Jon Mew is CEO of the Internet Advertising Bureau UK.The organisation represents and regulates the £23bn digital advertising industry, counting Google, Meta and Twitter among its members, with a mission to “promote transparency and build a sustainable future for online marketing.”Jon shares how the industry is toughening its response to fraudsters – standing up for greater consumer protection, but arguing they could do more with the government's help. He also shares how they are tackling online influencers who endorse products without revealing that they are paid, and in what ways restricting promotion of products high in fat, salt and sugar affects small business owners.
When 90s super-nerds created the first internet banner ads, they weren't even sure what to do with them. Dan and his special guests explore the rise of online ads, from their humble beginnings in a San Francisco basement to the sophisticated targeting tools we have today.

$47 Billion Man Is a Professional Provocateur Some people collect stamps, memorabilia, music, dolls, Zippo lighters, bottle caps, stamps, Happy Meals toys, rocks, bad habits … Steven Manning collects people and stories. Steve asserts to lead a preposterously fulfilling life. That tends to happen to people who will try and fail to read everything in print and online, talk to anybody about anything, anywhere, anytime. And then try to live all of that. His “Life Is Not A Dress Rehearsal” and “A Life Without Passion Is A Life Not Worth Living” philosophies are on his omnipresent imaginary teleprompter. He was born and raised until his teens in Communist Romania. After a delightful stretch as near homeless in Rome, with a great escape story to tell, his family finally settled in Woody Allen's den of mediocre intellect, Los Angeles, where he continues to reside. Enduring La La Land is made possible by hard-earned access to the rest of the world, courtesy of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, and well-used and beefy-limits credit cards backed by success in business. He is credited with the origination of prominent creative and empirical concepts, targeting database concepts, media strategies, promotional concepts, incentive devices, channels, and decision-making predictive techniques, all widely used in the marketing world. His expertise encompasses a number of disciplines including marketing, advertising, corporate governance, relationship development & management, and conflict resolution. He is acknowledged to be among the most influential consumer database developers, owners & marketers in the history of direct response. Steve is one of the pioneers of advertising on the internet, where he has been active since the introduction of commercial applications in the medium. He has generated billions of dollars in revenues during his business life.
The internet was once overly populated with pornography. Nowadays, internet porn makes up only about four percent of the entire web. Does that mean that the internet has turned into a valuable source of knowledge? Not so fast. In fact, the internet is now mostly populated by advertisements. It is so overtaken by the ads of big business that is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between the ads and the content you are supposedly watching and that is exactly the point. Content creators get paid handsomely to lie to their followers, to coax them into thinking that they are actually providing them with valuable advice. That is demonstrably false. Here are some internet advertising statistics taken directly from the advertisers themselves: Buyers Expect Digital Ad Spend to Increase 6% Over 2020, Compared to a 30% Fall in Traditional Media 2. Consumers Spent 10% More Time With Digital in March-July 2020 3. Only Digital Channels Can Expect Net Gains in FY2020 Ad Spend 4. Internet Advertising Revenues Increased 15.9% Over 2019 and Continue to Grow in 2020 5. Mobile Now Makes up More Nearly 70% of Internet Advertising 6. 74% Increase in Mobile Advertising Over the Last 9 Years 7. 53% of Internet Advertising Revenue was Made in the Second Half Year in 2019 8. The Top 10 Leading Ad-Selling Companies Account for 77% of Total Revenues 9. Total Search Revenues Increased 12.9% in 2019, but Desktop Search Revenues Stayed Static 10. Banner-Related Digital Advertising Accounts for 31% of the Total Spend source: influencemarketinghub.com But I am sure this all just in my head. I am sure that I am developing some sort of fantasy in my mind about this. I am sure that you really wanted to pay $1550 for some bed on Amazon you could have gotten for $800 in store. And I am also sure that no one could ever fool you. You are far too smart for that, too intelligent, too positive. You are in the in crowd after all so you would know. And why wouldn't you? Companies like Nike, Weight Watchers, Ford, Wells Fargo, Tesla, Google, Facebook, and so many more have paid millions of dollars to reassure you of this. They told you that you were too smart to fall for all the advertising. You know too much, so how could I possibly know anything that you don't? You have it your way (Burger King). You thrive (Kaiser). You just do it (Nike). And do you know what? That all makes sense seeing as how you think different (Apple). And just look at you, you're the best a man can get (Gillette). And hey, why should you stop? You are lovin' it after all (McDonald's). You think big (Imax). You taste the rainbow (Skittles). You think outside the bun (Taco Bell). You are high quality and quality never goes out of style (Levi's). You are better because you eat fresh (Subway). You are better because you belong anywhere (AirBnB). It's all for freedom and freedom for all (Harley Davidson) so sit down and open happiness (Coca Cola). Unless you’re an Internet history buff, you’ve probably never heard of NetGravity. However, NetGravity is, in some ways, one of the most important startups in Internet history. It was the first Internet advertising company. Considering much of the Internet these days relies on advertising, being the company that started the online advertising industry is… well… kind of a big deal. The advantage of being first in an important market like Internet advertising is that, in the early days, all the biggest and best customers don't have any other options. That was true for NetGravity. Launched in 1995, NetGravity quickly gobbled up most of the world's most popular Internet companies as their customers, including companies like Yahoo!, Netscape, and Time Warner. NetGravity's explosive growth led to an early entry into the public markets and a rapid rise in valuation. At the same time, John and the NetGravity team soon found themselves battling competitors who were taking a different -- and more lucrative -- approach to online advertising. In this episode of Web Masters, hear the full story of how NetGravity defended its position as the market leader, pivoted to stay relevant, and ultimately achieved a successful exit. For a complete transcript of the episode, click here.

