Let's keep the vibe rolling with this Part 2 of the Pitchfork Music Festival Series, and this fun episode features my conversations with Raleigh-Durham based artist Rosali, the eclectic duo Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises, and the Chicago-based rap duo Angry Blackmen.   Rosali's latest album, Bite Down, is steeped in super cool folk rock vibes and equally stellar songwriting. Rosali have a great conversation, and we not only talk about dogs and N Carolina life, but we get into all kinds of rich terrain including how she strives be vulnerable in her songwriting and what the means for her in other areas of her life.Lira and Caufield bring a super eclectic energy as they are both very much practitioners of the DIY ethos. This amazing couple have been friends now for over a decade and we talk about how they've structured their life in Lawrence, Kansas around their unique artform.  They truly walk the walk!Brian and Quentin are Chicago natives who bring their amazing energy to the Pitchfork stage for the first time. Their new album, The Legend of ABM, is deep and dark, and we talk about the issues that we all face, and Brian tells me about his effort to help others know that they are not alone. These two big-hearted giants talk to me about their lives both on and off the stage in this super vibey and very candid conversation.Make sure to give a listen to these amazing in-person interviews!!! For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

Today's episode is about "Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche", a 2021 doc about the British punk legend and X-Ray Spex leader, directed by Celeste Bell and Paul Sng. The movie was selected by our guests, Sweeping Promises. Check out their outstanding new album Good Living Is Coming for You. Poly Styrene, born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, was the child of a Scottish-Irish mother and a Somali father. Celeste Bell, her daughter, narrates and appears in the film in addition to being its co-director. It's a very personal examination of Poly's life and career as Celeste deals with the aftermath of Poly's 2011 death from cancer. We learn about Poly's challenging youth as a mixed-race child in postwar Britain, her explosion as a teenage icon in the early British punk scene, and the mental health issues that arose as she encountered New York for the first time. If you're looking for a movie where John Lydon and Sid Vicious come off as good guys, this is not the film for you. Poly went through several hospitalizations, became a Hare Krishna, lost custody of and later reunited with Celeste, and continued to pursue her artistic ambitions through it all. It's a beautiful movie and it will hopefully continue to bring more attention to Poly Styrene's life and work. Sweeping Promises - "You Shatter" from the 2023 album Good Living Is Coming For You on Feel It Records. Sweeping Promises weren't kidding when they titled their second LP Good Living Is Coming for You. The duo of Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug used the advance they received from Sub Pop Records to purchase a home in Lawrence, Kansas. In an interview with Pitchfork, they explain how they used the back of the house to build a recording studio where they crafted their latest album. (They've also recorded 40 other bands there in the past year alone!) Lira and Caufield describe today's Song of the Day as “our ode to being a hammer,” something they surely understand after their renovations. Catch Sweeping Promises on September 15th at Madame Lou's. Sweeping Promises - "Pain Without A Touch," a 2021 single on Feel It Records / Sub Pop.  On last year's debut LP Hunger for a Way Out, Sweeping Promises premiered an infectious lo-fi post-punk sound, with angular guitars, synthpop sweeps, and Lira Mondal bold, buoyant vocals. Today's Song of the Day is their first single for Sub Pop, who signed the duo up last month. Their new wave groove still firmly in place, the new track shows the group's evolution — but, with the overdubs recorded in co-founder Caufield Schnug's parents' bathroom, Sweeping Promises stay true to their lo-fi beginnings. As broadcast October 1, 2021 with plenty of extra attitude for you podcast punters.  We welcome one of our favorites back to the show tonight a week after they dropped their 2nd career album.  Alex Dezen & Amber Bollinger have not just been putting together one of the wildest post-punk outfits over the last several years with Broken Baby, but they have also put running one of the best homegrown rock labels out there as well with Poor Man Records.  We talked with the duo about their new album "Late Stage Optimism," which of course divulged into many different arguments like the merits of spiders, along with an endless game of "face on" between the two.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A GirlThe Replacements – Bastards of YoungYoung Winona – Killer DaisiesEgg Drop Soup – Whiskey PriestShopping – InitiativeSweeping Promises – Hunger for a Way OutTummyache – MedianFEET - Ad BluePart II (33:03)Night Hikes - IonaHuman Barbie – Get A LifeJaguar Sun – Make It OutExtra Special – I Hate LoveMarianne Faithfull – Broken EnglishBroken Baby – MeaniacBroken Baby – Jack White Money Part III (63:23)Broken Baby – He Likes MePom Poko – Like A LadyGo Fever – Long RunOhmme – MineReckling – SpidersConcrete Blonde – JoeyPart IV (95:05)Broken Baby – Cloud Coverage The Exploding Hearts – Sleeping Aides and RazorbladesTummyache – DIY!!Pip Blom – You Don't Want ThisSnowy Band – Living with MyselfBlur – Tender

Lira Mondal of the band Sweeping Promises shares her story of growing up in Arkansas as a nerdy choir kid longing to fit into an alternative rock subculture that she isn't sure she's cool enough for. As an only child of a single Bangladeshi mom, she doesn't feel like she blends in with her mostly white peers. She finds confidence in her voice but dreams of playing guitar or bass in a band and getting to rock out to the kind of music she loves the most - especially her favorite band Interpol. Lira provides some loving advice to her younger self and then talks with Chelsea about shared experiences as only children of single moms. She also recommends listeners check out the organization Trust Tree which holds music and arts camps for girls in Arkansas to help them bring their creative visions to life.
