Old Scratch Pizza in Dayton, Ohio, had a huge year in 2024. The Dayton pizza company opened its fourth location in a revitalized fire station. And in November, the pizzeria took home three Pizza Today PIE Awards: Pizzeria of the Year – Midwest Region, Most Interesting Menu and Most Unique Pizzeria Location. We sat down with owner and founder Eric Soller and Executive Chef Josh Swinford to find out more about the red-hot pizza company. We talk about the pizzeria's employee-centric approach, it's Midwest Neapolitan-ish pizza, logistics of its growth, what real estate works for the concept, scratch menu, commissary and more. Learn more about at Old Scratch Pizza at https://www.oldscratchpizza.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/oldscratchpizza/. More on Old Scratch Pizza from a release:Established in 2016, Old Scratch Pizza has become synonymous with exceptional pizza, creative wood-fired vegetables, and a large selection of regional craft beers. With a focus on quality, hospitality, and innovation, Old Scratch strives to be a local and regional restaurant community leader. Old Scratch currently has four locations in Southwestern Ohio - Downtown Dayton, Centerville, Beavercreek, and Troy.Rooted in the classic Neapolitan style pizza, Old Scratch pizzas redefine tradition in a “Midwesternly Neapolitan” style. While still serving classics like the Margherita or Prosciutto Arugula, many of their pizzas feature more familiar ingredients like pepperoni, bacon, or the signature housemade hot honey. Wood-fired roasted vegetables, not-your-average salads, and 20 rotating taps of local craft beer round out the menu offerings. The original Old Scratch Pizza was opened in 2016 by owners Eric and Stephanie Soller in a converted mechanic's garage in Downtown Dayton, OH, and the concept has since grown to include locations in Centerville, Beavercreek, and Troy, Ohio. Every restaurant has a distinct visual identity, celebrating its roots while remaining faithful to the essence of Old Scratch. All of their locations offer an open kitchen and communal "beer hall" style seating, creating a shared space where guests can connect with family and friends, embodying the spirit of the Old Scratch community.
What The Riff?!? makes another scary trip down the Halloween rabbit hole with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre. We hope you enjoy this third edition of "Halloween" from What the Riff?!? Highway to Hell by AC/DC The opening track to the 1979 album of the same name features Bon Scott on his last album as lead singer of the group before his untimely death. The name of the song was inspired by the group's gruesome touring schedule.Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue The Crue's 1983 breakthrough album of the same name would establish them as one of the most successful metal bands of the 80's. The song was controversial, with many believing that it encouraged devil worship, though the lyrics themselves do not explicitly do so.Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins Off their breakout album "Siamese Dream," this song references "the killer in me is the killer in you" is inspired by Billy Corgan's contemplation of his negligent parents and suicide. The lyrics "cut that little child" caused the song to be banned by the BBC.Demons by Imagine Dragons This song off Imagine Dragons' major label debut studio album became their second top 10 single. It is really not about demons in the Halloween sense, but more the tragedies of life like abuse, PTSD, and mental illness.Voodoo by Godsmack The third single from Godsmack's self-titled debut album was inspired by Wes Craven's film “The Serpent and the Rainbow.” This song became Dave Bautista's theme song as Leviathan when he was in the WWE. Mommy's Little Monster by Social Distortion The title track from Social Distortion's debut album tells a horror tale of a kid becoming a punk rocker. It is another song about dealing with personal demons rather than the supernatural. Witch Wolf by Styx Early in their career Styx put out this song to lead off their third album, “The Serpent is Rising.” James Young takes lead vocal duties on this song that tells about a person accursed by a creature called the witch wolf, and night rider.Dragula by Rob Zombie The lead single from Rob Zombie's debut album may be his biggest hit. The audio clip at the beginning of the song is taken from the 1960 horror film “The City of the Dead.” The name comes from the TV sitcom "The Munsters," where Grandpa Munster has a dragster called "Drag-u-la."The theme to the TV series "Twilight Zone" This menagerie of bizarre tales from the early days of TV still has staying power in our sci-fi culture. Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger walks us through a discussion with Old Scratch himself in this well-known classic from the Stones' catalogue. The idea is a narrative from Satan's point of view as he reviews historical events. That Old Black Magic by Frank Sinatra Old Blue Eyes gave us this romantic song with a Halloween bent. It was a jazz classic originally written in 1942 with lyrics penned by Johnny Mercer. Love is "that old black magic" in this tune.Night of the Vampire by Roky Erickson From this cult classic album "The Evil One," this song is one of a plethora of horror-oriented tracks on the album. Erickson spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. The Kill (Bury Me) by Thirty Seconds to Mars Jared Leto, front man for the group (and perhaps better known as an actor today), has said this song is about the relationship you have with yourself, and confronting the dark side of who you are.Take Me to Church by Hozier This haunting hit song compares falling in love with a kind of death, and compares the lover to a kind of religion. After a brief leave of absence, we are back and starting at the beginning. Old Scratch himself slithers up to our first parents and immediately starts twisting the language. From conflating God's words to using a different name for God himself, the snake puts a slippery wedge between humanity and reality. It worked, btw. That and Josh has a youth group flashback while Rick gets misunderstood.

