Spear (DBA MS MS)Principal, HVE LLCSr. Lecturer, MIT Sloan SchoolSr. Fellow, Institute for Healthcare ImprovementCreator, See to Solve Gemba and Real Time Alert SystemsSSpear@MIT.edu www.SeeToSolve.com Steve@HVELLC.comKnowing how to get smarter about what you do and better at doing it, faster than anyone else, is critical, a bona fide source of sustainable competitive advantage. How so? All organizations share a challenge. They're trying to coordinate people—sometimes a few, sometimes many thousands—towards shared purpose, somewhere on the spectrum from upstream conceptualization and discovery, through development, design, and ultimately delivery. The problem is, particularly at the startof any undertaking, no one really knows what to do, how to do it, nor can they do it well. All that has to be invented, created, discovered…figured out. So, those who solve problems faster, win more. After all, if your team and mine chase similar goals (or we face off as adversaries), you succeed (or win) because you come to your moments of test better prepared than I do. Since knowhow and skills are not innate, you won because you solved your problems, better and faster than I didmine, gaining edges in relevance, reliability, resilience, and agility.Spear's work focuses on the theme of leading complex collaborative situations, imbuing them with powerful problem solving dynamics. The High Velocity Edge earned the Crosby Medal from ASQ. “Fixing Healthcare from the Inside” won a Harvard Business Review McKinsey Award, and five of Spear's articles won Shingo Prizes. “Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System” is a leading HBR reprint and part of the “lean” canon. He's written for medical professionals and educators in Annals of Internal Medicine, Academic Medicine, and Health Services Research, for public school superintendents in Academic Administrator, and for the general public in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Fortune, and USA Today. High velocity learning concepts have been tested in practice, helping building internal capability for accelerated improvement and innovation at Alcoa—which generated recurring savings in the $100s of millions, Beth Israel Deaconess, a pharma company—with compressions by half in a key drug development phase, Intel, Intuit, Pittsburgh hospitals, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Mass General, Novartis, Pratt and Whitney—which won the F-35 engine contract with its pilot, DTE Energy, US Synthetic, and the US Army's Rapid Equipping Force. The Chief of Naval Operations made high velocity learning a service wide initiative, and Spear was one of a few outside advisors to the Navy's internal review of 2017's Pacific collisions. He was also an advisor to Newport News Shipbuilding bout introducing innovative systems on the Gerald Ford, the first in a new generation of aircraft carriers. The See to Solve suite of apps has been developed to support introducing and sustaining high velocity learning behaviors. At MIT, Spear teaches Leaders for Global Operations and Executive Education students, has advised dozens of theses, and is principal investigator for research titled “Making Critical Decisions with Hostile Data.” Spear's work history includes Prudential-Bache Capital Funding, the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment, the LongTerm Credit Bank of Japan, and the University of Tokyo. As President, CEO, and Founder of Nasoni, Steve Waddell has an innovative and entrepreneurial background with over 39 years of experience in business, engineering, leadership, and management. From building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines with Newport News Shipbuilding to contributing heavily to the growth of Reed Integration, Inc, a small business (owned by his wife) into a multi-million-dollar government consulting business, he has developed extensive skills in leading and managing people while managing risk, budget, schedule, and stakeholder expectations.  His desire to make a bigger impact on people's lives as well as the environment led him to develop an innovative bathroom faucet that saves water while improving functionality. Today, the resulting product, Nasoni's award-winning fountain faucet, is an industry-leading bathroom faucet known for product innovation and customer satisfaction. And this past June, he received a Phase I SBIR Grant from the National Institutes of Health for $259,015 to develop a smart, sensor fountain faucet to enable those living with spinal cord injury to live more independently.    A seasoned entrepreneur, he is focused on building key investor relationships and disrupting a highly competitive market. His strong work ethic, results-driven nature, and unique ability to identify improvement opportunities and transform them into functional solutions allow him to accomplish even the most aggressive objectives. In this episode, you will learn the following: How did Steve Waddell come up with the idea for Nasoni, an award-winning fountain faucet? How has Nasoni helped people with disabilities, and how does it save water? What is the process that Steve Waddell went through to bring his idea to fruition?   