In part 2 of our interview with Gregg Gillies, "The Soccer Specialist," Ian continues the discussion on youth soccer development, diving deeper into the cultural issues that affect how kids train today. Gregg tackles the decline of free play in American youth sports and how it's stifling creativity and growth in soccer players. He also explores how parents and coaches can better support youth players' development, focusing on long-term progress instead of short-term wins.   Key Talking Points: The decline of free play and its impact on soccer creativity. How American youth soccer differs from soccer cultures around the world. The balance between technical training and playing for fun. The societal challenges of getting kids to play outside. Parental pressures and their influence on coaching and development. Gregg's views on why youth soccer leagues focus too much on winning. The importance of structured but simplified training to avoid overwhelming players. Differences in youth soccer training between the U.S. and other countries. The problem with over-scheduling games and under-prioritizing focused training. How failure and mistakes are vital for young players' learning and growth. Tune in to Learn: Why free play is so important for developing soccer IQ and creativity. The pitfalls of over-coaching and over-scheduling games for youth players. How parents can foster better training habits and play environments for their kids. The cultural barriers preventing American kids from playing soccer for fun. Gregg's insights into how the U.S. can build a better youth soccer culture. Why making mistakes is essential for player growth and development. How structured training programs, like Gregg's, can complement free play. 10 Quotes from Gregg: "Kids don't just go out and play soccer anymore—they need to be encouraged." "The U.S. has so many options for kids, but soccer culture suffers because of it." "Free play helps players develop creativity and tactical awareness naturally." "Structured leagues are fine, but they shouldn't replace going outside and just playing." "Parents can be part of the solution—take your kid to the park with a ball." "The best training in the world won't work if kids aren't learning through play." "Winning at U6 or U7 doesn't matter—what matters is development." "Youth soccer needs less pressure on winning and more on skill-building." "Mistakes are how players learn—without failure, you can't develop fully." "In soccer, it's the small things that make a big difference in player growth." Ever wondered why some sports teams perform far better than others, despite having similar levels of talent? One answer lies within the realm of communication, and in our latest conversation with the insightful retired NCAA coach, Pete Whitney, we shine a light on this often overlooked, yet critical aspect of team sports. Together, we explore the communication dynamic in hockey, tracing its influence from youth leagues up to the NCAA level, and discussing how it can often be the determining factor between a winning and losing team.Retired NCAA Coach Pete Whitney shines a spotlight on the multifaceted nature of communication on a hockey team. From 21-year-old freshman athletes to high school teams and younger, the necessity of creating a comfortable environment for meaningful exchanges is stressed upon. With a perfect blend of old-school values and new-age technology, we talk about how tools like group texts can foster team unity, while also emphasizing the human-driven elements of active engagement and trust-building. We also put forth some valuable perspective on coaching high school level teams - a feat that requires a deft balancing act of clear communication, expectation setting, and understanding the trials of growing athletes.Wrapping up our conversation, we cast our gaze on the younger rungs of the sports ladder, discussing strategies on how to develop effective communication skills in young athletes, all the way from U6 to U14 levels. Equating young players to molten lava, we underscore the need for adult guidance, patience, and the teaching of social etiquette to mould them into mature, respectful individuals. Before we sign off, we focus on the complexities of coaching, setting realistic expectations, and the importance of fostering a positive environment for emerging talent. -- Our Kids Play Hockey is proud to be sponsored by Game Seven Group and Hockey Wraparound. At Game Seven Group our mission is to Transform Individuals Into Teams Capable Of The Extraordinary using Lee MJ Elias' proven team bonding strategy for sports teams, business teams, and anything & everything in between.