When you’re launching, scaling, or even selling a business, it comes with a lot of tough challenges… as well as some amazing breakthroughs. Today’s show is all about achieving those breakthroughs on a regular basis and getting more of those ‘aha’ moments. Scott Duffy has been listed as a “Top 10 Keynote Speaker” by Entrepreneur and even sold one of his businesses to Richard Branson. He is also the best-selling author of Launched! and gives a deeper dive into his most recent book, Breakthrough, in today’s episode. As a junior in college, Scott got into a horrific car accident with a garbage truck while he was going 90 miles an hour. He had two brain hemorrhages and had to drop out of school. While on bed rest, Scott was listening to motivational speakers and he made it his mission to intern/work for these very people who helped him recover. After his recovery, he went back to school and landed an internship with Tony Robbins. The job was hard. Scott would be on the road for 50 straight weeks and his training team would speak up to seven days a week, five times a day. Unfortunately, Scott burned out from this high-paced and high-energy environment. After some time off, Scott joined with his old roommate to create an Internet company (this was back in 1994). The first two months were a disaster. Nothing was working. So, Scott decided to go where the action was and move to San Francisco where all the smart guys, like Yahoo, were. A ton of friends’ couches and six months later, Scott ran out of money and people stopped calling him back. So, he pawned all of his stuff! He took the money he had, bought some pizzas, smashed his resume into the cheese, and delivered them to companies. He got a call from Bill Peck, the father of Internet Advertising, and that’s when Scott got his first breakthrough. Welcome to episode 16 of The Business Growth Podcast by Brand Shouter. In this episode, I take aim at restaurant owners who do a poor job of foundational marketing (that’s most of them). I offer a 4 step process to help get their marketing on track and compete in a world where anyone can say anything at anytime that hurts a restaurants chance to survive. Hi, I’m Dan Ericson owner of Brand Shouter, an internet marketing agency located in the northwest corner of Washington state. In many years of marketing, I’ve learned many lessons - some the hard way. Today, I want to share my knowledge with anyone that would like to listen. The purpose of this podcast is to help other entrepreneurs reach their prospective clients and, ultimately, their goals. Rich LeFurgy has been bridging Silicon Valley and Madison Avenue for years, as a board member, advisor, or investor in over 60 online advertising companies. He joins us today for a talk on the key issues he has seen over his 17-year ad agency career, what’s happening with data and consumer protection, virtuosity and quality in data, and the importance of transparency and trustworthy relationships in all facets of an agency. Takeaways: [5:29] Consumers are now creating more and more economic value for a whole bunch of players in our ecosystem. [6:30] It has created an open door for tech companies now that brands are responsible for the data that they use. This creates an imperative for brands to use that data, and Rich discusses a whole new category called 21st Century Direct-to-Consumer Brands. [8:48] Data has somewhat been a dirty word for the publishing community because they see it as undermining the value of their audiences. [11:02] Rich sees a need for online marketing to do a better job at creating new customers for companies. Direct-to-consumer has done a great job using branded content and social media, but now it’s up to the publishing community to figure out how to stay relevant. [14:17] Rich sees it more incumbent upon publishers to embrace data as another way to make money. One key way to do this is to start tracking where they are within a consumer’s purchase journey. [15:53] Much of what is driving the consumer world is deals, not just content. [20:41] Rich discusses the future of single-sign-on entities and the way they differ from SpyWare and Gator. The single-sign-on is a thread to get us to up our standard for the quality of our data. [23:17] The disclosure of a post that has been sponsored is very important to maintaining a sense of honesty in influencer platforms. [25:56] The fact that we are now consuming more media and consuming it on our mobile devices, is a huge change from recent years. [37:18] It’s important to provide transparency in data, so marketers know what information they are working with. [39:39] Companies and marketers that are smart are going to get ahead of data quality and tackle transparency head on. [47:10] There is a battle in every company with a technology arm and a media arm. The browser folks want to put in default adblocking, where the media folks feel that will lose the sign on, content, and personalization. [58:48] Today, agencies are investing in technology, and Rich sees them very much still alive on the creative end. [1:00:13] There is a tremendous about AI that is being applied to consumer and brand data to start to come up with campaigns. [1:13:02] Rich discusses his role at Lotlinx and their ground-breaking technology that works to provide digital advertising technology to automotive dealers in the U.S. Quotes: ● “Publishers have got to continue to have a great relationship with consumers and provide value to brands.” ● “It’s not just about content. It’s a lot about deals.” ● “Part of getting data fixed is giving consumers control over their own data.” ● “Technology is evolving faster than policy.” ● “We’ve got to go to that next level so we figure out data quality.” ● “The business that is transacted is still based on relationships.” Mentioned in This Episode: John Oliver — Facebook is a Toilet @Rich_LeFurgy California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 SpyWare / Gator Consumer Group Accuses Internet Search Engines of Deception Survata Justice Department Sues to Stop California Net Neutrality Law AdAge How Spotify Harnesses Data to Connect With Its 75 Million Users IAB Lotlinx Direct Brand Summit

