Send us a Text Message.Richard and Stephen discuss a listener's question about HCL and pepsin supplements, as well as another question about a product for Meniere's disease. They also address a question about women losing their cycle on a carnivore diet and fasting, and explain the importance of feeding the body nutrients regularly instead of forcing prolonged periods of fasting. They suggest that proteins and fats are key for hormone production and regulation. Both Stephen and Richard discuss the best way to interpret blood test results, especially for those following a carnivore diet. They talked about the importance of looking at the context of the results and not just relying on standard ranges. They also discussed how TSH levels can be misleading and the need to consider clinical experience in addition to evidence-based studies. They touched on the importance of direct measurements for metrics like EGFR and LDL.In a live stream, someone asked about a comment made by Jake Thomas about not relying on hip thrusts for glute building. The hosts discussed their opinions on the exercise and invited Jake to come on and explain his statement. They also discussed how not to interpret specific blood tests, using an example of liver enzymes and how they can be affected by factors other than liver damage. They also mentioned that looking at patterns and multiple metrics is important in understanding blood test results.Restless leg syndrome can be caused by stress, alcohol, caffeine, vigorous exercise, lack of sleep, over-the-counter drugs, and dairy. Iron levels may also contribute, so getting a full iron panel done could help. Dairy can also inhibit iron absorption. Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins Series Part I in partnership with Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins Summit, NYC June 21 - 22, 2022  Episode Description:   "Now it's a premium on animal proteins. And at the end of the day, it shouldn't be because it is more efficient to get protein from plants than it is to get it from animals."  -Nicole Atchison   The meat industry is an example of an industry that has a disproportionate and large impact on the environment. Knowing this, we can no longer close our eyes and continue depending on the old system.   We are in the era where the future of food is headed towards increased sustainability- better for the environment, and better for the people. Investors see this and that's why the alternative proteins space is growing rapidly with innovation playing a significant role.   PURIS Foods was named Most Innovative Food Company of 2021 by the Fast Company magazine. Known for its signature "PURISpea" protein, the company has been creating innovations for over three decades, including their latest additions, PURIS 2.0, BITE+, and P870 LS. But PURIS is more than just a pea protein manufacturer.   In this episode, Justine interviews  PURIS' CEO, Nicole Atchison. Nicole expands on the factors that affect food production: ingredients, process, and technology. They also talk about why plant-based nutrition presents more benefits, how to move your diet in that direction, and how innovation is key to rapidly scaling the alternative protein space.    Meet Nicole Atchison:  Nicole Atchison serves as the CEO of PURIS Holdings, leading the company towards new innovations in food and agriculture. Their mission is to provide healthier choices for people and encourage regenerative practices to protect the soil and animals while striving to contribute further to food security. Named Most Innovative Food Company of 2021, PURIS has been continuously expanding to affect the food system and reimagining what being an environmental steward really means.    LinkedIn   Connect with PURIS Foods:  Website Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn   Connect with NextGenChef: Website  Facebook  Twitter  Instagram  YouTube   Episode Highlights: 01:07 PURIS- More Than a Pea Protein Manufacturer 04:10 Continuing the Legacy 08:21 Plant-Based Nutrition 12:55 What Goes Into What's Next?  16:06 What's Needed to Scale?

