Fawsitt gives an honest assessment of his career to date, the importance of milestones (like his upcoming 100th cap) and what drives him. This week's subject is Tlazolteotl, the Aztec goddess of filth, lust, and patroness of adulterers. Tlazolteotl is both the disease and the cure, being a goddess of debauchery, but also the one who can purify you from debauchery. We look at the idea of “Holy S**t”, how excrement was viewed as a divine and healing substance, and how this idea compares in other cultures. We also discuss how “filth” ends up being connected with the Feminine, and how this can affect our ideas abuot sex and sensual pleasure.

[Hey there! This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]Dear Readership,Many of you have brought to our attention a pattern among our editors and reporters of obfuscating, withholding, downplaying, anesthetizing, and otherwise obstructing a clear picture of wrongdoing that would be of significant interest to the welfare of the public. We want to clear the air and get back to our primary mission of… well, keeping our outlet profitable.Last week, after a prominent politician claimed that puppies are carrying CIA-planted tracking chips that record our personal conversations and, thus, must all be euthanized, it was probably misguided of us to frame this public figure as simply “canine averse”. We regret considering in good faith the unexpected benefits of such a proposal. Some of our best friends are dogs, but we worried that being publicly opposed to the mass murder of puppies might make us look biased and unprofessional. On the heels of that was a story we published about a group that wants to ban Android users from the public square. While a few of you did respond approvingly, we recognize it was arguably inappropriate to “shoot the s**t” about possible roundup strategies. From our end, it was all intended in good fun, although we acknowledge that this extremist group was not joking, expressed in a quote we printed from that group's leader: “Seriously, we're not joking about this. Eliminate all Android users.” We should have pushed back instead of responding with nervous laughter and collegial banter. Our editorial page recently published an op-ed entitled “I Am Rooting for Climate Change to Kill All of You”, written by a tech billionaire who is venturing into the Grief Economy with a new project that would monetize our stolen personal data into post-mortem avatars for the Metaverse. To be honest, despite the unbridled bloodlust of this capitalist monster, something about the idea sounded really damn cool. Also: he owns this outlet.A few months ago, we attracted heavy criticism for an admittedly soft profile of a cult leader who claims the Moon is made entirely of congealed queso and Armageddon will see all of us turned into nachos for aliens.Unfortunately, we treated this belief system as equally valid to any other, which meant failing to ask important follow-up questions like “are you certain you're not a dipshit” and “have you considered switching away from a less paranoid strain”.We've been dropping the ball a lot when it comes to news about Space. About a year ago, a team of star reporters at this outlet discovered, via top sources in the government, that an asteroid with a size approximately equivalent to the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area is on a precise trajectory to destroy everything we know and love.We admit this certainly qualifies as critical news, but we felt—and we still feel—there were no ethical boundaries breached by waiting to inform the public until it could be effectively utilized for our reporters' book PR campaign, which, as you probably know, began in earnest last month. (“Holy S**t, This is How It Ends” was released to rave reviews from many of our reporters' colleagues and debuted at #1 in the “Dystopian Non-Fiction” category on Amazon.)So many of you have written to us with anger and disgust over the alleged devolution of our journalistic integrity, and although we respectfully disagree with the tenor of such an accusation, we would like to offer a silver lining:It could be much worse. Imagine a world—for the sake of argument—in which these stories were about the vicious and violent targeting of a particular group of human beings based on race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or some other characteristic that would be vulnerable to disinformation weaponized about their humanity.Or what if they were about the actions of a growing extremist movement hellbent on destroying our last vestiges of supposed representative democracy and replacing it with—gosh, I don't know, just spitballing—a white supremacist worldview that masquerades as a religion that's protected by theocratic fascists posing as credible judicial authorities?Sounds terrifying! Someone call Stephen King and pitch that for his next horror tome.Anyway, we appreciate the feedback, and we look forward to your future concerns and inquiries, at least for this remaining month of our collective existence.Sincerely,Prestige National News OutletCharlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Odonis Odonis is the Toronto-based duo of Dean Tzenos and Denholm Whale. Together they create varied music that verges on everything from EBM and Industrial to shoegaze aggression. Their sound has been described as “claustrophobic electronic music that sounds like the end of the world.” Their new album Spectrums (Editors note; Holy S!@t it's good) marks what they have called a “third chapter” in their career, yet, the release is still dripping in their noisy synth industrial history. In their words “We've finally found where we fit inside all of the noise”. They picked Ministry's 1986 album Twitch. A "transitional" album that finds the band on the cusp of creating what would become the post punk/industrial sound that would take the world by storm in the early 90's. We start off the pod talking about how unnecessarily cool the Cadillac Escalade is and if we were an adult woman who was married to someone very wealthy would we drive it? Corbin then told a story about the DMV that will make every single other DMV story sound boring as hell. After that we discuss what arguments must have been like before smartphones, and trust me it is not pretty. Finally we end the show ranking things that aren't a cult but feel like a cult. Welcome to the first DR&R Show of the new year! 2012....Holy S**t!We'll start out with the Usual Suspects and then Kai Ray takes center stage with a classic DR&R wiggler: Jungle Talk [I want some of that]. The original release was on Lodestar 1961 but we'll have to settle with my 45 rpm on Bright Star [same year].For the 1st set we hand the mic off to Jimmy Reed - I'm goin' upside your head [Vee Jay 1964] a sure candidate for misogynist platter of the '60s...sorry Jagger but "Under My Thumb" gets 2nd billing to the musings of Mr. Reed! Albert Collins turns up the heat with "Whatcha Say" a pounder of gigantic proportions! [Imperial 1968]. Ronnie Hawkins asks the age-old lovers question: "Who do you love?" which got it's waxing on Roulette in 1963...and the author of WDYLOve, Bo Diddley, follows up with all apologies: Dearest Darlin' which appeared on a Checker 45 in 1958 [a great year for music!].Purging out the demon for the start of the 2nd set with a killer garage waxing from the Hangmen on Monument 1966...quintessential garage! Following up with a west coast ditty by The Jewels on Imperial "Natural natural ditty" 1955. And just to prove that all music is just music we spin the opening cut from Brisbane's The Saints 1st LP - "I'm Stranded". We found an Aussie pressing of their first 2 pounding punk LP's last year! For my money, The Saints were opening the punk door for EVERYONE! From Australia to Morris County, NJ with a band [that changed their name from The Pseudo-Realists to Good Reason for no good reason] with a song that should've been blasting on every car radio "Hold on to me". A song that's near and dear to my heart as this was the last recordings of my band in the '90s. DRR fave Mark Oliver Everett aka The Eels from a release that I didn't pick up until recently "End Times" from 2010.Last set of the show: The Queen of Rock-a-billy Wanda Jackson cooks up a vampy meal with Funnel of Love on the Capitol label from 1961. And speaking of vamps: Billie Holiday w/ the Teddy Wilson Orchestra swings like 60 from 1941 on Columbia Records - Miss Brown to you. You betcha! Jethro Tull informs us that "It's a new day yesterday" while the Gang of Four revisits one of their pounders "Naturals no in it"....Over and Out with the Braz Gonsalves 7.....Raga Rock on Odeon Records 1970....I've had this one for a while and this is its first airing....I hope you like the show / tell all your friends and we'll see you next week!

I love everything you stand for the radically aligned life. What does that mean to be radically aligned? Ooh, that's a great question. I was feeling into this the other day. So first of all, everything happens in the exact moment it's supposed to. And before we jumped on here, we were talking about birthing something into the world. And so when you're pregnant with something like a baby, you can't push it out at six months or five months or rush it and everything. Great takes time. And so I remember being under this tree in San Diego, um, about a year and a half ago, and I was meditating. I don't remember what I was meditating at, but I was at a Brendon Burchard seminar and a bird pooped on my shoulder. And as the bird pooped on my shoulder, I got the name radically aligned. And so I love it when that happens to me. And it happened to me recently too. So I'm feeling really good about myself. I'm like, something good's about to happen. I love that. Well, they say it's good luck, but I mean, just to love it when you get a bird poops on your shoulders, just like, that's hilarious.Totally. So when I think of radical alignment, there's different stages of it, and I actually have this. This graph that I've been creating to really map it out on our journey and how to really awaken to our highest self and our full potential, but essentially radical alignment is you are radically aligned. It's like the center of. Across, you know, not being religious that the center across, like it's the dead center of the core of who you are. And there's no being off path. There's no compromising. There's no, I'm not sure. There's no maybes. There is no, um, Oh. Um, if this happens, then that will happen. It's a strong knowing that, well, you are.And being radically honest with your path and not compromising and going off path because of distractions, because of old programming, because of what people think you should do because of self-sabotaging behavior when you're radically aligned. You are unstoppable. And these are the people in the world that I think of that are the, I work a lot with up and coming thought leaders and those who have a message inside of them that they know, like they're not quite where they're supposed to be yet.And there's a gap because they're not radically aligned from the outside looking in though they look like they have their life together. They seem aligned, but they know they're playing small. They know that there's something bigger and this is where radical alignment comes into place because the more aligned we are.The quicker we can manifest what we want and the less distracted that we get and the more confident we are. But it's not even a doing. It's the being ness that attracts what it is that we want to have in there. Certain rituals, practices, tools, and um, processes that I take people through to make sure that they've cleaned up trauma, that they've worked through, pieces that are still like the dust that hasn't quite settled in their life to clean that up.So it's like having a. Like a diamond that has dust on it. You know? It's about the polishing. So it's the polishing. It's like you're already amazing. You're already great, you're already rocking, you're doing all the things that you love. But the polishing is in the radical alignment. So I would compare it to maybe a, um, I'm a Lamborghini.Okay. So there's a lot of people who are Lamborghinis, so they're super sensitive. They're super dialed in when they are radically aligned with who they are and who they're meant to be in the world as far as influence, impact, and all of that. But they're operating, they're giving themselves the fuel. Of a Honda. And the truth is if you bring a Lamborghini up to a regular pump, and I don't have a Lamborghini, but I'm pretty sure that you need different fuel, you need different services. And the truth is when you're a Lamborghini and you're in the car and you're out of alignment just a little bit, there's something that's not quite right in, in the system. It throws the whole thing off, it throws the whole path off, and it can actually take you off track with your full potential. So it's about getting people to know that they have six cylinders, 10 cylinders, whatever, instead of two that they're operating on and it opens up the doors for everything. I love that.I love the idea of radical alignment. I want to know the tools, the different things that you would use to get people aligned. The first. I'm going to assume that you haven't always been this passionate and this like aligned even yourself. Like there's obviously a story that sort of got you there. So I'd love for you to share your journey of getting into radical alignment.Wow. So that's a big question. Everything starts at a young age and it's called soul school, right? So we go through all these obstacles. We have these moments of this is who I am when it's not the truth of who we are. And for me, at a young age, when I was probably six or seven years old, I started to live a dual life.So I would go to school and I was a happy go lucky girl, like friends with everyone. I'm had a hard time learning and staying focused in school. Um, and then I would go home and I had a family member that had an addiction. And because of that addiction, it