What if your money could fund the future you actually want to live in? That is the question Alix Lebec has spent her career trying to answer. On Getting Rich Together, host Syama Bunten sits down with Alix, founder of Lebec, a firm built to mainstream innovative finance and put more capital to work on some of the world's biggest problems. Alix grew up between France, South Korea, and China before finishing high school in Dallas, Texas. That global upbringing shaped everything about how she sees money, risk, and opportunity. She built her career inside global development, philanthropy, and asset management before launching Lebec during the height of the pandemic to bridge the gap between traditional finance and meaningful change. The conversation gets into the real mechanics of innovative finance strategies, including how blended finance can turn $1 million in philanthropy into $50 million in private investment capital that would otherwise sit on the sidelines. Alix breaks down why women in impact investing are not choosing between returns and values, and why that false choice has kept too many people out of the room for too long. Lebec operates across three pillars. The first is strategic advisory. The second is a boutique investment manager that builds diversified portfolios of private market funds across sectors like water, oceans, and deforestation. The third is narrative change through commercial film and storytelling, where innovative finance structures put capital directly in the hands of social entrepreneurs. Alix is also raising a $1 million seed round to scale the vision. This episode is for any woman who has ever wondered whether her money can do more. Impact investing for women is no longer a niche conversation. It is becoming one of the most important conversations in finance. When Julie Brown was being poached from one company to another, they asked what she was currently earning. She told them a number she wanted to be true — what she deserved, not what she was making. They didn't blink. That's how she spent 17 years as one of the highest-paid professionals in a male-dominated field before realising that the secret lay in building relationships. She's turned that into a book called This Sh!t Works, and a speaking career with keynote speeches 99.9% of audiences want to hear again. Turns out, the sh!t does work.We talked about why everyone keeps asking the question they hate being asked, how a woman complimenting her flowered pants on the street turned into the perfect lesson on what networking was always supposed to feel like, and what it actually takes to be someone people remember after the room clears.Links to learn more about Julie Brown:WebsiteLinkedInAny thoughts? Even financially independent people have lost fortunes to bad investments, high-fee funds, and speculation. Brad Barrett, Alan Donegan, and Katie Donegan lay bare their most expensive mistakes—from Alan's 90% dot-com crash loss to Katie's near-£1 million fee trap to Brad's decade-long real estate nightmare—proving that catastrophic errors don't prevent you from reaching FI if you learn the right lessons. Key Topics Discussed [00:00:00] Introduction: Why Share Mistakes? Brad introduces the episode concept, explaining why sharing financial and life mistakes can help others avoid similar pitfalls on their FI journey. [00:03:30] Alan's Dot-Com Bubble Disaster Alan shares how he lost 90% of his £7,000 life savings investing in high-tech managed growth stocks right before the dot-com crash, and how this scared him away from stock market investing for 13 years. [00:08:45] Brad's Early Investment Mistakes Brad discusses investing in WorldCom and other 'top picks' that went bankrupt, plus getting sold a mutual fund with horrible loads, highlighting that there's no secret investment knowledge reserved for the wealthy. [00:13:20] Katie's High-Fee Fund Trap Katie reveals how a financial advisor convinced her to invest in actively managed funds with 2.71% ongoing fees plus 3% entry charges, a mistake that would have cost her and Alan £1 million if they hadn't discovered index investing. [00:18:50] Brad's Real Estate Speculation Nightmare Brad shares his biggest mistake: speculating on golf course community properties with interest-only loans right before the 2008 crash, causing over a decade of stress and significant financial loss. [00:28:15] Alan's Career Mistakes: The Book Incident Alan reveals how he wrote a book called 'How Not to Run a Business' about his boss on the company laptop, got fired, and learned about speaking truth to power and the importance of FI for workplace freedom. [00:32:40] Katie's Confidence and Comparison Struggles Katie discusses how her fixed mindset and comparison with others held her back from pursuing opportunities like netball and football, and how building confidence is as important as building net worth. [00:42:30] The Power of Saying No and Setting Boundaries The trio discusses the difficulty of being direct and honest, the importance of saying no, and how people-pleasing can create more problems than it solves. [00:48:20] Business Mistakes: Email Lists and Sales Fear Alan shares his regret about never building an email list for his successful business and letting fear of rejection prevent him from scaling, emphasizing the importance of owning your platform. [00:54:10] Salary Negotiation and Final Thoughts Brad discusses not negotiating his salary when changing jobs, the hosts wrap up with reflections on learning from mistakes, and encourage listeners to share their own mistakes in the community. Notable Quotes Brad Barrett: "You can make mistakes and you can make catastrophic mistakes, and you can pick yourself