Warming up and cooling down properly can enhance recovery and reduce muscle soreness. Setting realistic expectations for exercise is crucial for effective recovery. Hormonal changes, such as declining estrogen levels, can affect muscle soreness and recovery. Staying hydrated throughout the day is essential for optimal recovery. Incorporating movement throughout the day, such as taking a 10-minute walk, can aid in recovery. Essential amino acids are more beneficial for muscle recovery than branched chain amino acids. Proper meal timing, including consuming protein and carbohydrates before and after workouts, can enhance recovery. Listening to your body and honoring its need for rest and recovery is important. Getting enough sleep is crucial for effective exercise recovery. The question today is not about whether proteins are essential for life and if we need to get them from food. It is and we do. Today we are talking about the source of the protein, plant versus animal. And more specifically, does one type of protein influence blood sugar control or insulin resistance? As it turns out, an abundance of branched-chain amino acids from animal protein, may be associated with insulin resistance or even type II diabetes. The National Institute for Health (NIH) has put out several journal articles, like this one, reporting that people with type II diabetes have higher levels of branched-chain amino acids than control subjects. Another more detailed NIH article goes into the connection in more detail. The title is "the emerging role of Branched-chain Amino acids in insulin resistance and Metabolism." But the entire role of branched-chain amino acids is still unclear. One NIH article suggested that when branched-chain amino acids were taken as supplements by the military to guard against traumatic brain injury, they may have been effective. However, they do not increase the growth of brain cells. The reason that there is no clear-cut proof that animal protein causes an increased risk of insulin resistance, may be that it's just complicated. One possible explanation that is being investigated is that it may be more to do with altered gene expressions, caused by mutations. Whatever it is, the problem is related to protein that comes from animals, not plants.
Why we may want to strive not to exceed the recommended intake of protein.
https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/mike-mccandless-106 If you've been around the supplement industry the past decade or two, you've undoubtedly heard of Mike McCandless, the founder of Scivation and creator of the legendary Xtend BCAA formula that upended the entire sports nutrition industry. Mike McCandless: A Master of Supplement Business Transactions The last time we publicly spoke was when Scivation was sold to NutraBolt in early 2017, but that wasn't Mike's first — nor last — business transaction. Before Scivation took off, he started in retail and Internet retail, running and selling 1Fast400 and Bulk Nutrition. After Scivation, he also started and sold KetoLogic and FBomb, and also finally parted ways with his PrimaForce single-ingredient brand that was a longtime PricePlow favorite. Mike's been listening to the PricePlow Podcast, and, well, he's got a lot to say. As is often the case with him. So we brought him on to tell his story, give his opinions, and see what he might do next. With no more non-competes in the industry, Mike's possibly itching to get involved in the next big thing, but at the “old” age of 44, he's not interested in another startup. He is, however, interested in helping good people turn their supplement businesses into transactable entities that can be sold. Prepare yourself for a podcast of the ages. Question: If a person has a hereditary weakness for Branched Chain Amino Acid Catabolism would this impact the type of diet they might choose to loose weight? Should they limit protein if it will increase their need for nutrients like Biotin? What are all the possible cofactors we should consider supplementing to support Leucine catabolism? Short Answer: Metabolizing branched-chain amino acids requires all B vitamins except folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and chloride. If you have a genetic impairment in this pathway, then reducing branched-chain amino acid intake and doubling down on cofactors is important during weight loss because the pathway will be stressed more in the catabolic state. Amino acids are the building blocks of life. They can be categorized as essential or nonessential. Essential amino acids must come from the diet, while nonessential amino acids can be made in the body. Of the essential amino acids, there is a subgroup called the ‘branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs).' There are three BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These three amino acids have different molecular structures and important metabolic activity. In this episode, we discuss the clinical importance of BCAA and how to interpret BCAA levels in context with organic acids. Make note: There are a lot more tips for longevity in the blog post than we had time for in the podcast episode, so make sure you listen to this episode as well as read the entire post. Life expectancy in America is 78.7 years according to Data from the National Vital Statistics System.(1) Although it varies from state to state. If you're an Asian American, your lifespan is expected to be about eight years longer. (2) Most people say they want to live a longer life, although the number of years is not the only goal. Keep in mind that a long life span is not the same as a quality health span. We want to live a healthier life, longer. So how do we go about healthy aging? That is the topic on this episode of A Healthy Bite. Nikki and Ashley from The Habit Society are joining me for a discussion about how to make healthy habits stick. This podcast episode was sponsored by Honey Badger, an excellent source for fitness supplements like Branched Chain Amino Acids, Electrolytes, and more. Healthy Habits for a Longer Life As mentioned in this podcast episode, there are numerous healthy habits you could employ in hopes of extending your life span. The challenge is prioritizing them and being consistent. Depending on willpower alone usually results in failure. Exercise Any form of regular exercise is better than none at all. However, there are a few forms of physical activity that have been shown to have specific benefits on a long and healthy life. (3) HIIT or High-Intensity Interval Training - According to Harvard geneticist, Dr. David Sinclair, HIIT exercise induces sirtuin defenses (a class of protein that helps regulate cellular aging) which can defend cells against disease and aging. (This is also true for intermittent fasting.) HIIT training can be done by doing sprints, jumping rope, burpees, or whatever it takes to increase your heart rate for four minutes at a time which will trigger a hypoxic response. This simply means it's hard to breathe, i.e. you're working your butt off!Strength train at least twice, but preferably three times per week, allowing a 48 hour recovery period between workouts. Kettlebells, dumbells, or whatever you have on hand will work. In between strength training days, practice active recovery exercises such as swimming or biking (at an intensity level where you can still have a comfortable conversation.)Yoga - Many studies have been done on the health benefits of yoga. Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as metabolic syndrome to mention two important ones. (4) In addition, yoga is associated with improved mental health. Yoga has benefits beyond physical fitness One of my most recent favorite tips for longevity was to start practicing yoga. I've practiced on and off over the years but recently started being consistent along with my twelve-year-old daughter. I was amazed at how much it improved my outlook. In a study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, researchers found that 12 weeks of yoga slowed cellular aging. The program consisted of 90 minutes of yoga that included physical postures, breathing, and meditation for five days a week over 12 weeks. Researchers measured biomarkers of cellular aging and stress before and after the 12-week yoga program and found that yoga slowed down markers of cellular aging and lowered measures of inflammation in the body. Yoga Can Slow Effects of Stress and Aging, Studies Suggest On a side note, yoga doesn't have to include spirituality. Of all the yoga classes I've been to, it has never been mentioned. Over 90% of people who begin practicing yoga do so for physical exercise, improved health, or stress management. You may even be surprised to know that practicing yoga changes the brain. In fact, it helps to prevent your brain from shrinking as you age! the protection of this gray matter brain volume is mostly in the left hemisphere, the side of your brain associated with positive emot...
