#68 - What Burns Beneath: The Untold Story of Firefighter Life w/Rafael Gordon

From life-or-death decisions to navigating departmental politics, Rafael pulls back the curtain on his 27-year career as a San Francisco firefighter paramedic in this captivating conversation about service, sacrifice, and survival.Rafael's journey began in 1990 as a paramedic with no intention of joining the fire department. When the city merged emergency services in 1997, he found himself thrust into a hostile environment where paramedics were viewed with suspicion and resentment by traditional firefighters. "There were fistfights," Rafael recalls, describing the decade-long tension that followed the controversial merger. The weight of responsibility in emergency services becomes starkly apparent as Rafael shares his experiences delivering death notifications and making split-second medical decisions. One particularly haunting story involves his first time telling a young woman her boyfriend had died from an overdose. "When you tell somebody their family member is dead, they'll never forget that moment," he explains, emphasizing how critical empathy becomes in these devastating circumstances.Perhaps most gripping is Rafael's account of his own brush with death during a gas explosion response. Separated from his crew in pitch darkness as his oxygen supply dwindled, he experienced a surreal moment of calm while wondering, "Is this where it ends?" His matter-of-fact recounting of the incident reveals the psychological resilience required of first responders who routinely face mortality.Beyond the emergencies themselves, Rafael offers candid insights into the politics affecting emergency services, the realities of homelessness and addiction in San Francisco, and the surprising ways social media has transformed public interactions with first responders. Now retired and pursuing a second career in scalp micropigmentation, his story stands as a powerful testament to finding purpose after decades of high-stress service. What will stay with you long after listening is Rafael's remarkable ability to maintain his humanity despite regularly witnessing tragedy. His journey reminds us that behind every emergency response is a person making difficult choices while carrying the emotional weight of a community's most devastating moments. To follow Rafael and his incredible journey: INSTAGRAM- @optimized_smpTIKTOK- @http://tiktok.com/@optimized_4_impact —Support the showFollow Wild Chaos on Social Media: Apple iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-wild-chaos-podcast/id1732761860Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5KFGZ6uABb1sQlfkE2TIoc?si=8ff748aa4fc64331 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wildchaospodcastBam's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bambam0069Youtube: https://youtube.com/@wildchaospodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@wildchaosshowMeta (Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/TheWildChaosPodcast

    Trump on Trial

It's been another extraordinary week in the ongoing saga of Donald Trump's court battles—one that has seen major developments on multiple legal fronts as the former president continues to dominate headlines and court dockets. I want to take you right into the action of the past few days and give you a sense of just how frenetic, and consequential, these court proceedings have become.Just days ago, the Supreme Court handed a significant victory to Donald Trump's administration by allowing his executive order for sweeping reductions in the federal workforce to move forward for now. This order, issued back in February, directed government agencies to prepare for mass layoffs—so-called “reductions in force”—across the federal bureaucracy. Labor unions, local governments, and advocacy groups were quick to challenge it, concerned about the potential dismantling of large swaths of government operations. Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco initially blocked Trump's plan, but the justices, in a brief opinion, sided with the administration, at least temporarily. The order remains in effect pending appeals, and the Supreme Court's decision, with only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissenting, means federal agencies are once again on notice to prepare for significant changes. Justice Jackson, in her 15-page dissent, warned of “irreparable harm” to the structure of the federal government if Trump's plan is executed before the courts fully resolve the legal questions.Meanwhile, another Trump executive action faced a major legal setback. In New Hampshire, a federal court blocked Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship for children born in the United States. Civil rights organizations including the ACLU and Legal Defense Fund challenged Trump's executive order just days after a Supreme Court ruling that had opened the door for partial enforcement of the controversial policy. On July 10, the federal judge not only issued a preliminary