Birth rates are falling all over the world, and some people are freaking out, saying this could tank our society — and even spell the end of humans. In the U.S., so-called pronatalism is having a major moment, with lots of people making the case for more babies — President Trump has called for a “baby boom” and has pledged to be “the fertilization president.” So today, we're going to find out: Is humanity really hurtling toward population disaster? And if this IS a problem — is it even possible to flip the switch from baby bust to baby boom? To find out, we speak with economists Prof. Jisoo Hwang and economics lecturer Dr. Neha Deopa. Find our transcript here: https://bit.ly/ScienceVsFertilityRates In this episode, we cover: (00:00) People are freaking out about the birth rate (02:51) Are fertility rates really declining? (07:42) Why South Korea's fertility rate is so low (14:51) How low fertility rates can mess up society (20:24) Can influencers bump up fertility rates?? (28:17) Which government policies could bump up fertility rates? (35:43) What SHOULD we do if we want people to have more babies? This episode was produced by Blythe Terrell, with help from Rose Rimler, Meryl Horn, Michelle Dang, and Ekedi Fausther-Keeys. We're edited by Blythe Terrell. Our executive producer is Wendy Zukerman. Cemeteries just lend themselves to ghost stories. There is hardly a town that doesn't have that one cemetery that has a legend or myth connected to it. These legends are hard to prove, but even without evidence they have staying power. And most people like to believe that their loved ones hang around even after they've died, so why not hang out at the cemetery where they're buried. In this 31st episode of haunted cemeteries, we share cemeteries in Arkansas, Texas, Canada, Oklahoma, Illinois and Indiana. The Moment in Oddity features the Yeti Crab. The Exile and the crew of the Ebon Hawk return to Dxun at the behest of Jedi Master Kevar, loyal guardian of Onderon's queen. Onderon itself is at war, and like everything else in KOTOR 2, this crisis could spiral out of control and destabilize the wider galaxy if things go bad. And that's why the Exile and co will need to split into two teams, finally kill a bunch of Sith randos, and spend like an hour doing basic algebra and deeply confusing logic puzzles. How is it possible we've never done a governess episode? And how is it possible Louisa Darling hasn't been a guest on the pod yet? We're rectifying both of these injustices this week on the pod. We talk about Jane Eyre, The Sound of Music and other primordial governesses, and discuss exactly what kind of buttons these books installed--almost entirely thanks to old school historicals. We also talk about how governess books are some of the only books in which we will suffer a child, and yes, we shout out the nannies, too!Louisa Darling is the pen name of Louisa Edwards and Lily Everett, and the author of Don't Let Your Dukes Grow Up to be Scoundrels, Where Have All the Scoundrels Gone, and Scoundrel, Take Me Away. Our next read along is Gorilla Twins, AKA Lorraine Heath's The Earl Takes All. Find it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple Books or wherever you get your books. If you'd like more romance chat in your life, please consider joining our Patreon, which comes with an extremely busy and fun Discord community! There, magnificent firebirds hang out, talk romance, and be cool together in a private group full of excellent people. Learn more at patreon.com. NotesLearn more about The States Project and donate to the Fated States Giving Circle to keep Virginia blue this November.Welcome historical author Louisa Darling. She's written contemporary romance as Louisa Edwards and women's fiction as Lily Everett. She imprinted on Jayne Eyre and worked as an editorial assistant for Leslie Gelbman at Berkley, who edited Nora Roberts and Jayne Ann Krentz.Maybe all those early governess books were really about The Sound of Music. We talked about the Molly O'Keefe series that included Wait For It in season 7, and about Vanessa Riley and wet nurses when we had Kennedy Ryan on in season 2. Finally, our next deep dive will be Gorilla Twins. The actual title, of course, is The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. The BooksDon't Let Your Dukes Grow Up to be Scoundrels by Louisa Darling
Starting is the hardest part of any habit. Your brain is wired to conserve energy. The Mudra (Gyan Mudra) is the ultimate antidote to this friction. It requires minimal energy and is completed in a second, yet it functions as a powerful, non-verbal Commitment Device. It is a starting ritual. WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S SERIES: Beyond Motivation: The Science of Automatic Discipline When you start meditating, your Pre-Frontal Cortex (PFC)—the center of logic, planning, and willpower—is working hard. This is the part of the brain that knows how to tie your shoes or drive a car without conscious thought. The techniques used this week—the physical Mudra cue, the rhythmic Breathing, and the simple Affirmation—are all designed to speak the language of the Basal Ganglia: simple, repeatable, and cued by the environment. This is day 4 of a 7-day meditation series, "Beyond Motivation: The Science of Automatic Discipline," episodes 3395-3401. This season aims to be gracefully thought-provoking, practically helpful, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging. Jay Kim serves as lead pastor at West Gate Church in the Silicon Valley of California. He's the author of several books including Analog Christian, Analog Church, and Listen, Listen, Speak. Jay also hosts the Digital Examen podcast and much of his work focuses on the intersection of the digital age and spiritual formation. Mentioned in the episode: Analog Church by Jay Y. Here’s a look at the top conversations making noise today: President Trump is pushing to shut down what he dubs “Democrat programs” amid the ongoing government funding standoff, setting the stage for potential permanent cuts and further political gridlock. Meanwhile, award-winning artist Solange Knowles has landed a three-year residency appointment at USC’s Thornton School of Music, where she’s expected to help shape new courses in music curation and cultural practice. In entertainment estate news, Paris Jackson is locked in a legal battle with Michael Jackson’s estate’s executors over millions in alleged unapproved legal payouts, even as the estate continues to grow in value. And in a somber turn, the neo-soul world is mourning the passing of D’Angelo, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer at age 51, leaving behind a celebrated musical legacy and a mourning community of fans and fellow artists.
