is effective and permanent. So we don’t forget, how did we get the new covenant? Jesus said that his blood was the “blood of the new covenant, which was poured out for many.” (Mark 14:24) The new covenant came through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The suffering and death of Christ guarantees the inner change of his people. We are forever transformed by the sacrifice of Christ. The problem for many Christians is that they think they mature as believers by following the laws of the old covenant. Do this. Don’t do that. Try to be a good person. A good Christian doesn’t do those things. Be more disciplined: read your Bible, pray, share your faith. But the problem is this: that’s how the old covenant was structured and it didn’t work because people couldn’t do it. Your experience – mountain-top experience. Followed by a promise to God to do better having quiet times, sharing your faith. Then three weeks later, you’re back to the same way you were. You go away for a little while. Then another mountain-top experience, another promise to do better, another three weeks… What you are doing is a perfect pattern of the old covenant. We’re not under the old covenant. We’re under the new covenant. The new covenant came with the ability to change people. God would write his law, not on tablets of stone, but in their minds and in their hearts and they would be transformed. So if the way that we mature is not through more effort or discipline, how are we changed? 2 Corinthians 3:18 18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect (or contemplate - behold) the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. We are changed by reflecting, contemplating, and beholding Jesus Christ. • When Paul tells Corinthians to be generous. He tells them think of the generosity of Christ. His generosity is to be their motivation. • When he tells men how to treat their wives. He says love them sacrificially, like Christ loves the church. Our motivation to love our wives is the love of Christ. • When he tells people to submit to authorities, just like Christ made himself a servant. He never says good Christians do this, not that. He never says shame on you if you do that. He says reflect, contemplate and behold Christ. That is how you mature as a believer. That is how God’s law is written on your heart and you are forever transformed from the inside – by reflecting on Jesus Christ. John captured what Jesus said about having a fruitful life. John 5:5 5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. “Remain in me and you will bear much fruit”. The word for remain means to stay, dwell, live with. If you do those things, you’ll have a fruitful life. Don’t try doing it on your own – “apart from me you can do nothing”. We are not under the old covenant. We do not live by dos and don’ts. We cannot discipline ourselves into maturity or shame ourselves out of sin. Reflect and remain. Contemplate on Christ. Remember all that He has done. The Spirit will take Christ’s work and write the law on your heart and you will be forever changed.