Happy Halloween! He's Clare, a baron with a very expensive contractor's bill and a suspicious number of black armbands in his wardrobe. She's Lucy, a sheltered seventeen year old girl with a big inheritance and absolutely no friends anywhere. What a great combination! It's Greygallows by Barbara Michaels, who is also Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Mertz and probably a ton of other names - you may remember that we did an episode on her Devil May Care last year for Halloween, and that book has a guest appearance from the actual Christian devil! Old Scratch! The Father of Lies! The Prince of Darkness! This one, sadly, does not - but it's a delightful read and a great book for spooky season. Fair warning, it includes some extremely realistic and therefore disturbing depictions of spousal abuse, most notably the scariest gaslighting I've seen in a book in a long time but also financial, emotional, and physical abuse with some attempted murder thrown in. It's not gratuitous at all - it's very well done and the heroine's legal helplessness under 19th century British law is definitely a major point of the book, but it is definitely going to hit too close to home for some people.
In this episode, your intrepid cohosts learn why they need to get literate. "Bible literate," to be exact. According to author and Bible teacher Jen Wilkin, Bible literacy is a vital tool when it comes to apologetics—and "Bible literacy" is not the same thing as "biblical literacy." Biblical literacy means knowing about the Bible. Bible literacy requires knowing the Bible itself, and Bible literacy is part of what every Christian needs to be able to defend the faith. In the process of getting themselves some Bible literateness, Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones talk with Jen Wilkin about why there are so few women apologists, why Timothy will never write another book about the end of time, and whether or not it's possible for there to be too many extended guitar solos. (Spoiler alert: there is no such thing as too many guitar solos or a guitar solo that's too long.) Jen offers to play xylophone with the rock band Queen, and Garrick reveals a heretofore-unknown secret about Jen's singing abilities. In the segment known as Indiana, Jones, and the Raiders of Church History, the dynamic duo places a domesticated feline into battle against a king's shield. The cat survives, but only because of its longstanding concordat with Old Scratch himself. Timothy and Garrick also learn the word "strapwork," and "Strapwork" would be the perfect name for a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS AND GUEST Jen Wilkin is an author and Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas and the Executive Director of Care, Family, and Next Gen Ministries at the Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. She has organized and led studies for women in home, church, and parachurch contexts. An advocate for Bible literacy, her passion is to see others become articulate and committed followers of Christ, with a clear understanding of why they believe what they believe, grounded in the Word of God. Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, In Church as It Is in Heaven, and Christian History Made Easy. Garrick Bailey is a Ph.D. student in systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, studying Herman Bavinck and Roman Catholicism under the supervision of Gregg Allison. Ralph Sarchie is a retired NYPD Sargent and an active Traditionalist Catholic Demonologist and Exorcist. Ralph's story can be found in the book Deliver Us From Evil, which was also converted into a film of the same name. Ralph refers to his efforts as a police officer as “the Job”, calling his work as a Demonologist and Exorcist “the Work”.Ralph joins me, Rachel White, host of the Skeptical Shaman and owner of TOTEM Readings, to discuss the phenomenon of evil: what it is, why it matters, and why we should care in a woo world intent on ignoring the dark side. Ralph describes his journey with demonology, exorcism and traditional Catholicism more broadly. He mentions several key mentors and teachers, including Ed and Loraine Warren (of Amityville fame) and Father Malachi Martin, a Jesuit priest that translated portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Ralph also explains the difference between his Catholic Church and the one headquartered in Rome. At which point, of course, Rachel just had to make her standard joke about the Papal Audience Hall being designed in the shape of a giant snake with a snakey, firey statue flanking a bunch of dudes dressed up as evil Nazi wizards from some yet-to-be-screened Star Wars movie. It's a classic.Whether you're a hard core Catholic or spiritually-homeless agnostic, this discussion is all about the importance of prioritizing your spiritual life…and what happens when you put material concerns above all others.Ralph is a legitimate kind soul and open-minded guy, and we're grateful he spent some time with us at The Skeptical Shaman.TOTEM Readings Website: https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Tarot Deck: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578980126?ref=myi_title_dpTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comRalph Sarchie's Book, Deliver Us From Evil: https://a.co/d/eukZMltPlease note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. We start the new year with an old foe. Satan, Mephistopheles, Old Scratch, Beelzebub, Beelz to his friends. that's right we begin our epic journey to the dark side with the Spanish Inquisition. A time where the Catholic Church decided that it didn't want to play with anyone else. 32,000 people would be executed under the inquisition, an organization that killed its last victim in the 1800's and technically is still in existence to this very day.