SummaryIn this episode we continue our exploration into the roots Internet advertising. We’re speaking with Jason Strober, another Internet Advertising pioneer and co-founder of Focalink Media Services, Inc. Focalink was responsible for arguably the first remote ad server, a crucial technical component that made online advertising possible. Jason recounts for us the early, “wild west” days when a small group of ambitious people made an entire industry up from scratch, and with it, laid the financial foundation for the Internet as we know it. The global internet advertising industry is projected to reach US $100 billion by 2017, driven by the United States, which is the largest country for internet advertising. However, the most prominent country for growth in the internet advertising industry will be China. China generated sales of more than US $8.9 billion in 2012, and Euromonitor predicts China will become the second most profitable country for internet advertising by 2017. This growth will be driven by the massive number of internet users in China. More than half a billion people currently use the internet in the country, and that number is expected to grow by another 200 million by 2017.

Write an ad targeted to the people that will respond to what you have. Limit your budget on ads until you know it works...then when you know it works...TURN IT UP!!!The 3 PLACES PEOPLE CLICK online TO PURCHASE a product: 1. Advertisement 2. EMAIL(BIG) 3. WORD OF MOUTH(BIG). The biggest thing people miss in internet marketing is their sales process. New Land (VIRTUAL REAL ESTATE) is being created everyday....The price for you to Advertise is CHEEEEEP!! Take advantage while you can. You can't just expect to put up a site and make money. An OFFER is a single-point of entry message into a sales funnel. Direct eyeballs to a place where people will respond so you can make some money! The game changes when you get people to invest financially instead of giving things for free. People pay more attention to products/services they purchase rather than FREE stuff they get online.

Omar Hamoui could be called a ”serial entrepreneur.” Immediately out of college he started his first business a consulting company that grew to between 20 and 25 people. Then came what he characterizes as the one job he has ever had: a two-year stint working at Sony. After that Hamoui created a series of startups built around the expanding ecosystem of mobile devices. While he was a first-year MBA student at Wharton in 2006 he came up with the idea for AdMob a company that sells advertising for phones' mobile browsers. In the space of a year AdMob claims to have become the ”world's largest mobile advertising marketplace.” Knowledge at Wharton spoke to Hamoui about the evolution of mobile advertising.
