Current political choices are bringing very real challenges to advances over the last few decades in Māori rights, with the National/New Zealand First/ACT coalition repealing or reviewing a significant amount of policy pertaining to Māori. Two significant events in the last few weeks have made these issues even more prominent: the death of the seventh Māori monarch, King Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, celebrated by orators at his tangi for his lifetime of advocacy for Kotahitanga (unity); and the progression of the contentious Treaty Principles Bill, which many observers argue risks furthering division within society. Guests Kassie Hartendorp (ActionStation) and Dominic O'Sullivan (Charles Sturt University) discuss the meaning of Kotahitanga in this tense political context.

Leaders from most political parties, ACT being a notable exception, were in attendance on Monday. The Paralympics TikTok account has courted controversy by publishing content that some say mocks the athletes. Is all publicity good publicity? Finally! The Finale! Yeah, I finally got around to uploading this super fantastically awesome episode of Six DeGrees chillin' with our favorite punk rock daddio KING-T. Yes it is a little late and I do apologize to K-T and his band NYALIS. I think he would understand though. Sometimes too much shiz comes in and up all at once and creates what is called a "creative block". Use your imagination on that one lol, but yeah it is a thing and it happens to all of us. Some of us more often than others. So that's my big excuse on why the last episode of Six DeGrees of a Belly Dancer is late. Trust me, getting to hang out with King T was so fun it will make it well worth the wait. Thank you everyone for subscribing and listening. NOTE: This episode was recorded in February, which was prior to the recent allegations regarding Jonathan Majors. Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi and Andre join me this week for the home going services of Queen Ramonda and her son King T'Challa in Marvel's Wakanda Forever. The movie wasted no time addressing the tremendous loss of Chadwick Boseman, so we follow that lead in our discussion and start by talking about the direction Ryan Coogler took in bringing that loss to the screen.  We went into the film thinking there would only be one major loss so it was a surprise when Queen Ramonda was tragically killed.  I ask Candi and Andre to share their thoughts about that narrative decision.  Other topics covered include:Kilmonger's return (ugh)Namor as an antagonistThoughts on storylines for the returning secondary charactersWhat Wakanda Forever as a meditation on grief and loss meant for it as a Marvel filmRyan's original vision for Wakanda Forever before Chadwick's tragic deathPost-credit scene with the wee baby Toussaint What we would've left on the cutting room floor of this long as* filmAnd of course we close with our thirst segment, which was inspired by the African American urge to avoid vast bodies of water.  Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.Find and follow Candi on Twitter here.  You can find and support Andre here.Support the showFollow the pod on IG and Twitter. The circumstances under which we found ourselves in the Black Panther sequel were completely unfortunate, but the popularity of Black Panther guaranteed that there would be a sequel, with or without Chadwick Boseman. The ship was much harder to steer without him, but we're talking about that sequel today, Wakanda Forever! "Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with Nakia and Everett Ross to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom." There is so much that is going on with this film. The exit of Chadwick, the introduction of the newest Black Panther, the introduction of Namor, but there were many smaller subplots that were all branching out. You should definitely watch the movie in order to decide whether you think it was too much, or perfect, but there is definitely much about the movie that you need to pay attention to. MOVIE DISCUSSION:  Melvin & Dan can only agree on one thing: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is, in fact, a Marvel movie. To focus their attention, Melvin proposes four ambitions that he feels will make-or-break the film for audience members. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 44-minutes discussing Kevin Conroy's passing, Video Rental store nostalgia, and media curation (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Reflecting on Black Panther's immense cultural impact and success. Reminiscing on the intended plans for King T'Challa in the MCU post-Endgame. Melvin liked that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a somewhat self-serious profile as opposed to the more flippant, light sensibilities of other Marvel fare. However, Melvin has four headers - ambitions - that he observed within Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that he felt prevented him from "buying in" to the fiction of the film but may actually be beneficial qualities to certain audience members. His first point covers the film's global stage for a political drama between potentially warring counties. His second point covers the personal character stories within the film. A brief aside from the points, Melvin and Daniel agree: the suits at the end of the movie aren't that good. Melvin's third point has to do with the film's metatextual pairing of T'Challa's fictional death and Chadwick Boseman's real-life death. Melvin's final point covers what he would consider inefficient pacing, such as scenes clearly setting up future movies, or scenes having only one purpose at a time rather than being dynamic in detail. Recommendations: Galatians: An Expositional Commentary by R.C. MARVEL STUDIOS AND THE MCU brings us the next chapter in the epic story of BLACK PANTHER. Black Panther first  appeared in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist-coplotter Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (cover-dated July 1966) in the Silver Age of Comic Books. Hanging out is overrated. Inflation is at an all time high. Walmart & Target have decided