was this space of lack of certainty when I would come home. There was a space of lack of knowing how things would be and also deep concern for that person in my life. And it was a part of my life that I categorized. And we do this as humans. We categorize moments in time. We categorize parts of our life to disconnect from it because we don't know how to process it.So at around the age of six or so that was happening. So I'd go home and I'd have a totally different experience. I wasn't able to speak my truth. I wasn't able to be a little girl. I had to be my own, you know, my own best friend, my own parents in a lot of ways. And so there was this dual personality, do a life. And so this pattern continued into high school. I was the popular girl, I was friends with everyone at school. But I didn't really get too close to any groups. I was the one that was friends with all the groups because I didn't want to let anyone get too close to me because I didn't want them to see the truth that I had something to hide. And then I was taking on someone else's addiction, someone else's behaviors as my own. There's a lot of deep shame and a lot of deep separation from both of those lives. And so naturally, um, when you live with someone who has an addiction or anything like that, or you know, you're in a relationship with someone who has an addiction, um, you can become codependent, which is trying to fix everyone else's problems or trying to support everyone else too.Avoid dealing and feeling what's going on on a deeper level. And also with that, there's also the people pleaser that comes up. I see this all the time with people, and a lot of that comes back to codependency and also having a family member or somebody in your world that has an addiction and addiction, that behaviors as far as how they act is very different than maybe how addicted or how often they go to whatever that is for them.So again, I was the happy go lucky girl. I had one emotion. And it was, I'm happy all of the time. So that continued into my adult hood and essentially I had more trauma in when I was 19 I was raped and didn't know how to process that. So I categorize that again. And I got really good at checking things off of the list, that list of get married, um, buy a new car, buy a house, go traveling together. All of the things. And again, from the outside looking in, it looked like I was the happiest person. Everyone knew I had the perfect life, the perfect marriage. I had a business that was doing well in a lot of external validation for it, but. I was not connected to myself. I was not connected to my truth. And because of that, I was avoiding dealing with the voice that was trying to come up. That was saying, first of all, every time I've reached a goal, I was saying is this it? Like looking around like, is this really what success is? Is this really what love is? Is this really what life is? And that continued to push me to chase new goals. But I never quite felt like it was, it always felt empty. It's like you're chasing these things. You get there and it's like, now what. Yeah. Right. And so I was chasing these pieces of external validation and essentially I was running away from myself as I was running towards a goal. So I kept feeling that way.And of course it led to burnout and other symptoms. But then there was another voice that was coming up and the voice was saying, there's so much more. Yeah, you are so much more capable and powerful. And you know, and I knew deep down that there was something that I was supposed to step into that because of all of the programming, because of all of the disconnect, the dual life, the categorization. It felt like impossible to even bring it into my conscious reality. And so with that, I started to get a lot of symptoms, a lot of manifestations of disease. Because as you noticed, and I know we've Jan about this before, is anytime our soul is not being honored, it speaks to us through symptoms of disease.And. I manifested depression, massive social anxiety, even though I was in front of about a hundred people a day. I have panic attacks. I manifested auto immune disease and what else? And food sensitivities. Stomach pain. Yeah, totally. And so it's like all of these were the universe or my universe, my body saying pay attention. But the thing is. And, and if you're listening right now, and I'm sure you can relate to Sam, it's like when things come up in our body, it's so easy to be like, Oh, well my mom has this, or it runs in my family, or, Oh, I should take a pill for it. Or, Oh, it's just a part of me. There's like this acceptance of the bullshit in our life. You know what I'm saying? 10. And it's like NSC acceptance of the symptoms and the symptoms is a sign that you were so out of alignment with your soul's calling. And I knew this, I was like teaching wellness. Like I knew you back then too, like I was in that wellness space. I own a yoga business and it was, I was like living and teaching a lot of these things, but I wasn't really owning it and embodying it.So I finally had my wake up call. It wasn't any of the things I said before. But was it like an Elizabeth Gilbert moment? Like, did you have a moment where it's like you hit rock bottom with it and you were just like, the universe just wasn't going to let you keep going? Exactly. That's exactly what happened. And so I, so I had all those symptoms. I pushed him away cause I was like runs in my family, whatever, whatever stories as we do, accepting the bullshit of our symptoms and our life. And um, I remember one day, Sam, and like at that time in my life I had mermaid hair. It was down in my hips and it was kind of my thing. And I was going through my hair one day as us girls do, and I noticed, Oh my gosh, I am missing a huge chunk of hair. And it was like on the top of my head, I had a massive bald spot. It was like the size of the toony. Whoa. Yeah. Completely bald. Completely bald. Like right on the top of my head right there. And I just woke up one day and it was like that. And it wasn't like, you know, when you shave something and you can see like, there's like, there's still hair growth, but you know, maybe it was ripped out or something happens. Like your hair was stressed out. It wasn't breakage. It was totally bald. And, and I remember, I remember the moment getting out my smartphone and, you know, um, having the camera on and going in the mirror.I'm like, what the heck is going on here? And it was this massive bull spot. And this was the moment when the universe was like, okay, Dee, we gave you this, we gave you that. We tried to whisper. We try to take it easy on you. Yeah, there were a million yellow flags, but it's going to take this one bread one.And that's usually what happens. Like yellow flag, yellow flag, yellow flag. And we just keep on driving poorly. So I, um, I was super stubborn, so I had to learn things the hard way. And, um, and then so that happened. And naturally natural instinct go to the doctor, what the heck's going on? Fix me? And the doctor said, Oh, well, it looks like you've developed another autoimmune disease. And I was like, huh? And she's like, yeah, like we can give you some steroids or, you know, some shots in that area of your head. But, um, she's like, you're probably gonna lose all your hair. Yeah. Wow. Okay. That's pretty scary. Yes. And they say also like, just going back to, um, people who go through cancer. Um, one of the biggest fears for women apparently isn't necessarily losing their breasts. It's actually losing their hair. It was like a, it was a big fear of mine. I'm like, Oh my gosh. And then I went home. I got the prescription because I was like, just in case I get home. And I was like, this is not going to be my story. This is not it. And I am going to listen. And I thought of Louise Hay's, I thought of her affirmations.I thought of what our body is trying to tell us. And I don't remember exactly what it said in the book about, you know, a bald spot. But I remember being like, it was like self hatred or something. And I chose to be with that, which is the truth, because my entire life. Based on past trauma and you know, living a dual life and checking things off the list.It was self hatred because I was not connected. To my soul. And so I remember talking to my husband at the time and he was like, so not woo, like black and white, like thought crystals were weird. Right. And I like owned that moment. Wow. In that moment was the moment I changed my entire life and my hair grew back. I started studying Mashama's. I've actually been working with shamans for almost a decade now. I started doing the inner work meditation, and what I learned through that journey is that. First of all, I believe, and I can see it in people. Most people are not even living in their truth. So radical alignment feels like what the F is that? And I get it. I was very disconnected and it took, it took me having that moment. To change it. And I know because my soul told me around this time too, that if I did not change my life, I was going to die of cancer in a year and I didn't have cancer, but my body, my soul was like, you are here to do work and you are not listening to your one and we're going to go after your vanity because you like to pretend that everything is great and you can't hide this.So wake up. Wow. But at that said, you probably look back at that moment and you're so grateful, so much gratitude, because I know that this is like what, six or seven years later, I wouldn't be alive. I would not be on this having this conversation with you if I didn't actually have that wake up call and change because I was so deep in it.And when we're so in something, whether it's a relationship or an area of our life where we have created all of these. You know, um, this checklist and we're, we're so in the role, it's difficult to even know that we're in the role because we've been playing the role our entire life. So. I had to wake up. I had to do the deeper work.It was not always comfortable, but it led me down the path of really understanding universal laws. what our soul's telling us, as well as a bunch of other things, which has led me down this path of radical alignment and and seeing those symptoms in people and helping them break through really quickly. And on that note, I'm heal trauma. As we were talking a little bit about that earlier. Before we jumped on was unhealed trauma, I believe is the root cause of all suffering. Because what happens when we have a trauma? And so I had trauma when I was younger, like coming home and having a, um, a family member, not sure if they were alive and then having to like, not know how to deal with that and, you know, continue just showing up at school and in life and shoving it down.We do that all the time and we don't necessarily need to say we as a whole with humans right. We don't know how to, first of all, identify trauma and essentially it's anything in our life, any imprint that we haven't been able to process. And when we have a trauma, it actually takes us out of our body.Because it's not safe to be in our body. So when we're not in our body, we actually can't be aligned because it's like we're outside of our body. We're not connected to the symptoms. We're not connected to our heart, and we're constantly being triggered by our subconscious from any images, thoughts, body sensations, emotions, and then the energetics of anything that even slightly reminds of us of any of those imprints in our past of the trauma that we haven't fully.Completed because it's like a moment that's frozen in time. So I was triggered all the time, didn't know it, didn't mean that I was upset. It just means I kept taking steps away from my soul. And then I had my big wake up call and had to change my entire life. And in my marriage of eight years, I starting a new business.I started saying yes to adventures all the time. I had a lot of deep work to do and in the realization was the first step. Of course, it's healing trauma. You know, but it's, it's also like what is not me. And when I started to go through that, most of the things, most of the rules that I was living in plane and weren't me.It's not about finding or creating who you are. I like the idea of it, but it's more about who are you not and how is that showing up in your life? That's a really good way to look at it. I feel like it's easy to say, Oh yeah, everything's good, I'm great. Right? But then if you look at the back way, that way, it's like you can get other information about yourself and your situation and your, the people who are in your life or whatever it is, and it's easier to be like, well, is this really me?Is it serving me? Yes or no? And it's easier to let it go. Totally. Yeah. And it's, it's scary too, and, and that's why it's really important. Like, I know for me, when I was going through the process, it took me a few years to actually really take some of those outward steps of creating change. Because first it starts internally and it can be a little messy. But it's like finding the right community, the right support, being around people who get you right. And um, and so that's what led me down this path. And, and I see it in other people and I know that like, we're all here to do something, to create something to experience, love to bring love. And it comes through the foundational piece of being radically aligned. And there's different stages of that. So long story short, I mean. Phones are long. That's good though. Cause you're here, you're living here, you know your radical line life now and you're really holding the torch for other people to do the same. What are a couple of grounded things someone could do and implement in their life that would be really effective in terms of like achieving some alignment, like something that they could do today.I'm just thinking of, first of all, uh, I have a program that's running right now and we're on module two and I want to talk about this because this is exactly what we're sorting out. So I'm, one of the things that I love to do in my