The Environmental Impacts of Coffee ProductionFor most of us, coffee is a part of our daily lives. 62% of Americans drink coffee every day, with 7 in 10 drinking coffee every week. In 2024, the coffee market amounted to over $86.7 billion in gross revenue, with numbers only predicted to rise. Americans consume over 400 million cups of coffee each day, leading many to wonder of the harms of such rapid consumption. Unfortunately, for coffee-lovers, the reality is that coffee has a poor environmental footprint. The average total harvested area from coffee production is over 11 million hectares – an area larger than Scotland. Coffee production is associated with various environmental consequences such as water pollution, deforestation, soil degradation, and decreased biodiversity, to name a few. Traditionally, coffee beans are produced in the shade of trees, but due to heightened demand, many farmers are beginning to relocate production to sun grown coffee, which requires large scale forest removal. Every cup of coffee consumed destroys roughly one square inch of rainforest, making coffee the leading cause of forest destruction. Not only is coffee production extremely land intensive, but just one singular cup requires 140 liters of water to produce.Coffee production not only contributes to environmental changes, but is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change. By 2050, predictions reveal a vast decrease in coffee-suitable land, leading to worldwide decreases in yields. The consequences of climate change on coffee production can trigger changes in soil, water, crop, and nutrient management of the land. Interestingly, sustainable coffee systems may provide favorable ecological services, such as maintaining soil fertility, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Thus, it has been proposed that making coffee production more resilient will not only help in adapting to a changing climate, but can reduce the environmental consequences of this industry, even promoting positive environmental benefits. How can coffee production become more sustainable? The two main strains of coffee produced globally are Arabica and Robusta, both of which are extremely vulnerable to climate change due to rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and increased incidence of pests and diseases. Such climate impacts could lead to reduced coffee yields, affecting the quality and availability of coffee for consumers, and putting farmers' livelihoods at risk. The impact of climate change will be particularly noticeable in the coffee belt, the region around the equator where most coffee production occurs. In this area, even small changes in temperature and rainfall patterns can have adverse effects on coffee production, decreasing yields.Liberica coffee has been proposed as one alternative to conventionally utilized coffee strains, as it withstands climate change-induced heat, long-term drought and disease. Farmers across the world are looking to reintroduce Liberica as the common crop plant used to sustain the global coffee industry and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Excelsa coffee has also been considered due to its high yields and heightened conversion ratio from pulp to clean coffee, with minimal mechanical and labor-intensive activities required. Farmers across the coffee belt have begun to implement such changes themselves as they are first-hand facing the negative effects of climate change.Potential Benefits of Alternative Coffee Strains Coffee varieties such as Liberica are being utilized in countries like Uganda, one of the world's largest coffee exporters, as a means of adapting to the effects of a changing climate. Hybrid coffee varieties have potential for increasing welfare and enhancing resilience of smallholder farmers against climate change. With an expected doubling in coffee demand by 2050, it is necessary that more sustainable methods are adopted in order to respond to adverse climate consequences. Hybrid varieties thus provide a solution as they can increase productivity by enhancing yields and are less vulnerable to stressful environments. Ongoing Research is NeededThere remains a lack of research on the potential improvements such coffee varieties can have when applied to a larger scale. Furthermore, more research needs to be done to determine the optimal temperature ranges for precise yield levels. In areas with high production yields, more on the ground work is needed in order to support sustainable development of coffee. There is large uncertainty in climate projection data, socioeconomic factors and interactions which influence coffee plants and potential yield capacity. Furthermore, the initial concerns mentioned in regards to the environmental harms of coffee production still remain. About our guestCatherine Kiwuka works with the Plant Genetic Resources Center of the National Agricultural Research Organization of Uganda, researching climate resilient coffee varieties in Africa to withstand climate impacts. In order to sustain livelihoods, resilient coffee systems can both protect local smallholders, and improve environmental quality, paving a way for a more sustainable future.Further ReadingA Systematic Review on the Impacts of Climate Change on Coffee …“How Climate Change is Affecting Coffee” - Clive CoffeeImpact of climate change on coffee productionNew coffee varieties as a climate adaptation strategy: Empirical evidence from Costa Rica“Rising temperatures in tropics to lead to lower coffee yields and higher prices, study suggests” - The GuardianThe re-emergence of Liberica coffee as a major crop plantWhat Climate Change Could Mean for the Coffee You Drink For a transcript of this episode, please visit https://climatebreak.org/adapting-coffee-production-for-climate-resilience-with-catherine-kiwuka/