The mixed part of the report is that the headline is the unemployment rate (U3) ticked up from 3.8% to 4.0%. The expectation was for no change. This was mostly due to an increase in the labor force participation, which moved up 0.2 percentage points after being essentially unchanged since February. At this point the economy needs the additional workers, so this is a fundamentally good thing. The broader measure of labor underutilization (U6) also rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%. Average hourly earnings rose 2.7% from a year ago, slightly below expectations, but about in line with recent history. Jobs gains were led by professional and business services, followed by manufacturing, which had a solid 30,000 job addition, mostly in durable goods. Strength was also seen in health care, construction, and mining. Retail was the only sector with a notable loss of jobs (-22,000), but that did not offset last month's gain of 25,000. Other sectors were essentially unchanged. All in all, a pretty good report, despite an easily misinterpreted rise in unemployment. Media Links: Web Site:   www.MetroAtlantaChamber.com Guest Linkedin Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-cunningham-6027134 Georgia Business Radio Interviewing industry and thought leaders with compelling stories. See Peter in person at The MoneyShow Orlando https://conferences.moneyshow.com/moneyshow-orlando/ Stronger than Expected Jobs Number We actually got a bunch of economic data released today; apparently the shutdown no longer is affecting some of these newer releases, although we still have a bunch of old data that has yet to be released. I have a feeling that there is a lot of weak economic data that has yet to come out. Today we got some stronger than expected data including the January jobs number. They were looking for 158,000 jobs to be created, which would follow the 312,000 number that we got for December, which was a surprisingly strong number.  So the consensus was that we would have a weaker number in January; but we ended up with 304,000 jobs allegedly being created in January. December Jobs Number Revised Down 90,000 Jobs But they now tell us that we didn't create 312,000 jobs in December - we only created 222,000 jobs, which is still a pretty big number, but it's 90,000 less.  That's a huge revision, to think that they were off by 90,000 jobs.  Maybe they're off by 90,000 jobs in January. I guess we'll have to wait another month to find out.  But that number was much bigger than what was expected; and of course, even if you take into consideration the revisions, it was still a better net number than what the markets were looking for. U6 Went from 7.6% to 8.1% The official unemployment rate rose to 4%.  Part of that was because the Labor Force Participation Rate continued to notch up. It went from 63.1 to 63.2, and since more people are now looking for work, those people are now officially unemployed. But a bigger story than the official rate is the U6 rate, which is far more accurate if you want to get a real look at the U.S. labor market.  Of course, it's not 100% accurate because it only includes discouraged workers who have discouraged for under a year.  So it doesn't capture any of the long-term unemployed, which are a big part of the American labor market. But the U6 rate includes the short-term discouraged workers, but also the people who are working part time, but who really want to work full time. We had a surge, like half a million part-time jobs were added according to household survey during the month, so a lot of people working part time - they probably want to work full time, but they are settling for part time work.  That meant that the U6 number went from 7.6 to 8.1.

Yesterday we got the first jobs report of the year and the way Wall Street and the media seem to be spinning it: "It was a good report!" It was good news because the headline number beat expectations: We created 227,000 jobs in January vs the 175,000 that had been expected Of course it was an improvement on the 157,000 jobs which was a disappointing report in December But once again, if you look beneath the headline number, you'll find that there are a lot more problems to this report than the media is reporting First of all, as always, the lion's share of these jobs are lower-paying service sector jobs They're in retail trade, leisure and hospitality So we're not creating the types of jobs that will Make America Great Again In fact, if you look at the higher paying jobs - manufacturing, mining logging These jobs are barely adding workers, if not losing workers But the bigger story here has to do with what's happening to labor force participation, wages and unemployment The official U3 Unemployment rate went up from 4.7% to 4.8% The more revealing U6 number, which I think paints a more accurate picture of the true state of the labor market That went up from 9.2% to 9.4% Even Donald Trump, when he was campaigning, said that that number was far more accurate than Obama's official numbers Why did the unemployment rate go up so much, considering that we had 227,00 jobs created?  The reason was that we had over 700,000 workers re-enter the labor force This goes against the trend that has dominated the entirety of the Obama administration Where we saw a mass exodus of workers leaving the labor force In fact, the labor force participation rate went up in January from 62.7% to 62.9% First of all, why did so many Americans decide to re-enter the labor force in January? Maybe there are 2 possible explanations and maybe they're both accurate: One might have to do with all the optimism surrounding the Donald Trump Presidency Remember, Donald Trump campaigned that he was going to be the greatest jobs President And it's possible that a lot of people believe that this is going to happen So they are re-entering the labor force to land one of these great jobs that President Trump will be delivering You have to enter the labor force in order to apply for one of these jobs Another reason is that the people who have been "sitting out" of labor force participation Maybe circumstances are finally catching up with them, maybe they're running out of money Maybe the cost of living has risen to the point that they have to, by necessity, find a job