In this podcast Fred Herbert and Tracy Herbert review the longevity benefits of BCAAs, which are beneficial for more than body builders and endurance athletes. BCAAs or Branched-Chain Amino Acids are what our muscles burn for energy. They are known to increase muscle growth, reduce muscle soreness after workouts, reduce fatigue after exercise, and can prevent muscle wasting or breaking down, but there are many other scientifically proven benefits covered in this podcast.

Amino acids are the building blocks of life. They can be categorized as being essential or nonessential. Essential amino acids must come from the diet, while nonessential amino acids can be made in the body. Of the essential amino acids, there is a subgroup called the ‘branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).’ There are three BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These three amino acids have different molecular structures and important metabolic activity. In this episode, we discuss the clinical importance of BCAA and how to interpret BCAA levels in context with organic acids. In this episode, I throw my "2 cents" in with regard to the currently very controversial idea of supplementing with BCAA's. Like many things currently on debate, there seems to be little nuance or room for the "gray area." I do my best to explain that in an ideal world where athletes consume A: enough Calories, and B: enough protein, the need for BCAA's would be relatively low, if necessary at all. However, in the real world, with real youth and endurance athletes like those I work with, consuming enough Calories and enough protein is very often a mountain too high to climb. This is where seeking something that "works" is better than missing the mark altogether. In other words, when you can't be perfect, don't let "good" be the enemy of "perfect." Just because YOU may not need to supplement with BCAA's, does not mean there is no value of benefit for someone else. What do you think?
Using branched-chain amino acid supplements has become very common for athletes on both the professional and amateur levels. Many people take them in order to improve their strength, recover much faster, and get a larger amount of muscle mass that is lean. Which branched-chain amino acids are essential? In this episode, we help you answer this question. Disclaimer * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration. In this podcast, Dr. Berg talks about Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA). Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Most of the time people would take BCAA to build muscle, but it is just a total myth. There are no human studies that show taking BCAA will increase muscle synthesis and it won't also prevent muscle loss. 3 Types of Branched Chain Amino Acids 1. Leucine 2. Isoleucine 3. Valine There are two intravenous studies that showed it decrease in protein synthesis. BCAA turns into fuel that may give you a little bit of energy while you are working out. The body needs all 9 essential amino acids for recovery, repair, and regrowth of proteins. 70% of muscle protein breakdown is recycled. The role of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that baseline BCAA concentrations predict future risk of CVD and that a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) intervention may counteract this effect.
This podcast covers the many BCAA supplement benefits, which include muscle growth, prevention of muscle lose, as well as increased workout performance and intensity. BCAAs, also known as Branched Chain Amino Acids, is a supplement that consists of 3 primary amino acids: Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. These amino acids are crucial for gaining muscle mass and maintaining muscle mass when you're trying to lose fat. By taking a BCAA supplement every day, you're aiding your body in protein synthesis, which promotes muscle growth over time. Not only that, but if you're on a low calorie diet, one of the risks of that is losing muscle mass. By taking a BCAA supplement every day, another benefit is that it helps to prevent muscle loss and to maintain the muscle mass you have. In fulminant hepatic failure (FHF), the development of hepatic encephalopathy is associated with grossly abnormal concentrations of plasma amino acids (PAA). Normalization of the ratio of branched-chain amino acids to aromatic amino acids (Fischer's ratio) correlates with clinical improvement. This study evaluated changes in PAA metabolism during 4 h of isolated, normothermic extracorporeal liver perfusion using a newly designed system containing human blood and a rhesus monkey liver. Bile and urea production were within the physiological range. Release of the transaminases AST, ALT and LDH were minimal. The ratio of branched (valine, leucine, isoleucine) to aromatic (tyrosine, phenylalanine) amino acids increased significantly. These results indicate that a xenogeneic extracorporeal liver perfusion system is capable of significantly increasing Fischer's ratio and may play a role in treating and bridging patients in FHF in the future.
The NRC has recommended amino acid requirements that help us balance our diets accordingly, but we must also pay attention to not only which nutrients are deficient, but also which nutrients are in excess. In today's talk with Clayton Chastain, Bo Williams discusses his study where he increased the amount of other branched chain amino acids fed to pigs when there was excess leucine in the diet to try and ameliorate the negative growth effects that excess leucine has on the pig. Hadley Williams is a PhD student at Kansas State University studying under Dr. Mike Tokach. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Iowa State University before continuing his studies at KSU. While at KSU he is working on validating a model on branched chain amino acids on finishing pig growth performance.
