He was welcomed into the home of Wendy, a devoted Mennonite, and Glenn, a man of mixed Black and Native American heritage from a Pentecostal background. These God-ordained parents raised Brent in a Christian home filled with compassion, strength, and purpose—nurturing not only him but more than 160 foster children over 35 years.Reflecting on his life, Brent shared,“We are not the sum of what we've been through, but the sum of what God brought us through. We all have a story, but the common thread in all our stories is His grace. His love. His redeeming power. He has walked with us every day of our lives.”Brent opens up about the challenges of growing up as a mixed-race child in a predominantly white community—facing racism, rejection, and misunderstanding in school. Misdiagnosed and mislabeled, he struggled academically, often being called "stupid" and placed in remedial classes. It wasn't until later he was diagnosed with ADD. But through it all, sports and his vibrant personality gave him an outlet—and his parents' prayers kept him going.“I was great at sports and even better with people. Basketball helped me survive school. My personality and my parents' prayers helped me survive life.”Even while he wrestled with his identity and acceptance, God never let go.“When I tried to run, He didn't let me get far. I struggled with knowing who I was, but God always pulled me back.”Brent eventually found his refuge at the piano. There, in the quiet moments of songwriting, he found a voice to speak directly to God. Music became his language. Worship became his way of life.“Worship is more than words—it's the heart's action, a lifestyle of love in spirit and truth. It's our honor displayed to the heart of the Father.”Despite falling short, facing broken relationships, and battling inner demons, Brent never stopped being pursued by grace.“He chose me—even when I wouldn't choose myself. Through all the pain, anger, confusion, and lies, God never left. I generally label the first part of the monthly new release series the “friends of the show” broadcast. Looking at tonight’s folder of tunes, though, the sequel actually has more artists of that sort than part one had. As always, there’s  lengthy set recapping a ton of wonderful Rum Bar Records release. Let’s face it, thanks to their generosity and the sherr number of great records they put out every month they fit the “best friend” category. But a large portion of the show includes a number of other submitted tracks by the likes of Shortwaves, Joe Normal, mp clarke, The Rockerati, and The chrisVandalay Project. And a thumbs up to the always prolific Friends of Cesar Romero for putting out not one but three new releases this past month! There’s also some great tracks from veteran artists this month. In this episode I chat with Claire McCreedy from the ACT. Claire grew up in an unpredictable and emotionally unsafe environment, with an alcoholic mother and parents who lived quite reclusively. From a young age, her nervous system was wired for survival. Social skills didn't come naturally, home life was isolating, and by fourteen, alcohol became her tool for managing social situations.As life progressed, Claire found herself in a domestic violence relationship and continued to use alcohol as a way to soothe anxiety and emotional overwhelm. After separating from her partner, the loneliness she felt on weekends without her children became unbearable, she describes those weekends as “one weekend I'm a mother, the next weekend I don't know who I am.” Alcohol became a numbing mechanism to cope with that disconnection.Her turning point came when a new partner gently but firmly reflected back the reality of her drinking, expressing that he couldn't have that level of alcohol around his daughter. It sparked a powerful wake-up call.Claire began to educate herself about alcohol and got sober-curious. Today, at 42, she's over two years sober and thriving. The hymn reminds us, “The Law of God is Good and Wise” (LSB 579), and that law calls us to love, serve, and show mercy to all whom God places before us—yes, even the unlovable, the overlooked, and the outright difficult. Whether it's the wounded, the wicked, or the weary, the call is the same: “Go and do likewise.” Christ Himself is the ultimate Good Samaritan—He did not pass us by in our sin and death but came to us, bore our burdens, and paid the cost to make us whole. In the eighth episode of Soundscapes NYC, host Ryan Purcell talks with music history professor Steve Waksman about the social and stylistic transformation of the New York rock scene during the mid-1970s. The introduction of new bands clashed with the old guard, culminating with a violent altercation between artists in CBGB in March 1976.  In 2024, Waksman accepted the Leverhulme International Professorship in Music in the Department of Media, Humanities, and the Arts at the University of Huddersfield (UK) where for the next five years he will conduct a comprehensive study of how music and culture have developed since the invention of sound amplification. Lawrence Swift Noxon was born in March 1943. At five months old, he was diagnosed with what we now call Down syndrome. Three weeks later, on September 22, 1943, baby Lawrence died from electrocution under highly suspicious circumstances.
