Richard Evans, author of the acclaimed The Third Reich Trilogy and over two dozen other volumes on modern Europe, is our preeminent scholar of Nazi Germany. Having spent half a century searching for the truths behind one of the most horrifying episodes in human history, in Hitler's People: The Faces of the Third Reich (Penguin Press, 2024), he brings us back to the original site of the Nazi movement: namely, the lives of its most important members. Working in concentric circles out from Hitler and his closest allies, Evans forms a typological framework of Germany society under Nazi rule from the top down. With a novelist's eye for detail, Evans explains the Third Reich through the personal failings and professional ambitions of its members, from its most notorious deputies--like Goebbels, the regime's propagandist, and Himmler, the Holocaust's chief architect--to the crucial enforcers and instruments of the Nazi agenda that history has largely forgotten--like the schoolteacher Julius Streicher and the actress Leni Riefenstahl. Drawing on a wealth of recently unearthed historical sources, Hitler's People lays bare the inner and outer lives of the characters whose choices led to the deaths of millions. Nearly a century after Hitler's rise, the leading nations of the West are once again being torn apart by a will to power. By telling the stories of these infamous lives as human lives, Evans asks us to grapple with the complicated nature of complicity, showing us that the distinctions between individual and collective responsibility--and even between pathological evil and rational choice--are never easily drawn. With democracy in global decline amid the rise of autocrats and ongoing armed conflict, many politicians and pundits invoke the emergency of fascism a century ago in an attempt to make sense of our current dilemmas. Such comparisons are fraught with problems, not least the unique nature of Nazism's ambitions for global conquest and genocide. In this episode, historian Richard J. Evans discusses the new urgency surrounding what “made and sustained” the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler's dictatorship as they relate to today's threats to democratic institutions. Mr. Evans is the author of “Hitler's People,” which aims to explain what motivated the Nazi leaders and bureaucrats to carry out their crimes. The book was reviewed in The Washington Times on Aug. 1.

Episode 2159: Richard J. Evans on how leading Nazis were, in some ways, just ordinary middle class Germans

As author of the authoritative three volume Third Reich Trilogy, Richard J. Evans is probably the most respected scholar of Hitler's Third Reich in the world today. And his latest book, Hitler's People, is an attempt to make all-too-human sense of Nazi lieutenants like Goebbels, Himmler, Eichmann and Streicher. It goes without saying of course, that these men were all monsters. But Evans is also interested in the human qualities of these Nazis. What he discovers, he told me, are ordinary middle class German faces lurking behind the masks of mass murderers. Any of us could have been on of Hitler's people, he seems to be warning us. And in a contemporary age in which the murderous Nazi cult of racism and violence is creeping back into mainstream politics, Evans observations about the ordinariness of evil are particularly jarring. Richard J. Evans is one of the world's leading historians of modern Germany. He has served as Regius Professor of History at the University of Cambridge; president of Wolfson College, Cambridge; and provost of Gresham College in the City of London. He has received the Hamburg Medal for Art and Science for cultural services to the city, and the British Academy's Leverhulme Medal and Prize, awarded for a significant contribution to the humanities or social sciences. In 2000, he was the principal expert witness in the David Irving Holocaust denial libel trial at the High Court in London, subsequently the subject of the film Denial. His books include Death in Hamburg (winner of the Wolfson History Prize), In Defence of History, The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power, The Third Reich at War, and The Pursuit of Power: Europe 1815–1914, volume 7 of the Penguin History of Europe. His most recent books are Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History and The Hitler Conspiracies: The Third Reich and the Paranoid Imagination. In 2012, he was knighted for services to scholarship.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. “Masterful. . . . Evans demonstrates a fluent style and a sweeping grasp of the Third Reich's history and of the enormous historical literature. . . . Evans's fellow historians as well as a broader public will read this work, not quite with pleasure, for there is little joy in this story, but with admiration for the author's narrative powers.” ―Publisher's Weekly (starred review) A New York Times bestseller! An absorbing, revelatory, and definitive account of one of the greatest tragedies in human history Adroitly blending narrative, description, and analysis, Richard J. Evans portrays a society rushing headlong to self-destruction and taking much of Europe with it. Interweaving a broad narrative of the war's progress from a wide range of people, Evans reveals the dynamics of a society plunged into war at every level. The great battles and events of the conflict are here, but just as telling is Evans's re- creation of the daily experience of ordinary Germans in wartime. At the center of the book is the Nazi extermination of the Jews. The final book in Richard J. Evan's three-volume history of Hitler's Germany, hailed "a masterpiece" by The New York Times, The Third Reich at War lays bare the most momentous and tragic years of the Nazi regime.

