Before becoming a city manager, Chris Mann built a career around public affairs, public relations, and political campaign messaging. In this episode, we talk about how important it is for city managers and other public sector executives to cultivate an image or identity that they can use to differentiate themselves during the job search process. By narrating your own story, you will be able to illustrate and articulate how your skills and abilities uniquely position for success. We also spend time talking about how we both pivoted from the world of politics into the city management profession and walked a very non-traditional path.   SHOW NOTES: Links to Chris Mann's LinkedIn profile and Gov360 Podcast Previous interview with Chris: Ep. 127: Knowing Your Why & Being Prepared to Execute Subscribe to my FREE weekly newsletter. What to listen for:Our hosts Robin, Stacy, and Crystal tackle not just the technical, but also the legal considerations of cross-training your dogs. After all, when a dog is run through both narcotics and explosives detection work and engaged in a high-stakes operation, the consequences can be disastrous if they are unable to respond to the right odors on time–simply because their training emphasizes diversity over specialization. At the same time, if done strategically, it is possible to cross-train in order to supplement detection ability, rather than cause frustration as odors compete in the field. But it's not just your dog's interests and strengths that you have to consider, but your own as a handler as well. The Dames of Detection invite us to find our “why” when thinking about cross-training our canine. We need to consider our particular skill set and career goals before adding more training to our plate. Are you more interested in athletics and competition, or are you dedicated exclusively to search-and-rescue? Shout out to David, Iris, Rachel, Mona, Jeanne, Kristi. Thanks for sharing the message so others can benefit from our collective experience Today I want to talk about knowing Why and Knowing Your Why. For many years, I would help with the onboarding process, and i would always encourage new folks to understand they why to a process. We often times hired experienced people used to approaching situations in varied ways. So I would tell them the newlywed roast story. By encouraging people to use their critical thinking and analytical skills, it helps us all to be better instead of repeating without thought of improvement. When we ask why, we better understand the reasoning behind a process, which not only helps us with current application, but future modified applications. Similarly, we should be asking ourselves "why" we do the things we do. Are our behaviors helping us or hindering us. Perhaps, we grew up in a place where complaining was expected as a way to join in conversation but not leading toward a solution. Perhaps, we came from a competitive environment, where sharing information for the good of the whole was sacrificed to maintain top of the leaderboard status. Perhaps being self-deprecating was seen as humility versus speaking words of limitation and doubt. When we take time to understand Why behind our thoughts, actions, and behaviors, we can replace them with the values we intentionally want to experience and share. So as you go through the week, instead of just going through the motions, ask yourself "why" and if you need to make a change Why Not Make that Change now?!

The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

Your why is what will help build the emotional connection that will make people trust you and want to buy from you. Knowing you why, your purpose, is a critical part of building a strong foundation for a successful business. Simon Sinek speaks about the importance of knowing your why and starting with why in his TED Talk. About Chris Olson Chris Olson is the master of knowing your why. After more than a decade working in broadcast media, Christ founded a communications consultancy and began leveraging her behind-the-scenes media expertise to benefit clients. Through that work, Christ realized her why - to support women-owned businesses in confidently communicating their purpose and impact, setting them up for entrepreneurial success. She is the founder of the My Founder Story platform. Chris is the author of Whyography, Building a Brand Fueled with Purpose. Knowing your why is important for confidence and funding Women get about 4% of venture capital. Similarly, only 25% of women who apply for business loans receive the loans. This is not because of bad credit or poor ideas. Most likely, it is a lack of confidence or inability to show the impact you will have through your business when pitching to investors. Knowing your why is critical for conveying confidence. To learn more about women in business and funding for women-owned businesses, listen to episode 112 with Maureen Borzachiello.  Clarity comes from knowing your why (purpose) Getting clear on your brand is the foundation for your business. Clarity on your why, your purpose, what is trigging the emotions inside of you to create your business. If struggling to find clarity around your why use Robyn's purpose equation: values + visions + passions = purpose (knowing your why). Likewise, when you have clarity and are focusing on your why, you will feel more fulfilled. The Why Journey Map Values are a huge part of your why. Start with the values that resonate with you. Sometimes, people choose values that are aspirational but aren't how you are showing up in the world. Choose values that you are actively living. You can look at where and how you are spending your money. Most likely, you are purchasing from brands and companies that align with your values. Similarly, evaluate how your values show up in your everyday life. The first step is getting clear on your values. Narrow your values down to five that show up in your life in action every day. The tiny why statement There are 20 power verbs are works like education, empowers, advances, the words that indicate a powerful action. What power verb would you choose for your business and connect that to the