Are these products any different from the vegan products that preceded them? Are they actually good for us? And are they the best solution to our industrial agriculture problems? We also examine what it means to compare these products with their industrial meat counterparts instead of comparing them to more sustainably produced meat, or to truly plant-based protein sources, like beans. This is part one of a two-part look at fake meat.Follow @foodprintorg on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter . Stay Informed. This Episode is Sponsored By: Lazard Middle Market From football to pea protein, former NFL player Tyler Lorenzen lives by a simple mantra: “Make moves or get moved.” In this episode of The Food Institute Podcast, the CEO of PURIS, the largest U.S. pea seed company, talks about industry innovation and how his father's decision to focus on pea protein in 1985 led to some of the biggest plant-based product developments. “That's what PURIS is all about: people willing to try to make it happen.” – Tyler Lorenzen More about PURIS: In 1985, our founder set out to develop safer, more sustainable food from plants. While other scientists were busy re-engineering life in a laboratory, a lone geneticist traced innovation back to its origin: the earth. Jerry Lorenzen's breakthrough non-GMO seeds were specially bred to grow high-yield, disease-resistant crops that left the land better than it started. The resulting ingredients would become a renewable food source as nutritious and flavorful as any the world had seen. Lorenzen envisioned a closed-loop food production system uniting organic and non-GMO seed, sustainably grown crops, and clean ingredient manufacturing. Building on his seed breeding success, Jerry opened his first large-scale soybean conditioning facility in Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1999, with a second plant in Randolph, Minnesota following in 2008. It was a big step toward a World Food System that could usher in a new era of plant-based nutrition. In the early 2000s, Jerry's company, World Food Processing, identified yellow field peas as a crucial link in this food chain: a hearty rotational crop that increases farmers' productivity through double-crop farming systems. Today, the company holds genetics patents on many nutrient-rich pulses adapted to growing conditions in 14 states. With its patented milling technology, World Food Processing used yellow peas and other protein-rich pulses as raw material for its wet milling ingredient operations. In 2011, the company acquired a soy protein isolate facility in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, a final link in the company's end-to-end plant-based food system. Now with state-of-the-art operations and like-minded farmers in fourteen states, the stage was set for the next phase of Jerry's plans. As PURIS Vice President, Jerry's son Tyler spearheaded the commercial development of the company's signature pea protein, known as “PURISpea.” The product launched in 2014 and set a new standard for nutrition and flavor in plant-based protein. Tyler took the reigns as company president and shifted the enterprise to PURIS — a new brand capturing Jerry's vision for protein independence built on pure, organic ingredients. Today PURIS manufactures a spectrum of non-GMO, plant-based ingredients made from soy, pulses, lentils and corn. We source only the highest-quality organic plants and extract 100% of the nutrition from each: protein, starch, sugar, fiber and more. By going beyond protein to embrace every part of the plant, we squeeze more goodness out of everything we grow. That means less waste and environmental impact and lower costs to produce great food. Beyond Bariatric Surgery: Everything You Need to Move On

Does pea protein contain the nine essential amino acids? And if so, is this a good source of protein after bariatric surgery? Let’s look closely at popular pea protein. Hi, I’m registered dietitian nutritionist Dr. Susan Mitchell. You’re listening to the Bariatric Surgery Success podcast episode number 48. Most of my career I’ve worked in some type of media, particularly radio where I did morning drive nutrition spots for over 18 years. That’s what lead me to start podcasting and ultimately to you. I created Bariatric Surgery Success to provide you with life-changing information based on science along with simple strategies and tools to help you be successful in your transformation and your entire journey. So happy you’ve connected with me. You’re in the right place and I’m glad you’re listening. If you haven’t joined me in the private Facebook group yet, what are you waiting for? It’s called Bariatric Surgery Success with Dr. Susan Mitchell. There is good conversation happening in there. Lots of questions and feedback going on. With so many protein supplements on the market, how do you know what to choose? Plus you’ve had bariatric surgery so do all protein supplements provide what your body needs to thrive? Recently in our private Facebook group, someone asked if pea protein contains the nine essential amino acids and if so, is this a good source of protein after bariatric surgery. In this podcast, I’m not covering vegetarian or vegan diets as they’re more difficult to follow after surgery due to the limits on carbs and calories. After bariatric surgery, the big focus is and continues to be on protein, high quality protein which comes from animals or soy. So let’s talk a minute about whey protein. In a whey protein powder for example, it's typically just whey protein and not a lot of other added items you probably don’t need. Plus whey protein tends to contain a few more grams of protein per serving than pea protein. It’s a complete protein with the correct proportions of those nine essential amino acids needed by the body. It isn’t missing or low in any one of the nine. Essential amino acid means that it cannot be made by your body and must be taken in thru food. You probably know of amino acids for their role in making and repairing muscle. But these aminos do a lot more in the body from hormone production and the absorption of calcium to roles in immune function, sleep-wake cycles and sexual function. Science 101 today: One of the reasons why animal protein which includes whey protein works so well after bariatric surgery is that it has a high protein digestibility corrected amino acid score known as the PDCAA. Basically it measures protein quality. Why does that matter to you? The highest PDCAA score is 100. Milk (whey/casein), eggs, and soy all have a score of 100 and are all complete proteins. Also important is the quantity of leucine found in protein. It’s one of the nine essential amino acids which helps maintain lean tissue and the amount varies widely in products. Animal products including whey protein and soy products are very good sources of leucine. Let’s look at pea protein closer. What exactly is it? Pea protein powders or supplements are made by extracting protein from yellow peas making it naturally vegan and also gluten-free and dairy free. Both whey and pea proteins are relatively low in carbs, fat, fiber, and sugar when nothing else is added to it. Plus pea doesn’t contain any of the top food allergens such as fish, shellfish, eggs, and soy. So it’s very popular with those following a vegetarian or vegan way of life. It’s also a good source of iron from the peas. Pea protein powder is good quality and works for many people but not as well as animal protein specifically in the case of bariatric surgery. It's does contain the nine essential amino acids but here is where we dig a bit deeper. Quality matters.  