Raised in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia, she oozes style and creativity. With an early interest in fashion, design and art, she left school to work for top advertising agency Mojo. Soon after marrying and starting a much desired family, she was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's in her twenties and dedicated her future to raising two equally artistic daughters and advocating her health experiences for people living with her condition, positively impacting her community far and wide. Her reach has been instrumental as a participant in a pioneering Parkinson's drug trial under the leadership of principal neurologist Dr Victor Fung. This groundbreaking and newly approved device recently named VYALEV was funded through pharmaceutical company ABBVIE, also involved in other major groundbreaking Parkinson's genetic scientific research trials through Neura Australia with significant funding through the Michael J Fox organisation.' It has over the past three years been the answer to her regaining her mobility and giving her life back. With featured interviews on major television news channels she has now, along with a handful of selected inclusivity models, walked the esteemed Australian Fashion week for multi-disciplinary designer Jordan Gogos in his latest collection and further interviewing for and gracing both Vogue and Harpers Bazaar editorials. Ever keen to give back, her volunteering efforts have been awe inspiring including three years at the Sydney Writers' Festival, perfectly suited to this bookwork with her instagram page Books to Beaches spanning a plethora of publications, in particular shining a deserved light on home grown Australian authors. There are not enough adjectives to adequately praise and present this super woman but to say she is....a woman, a mother, an artist, a friend, an inspiration and a survivor.

On today's show we chat to Cathryn Wills, founder and creative director of luxury vegan bags and accessories brand SANS BEAST (‘sans' meaning ‘without' - a brand without animal).  After working in very impressive executive roles in Australian fashion retail for nearly 30 years, and for huge companies like JAG, The Country Road Group, Crumpler and MIMCO, Cathryn resigned from her final position in 2016 to take a new path.  The new path? Luxe handbags that are completely free of animal products - which she launched by the name of SANS BEAST in March of 2018.  With over a decade of her 30-year fashion career spent living and breathing the world of leather handbags, Cathryn progressively recognised the huge disconnect between her professional role and her ethical stance on animal welfare and the environment. Cathryn is an absolute force in the fashion industry, and has so much experience both in the workforce and in forging your own path - we already know you guys will get a lot out of this chat, whether you're looking to climb the ranks in your professional career or go out completely on your own.  – Cathryn is currently reading Animal Liberation Now by Peter Singer. Right off the bat, Clint and Connor argue the origin of the Rock n' Roll Classic "Smoke on the Water". Is it by Steppenwolf? Is it by Deep Purple? It was definitely written by Deep Purple. Never before was it performed by Steppenwolf. Clint disagrees. Then the boys talk video game classics such as Mario Party and Pikmin. Did he say Pokemon? Nope. Pacman? Nope. Yeah we're convinced this isn't a real game either. Connor then relates his relief for outlets like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to Clint's love of Budweiser. Marvel owns the rights to all of those terrible movies, but at least they got Groot and a bloated yet buff Filipino man. Anheuser-Busch owns the rights to all of those terrible beers, but at least they sponsored Dale Earnhart Jr. and and bloated yet buff Clydesdales. Same-same, but different. Lex then presents an excellent idea for the episode after the Tucson Roast Battle that the dudes should roast each other and have one another judge it. Sounds great in theory, but is it gonna happen? As long as they don't get too high on the cannabis or too drunk on the Bud Light Lime. World War II was an excellent time for British and Australian Fashion as well, remember shorts? Well you can thank the Aussies and Brits for that one. Hope the all had fun huffing coal in the mines with those squirrelly newsie boys. Did anyone notice that Asperger's just completely disappeared? Have you ever thought about what would have happened if WWII played out a little bit differently? What would America have done to Japan and Germany? What if Mussolini had the balls to speak up in that meeting with an uppity Adolf? What if there were Hors d'oeuvres in a Nazi Cabinet meeting? Who chokes on the prosciutto? What if you get dropped into the Ia Drang valley and you immediately get mauled by a tiger? Yes there are Vietnamese tigers. Sneaky little dudes, they are. Would you rather get jacked by a dude in a camouflaged foxhole or an itty bitty tiger? What if you were an innocent little boy in a rural Vietnamese village and your pa sends you out to check the hunting traps and you realize you've caught a Sgt. Johnson? While you were distracted by the latest luxury It-whatever (and the shiny, ridiculously expensive global marketing behind it) slow local fashion makers were carefully, quietly crafting their wares regardless - on a fraction of the budgets of the big fashion names. It's time to take more notice of them! Because if we don’t support the independents, how will they thrive? Can small local makers compete with the big guys today, and should they try? Or is it time to build new networks that create a totally different playing field? Meet one woman going her own way - and sharing what she’s learned along it. Simone Agius is the Melbourne maker behind Simetrie - a disruptive, hand-crafted accessories brand that's challenging norms. Thank you for listening to our "pass the podcast mic" series. If you're using fabric made from recycled fishing nets, consider what makes you different from the numerous other brands doing the same thing?