In this episode we follow up Fun Satanic Hoaxes by looking at how Lord of Flies is used by the dark side of the force. Demonstrably dishonest diatribe, designed to deceive damage and destroy distributed by disingenuous dickheads driving division dissention and dividends as always been a thing. I don't know how long it was between the first human inventing the first god and then coming up with the first devil but I'd bet you could count it in minutes. We look at some of the hoaxes where Satan has been thrown into the mix to maximize harm and or profit. Like the persistent rumors' that various company CEO's like McDonald's founder Ray Croc and fashion designer Liz Claiborne have appeared on Phil Donahue, The Jenny Jones Show, Sally Jesse Raphael and Oprah professing their love of the devil admitting to donating company money to Anton LeVay's Church of Satan!Household goods company Proctor & Gamble have been battling an urban legend that paints the company as a conduit for Beelzebub for over 50 years now! What makes this hoax interesting is not the overly stimulated pattern recognition mind and wilful ignorance of your average conspiracy theorist but WHO kept it alive. We'll look at ridiculous claims about non-alcoholic grape juice in the Bible by temperance fundamentalists Al and Alice Lunden and how the Prince of Darkness himself has misguided the Catholic Church in its transubstantiation rituals. And we'll hear from corporate copywriter and Electronic Voice Phenomenon pundit Roderick Millington who claims to have Old Scratch's voice on tape! We'll also mention, Jim, Dan and Steve Peters of the Zion Christian Life Center in Minnesota, problematic columnist, author, commentator and former Alice Cooper roadie, Bob Greene, Multi Level marketing company Amway and pasteurization innovator and hero of the Underground Railroad, Thomas Bramwell Welch.

Today is Friday, June 10th, 2022, which means that today is your weekly news roundup. As always, a lot happened last week that you'll want to hear about, and there's a lot of stuff to do in Dayton tonight, this weekend, and beyond, so listen soon so you don't miss out on what's happening in Dayton. As always, you can find the full transcript for News Roundup episodes on the podcast website at discoverdaytonpodcast.com. Organizations mentioned in this episode include: Dayton Public Schools Greater Dayton RTA Dayton International Airport Dayton Daily News Ohio Statehouse Wright-Patterson Regional Council of Governments Central State University Wright State University University of Cincinnati Sinclair Community College Day Air Ballpark City of Dayton Tumble, LLC Blind Bob's The Dublin Pub Thai 9 Lily's WheatPenny Salar Franco's Trolley Stop Van Buren Room Table 33 Mudlick Tap House Dayton Beer Company Old Scratch Jimmie's Ladder 11 Fifth Street Brewpub Coco's Bistro Basil's on Market Angie's Firehouse Tavern Carmichael's Slyder's Toxic Brew Company Levitt Pavilion Bribing Senators Neil deGrasse Tyson Dayton Live For Dayton by Dayton Mike Bankhead Dayton Masonic Center St. Anne's Hill Historic Society St. Anne's Cheese Company Evan's Bakery Dayton Metro Library Patterson Pub Front Street Liederkranz-Turner German Club Dayton Jewish Cultural Festival Dayton Jazz Festival Paul Laurence Dunbar House Isaiah Sharkey The Loft Theatre Dayton Celtic Festival Dayton Philharmonic Oregon District Mumu Fresh Transcript: Hello and welcome to the Discover Dayton podcast, the show that's all about the Gem City's past, present, and future. I'm your host, Arch Grieve, and today is Friday, June 10th, 2022, which means this is your weekly news roundup episode, where I read the news (so you don't have to). A lot has happened in the past week, including some local Dayton organizations receiving state funding, Dayton getting a new state senator next year who it never voted for, and a troubling statistic for local letter carriers. There's also a lot happening in the coming days that you're going to want to hear about, so stay tuned for your weekly news roundup episode, which starts in just a moment. And now for last week's news: Well Welcome Stadium is getting an $11 million renovation, which Dayton Public Schools officials say they hope will help make it a more attractive venue for other state and national athletic events. The stadium opened in 1949 and had its last renovation in 2008, which was around $3 million. While the project won't be completed for over a year, DPS does expect to have new turf, track, and lighting to be ready in time for fall games this year. One addition is going to be a new hall of fame of past DPS athletes. The groundbreaking took place this past Wednesday and the renovations have already begun. The Greater Dayton RTA has announced that 10 lines that were suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic will be permanently canceled, while 11 others are being reconfigured. The move comes as the RTA is facing a driver shortage and decreased ridership. Affected bus routes include routes 3, 5, 23, 24, 64, 65, 66, X1A, X1B, and X5. Starting later this fall, however, the RTA will be switching from having separate bus route schedules for weekdays vs. weekends to having the same schedule every day for their bus routes. There are also currently 50 job openings for bus drivers, and today from 7-11am and tomorrow from 10am to 2pm at the University of Dayton arena there will be a job fair for people who are interested in applying where you can apply to become a big-bus driver (which requires a CDL) or a small bus driver (which does not). The coolest thing about the event is that you can actually have an opportunity to drive one of the buses, so I may end up going and applying too, who knows. Visit iriderta.org for more information. And, speaking of busing and Dayton Public Schools, DPS is reversing a previous decision to end the practice of giving RTA passes to high school students and is now saying that high school students will, in fact, be receiving RTA passes to get to school. DPS also explained that because high school students will no longer receive busing from DPS, they can attend any school within the district and are not bound by the quadrant system that is in place for elementary and middle schools where students must attend schools that are within the quadrant in which they live. If you have questions about busing you can call the Student Enrollment Center at 937-542-5555. Well if you're flying out of Dayton International Airport anytime soon just be warned, the airport recently had an airfare hike that was not only among the highest in the country, it IS the highest price hike in the country. The study comes from cheapair.com, and finds that on average Dayton airport flyers are paying 42% more per ticket than last year, which averages out to $109 per flight. The increase comes as part of a trend of smaller airports increasing their rates across the country. After seeing demand drop during the pandemic, it has been on the rise recently, but airlines are struggling to find people for the reopened positions that were cut during the pandemic. One thing that I didn't realize until I was reading a Dayton Daily News story this week was that once the