No system lives in a silo. I've spent time on previous episodes mentioning different ways we can talk with other systems with SOLIDWORKS PDM. This week, I wanted to take a shallow dive into how we would do this using other tools. I talk about DriveWorks and the different integration and Powerpacks that are available. After that, stick around to hear how the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform uses iPaas to send data to and pull data from the platform. This data can live virtually anywhere, which is part of what makes iPaas so cool!Follow and get in touch with me on Twitter: @NSweeney_InFlow
Show #713 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MODEL Y BEING STOCKPILED AT FREMONT "Tesla has begun preparations for the first set of Model Y deliveries that are scheduled to take place as early as March 15. Car carriers loaded with Tesla’s all-electric crossover were spotted over the weekend alongside a stockpile of Model Y at the company’s factory lot in Fremont, California." reports Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla enthusiast Wilson Lam shared photos of a fleet of Model Y being loaded onto car carriers over the weekend, a signal that the electric carmaker is in the final stages of delivery preparation. While it’s unclear it the Model Y vehicles spotted in car haulers are display vehicles for showrooms or customer cars, the fleet of Tesla crossovers in Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat joins dozens of other Model Y sightings taking place in California." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-fremont-lot-car-carrier-hauler/ FIRST IMAGES OF THE TESLA MODEL Y INTERIOR IN THE WILD mrleetesla on Twitter -two USB-C in the rear on the rear vent cover.. 12v outlet in the trunk. TESLA CHINA STARTS SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 2 TO BUILD MODEL Y "Tesla China has started construction on Phase 2 of Gigafactory 3 Shanghai. This will likely support Tesla Model Y production. This work started immediately after Phase 1.5 which was for the Battery and Powertrain workshop. In a video, Jason Yang calls it Phase 3." according to NextBigFuture.com. https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/tesla-china-starts-shanghai-gigafactory-3-phase-2-to-build-model-y.html BYD TO DELIVER 134 ELECTRIC BUSES TO LOS ANGELES LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) placed the largest order for electric buses in U.S. history — 134 of them will come from BYD. The record-breaking order helps advance the core goals of Mayor Garcetti’s recently signed Executive Directive — “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. STREETSCOOTER: DEUTSCHE POST TO CEASE ELECTRIC VAN PRODUCTION "Deutsche Post/DHL announces they will cease the manufacturing of their StreetScooter electric vans before the end of this year. The Group’s CEO Frank Appel has given up on finding a buyer for its subsidiary, even though it looked as if a deal with China’s Chery was as good as made." writes electrive: "StreetScooter wants to concentrate on the operation of the current fleet alone, which comprises 11,000 electric vans and is to be expanded to 15,000. Less than six months ago, StreetScooter and Chinese EV manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent for a joint venture during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to China. Back then, in September, Chery and StreetScooter announced that they wanted to set up a joint venture in China. https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/29/deutsche-post-to-cease-streetscooter-production/ IS THIS THE MERCEDES EQE? "This could be our first look at the E-Class' electric brother. Mercedes-Benz’s electrification push will continue with three new hybrids planned for a release later this year together with the fully-electric EQA crossover. A product presentation from December 2019 hinted we could also see the EV flagship of the brand - the EQS sedan, before the year’s end but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out there might be yet another electric sedan in the works and this video could be our first look at it." says Yahoo! today: "The clip shows two Mercedes prototypes and one of them is obviously the EQS. The other one, however, features a modified and shortened body, which hints we could be looking at the upcoming EQE EV. Think of it as the electric version of today’s E-Class, similar to what the EQS will be for the S-Class." https://sports.yahoo.com/mercedes-eqe-082012634.html CHARGEPOINT CEO EXPLAINS WHY HE ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y "When it came time for Pasquale Romano, the CEO of the electric-vehicle charging company ChargePoint, to choose his next EV, it was a close call between Tesla's Model Y SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV." writes Business Insider: "Ultimately, the Model Y won out due to its release date and Romano's experience with Tesla's Model S sedan, Romano told Business Insider. On paper, the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E are