Resident Evil fans get a packed episode this week with a live trailer reaction from Rancho Cordova Gaming Expo and two standout interviews from Game On Expo. Frank, Phil, and Jonathan break down why the new Resident Evil movie trailer feels closer to survival horror than past film adaptations, focusing on fear, suspense, body horror, and what makes a video game adaptation actually work. Then Tyler sits down with Joe White, the voice of Chris Redfield, and Heidi Anderson Swan, the voice of Jill Valentine, for conversations about their paths into voice acting, the unexpected legacy of Resident Evil, and how performances recorded decades ago still connect with fans today. The episode closes with Joe and Heidi together, reflecting on old-school game recording, convention culture, and the lasting charm of the original Resident Evil era. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro and Rancho Cordova Gaming Expo Setup 01:32 Resident Evil Trailer First Reactions 04:38 Survival Horror, Suspense, and What Past Movies Missed 06:00 Video Game Adaptations, Fallout, The Last of Us, and Silent Hill 09:08 Franchise Pressure, Authenticity, and Nostalgia in Adaptations 13:43 Guest Interview: Joe White on Chris Redfield, Disney, SpongeBob, and Voice Acting 28:22 Guest Interview: Heidi Anderson Swan on Jill Valentine and Resident Evil's Legacy 41:31 Bonus Interview: Joe White and Heidi Anderson Swan on Recording Separately and Resident Evil's Lasting Charm Key Takeaways The new Resident Evil trailer stood out because it leaned into suspense, fear, and atmosphere instead of relying only on gore or action. The panel discussed why a strong video game adaptation does not always need to retell the exact game story, as long as it feels authentic to that world. Joe White shared how he unexpectedly became the voice of Chris Redfield after starting at Disney as a 3D modeler and doing scratch dialogue. Heidi Anderson Swan reflected on Jill Valentine's importance as a tough, capable survival horror hero who did not need saving. Both interviews highlighted how voice acting has changed since the early days of video games, especially when actors recorded alone without seeing or hearing the other performances. Joe and Heidi both emphasized that Resident Evil's fan community has given new meaning to work they never expected to become iconic. Quotes "Everything about it just evoked fear." "I want a new story that lives in that universe." "What fans want is authenticity." "Chris Redfield is really just me, maybe a little bit more dramatic." "It's a gift of a lifetime." "She didn't need saving. And that's what makes her so cool." Show IntroIt's about damn time we lightened it up, like fully and completely, Jesse. And I thought what better way than to catch you up with modern slang. Who knows? Maybe it'll make your next barn sale even more fun!(JH) And Jesse...I'm gonna start REALLY easy. This first batch comes from FOX 5's Tyler Thrasher. Here goes:"Clanker" is a derogatory term for robots or artificial intelligence. The term originated from the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated series, where it was used as a slur for battle droids, and is now being used again as robots and AI become more prominent in daily life, according to a video of middle schoolers explaining "Clanker" to their teacher, user @mr_lindsay_sped, on TikTok. If your middle-school student is used to a Roomba at home cleaning the floors, you may start to hear the word "clanker" being thrown around as if they are having an argument with one another."Crashout" means to "throw a fit," "lash out," or have a "meltdown". The term has a new meaning for Gen Alpha, as previous generations used it to mean "go to sleep hard." This one has been around a bit longer than "Clanker," but is likely the most common Gen Alpha slang term you will hear going into this new school year. To be honest, at least this one has some usefulness for adults as well. Because doesn't inflation, traffic and the 5 a.m. alarm make us all want to "crashout?""67" is from a viral meme associated with the song "Doot Doot (6 7)" by Skrilla. It is also linked to NBA star LaMelo Ball, who is 6'7" tall. It can be used for basketball references, to mean someone is "very tall," or in a comedic context to mean "so-so."Chopped - No, parents. This isn't a reference to The Food Network. "Chopped," in this context, means "bad," "ruined," "messed up" or of "poor quality.""Wow, did you see McKynleigh's outfit today? It is chopped." SDIYBT - Where do we even begin with this one? Here goes nothing. This is a niche internet acronym with conflicting definitions, including "Start diggin in yo butt twin" from a SpongeBob meme and "Stay driven, inspire yourself, be true." It is an internet acronym blending casual speech and texting culture. It is more likely the first one they're referencing, if we are being totally honest. Meltmaxxing- is a meme where you film yourself appearing to "melt" by letting your face go slack and double-chinned.The term Opp is a shortened version of "your enemy. Aura, an updated version of "vibe," refers to their perceived stylishness and strong presence.Maxxing, which is a slang term for optimizing one's physiSend us Fan MailSupport the showSupport Curious Cat, an independent, human-made podcast!Anxious about AI? Scott Xiao, Co-Founder and CEO of Luminopia, is developing a novel, FDA -cleared VR-based treatment for neurovisual disorders with a primary focus on amblyopia, lazy eye, in children aged 4- 12 years old. This approach uses popular TV shows to create an engaging, effective therapy that trains the eyes to work together and is designed as a replacement for traditional eye patching. Clinical data indicate that the vision improvements from this therapy are durable and that the VR approach is well-received by children and their parents. Scott explains, "We are pioneering a new class of treatments using virtual reality to treat various neurovisual disorders. So these are conditions where patients have vision