back up and you can move on with your life. You're stronger and you're wiser." Alan Donegan: "Your success in life is directly related to how many mistakes you can make as quickly as possible and learn from them." Alan Donegan: "Spend as much time building your confidence as you do your net worth, because it is so powerful in everything you do going forwards." Katie Donegan: "To rinse the value out of the mistakes, it's a lot more valuable if we share them. I would love you to get the value out of my mistake because I've already paid the price." Brad Barrett: "There's no secret. There's virtually no genius. Don't get caught up in wild speculative behavior." Key Takeaways Invest in low-cost index funds like VTI instead of actively managed funds or individual stocks to avoid high fees and poor performance Build an email list from day one if you're starting a business—don't rely solely on social media platforms you don't control Always negotiate your salary when changing jobs or getting promoted Wor…
Have you ever felt stuck in a negotiation, like you had no real choice but to accept what was offered? Or wondered why some people seem to command better outcomes without being aggressive or confrontational? What if the difference wasn't confidence alone, but the strength of their backup plan? In this episode, I'm sharing how to build a strong BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement), signal your leverage without sounding threatening, and understand and reality-test the other party's BATNA, and so much more. You'll also learn why simply having a backup plan isn't enough, and how subtle communication can completely shift the power dynamics in your favor. If you're heading into a negotiation where the stakes feel high, whether it's a job offer, a promotion, or a personal decision, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Tune in to learn how to strengthen your position before the conversation even begins, what most people get wrong about leverage, and how to approach negotiations in a way that is calm, strategic, and quietly powerful, for yourself and for the people who may one day follow your lead.MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: ⚉ [Podcast] #31 Part 1 Special: Your Step-By-Step Guide To Negotiating - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/31-part-1-special-your-step-by-step-guide-to-negotiating/id1735117122?i=1000744272604 ⚉ [Podcast] #32 Part 2 Special: Your Step-By-Step Guide To Negotiating - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/32-part-2-special-your-step-by-step-guide-to-negotiating/id1735117122?i=1000746164297 ⚉ [Course] Fundamentals of Negotiation for Women Express - https://course.moonnegotiation.com/fundamentals-of-negotiation-for-women-EXPRESS ⚉ [Podcast] #26 “I Got Two Job Offers Revoked”—Could This Happen to You? - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/26-i-got-two-job-offers-revoked-could-this-happen-to-you/id1735117122?i=1000724516196 JOIN THE PRIORITY LIST FOR JOAN'S NEXT COHORT OF THE ADVANCED NEGOTIATION INTENSIVEhttps://course.moonnegotiation.com/Join-the-Priority-List—This podcast is a call-in show, so if you or a woman you know needs help in this area, feel free to contact me at joan@moonnegotiation.com to submit your questions or join me in our next episode. This week’s Friday Drinks starts off fun… and ends in absolute chaos. Because what do you do when you get headhunted and try to negotiate your salary, only for it to completely backfire? Job offer gone. Pay rise denied. And now you’re stuck wondering if being honest at work just worked against you. We definitely had some opinions. As always, we also unpack a DM from someone in our community who found themselves in exactly that situation, and it opens up a bigger conversation about loyalty, transparency, and knowing your worth. Because in theory, you did everything ‘right’ but the outcome says otherwise. Before we spiral (in a productive way), we also get into a Money Dilemma that feels very relatable if you’ve ever dipped your toe into investing. What happens when you realise you might be doubling up on ETFs? Same underlying investments, different funds, and suddenly you’re questioning everything. We break down what’s actually going on there, what “hedged” really means, and whether this is something you need to fix or just part of the learning curve. There’s also the usual Friday Drinks chaos. Jess shares Money Wins that prove the small things really do add up, Bec’s got Broke Tips that are equal parts clever and questionable, and a conversation about what we’d all do if money genuinely didn’t matter, which tells you more about us than it probably should. If you’ve ever second-guessed a money decision, questioned your job, or wondered if you played something wrong, this one’s going to feel all too familiar. Why mastering unspoken workplace communication is essential to long-term career success.Succeeding at work doesn't just depend on how hard you work or how smart you are. According to Erin McGoff, it often comes down to whether you understand the “secret language” everyone else seems to be speaking.McGoff is a career creator, Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, and author of The Secret Language of Work: Hyper Helpful Scripts for Every Situation. Known for her wildly popular AdviceWithErin platform, she helps millions of professionals phrase things more effectively — without sounding stiff or robotic. “It's this hidden curriculum to the workforce,” she explains, describing the unwritten rules of interviews, negotiations, and professional etiquette. “It's not written down anywhere. It's not equally distributed.” Her mission is to make those invisible rules visible — and usable. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, McGoff and host Matt Abrahams explore how to communicate with confidence, advocate for yourself strategically, and build a professional brand with intention. Confidence, she says, isn't fixed: “Confidence isn't binary. Confidence is a spectrum.” It starts internally, with how we speak to ourselves, and strengthens when we “get really good at what you do.”Episode Reference Links:Erin McGoffErin's Book: The Secret Language of Work202. You walked into that review with receipts. You ran the relationships, trained the people who got promoted over you, covered someone's maternity leave for free, and showed up every single time. And what did you get? A 2.5% raise and a smile. Dr. Renee is here to call that out for exactly what it is, and more importantly, to tell you what to do about it.This episode is part of the NoBS Wealth Black History Month Series, and Dr. Renee does not hold back. She brings the data. She brings the framework. And she brings the kind of real talk that comes from someone who lived it, worked through it, and came out the other side knowing her worth. When a Black worker earns 84 cents to every dollar a white worker makes, that is not an opinion. That is the math. And the math is why this conversation matters.Dr. Renee lays out a three-part framework that will change how you show up at work: Value (if you can't quantify your impact, you can't negotiate), Visibility (stop being the best-kept secret in the building), and Leverage (options change everything, even if you never use them). This is not motivational fluff. This is a real playbook with a real case study, a client who got her title corrected and a 22% raise in 60 days.Stoy also goes there on Gen Z, calling out the flip side of the conversation. Knowing your worth matters. But if you haven't put in the work to back it up, that's a problem too. This episode holds everyone accountable, no matter what generation you fall into. The hard truth Dr. Renee leaves you with: shrinking is not a promotion strategy. If you don't advocate for yourself, someone else will price you. And it will be lower than what you deserve. In this episode, I go over the finer details on how to ask for a raise. These are the exact steps my client used to get a $15K raise this month, even after being in the same job for years. I cover logistics, such as when you should ask for a raise, what data you should have prepared from your day-to-day responsibilities, and what data you should get from other companies that are hiring for similar roles. I also cover the mindset that you need to ask for a raise, and I even share some of the affirmations that I've used when I've asked for raises in the past. Lastly, I explain how you can practice detachment while asking for a raise, and even give an example of how a former client recently asked for another raise and promotion while feeling calm, grounded, and fully detached from the outcome. These are the steps my clients have used to get job offers and over $600,000 in salary increases. Have you ever walked into a negotiation thinking you have to look confident, puffed up your feathers, and had a bit of a “wing it” approach?Or wanted something more, perhaps a salary increase, but didn't really know what to ask for?In Part 2, I'll be talking about the “I,” “R,” and “E” of the ASPIRE framework. You should definitely listen to Part 1 first so you can fully understand the foundation of this approach and see how each step builds on the last. Because ASPIRE is designed to work as a complete, interconnected system, not as isolated tactics. In this episode, I'm sharing how to investigate hidden standards, recalibrate your ask based on real information, and execute with emotional and psychological preparedness, and so much more. I break down why ambiguity disproportionately hurts women in negotiations, how to uncover what's actually negotiable (even when you're told it isn't), and why doing a little investigative legwork can completely change the outcome of a conversation. If you or someone you care about is in the middle of a long, high-stakes negotiation—or putting one off because it feels overwhelming—this episode is essential listening. Have you ever walked into a negotiation feeling unsure where to start, or wondered why doing “all the right things” still didn't get you the outcome you hoped for? What if the problem isn't your confidence or your ask, but the lack of a clear system guiding your decisions? In this episode, I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the ASPIRE ™ framework, the six-step system I created to help clients navigate everything from salary conversations to high-stakes workplace negotiations. I break down why mindset isn't “woo-woo” but a strategic advantage, how misidentifying powerbrokers and decision-makers can derail your efforts, and why focusing on interests - not positions - can unlock better outcomes for everyone involved. I also walk through how to plan your moves thoughtfully, frame your asks as Win-Wins, and avoid common traps that leave people feeling stuck or resentful. If you or someone you care about is preparing for a negotiation - or avoiding one because it feels overwhelming - this episode will give you language, structure, and clarity you can apply immediately.JOIN THE PRIORITY LIST FOR JOAN'S NEXT COHORT OF THE ADVANCED NEGOTIATION INTENSIVEhttps://course.moonnegotiation.com/Join-the-Priority-List—This podcast is a call-in show, so if you or a woman you know needs help in this area, feel free to contact me at joan@moonnegotiation.com to submit your questions or join me in our next