injunction halting the order but also certified a nationwide class to ensure all affected children are protected. According to Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, this ruling reaffirmed the constitutional guarantee of citizenship for all babies born on U.S. soil regardless of their parents' status. And that's not all. The New York criminal case against Donald Trump remains active on the court calendars, with a slew of filings, decisions, and orders continuing through this year. Sentencing audio from early January made headlines and provided a rare public window into proceedings that are as closely watched as they are contentious. With each ruling, appeal, and legal maneuver, the stakes grow higher—not just for Donald Trump, but for the nation's legal and political landscape. Whether it's the fate of thousands of federal workers, the citizenship status of newborns, or the outcome of high-profile criminal trials, Trump's time in the courtroom is shaping American life in real time. Thanks for tuning in, and make sure you come back next week for more updates. Adriel Yong, Orvel Venture Partner, joins Jeremy Au to reflect on five years of career transitions from investing to building startups across Southeast Asia and the US. They unpack how American venture capital has turned inward, the unintended consequences of remote work, and why AI is upending both work and relationships. Through candid stories from fundraising dinners in San Francisco to AI-generated breakup scripts they explore how technology is transforming how we build companies, make decisions, and stay human. 03:12 American and Asian startup growth models differ: In San Francisco, startups often grow fast by selling to other startups and riding internal network effects, while Southeast Asian startups focus on capturing value chains and relationship-based sales. 06:05 Revenue in SF isn't always real: Founders in SF can reach $10 million ARR by selling to friendly peers, but in LA or Southeast Asia, sales are slower and relationship-driven, especially in industries like entertainment. 08:53 US venture capital is becoming protectionist: Where American VCs once backed global founders, they now prioritize companies based in or from the US, making it harder for Southeast Asian startups to access funding. 11:49 AI is replacing VC advisory work: Founders now use large language models to flag red flags in term sheets before reaching out to VCs, shifting the VC's role from explainer to final verifier and negotiation coach. 14:59 AI is eroding help-based relationships: As people ask ChatGPT instead of friends for advice, the everyday opportunities for give-and-take shrink, which could weaken social bonds especially in task-focused societies like Singapore. 18:13 Generative AI amplifies Western perspectives: Tools like ChatGPT default to American individualist values unless prompted otherwise, meaning users across Asia may unconsciously adopt Americanized ways of thinking and problem-solving. 20:53 Graduate employment in Singapore is dropping: Unemployment dipped below 80 percent as MNCs cut back due to trade wars and AI displaces entry-level roles. Many graduates prefer brand-name firms, leaving SME jobs overlooked despite being the bulk of local employment. The concept of 'Self-Determination' has been largely lost within the field of medical "science". After all, germ theory suggests that an alleged microorganism all of .005 µ in stature can and will wreak havoc on the trillions of cells and indigenous microbes composing the human form, and never mind that there may be an inherent intelligence within Natural Design.   Then there's that nasty deck of genetic cards dealt at the moment of conception that holds us forever captive to the sins of our parentage.  To top it all off, shit just happens, as our wise medics shake their heads when delivering the bad news that a patient has fallen prey to a "disease" of idiopathic origin. It's difficult for most to imagine the profound shift in consciousness that occurs with the realization that our well-being is an inside job, and nothing 'out there' has the power to determine our state of health unless we succumb to the fear and irrational options made available through Medicine Inc. Tom Cowan MD joins us for a lively discussion on the subject of 'medical determinism', and we can't think of anyone better equipped to guide us through the many fallacies of conventional science. Until his recent retirement from active practice, Dr. Cowan had a general-medical practice, first in upstate New York, then for 17 years in Peterborough, N.H., and for 17 years in San Francisco. Latent Space: The AI Engineer Podcast — CodeGen, Agents, Computer Vision, Data Science, AI UX and all things Software 3.0