The second book in his acclaimed trilogy on the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, Richard J. Evans' The Third Reich in Power: How the Nazis Won Over the Hearts and Minds of a Nation explores how Hitler turned Germany from a vibrant democracy into a one-party state. Before Hitler seized power in 1933, Germany had been famous for its sophistication and complexity. So how was it possible for a group of ideological obsessives to re-mould it into a one-party state directed at war and race hate? How did the Nazis win over the hearts and minds of Germany's citizens, twist science, religion and culture, and transform the country's politics to achieve total dominance so quickly? From the Nuremberg Laws to the Olympic Games, Kristallnacht to the Hitler Youth, this gripping account shows how a whole population became enmeshed in a dictatorship that was consumed by hatred and driven by war. 'Impressive ... perceptive ... humane' Ian Kershaw 'Excellent ... powerful ... it makes an indelible impression' Robert Service, Sunday Times 'Likely to be the standard work for some years to come' Spectator Books of the Year 'A rich and detailed description of just what the Third Reich did in every compartment of the state and every corner of society ... It's striking how few political leaders across the Western world can claim to have handled the coronavirus pandemic especially well. Throughout large parts of Europe and the Americas, politicians have been caught on the hop, reacting slowly and clumsily to the unfolding disaster. In their defense, these leaders have typically blamed what they insist is the unprecedented nature of the Covid catastrophe.But a glance through the history books shows just how little of this crisis is truly new. As Edith Hall, professor of classics at King's College London, tells the podcast, as long ago as 430BC Boris Johnson's great hero Pericles was himself laid low by a deadly epidemic — the disastrous Plague of Athens. This all-powerful leader of ancient Greece was wildly popular with the public and appeared untouchable, she says, until a new and deadly disease arrived at his shores. Johnson, a classics scholar in his youth, must know the tale all too well. He does not appear to have heeded its lessons.In addition to the sparkling Professor Hall, I was delighted to interview Sir Richard Evans, professor emeritus of history at the University of Cambridge, for this episode. In his role as provost of Gresham College, Professor Evans gave a wonderful series of lectures back in 2012 on the history of pandemics, which I listened to during lockdown last year. He tells the podcast how politicians began to fight back against pandemics during the Middle Ages with exactly the sorts of lockdowns and quarantines we've seen this past year — but were frequently undermined by their inability to enforce restrictions, and by an all-too-familiar slowness to react.My final guest is a genuine pandemic superstar. John M. Barry is the author of 'The Great Influenza', the seminal book on America's response to the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak which helped inspire Bill Gates to devote so much time and resource towards pandemic research. Speaking from his home in New Orleans, Barry gives a gripping account of this shockingly brutal disease — and of the political leaders in parts of the U.S. who failed their people by putting profit before public health.If you enjoyed this pilot episode, do please subscribe to Westminster Insider via your usual channel — and leave us a rating and a review if you can.Bibliography / Further reading:These books, articles and lectures were all invaluable resources as I researched this episode of the podcast.The Great Plagues: Epidemics in History from the Middle Ages to the Present Day, Richard J. Our global interconnectedness has given new strength to conspiracy theories. And that's never been more clear than during the pandemic, as swathes of people have been able to come together digitally in their joint doubt of the true origin of covid-19, the motives of the world's governments, and even the virus's very existence. But why do people become obsessed with believing surreal fantasies when the truth is right there in front of them? Where do these stories come from, and how are conspiracy theorists created? Today's guest is Professor Sir Richard J. Evans, author of The Hitler Conspiracies. In this episode he explores the many myths surrounding the death of Hitler, which have even outlived the man himself. He also explains what's going on in the minds of conspiracy theorists, why we should take care when writing stories based on real events, and how content creators might be inadvertently helping to perpetuate these myths. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epGuid: 'behindthespine.podbean.com/6bb6c0d3-077d-3d1b-858d-fc4f37f932a5', rssUrl: 'https://feed.podbean.com/behindthespine/feed.xml', backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