Remarkable Quote: “If the big faucet companies weren't going to do anything about it, I said, I'm going to try to fix it."   Sponsor Today's episode is sponsored by: Picked Cherries' social podcasting app is the destination for the best podcast listening experience for all listeners. Weighing 100,000 tons, Kennedy features the most futuristic technology ever put to sea, making it the most dangerous aircraft carrier in the world.Only one place possesses the brawn, brains and brass to transform naval warfare with such a creation – the Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia and its 30,000 employees and shipyard workers. The building of the USS JFK is part of a millennia-long story of the incredible danger that comes with building a ship. Welders have to walk hundreds of feet in the air and hang upside down like Batman to join beams. Painters have to squeeze into compartments smaller than coffins. All of this under impossible deadlines with the specter of COVID hanging overhead. To talk about the past, present, and future of aircraft carriers is Michael Fabey, author of “Heavy Metal: The Hard Days and Nights of the Shipyard Workers Who Build America's Supercarriers.” We discuss the importance of this American made industry not only on a local but nationwide level, and why aircraft carriers still matter in the third decade of the 21st century.

Today I speak with Michael Fabey about his new book Heavy Metal: The Hard Days and Nights of the Shipyard Workers Who Build America's Supercarriers. "An extraordinary story of American can-do, an inside look at the building of the most dangerous aircraft carrier in the world, the John F. Kennedy. Tip the Empire State Building onto its side and you'll have a sense of the length of the United States Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the most powerful in the world: the USS John F. Kennedy. Weighing 100,000 tons, Kennedy features the most futuristic technology ever put to sea, making it the most agile and lethal global weapon of war. Only one place possesses the brawn, brains and brass to transform naval warfare with such a creation – the Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia and its 30,000 employees and shipyard workers. This is their story, the riggers, fitters, welders, electricians, machinists and other steelworkers who built the next-generation aircraft carrier. Heavy Metal puts us on the waterfront and into the lives of these men and women as they battle layoffs, the elements, impossible deadlines, extraordinary pressure, workplace dangers and a pandemic to complete a ship that will be essential to protect America's way of life. The city of Newport News owes its very existence to the company that bears its name. The shipyard dominates the town—physically, politically, financially, socially, and culturally. Thanks to the yard, the city grew from a backwater to be the home of the premier naval contractor in the United States. Heavy Metal captures an indelible moment in the history of a shipyard, a city, and a country." Michael Fabey has reported on military and naval affairs for most of his career. In his work for National Geographic Traveler, the Economist Group, Defense News, Aviation Week, and Janes, he has collected more than two dozen reporting awards, including the prestigious Timothy White Award. Few journalists have had as much firsthand experience of America's naval ships and aircraft and the officers who command them. He is the author of Crashback: The Power Clash Between the US and China in the Pacific. A Philadelphia native, he currently resides in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Return to Robeson County   Hey, y'all, and welcome to Southern Macabre! I'm your host, Aeryn, and I'm so excited to have you join me for True Crime Friday! Today we're going to return to Robeson County, North Carolina because there is so much going on there that I just wasn't ready to pack up and leave. Today I'm going to tell you about cold cases and true crime.   I'm going to warn you, today's episode may be a bit graphic for some listeners, but I feel the details are important. Also, here in the south, it's a sign of respect to put a Mr. or Mrs. in front of a person's first name. That's important because of the people I'm talking about in this episode and most of my listeners ain't from around here.   Also, I'm going to stay out of Robeson County for a while after today. I've become pretty obsessed with what's going on there and I could talk about it every week. However, this is Southern Macabre not Robeson County Macabre. Or more appropriately, What the Heck is Going on in Robeson County?. I don't know what case or cases I'm going to do next, but it probably won't be in North Carolina either.     After speaking to a Lumberton local, I learned of two other women who were found naked and murdered in East Lumberton, but in 2003 instead of 2017.   Lisa Hardin was thirty-six years old when she initially went missing. Her mother said that she knew something was wrong when Lisa didn't come home. Her body was found in the woods on the east side of Lumberton, around the same area as Kristin, Rhonda, and Megan. Her orange Harley Davidson t-shirt was pulled up around her neck and her underwear was twisted around her ankle. She had been strangled.   