person you serve? For example, Chris's tiny why statement is: I empower women-owned businesses. To grow confidence in your business, practice saying your tiny why statement. The impact statement Now, to make your tiny why statement your why statement, add the impact you have on your ideal customer. For example, Chris wants to help other women make an impact by confidently communicating how they serve others. Shoppers want to purchase from purpose-driven businesses. Likewise, people want to work for purpose-driven businesses. Therefore, there are a lot of reasons to have clarity around knowing your why and your purpose. Be sure that your why is about how you are making an impact in the world. Leading with why instead of what From a young age, we are taught to lead with what. But leading with your why is much more impactful for building connections and keeping the conversations moving forward. Eventually, you get to your what, but it is best to lead with your why. Likewise, starting with your why will hook people because of an emotional connection. Similarly, your why is rooted in who you are so you don't have to remember buzz words or bullet points, you are speaking from your heart and with confidence. What is whyography? Whyography is writing about your why. Your why is your natural differentiator. The concept of whyography is the art and science of telling your story. Think about how the human brain reacts to stories. Whyography touches on telling your story to really engage the senses of your audience. Start with the big moment of wanting to start your business. Next, explain how you pursued the path to do this, and the climax is taking the leap and starting your business. Then, encapsulate what you are doing in your business and your why. The conclusion is your vision for the future, what you hope your business is doing five years from now. Whyography captures the principles of storytelling and the power of purpose. Your why is your compass When feeling stuck, pivoting, rebranding, or feeling confused, come back to your purpose to regain clarity. Your why may shift slightly, but if you think of it as a compass, you will be able to redirect yourself by regaining clarity.  If you feel like you are floundering, or your business is floundering it is because you aren't aligned with your purpose. Do the exercise of the tiny why statement to bring yourself back to a place of clarity. Likewise, ask yourself if you are doing something to serve your clients? Ask yourself what impact you want to have. When you look at your why think about the moments in your life that were big moments? Look at the moments good and bad, that have guided you to what you want to do. For example, does empathy drive you? And what did you do next? Your values will show up in what you did next. Walk It Off With Candy and Ryan

What's Your Value?Episode 19We are going to be talking about goal setting over the next month in preparation for the Inevitable New Year's Resolutions! Studies show that only 8% of Americans who make New Year's Resolutions actually keep them and 80% have failed by the beginning of Feb. (Google) We still do them year after year, we love the idea of starting something fresh, why we like starting on Monday. Why do we fail?Self sabotage Fear of failureFear of successLack of disciplineAnd many other great reasons..So why are defining our values important toward meeting our goals? We need to know our why. Simon Sinek, author of the book Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Finding Purpose for You and Your Team, writes that “it is only when you understand your “why” (or your purpose) that you'll be more capable of pursuing the things that give you fulfillment. It will serve as your point of reference for all your actions and decisions from this moment on, allowing you to measure your progress and know when you have met your goals.”So how do we figure out our core values or our “pieces of why”?Our values go together to build our why, for example, one of my top values is humor, so when I look for my purpose, I want to be able to have fun and find humor. Doesn't mean I would do stand up, just means that humor is important to me and if things get too serious, I don't find much value in it.The Major Benefits of Knowing Your “Why”1.It provides clarity in your life.2.It infuses you with passion for your goals.3.It keeps you focused on your goals.4.It helps you live healthier and longer.•Numerous studies have shown that having a purpose in life leads to longer lifespans in older adults5.It helps you develop resilience.6.It allows you to live a life with integrity. How do you find your why?Journaling and self-reflection, learning and knowing yourself and the things you care about.Think about what you can do to make other's lives betterWhat are some things that “make time fly” where are you most happy?Think back to what you liked to do as a kid Look at your strengths, when do people ask for your help? What would you do if you were out of time? What do you like to teach? What do you talk about most? These questions can help guide you to find that purpose or value statement, also asking the why behind these things, known as the “5 Why process” Example: I liked to play basketball when I was a kid…why…why…and so on…In research led by University College London and published in The Lancet, research respondents who felt that they had a sense of purpose or meaning in their lives were shown to live longer than those who did notAction items: Think about the things that make you ticWrite them down and prioritize/number them.Write the top 5 down and put them somewhere that you can see them and reflect on them.Verse for today:Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome to a brand spanking new season of The Lorraine Murphy Show!  The theme for this season is “connection” - and you'll see this theme to come to life in a different way each week of this season. First up, I'm jumping into a topic that I find stresses many people out… a lot.  Living an on-purpose/purposeful/purpose-aligned life is held up as the gold standard, and it's incredibly easy to feel like you're falling short if you're not 100%, 24/7 “on purpose” in your life.   