A product may have all nine of the essential amino acids but be limiting in one or more. This means that the level is not high enough to meet the body’s requirement. Pea protein has a limiting amino acid or one in a very low amount which is methionine. You can add methionine to the diet by eating foods such as brown rice, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Here’s where the issue is specific to weight loss surgery. Some pea protein powders contain just pea protein. Then brown rice or seeds need to be added to the diet to boost the methionine level. What happens, the carb and fat grams get a boost up too. Other products add sunflower or pumpkins seeds directly to the pea powder which then affects the total calories along with carb and fat grams in a serving of that powder. This addition often pushes up the total carb level in a serving of pea protein powder to around eight grams compared to one or two in whey protein. I would prefer you to have the choice of those grams of carbs and fat and to use them on real foods that you love since you have to watch carbs and fat each day. Other pea protein products also contain various vitamins and minerals but not in amounts appropriate or specific to bariatric surgery. A specific bariatric vitamin-mineral supplement would better meet your needs than those added to a product not designed for weight loss surgery. Bottom line, in this case, it’s all about the very specific needs of bariatric surgery and choosing protein powder that leads to the best outcome. Pea protein is a good protein but not the best choice for post surgery. And remember, it’s all about taking care of yourself. You’re worth it!

When it comes to protein powders, whey and casein rule the roost, racking up close to $5 billion in annual sales. They deserve the limelight, too. Research has shown time and again that they’re two of the best sources of high-quality protein that you can eat. What if you don’t want to supplement with either, though? What other options do you have? You can simply eat more whole foods, but that can be easier said than done depending on your circumstances. Many people turn to soy protein powder, but that probably isn’t optimal, and especially for men. Many others choose other popular alternatives like hemp or rice protein, and many still go in for more obscure supplements like beef or collagen protein. Pea, however, is often overlooked because of concerns about its amino acid profile, digestibility, and taste. Many people simply think that peas can’t provide them with protein that’s suitable for gaining muscle or losing fat, and that it probably tastes godawful. Well, they’re wrong. As you’ll see, pea protein is actually one of the best plant-based forms of protein that you can eat–on par with the best of animal-derived powders–and, when flavored and sweetened well, has a uniquely pleasant taste. So, if you want to learn how pea protein is made, what its main benefits and drawbacks are, how it compares to whey and casein, and how to choose the best pea protein powder for you, then you want to listen to this episode. 5:01 - What is pea protein? 5:53 - Is pea protein a complete protein? 9:10 - What are the benefits of pea protein? 11:33 - What are the downsides of pea protein? 14:05- How do I choose a good pea protein? In episode 79, Kestrel welcomes Agnes Muljadi, a Los Angeles based vegan ballerina, actress, photographer and celebrity blogger, to the show. Agnes has been the face of an array of brands including Amazon, NFL, Starbucks, Reebok, Toms Shoes and Kind Snacks. "MY NATUROPATH TOLD ME IMMEDIATELY YOU HAVE TO BECOME VEGAN TODAY, AND I JUST BECAME VEGAN. I LITERALLY BECAME VEGAN IN A DAY."  -AGNES MULJADI In this chat, Agnes shares insight into what her life as a ballerina looks like, and how she became vegan, basically overnight.  Kestrel also asks Agnes about her position as a social media influencer. As influencers continue to take more of a headlining role for brands and their marketing platforms, Kestrel is always curious about where and when authenticity will rise to the top. If an influencer promotes a food product, and never actually eats it, can we tell that? If they push a pair of shoes that they would never actually want to wear, are we going to be able to realize that, as outside followers? AND, if an influencer has a socially conscious approach to their lifestyle, how do they pick and choose which brands to work with? Agnes believes that there is a dangerous line to walk when it comes to building the right partnerships and maintaining your authenticity with your audience.  Here are a couple of the people and ideas Agnes brough up throughout this chat: Pea Protein, a vegan protein supplement Alessandra Ferri, one of Agnes's favorite dancers; she is defying the "age expectation" in ballet ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ NYC EVENT ALERT Wear Your Values, hosted by Remake + Oslo Freedom Forum on September 14th, 2017 Thoughts from Remake's founder Ayesha Barenblat on her hopes for the event: "Too often the 60+ million mostly women who make our clothes, the human hands behind our fashion, are a forgotten in the glamour and glitz of fashion week. Our immersive art, film and VR tech hope to bring her back into fashion revelers consciousness in a way that doesn't paint her as a victim. But instead as the fierce, hard working girl boss that she is. So first and foremost we want NYC fashionistas, emerging designers and press to remember and celebrate the end maker. We want consumers to come away inspired and wanting to be die hard fans of the conscious fashion brands we are celebrating. We want the emerging designers coming from FIT, Pratt and Parsons to be inspired to design with intention. And we want press to not just write about the next pretty collection, what Kim Kardashian is wearing to the shows or fashion's fleeting attempts at activism be it supporting the ACLU or Planned Parenthood. We want press to instead connect the fashion world to the women who bring our fashion to life and to shine a spotlight on designers who are embracing transparency and addressing human rights in the industry. These "woke" designers are the ones we should be celebrating because the future of fashion has to be conscious".