life, I do this probably once a year, is I like to create my obligation list. And then also the things that bring me joy. So two lists, and this is a very simple way to see the things that maybe you said yes to that aren't quite aligned. And you go through the obligation list. These are all the things that you feel like you have to do. They have the, I shouldn't be doing this. I have to be doing it, and you do it.You show up for it. But the thing is, because we're so on autopilot all of the time, we don't even know how they feel. So we just do it. And then if we feel like should at the end of the day or we don't feel the way we want to feel or we're not doing the work that we want to do, it's because we haven't taken the time and the space to assess where we're putting our time, energy, and space. So going through the obligation list and saying, okay, who was I when I said yes to this? Who was, I wasn't the person I was a year ago. Is that still aligned with who I am today? Because you know, like we're all evolving all the time, and if we're saying yes and doing things out of obligation based on old version of ourselves, well, it could be actually leaking our energy. It can be pulling us down. So it'd be outdated. Exactly right. And like, I know you sound like you're changing so much every day. So am I. I think about who I was a couple months ago. I'm like, Whoa, I've changed a lot. So it's like it's good to reassess, right? Totally. I love that. Going into the list and looking through them and asking yourself some questions, so number one, when did I say yes to this thing?Who was I like? What were my core belief systems at this time? Because it's important to notice your core belief systems around why you said yes to that thing. And then the next piece is, is it still serving me today? Is it aligned with my values today? And if you don't know what your values are, I highly, highly recommend asking yourself what your top three values are.Because anything that you're saying yes to and you are, is on your obligation list. And I just want to say, having things on the obligation list is not a bad thing. We're all going to have responsibilities and things we show up for, but it's important to know. Is aligned with my values. Does it make me feel the way that I want to feel? And is it supporting my longterm vision goals of who I am and who I meant to be in the world? And if the answer is no, well my friend, it's time to cross that obligation on the list. Maybe have a conversation with someone and say, you know what? I know I said yes to this. Back when and moving forward, um, I have to release my obligation to this and let's sort it out.And that's going to free up so much energy and awareness right there. So what would you say to somebody who's at that point who sees something that they want to cross off, but then there's that fear of actually having that conversation? Because for a lot of people, that conversation. It's like they don't want to hurt feelings, so they don't want to like, you know, it's an uncomfortable thing. So what would you say suggest to do? That's a great question. I was actually thinking about it like, Mmm, people want to, you know what? What do I do with it? Okay. First of all, I think it's really important. Anytime we have anything that we've committed to or bought into of our own, whether it's a belief system, an obligation, or anything else in her life, what is the cost?Okay. What is the cost of not having that conversation? What is the cost of continuing to, um, maybe it's self sabotaging behavior of feeling resentment towards that person or that thing that you're doing. What is the longterm cost. Of continuing to show up in authentically within that relationship or that obligation and the longterm cost for yourself, number one.So what's the longterm cost on your health? On your relationship maybe with that person on, um, you know, the longterm relationship with what you're creating. Like what is the cost? Is it the time? Is it money? Is it your health? Is it your relationships? Because the truth is when we're saying yes to something that doesn't feel good, and we're doing that people pleasing thing, like walking on eggshells with, guess what?We have resentment. And that resentment is showing up in our physical body, our liver, right? Our di, our organs. There's a cost on our health. Our mental health or emotional health, and also we're bringing that negative energy into some of our closest relationships. That could be time that works, stepping away from the things that we love most in, we're probably not showing up as the best version of ourselves. So when you, when you get radically clear and honest and aligned with the costs. I'm saying yes, in that obligation, it's going to be like, Oh my gosh, like I need to have that conversation and there's frameworks to it. It's just like, Hey, so and so like Sam, Hey, Sam. You know, let's play that. Hey, Sam, I know that I'm pro.Let's pretend you're my sister. So, um, let's say that I had an obligation to you and I would, and I've heard this before, you know, I pick up, you know, Sam's kids every and every week, and I hang out with her kids, and that's the time that she gets to spend time with her husband, right? I've heard this before and it's just something I've been doing for years. But you know what? Now I don't have time for this, this, this, this, so perfect example. Hey Sam. I just want to talk to you about, I mean, is that okay? Sure. What's up? Um, well, I really love, uh, taking care of your kids every week. It's been such an honor to do that. They're so much fun. And, um, I said yes to that, you know, a few years ago when I had a lot more time. And I want you to know that I really appreciate the time that we've had together and moving forward. Um, I won't be able to continue to do that. So I'd love to find a way for us to. Shift this to support you, but also for me to have my time back cause I really need my Wednesday nights for this project. So how can we move forward and create that together? Like how much time do you think that you need? Like a few more weeks to sort of a babysitter or something else that's so easy. It just makes it so easy to say yes. Yeah, that's really good. Cause it's really appreciating and seen appreciating the person, but then like looking at coming at it from like a win-win perspective.Totally. And it's the framework of, you know. Brain. It was love. Like, can I speak to you about something? Yeah, of course. Like everyone's open and then the acknowledging of who you were and what you were able to do in the past. So honoring the past, right, and then talking about how moving forward it needs to be different. And that's a very easy framework. But acknowledging the past and who you were when you said yes is really important. Because if you're just like, I can't do it anymore. People were like, well, like I thought you liked doing it. And there's all of these like. Gaps in communication or their stories. Yeah, exactly. So that's what I like to do. And, and um, is that helpful? Does that answer it? Totally. Okay, cool. Totally. And what I love about that too is like even asking the question, cause like you were just saying like if I was just like, Hey Dee, I can't pick up your kids anymore. All of a sudden it's like the defense is up.It's like, well why? Like a million reasons go up there. Whereas if you're like, Hey, can I talk to you for a second? And you come and you're like. Yeah, sure. What's up? It's already like creating a safer container to have that combo. So I love that you just walked us through that entire scenario. Thank you.No problem. And like for you to, like you said, you completely like let go of so many things in order to live radically aligned. Do you struggle with that on a basis, like day to day basis now? Or is it easy for you to just like drop things that aren't serving you. Well at the beginning it was very difficult. It started with really my marriage. That was, that was a big one. And, and it's never easy to end a relationship, especially when there's love there and, and time and all of that. So that was not easy to do, but I knew that it was for my highest good. And. For myself and also for that person, because I know that in the relationship, and this is another thing, I'm going back to the obligation list and that conversation. So let's say that we're going back to me picking up your kids every weekend, hanging out with them every week. Well, if I'm continuing to honor or show up for you, even though I don't feel good about it, it's going to create. Tension in our relationship and it's not going to feel good. You're not going to know why, and I'm going to end up being passive aggressive. That's actually a natural thing with people pleasers. They don't know that they're doing it, but they have passive aggressive tendencies. So when you think about the cost and honoring other people that are involved in these obligations and things that you're letting go of, it's really important to think of what's the cost for them longterm view, playing a role that isn't yours. It's expired. And I really had to look at that with my husband and I was like, you know what? Like. I'm costing him the opportunity to, for him to be with someone who really, really, um, wants to be in it. And it has radically line with him. And I, I'm not that. We didn't have the same values. And so that's why it's so important to your values. So when I left, I knew, yes it was for me, but I also had to really feel into, I want the best for him. And what's the cost longterm for him? Cause he's not getting any younger either. He wants kids and all of those things. And when I could get into that space, it was a selfless releasing. Hmm. To answer your question as far as letting go of things, you know, at first it can be difficult, but every time I do the internal work on myself that I take my clients and people through, I always feel good about it.And the people and the places and the environments that I released, they normally do too. And yeah, there are some people, um, that I've released in the last year, even that I'm like, Oh, this is, this is awkward or difficult because there were people that were close to me. But I will not dishonor my soul. And sometimes that means walking away from things and, and sometimes not having the kind of conversations that, you know, in a perfect situation you would have, but it's about, I will not allow myself to dishonor my soul. And I love that. And that's like where the radical part really comes into it because so many people like will be like 99% in, but then just keep the 1% back. And it doesn't necessarily work that way. It's like you have to be a hundred percent an FPS or an F. No. And that's like essentially what you're saying, you're like. If it's not a hundred percent FES ain't doing it. And, and so with that, with friendships, with relationships, with environments, I have a really tight filtering system of who I let into my inner circle, outer circle, outer, outer circle, et cetera. And it's not saying any one's bad or less than, that's not what I'm saying. It's just about alignment based. People in my inner circle have the same values as me. Um, they can teach me something, I can learn something from them. It doesn't mean that they're like actually my teacher. It means that maybe they're a mirror for me and my bullshit's coming up and I have to clear it.So that's, that's a sole person that I would want in my circle. But there's certain qualities, values, and things that I hold really true to myself in the people that I keep closely and I'm very aware of. Um, what belongs where in my life. And it makes things really easy. Actually. And I love that you keep on bringing up values.I was actually on a call this morning with my friend, my good friend, glow, and we were talking about values in a relationship and I'm like, I had never actually done that with my partner, like asked, what are your three values? Or even like really told him what mine are. So we're actually going to do this exercise where he doesn't know it yet.I told glow and now I'm telling you. And all the ladies who were listening, you should do this with your partners, but like find out, write down what your three values are, find out what your three values are, but then also guests to see what your partner three values would be and then have him do the same or them do the same for you.And then kind of like compare and see even I see the same situation or the same, you know, the same core list of values. I love that. And it's interesting, I was in conversation with a colleague the other day and. And she's been married for a long time and she's like, you know, I was at someone's wedding and, and this man said, you know, the key to happiness longterm is compromise. And, and for me and my being, I was like, Ooh, I don't like that word. I don't like that word. Right? Like by being kind of like tightened. But she's like, no, but I get it. And this woman's been married for a long time and, and she said, you know, it's compromising on the small things but never compromising on your values. And she's like, that's why I've been married for so long. She's like, because we have the same values and we've made an, we've made an agreement, like there might be one or two that are off. She's like, but we never compromise on our values. And that's like why they are so happy in their marriage. Because they can compromise on the small things, but they never compromise on their values. And I feel like a lot of us in our dating relationships or um, our friendships, it's like there's a clash in values and that's where the chaos, that's where the maybe drama or whatever else comes in and it's because values are the foundation of a healthy relationship. Totally agree. Some guys are going to do that.I will see how it goes. Like I'm actually interested, I'm going to make them do it later today. So posted. I wanted to sort of turn the conversation a little bit. We met three years ago at a Tony Robbins fence. The first night we