redistricting changes go into effect next year, most of Dayton will have a new state senator who it didn't vote for, which will be State Senator Niraj Antani. This is due to the fact that the majority of what is now Senator Stephen Huffman's district is being transferred to Niraj Antani's, although only until new maps can be drawn up for the 2024 election. However, if Dayton is redistricted once more to another district that does not have a senator up for re-election, it's possible Dayton could go for eight years without being able to vote for their state senator. Antani is a very conservative Republican state senator from Miamisburg who has the distinction of being the state's first Indian-American senator in Ohio history. In related news, the Ohio Statehouse has passed a bill funding $3.5 billion in state capital projects, with $18.6 million of that funding going to Montgomery County. Of that, $1.7 million will go towards projects at Central State, Wright State, and the University of Cincinnati. The biggest recipient by far, however, is Sinclair Community College, which (for the sake of full disclosure), is where I also work part-time. Sinclair though is getting $13 million, with $5 million going towards Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Trades training hubs, and $4 million to cover the cost of installing fire sprinkler systems. The Dayton International Airport and Sinclair also requested $250K for an aircraft mechanic training center, which was fully funded, unlike some other local projects, including a $5 million request by the City of Dayton for Day Air Ballpark, which only received a tenth of that. Well there's a new local government entity in town, or towns, rather. The Wright-Patterson Regional Council of Governments came together recently and is made up of six communities: Dayton, Beavercreek, Fairborn, Riverside, Huber Heights, and Bath Township. The Council will have powers similar to Ohio municipalities, including making purchases, passing zoning laws, and establishing Tax Increment Financing districts. US Representative Mike Turner helped secure $1 million in funding for the creation of the Council, which is aimed at improving the lives of US Air Force members around the base. The council is composed of members who are local city managers or other high-ranking administrators in their respective communities. This next story brings back some uncomfortable memories I have being a former Dayton Power and Light meter reader years ago, but apparently Dayton ranks 22nd in the country for dogs biting postal workers, with 18 postal worker dog bites happening last year. Ohio itself actually ranks third in the country as a state for dog bites, with Columbus coming in on top with 31 letter carrier dog bites. So please, make sure your dogs are taken care of properly. I can attest from personal experiences that it's really not fun getting bit. Well if you're lazy like I am, although possibly have more disposable income, then there's a new local business that will come to your home and pick up your clothes and wash them and return them to you. The business is called Tumble LLC, and it was started by Miami University classmates Jeffrey Caldwell II and Charles Wheeler III. The new business recently received a Better Business Bureau award, the Spark Award for Entrepreneurship, which “celebrates emerging entrepreneurial businesses whose leaders demonstrate a high level of character, generate a culture that is authentic about its mission and genuinely connects with their community." The business is partnering with local laundromats to help cut down on their own overhead and to schedule a pickup you can visit tumblego.com. And finally, while not exactly news, it was noted by my friend Alexis Larsen in a Dayton Daily News article last week that it's patio season again in Dayton, so here are some great places to visit that have great patios where you can grab a drink and something to eat. In the Oregon District for food and drink you've got Blind Bob's, The Dublin Pub, Thai 9, Lily's, WheatPenny, Salar, Franco's, and Trolley Stop. If you're just looking for drinks, Bell of Dayton's Van Buren Room is a great place to visit as well. Outside the Oregon District but still downtown there's Table 33, Mudlick Tap House, Dayton Beer Company (which has a cool new rooftop bar), Old Scratch, Jimmie's Ladder 11, Fifth Street Brewpub, Coco's Bistro, and Basil's on Market, if you want to have a cool view of the fountains. A little further outside of downtown and you can check out Angie's Firehouse Tavern, Carmichael's, and Slyder's as well. That's it for your local news, and now, here's what's happening tonight, this weekend, and beyond: One thing happening all weekend is the celebration of Toxic Brew Company's 9th birthday. Events kicked off yesterday with a special tapping of their Bubblegum Blonde and Coffee Belgian Golden Ale beers. Today they're tapping their Melon ISO-Heaven, and tomorrow they're tapping their Mango Magnum Hop PIPA. Also there will be Chef Dane and on Sunday you can hear music by Cooley the Curator. Toxic opens at 2pm today and noon on the weekends. So happy birthday, Toxic! In this episode we will be looking at the shaping of Satan in the 1st century Chri$tian writings. There is a plethora of early Chri$tian writings on our favourite subject. For now we are sticking to canonical scripture but that is not to say the non-canonical stuff isn't relevant. It paints a picture of the mindset of the early Chri$tians. In the King James Version of the New Testament the word Devil or Devils comes up 102 times. Satan gets mentioned 32 times. There are also other synonyms used to describe Lucifer. Despite all the mentions he doesn't get a lot of screen time and is mostly an off-screen character, spoken of but rarely seen like Voldemort or Sauron. I won't be covering every mention of Lord of Flies but will look at the ones where I feel who and what he is gets established for later generations to build on and create the Satan we know and love today. The New Testament is not JUST 4 similar stories about the same events. There are also a bunch of internal church memos and other documents bundled up and paper clipped to the back of the gospels, known as the epistles. We look at the earliest mention of Old Scratch in the New Testament in the Epistle of James all the way to the Gospel of John.We watch the Satan character develop from a metaphorical representation of human desire to a little gremlin coercing events to megalomaniacal entity of enormous power. We will follow Saul of Tarsus from 1st century tentmaker who got his kicks beating up early Chri$tians on the weekends to self-proclaimed apostle Paul megalomaniacal entity of enormous power. We review the attitude of the juvenile apocalyptic cult to the antichrist and the impending end of the world with the return of their Chri$t.There's fornication with step mums, a ravenous reptilian hell beast, murder, Romans, Ancient Greeks, Hentai, Pagans, Zeus, Odin, Ahura Mazda, an attack force of shock preachers, an army of serpents and scorpions, gardening tips from Jesus, the rapture, a proxy war between YHWH and the Devil, Astro Boy even gets a mention!