Speak (https://speak.com) may not be very well known to native English speakers, but they have come from a slow start in 2016 to emerge as one of the favorite partners of OpenAI, with their Startup Fund leading and joining their Series B and C as one of the new AI-native unicorns, noting that “Speak has the potential to revolutionize not just language learning, but education broadly”. Today we speak with Speak's CTO, Andrew Hsu, on the journey of building the “3rd generation” of language learning software (with Rosetta Stone being Gen 1, and Duolingo being Gen 2). Speak's premise is that speech and language models can now do what was previously only possible with human tutors—provide fluent, responsive, and adaptive instruction—and this belief has shaped its product and company strategy since its early days. https://www.linkedin.com/in/adhsu/ https://speak.com One of the most interesting strategic decisions discussed in the episode is Speak's early focus on South Korea. While counterintuitive for a San Francisco-based startup, the decision was influenced by a combination of market opportunity and founder proximity via a Korean first employee. South Korea's intense demand for English fluency and a highly competitive education market made it a proving ground for a deeply AI-native product. By succeeding in a market saturated with human-based education solutions, Speak validated its model and built strong product-market fit before expanding to other Asian markets and eventually, globally. The arrival of Whisper and GPT-based LLMs in 2022 marked a turning point for Speak. Suddenly, capabilities that were once theoretical—real-time feedback, semantic understanding, conversational memory—became technically feasible. Speak didn't pivot, but rather evolved into its second phase: from a supplemental practice tool to a full-featured language tutor. This transition required significant engineering work, including building custom ASR models, managing latency, and integrating real-time APIs for interactive lessons. It also unlocked the possibility of developing voice-first, immersive roleplay experiences and a roadmap to real-time conversational fluency. To scale globally and support many languages, Speak is investing heavily in AI-generated curriculum and content. Instead of manually scripting all lessons, they are building agents and pipelines that can scaffold curriculum, generate lesson content, and adapt pedagogically to the learner. This ties into one of Speak's most ambitious goals: creating a knowledge graph that captures what a learner knows and can do in a target language, and then adapting the course path accordingly. This level-adjusting tutor model aims to personalize learning at scale and could eventually be applied beyond language learning to any educational domain. Finally, the conversation touches on the broader implications of AI-powered education and the slow real-world adoption of transformative AI technologies. Despite the capabilities of GPT-4 and others, most people's daily lives haven't changed dramatically. Speak sees itself as part of the generation of startups that will translate AI's raw power into tangible consumer value. The company is also a testament to long-term conviction—founded in 2016, it weathered years of slow growth before AI caught up to its vision. Now, with over $50M ARR, a growing B2B arm, and plans to expand across languages and learning domains, Speak represents what AI-native education could look like in the next decade. Today we are revisiting an October 2023 Berkeley Talks episode in which Ezra Klein, a New York Times columnist and host of the podcast The Ezra Klein Show, discusses the difficulties liberal governments encounter when working to build real things in the real world. He joins in a conversation with Amy Lerman, a UC Berkeley political scientist and director of the Possibility Lab.“To have the future we want, we need to build and invent more of the things that we need,” begins Klein, who has since published the 2025 book Abundance with co-author Derek Thompson. “It's so stupidly simple, so obvious, that it seems weird there could be any need to write articles or podcasts or truly, God forbid, a book about it.” “And yet,” he continues, “the story of America in the 21st century — more than that, the story of liberalism, and particularly California liberalism — is a story of chosen scarcity.” Klein argues that while liberal governments are ambitious in their aims, like addressing climate change, building affordable housing or expanding infrastructure, they are often hampered by the very procedural safeguards and checks designed to protect rights and ensure public input. There are things, he says, that we have an abundance of now — flat screen TVs, iPhones — but we need more of the things that will make real the world in which many of us want to live: “A world where we're not cooking the planet, a world where a firefighter who works to keep San Francisco from burning down can live in the city he works on the daily to save, a world where there is access to the medical care and medications that people need. I care about working backwards from the world I want to the things we need to get there.”This event took place on Oct. 5, 2023, in UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall.