similar in many areas, though the Model Y has an edge in range, starting price, seating capacity, and cargo space. It remains to be seen which of the two electric-vehicles shoppers will prefer, though there have been signs from Tesla and Ford suggesting each could ending up ranking among the best-selling EVs. " https://www.businessinsider.com/chargepoint-ceo-chose-tesla-model-y-ford-mustang-mach-e-2020-2?r=US&IR=T QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS MARTIN YOUNG My next door neighbor is a Porsche Certified Instructor who teaches new owners how to handle their cars at Porsche Track Experiences here in the Southeast. After some minor cajoling, he finally agreed to take my Chevy Volt out for a spin. We had only been in the car for about 3 minutes when he began to smile and shake his head at how good the performance was. As we drove up a steep and curvy mountain road, he was having so much fun he actually laughed out loud! When we were climbing up a particularly steep section, he exclaimed, "It's actually accelerating going up this!" As we came back down, he marveled at the regenerative braking. Later, after we pulled back into my driveway, he put it in park and turned to me...he smiled and stuck out his hand. As I shook it, he said, "Thank you. I had no idea." So to my fellow EV owners, I say this: You do not have to convince your friends and family that EVs are great. All that you have to do is convince them to drive your car. Once they are behind the wheel, the car will show them how great EVs really are! LEANNE ROBERTS I think the only way to convince them is to get them in one, first as a passenger and then get them to drive one. The way we got into EVs was through driving my brothers Nissan Leaf. There are other options out there such as the EV Experience Days through Octopus which I think is a great idea to test drive one and get rid of any FUD. I do think that drivers days and dealership deals for weekend test drives would only help increase the uptake. Robert Pryor • 3 days ago I'm about ready to tell people not to buy an EV, if the reverse psychology doesn't work, at least I won't have to hear lame reasons why it's not for them. Stephen Troyer • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV. Step one, buy one for yourself. Step two, offer to give rides or let people test drive. (Just don't badger people about it.) Step three, live with the EV and answer any questions about what it's like, how it's holding up, what maintenance and charging is like I remember a news item from this show saying that the #1 influence on people buying EVs is their friends buying EVs. D R-K • 5 days ago If you can bear to let someone else get behind the wheel... let them borrow your car for four days, say Thursday to Sunday... make sure you have a tracker because getting it back will not be easy. Living with an EV, not just a quick test drive will do all the work . Peter Zerfass • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV? Give them the key(card). Let them drive 30 seconds. Done. GENEVA CAR SHOW CANCELED "Two of Switzerland’s largest trade fairs fell victim to the coronavirus epidemic, with organizers of the Geneva International Motor Show and the Baselworld watch fair pulling the plug on this year’s salons as the outbreak spreads in Europe." writes Bloomberg: "The car show, which was due to start Monday, was canceled as a force majeure after the Swiss government barred large gatherings, the organizers said in a statement Friday. German manufacturers Daimler AG and Audi AG said they supported the decision to cancel the show." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-28/geneva-car-show-canceled-in-swiss-bid-to-contain-virus-outbreak?sref=W369vOBR EUROPE’S CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES LIVE ONLINE Despite the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show, the organizers have decided to broadcast the Car of the Year award ceremony via live streaming on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Seven candidates are part of the list of nominees for the Car of the Year 2020 including Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3. Jury members will have to award 25 points, spread over at least five of the seven models. This will take place on Monday, 2 March 2020 at Palexpo. It will be broadcasted live on the Geneva International Motor Show website and on the #GimsSwiss Facebook page. This will enable you to discover the winner in real time. For the US audience, 3pm in Geneva is 9am in New York VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR'S SOFTWARE BUGS THREATEN SUMMER LAUNCH "Volkswagen is still struggling with "massive" software problems with its ID3 compact electric car, according to a German business magazine. The software glitches may force to abandon the EV's planned sales launch in summer, Manager Magazin reported." reports Automotive News Europe: "The problems stem from the basic architecture of the ID3's software, which was developed "too hastily," the magazine said, citing VW's own experts. Many of the system's elements do not understand each other, leading to dropouts and other difficulties, the report said. Hundreds of test drivers of the car are reporting up to 300 errors a day, the magazine said. More than 10,000 technicians are trying to solve the problems, which could delay the ID3's launch by up to a year, the report said. A VW spokesman told Automotive News Europe that the timeline for the ID3 has not changed and the car will be launched this summer." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-id3-software-problems-threaten-summer-launch-report-says CHINA'S CATL AIMS TO RAISE $2.85 BILLION FOR EV BATTERY PROJECTS "CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital." writes Autoblog: "The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday. The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW. In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/28/catl-electric-car-battery-maker-funding/ GILLETTE STADIUM SCORES A TOUCHDOWN WITH 50 NEW ENEL X EV CHARGERS "Gillette Stadium is diving into the wonderful world of EV charging with the installation of 50 new JuiceBox Pro 32 amp units mounted on 25 JuicePedestals." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "The new stations will provide EV charging services to patrons of the stadium as they arrive to watch the New England Patriots or the New England Revolution." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/gillette-stadium-scores-a-touchdown-with-50-new-enel-x-ev-chargers/ TESLA’S MASSIVE 1GWH MEGAPACK BATTERY PROJECT WITH PG&E IS APPROVED "Tesla’s massive project to deploy 1GWh of Megapacks to create a giant energy storage system in California with PG&E has received approval from the local authorities." says Electrek: "It involves four separate energy storage projects and two of them should become the world’s largest battery systems. the Tesla project will be a 182.5MW / 730MWh, which could eventually go up to 1.1GWh. Tesla is listing the project as having a total capacity of 1,200MWh, which would mean that each Megapack has a capacity of 2,673kWh. The total capacity of those 449 Megapacks represents more energy capacity than Tesla Energy deployed throughout its first 3 years of operation – all Powerpacks and Powerwalls combined." In the comments: "This will replace 3 existing gas plants and can be built in less than a year. This is the very definition of efficiency and efficiency eventually always wins." Notice that the 1,200 MW-hr energy rating is 4x the 300 MW power rating; that is, the packs can supply the peak power rating for about 4 hours. That's a big portion of the evening power peak when most people get home from work and turn on lots of appliances and home heating/cooling. Peak power can be 10x the cost of regular power and is usually supplied by natural gas fired steam turbines. This is a smart move by PG&E to reduce the total cost of electricity to their customers. While it's only a first step given the magnitude of the power consumption on the grid, it is an indicator of where technology is taking us in grid modernization. https://electrek.co/2020/02/27/tesla-1gwh-megapack-battery-project-pge-approved/ A SNAPSHOT OF EU NEW PASSENGER CAR MARKETS IN JANUARY Starting this year, manufacturers in the European Union (EU) must comply with the next phase of mandatory CO2 standards for new vehicle fleets. An average fleet-wide target of 95 grams per kilometer (g/km) applies to 95% of the new passenger cars in 2020, and will apply to the whole new car fleet from 2021." says the ICCT.org: "In France, for example, the average CO2 level of new cars dropped from 113 g/km in December to 96 g/km in January—a 15% improvement within only a month's time. In 2020, every low-emission vehicle registered counts twice towards manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions. Norway has implemented a strong vehicle tax based on CO2 and NOx emissions and vehicle weight. In Germany, electric vehicles gained in popularity, increasing from a level of 4% in December 2019 to 6.5% in January 2020. . It seems as if manufacturers are increasingly revealing their hands, not only showcasing new electric models but also marketing them in large quantities." https://theicct.org/blog/staff/snapshot-eu-new-pv-markets-jan2020 MERCEDES TEASES THREE NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS "Mercedes is gearing up to introduce three new plug-in hybrid models this month starting with an announcement on their corporate Facebook page. According to the video, Mercedes plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the GLA SUV, CLA Sedan, and finally the CLA Shooting Brake. Is the market ready for an electrified line-up of budget-friendly Mercedes products? " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once." https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why. " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once." https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV? Gerry Bristol via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/16/19 The