met, we walked on fire together, like legit across hot coals. So fun. And then while I was in New York city, we were in New York city.I went shopping and bought a bunch of really crazy wild outfits because I was going to my first burning man, you know, in a few weeks. And you were like looking and you're like, you know, at the outfits and you're like, I think I'm going to come, and we put it out in the universe. You ended up manifesting a ticket and lo and behold, we had our first burn together.I can't even say it without laughing because it was like honestly one of the most fun experiences of my life, because your first burn is always so memorable. I've been three times, I guess now. But like, it's just like nothing beats the, like the, like sizzle of the first. And so how would you describe Bernie man to anybody curious about it?So first they have to share the whole story. Okay. I mean, not the whole story cause we'd be here for days. So I always ask the universe for signs. And at this point I was getting all these signs to go to burning man, but I was, I was in my bubble a little bit, just got out of my longterm relationship of eight years. And you know, it wasn't super liberated in some ways, and self-express and so Sam, my wild new friend is like, girl, you've got to come to burning man, showing me all the things, and, and then I manifest all these tickets. So I got the ticket in the mail. I said yes. And then I drove down to burning man on my own, and that was an adventure and it's, I'm didn't even know what I was going to wear.I had a bag of like random costumes that my friends gave me, um, got lost in the, uh, on the desert on the way there had a Holy S moments when there was a, a T in the road. There's no. No signs in the middle of the desert, there's a broken gas station to my left. I don't have a map. I'm out of water. Um, prepared spontaneity. You, my friends post-weld on therapist, no cell phone service. And I was like, Oh my gosh, I'm going to die in the desert. Like this is not good. It's like a left and it's wrong way. I might be in trouble. I have half a gas, a tank left if I go right. You know, like all the things were coming up and as soon as I felt the feelings. This police car came up and showed me the way, and it was like this universal sign, like D and like, this is for all of us when we say yes to the not just to the poles, um, things figure themselves out and it's cool to be spontaneous and, and so I get to burning in, don't know where my camp is, and it's in the middle of the night that get you to roll in the Playa desk, which seriously took me two years to get out of my car, by the way.Like, like bro, my haunted Elementor right. I'm like, I had it professionally cleaned. Nope, there's still there. Still apply a desk in there. So you roll in the desk to like get over yourself cause you're going to have dust everywhere for the next two years. And I get there and it's like this massive city, but it's, um, it's just like pops out of nowhere and I can't find my camp. And I get there and I look around and there's people on floating bikes, it looks like, cause there's just, all you see is lights. And I just was like, Oh my gosh, everyone's on drugs. Like, what did I sign up for? And I remember the Lance my trunk grabbing a bottle of wine and my sleeping bag reclining my chair in my car, have you a sip of wine and putting my blanket over my head and be like, what did I, what am I doing?Like, why am I here? Right? Like, this is just, I don't know what I signed up for. My friends sounds crazy. And then the next morning I get up and I realize I'm actually parked outside of the camp that we were at. And I'm like, Hey, is Sam here? And one of the guys is like, Oh, she's in that pod. And I remember opening the pod maybe like 10 inches max.Okay. Sam's sleeping right sparkles all over her face, like in her own, like you know, world. And all of a sudden she goes from lying down like she's dead to full on, standing up doing circles around like this pot. Oh my gosh, Deidre, like the Playa dah, dah, dah, dah, dah. And I remember just being like, what. Is going on here like this is wild.Like what? What is she talking about? She's talking, you were talking so fast had sparkles all over the place. Probably lipstick on different parts of your face from like just sleeping funny. And I remember just being like, what is this? And then you're like, we have to go to the center. We have to go out on the Playa.I'm like, okay. So we got a bike, and the moment we just started rolling out on the Playa, it was like I got high, this wave of being high from the Playa desk, and I just entered into the magic of it all. And so many synchronicities, so many moments of just pure joy, magic, um, burning. All I can say is that burning man is everything that you could ever imagine. It's all of the lessons at once and all of the magic, and it's just, it's just a beautiful community of, of everything. And, and it was the most spiritual experience I've ever had in my life at that point in my life. And it really broke me open to. So many things from that one experience. I can't even get into the stories of it because it's like, it's not even going to do it justice. It's just pure magic and it's not what you think it is. It's what whatever you need, you're going to get from the Playa. And that's what they say. It's like you go to the place of wanting to have an experience, but you're really going to get what you need and the synchronicities that happen there. It's just like there's so many people that go to burning man that are so open and elevated and just like they just.Go into this vortex of like possibility, and there really is no place like it. There is no place like it, and it's so fun to dress up too, and you're just, it's just magic. And it was so fun to share that with you and for you to show me the way. Oh yeah. We had, we had a way, that's for sure. It was fun. But it kind of even goes back to the thing that you were talking about before, like all of the things that don't serve us.It's like letting go and shedding and like burning. Even like it's symbolic cause like the, they, they burned stuff there. They built these beautiful different like monuments and different places and then you celebrate it, you enjoy it. But at the end they burn it down. And it's like the, the, the idea of impermanence, how things are constantly changing.Like enjoy the moment. But there's a moment when everything is going to be dust. So it just like, it's really symbolic on such deep levels of life. I love that. It actually, um, yeah, I almost feel emotional about that because any time that we cling on to something, and this is human behavior, when we cling onto something and we're like, I identify as this, this is me, and, and you know, we could talk about my marriage or whatever's going on in my life or your life or anyone's life, but anytime we hold on to something. We're not actually in the moment anymore. And so I love that. If the burden, it's also the purification of, of the soul, it's the letting go, right? And it's just a beautiful way of honoring your past. So, um, I think there's a lot, probably why we burn, you know, letters that we never, I ended up giving to people. And it's about honoring, releasing, and, and being in that moment. And I remember peeing at the burn with you, Sam, and us just being dressed like, I don't know, you were like a mermaid or something with your purple hair. I love way cause like for me it's like that's my thing. I'd love wearing crazy color hair. It's just so fun. Yeah. I could see you having permanent purple hair, by the way. I think I'm like bad ass just putting it out there. I support it if you choose to do it or the wig. But I remember just watching the burn with you, like the big burn on the last night and just eyes wide open. Whoa, Whoa. Oh my gosh. It's such a immersive experience and it's something like that. I've always been experiential person, and so I say yes to things based on what feels right in the moment I'm like, okay, I have a pull. I'm going to go talk. That person do that thing. It's all of the magic in life can only be experienced. It can't be thought about. And so it's about saying yes rather than saying, well, trying to figure it out. So every time that I've said yes to something, based on a feeling, it's all turned into magic. And burning man was a huge piece of that. So everyone should go to burning man. Everyone should go to Bernie. Man. I remember when we were there, actually, I was like one of the night exhibits, and I guess I was like putting like my bike chain on, or I was doing something to my bike and I was looking down.I looked up and I saw your face. It was just like, like almost like a deer in headlights staring out, and then I'm like, what is that? You're like, Oh my gosh, Gerard Butler was just there and he smiled at you. And then I turned around to see him, but then he was gone. Was it George Butler? Yeah. You were like, you're like deep, go talk to him.Go talk to him. He was looking over it. I was like, I was too cool. I was like, no, I didn't even though, no, I didn't. Yeah. I'm like, when I looked, he was already gone and then I was like, so tell us, cause he like smiled at you. Yeah. I was like, I'm not going to go talk to him. I'm too cool anyways that everyone should go to burning man.It is like a once in a lifetime experience. It's like another world. And if you are curious, Google it right now and be like amazed by, it's like mad, mad max almost meets, I don't even know what else. A different planet. It's not earth. It's definitely not earth. Four texts into another dimension. We're just going to leave it at that.On that note, is there anything else that you want to share? I could share like a message? Is that what you'd like me to share? Sam? Yeah. So the message is, is that if you are going through anything right now that isn't feeling good, definitely I invite you to do that. You know, assessment, the joy and not the joy, but the obligation assessment, cause that's super bad ass can change your life. And the next piece is if you're looking to do more of that and find out what the gap is, what is in the way of you having and being and living the life that you deep down want to experience. I have a freebie on my website that I'm happy to and you over to. It's 24 categories of life. Oh, where you are now, where you want to be, and really identifying exactly what's in the way so that you can show up more powerfully for that. And I believe there's also a video series with it that can help you move through that. So you can go run over to my website, we can drop the link below it radically aligned.com and. It's one of the most powerful tools that I've used on myself and that a lot of the people that I work with do, and, and, and yeah.Just the question. This is, this is the quote that I love. The question is not whether or not you are here to do great things. We're all here to do great things. The question is, are you ready to wake up to the truth of who you are and who you're meant to be? Because your soul is infinite. It's joy, it's love, it's abundance, it's connection. It's all of the things that you could ever imagine. Anything or anyone that tells you you are not that. Is not like is not playing in your magic. It's not honoring you. And it's important for you to remember who you are by plugging in to people, to podcasts like this, hanging out with Sam, Sam's amazing and plugging into the magic of life, because that's where everything great happens and it cannot be process. It has to be experienced. So. Jumping into those experiences saying, yes, and I know that you have a Morocco trip coming up sometime soon, and I think that's pure magic. So, um, that would be an experience. If you feel the pull to say yes to, I want to be there, you'll be there. We'll be there in Morocco some point soon, once this pool.Pandemics over. Yes, totally. But on that note, thank you so much my dear. I thank you for doing this. Thanks for having me. This is so fun. And, and going back to memory Lane's fun with you, Sam.ar. I love, I love your brand. I don't remember what I was meditating at, but I was at a friend and Rashard seminar and a bird pooped on my shoulder. So I'm, one of the things that I love to do in my life, I do th