Climate change is threatening arabica and robusta, the two varieties of beans that make up the majority of coffee sales. But researchers suggest a more resilient but less popular bean, liberica, could offer a solution for farmers and coffee lovers alike. We discuss the difference with Matt Reynolds, a senior writer for Wired; and Jeremy LeClair, the owner of LeClair Organics, a coffee roasting company in Saskatoon.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

1. 西方人喝咖啡的频率主播Selah喝咖啡的频率是:normally drink 1 coffee a day, and sometimes 2。通常早上起来的第一件事就是make coffee,如果needs more energy或者是is meeting someone at a café,还会have an afternoon cup(在下午也喝一杯)。但在下午3点后是不喝咖啡的,除非是needs to stay up late that night(熬夜)。 1-2 cups a day is pretty normal。*make coffee 冲咖啡*stay up late 熬夜2. 咖啡也是有很多种类,按coffee beans(咖啡豆)来分类的话,有four main types of coffee beans(4种主要的咖啡豆):v Arabica阿拉比卡咖啡豆 (most common, 60% of world's coffee)v Robusta罗布斯塔咖啡豆v Liberica利比里卡咖啡豆v Excelsa咖啡豆在西方,最贵的咖啡是:the ones that have the most ingredients(用料最多), take the longest to make(耗时最长)and use the most machines(用机器也最多)。价格高低也会看where the coffee beans are from(咖啡豆的产地是哪),以及where you are drinking it from(你在哪里喝)。 *ingredient /ɪnˈɡri:diənt/ n. 比如说,Cappuccino(卡布奇诺), Latte(拿铁)、Macchiato(玛奇朵)。*espresso /eˈspresoʊ/ n. 浓咖啡3. 9种最常见咖啡的英文名(1) Espresso: 浓缩咖啡 里面含有1 oz. of highly concentrated coffee(一盎斯约28克的特浓咖啡)(2) Black Coffee:黑咖啡 brewed(调制) with no added flavors(没有任何添加口味), sugar or milk(不加牛奶或糖),也叫清咖啡(3) Cappuccino:卡布奇诺 里面有chocolate, foamed milk(奶泡), steamed milk(蒸奶), espresso(浓缩咖啡),还有syrup(糖浆)(4) Latte:拿铁 里面也有foam, steamed milk(奶泡和热牛奶), espresso(浓缩咖啡), syrup(糖浆),从成分上讲,比卡布奇诺少了巧克力(5) Iced coffee:冰咖啡由milk, ice, espresso, syrup调制而成(6) Blended coffee/ Frapuccino调和咖啡/ 星冰乐是星巴克最具代表性的饮品之一,是把iced coffee 放进blender(搅拌机)里,搅拌而成(7) Cold brew:冷萃咖啡black coffee that is steeped for a long time用冷水萃取咖啡粉很长一段时间就可以得到一杯cold brew coffee(8) Americano :美式咖啡 制作很简单,由hot water 和espresso混合而成,属于是very strong coffee(很浓的咖啡)(9) Macchiato:焦糖玛奇朵在steamed milk 中加入espresso调和而成欢迎留言告诉我们:你经常喝咖啡吗?

In this podcast, we explore the topic of why there are so many JDKs, how are they the same, and how they are different. We balance the Java perspective with a special guest from the Rust foundation to learn how a peer ecosystem works.Quick summary—the role of Java as a central system runtime lead to multiple implementations and the companies that make different distributions offer support and sponsor different work. For example Azul and Microsoft worked on Apple M1, and Bellsoft and Microsoft worked on Alpine Musl. All JREs are compatible through the TCK and vendors work together on security patches for the entire ecosystem.Guests:Simon Ritter, Deputy CTO of Azul Systems, making the Azul Platform, including the Azul Zulu builds of OpenJDK.Dmitry Chuyko, Senior Performance Engineer of Bellsoft, making the Liberica builds of OpenJDK.Bruno Borges, Product Manager Microsoft, making the Microsoft builds of OpenJDK and Temurin, Adoptium's builds of OpenJDK.Ashley Williams, founder and open-source strategist for the Rust Foundation.Erik Costlow, Developer Relations for Contrast Security, securing Java and non-Java applications.Foojay Articles:Fantastic JVMs and Where to Find Them
Sulawesi was formerly known as Celebes. Along with the rest of Indonesia, it was under Dutch control from the early 1600s until World War II. Coffee production in Indonesia was introduced and dictated by the Dutch East India Company. The first Typica plants arrived in 1750, as they had begun to be spread around the other islands of Java and Sumatra. The most famous coffees from Indonesia are those from the island of Sumatra, and they're processed as wet hulled coffees. This lends them their characteristic earthy, savoury, and sometimes almost meaty flavours. Sulawesi, on the other hand, primarily produces washed coffees for export, and our partners there at TOARCO (a Japanese-Indonesian joint mill and export venture) are experts at producing clean, sweet, and fruity coffees that we really enjoy. TOARCO owns the Pedamaran Plantation at 900–1,250 metres above sea level. It also purchases wet parchment (at 40% moisture) coffees from small producers at collection points in Perangian, Pango Pango, Minanga, and Perindingan. Once collected, the coffee is trucked to Pedamaran Plantation immediately after purchase. When it gets there it's dried using mechanical Yamamoto vertical dryers and Pinalhalense guardiolas, or horizontal dryers like those often found throughout Colombia. The mechanical dryers assist in maintaining uniform drying, and this helps the processing go more efficiently and cleanly. The drying typically takes 72 hours. If a producer wants to sell their parchment coffee to TOARCO, they need to get certified to the quality standards in selective picking, storage, transportation, moisture levels, and so on. Farmers are issued ID cards that allow them to sell their coffee at various purchasing points in the Tana Toraja region during the market week. TOARCO is focused on providing education and support to its producer partners. Currently, the company offers once-yearly classes for producers to receive their ID cards, but they hope to expand their educational opportunities to twice yearly and include things such as cherry selection, planting and picking techniques, and fermentation. They also hold a party