best EV podcast ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ I love this podcast for it’s diverse guests, the up-to-date news and the quote “there is no such thing as a self charging hybrid”. If you have an interest in electric vehicles or just curious, this is the podcast to listen to. Martyn Lee has a velvet smooth voice. Willowsbroom via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/15/19 BYD, TOYOTA ENTER AGREEMENT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES "BYD and Toyota announced this morning that the two industry powerhouses have entered into an agreement that will see them partnering on the development of electric vehicle batteries. The batteries lay the foundation for an electrified future for both companies as the agreement includes provisions to partner on the development of sedans and low-floor SUVs as well." writes Kyle Field for CleanTechnica: "The new set of vehicles will be produced under the Toyota brand specifically for the Chinese market in the early 2020s. Toyota has set a public target of selling a full 50% of its vehicles as electrified vehicles by 2025. The fuzzy use of “electrified” allows the company to count its traditional non-plug-in, fossil-fuel-powered, “self-charging” hybrids in the number. Boiling that down to hard numbers, Toyota is hoping to achieve 15% of its sales from fully electric vehicles on its new e-TNGA platform by 2030." To curb global warming, both BYD and Toyota seek to reduce CO2 emissions by promoting the widespread use of BEVs. To accomplish these goals, both companies believe there is a need to put aside their rivalry and collaborate; therefore, the two companies have agreed to jointly develop BEVs. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/07/19/breaking-toyota-byd-to-jointly-develop-evs-batteries-in-new-deal/ https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/28913709.html TESLA VEHICLES ARE 8X LESS LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN FIRES "Tesla has released its vehicle safety report for the second quarter of 2019. Similar to previous quarters, the report showed that Teslas operating on Autopilot are less likely to meet accidents on the road compared to vehicles operating without the driver-assist system enabled. Tesla’s report this quarter also included statistics on vehicle fires for the first time. " reports Simon at Teslarati: "The electric car maker’s data shows that between 2012-2018, there was approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. Considering that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation record one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled, Tesla’s figures make its electric cars over eight times less likely to be involved fires. Tesla’s data includes incidents resulting from structure fires, arson, and several other factors unrelated to the vehicles themselves." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s3x-are-8x-less-likely-to-catch-fire-q2-2019-safety-report/ CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID AND PLUG-IN RUMORS ALREADY SWIRLING "The Chevrolet Corvette C8's debut is just a few hours old, and speculation is already swirling about the vehicle's future that could include a variety of forms of electrification. When asked by Autocar about whether the mid-engined 'Vette could use an integrated starter-generator for a mild-hybrid system or a dedicated electric motor driving the front axle, a member of the 'Vette team told the publication: "You would not look stupid if you said that."" according to Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Back in 2015, General Motors registered a trademark for Corvette E-Ray, and the company has continued to renew that application into 2019. Rumors suggest the automaker might be reserving the moniker for the hybrid 'Vette." https://www.motor1.com/news/360780/chevrolet-corvette-c8-hybrid-rumor/ KRÜGER SUCCESSION: OLIVER ZIPSE NEW BMW CEO "Oliver Zipse will take the lead at BMW on 16 August, the board just decided as much. With Harald Krüger leaving, the German carmaker will have much to do to catch up on electric mobility, fast." says electrive.com: "When Krüger took over as Chairman of the Board of Management in 2015, the Group already had an innovative electric car on offer in the form of the i3. The local competition did not have anything that touched it for a long time. 2015 was a turning point for the BMWi electric division: Herbert Diess, then Board Member for Development, had made a decisive contribution to electric mobility at BMW – even during his time as Board Member for Purchasing, he had strengthened BMWi in-house. After his defeat in the duel for his successor at the top of the board, Diess moved to Volkswagen, and the upcoming electric offensive there now bears his signature." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/18/kruger-succession-oliver-zipse-to-be-new-bmw-boss/ VIVA LAS VEGAS: TESLA LAUNCHES FIRST V3 SUPERCHARGERS IN SIN CITY "Not long ago, Tesla unveiled its new V3 Supercharger technology that's capable of delivering 250 kW of power. This means you can add up to 180 miles of range to a Model 3 Long Range in just 15 minutes. Since then, the automaker has added some V3 Superchargers to existing stations. However, its first brand-new V3 Supercharger station officially went live just yesterday." says InsideEVs: "The Las Vegas Tesla charging station has a total of 39 chargers. In addition to the V3 Superchargers, the site has 15 Level 2 Tesla Wall Connectors for those who aim to leave their car charging for a longer period of time. Tesla says the new site generates power through the use of solar canopies — which also provide shade for Tesla owners — and the energy is stored in Powerpacks that are located on-site." https://insideevs.com/news/360792/video-tesla-v3-supercharger-las-vegas/ GM FAILS TO IMPRESS WITH OFFICIAL 2020 CHEVY BOLT EV UPDATES AND CHANGES "In keeping with the updates to the 2018 and 2019 model years, the 2020 Chevy Bolt EV receives only a couple of color changes and some minor feature adjustments. If the consumer-facing updates match only those listed on the fleet order guide, buying a Bolt EV in 2020 will look much the same as it does right now." reports TorqueNews: "While it doesn’t come as a surprise that GM has sticking with the same battery pack at this early stage in its EV development, it’s disappointing that there don’t seem to be any software tweaks to enable longer fast charging at the maximum rate of 55kW. Greater control over thermal management and battery conditioning would also be interesting additions for current Bolt EV drivers, some of whom will be ending three-year leases next year and looking for reasons to stick with the vehicle." https://www.torquenews.com/7893/gm-fails-impress-official-2020-chevy-bolt-ev-updates HYUNDAI MOTOR PUSHING TO PRODUCE KONA ELECTRIC IN CZECH FACTORY "Hyundai Motor is considering producing 46,000 units of the Kona Electric at its Czech plant next year, industry sources said on July 17. This volume is almost equal to the 48,000 units to be produced at the company’s Ulsan plant this year." says the Korean news site BusinessKorea: "Currently, the Korean carmaker produces all of its eco-friendly cars for exports at the Ulsan and Asan factories in Korea, except those produced in China. Accordingly, if mass production of the Kona Electric begins at the Czech plant next year, it will be Hyundai Motor’s first electric car and green car produced overseas." http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=34026 WORLD'S LONGEST ELECTRIC ROAD TRIP ENDS IN NEW ZEALAND "A Dutch sustainability advocate completed the longest ever journey in an electric vehicle in New Zealand on Friday after a three-year drive that took him through more than 30 countries." reports Reuters: "Wiebe Wakker [vee-ba wakka] set off from the Netherlands in March 2016 in his “Blue Bandit” to showcase the potential of sustainable transport, funded by donations from those following his trip on social media. The 101,000-km (62,800 mile) trip took Wakker through Eastern Europe, Iran, India, Southeast Asia, before traveling around much of Australia and across to New Zealand. Wakker gave regular updates on his blog and social media throughout the journey, detailing visiting Iran’s biggest car manufacturer in Tehran, a breakdown on the Indonesian island of Java and visits to Australia’s outback and world-famous Uluru. The drive had relied on the support of strangers across the globe who offered the traveler food, a place to stay and the essential means to charge his car along the way." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-environment-newzealand-electric/worlds-longest-electric-road-trip-ends-in-new-zealand-idUKKCN1UE0XP COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
Tuesday 15th May 2018. MERCEDES' EQ WILL DEFINE AN ELECTRIC ECOSYSTEM As you may have seen on the recent Fully Charged show, the Mercedes EQ C is in the final stages of testing, in fact the body is so complete it's driving around in camouflage panels. So they're behind Jaguar but ahead of sister company Audi with the e-tron Quattro and BMW with the iX3. And it seems the EQ brand is central to their plans for electric cars. I did notice, as a keen F1 fan as well as Formula E, sometime ago now Mercedes added "EQ Power" to the side of their cars. "Putting the Mercedes line-up of full- electric vehicles under the EQ umbrella is meant to shine a light on the automaker's technical competence, says Britta Seeger, Mercedes-Benz global sales and marketing boss" according to Automotive News. But perhaps more importantly than clear branding they also REALLY want you to test drive one. And that means having one. Which sounds obvious but when you turn up a dealership, for any maker, and ask to test drive an electric car...you get mixed results. "Mercedes is working with dealers globally to set up test-drive events. So far, the events are with plug-in hybrid models and sibling brand Smart's electric vehicle. Dealers in Europe have been asked to keep one or two hybrid models on hand for test-drive