Welcome to the show, how are you? James; I kind of feel like a rock star right now after that intro. Annie: You kind of are a rock star. James: Yeah, well, tell my kids that one. Jen: We also get a lot of referrals from you so thank you. James: Oh you’re very welcome, you know- Jen: A ton of women that said they found us through you. James: We have like minded followers I would say. Annie: Yes. We, James and Healthy Habits Happy Mom’s which is what Balance365 was before it became Balance365 go way back so we’ve been pals for a while and Jen and James, you guys met, I think before James and I met, how did you two meet? Jen: In Vancouver. Oh, like, we just met online, small world as we talked about, when you are not shucking B.S. to people and then we met up in Vancouver and we had coffee which was awesome. James: Yeah, that’s right, I was in Vancouver for a conference. So we got to do the, you know, going from being internet friends to real life friends which is always exciting when that happens, so high five! Annie: Yeah and I met James when I went to the fitness summit in Kansas City many years ago, I mean, gosh, that was probably 3 or 4 years ago I suppose but it was, like, one of those whispers in the lobby like, “That’s James Fell.” James: Don’t make it weird, Annie. Annie: That’s what the women were whispering in my ear and I’m like “Oh, OK, OK.” It was fun to have a couple of drinks and since then our relationship with our company and you have fostered and we are excited to bring you on because you have a new book coming out. This is actually your second book, second to Lose It Right, is that correct? James: That’s correct! Annie: It comes out January 2nd and I told- James: January 22nd. Annie: Oh, sorry, January 22nd and I told you before we started this that we have labeled our podcast as clean, which means it doesn’t have any explicit lyrics and the title of this book is called the Holy S. Moment and that’s what we’re going to call it for this podcast because we know we have people listening with little ears within earshot but you can probably imagine what the title of that book is and I just have to say it’s not actually out in print yet, is it? James: No, no, we’re, so January 22nd, so as of recording right now we’re 6 days away, so it depends on when you publish this. Annie: So by the time it’s released, this episode is released they’ll be able to find it, where can they find it? James: Anywhere, so it’s being published by St Martin’s Press in the United States and Canada and if you have any listeners in the U.K. Harper Collins is the publisher there so this is this is my 1st international released book. My 1st book Lose It Right was just published in Canada. Annie: That’s exciting, do you feel good about it? James: Oh yeah, I’m really stoked. So yeah, they can find it in any bookstore, any platform, there’s an audio recording too so if people don’t hate my voice, I’m the one that did the narration for the audio. Annie: I love it when authors do that. Jen: I do too. You really feel connected to that author. James: Yeah, I love it too because they paid me to do it. Annie: Winning and the cover of the book, unless it’s changed, because you were kind enough to share the digital format with us, the cover has a lightning bolt on it, right? James: Yes, it does. Annie: And I don’t know if you can see that but I’ve got a big old tattoo on my trap so, you know, I feel like it was clearly, this was a book that was meant to be in my house. James: Annie Brees, me and Harry Potter are all big on lightning. Annie: Except I’ve never seen Harry Potter, I’ve never read Harry Potter- Lauren: What? Annie: I know nothing about. I know. James: OK, you just lost some fans. Lauren: I’m sorry. I’m not cool. Annie: Okay, I just wanted to get this out too because on page 6 it just says “hi mom” and I was like- Jen: Oh, that is so sweet. Annie: So you definitely earn some bonus points but what I want to talk about is, if you know us, you know that the 3 of us are all about slow and sustainable change but you actually wrote this book because you found yourself as a coach encouraging slow and steady change but that actually hadn’t reflected your experience in how you forever changed your life. Would you mind sharing the story about the moment and the quote that you think shifted for you? James: Yeah, so before I get into that briefly, like, when it comes to say health and fitness, I don’t mean, you know, jump into your first session with Attila the trainer and go hard core and wreck your self on day one. When it comes to the the change of changing one’s body, you still need to be rational and don’t destroy yourself but the change that I’m talking about is the way that you’re motivated, that quite often we talk about motivation as a form of baby steps, being a tortoise not a hare as well, you slowly, step by step drag, yourself over a motivational tipping point developing, you know, habits that become sticky and the reality is that there’s a lot of people that don’t do it that way. They go from 0 to 100 miles an hour in a moment and they stay that way because of some transformative life changing event that just wakes up a part of their brain where they achieve a new purpose in life that endlessly and vigorously drives them forward. So that’s what the book is about is the science of that event and so there’s the, you know, all the scientific aspect but there’s also a lot of anecdotal stories that run the gamut of, you know, relationships and career change and battling addiction but also, yes, there are some weight loss stories in there as well but to my personal, the first big transformative experience for me happened when I was about 22 years old and I was in university and I’d actually gotten a letter that said, this isn’t verbatim but it boils down to “Your grades suck, we’re kicking you out” and I was, you know, I was in debt, you know, the credit card companies were calling. And I wasn’t looking after my health, I was drinking too much and and I was in a state of despair and part of that had to do with my girlfriend was that she was a very driven woman, straight A student, destined for med school and I knew that if I got kicked out of school and I do not say this to ever speak ill of her but I knew if I got kicked out of school that it was going to be the beginning of the end, that, you know, she wasn’t going to stay with a guy that was a drunken dropout who was letting his health go to hell and so I was, I was really kind of freaked out about what am I going to do and so I’m reading the university newspaper and there was this section that’s like there classified ads called 3 lines free and it’s, you know, a mixed bag of things from quotes and witticisms and proclamations of undying love or temporary lust or whatever and there was a quote in there from of all people Joan Baez the folk singer and the quote read “Action is the antidote to despair.” And I read that and it didn’t hit me immediately but it’s the 1st thing was I realize that, you know what, all these problems that I have can be fixed via action. If I get down to get to work I can fix this stuff and that was the first little wake up and then the next part that hit me bigger was the realization that I had been pretty lazy my entire life. I’ve been skating turned on cruise control, not really putting much effort into anything, these problems that I was experiencing were of my own doing. You people know me that I’m not one of those guys that say “Oh, just suck it up” and you know, I realize that there are people that, you know, life is garbage sandwich and it’s not their own doing but my this was my fault. I had dug this hole myself and only I had the ability to dig my way out and and so there was that realization that I’ve been really lazy and I was actually putting effort into being lazy by, you know, the mental gymnastics it took to, you know, shirk my responsibilities each day and that was when my brain woke up in an instant where I said, “If I just put effort in a positive way, if I just got down and started working, I could fix all this” and that’s the way that these life changing epiphanies work is that they are there a big picture concept, they’re fuzzy, they’re not usually very concrete. The concrete action plan comes afterward, after you have the event but the event happened was like, “If I just work I’ll fix everything” and in that moment I experienced what’s known in Psychology of behavior change circles as dramatic relief, where suddenly you see the light at the end of the tunnel, all the problems haven’t gone anywhere, still there but you know you’re going to fix them and you know that the light is there, you can see it and you’re going to race toward it and everything’s going to be OK. And from that moment, in that instant, I was a changed man. Jen: Wow. James: I got 2 master’s degrees. I didn’t flunk out, I went on and got 2 master’s degrees, oh and that woman, the girlfriend, we’ve been together for almost 30 years now and so yeah, I told you she was the one and you know, got in shape, got out of debt all that good stuff, I don’t brag. Annie: I don’t want to spoil, I didn’t want to spoil it for everyone but when I was reading this part about your, like, this moment that you were having reading that quote I was like “Did he do it?” and he did! And that’s, oh my gosh, that’s so sweet. But I love that realization that you said, I was in this position because I had put myself there and while that can maybe feel a little like, “I did this to myself” it can also feel like that “I can get myself out” like the flip side of that coin is, “Yeah, I put myself here but also I can get myself out” and that’s really like encouraging and empowering I think. Jen: I got goosebumps and I don’t know if you can see that on camera but my hair is standing on end. So I see that shift with some of our Balance365 members sometimes and I agree some people get a garbage sandwich but it is so important to reflect on our contribution to where we’re at in life. I believe that wholeheartedly that it is so important to reflect on that. There are obviously things that were out of your control but there are also things that you have done and you know, for this is a very complex topic but especially, you know, just the different members we have in the different lives they come from but I feel like that can be such a light bulb or that lightning bolt they need to go, you know, maybe they can’t change everything about their life but maybe they have more control than they have let themselves believe, leading out to that moment. James: And the thing is that there’s focal changes and then there’s global changes, what I experienced was largely a global change, that I just decided that it wasn’t that I was going to get in shape or that I was going to stop flunking out of school, I was going to fix everything and so that was a global change. Other people had these focal changes, like the example in chapter one of Chuck Gross, who had started with his weight because he weighed over 400 pounds and that was a life changing epiphany after having struggled and tried and failed to lose weight many times, he had this transformative experience and that he knew it was going to work and the direct quote from Chuck was “I didn’t have to struggle with my motivation. It came built in.” And he lost over 200 pounds and has kept it off for more than a decade but the interesting thing there is that these experiences often have cascading effects where afterwards, he ended up, he went back to school and he was a straight A student, he went through a personality shift where he went from very introverted to, you know, more confident and more extroverted, it was better for his relationship and it just had a lot of other positive impacts throughout his life. Jen: What about, something on the other end of the scale, I was listening to a podcast the other day with a therapist and she was talking about the high failure rate of relationships after somebody has weight loss surgery and they didn’t dig into that but it relates back to what we’re trying but here is because a lot of people, it’s not about the weight loss, it’s about the identity change that they have because of that huge event and I can also see it going the other way, that, I mean, this happens all the time in relationships, I guess, you have people go through identity shifts throughout their life and it can also affect your relationship negatively. And so I can see it also, you know, not that anyone should stop themselves from changing but it’s just to show this is radical, right, it’s radical what happens to people and this cascading effect that you’re talking about, it can affect, we have in Balance365 these women that go on, like, one woman has founded a feminist nonprofit in Vancouver and is building this huge community and she talks about how it was Balance365 that just, it just was that moment, right, everything changed from there and it’s just interesting to see and we’ve had women applying for jobs they didn’t think they were qualified for and we’ve had women leave their husbands, we’ve had, you know, it’s just that radical personal growth shift that just, yeah, cascades everywhere. James: Well the research you’re talking about with weight loss surgery, of which I am very supportive, I’ve written an article about how I think that if people that think that that is the right decision for them I’m the last person that would ever shame someone for doing so because the research shows that it can be quite effective but I’m not aware of and I’m not denying it, I’m just saying that I can’t speak to that. Jen: Right. James: However, in these instances I didn’t interview anyone for the book that had undergone very bariatric surgery but there were a few people that had experienced significant weight loss and as well as gone through many other changes and the one theme that I noticed is that what we’re talking about is, yes, there’s an identity shift, yes, there’s a value shift, that’s what makes it effortless. There’s the whole, it refers to Roky, social psychologist Milton Roky teaches model of personality which is, like, the whole, you know, ogres are like onions. Well, people are like onions, too. We’ve got our actions and behaviors at the extra layer which is, if you focus just on changing behavior, that’s why you need to be slow and steady because you’re in conflict with those more internal layers of your values and your identity, whereas if you go through an identity shift and a shift in values, the outer layers just sync up effortlessly which is what happened with Chuck Gross. He went through a rapid identity and values shift which just brought his actions and behaviors into line immediately. But so here’s the thing that, yes, this entire book is about a shift in identity and values which sounds scary. So this is anecdotes, not data but the examples in the book, many of these people were in relationships when they went through this dramatic shift, those relationships got better. Jen: In the examples in your book. James: And I can posit a hypothesis as to why that happens, which is that it’s actually and there’s even some philosophy in there and psychology is that this is not a false construct that you’re creating. When you go through something like this, it’s more like the current identity that you’re letting reign is the fake one, that’s the one that is, you feel that you need to survive each day because of societal pressures and pressures of, you know, maybe toxic people in your life or your job or whatever else is going on that this is the thing that, you know, it can be referred to as the despised self that you’re letting rule your life and then all of a sudden, the true self that, this is the person you’ve been yearning to be your entire life, is suddenly