at the end of the harvest cycle to celebrate, giving out awards to producers. The rewards include things such as depulpers and other necessary tools. Between 150 and 200 producers attend the party every year. Most of the coffee produced in Toraja is of the S795 varietal (the S stands for 'section'). It is thought to be the cross of S288 (a natural hybrid of Liberica and Arabica) and an old Kent varietal (a Typica variety that has been adapted to growing conditions in India). S795 is the most commonly-planted Arabica coffee in India and southeast Asia, and it was one of the first coffee leaf rust-resistant varieties to be discovered. It is also commonly known as 'Jember' thanks to the Jember Indonesian Coffee and Cacao Research Institute (ICCRI), whose staff first introduced it to the coffee farmers of Indonesia. This coffee is big and bold. There are bags of dark treacle with a delicate zing of dried cranberries and goji berries, and then it finishes with dark chocolate. Country: Indonesia Island: Sulawesi Region: Toraja Altitude: 1,400–1,600 m.a.s.l. Producers: Various smallholder farmers of Perangian, Pango Pango, Minanga, and Perindingan Processing method: Washed Drying method: Yamamoto vertical dryers, and Pinhalense guardiola Drying time: 72 hours Varietal: S795 Grade: A CUPPING NOTES Treacle, dried cranberries, goji berries, dark chocolate Clean cup: (1–8): 6 Sweetness: (1–8): 6.5 Acidity: (1–8): 6.5 Mouthfeel: (1–8): 6.5 Flavour: (1–8): 6.5 Aftertaste: (1–8): 6 Balance: (1–8): 6.5 Overall: (1–8): 6 Correction: (+36): +36 Total: (max. 100): 86.5 Roast Information Medium-dark to dark – we prefer this pushed steadily to the edge of second to let all the flavours shine, but it'll take a slightly slower and darker roast if you want to reduce the acidity and focus on the heavy body.

I'm Richard Stiller, a community manager at the SCA, and you're listening to the SCA Podcast. This week, the SCA Podcast is taking a quick break while we put the finishing touches on an upcoming lecture series recorded at last year's World of Coffee event in Berlin. In the meantime, I'd like you to meet Recap. It's our newest podcast! Every two weeks, Recap offers a brief overview of recent coffee developments in less than five minutes. If you like what you hear, subscribe by following the link in the show notes. Welcome to Recap, a new podcast from the Specialty Coffee Association offering a brief overview of recent coffee developments every two weeks. The monthly materials science journal, Matter, just published a study suggesting a new mathematical model for repeatable espresso extraction. Focused on the computational and physical attributes of espresso, the authors suggest that, if widely implemented, the protocol outlined in the study could significantly reduce coffee waste. Remarkably, the study was co-authored by Brisbane baristas Michael Cameron and Deschen Morisco, who tested the techniques of the study in a coffee shop. This study has already received significant attention from popular media outlets in the US and Australia. The study's co-author, the computational chemist Christopher Hendon, will present the work at the SCA's Specialty Coffee Expo in Portland this April. Meanwhile, across the Pacific in the Philippines, the Taal volcano has erupted, covering coffee trees in thick volcanic ash. The ash causes the leaves of coffee trees to wither, effectively starving them of energy which in turn reduces their ability to mature fruit. To assist, the Philippines' Department of Agriculture distributed water power sprayers to help remove the ash. It's not a perfect solution: the intense spray sometimes removes flowers and nearly-mature coffee cherries. Although Taal's eruption has caused considerable damage to many high-value crops in the area, coffee is reported to be the most affected. This will be a difficult harvest year for the affected Phillipino farmers, so the Department of Agriculture is also offering up to the equivalent of a million US dollars to affected farmers through a combination of cash aid and zero-interest loans. The effects of the eruption are likely to impact the country's recent growth in specialty coffee production. A long-time producer of coffee, this is not the first time the Philippines' coffee production has been decimated by environmental changes: a widespread influx of coffee rust at the turn of the twentieth century led local farmers to favor Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. A recent feature in the New York Times explores a culture-shift in Saudi Arabia through the lens of coffee shops. In December, the government announced it would no longer require businesses to segregate their customers by gender. Since the law passed, some specialty coffee shops already pursuing a more inclusive vision can now continue to do so without fearing a visit from the country's law enforcement. Reports suggest Saudi Arabia is the Middle-East's fastest-growing coffee market and, in December 2019, the country held its first-ever sanctioned national barista championship. Ahmed Bahaa of Camel Step Coffee Roasters will fly to Melbourne, Australia to represent Saudi Arabia for the first time at the World Barista Championships in May. If you want to dive deeper into anything you heard today, check out the links in the description of this episode. Recap will be back in two weeks' time. Thanks for listening and have a great week! You can also find Recap on iTunes, Spotify, or Transistor by searching for “Recap: Recent Developments in Coffee.” Have a story you think might be a good fit for Recap?
