Welcome to another episode of The Coral Capital Podcast, a show where we bring on guests from tech, business, politics, and culture to talk about all things Japan. In this episode we are joined by Brian Yun, Co-founder and CEO of Woodstock, a Coral portfolio company building a social trading app with the mission to empower the next generation to create a better financial future. Brian has a phenomenal career leading up to Woodstock. While in college, he  began working as a hardware design engineer at AMD. After graduation, he took on roles in equities trading at Barclays, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley. He later led the  sales finance and strategy at Twitter (now X) for Japan and Korea, then transitioned to Coinbase to drive their Japan expansion. A graduate of the University of Waterloo in Computer Engineering and an MBA honors graduate from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Brian combines deep expertise in technology and finance. Willkommen zurück im Isolations-Bespaßungs-Programm mit Rafael und Ann-Sophie. Diese Woche im Angebot haben wir zwei ehemalige Sneak-Filme aus letztem Jahr im Gepäck und beide haben mit einem Raubüberfall zu tun. Davon brilliert der eine, während der andere eher so ein bisschen müde zur Seite gelegt werden kann. Wir dürfen vorstellen: Folge 29 von Daumenkino featuring Widows und Ocean's Eight. Die gute Nachricht vorweg: Widows ist wirklich gut. Hat hier in Deutschland deutlich weniger Marketing und Aufmerksamkeit bekommen als Ocean's Eight, was sich leider im kommerziellen Erfolg widerspiegelt. Steve McQueen (der Director, nicht der bereits verstorbene Schauspieler) schafft mit seinem spannenden Thriller ein sehr gelungenen Kinofilm. Vier Frauen, die ihre professionellen Räuber-Ehemänner bei ihrem letzten Überfall verloren haben, raufen sich zusammen um gemeinsam deren zuletzt geplanten Einbruch durchzuführen. Natürlich nicht aus Jux und Tollerei, sondern weil einer der beraubten Opfer sein Geld von einer der Frauen wiederhaben möchte, und dabei nicht sonderlich freundlich auftritt. Viola Davis, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Elizabeth Debicki und viele weitere namenhafte Hollywood-Größen sind dabei und der stimmungsvolle Soundtrack von Hans Zimmer gibt dem ganzen Film eine düstere und spannungsgeladene Atmosphäre. Hat uns sehr gut gefallen, deshalb eine große Empfehlung von uns an euch. Ocean's Eight ist im Endeffekt Ocean's Eleven mit femininem Anstrich. Die Geschichte wurde leicht abgewandelt, damit sie einigermaßen in das weibliche Klischeebild passt. Auch hier lässt sich der Cast nicht lumpen: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter und viele weitere (Cameos) mehr. Mehr spannendes gibt es dann allerdings auch nicht zu sagen. Seichte Blockbuster Unterhaltung für einen entspannten Abend ist es allemal. Und witzig ist er an der ein oder anderen Stelle auch. Wer dennoch Lust auf einen richtigen Heist-Movie hat sollte definitiv mit Widows anfangen, die Stimmung, die Bilder, der Cast, der Spannungsbogen sind genau das, was man sich bei einem Film der Art wünscht.

What happened to Newton East? Find out how the inhabitants of one of Auckland's oldest suburbs have been brought back to life by the creators of the children's book "Barkell and Mr Arkell". When Lynnie Howcroft started researching the history of her neighbourhood she uncovered a whole cast of characters and stories whose contribution to early Auckland is a distant memory if not completely forgotten. The story in the book is based around Daniel Arkell, a bottler who took a shot at the Auckland mayoralty in 1901 and the various people he meets with his dog Barkell. Lynnie is joined by co-creator Elianna Gabriel, a secondary school teacher who immediately saw the potential in couching an important piece of local history in a story for children. The authors discuss the motivation behind this as not only an engaging way to present this story but also to inspire and provide the tools for young people to go about their own research. Rounding out the discussion are graphic artist and illustrator S'Wee H'ng and Jade Oskar Harvey. Recorded live at the Auckland Central Library on 17 July 2019. The Mayor and Flonk review "Ocean's 11", the classic example of a remake being WAY better than its source material. Unfortunately, the remake doesn't take place on New Year's Eve, so we're stuck doing this one. I hope you like Dean Martin and casual racism. WE DON'T. Programming note: Ocean's Eight came out WAY sooner than I thought it was going to when we recorded this. For some reason, I thought it was months away, and it turned out to be month away. We talk about the strength of the cast in Ocean's Eight, especially with the film's focus on character. We talk about the cinematography in both films, with the strength of cinematography in Ocean's Eleven and the straightforward, functional camerawork in Ocean's Eight. We talk about the possible "coming out" of the characters in Ocean's Eight and other films, like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We then talk about certain characters in both films who don't fully work as well rounded individuals, then also praising key performances. Our discussion then moves into a discussion about pace in both films.