Today's Friday the 13th, 2022, and it's time for your weekly News Roundup episode, where I read the news so you don't have to. A lot happened last week and there's a lot coming up in terms of local events and things to do that you won't want to miss, including things going on tonight, so don't wait to listen! As always, you can find the show notes for this episode on my website at discoverdaytonpodcast.com. Organizations mentioned in this episode include: Ohio Statehouse Central State University Sinclair Community College City of Dayton Ghostlight Coffee 2nd Street Market Gulzar's Indian Cuisine AES Five Rivers Health Centers Dayton Peace Prize Dayton Council on World Affairs Hall Hunger Initiative Heart Mercantile Mission of Mary's CSA Dayton Women's Rights Alliance Top of the Market Liftoff Entertainment Humane Society of Greater Dayton Blind Bob's Shiloh Farmer's Market NCCJ Dayton Beer Company Liederkranz-Turner German Club Salar Wiley's Five Rivers MetroParks The Neon Yellow Cab Tavern TheatreLab Dayton PNC Arts Annex Show Transcript: Hello and welcome to the Discover Dayton podcast, the show that's all about the Gem City's past, present, and future. I'm Arch Grieve and I'm your host, and today's episode is the weekly news roundup for Friday the 13th of May 2022, so if you're superstitious be careful today. There's a lot that happened last week though, including an update to Ohio's redistricting process, good news for Dayton residents on their electric bills, and the opening of some new places to eat downtown, as well as lots of stuff to do this weekend and beyond, so stay tuned! And now for last week's news: Well, the news about the Ohio congressional district maps isn't great, as towards the end of last week the Republican-dominated Ohio Redistricting Commission voted down a set of maps drawn up by the consultants that they hired, and then immediately voted to approve a set of maps that the Ohio Supreme Court has already declared unconstitutional. Protestors in attendance yelled “shame,” at the commission members, but their cries were ineffective in causing any type of change amongst the members because the Republican members of the commission have no shame. Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who is a commission member, explained his rationale for supporting the third set of maps by claiming that it would be the easiest set of maps for local boards of elections to use. At the end of the meeting, Democratic Minority House Leader Allison Russo read out a “minority report,” which laid the blame for the redistricting process mess at the feet of her Republican counterparts. Also happening at the state level right now is discussion around a bill that would put an end to local municipalities' abilities to manage short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs. House Bill 563 is currently being debated at the Ohio Statehouse, with opponents of the bill saying that it would take away home rule from cities and curtail their ability to self-govern, so now is your time to contact your local representative or senator if you have an opinion about it. Central State University's Dayton Campus is getting a cash infusion from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which is awarding the HBCU $3.6 million in ARPA funds to quote, “tackle workplace shortages,” which have been made worse by the pandemic. Much of the money will go towards funding workshops that are geared towards educating students about advanced materials, advanced manufacturing, IT, and advanced data management. Central State is also putting in an additional nearly $90K towards its Workforce Training and Business Development Center, which will specialize in employment-related training. As a result of the expansion, Central State is expecting a 50% increase in enrollment this fall and expects to go from 2,000 students to 3,000 who are physically attending campus classes, and from 4,000 to 7,000 students attending online. Just for full transparency for this next story, I need to acknowledge that I am a Sinclair employee, but Sinclair has had some good news recently in that it graduated a record number of students at last week's graduation ceremony, with 8,919 students being awarded degrees or certificates, or a 14% increase over last year. Of those, a record number were also black men, 1,548 students to be exact, as well as a record number of minority students at just over 3,000. There's good news for Dayton residents recently from the city, which is that they recently announced that residents will be getting 100% renewable energy starting in June of this year which will be 30% cheaper than AES Ohio's standard service rate, which is the company that used to be DP&L. They also assured residents that Dayton will not be impacted by the recent rate hikes proposed by AES thanks to the new aggregation program. Savings are expected to average approximately $300 per Dayton customer over the 12-month period that the deal is in effect, for a total of $10 million combined for all residents in savings. If you wish to participate in the program, you don't have to do anything, but if you wish to opt-out then letters are being sent out soon. There's good news for Ghostlight Coffee fans, which is that you can now find them on weekends at the 2nd Street Market. They're opening a bagel bakery there called DOUGH. Ghostlight owner, Shane Anderson, told the Dayton Daily News that he always wanted to have a location in the market, but that there was already a coffee shop there. However, they learned recently that there was an opening for a sandwich shop, so they put forward the concept of a bagel soup and sandwich shop, and now they're in the soft opening phase of its existence. They plan to release more items moving forward, but you can also find them at their original location on Wayne Ave. or over next to Old Scratch on Patterson Blvd. They'll also soon be coming to the Dayton Arcade. In other news-related food, I'm sure many of you will be as excited as I am to learn that there's a new Indian restaurant in downtown Dayton now. The family-owned Gulzar's Indian Cuisine opened last Thursday at 217 N. Patterson, just across from the Dragon's stadium and next to Winans and Flyboys. Wife and husband Deepika and Jay Singh co-manage the restaurant together, and Jay's brother manages the family's other restaurant in Richmond, Indiana. The restaurant features authentic