· We are prepared to pay a premium for so many other things, but we don't seem to understand that equation when it comes to locally made fashion…brands need to be clear in their communication with consumers.· Being a Fashion Designer is complex, and I'm not sure many who launch are ready. Seek the help and support you need to succeed in the industry. You can find Melissa Singer on instagram at:– @melly_singerWant to join our ‘Start Your Fashion Business' Programme & Community? He offers many practical tips for both photographers, models, and stylists looking to break into the evolving fashion industry. I first made contact with Dave in April 2019, just before I underwent my reassignment surgery. I was reaching out to him to see if he'd be open to doing a model portfolio shoot for myself later that year once I recovered from my operation. He replied within 14 minutes of me sending my email with a resounding YES to being willing and excited to work with me; just the first of many examples of his diligence and professional work ethic. In October 2019, we did our first shoot together, and since then, doors have been continually opening for me in the modelling industry thanks to his guidance, connections, and patience. In this episode, how a high-achieving accounting graduate resigned from her high-flying career at Ernst & Young during the Global Financial Crisis, much to her parent’s disgust, with the dream of becoming one of Australia’s leading entrepreneurs. Well, that dream eventually came true, but not without getting in to some serious personal debt and a failed business along the way. In 2010, Jane Lu founded the online fashion label Showpo from her parents’ garage, having previously worked in accounting and corporate finance. What started off with a laptop and two shelves of clothing, is now an online global fashion empire, shipping to over 100 countries. Through her highly disruptive approach to online retailing, and capitalising on the use of social media, Showpo now boasts a cult social following of over 3.3 million engaged followers, a team of over 150 millennials across their central-Sydney HQ and distribution centre, and an annual turnover this year that will hit $30 million. I caught up with Jane in an upstairs wardrobe of her Sydney office. Sitting on a couple of hard old stools, it was hot, we were surrounded by clothes (as you’d expect), and there was an Instagram photo shoot happening next door showcasing the upcoming week’s new range of Showpo originals. But none of that stopped this quick-talking, fast-thinking fashion entrepreneur from verygenerously sharing some powerful business insights. “One of the most difficult things (in business) is when you grow really fast and you have people that don’t grow with you. Letting people go is hard ..but keeping the wrong people can lead you in the wrong direction … then you’re left with a huge mess to clean up. ” - Jane Lu, Showpo Support the show.

I'm sure you've heard that sustainable fashion is the thing right now. Searches on Lyst increased by 66% last year. Vogue has a sustainability editor. Slow fashion is so popular that even Zara is trying to convince us they're not a fast fashion brand.  But what does it take to make it as an independent designer working in this space? To cut through the noise to become a sustainable label people talk about? And buy? Are hard work and dedication enough?  Nope, says Courtney Holm, the Australian designer behind buzzy independent fashion label A.BCH. She argues that new gen designers need to rethink the whole system. Holm is on a mission to revolutionise how we buy, wear and dispose of clothing. In this interview we discuss the instinct to have a go yourself when you see something isn't being done, the importance of doing your homework and the usefulness of having a stubborn streak. The mainstream fashion production process is extremely wasteful. The whole system is built on over-ordering, taking a punt on how much will sell, and writing off over-production. This leads to shocking amounts of pre-consumer textiles and garments being landfilled or incinerated - according to some estimates, 1/3 of all the fashion ever produced it never sold. Australian made-to-order T-shirt company Citizen Wolf is using big data and algorithmic power to disrupt this. And they plan to take on the world. Can it work? How did founders Zoltan Csaki and Eric Phu build it? This thought-provoking discussion looks into the fashion crystal ball to imagine a leaner, greener, more responsive manufacturing future. Gwendolynne Burkin is part of an exciting generation of Australian fashion designer that came up a the late 90s independent fashion boom time alongside alum such as Akira Isagowa and Lisa Gorman. But since then, a lot has changed in the Australian Fashion industry. Many of the names defined that period - how we dressed, what our high streets looked like, and the way Australian style was defined in the eyes of the world - have disappeared due to influences like highly competitive off-shore production, and inevitable defeat of online shopping by fast-fashion and overseas mega-brands. For Gwendolynne to still be in business 21 years later is a small miracle, due mainly to a series of creative business reinventions. I wanted to talk to Gwendolynne about what it was like coming up in that era of promise - and how she has managed to continuously adapt and evolve within her industry in order to do what she loves. This is a great episode for anyone who is looking to start their own business - especially one based around artisanal skill set. When you ARE 'the machine’ at the centre of your business - how do you ensure that you are taking care of your biggest asset? For some creatives, neglecting wellbeing for the sake of heightened productivity may mean you are getting results at the cost of your health. You need to ensure you are supporting your passion - not just creatively but also physically, mentally, nutritionally and with rest. It’s up to you to take care of your greatest asset.