let loose. It’s not invented out of thin air, it was there deep down and it was like every little movie that you watched where there was a hero that did something that impressed you or a story that you read that you say “I wish I could be that brave” or all these little things are tiny bits of data that get lodged in your unconscious that that have the ability to coalesce in a profound way in a moment. So when you go through this type of identity change, this is not slow and steady, it’s such a dramatic emotional event that it’s something where it’s unleashed, it’s like, it’s like a volcano where the magma has been bubbling under the surface, building for years and then all of sudden kerblewy, it explodes. That’s why it’s a, it’s a holy s. moment because you have this sudden realisation and because and when we look at our relationships with other people that when you fall in love with someone, you have a tendency to idealize them and you’re falling in love with what you, the vision you have of them as their best self. You see, you know, they’re not always that way but when you see the best in them, you have a tendency to overlook the bad parts the parts that annoy you, hopefully. I know my wife does it with me all the time. Then when that real true best self comes to the surface and is allowed to let reign, it’s, like, yeah, the other member of that relationship is very welcoming of that, so I’m not saying it’s a guarantee, I’m not saying it’s going to work that way every time but it sounds good, they said. Jen: James, what do you think of this, all of this in terms of dieting. So in our community, really, what we have founded everything on is that dieting does not work and a lot, I mean, it doesn’t work for the majority of people and what happens with women is that dieting becomes a part of our identity over time, so you are or losing weight or maybe you’ll tell me, I’m not using the correct scientific terms for all of this but it may feel like part of our identity. It is so ingrained in us to be basically defining our self-worth based on our ability to lose weight or at least trying to lose weight makes us feel worthy and we get, you know, many pats on the head for it as women when we’re doing that. I would say men probably experience that as well and so feel like when women join Balance365, when we help give them, you know, turn the light on a little bit and they join Balance365 and they realize dieting doesn’t work, and for some of them it happens like in “Zing! This does not work. This I have been doing for 25 years does not work” or sometimes it happens slowly, it’s like, “OK, maybe it doesn’t work” but then they, like, come back, you know, and then maybe they pull back from us a little and go, “Well, I’m just going to try one more diet, just to double check” and then would you say that’s a change in identity happening? James: Absolutely and I think you really nailed it, that a lot of people, so that’s that is, sort of a despised self identity that is being allowed to flourish because their values are the approval of other people or living up to some toxic ideal that you see in an air brushed model on a cover of a magazine and looking at food as something that, you know, what they consume is something that they need to suffer through and this is, the thing about these type of events is the whole goal is to remove suffering, when you focus strictly on behavior change, that’s why the tortoise’s preached over the hare because if you change too much all at once, the amount of suffering you experience is quite high because it’s at odds with the more internal layers. And that’s why they say baby steps is because you’re trying to minimize the discomfort until it gets to the point where you just kind of get used to it and you come to tolerate it and yeah, you know those things can work but we all know that the failure rates are pretty high and what can be a much more positive shift in identity is having self compassion, realizing that you are a fallible human being and that food is something that is supposed to be enjoyable and nourishing and necessary for life and that you can stop caring so much about what other people think and worrying more about the way that you, what you think about yourself. And how you feel about the way you look in the mirror and how you feel physically, like, when you wake up each morning and you know hopefully bounce out of bed and then looking at food as something that nourishes you and because you have compassion for yourself that you want to feed yourself in a healthy and nourishing way and that you want to exercise because it’s good for you and it’s enjoyable and it’s OK to have some vanity goals but if vanity is your overrunning motivator I’ve never seen that work out well. Yeah, you know, for many years I had a shirtless photo of me on my website. And you know, I’m wearing the short sleeved t-shirt- Jen: Snug fit. James: And I think it’s OK to have some of those motivations but you also need to think about the, you know, I’m never going to be as buff as the next guy, I’m never going to be as ripped as the next guy but that’s OK because my wife likes the way I look, I like the way I look and I like running, I like lifting weights, I like riding my bike, I like fueling appropriately, I like the way I feel when I eat mostly healthy food, I like the way I feel when I don’t drink very much, all those types of things, that’s part of my identity, that just being kind of Zen about this whole thing. You know, just do the best you can, enjoy your life, enjoy your food, enjoy your exercise, that’s identity and values right there and that’s a positive one as opposed to all “Oh my God, I’ve got this flab from Christmas” which I totally do and you know, that’s a positive shift that people can make because they hear me talking about it, they hear other people talking about it, they read it and this type of information percolates in your brain and maybe one day it bursts through the surface and you say, “That’s who I am.” Lauren: Can I ask a question before we kind of move on or switch gears? When you were telling your story, I kind of had this realization that I listen to a lot of podcasts and there’s always people, you know, being interviewed and telling their stories and it’s usually someone who has accomplished something or done something and a lot of times you’ll hear them have that Holy S. Moment, you know, whether it’s, you know, they had a big realization or whatever and I am realizing that a lot of times, it’s kind of like they’re, it’s a bad moment, right, like, they’re kind of in a low place when they have that moment, is that and I know you have a lot of examples in the book, is that true for all of them or is there another way you can kind of come to that moment? James: It’s common but it’s not the law so, you know, in my example when I talked about the one when I was flunking out of school, yeah, the whole action is the antidote to despair quote, I was in a state of despair so that’s one of the reasons why it really spoke to me. Despair is not same thing as depression, just so we’re clear. And but and so what happens with a lot of people, one example is called crystallisation of discontent which is a psychological term which refers to discontent is, you know, say there’s one problem that’s bugging you and it’s not that big of a deal by itself you’re like, “Yeah, whatever, I can live with that. Crystallization is when you look at all the other little problems and the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts where they suddenly crystallize all together and you reach a point where you’re like “OK enough of this, you know, we’ve got to go in a new direction because this is just not working for me anymore.” So that’s an important shift people can make. Then going deeper, we also have the breaking point, which we see quite often with addiction where people are in a horrible state and they realize that they just can’t do it that way anymore and they’ve got to go in a different direction and it is very common for people battling addiction where one day they just “No, this is it, never again” and they’re done and they are done so that’s another way but on the other end of the spectrum, we also have the good to great mentality which is and I’m stealing that from a book of the same name by Jim Collins and and the book is actually about corporate change where corporations want to go from being good at something to being great but it actually, there’s a lot of good stuff in that book that applies to people as well and what it is is someone, you know, life is pretty peachy, things are going along OK, you know, it could be better but then suddenly a quest enters your mind, like, “I gotta do this” where where it’s not like you want to be great for greatness sake, you have discovered something that makes you want to try to create it. And you know, for me people who have that big life changing event often have more later on clarifying epiphanies and for me it was being a writer that I had reached the age of 40 and I had an MBA, I had a successful business career and I didn’t hate my job but I did not love it and I knew that writing was something that I love to do and I realized life was too short to spend the majority of my waking hours doing something that I wasn’t really passionate about and I was going to give it my very best effort in order to make a career out of this and so that was a, life was good and then I became a writer and it became great. Maybe not quite financially great right away. But trust me, you know, I just turned 50 last year and my forties were awesome because I decided to become a writer and my fifties are looking to be even better. Lauren: Right, that’s good to know, you know, you can have these epiphanies without being at like rock bottom. Annie: I would just like to say that James pretty much just described my last year of therapy in like 15 seconds. Because we actually have a section of our program called The Story of You which is where we help members get clear on their values and I think Old Annie, Annie 2 years ago would have just poo-pooed that, like, “Why does this even matter, I just want to lose weight, I just want to build muscle, I just want to, you know, run this or lift this or whatever, like, I want to look a certain way or I want to feel a certain way, why does my values even matter?” and you wrote in a blog post that you encourage people to spend less time worrying about the exertion of will and engaging in continual resistance and suffering and forcing yourself to do what you really would rather not and spend some quality time on examining who you really are deep down and you encourage people to, like, really look at their values, like, what really matters to you and you’ve found in your book evidence that supports that that will help, as you said with that one gentleman that he didn’t have to rely on willpower because this is just what he wanted, like this is was him. This is what he wanted and so we hear it from a lot of women that they feel like they need more willpower and more self control and you’ve dug into self self control, self love and willpower in your book and on your blog post and as you know, the fitness industry loves this like “No excuses, just shut up and do it, grind through it.” So after looking at your work in the book and knowing you and knowing your personal and professional experience, what do you think about that? I mean do you want to expand on that barfy noise? James: There was a lot of research in the book debunking the whole myth of willpower and seeing it as a limited resource that you can strengthen and you just gotta suck it up, we know it doesn’t work, people have been told to suck it up forever, there’s research showing that the efforts to to strengthen willpower are futile. There’s more research in the book that people who do use what they call grit, that you just tough it out no matter what even though you hate what you’re doing, it’s actually physically damaging, it has negative cardio metabolic effects as well as negative effects on I think the telemores which has to do with your life expectancy and so yeah, it’s and it’s just not fun. Willpower and grit and powering through all imply suffering and I just, we don’t want to suffer, we seek to avoid it. Our entire evolution as a species has been about trying to find ways to make things more comfortable for us so instead a person’s ability to do things, like, I will get up and put on a ridiculous amount of layers of clothes to go out for a 6 mile run in minus 30 and it’s not because, you know, I don’t hate doing it, I actually feel a sense of accomplishment, like, it’s kind of cool for me knowing, “Hey, I’m out doing something that other people think is crazy” and so that’s one of the things that motivates me to do it is that it’s, you know, it’s just I get a bit of a an excitement out of it even though, yes, it’s really cold out there and I’m kind of slow because I’m trudging through snow but it’s just, it’s this neat little sense of accomplishment and also a shower after a run at minus 30 feels really, really good. Jen: And I’m over here like, “No way.'” It brings me zero joy to do something like that. James: So that’s not, I’m not suffering. Jen: Right. James: All that being said and I’m really hoping this book takes off because if it does, not only will I feel validated which I kind of need, then I want to write a sequel about what happens after the holy S. Moment and you know, how do you keep snowballing the success from it and I think that doesn’t rule out discipline, so discipline is different from willpower. Discipline is about things, like, you know, getting, formulating routines that you stick to even though you don’t want to and yes, there are days that I don’t feel like running but you know, I just, you know, I figure I’m still a runner, that’s who I am and I don’t always succeed but there other times when I don’t want to but I’m going to do it anyway and you make yourself do it and then you get out there and yeah, maybe