Indian cuisine, including my favorite, chicken tikka masala, but if you're looking for their most authentic dishes you can find those on the menu under Chef Specials. They also have a lunch buffet, which is $13.99. You can find their menu and learn more at gulzarsindiancuisine.com. I just had lunch there earlier this week and I definitely recommend it! There's a new Five Rivers Health Centers campus in the Edgemont neighborhood of Dayton after they held its grand opening Wednesday of this week. The campus location will provide a number of different health services, including dental care, women's health, sports medicine, eye care, and primary care. After being founded just over ten years ago, Five Rivers Health Centers now has 9 locations geared towards providing health services to low-income residents. The new facility is now accepting patients, and you can learn more at fiverivershealthcenters.org. Last week former Congressman and Ambassador, Tony Hall, received the Dayton Peace Prize, which is awarded jointly by the Dayton Council on World Affairs and the Dayton Peace Prize Selection Committee. Hall was a US Congressman from 1979 to 2002, after which he served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture. He also started the Hall Hunger Initiative here in Dayton. Past recipients of the award include President Bill Clinton, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Well if you're in the Oregon District looking for Heart Mercantile then you'll need to find them in their new location, which is on the other side of the street from their old one. They're now at 601 E. Fifth St. across from Trolley Stop in a space that's double the size of their old location. Also starting today, they are now open one hour later every day, with hours from 11:00am to 8:00pm now. Learn more at heartmercantile.com. If you're in the market for sustainable, locally-grown produce, then you might want to check out Mission of Mary's CSA, or community-supported agriculture. Their CSA program runs from this month until November of this year, with pickups every Wednesday from 2:00-6:00pm. You can sign up to get vegetables weekly from them on their website at missionofmary.org. And finally, before we get to the more fun events happening this weekend and beyond, there's also a Rally for Abortion Rights at Courthouse Square this Saturday, May 14th from 2:00-3:00pm. You can learn more about the event on the Dayton Women's Rights Alliance on Facebook or end40days on Instagram. All right, and now for things to do in Dayton: If you're looking for a drive-in movie experience but don't want to travel very far, you can go and see the Princess Bride tonight at Top of the Market Banquet Center, which is hosting a pop-up drive-in movie screening in conjunction with Liftoff Entertainment. The cost is $30-40 per vehicle and the lot opens at 7:30pm with the movie starting at 8:45pm. You can visit the show notes on my website for the link to purchase tickets, which is a long EventBrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wheels-and-reels-princess-bride-tickets-321481538937 If you're more in the mood for music tonight, you can head over to Blind Bob's for a show that starts at 9:00pm. Performing tonight will be Jon Snodgrass, DL Burdon, Joe Anderl, and Josh Goldman. The cover is $10. Pet lovers who enjoy walking or running with their animals are in luck this weekend as the Furry Skurry 5K event is happening Saturday, May 14th, from 8:00am-noon. General Admission is a $40 registration fee. After you're done running (or if you don't want to run at all) there will also be a beverage tent with bloody marys, mimosas, wine, and beer, as well as a pancake breakfast and more. This fundraising event is put on by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, and you can find tickets at hsdayton.org/events. Also happening on Saturday is the 2022 opening day for the Shiloh Farmers Market, which takes place at 5300 Philadelphia Dr from 9:00am to 2:00pm. In addition to the veggies you can purchase, the Smokin' Barrels Food Truck will be there as well. Another thing you can do Saturday is participate in the Pride Rocks! suicide prevention program, where you can join in rock painting, enjoy a free meal, participate in educational programming about mental health, and listen to LGBTQ+ musicians. The event is free to attend, and goes from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Levitt Pavilion. The event is put on by the NCCJ, or the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Dayton. And there's more happening tomorrow, including the Dayton Beer Company's 10th anniversary celebration, which goes from noon to 11:00pm Saturday, May 14th. The event promises to have fun for the whole family, including the little ones, with live entertainment, games, and more. So cheers to 10 years to the Dayton Beer Company! And if that wasn't enough, you can also visit the Liederkranz-Turner's Biergarten on Saturday from 5:00-10:00pm. Trivia is back, and there are now over 70 German beers you can try. Food is available, and there are games and activities for people of all ages. If you'd like to see the Dayton Playhouse's production of “Hello Dolly,” the only remaining tickets the last I checked were for Saturday night at 8:00pm, so visit daytonplayhouse.com soon for info on how to get tickets. And finally moving on to Sunday, May 15th, you can stop at the 2nd Street Market if you've been collecting pop tabs, which of course were invented here in Dayton, and participate in Tab-a-PULL-Ooza, which is a family-friendly event that benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Dayton. There's a competition to see who has the most tabs, although to be honest I couldn't find what you'll win, but it all goes towards a good cause. Also happening Sunday is a SUNDAYton Tea dance, where you can go to the Bar and Bistro and participate in a tea dance hosted by Dayton drag queens. This Sunday's show will feature Jessica Marie Jones, Jackie O, MAGESTIK, and Dana Sintell. The event takes place from 4:00-7:00pm and the cost ranges from free to $10 to attend. After a few words on current events, Pascual takes us on a tour of tales about Old Scratch influencing music. Whether he's giving free violin lessons, defending himself in court, or even hanging out with Anton LaVey and Sammy Davis Jr., the devil has a longstanding relationship with music of all types.