I've got some strong opinions when it comes to the area of purpose, which I share in this episode - including: How I see women stressing themselves out unnecessarily about their purpose What purpose is NOT How purpose is often confused with vision and passion My definition of purpose The biggest mic drop insight that I've shared recently when I talk about purpose, and how freeing it is when we can onboard it into our lives  What the most destructive pitfall is for those trying to connect their purpose How we can physically and spiritually prepare ourselves to dive into exploring our purpose, and why this is so important The five questions I ask my mentees to answer to help them get closer to their purpose   Resources from this episode: Simon Sinek's TED talk on “Knowing Your Why” is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZoJKF_VuA&vl=en   The five self-exploration questions I recommend are: My vision: if my life could look any way and I COULD NOT FAIL, what would I do? My passions: What are the day-to-day moments of bliss that I experience in my life? Purpose: What gets me excited/furious/happy? Purpose: When was a time that I felt I had a strong purpose? And why was that? Purpose: Who are three purposeful people I know, and why am I drawn to them?   And I would LOVE for you to save the date to attend my Reconnection Tour… I'll be visiting six cities over April/May for an illuminating and very fun evening event.  This definitely one to bring some girlfriends to! Welcome to the next episode of Level Up, the podcast that focuses on leadership, self improvement and continued growth throughout our everyday lives.  I'm Jose, your host and I am joined by my co-host, and the CEO of All-American Lumping LLC, one of the fastest growing national 3PL Logistics and Freight Handling companies in the U.S., Crystal Garcia. We aired our first podcast last week for those of you who haven't had an opportunity to listen to it, we discussed "Finding your WHY".  We discussed the importance of find your passion in what you do and the reasons why you do it.   We had a pretty emotional experience sharing our Whys and how we found our passion in helping and developing others, providing for our families and shared a few of our war stories about how we discovered our Why while serving in the military. Read Excerpt: Live by Your Values & Everything Else Will Fall Into PlaceBy: Claire Hodgson That was an excerpt from a blog on Tiny Budda Blog and can be found at www.tinybuddha.com, by Burn the Corset Founder, and blogger Claire Hudgson Today we are going to discuss the importance of Living Your Values.  This is a topic that I believe is very important, whether you're a leader in your family, a leader in your community or a leader in business and that applies to the entrepreneur as well.  We are going to cover the dangers of not living your values, how to identify your personal values, how to identify whether or not you are living those values or just pretending to, and how to apply your values in your day to day decisions. So, first, I'd like to ask: Q: What did you think about the article? So why are living by your values so important that we would make it one of our first podcasts?  There are often many sets of values that we are all exposed too.  Your family values, religious values, your work values, and most important, your personal values.  These can all be completely different or they can have similarities.  The more they are the same, the more you are accepted in that particular group.  The more that your personal values are different, the less you are accepted by each of these groups. Your core values remind you of what's important.  When you know your values, you make decisions that allow you to support and live according to what you know is most important to you. Your values help you make decisions.  If you know your personal value is honesty, you won't go around telling lies.  Obviously, Pinocchio had a problem with that one.  When you make decisions that align with your values, you can sleep at night, your not conflicted and you live life with no regrets. Your values allow you to live your life aligned on your life's true path towards happiness and success.  If family is your strongest value and all of your actions align with providing and building up your family, then you will be happy and content.  If your family cant stand you because you treat your family like crap, then you will be miserable and unhappy. Finally, living your values will ensure that you live your most authentic self.  People who say they value hard work but are constantly over sleeping and leaving work early can be labeled as a phony or a fake. Q: Are your life and values aligned?  How do you know? Now there are some dangers and pitfalls associated with not living your values.  Many of the choices that we make are based on our values and if we do not know what are values are, or are living by someone else's value we run the risk of living a unfulfilled and unhappy life.   Our habits, behaviors and relationships are based 99% on our values.  The problem is that when we are unaware of our values, we slide into default mode.  Default mode is our auto-pilot.  It's very similar to the state of unawareness that makes take your "Go to work route" on a Sunday when you are supposed to be going Walmart.  You find yourself auto-turning, auto-stopping, auto-cruising. This can be terrible when you're getting into a new relationship, or applying for a new job.  It can wreak havoc on your health, based on you eating or exercise habits. Q: Have you ever made a decision that you later realized was not aligned with your personal values? So some of you may be asking, "How do I identify my personal values?"   First, identify the times that you have been happiest in your life.  What were doing, who were you with?  What about that experience made you happy? Q: What is one of your most happiest moments? Secondly, identify when you were most proud.  What made you proud?  Who shared in this experience with you?  What about the experience made you proud? Q:  What is one of your most proudest moments? Third, Identify when you felt most satisfied.  