Ever wondered how globe-trotting lifestyles are transforming in our post-pandemic world? In this captivating episode of "Nomadic Diaries," guest Sylvia Thiesen interviews host Doreen Cumberford, to find out why Nomadic Diaries exists. The Importance of Belonging and ConnectionOne of the central themes of the podcast is the importance of connection and belonging. In today's digital age, this issue is even more pressing, especially for older generations who may face loneliness after returning from abroad. The podcast aims to explore these themes further, with future episodes focusing on crossing cultures, building community, and fostering a sense of belonging. The Role of Podcasting in Storytelling and Personal GrowthFor Doreen, podcasting is more than just a platform for sharing stories; it's a tool for personal growth and exploration of the expatriate journey. Adapting to New Cultures and Forming Cross-Cultural RelationshipsAdapting to new cultures is a recurring topic in this episode. Doreen and Sylvia discuss the challenges and intricacies of socializing in different cultural environments. For example, Doreen contrasts social activities in Colorado with those in other places she has lived. Doreen shares her approach to integrating into local communities, emphasizing the need for an open mindset and active participation.Advice for the Relocation JourneyDoreen offers invaluable advice for listeners contemplating a move abroad. She also highlights the significance of cross-cultural relationships and the role they play in enriching the expatriate experience.Misconceptions About the Expat ExperienceThere are common misconceptions about living abroad, which Doreen addresses candidly. Many people assume that the experience will be continuously exciting and comparable to the comforts of home. However, she points out the 'honeymoon' phase that expatriates often go through, eventually requires effort and intention to maintain an engaged and fulfilling life abroad. Here at Nomadic Diaries we interview expat and cross-cultural authors and experts who share the attitudes and strategies that help us create a more inspired and fulfilling expat and repatriation experience. We would appreciate it if you would share a review:Leave a review and share what inspires you;Send any questions or comments you have to us;Henry David Thoreau said, "it matters not where or how far you travel, the further, commonly, the worse, but how much alive you are".So how much alive are you?Support the showHome is Where Your Story Crosses Borders! We aim to inspire expat solutions, by helping you navigate global living with Confidence.

In this episode, Clare is joined by Nivea Canalli Bona, a university professor hailing from Brazil who is also now a journalist and writer. Nivea shares her journey explaining how love has motivated her to go way out of her comfort zone, redefine herself multiple times and take on jobs and roles she had never dreamt of doing. Nivea had already lived in Chile and Spain, so knew how to adapt to a new way of living. But nothing prepared her for coming remarkably close to being homeless, dealing with COVID-19 and ending up working 14 hours a day for 7 days a week. Nivea explains how she adapted, what she learned in the process and why she now sees herself as a world citizen. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nivea grew up without being attracted to the idea of a life in America. But, while living in Chile, she fell in love with an American. Moving somewhere radically different, brings out new facets of your personality and you really see yourself in a different light and change. Provided you are willing you can adapt. Even the things that you do not have total control over can be managed to some extent. For example, you can certainly manage your reaction to them. Finding the silver lining is smart. Regardless of what happens you come away with something new. BEST MOMENTS ‘I learned that what moves me around (motivates me) is who I love.' ‘Suddenly we were almost homeless and no jobs for both of us.' ‘Somehow, in my heart, I knew that I needed to have that experience.' During this conversation, Jay Sethi, CMO of Diageo Beer Co at Diageo paints a picture of multicultural neighborhoods sharing the foods and flavors they love thus expanding one another's tastes and perspectives. Jay backs up this idyllic vision with a unique approach to following immigration data to predict consumer trends. He speaks to serving “the total American consumer” with authenticity and empathy. Using the example of Diageo's acquisition of Lone River Ranch Water he discusses shaping the future of your category in a way that reflects culture in the best possible way. Heritage, he says, helps brands secure and sustain a place in the hearts and minds of their customers. When you take the time to expose yourself to the full spectrum of American communities - whether you are a marketer, business dev leader, agency exec, or in any other role - you develop a deeper understanding of America's amazing diversity (in the most literal sense of that word). This understanding will shape your product development, your marketing messages, and your corporate roadmap in meaningful ways that drive growth and customer loyalty.Looking to the future, he sees the emerging buying power of Gen Z as the force to follow in determining the next steps for your brand strategy. The Takeaways:Immigration data is an often overlooked predictor of consumer trendsTaking a multicultural approach to your brand strategy drives growth and retentionGen Z prizes authenticity and their buying power is only increasingSubscribe to BRAVE COMMERCE on your favorite podcast platform! You can listen and subscribe to all of Adweek's podcasts by visiting adweek.com/podcasts.Stay updated on all things Adweek Podcast Network by following us on Twitter: @adweekpodcasts.Follow our hosts on Twitter: @RachelTipograph @PezMeister1And if you have a question or suggestions for the show, send us an email at podcast@adweek.com. Having a father who served in the