Most who explore the tumbleweed town of Frontierland on the opposite shore spare little more than a glance for the landscape beyond, but we who have known its Magic head for the docks at the edge of Thunder Mesa, eager to board a raft headed for the outskirts of Tom Sawyer Island. There is something spiritual, a palpable shift that happens when we board our river raft and leave the mainland of the Magic Kingdom behind. It is a sense of intentional departure…a quest! We are embarking on an adventure into the sovereign state of childhood daydreams, where boundless imaginations and inexhaustible summer afternoons meant uninhibited exploration. It is a place where we are invited to remember what it felt like to wonder so expansively, to wander so freely and fearlessly, creating worlds far more rich with possibility than the ones we inhabited. Arriving at Huck's Landing, we find ourselves standing on an unassuming wooden dock overlooking the sprawling Kingdom beyond. Suddenly, in a place where every detail has not been contrived for us, our imaginations whir into action, imposing context and stirring memories to fill in these very deliberate gaps. (6:36) Winding pathways and lush, overgrown trees entice our curiosity, and even the steady rainfall could not squelch that delight so reminiscent of youth. Jump in a puddle - we dare you! It's good for the soul. Around Here, a rainy day only adds to the mystery and excitement, and we have a feeling we're about to encounter plenty of both. (8:30) Named for the man who penned the tales of Tom Sawyer and his friends, Fort Langhorne pays tribute to Samuel Longhorn Clemens, more popularly recognized by his pen name: Mark Twain. A fortress accessible only by suspension bridge, Fort Langhorne holds surprises around every corner. (15:06) Inside the fort, we spot a horse barn and stables, complete with groomers keeping the animals snug and dry inside. But we who are fearless in the face of danger (and puddles) climb to the top of Fort Langhorne, scouting our trail from the lookout points and wending our way back down through the secret escape tunnel. On our way back and halfway across Superstition Bridge, we are met by breathtaking views of the Magic Kingdom. Here, we catch a glimpse of how far we've traveled, castaways onto the island of eternal youth. (29:00) Back on the main island, it seems that Tom and Huck have anticipated the arrival of kindred explorers, and have put up some very helpful sign posts to direct us this way and that. “Barrel Bridge,” “Tom and Hucks Way,” and “The Other Way” leave a lot to the imagination, but as we're guests on the imaginative playground of those two characters, it seems only fitting that we follow their sound advice. Plus, finding a quiet moment to take in a beautiful view is always our inclination, so off to the Barrel Bridge we go! (30:55) A waterside pathway along the Rivers of America, a vista of still more captivating views of Liberty Square and Frontierland stretches out before us. Jutting out into the water and creating the illusion that we are held between one world and the next, this is perhaps the most serene spot in the entire park. We are neither a part of the scene nor disconnected from it. We are simply Here, held in a suspension of disbelief, a suspension of time and reality that engulfs us so entirely in the moment, we might remain for hours or even days without losing a single second. (31:09) As if more tranquility could not be contained in a single space, we stumble upon a waterfall trickling down a hillside, a sort of creek flowing in cadence with the rain, an entrancing sort of elemental rhythm to slow our pace and give us pause. We hear the distant echo of the Liberty Belle setting sail for its sightseeing voyage, and not for the first time today, the image of a life spent blissfully in this riverbank paradise flickers across our minds like a sepia-toned memory of a reality that never was. (34:00) It is this moment, more than our arrival or any we have experienced so far, which sets the tone for the rest of our journey. It is through this lens, a sort of extended release joy, through which we watch the delighted explorers wending their way through Scavenger's Fort, their wonder enlivened with every new discovery and winding wooden trail. It is Here, in this mindfulness, that we watch an Ibis rest serenely at the edge of the creek, not wanting or worrying for anything at all. Who'd have thought that Here, on this playground inspired by Mark Twain's exuberant imagination, we would find incontrovertible peace. Magic, some might call it. (38:34) And speaking of Magic, perhaps the most spellbinding space we'll encounter on this island is not for the faint of heart (nor the helplessly claustrophobic). Old Scratch's Mystery Mine is a feat of engineering, optical illusion, and a place only an imagination sustained by youth could conjure. At the dark and ominous entrance to the cavern, Tom Sawyer himself has left us a note, advising that we “keep a sharp eye out” and “dont stop for nuthin” as we call upon our courage and wander inside. Along narrow pathways we meander, our curiosity quelling any apprehension. (39:15) Up ahead, we spy a waterfall which seems to have spared no thought for such concepts us “gravity,” streaming ever upward and catching the light of dozens of glittering jewels waiting to be mined. A dazzling treasure, to be sure, but not the most priceless one we've found on our excursion to Tom Sawyer Island. Our minds retreating to what other quiet moments of joy our journey might have in store, we find reprieve from the cave's confinement in the wide open space outside and the refreshing rainfall still falling all around us. (41:19) Potter's Mill stands sentinel on the edge of the Rivers of America, charming and quaint and beautifully preserved in time. Home