What made you feel satisfied and fulfilled?  What about the experience made you feel satisfied? Q: What is one of your most fulfilling moments? Fourthly, identify one of your most upsetting and/or frustrating moments.  What made you upset?  What about that experience made you frustrated?  Who were you with? Q: What was one of your most upsetting, disappointing or frustrating moments? Lastly, Determine your top values based on your happiest moments, your proudest moments, your most fulfilling moments, and your most upsetting or disappointing moments. Q:  What are you top values? I've worked in many value-driven organizations.  Organizations such as the military and Amazon, just to name two.  These types of organizations drive the importance of their values and encourage decision making based on their values. Q: How have your personal values impacted your career and your business? Army - Loyalty, Discipline, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Physical and Moral Courage  Amazon - Customer Obsession, Invent & Simplify, Ownership, Insist on High Standards, Frugality, Earn Trust, Delivery Results, Fail Fast, Disagree & Commit, Are Right A lot, Learn & Be Curious, Think Big, Hire and Develop the Best, Bias for Action All-American Lumping - Service, Honor, Integrity, Respect, Loyalty Your values influence how you act, they influence the decisions you make and in business, corporate values can influence the decisions and behaviors of you and your employees. Q: Have you ever done something at work that was aligned with your personal values that did not align with your corporate values? As we wrap it up, to summarize, our values drive our actions. It drives our behavior.  Our habits and our relationships.  If this podcast is the first time you've even contemplated your personal values, the I encourage you to do our Call To Action at the end of this podcast.   If you've learned that you are or have been living your life outside of your personal values, then now is the time to course correct.  Now is the time to get out of autopilot and take charge of the direction of your life and life with purpose, direction and motivation. If you are living your values, then pat yourself on the back buddy, because you're on your way to winning the game!  Continue to reasses your values as you life unfolds.  Continue to check your life azimuth to ensure your still on course and enjoy the ride.As a call to action I would like to invite our listeners to CTA:  Go to www.personalvale.es and take the personal values assessment for free.   Use the results to begin living a life of purpose and passion. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

About This Month's Book There's never been a better time to start your own business. But let's face it: It can be scary to put yourself out there and tackle the business side of things. Fortunately, you're not alone! There is a movement of women stepping into their God-given gifts to make money doing what they love. If you'd like to join them, this is your handbook that will take the ideas in your head and the dream in your heart and turn them into action. In Business Boutique, Christy Wright will: Help you create a step-by-step, customized plan to start and grow your business. Show you how to manage your time so you can have a business—and life—that you love. Explain overwhelming business stuff like pricing, taxes, and budgeting in simple terms. Teach you how to use marketing to reach the right people in the right way. Empower you to sell your product or service with confidence. Christy will help you get your business idea off the ground or take your existing business to the next level. You can do this. It's time for you to make money doing what you love! Source Sarah's Takeaway: I am in awe of Christy's ability in story telling and how she uses her own background as the daughter of an entreprenuer and her own passion for helping women to share the steps to laying down a foundation to succeed as a business owner. She easily defines the steps and actions to take, and is a cheerleader for you as you go thorough the pages of the book. Probably most beneficial, she lets you know you are NOT alone and your voice and approach matters. Shaunae's Takeaway: I absolutely adore Christy and her passion for helping women succeed in their businesses! This book is a great source to get your business started, the correct way. She talks about building a business in four tiers, like a wedding cake (because her mom is a baker.) She works through the foundation (the base) and moves her way up. I love that she gives action steps at the end of each chapter so you can apply what you're learning to your own business. This book is definitely a must-read for anyone who is starting their business! Favorite Quotes: “You were made for more than just getting by; fulfillment is waiting for you in work that you love. You're not a supporting character in the movie of your life; you're the lead role. You have permission, the responsibility even, to be in the driver's seat of your own life. That includes investing in things that bring you joy and make you proud. You have permission to do things that make you like yourself. It's not selfish; it's self-preservation, and it's smart.” “You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” “Stop anticipating the sacrifice and start anticipating the reward” “We undervalue our strengths because they may seem easy and obvious to us.” “The prettiest ads don't win the campaign. The best research wins the campaign.” lessons about marketing “A brand is no longer what we tell the customer it is - it is what the customers tell each other it is.” “Because here is the reality: It's your responsibility to make yourself feel good. It's your responsibility to make yourself happy, confident, and proud. It's your responsibility to make yourself a person that your family wants to be around, a woman that your husband wants to take on a date, a mom that your kids want to play with, and a friend that people want to hang out with. No one can do that for you.” Get your copy of Business Boutique!