to “rollback” prices on produce & food in order to reduce waste. Hot pockets & pizza bites for the hood. Fivio Foreign talked about his deal with Mase on Million Dollars Worth of Game. Stating he got $5K for a deal that he's still currently in. Another moment where we assessed the details of the music industry as we know it. Monkey Pox is on the rise. Let's make it plain… it seems like they're trying to make diseases hilarious. So will we. Monkey's have never not been funny. You want people to take it seriously, call it something else. We talked about the latest black panther installment, Wakanda Forever. No Chadwick Boseman this go round (Godbless the dead). This means that Shuri and the rest of the Dora Milaje will be supporting the legacy of the Black Panther. Anticipate a lot of memorialized images of King T'challa & the girl power aspects of Marvel's latest approach to entertainment. What we've been watching/listening to rounded out the Podcast. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked primarily with producer DJ Pooh, and was responsible for the rise of Tha Alkaholiks, whom he helped guide into the rap game. Now a days we have the fullness of the Gospel restored, we do have access to something or actually someone better than nanotech and His name is Jesus Christ, we don't have to have clunky heavy suits that weigh us down and are super inconvenient to even walk around in. We can build custom suits with Christ, like Tony Stark's newest Iron Man suit, with the tools God has made available to us in these latter days. Speaking of armor, another suit I really love is the King T'challa's Black Panther suit made of Vibranium Micro Weave Mesh which hides in his super cool necklace and is also deployed in an instant. Did you know the last suit Tony Stark made was called the Mark 85 Ironman Armor? IKR! I want to see those movies too! In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Bart Lardner from the University of Saskatchewan to discuss cattle backgrounding programs. Backgrounding is the time period from weaning the calf until they are sold for finishing in a feedyard. Backgrounding programs allow the animal to grow out slowly to build frame so that they can then be finished on the concentrate diet at the next production stage. Calves on these programs are fed a high forage:concentrate diet. Dr. Lardner suggests evaluating the feedstuffs that are available and then also consider feeding byproduct feeds such as dried distillers grains to ensure appropriate nutrient composition of the diet. Veterinarians should work with producers to determine the target rate of gain and evaluate the economic return of these programs to the producer. He also discusses breed influences on selection of a program and how weather or environment can interrupt a program. Veterinarians should be involved with developing appropriate vaccination and parasite control programs for calves and discuss the value of implants and other performance enhancing technologies to increase the economic return for the producer. Calves in backgrounding programs can have improved health and production once they arrive on the feedlot and Dr. Lardner encourages producers to appropriately market these calves to feedyards.  Relevant publications:Kumar R, Lardner HA, McKinnon JJ, Christensen DA, Damiran D and Larson K.  2012.  Comparison of alternative backgrounding systems on beef calf performance, feedlot finishing performance, carcass traits and system cost of gain.  Professional Animal Scientist.  28:541-551.Kelln BM, Lardner HA, Schoenau JJ and King T.  2012.  Effects of beef cow winter feeding systems, pen manure and compost on soil nitrogen and phosphorous amounts and distribution, soil density and crop biomass.  Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems.  92:183-194.Jungnitsch PF, Schoenau JJ, Lardner HA, Jefferson PG. 2011. So we mainly just had fun and did some "would you rather"s. We pay our respects to the late and great Chadwick Boseman who passed away recently. Best known for his role as King T'challa in Black Panther, he will be surely missed. Truly a hero. But yeah really just a kinda go with the flow episode this week guys. Last week I brought you a conversation with Rachael Gatling, a woman who is an incredible representation of where I want to go in leadership in my current company. This episode was a moment of validation of my dreams and something a lot of people of color do not have the privilege to experience. There are so few of us showing up positively and realizing our full potential because of the historical chokehold of racism on our dreams. It was then so surreal that in the same week, Chadwick Boseman died. Best known for his portrayal of the lead role, King T'challa in the iconic marvel superhero movie Black Panther, Chadwick's death shook all of us, especially black people. Black Panther was a pantheon of positive representation of black people and we saw ourselves reflected positively for the first time on the big screen at scale. Have a listen to my expanded thoughts on this topic in this episode. Trump said he will not be meeting with the Blake family, but will be meeting with law enforcement. Joe Biden has said he has spoken to the Blake family. In Portland, Oregon, the killing of a far-right supporter on Saturday, August 29, got this response from Donald Trump: "Rest In Peace." Trump tweeted support for the far-right group that organized in Portland a Trump-support caravan, where people fired paint balls and pepper spray at protesters. He said they were "great patriots." Trump has consistently refused to call to account violence by his supporters, but has said that Homeland Security will set up an office to investigate "left-wing violent protesters." Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, sheriffs killed a Black man who was stopped by them while riding his bicycle. Is the nation headed for a race war? Or is the nation already in a race war? Has Donald Trump, while stoking racist sentiments and divisions, managed to shift the focus away from police killings of Black people to law and order? Our guests are Rev. Dr. Monica L. Clipping (often stylized as clipping.) is an experimental hip hop group from LA. The group is three people: rapper Daveed Diggs and producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes. (You may know Daveed from his Tony Award winning role of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway musical Hamilton.) I was nervous (and sick as a dog with the flu) when I got to hang out with the folks in clipping. The trio were in town to support their 2016 album, Splendor & Misery on Sub Pop Records. The record is is an Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album that follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him. The band is always pushing boundaries. Their Sub Pop debut, CLPPNG, omitted “I” in lyrics to "vacate rap of its traditional center." What do the band have to say to defend the "concept album"? Was it hard work creating authentic sci-fi "space sounds" for the Splendor & Misery? What is the group's take on using gendered pronouns in lyrics? Is using the word "bitch" in lyrics still problematic? Is it hard to collaborate when the music the band makes is so unique? Do they write for specific featured artists? How does the band work together? What weird joke does the band make about Canadians? You'll have to listen to find out! Sadly all clipping.'s songs contain adult language, so I won't be able to release a radio edit. A shame, since these guys are doing some really interesting work. The Annals of King T’aejo: Founder of Korea’s Choson Dynasty (Harvard University Press, 2014) translates an important excerpt from The Veritable Records of the Choson Dynasty, a historical record that documents important events and historical developments from the first 472 years of the Choson period in Korean history, into English. Compiled in 1409 and completed in 1413, the annals of King T’aejo – founder of the Choson Dynasty – include a wealth of information about both domestic and foreign affairs in the fifteenth century. Readers will find much of interest to inform broader histories of weather, animals, clothing, envoy relations, architecture, urban studies, family studies, and much, much more. We dig deep regarding his album with DJ Premier, his full collaborative album with Nas, an all new Pete Rock & CL Smooth album, a potential collab long player with Madlib and his forthcoming self-produced Smif N Wessun album. In addition to all of this he expresses his desire to work on something more substantial with fellow-guest, Nottz as well as hos own solo releases this year. A true Conspiracy moment that's too good to miss. Nottz drops onto the episode to reveal all about his future work with a who's who of hip hop artists. As the world patiently awaits any glimpse of news regarding one of hip hop's most anticipated albums, Nottz takes us on an informative journey regarding the creation of Dr Dre's Detox. We talk track names, track order, featured artists and those producers who are handling production on the soon-to-be released Detox album, including himself, Jake One and DJ Khalil. In addition to revealing that he produces the first track on Detox, featuring The Game and Busta Rhymes, Nottz talks us through hearing the original, now shelved version of Detox, an album Nottz claims was created from literally 100s of finished Dr Dre tracks. Want to know how Detox was made? Well here is your answer. Smoke DZA was one of the most refreshingly prolific artists of 2010. He joins us on this episode, full of character, to explore his career including the successes of an independent artist, hip hop's tendency to stereotype, possible future collaborative albums with Devin The Dude, Pete Rock and of course his current work on an EP with Alchemist. 2011 is sure to bring the world a whole sack full of Smoke DZA and it was our pleasure to share this one. What a Kush! MC Eiht is an absolute accomplished pillar of West Coast hip hop. His new album with DJ Premier is set to be one of the most diverse adventures in his massive career, so it was our true honor to welcome him onto this episode to discuss the creation of "Which Way Is West". As wise as you would expect, Eiht analyzes the current West Coast scene, citing socio-political and economic factors as reasons for the hiatus so many artists have taken. He tells us in detail how this is all set top change and with his new group 1st Generation (comprising of himself, Kurupt, King T,Jayo Felony, The Chill, Sir Jinx, Gangsta from The Comrads)and their forthcoming album. Showbiz drops onto the show to talk about the creative process of his new album with KRS One, including the way that KRS always turns up to studios with a briefcase packed with rhymes. We also take a massive exploration of his beat history, the sad news that DITC are now officially no more and the way that Flavor Unit rejected the classic beat that then became "Sound Of The Police". Enemy Soil's epic producer C-Lance takes time out from his busy production duties to discuss all of the projects that he has an active role in producing this year, including Ill Bill * Vinnie Paz "Heavy Metal Kingz", Jedi Mind Tricks "Violence Begets Violence", Diabolic's new album, Doap Nixon, Sicknature and much more - this one is for the hardcore! AND THAT'S NOT ALL! If Verbal Kent’s only long-term interest is to become part of hip hop history, then his latest offering, Save Yourself, simply adds his signature to his application letter for Hall Of Fame status! Whether its collaborations with legends such as Masta Ace, Sadat X, Edo. G One Be Lo solidify his comfort zone or dropping complementary flows over soundscapes from favorites like Pete Rock, Marco Polo, Apollo Brown, !llmind, Verbal Kent is on a mission. In this accomplished and ambitious interview, Verbal Kent reaches out to you, the listener, to salvage yourself from sleeping on his work, addressing such topics as the making of Save Yourself, collaborations, time management versus quality, fans. He also leaves the interview with the promise to bring UK legend Blade, back out of retirement. That's the gifted and talented Blade, not that retarded council estate, slime faced playground grime artist that's just emerged using the same name. PLUS!