the first kilometer and sorry for the Americans that are listening, the first kilometers kind of drag but then you get into it and after it’s like, “Yeah, I’m really glad I did that” so there’s it’s not like everything is a joyous “Oh yeah, I can’t wait to do this.” But it’s just, it’s because it’s who you are, it’s not that big of a deal. Jen: Annie just talked about this in a workshop last night that we did for our members around exercise, you know, it’s like we do encourage people to find exercise they enjoy or can tolerate and Annie just said “Look, it’s not always going to be super fun, you’re not always going to be like I can’t wait to get to the gym but even if you can tolerate that exercise and afterwards feel accomplished and glad you went” Annie: Then, yeah, there’s like this like acclimating period for a lot of people that aren’t super jazzed about exercise or movement that it’s like they kind of just have to get over that hump of maybe they’re a little bit sore or they’re getting into a new routine, they’re like, I think of it as like snowplows, you know, like or you’re going through a gravel road, like the first time you go through like fresh gravel it’s like a little bit wonky and then you keep going through and you keep, like, grinding those, like, pathways and-“ James: Grind isn’t a good word to use, we don’t want to be in a rut. Lauren: No. Annie: But eventually, the pathway is a little bit smoother and you have less resistance but initially, when you’re getting going or maybe you’re trying something new, you’re learning a new skill, it’s not all fun and there’s certainly days where you’re just tired and you just don’t want to do it for whatever reason. James: And sometimes you do and that’s great and other times you don’t, you know, don’t beat yourself up over it because you know, tomorrow’s another day and one of the things that I want to be clear about is that, you know, not throw out the tortoise approach to this because if you think about motivation as, like, a mountain and at the base of the mountain that is 0 motivation to do the thing. And then the peak of the mountain is absolute 100 percent motivation to do everything associated with this goal with inspired vigor. Well, if you’re down at the base of the mountain, you don’t just hang out there and wait for sudden inspiration to arrive and Star Trek transporter your butt all the way up to the top. That can happen, sometimes it does, that’s what happened with Chuck but it doesn’t always work. You increase your odds of success if you start to hike awhile and you do those baby steps, because what it does is that it opens up new experiences to you. It gets you thinking because this is something that happens in the brain and if you are having these new experiences and starting to think about this and examining yourself and how you feel about it and looking at your, this is an emotional experience and that’s what happened for me is I talked about the, you know, the change in school and the change and you know, getting out of debt, all that kind of stuff. I didn’t get in shape right away, that came 2 or 3 years later when I finished my undergraduate degree, stuff was really busy with school and I was really busy with working to pay off my debts and those kind of things and I didn’t do anything about my body because I felt like I didn’t have time and then as soon as I finished my degree I looked in the mirror and said “Wow, I got kind of heavy. Maybe I should do some about that.” That became my next mission, I’d learned how to work hard but it doesn’t mean that I liked it. I started going to the gym and I did not like it one bit and it was after about 2 months that I was, you know, just forcing myself to go because I knew that this was something that I had to do and I was powering through on that grit and that willpower and I came close to quitting so many times and I felt like I was losing no weight whatsoever and then, so I was doing that that slow hike up the mountain of motivation and then one day I’m walking out of the gym after a couple months and the person at the front desk said “Did you have a good workout?” and I stopped and I thought about that for a moment and I said to myself, “Well, it didn’t totally suck” and I thought “It used to totally suck” and hopefully we can say suck on your podcast. Jen: Yes. Annie: Yes. James: OK, so it went from totally sucking to not totally sucking and I thought, well, if I could evolve from it toward it not sucking then one day I could learn to love it and in that moment, I wouldn’t say that I transformed into loving it but I did make a life altering decision that said “OK. One day I can learn how to love that” so therefore, I’m going to keep doing it until I die and that was 25 years ago still going so, go me! Jen: There are a lot of aspects that suck about running a business, it’s coming together but ultimately when you’re, you know, values, you know wake up in the morning and being safe, having financial autonomy is so so important to me, I will, we will show up and we will do those sucky things because ultimately our value of having financial autonomy overrides the pain of doing those sucky things. James: Yeah and it’s, you know, the alternative is is worse, right. Jen: Right, is way worse, yes. Annie: I think that that’s an important point that I hope our listeners grab, especially, you know, I’m talking about exercise because I’m a trainer but so often people think that they love something so then they’ll do it and that’s how you do more things, right, you have to love it first but like you just described, you can actually do something, get a little bit better at it and that cultivates a sense of love or enjoyment, so you can, in essence, learn to love something, like, you learn to love exercise and I think that that’s what so many women who don’t naturally love exercise like I do, I get it Jen and Lauren have expressed that they don’t share their passion for exercise like I do all the time. But that that doesn’t mean that they’re just out of luck. James: And for the analogy that I would use to describe it is that when you take this approach hiking up that mountain and then waiting for sudden inspiration to move you much further up the mountain, you know, dramatically increase your motivation all of a sudden, I refer to it as acting like a tortoise but thinking like a hare and so people need to be receptive to the possibility of this sudden gaining motivation and if they’re more receptive to it, if they’re more mindful of it happening, it dramatically increases the likelihood of it taking place. Annie: I like that, that’s really good. Jen: One of our members, her husband’s in the Army and she had this really good saying on one of our podcasts around motivation and behavior change and self-awareness, I guess, sometimes you need to know when to advance and when you just need to hold the line and I feel like that was a real, like, that’s kind of the hare and the tortoise thing, right, like you just, sometimes you have an opportunity in your life to advance and you need to take it. Motivation isn’t bad, it’s just knowing, yeah. James: Something interesting happened with me, so I was talking about how new experiences and an openness to new ideas that wake up a part of your brain that wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t gone out and tried that thing, that’s what absolutely happened to me with running. So when I decided to take up running, so I’d lost a fair bit of weight with weight lifting and dietary changes and then I decided, well, I want to lose more and this was before Facebook, so I actually knew that that running was good for weight loss, that it could work because I hadn’t bought into all the fit pros saying “No, cardio makes you fat.” So I decided that for me that running would be a good choice and that it would also be not just good for weight loss but just good for my health, it’s good for organ health and all that kind of stuff and so I decided to start doing it and I was terrible at it and it was painful but I just started it, really short distances and gradually built myself up and I was just thinking about the outcome, like, this is good for losing weight, this is good for my health, that’s why I’m doing it and something completely unexpected happened was that that being a writer and being a person that likes to create stories and tell himself stories is that became the most creative part of my day was when I go for a run my best ideas come to me, either when I’m running or going for a bike ride and I just love the free association that I get to do. I’m away from technology, you know, I don’t have my phone with me or anything like that and it gives me that time alone in my head that, you know, that I just didn’t realize how much I craved that. And it makes such a big difference to me that that was really what I fell in love with, that if I hadn’t actually tried running I never would have known that that was the thing that I needed. Annie: Yeah, that’s really pretty, that’s a beautiful story. Lauren: That’s really pretty. Jen: James, can I get your take on another behavior we see quite often? James; Sure. Jen: So what happens very often in our community when women have the epiphany that diets don’t work and they’ve been living for years and years under a very restrictive way of living, they have their pendulum swing out the other way so many of our members talk about, after they join Balance365 they overeat, go swing into this period of eating all the things that they have denied themselves for so many years and that usually comes with weight gain and a lot of them say it became a necessary part of the process for them in order to have their pendulum swing back to center and be able to be more objective and balanced in their approach. What is your, do you think it’s necessary and or do you, is there any science or anything that you know of to explain that or what’s your take on it? James: So, I mean, I, the first caveat is that I’m not actually a psychologist. Jen: Right. James: I interviewed a whole bunch of psychologists for the book and we didn’t specifically get into that type of stuff. I would say that if you are hearing a lot of people saying that that was necessary for them and that it worked, then it sounds like there’s got to be something to it. For me, like I always would like to say err on the side of caution a little bit but you’ve got to do what you gotta do. Jen: Right. James: If you have been punishing yourself this much for so long and you reach this breaking point and you just got to go in another direction where you’re like “OK, I’m sorry but this is, I just need a break” and that what happens then, then that makes sense to me but at the same time, you need to keep something in the back your mind that says “This is temporary, that this is a reset” because you don’t want to go off the rails, right? You don’t you don’t want to never stop because and it’s not about shaming people for their body weight but just being concerned for their health and you being concerned about your own health and how you’re feeling and that as long as you realize that this is a temporary reset and that it’s part of finding a mentally and physically healthier way to move forward it sounds OK to me but- Jen: Right. James: Just realize, OK, how far does that pendulum need to swing the other way before it comes back and don’t go beyond what’s necessary? So just little bit of caution. Jen: We have to have these come to Jesus talks with our members often on how far that pendulum has swung out and how far, how long they’re willing to stay there because in the end, a lot of women feel they came from a space where they were controlled by the diet industry saying- James: Oh yeah. Jen: Right, but then they’re screaming out into this other space where I’m like “But you’re still not really free, like you’re still not making free will choices if you can’t get your pendulum to come back to center.” James: Exactly- Jen: You’re just in a rebound state. James: You let the food hedonism rule instead. Jen: Right. James: You go from restriction ruling the life on one hand to highly palatable food ruling it on the other hand. Jen: Right. James: So you’re still, like you said, you nailed it, you’re still not really free, so be careful how far you let it swing- Jen: Right. James: Consider it a bit of a mental reset that it’s almost like a statement that you’re making- Jen: Exactly. James: A rejection of this toxic diet mentality where OK, and then you make your point, “Forget you diets.” And then you come back to what you really feel is going to be both physically and psychologically nourishing for you. Jen: Right, exactly. Annie: James, I know you have to get going because you have more interviews, you are just an in demand man. The first time we tried to schedule this episode you were just coming off of another interview and it was right before another one and everyone wants to talk to you, so I’m so thankful that you gave us some of your time. I know our community is just going to really enjoy this episode and I bet they cannot wait to get their hands on your new book which comes out the 22nd of January, so by time this should be available. James: Yes, indeed. Annie: And where, I know they already know where to find you but if they’re new to you, where are you hanging out online, where is the best way to connect to you? James: So if they want to find a book probably easiest place is well, they can either walk into a bookstore or go to bodyforwife.com and there’s a book tab that has links to every possible platform they can want. I think I mentioned that I did the narration for it so they can also get the audio if they want to do it that way. We have a lot of fun on my Facebook page, really good crowd there. Jen: Oh yes. James: It’s, I think we’re over two thirds women on the page and they’re very accepting, very feminist environment, sometimes some very foolish men show up and get their butts handed to them righteously and that’s an awesome thing to witness. Annie: You’ve had some threads that are like “Get your popcorn ready” sort of thing. Jen: You know, I don’t even say a word, I just read through them and I’m like, “Whoah!” James: Yeah, well and the thing is that people like the smack down because it serves as a lesson to other people and I learn things by, because there are so many really intelligent women on that page that, you know, people say “Oh, you know, you really get this whole kind of feminism thing” and it was like “Well, it’s only because I’ve been reading comments on my Facebook page from awesome women who know this stuff really well” and so yeah, that’s Facebook.com/bodyforwife, Twitter, Twitter sucks. I’m on Twitter let’s stick- Jen: What about Instagram? James: I’m not on Instagram, I don’t take good selfies. So Twitter is Twitter.com/bodyforwife as well. Annie: Awesome, well James, thank you so much, I cannot appreciate you enough, I’m really excited for everyone to check out this book and we’ll hope to have you back soon, OK? James: I’d love to and in closing, the one thing I will say to everyone that’s listening, that when it comes to these types of life changing epiphanies, the most important thing is to understand these things happen all the time and it is really important to believe that it’s something that can happen for you because that’s what opens yourself up to actually experiencing it. Annie: Awesome, thank you so much. James: Thank you. Annie: We’ll talk to you later. James: Bye. Lauren: Bye. Annie: Bye. The Bible teaches that the fundamental problem in our world is human sinfulness. Sin affects not only our own personal lives, but the lives of others, including the harmful consequences on future generations. Ultimately, creation itself is subject to the pain and suffering resultant of human sinfulness. As creator and sustainer of our entire universe, sin is also an offense against God himself. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the solution for human sinfulness, and the Holy S