Four months earlier, police found twenty-three-year-old Michelle Ann Driggers's naked, decomposed body in a cemetery in east Lumberton. Less than a mile from where Lisa would later be found.   Also, like Rhonda and Megan, they were both members of the Lumbee tribe. I tried to find where they were murdered, to see if it was that same block, but I couldn't find an exact location for Lisa or Michelle.   Sadly, none of these cases have been solved yet. I ask that if you are listening today, please pray for the victim's families. I have spoken to some of them and you can hear the pain in their voices so strongly that you can almost feel it yourself.   ----   I learned of this case last week and it's a big part of why I wanted to talk about Robeson County, and Lumberton, again this week. Julian Pierce was one of thirteen children in his family and he was born in 1946. He graduated high school at the age of sixteen and went to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He had a full scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. So, he was an extremely smart man.   He started his career at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. He later worked for the Navy shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia as a chemist. There he developed an award-winning chemical process for decontamination of nuclear reactors. So, Mr. Julian wasn't just smart – he was a genius!   After working as a chemist for several years, he attended the law school at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina. After graduating in 1976, he accepted a position with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. While working there, Mr. Julian attended Georgetown School of Law to earn his Master of Laws in Taxation.   In 1978, he returned to North Carolina to become the first director of the Lumbee River Legal Services, a poverty law office in Pembroke. He helped merge the tri-school board into one school board so every school got equal funding. He was also part of the group who attempted to get the Lumbee tribe fed --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Following a service of 3 years, A.C. honorably left the Air Force and sought to further his education at Thomas Nelson Community College. There he began to gain interest in politics during the 2008 Presidential Campaign as the possibility of the nation electing the first black President. Soon after the election, A.C. began reflecting on the policies of the new Democratic Party finding that his core values did not align with the #Democrats, but the #Republicans. Today A.C. works in cyber security for Newport News Shipbuilding where he focuses on keeping our Naval assets safe against enemy threats. He lives in Hampton where he serves as Vice-Chairman of the Hampton Republican Party. The fourth of six parts of our interview with James Lindgren, an Honorable Mention in this year's John Lyman Prize, his book Preserving Maritime America looks at six maritime museums. In this episode we discuss The Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Virginia . The United States has long been dependent on the seas, but Americans know little about their maritime history. While Britain and other countries have established national museums to nurture their seagoing traditions, America has left that responsibility to private institutions. In this first-of-its-kind history, James M. Lindgren focuses on a half-dozen of these great museums, ranging from Salem's East India Marine Society, founded in 1799, to San Francisco's Maritime Museum and New York's South Street Seaport Museum, which were established in recent decades. Begun by activists with unique agendas—whether overseas empire, economic redevelopment, or cultural preservation—these museums have displayed the nation's complex interrelationship with the sea. Yet they all faced chronic shortfalls, as policymakers, corporations, and everyday citizens failed to appreciate the oceans' formative environment. Preserving Maritime America shows how these institutions shifted course to remain solvent and relevant and demonstrates how their stories tell of the nation's rise and decline as a commercial maritime power. Dr. James Lindgren: https://www.plattsburgh.edu/academics/schools/arts-sciences/history/faculty/lindgren.html Preserving Maritime America: A Cultural History of the Nation's Great Maritime Museums https://www.bibliovault.org/BV.book.epl?ISBN=9781625344632 The Mariner's Museum https://www.marinersmuseum.org/ For 90 years, the history of the ocean and its relationship with humankind has been told and displayed in one of the largest maritime museums in the world. In 1930, The Mariners' Museum was brought to life by the shared vision of Archer Milton Huntington and Homer L. Ferguson. Huntington was son of railroad and shipping magnate Collis P. Huntington, who founded Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company just a few miles from the Museum. Ferguson, the head of Newport News Shipbuilding at the time of the founding, also served as The Mariners' Museum's first President.