experiences, Seeger said." I can imagine sections of the showroom different colours or styles for the EQ cars. However that might not be the best option. I wonder sometimes if they're making life harder by putting their cars in silos, especially those which are based on platforms which will also see combustion variants like the BMW and Mercedes. So rather than going into a showroom and there being a special area, EVs will almost need to be less special. Here are all our models, oh and these are electric. Comparing apples with apples if you like. On the flip side, you could argue that Tesla has done such a good job at stealing those big spenders, you could argue you should have electric specialists surrounded by only EVs. Automotive News continue: “Tesla sold an estimated 28,800 top-of-the-line Model S sedans in 2017, more than triple the number of BMW 7-series sedans sold and nearly double the sales of the Mercedes-Benz S class. Both the Mercedes and BMW large cars are down significantly from their U.S. highs.” BAIC GROUP SELECTS MAGNA TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE And whilst US and European EVs makers are just getting started, their production numbers are dwarfed by some Chinese companies. One of those being BAIC. As they say, they're not mucking around! Many of those companies have long held ambitions to conquer the domestic market, learn their lessons, and then sell their cars to USA and the rest of the world. Whilst that idea was seen as far-fetched by some recent research has show that, in terms of electric cars, 'Made In China' is not a problem. And so the news came through yesterday that one of those big Chinese manufacturers, BAIC, is moving into Europe. BAIC's EC series was the World's #1 selling EV car in 2017 - and only available in China. The Austrian Magna, those who make fully built cars for companies who need extra capacity for instance, have signed a deal with BAIC. And yes, Magna are the ones making the Jaguar I-PACE. The luxury I-PACE. “BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.) and Magna today announced that they will jointly develop a next-generation smart electric vehicle architecture for the Chinese market. China is currently the leading market for electric mobility in the world, with around 700,000 electrified cars sold in 2017. By 2020, the number of all-electric cars on China’s roads is forecast to reach around five million, due in part to subsidies and quotas by the Chinese government. Magna was selected to be BAIC’s partner due to its innovative and cost-effective solutions throughout its complete vehicle manufacturing and engineering services as well as its full-scale electronic/electrical architecture and lightweight technologies" ELECTRIC VEHICLES MAKE DRIVERS CALMER, HAPPIER AND MORE FOCUSED A new study undertaken by LEVC (London EV Company) has shown that the quieter driving environment of an electrically-driven vehicle can have significant mental health benefits. The work, in conjunction with academics from the University of York, has been released during Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May) which is focused on stress and stress reduction, and shows that moving from driving diesel to electric vehicles improves mental well-being for commercial vehicle drivers. In a world first, LEVC (London EV Company) commissioned an experiment to monitor mental activity - among a host of other physical factors - of drivers in both the new electrically-driven taxi and previous diesel model to find out if the quiet cabin of the state-of-the-art electric vehicle had an effect on the wellbeing of hard-working taxi drivers. The test was designed and executed by acoustics expert Dr Duncan Williams of the University of York and took place in central London with four professional cabbies taking to the wheel of both vehicles and undertaking a series of trial drives. An electroencephalogram, often referred to as a 'brain cap', was placed on the head of each driver. Electrodes within the cap monitored brain activity over a set route through the capital, giving previously unseen insight into the differing mental states between drivers of electric and diesel vehicles. Heart rate and audio readings were also taken too. Chris Gubbey, CEO of LEVC said: "Our aim with the TX was to make the world's most advanced taxi, a vehicle that would not only help reduce urban air pollution but improve comfort and convenience for passengers and drivers across the globe. We are delighted to find we have made a vehicle that is now proven to also make cabbies' working lives better. "Given that cabbies spend up to 12hrs a day driving, the vehicle is their office. We owe them a duty of care to provide the best working environment - and this study shows that driving our electric cab has a clear benefit for mental wellbeing. Next year we will be introducing a new electric light commercial vehicle, which means that the positive health implications of going electric will be extended to professional van drivers too." Unlike the previous taxi, the electric