Air Force, Joydeep spent a large segment of his childhood moving around India while attending the Air Force School. He has since worked his way up from being a software engineer in Bangalore, to a Senior Principal Consultant in London; and now has global responsibility in a senior manager role at HSBC Bank. But what I love about this conversation were the insights and perspectives on how this less-than-common upbringing helped him to adapt so well to new cultures and environments; something that played to his advantage once he moved with his wife to London. In this episode, we also discuss what the education system was like in India, the importance of society and cultural events, and especially the growing emphasis on sports. Joydeep also talks about stepping into the realm of entrepreneurship and building a community of like-minded people who are there to empower and support each other in their pursuits. Hello wonderful humans, in this episode you follow me and my dear friend Boaz onto two meetings because we decided after the first talk that we needed to add a few more things. And we could have talked even longer. So here you find the essence of our talks. During the first recording, Boaz was still in Berlin. In the second one, he was visiting his birth country Israel. Living in (between) two cultures while creating a new one is the main topic of this episode. We talked about Boaz art projects, his time in the military, masculinity, and relations. I am impressed by how deep our talk went and I am still very touched by Boaz poem "My forefathers" which you can listen to at the end of the podcast. Here you can find Boaz creations and contact him:https://digitalboaz.comhttps://www.instagram.com/digitalboaz/http://digitalboaz.myportfolio.com/And don't forget to check out the Sketch-O-Mathttps://www.instagram.com/sketch_o_mat/Recorded by: Siri BerlinIf you like this podcast, please share it with your friends, subscribe or leave a comment on our social media. I sat down with Oscar García-Johnson to talk about Spirit Outside the Gate: Decolonial Pneumatologies of the American Global South (IVP Academic, 2019). We discuss doing theology in the colonial difference and centring indigenous practices, values, and ideas; we talk about Transoccidentality and how it repositions Christian identity toward a community-in-movement (and the implication of this in conversations around migrants and migration). We also go deep on pneumatology, discussing his view of the Spirit as Decolonial Healer and his response to one of the book’s central question: “What are Christians to make of the Holy Spirit’s occasional encounters with cultures and religions of the America’s before the European conquest?”Oscar García-Johnson, Academic Dean for the Center for the Study of Hispanic Church and Community and Associate Professor of Theology and Latino/a Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. Prior to joining the Fuller faculty in 2008, he taught for ten years as an adjunct faculty member at Fuller. He also served as a regional minister with the American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles for 11 years and planted four new churches in Southern California.Oscar García-Johnson teaches in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. His research methodology interlaces de/postcolonial studies, classical theologies, and US Latino/Latin American studies into a critical hermeneutic he calls Transoccidentality. His writings include Spirit Outside the Gate: Decolonial Pneumatologies of the American Global South (IVP Academic, 2019), Conversaciones Teológicas del Sur Global Americano (coedited, Puertas Abiertas/Wipf & Stock, 2016), Theology without Borders: Introduction to Global Conversations, coauthored with William Dyrness (Baker Academic, 2015), ¡Jesús, Hazme Como tú! 40 Maneras de Imitar a Cristo (Wipf & Stock, 2014), The Mestizo/a Community of the Spirit: A Latino/a Postmodern Ecclesiology (Pickwick, 2009), and chapters in The Spirit Over the Earth: Pneumatology in the Majority World (Eerdmanns, 2016), The Gospel after Christendom: New Voices, New Cultures, New Expressions (Baker Academic, 2012), Vivir y servir en el exilio: Lecturas teológicas de la experiencia latina en los Estados Unidos (Kairos, 2008), and Pasando la Antorcha (Kerigma, 2005).In addition to teaching courses at Fuller, García-Johnson is a social activist involved in faith-rooted holistic justice with Matthew 25 of Southern California, LA RED, and CCDA. He offers conferences on leadership development and ministry across the Americas (US included), Asia, and Africa. Welcome back to another episode of the podcast, this is part 2 of the conversation I had with Neil Theisen. We laugh and chuckle over some memories from studying abroad in Singapore and traveling throughout Vietnam and Malaysia. Neil also shares some of his powerful views on becoming and staying committed to being a vegetarian. Here are some interesting facts about consuming meat: Animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all of the world's transportation systems combined It takes an average of 683 gallons of water to produce just 1 gallon of milk It takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef It's estimated that by going vegan, one person can save approximately 219,000 gallons of water a year Some food for thought as we enter in an era where we increasingly see individuals empowering themselves to come together and make an impact. In this episode, I discuss a study that explores the process of fitting in or retooling to new cultures. In this episode I summarise the key findings which includes an exploration of the psychological conflict created when individuals are trying to adapt to working in new cultures and the techniques that can be employed to help reduce this conflict and translate how you can utilise the findings from this study into practice. The study I am discussing in this episode is Molinsky, A. L. (2013). The psychological processes of cultural retooling. Academy of Management Journal, 56(3), 683-710.