When I matured into manhood absent of dad and mom it was only our Father, who stood in the gap and protected me from myself as well as the world. Back in May of 2012 Jeraud Norman and his son got hit by an 18 wheeler truck. This personal tragedy triggered an avalanche of events; he lost his job, his house was foreclosed, and he ended up in mounds of debt. At this point in his life, he was a single dad for the past year and a half, adopted his nephew, filed for full custody of his son, and won. This all happened a year after he left his job at Newport News Shipbuilding where he graduated at the top of his class as an Apprentice. And later became a supervisor of the nuclear power plant aboard the aircraft carrier CVN77 Bush. While out of work, he desperately tried finding ways that would enable him to provide for his family when the only way he knew how was not an option. Throughout this journey, he was introduced to the world of marketing on a few occasions and realized that he needed to take it seriously. After going headfirst into sales he realized it is difficult to give things away for free. What intrigued him the most about marketing online was it made it easier to find your ideal clients to buy your product or service. It was not until he went to a conference in Las Vegas and was on a plane home that he met a woman that was selling the exact same product as him but was using online marketing to do all the selling for her. She was making over $20k a month and could care less about talking to someone about her business. She recognized the materials from the conference and said she was there too. He was grinding his tail off and was making scraps. It was at that point that he decided that he had to do the marketing thing. So, he started his own marketing company where the motto is "We Turn Strangers Into Customers Using Paid Social Media Ads" and it has been a successful business for the past four years. *** Links Website: https://www.jeraudmarketing.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JeraudGave Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Gavejeraud LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeraud-norman-59212582/ Instagram: @jeraud_gave --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/failcoach/message

I’m Jeff Tanner, Dean of the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University and this is a Strome Business Minute. The Strome College of Business’s Dragas Economics Center recently held its 25th Forecasting Project luncheon. Generally, the expectation for our region is good, with economic growth outpacing the nation’s for this year. Key to our expansion is federal spending, particularly on defense. Of course, Newport News Shipbuilding has carrier and submarine contracts that will support growth for a decade or longer. Overall, defense spending contributes forty percent to our economy, whether directly or indirectly. There are two ways to respond to this opportunity. The first is most likely to happen and that is to sit back and enjoy it. The second, which I prefer, is recognize that elections have consequences and take this opportunity to expand and diversify before defense budgets are cut. To learn more, visit odu.edu/business. I’m Jeff Tanner, Dean of the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University and this is a Strome Business Minute. Huntington Ingalls, parent of Newport News Shipbuilding, saw a significant increase in short-sales during the first two weeks of December. Short sales are an investment where you borrow stock and sell it. When the loan is due, you have to give stock back, so you hope the price goes down so you can buy it back and repay the loan with lower-cost shares. Your profit is the difference. Buy a stock at ten dollars, sell at eight, and you make two dollars. Short sales increased over twenty percent in the first half of December for Huntington Ingalls, which means more people think the stock will go down. However, total short sales only represent about two point three percent of the outstanding shares. To find out more, visit odu.edu/business. While the economy seems to be slowing, Virginia is adding jobs. Virginia’s unemployment rate is at the lowest in eighteen years, two point seven percent, compared to three point five percent nationally. Hampton Roads unemployment is about the same as Virginia at two point eight percent. The number of Virginians working, four point four million, is the highest ever. If a slowdown results in job losses elsewhere, Virginia should remain employed, if skills can match the needs of Amazon and Newport News Shipbuilding. Americans are less likely than ever to move from depressed areas to new locales to find work, so we may have to grow our own, something we should be able to do between our colleges and transitioning military personnel.