Review: Schred1 – Comment (Audio) Review: Schred2 – Clearing Up Comment (Audio) Review: Schred3 – Zak Follow Up (Audio)   Comment: I do believe that the distinction between the different body types is actually very important as long as people understand this is just a very generic scale to give you an idea of how fast your metabolism is. I consider myself an endomorph. I’ve always been the pudgy little guy. When I started working out, I was mostly doing cardio. My goal was to get in shape and feel a bit less ashamed of my body. The problem being that I had a really sweet tooth and preferred by far sweating on a treadmill than going on a diet. Also, from my personal experience, no matter how heavy I lift and how hard I push myself, I can't "lose fat" simply with lifting. Cardio seems to be, if not the only option, at least the best for me. I did very intense cardio for about 5 months. In the end I was weighing 120 lbs for 5'3" and still looked a bit pudgy although I had very skinny arms and could nearly see my ribs. I went to see a dietician who told me being slim would basically mean a drastic change in my lifestyle, both for exercises and diet. However, she also gave me this little explanation about body types, mostly to make me understand I had a slow metabolism and what it would imply. If I wanted to get in shape, it'd have been much easier for me to start lifting than to try and lose fat. So far, my results have been pretty good and I've started out-lifting ectomorphs friends who were ahead of me when I started. All in all, what I'm trying to say is, even though the generalization of body types shouldn't be taking too seriously, having a general idea of the pros and cons of your metabolism can really help you finding the workout and diet that suit you best. I refuse to give up on my occasional cookie or ice cream, but if it hadn't been for learning about the endomorph body type and their ability to gain size easily, I would never have started weightlifting in the first place.   B.      From: Anonymous @Snowheart (Image with Question) Comment: t doesn't seem to look like I've changed much or changed at all after these past two years and it's actually quite demotivating and frustrating to see. I've done what I can within those two years and learning in between. There has been 5x5 (which I've learned quite a bit from previous podcast), HIIT and now, body weight training. Food intake is kept at a minimal as I'm trying to lose those fat and changing them into muscle mass.   Unfortunately, I am unable to fix down on a diet as money is an issue and my family isn't very supportive of what I'm going through. Being a Chinese and whatnot, I'm unable to bring them down to say that white rice is bad for me at the moment cause I did went through that phase and had an argument, even few days ago. We just need to have white rice. I tried adding in brown rice but two issues: 1) it's expensive to obtain and 2) my dad doesn't eat brown rice. Thus, boils down to the issue of food intake where I've been trying to cut half of my portion till now. I know food is a huge issue here but it's difficult in an environment where my parents aren't that supportive of it. That goes for food and for training, I'm on a body weight training with a personal trainer. I've just started on that recently in December 2013 and still going on till now. What I've been doing are push ups, jumping lunges, squats, sand bag training, etc,. It's intense, that much I could say cause my trainer is one hell of a trainer. He pushes and I'm hoping to see results but I'm only on personal training with him once a week. The remaining days, I go on HIIT like RPM classes, biking. I hate running the treadmill and it's not what keeps me motivated. Classes like those keeps me focus and really force myself to push forward. Even after all those, I'm still not gaining or losing much. As you can see from the comparison, it's really demotivating.   I'm only taking whey protein and fat burner as supplements. And I have no access to any nutritionist. Supplements that I'm taking. I'm only taking whey protein and fat burner as supplements.