In Sydney they engergised the fashion scene, collaborating with creative friends like Peter Tully and David McDairmid, who went on to become leading lights of the Mardis Gras movement. In Milan and Paris, they were photographed by Italian Vogue and made a big splash. In the US, they were key to Neiman Marcus's Australian Fortnight in 1986 and in London, three years later, to the V&A show Australian Fashion: The Contemporary Art. Linda opened her Bush Couture studio in 1982 and began collaborating with Indigenous women batik artists at Utopia Station. This Episode is about culture and respect, and valuing originality. It’s also, broadly, about craft and technique and the hands-on practice of making clothes. And it's a window into another era via the story of how an arty kid from Melbourne grew up to be one of the wildest style voices of her generation. Today’s guest Nick Savaidis is the Founder of Etiko (clothing), and Jinta Sport, (sports equipment), ethical brands committed to fair trade, traceability, and sustainability. Since establishing these businesses in 2005, Nick has been awarded numerous sustainable and ethical awards. Released on the eve of the third anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, the 2016 Australian Fashion report – The Truth Behind the Barcode reviews the practices of many iconic brands in sold in Australia. This is the third report and once again Etiko has been awarded the A+ rating. Nick’s awareness of social justice began at a young age. Growing up, he witnessed inequality in his home and in his community where his mother, and other women in the neighbourhood, were poorly compensated for the garments they sewed for high-end brands. After working as a high school teacher, and in a remote aboriginal community, Nick decided to draw on the experience he gained in each of these jobs and combine it with his passion for social justice to develop a for-profit social enterprise/business that creates a positive social impact. Join our chat as we discover and discuss: How Nick's interest in fair trade inspired by his family's struggles when he was young Yurrampi Crafts: sourcing local t-shirt designs of aboriginal art From distributing the No Sweat brand to developing his own brand The use of organic cotton and sustainable rubber, and becoming the first non-food company in Australia to be Certified Fair Trade by FLO The Australian Fashion Report created in response to the Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh The benefits of GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and Fair Trade US accreditations Minimum wage vs. living wage The steps they are taking to become investment-ready Market demographics and strategies for reaching their market The power of social media in building their brand The challenge of encouraging people to apply their values to their purchasing decisions Profit sharing and giving back to communities The importance of setting up a board of advisors or mentors The impact of working with a team to help grow your business Quotes  "Business doesn't always have to be a bad thing. It actually can be a positive thing." @etikofairtrade #NickSavaidis "Some accreditations allude to being ethical but when you scratch the surface, they're guaranteeing the absolute minimum." @etikofairtrade #NickSavaidis "You can't sell a t-shirt for $5 or $10 without exploiting someone in the supply chain." @etikofairtrade #NickSavaidis "We have proven you can create an ethical supply chain in fashion." @etikofairtrade #NickSavaidis "The reality is that if you're a sustainable business, you're not going to have much an impact on anyone's life. I needed to become a generative business, one that generates social impact and profit. Without generating profit, we can't generate social impact." @etikofairtrade #NickSavaidis Episode Resources: Twitter @etikofairtrade Etiko Jinta Sport NAB Impact Investment fund 2016 Australian Fashion report – The Truth Behind the Barcode Nick's top tips : Get yourself a team. Work with others, their strengths and partnerships. Not having resources will hold you back. When considering accreditation, choose the one with the most clout to give your brand the most credibility. If you have the drive and the will you’ll find the resources to make things happen.