loss that's driven by deficiencies in the brain, in the visual cortex. We're starting with amblyopia, which is often known as lazy eye. It's the number one cause of vision loss in children around the world. And it's an area of significant unmet need. There hasn't been much in the way of new treatments for decades. Typically, patients will go through glasses followed by eye patches, which is exactly what it sounds like. You take a patch, and you stick it on your stronger eye for multiple hours a day. And that's a really challenging treatment for a lot of kids and families. So we saw an opportunity to use technology to create something better, something that would be more engaging and more effective." "We've developed a VR-based approach that takes popular TV shows like SpongeBob and Sesame Street and turns them into a treatment by modifying how the images are shown to each eye. And this technology has been extensively validated at this point in multiple clinical trials. It was cleared by the FDA, and it's now commercially available. So over the past year, we've really been making strides on the commercial front, increasing awareness for the product among physicians and patients, and securing insurance coverage for the product." #Luminopia #Amblyopia #PediatricOphthalmology #VirtualReality #DigitalTherapeutics #LazyEye #VisionTherapy #Optometry #PediatricCare #HealthcareInnovation #MedicalTechnology luminopia.com Download the transcript here

Plus: Should Clara get to invent a nickname for Mum in return? Meanwhile, nine-year-old Zachary is in court after being banned from his two favourite TV shows, SpongeBob SquarePants and Horrid Henry. According to Mum and Dad, too much screen time is making him "cheeky" and he’s copying the characters a little too closely! WAKE UP AMERICA | THE SPLC WAS PAYING THE KKK, THE SUPREME COURT'S SECRET POWER GRAB, AND PETE DAVIDSON'S $700K MISTAKE Yesterday the federal government indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on eleven counts of fraud and money laundering — accusing the organization of secretly funneling three million dollars in donor money to Klansmen, neo-Nazis, and Aryan Nations members through shell companies, in order to manufacture the very extremism they were raising hundreds of millions of dollars to fight. Today we go through every line of that indictment — the prepaid cards, the shell companies, the Unite the Right connection, the hate map that was used to blacklist conservative America, and the question nobody in the legacy media will ask: how many of the dots on that map were kept alive on donor money? Then Judge Andrew Napolitano joins us to break open a story buried for ten years — how Chief Justice John Roberts and four colleagues secretly rewired the Supreme Court in February 2016 while Justice Scalia was on vacation, erased two hundred years of constitutional precedent, and gave birth to the Shadow Docket. This one will make your blood boil. Plus O.W. Root of The Fitting Room joins us on Pete Davidson's $700K tattoo removal journey, the cleanskin vindication, and what his laser bill tells us about American men, identity, and a culture that confused trend-following for self-expression.

Nickelodeon Animation just got rolled into CBS Studios -- Paramount's post-Skydance housecleaning turned the once-independent animation powerhouse behind SpongeBob, Avatar, and Rugrats into nothing more than a branded label under CBS, with longtime CBS exec Alec Botnick now running the whole show while the old guard gets shuffled off to consulting gigs. Yeah after years of pretending Nick was still the wild creative playground for kids' TV, the corporate suits decided "scale and synergy" beats letting animators actually cook -- so now every new episode of your childhood nostalgia machine routes straight through the CBS machine while the era of standalone Nick originals quietly dies in a boardroom memo. Two officers from the Kotzebue, Alaska Police Department enter a living room and ask the two small children watching SpongeBob, “Did someone call the police?” One just points to a bedroom door. Inside, a man, Anthony, cradles a young woman's body drenched in blood. He says she's his girlfriend, Jennifer. That he too, was just watching SpongeBob in the living room when he heard a ‘pop' from the bedroom and found her with a ‘self-inflicted' gun shot wound to her chin. An investigation begins. The rifle used measures 27 and 1/8th inches long from barrel to trigger. Jennifer's arm is 26 and 3/16th inches long. Nothing comes of it. The medical examiner observes red strangulation marks around Jennifer's neck. The investigation is over within one day. Jennifer's death is declared a self exit. They don't test for gunshot residue on the boyfriend, Anthony. They don't look into his past record of abuse and SA. After all, Anthony lives with his father, Clement Richards Senior, the mayor of the Northwest Arctic Borough. Surely this was a horrific one time tragic event… Two years later another young woman's body is found one again, at the mayor's home. Alan reflects on the fine line between clinical intuition and cognitive bias. Sparked by a failed trivia question about SpongeBob SquarePants, Alan dives into the psychology of decision-making, exploring Daniel Kahneman's "fast vs. slow" thinking and the pitfalls of confirmation bias. Drawing on 30 years of dental practice, he discusses how "gut feelings" are often just highly trained pattern recognition for common ailments like decay and pulpitis. However, he issues a cautionary tale for practitioners: while your gut is an excellent compass to get you into the ballpark of a diagnosis, it's a terrible judge. Alan emphasizes the importance of "clearing the deck" for every patient, using objective testing to challenge your initial instincts rather than simply seeking to prove them right. Some links from the show: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman – The foundational book mentioned by Alan regarding System 1 and System 2 thinking.