to several songbirds who undoubtedly have found a haven in the rafters from the “some no good” who scared them away from the grist mill nearby. (44:40) All at once retrieved from our reverie by the unmistakable clickety-clack of a runaway mine train and the even more recognizable screams of mingled fear and delight, we give way once more to that unguarded inquisition, and set off in pursuit of one last, daring adventure. (46:57) Spelunking through the Cave of the mysteriously elusive “Injun Joe,” we find a hideout sporting a fascination of fossils embedded into stone walls, which jut out and reach toward the ceiling in the oddest formations that almost resemble...faces? An eerie whistle of wind creeps through the cavern, and a bridge over a bottomless pit seems the only way through, the most bracing test of our courage thus far. Though, some satirical jungle cruise skippers might speculate that the return to civilization is far more foreboding. (49:47) And so we pluck up our courage for that great feat, and head back out into the drizzle, which seems to have lightened during our cave exploration. Harper's Mill seems to thrive on a more pervasive deluge, its water wheel churning around and around the grist mill in ceaseless earnest, collecting what it can from the low, gray clouds. A quintessential scene of the old, deep south, this scene calls to mind sprawling front porches and slow harmonica serenades. We can picture ourselves rocking away until the stars scatter the countryside sky, sipping sweet tea and listening to the childhood tales of generations. And as the Liberty Belle churns along the Rivers of America, sightseers enamored by the quaint little island they'll only ever know from afar, we wear the secret of this place like a smile. Suddenly, the idea of leaving this place is not met with fretful hesitation. It's not truly goodbye, after all, but “see you real soon.” (51:00) Like a farewell to a lifelong friend, not unlike what Tom and Huck might exchange at summer's end, we know we'll meet again someday. When that day comes, we'll pick up right where we left off (and maybe, finally, finish whitewashing that fence). For now, we've got a blissful afternoon full of memories to see us through, a wonderland of wandering to embark upon in our imagination. In the story that unfolds in every orifice of Tom Sawyer Island, we have found a place held for us in each chapter. For those of us who seek Magic in the mundane…this is our escape to Neverland, our quiet moment of suspension and joy.

Let us credit the Mormons with bringing the churches to the suburbs. For building brand new churches in a brand new world. America moves to the suburbs, and the Mormons followed suit. Because Mormonism always was a frontier religion. A religion looking west. A religion that got out ahead of the roads. A religion that saw a city in a dried-out primeval lake bed. And the rest of Christianity followed suit. But if you've noticed God doesn't quite have the sway he used to. If you've noticed prayer just isn't a punchy as it once was. If you feel like there is radio static when you tune your ear to Heaven. If you've ever felt like Old Scratch mechanized sin for the industrial age - you might consider the cost of dilution. If spreading worship and prayer, psalmody and communion across too many chapels built too quickly have spread God's grand fist too thin.
In this episode of the Monster's Lair, I get evil with the Evil One. We go back and talk about the origins of the back story, the look, and the perception of the Big Bad, the Devil, Satan. I start with his first mentions in scripture and work forward in an abridged version of Old Scratch's history and cultural significance. This message will conclude our series on Satan by looking at Luke 16:19-31 and Ephesians 2:1-10. This lesson is intended to help the audience understand that life in Christ means ultimate protection from anything that can harm us.
This is part two in our series of understanding the devil and how he works against us. I plan to use several references of scripture to help us understand that the work of the devil leads us to idolatry. Scriptures used will be from Jonah 2, Colossians 3, John 10, 1 John 5, and 2 […]
This begins a new series of teaching about the reality of the devil and how he works against the Children of God. I will use Luke 4:1-13 as we look at how Jesus used scripture to fight temptation. We also look at the source of temptation in this lesson.

Creeping Wave Radio returns for its 3.5th season, taking over The U Mind for a special 9 episode run, with some special guests you might recognize from past interviews! In this episode, Napoleon returns to Old Scratch's lair after breaking a group of wily senior citizens out of Dwindling Palms, Retirement Home for Aging Actors in Hollywood, CA. The leader of this jailbreak was none other than Dorcas Morlock, a 104 year old woman from Napoleon's past. She may hold the secret to uncovering Napoleon's lost memories, but can she be trusted? In this episode I look for our favorite super hero in Science Fiction. You might be surprised to find out just how often the devil appears in the science fiction genre. Philip K Dick actually believed he is a very real entity with actual influence in the world. Even Dr Who and Star Trek have got in bed with Old Scratch for the sake of a plot line. Find out what Chri$tians find more offensive in the Star Wars series than Jar Jar Binks. Is Agent Smith, ‘the waster to destroy' from the book of Isaiah? Are Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his nephew Feyd-Rautha in Frank Herbert's Dune, analogous to Satan and his antichrist? And which superhero spends his early years hiding his powers, then goes to his Fortress of Solitude before beginning his crime fighting life around the age of 30, just like Jesus?