episode. Send us a textA Florida beach meltdown, a nationwide cloud outage, and a truly awful Halloween costume walk into a workplace. What sounds like a joke turns into a sharp look at how culture, tech, and judgment collide where people get paid and policies get real. We return from a short break with fresh stories and hard lessons: how a single AWS failure rippled into payroll panic, why “it's just a costume” can become a harassment case, and what classic scenes from The Office still teach us about influence, uncertainty, and keeping teams steady when the headlines aren't.We share candid travel moments that morph into a discussion about public decency and liability, then pivot to an organizational behavior assignment featuring Michael Scott's surprising competence and Jim's cooler strategy. The contrast sets up a bigger point about leadership: sometimes you stabilize by dialing in the work; other times you intentionally break the tension. Knowing which move to make is culture management in action. From there, we unpack real HR mechanics. Outages expose how reliant we are on a handful of cloud rails and how unglamorous continuity planning saves actual paychecks. We talk tokenized mobile payments, vendor dependencies, communication trees, and the simple power of a backup plan. On the talent side, we challenge a common salary myth: it's not that people never negotiate, it's that strong recruiters pre‑close early. We walk through pay ranges, must‑have trade‑offs, and how clearer expectations prevent messy last‑minute asks that sour the relationship before day one. Finally, we lean into the Halloween talk: blackface is never okay, “terrorist” costumes are unacceptable, and sexualized gags at the office invite risk. If you want festive without fallout, set guardrails that are simple, inclusive, and enforced. We keep it snarky, but the aim is practical—help you avoid the next viral moment and build a team that can laugh without crossing lines. If this mix of real talk and useful tactics helps you navigate your own WTF moments, follow the show, share it with a colleague who needs it, and leave a quick review so others can find us. This is your leverage window. Q4 is when companies lock budgets, finalize promotions, set equity, and protect retention risk. Translation: decisions are being made about you—often without you. If you stay quiet, you're already behind. In this episode, Dr. Renee Baker joins me to dismantle the myths and give you a real plan to negotiate raises, titles, and equity without begging or breaking. We tear into the fear narrative—layoffs, headlines, “be grateful and wait your turn.” Gratitude without advocacy is servitude. Silence doesn't pay. You are the CEO of you, and if you don't speak up, you've handed away your leverage. We talk about why it's cheaper to keep you than replace you, how bonuses and timing create retention pressure, and how to use that math in your favor. Then we get tactical. Politics often beats performance, so study the breadcrumbs: who gets promoted, how, and why. Don't bring a task list to a review—bring outcomes. Learn to quantify impact beyond sales, frame results the way your firm rewards them, and ask the right questions in your 1:1s so your leaders carry the right story into the room when you're not there. We close with two heavy hitters: titles and “no.” Titles drive pay bands and access—use them. If they say no, convert it into a timeline, criteria, and checkpoints. If that's not respected, that's your signal. This is not about ego. It's about equity, mobility, and your next seat at the table.Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sN9-MechYpMConnect with Dr. Renee Baker: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsreneebaker/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ItsReneeBaker/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsreneebaker Threads: https://www.threads.net/@itsreneebaker YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrReneeBakerAs always we ask you to comment, DM, whatever it takes to have a conversation to help you take the next step in your journey, reach out on any platform!Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram, Tiktok, LinkedinDISCLOSURE: Awards and rankings by third parties are not indicative of future performance or client investment success. I know it's tempting. A recruiter emails you with your job offer. You want to reply quickly. Clear things up. Maybe even negotiate. But email is the worst place to have that conversation. Why? Have you ever heard of Albert Mehrabian? He developed “The Mehrabian Rule.” Catchy, yes. But more importantly, true. His rule is also known as the 7-38-55 rule. It suggests, that in communication, the impact of any message is divided into pieces. 7% from the words spoken (or, in your inclination, written). 38% from the tone of your voice. 55% from your body language. Now, I realize you might not have my 9 semesters of higher math I needed to endure at THE Iowa State University to get my rarely-used Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, so let me help you with the calculation. That's 93% of your communication power not at your disposal in an email. When it comes to negotiating your salary, tone, timing, and tactics matter. Plus, the real-time going round-and-round and back-and-forth is somewhat necessary. You basically lose all these necessities when you're using a keyboard! So, what should you do instead? Start by listening to my nifty podcast on Never Negotiate Salary Over Email | Do This Instead. Then do what I teach in the podcast. All that'll be left after that is for you to think of me with every automatic deposit of your big paycheck!