taxi’s multi-filter system works to remove gases and particles from the incoming air. In addition, an in-built air quality sensor also automatically closes the external air intake if it detects increased levels of pollution in the outside air - protecting passengers, and the driver, from the capital's often poor-quality air. TESLA REGISTERS SHANGHAI ELECTRIC CAR FIRM AHEAD There's a new name in Electric Cars. It's, ahem, Tesla! Tesla has registered a new electric car firm in Shanghai, as China prepares to scrap rules on capping foreign ownership of new-energy vehicle (NEV) ventures" report Reuters. "The new company will focus on electric cars, spare parts and batteries, according to the filing. The new company, Tesla (Shanghai) Co Ltd, was registered on May 10, according to a filing with the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System seen by Reuters. Tesla Motors HK Limited as the sole shareholder in the firm." Elon Musk recently said he'll be naming the chosen location for the first Chinese factory which means they won't have to face import duty on cars made in the US and sold in China, plus that the Chinese Gigafactory will have all functions under one roof. TESLA UNVEILS NEW LARGE POWERPACK PROJECT FOR GRID BALANCING IN EUROPE Tesla are on a roll recently releasing new videos, yesterday we say the official Tesla twitter account release details of another installation of Powerpacks, this time in Belgium and designed to balance the grid. In case anyone has forgotten the Gigafactory isn't just flat out making battery packs for all three Tesla models, but also the expanding part of the Tesla Energy business. 140 Powerpacks in total have been shipped across the Atlantic to make a total of 18.2MW of power output. There will be one coming to the UK soon as well, and they replace gas generators which has previously been used to keep the grid balanced. HERE'S THE MEMO ELON MUSK JUST SENT ANNOUNCING A MAJOR SHAKE-UP AT TESLA "Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees Monday that the company plans to "flatten" its structure as it works to improve communication and trim activities "that are not vital" to its success" says CNBC. "To ensure that Tesla is well prepared for the future, we have been undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company. As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission. To be clear, we will continue to hire rapidly in critical hourly and salaried positions to support the Model 3 production ramp and future product development." MAYOR SETS 2020 TIMETABLE FOR LONDON ‘ZERO EMISSION ZONES’ The Mayor of London has brought forward his aim to establish a series of ‘Zero Emission Zones’ in parts of the capital by five years, in the final draft of the London Environment Strategy published last week" says Air Quality News. "City Hall will seek to implement zero emission zones in town centres from 2020 and aim to deliver a zero emission zone in central London from 2025." Friday 23rd February 2018. On the podcast today… we’ll talk about the island Renault are taking over for an experiment with electricity, and how Williams F1 team could be making the next EV you buy. HARLEY ELECTRIFIES Well as Steppenwolf wrote in 1969, get your motor running, head out on the highway. If you ride a Harley Davidson, maybe you were born to be wild. But from next year you might be heading out on electrons instead. The first e-motorcycle from Harley is coming in 2019. They’re spending between $25-50 million dollars on e-bike development but, on their recent earning call, weren’t ready to share more details. All we’ve seen is their LiveWire concept but the specs weren’t spectacular a couple of years ago – 50mile range and 93mph top speed. For any Harley Davidson rider that is simply not good enough. Big jumps in EV technology happened in the car world but there are surprisingly few really large bike makers moving forward with e-bikes. New registrations of motorbikes in the US have been flat since 2008, the age of owners has also been getting older, so maybe a move to electrification with top performance, it might inspire a new generation or riders. https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/22/harley-davidsons-ev-debut-could-electrify-the-motorcycle-industry/ ISLAND LIFE IS GOOD FOR RENAULT’S POWER PROJECT Next, how do you fancy a trip to a sunshine island which Renault is using as a proving ground for renewables and EVs? Porto Santo is where Renault have been allowed to install the perfect trifecta of climate friendly energy and transport – renewables, feeding into used EV batteries, which feed into your electric car. Now this isn’t exactly desert island territory, there are over 5,000 residents but they find themselves in the same situation as the small islands in American Samoa, which you might have read about in 2016…when Tesla completed their purchase of SolarCity they wired up the island with Powerpacks to help reduce the diesel shipments they were reliant on for generators, and to keep the lights on. Porto Santo will get 14 Zoes and 