For awhile I had a pro account with much more bandwidth, but I couldn't justify the cost with my time limitations over the past three years. That said, I also don't like fans and followers to be cock-blocked for weeks on end by bandwidth overages. Right now, I have to be satisfied with a free account, but I didn't anticipate using up my bandwidth three days after the reset date each month. It's a good problem to have, but still a problem. Anyway, I'll keep you all in the loop should things change. For now, I guess, circle the 24th of each month on your calendar to remind yourself to grab these episodes when you can before my 15 gigs of bandwidth per month evaporates! Thanks to each and every one of you for tuning in. It really makes a guy feel good. Notes and other random things: Alright! It's 3 hours to dawn, I've got a full bowl of cereal, half a glass of water, it's dark and I'm making a podcast. Hit it! This sassy little number contains ABCs and OMDs, Counterfeits and Camouflages, Boxcars and Beloveds, something "vicious", something "new" and even a double DM! Happy Listening! Okay, so like any normal testosterone-fueled male member of the species I'm a competitive guy, my own worst critic and I can't stand giving a less-than-competent effort in whatever it is I choose to undertake. That said, I do read comments and check reviews with regard to my 'casts to make sure I'm living up to some realistic level of excellence. For the most part, I've been thrilled that this insignificant little program I assemble in my basement has brought so much joy to so many of you. I try to be honest and forthright in my write-ups for my sake, for your sake, for band's sake, for God's sake. Most of what I write is knowledge I've gleaned over the years from being a fan, from reading music mags, from collecting umpteen thousands of records and reading umpteen thousands of liner notes on the bands I feature here. Often, however, I look up artists to confirm or deny stuff I thought I'd read, thought I'd heard, figured I'd seen or otherwise dreamed. Most importantly, I try to get it right. But I don't always. ...Which brings me to the first band I'd like to mention here: Counterfeit. In episode #23, I included Lee McFadden and Co.'s song "The Good Samaritan" At the time, it was a new find for me, one I discovered on a compilation I had just purchased. Until that point I knew nothing of the band and had a difficult time finding much information on them. I jumped to the conclusion that the song I possessed was probably their only release. Thankfully, a kind listener made a comment to the contrary. He wrote: "In fact there is a three-track EP of "The Good Samaritan" that was released a couple of years ago. Myself and the other two members are still in contact and work together occasionally on music." - Lee McFadden. Holy S#!+, Lee McFadden just wrote to tell me I'm full of crap. That's so COOL! Anyway, thanks to Mr. McFadden for correcting my error. I thought it appropriate to let you all know there is more to the band than just one song. I also figured that by using Lee's comment as part of my write-up it would give me another chance to feature the excellent track here. So, back to the "my own worst critic" comment a moment ago. One of the things about this podcast that is endearing/aggravating is that it's a live mix. That is, I hit record and go for an hour or more - typically 15 songs. As you can imagine, things can sometimes go wrong when performing live, especially at 3 in the morning when I recorded this one. Some errors are bad enough I scrap the whole thing and start over. Sometimes, I just accept things like variances in recording levels or slightly mismatched beats because it's too time-consuming to spend an hour or more redoing an entire 'cast for small inconsistencies, especially when you're using cheap, finicky mixing equipment as I do. In the case of this podcast it turns out two of the tracks here had questionable endings. The first, Book Of Love's "I Touch Roses" mix had a repeated phrase for the last 30 seconds that sounded as if the track were skipping. Of course, I remembered that at the last possible moment and quickly began mixing it out. So, if it sounds like an unnatural point at which to fade in/fade out, it is. And now you know why. I'd say Daniel Miller should be flogged for ending the track in that way, but how can I possibly stay angry at the fellow who founded Mute Records? I forgive you Daniel. Just don't do it again! In case you were wondering about the other track with the weird ending it was 900 Hours by Boxcar. Thankfully, the first gaffe reminded me to avoid a second. I'd like to spend a moment to write about Belouis Some. Frankly, I could spend a day debating the correct pronunciation of Neville Keighley's alter-ego ... but I won't. Just know that all the variants I've encountered rank right up there with bands like INXS, Cetu Javu, EBN-OZN and others whose names were all butchered during their infancy. (C'mon ... admit it. You called them "Inks" the first time you saw their record in the storefront window. You know you did!) Anyway, the track "Animal Magic" was released in 1987 on Belouis Some's self-titled album, two years after the band found chart success UK and stateside with the songs "Imagination" and "Some People". Those songs led to opening gigs for Nik Kershaw and Frankie Goes To Hollywood during their heyday in 1985 and a track called "Round Round" which appeared on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack. The soundtrack is notable for two things: it's association with a John Hughes film and for being killer back when soundtracks were mostly filler. (That rhymes!) As an interesting side note: Nik Kershaw's song "Wouldn't It Be Good" also appeared on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack as a cover version by Danny Hutton Hitters. Belouis Some's "Some People" would also surface on a Swatch commercial circa 1986. Australia had its share of good rock music in the 80s. Men At Work, INXS (however you pronounce them) and Midnight Oil represent just a few of the names. But as club culture began to consume record racks in the mid-80s, fledgling bands began to dabble in electronics, shifting their focus from guitar-infused pub rock to synth-based dance music. Brisbane's Boxcar were one of those bands that gained prominence world-wide. But old pub-rock habits die-hard and the band had a difficult time of things even in their home country where they were often met by a chorus of boo-birds during live performances. The group was also ridiculed for being too derivative of established artists like New Order (whom they toured with at the turn of the 90s.) Thanks in part to producer Robert Racic, who had worked with Severed Heads (also an Aussie electronic band) and Single Gun Theory among others, Boxcar's first full-length release "Vertigo", issued in 1990, was praised by critics for it's sophisticated electronic sound. Tracks like "Freemason", which charted at #8 on the Billboard Dance Chart and "Gas Stop" brought the group some recognition outside Australia. But despite support gigs for Depeche Mode, Erasure, The Pet Shop Boys and the aforementioned New Order, the band was never really able to gain much traction and after two more albums, "Revision" in 1992 and "Algorhythm" in 1994, the band's output and live dates began to ebb even though they never officially called it quits. ABC were like the cool kids in high school that everyone wanted to be like. They had the swankiest clothes, the hippest hair cuts, listened to the coolest music and seemed to always have their finger on the pulse of whatever the "it" thing was to do at the time ... at least until the 20-year reunion rolled around and you saw them wearing the same clothes and sporting the same haircuts, albeit with much less hair and carrying around 50 extra pounds and you realized there had been little personal growth there. The band's roots grew from a band called Vice Versa. Both guitarist and synthesizer player, Mark White, and saxophonist, Stephen Singleton, were members of that group and are notable for their first ever gig being the opening act for Wire. (Not a bad way to kick off a career). After the release of an EP called "Music 4", future ABC singer Martin Fry, at the time editor of his own fanzine called Modern Drugs, interviewed the band. Shortly thereafter, they asked him to join. From the start, the band were pretty set on making 100% machine-made music. Having mega-producer Trevor Horn of The Buggles Fame, a guy affectionately nicknamed, "The Man Who Invented The Eighties" in your corner can certainly help chart a solid course for success. And did it ever. The first album, "Lexicon Of Love", went #1 in the UK, spawned innumerable imitators, featured great songs like "Look Of Love", "Poison Arrow", "Tears Are Not Enough", "Date Stamp" and others, and should be on a short list of the best albums from start to finish to come out of the 80s. From there, however, the band never ventured far from their original song-writing formula and were unable, despite some hits here and there, to duplicate the immense success of "Lexicon". In ABCs defense, not many bands could. Further, the group continued to splinter, losing members as the years went on. Drummer David Palmer left to join Yellow Magic Orchestra shortly after "Lexicon" was released. Stephen Singleton left in 1984. Remaining members Fry and White then recruited Fiona Russell-Powell (known as Eden) and David Yarritu to mitigate the departures of Palmer and Singleton. That line-up produced their biggest hit stateside with "Be Near Me". Mid-1987, ABC's album Alphabet City spawned the Top 10 hit "When Smokey Sings", a tribute to the great Motown singer, Smokey Robinson. Interestingly, Smokey was in the midst of a career resurgence for a new generation of fans and was himself firmly ensconced on the pop charts with his single "One Heartbeat" at the same time as ABC's tribute. It marked one of the only times in chart history a singer had a Top 40 hit while simultaneously being the focus of another. Not many bands can say they were responsible for coining a term that would become part of the vernacular. In an earlier CRC, I mentioned that Throbbing Gristle's Genesis P. Orridge is widely recognized to have created the "industrial" tag with the advent of his label, Industrial Music, in the mid-70s. March 27, 1982 - that's the date Vicious Pink described their music as "techno" in a feature published in Sounds magazine - almost 4 years before the term gained wider acceptance in the Detroit DJ subculture. Band members Josephine Warden and Brian Moss formed the group in 1981 in Leeds, England, getting their start as backup singers for Marc Almond and Soft Cell. Originally called Vicious Pink Phenomena, Brian describes how the name came to be: "I met [Josephine] when I was DJ at an alternative night, I put on with friends, at a pub called “The Adephi” in Leeds. I also met Dave Ball and Mark Almond there through Jose, as she went to the same College as them, Leeds Polytechnic. We decided to start a band together for a bit of fun. Jose, Dave Ball and I wrote our favourite words down on pieces of paper, turned them upside down and shuffled them about. Then we each chose one of the pieces of paper, after that we rearranged them into the name Vicious Pink Phenomena, Jose’s word was Vicious, Dave’s was Pink and mine was, well, Phenomena. It was a kind of lottery I guess, but it worked. We thought it also sounded like it could be the title for a 50’s / 60’s Science Fiction B Movie." In all, the duo would release 5 dance singles, many produced by Dave Ball of Soft Cell. Despite zero promotion and garnering next-to-no mainstream support Vicious Pink managed to chart all five of those singles in the UK. The particular track here, "Cccan't You See" was their third single and was produced by the great Tony Mansfield of New Musik fame. It was the highest charting single of the bunch, reaching #67. That's it for this episode. I'll be back soon with another. Thanks everyone and Happy Listening!