In the 1930s, German civil servant Friedrich Kellner was outraged by the increasing brutality of the Nazi party and the complicity of his fellow citizens. He began to keep a secret diary to record the crimes of the Third Reich and his condemnations of his countrymen. One closed-door meeting changed all of this. This four-episode series will explain how it happened.In this episode, host Dave Noell introduces the series and takes listeners back to the 1920s to explore the roots of the Nazi movement. It was nothing more than a splinter political party in this decade. However, a parliamentary election in September of 1930 put the Nazis at the center of attention in Germany and the world. The legendary and renowned historian of the Third Reich, Professor Sir Richard Evans challenges and debunks many myths and conspiracy theories relating to Hitler and Nazi Germany."The idea that nothing happens by chance in history, that nothing is quite what it seems to be at first sight, that everything is the result of the secret machinations of malign groups of people manipulating everything from behind the scenes - these notions are as old as history itself. But conspiracy theories are becoming more popular and more widespread in the twenty-first century. Nowhere have they become more obvious than in revisionist accounts of the history of the Third Reich. Long-discredited conspiracy theories have taken on a new lease of life, given credence by claims of freshly discovered evidence and novel angles of investigation." ~The Hitler Conspiracies Synopsis.In this episode, Sir Evans leads us into history, historiography and the dangers of conspiracy theories and fictions that are presented as alternative truth. Join us as we attack and forever lay to rest these five conspiracy theories:(1) The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, its origins and its supposed influence on the Nazis.(2) The Stab in the Back, the myth and fictitious propaganda that the German Army was stabbed in the back by Jews and Socialists.(3) That the Nazis burned down the Reichstag in order to seize power.(4) That Rudolph Hess flew to Germany on a mission by Adolf Hitler only for the mission to be suppressed by Winston Churchill.(5) That Hitler didn't commit suicide but instead fled Berlin and made his way to a foreign land.Thoroughly, this great historian and scholar valiantly leads us on a journey through history, misinformation and lies to forever set the record straight in a most knightly and valiant manner, while leaving us with a sobering message and that is the daily attack that history is under from those wish to bend it to their agenda and will. -- Obras indicadas: Em nome da Rosa, Umberto Eco (1986), Sombra de Goya (2007); Anotações sobre a lide e o conteúdo do processo penal, Jacinto Nelson de Miranda Coutinho (1998), A trilogia do Terceiro Reich, Templarios, Richard J. Esther Duflo was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics this autumn for her work in the developing world. In her latest book, Good Economics for Hard Times, the French economist turns her attention to the thorniest issues of our time, from global immigration to climate change. She tells Tom Sutcliffe how the lessons from the world's poorest countries can be applied to Western economies, and why we should be wary of complacency. One of the worst economic crises imaginable struck Weimar Germany in the 1920s. Hyperinflation led to prices in 1923 that were astonishingly a billion times higher than they had been in 1914. But historian Richard J Evans explains that the chaos and suffering caused by sky-high prices did not affect all Germans equally. The middle classes saw their mortgages and rent fall to practically nothing, while many businesses expanded rapidly. Evans explores the fracturing of society that followed this hardest of times. The Booker prize-winning author Julian Barnes looks back at France’s Belle Epoque, an era known for luscious Renoir and Monet paintings, for flamboyant nights at the Moulin Rouge, and for widespread glamour and wealth. In The Man in the Red Coat, Barnes looks beneath the surface of this glittering era, and instead finds rampant prejudice, nativism, hysteria and violence. He depicts an era of enormous social change, with striking parallels to our own time. Producer: Hannah Sander.

What can we do to reduce the speed of climate change?  Bill McKibben argues that we're at a bleak moment in human history -- and we'll either confront that bleakness, or watch the civilization our forebears built slip away.  Bill was one of the first people to warn of the dangers of global warming, 30 years ago with his book The End of Nature.  Then he founded the environmental organization 350.org, the first truly global citizens movement to combat climate change.  It offers some possible ways out of the trap.  His new book is FALTER: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? Also: Eric Hobsbawm was everybody’s favorite Marxist historian.  His books, especially “The Age of Revolution,” “The Age of Capital,” “the Age of Empire,” and “The Age of Extremes,” have been translated into 50 languages and sold millions of copies.  He was also a lifelong member of the British Communist Party, and his fight against Stalinist orthodoxy in the Party shaped his understanding of the past.  Richard J Evans explains – he’s the author of a big new biography of Hobsbawm.

Welcome to the Can't Make This Up History Podcast. I'm your host Kevin. Thank you for joining me during this cold, cold February for episode number 12 of the podcast. My guest today is Dr. Bradley W. Hart. Bradley is an assistant professor at California State University, Fresno where he teaches the history of journalism and Jewish studies. He completed his PhD in history at Cambridge University under the supervision of the historian Richard J. Evans, who some listeners may know from his seminal trilogy on the Third Reich. Bradley has written on global economics and politics in the early 20th century as well as on Nazi Germany. Bradley joins me from California via Skype to talk about his new book "Hitler's American Friends: The Third Reich's Supporters in the United States." Some of the things we cover in today's episode are groups in America that were sympathetic to the rise of nazism and fascism in Europe, the prominence of anti-semitism in mass media, and the role of the isolationist America First Committee in trying to keep the United States from entering World War II. Based on Patrick's recommendation, Infinite Gestation covers Group Portrait with Lady by Heinrich Böll, with a (mostly) civil discussion. The work showcases Böll at the height of his craft (the novel was cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1972) and may even lead one to conclude that Böll is indeed post war Germany's "literary therapist." Many times deemed experimental, the plot consists of the life of Leni Pfeiffer (the woman) written with journalistic flair by a fictional author using interviews with her family, friends and acquaintances to build the narrative alongside his own observations. Despite the setting (Germany, just prior to World War I and on into the 1970's) there is no shortage of humor in the novel, including posters of human anatomy used as apartment decor and a nun who divines the health of school girls by examining their feces. In the end, the novel comes highly recommended. Spoiler warning: Grant reveals the end of The Train Was On Time. This year, Richard J. Evans FBA, Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge and one of the most eminent British experts on German history spoke about "British and Germans: Perceptions and Misperceptions since the Second World War". Professor Evan's fascinating account of the way Germany and the Germans have been portrayed in Britain over the past 65 years was peppered with many examples from political debates and the press. More than 120 guests were reminded of many perceptions - and even more misperceptions - of the Germans, which have sometimes reflected deep-rooted beliefs, and at other times have been the reaction to current political developments in Europe and beyond.