6 Kangoo vans, they’ll get 40 charge points, they’ll get V2G and even second-life battery packs for cloudy or non-windy days. Porto Santo will be a proving ground because if it works for 5,000 residents the technology could be scaled up. http://www.thedrive.com/tech/18666/renaults-smart-island-is-powered-by-renewable-energy-and-used-electric-car-batteries FORMULA 1 TEAM COULD MAKE YOUR NEXT ELECTRIC CAR 'Tis the season to unveil Formula 1 cars, with their V6 hybrid engines. But one of the racers, Williams, is unveiling a lot more. Williams Advanced Engineering has a new lightweight EV platform, which is basically a skateboard design of batteries with 4 wheels, advanced suspension and a crash structure. It includes innovations in battery design and particularly cooling – which will need to be advanced if we want to increase charge rate – and in turn bring down rapid charging times. Williams will make the platform available for others to build their own electric vehicles on top of. http://www.insidecomposites.com/exhibitions-conferences/williams-to-unveil-new-approach-to-evs/ IT’S ALIVE! TESLONDA IS THE MASH-UP OF YOUR NIGHTMARES Let me introduce you to another Frankenstein project - The Teslonda. Now we’ve seen these from people like Quest in the UK who made an estate / shooting brake Tesla but cutting the top off, and bonding on some carbon fibre. That was a less in design and engineering, it looked gorgeous and they’ve confirmed there’s more to come. However this new project one, not so much along the same lines. This is a 1980s Honda Accord which has a Tesla drivetrain bolted inside and because of that the rear wheels have to be a lot wider than the original Accord body. It’s fair to say, this isn’t exactly a looker, but boy does it go. It’s made for drag racing, and Jimmy (the man responsible) says 2.5 seconds 0-60 is achievable. And the mash up get worse, or better, depending on your point of view, as it uses a Chevvy volt battery pack to move the salvaged Tesla powertrain. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/teslonda-is-a-tesla-powered-1980s-honda-accord-that-hits-60-mph-in-27-seconds-123737.html VOLVO UNVEILS THE PLUG-IN V60 Well moving onto Volvo, and according to autonews.com, are accelerating their shift to EVs with a choice of new Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. The new Volvo V60 will be on the market soon, and of course Volvo were one of the first to promise a form of electrification will be on every new model starting in 2019. This new V60 comes with a choice of two engines. There’s a T6 engine giving you 336hp alongside the electric motor, and the T8 Twin Engine PHEV, for 386hp with electric motor. U.S. customers will only get the larger engine but both models will be all wheel drive. The European choices will include petrol engines but also Diesel engines as well. That’s a curious decision in the week Porsche said they would no longer be selling diesels because their customers don’t want them. In January 2018 for example, in the UK, the market share of diesel PHEVs was tiny. The V60 will be up against the likes of the Audi A4, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 series. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180221/COPY01/302219937/volvo-speeds-up-electrification-with-new-v60-wagon WHEN IT COMES TO BATTERIES IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY Next we’re talking about battery prices and according to Bloomberg.com £100/kWh is the magic figure to get down to, which they’re predicting will be reached in 2025, that’s from £200/kWh at present. They say large cars and SUVs will be the first segments to reach price parity with internal combustion engines, whilst smaller city cars will require a price of $80/kWh to be price comparative. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-21/the-battery-holds-the-key AFRICAN ADVENTURE FOR POLISH EXPLORERS IN A NISSAN LEAF And finally what’s the farthest you’ve driven an EV, and if you don’t have one but are thinking of it, what’s the farthest you’d go? Well how about two explorers from Poland doing the first ever electric expedition across Africa. Their journey just began using a first-gen Nissan LEAF. They say: Traveling across Africa is probably the hardest test for any vehicle, not only an EV," said Fiedler. "Poor roads, limited charging infrastructure and dramatically diverse weather conditions – from equatorial storms to the scorching heat of the Sahara – these are just a few challenges that we'll have to face during the expedition. They say they’ve travelled over 4,000kms in Poland in the LEAF as a test. The journey started in Cape Town last week and we’ll track their journey, as they travel across South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania and Morocco. None of those places exactly have fast chargers every 100 miles! Good luck to them, we’ll follow their journey, and update you on the podcast. http://www.autocarpro.in/news-international/ev-expedition-africa-begins-28167 Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
