A Muddy Future for Louisiana Crawfish

In “A Muddy Future for Louisiana Crawfish,” Gravy producer Eva Tesfaye traces the aftermath of the summer of 2023, when a severe drought in Louisiana devastated the 2024 crawfish season. The dry soil and extreme heat killed the crawfish while they were still burrowed underground, meaning when farmers flooded their fields in the fall, they found their harvest would be dismal for the spring. That caused both farmers and consumers to suffer. In Louisiana, where crawfish are normally around $3 per pound, prices reached as high as $9 a pound. In Texas, it was even higher, around $12 a pound.   Tesfaye followed this story while it was happening, and it left her with a new question: With climate change bringing more extreme weather, are there ways to protect the state's beloved mudbugs? To answer that question, she talked to Michael Moreaux, a crawfish farmer experimenting with different agricultural practices to attempt to produce healthy crawfish that can weather anything.   By focusing on the health of his female crawfish, using native grasses to feed them and filtering the water in his ponds, Michael seems to be producing tasty, resilient crawfish. He wants farmers and academics alike to take a look at his work, but the way the crawfish industry is set up makes it difficult for farmers to innovate, and academia doesn't have enough crawfish specialists to solve all the problems threatening the state's harvest.   One person interested in Michael's methods is the young farmer Bruno Sagrera, who is struggling to break into the crawfish industry. Having grown up on a crawfish farm, he believes there are dire problems with the way crawfish are farmed today, but can't get his family to buy into the practices he wants to try—so he's on his own.   Both Michael and Bruno want to improve crawfish farming practices so that Louisianans can continue to eat the beloved mudbugs for generations to come. Satan's Demonic Forces      In addition to all that Satan is doing, he has at his disposal an army of fallen angels to help him execute his plans in the world. Of course, these fallen angels are restrained by God in what they can accomplish. Still, like people, they are given a modicum of freedom to act and to influence the affairs of this world.      Angels are basically classified as either righteous or evil. The former retain their holy state and service to God and are called elect angels (1 Tim 5:21), whereas the latter have defected from their original state and continue in constant rebellion against God. Satan is the leader of all fallen angels (Matt 25:41; cf. Rev 12:7, 9), which Scripture designates as evil spirits (1 Sam 16:14; Luke 7:21), demons (Matt 8:31), and unclean spirits (Mark 5:1-4). These have been operating for millennia trying to frustrate the purposes of God.      All angels, whether good or bad, are organized for service and effectiveness. Michael is called an archangel (Jude 1:9), a chief prince (Dan 10:13), and is assigned the task of guarding Israel (Dan 12:1). Gabriel is a messenger angel who was sent to deliver important messages to God's people (Dan 8:16; 9:21-22; Luke 1:19; 26-38). Both Michael and Gabriel are recorded in Scripture as battling fallen angels who appear as commanders of regions of the world (Dan 10:12-13, 21). One fallen angel is called “the prince of Persia” and the other “the prince of Greece” (Dan 10:20). These last two angels function as Satan's emissaries to promote his purposes, and are part of a larger group that Paul called the forces of darkness (Eph 6:12). Demons have the ability to possess the bodies of men (Luke 11:24-26), animals (Gen 3:1-5; Mark 5:11-13; 2 Cor 11:3), and sometimes cause physical and mental illness (Matt 9:32-33; Luke 8:27).      Demons have some freedom, but not beyond the boundaries God has established (Job 1:1-21). God sometimes uses fallen angels to accomplish His sovereign purposes (1 Sam 16:14-16; 2 Cor 12:7-10), just as He sometimes uses sinful people to bring about His will (Acts 2:23-24; 4:27-28). The final destiny of Satan and demons will be the Lake of Fire, which God created as a special place of punishment for them (Matt 25:41). Those who reject Christ as Savior will join Satan in the Lake of Fire (Rev 20:11-15). Those who accept Jesus as Savior are forgiven all their sins (Eph 1:7; Heb 10:10-14), given eternal life (John 3:16; 10:28), and will spend forever in heaven (John 14:1-3).      Fallen angels are involved in the affairs of mankind. The person who operates by negative volition aligns himself with Satan and his forces. Negative volition leads to idolatry, and idolatry leads to immorality (Rom 1:18-32), both individually and nationally. The worship of idols is the worship of demons (Lev 17:7; Deut 32:17; 1 Cor 10:19-21). Demons generally led the pagan nations into idolatry, which God's people were not to practice (Deut 18:9-14). However, when God's people mingled with them, they learned their idolatrous practices (1 Ki 11:1-8), and even created their own idols (1 Ki 12:26-33), which eventuated in human sacrifice (2 Ki 17:7-23; Psa 106:35-38; cf. 2 Ki 16:1-4; 21:1-9; Jer 32:30-35; Ezek 16:20-21; 20:31; 23:37). When human rulers turned away from God, He would use evil spirits to discipline them (Judg 9:23; 1 Sam 16:14-15). This resulted in the disciplined person experiencing mental madness and murderous behavior (1 Sam 18:10-12; cf. 1 Sam 19:9-10). God used an evil spirit to bring about the military defeat and death of King Ahab (2 Chron 18:18-22). Dr. Steven R. Cook

196 | A New Approach to an Old Business Model: How Cigar Entrepreneur Michael Herklots Built a Successful Brand on a Tight Budget

Marketing your business on a budget?  In this episode, Michael Herklots shares how he used the power of storytelling and personal branding to build his luxury cigar business from the ground up. Michael has worked in the Premium Cigar Industry since 1999. He served as Vice President of Nat Sherman International, responsible for creating and maintaining the company's portfolio of premium cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories. Most recently, he is the co-founder of Ferio Tego, which has been named the “Brand of the Year” by Cigar Dojo and “New Company of the Year” by Halfwheel.  Michael is a Certified Master Tobacconist by Tobacconist University and a thoughtful business leader with 20 years of experience in specialty retail and wholesale luxury goods.  The Power of Storytelling When Michael and his co-founder decided to launch a cigar company during COVID-19, there was no shortage of obstacles. Aside from the challenge of selling cigars during a respiratory pandemic, they also had limited capital. Without the budget to hire a marketing team or ad agency, they leaned on something more powerful: their story.  Over and over again, they told the story of Ferio Tego, their backgrounds in the cigar industry, and their vision for the brand. Both Michael and his co-founder Brendon Scott had plenty of connections in the cigar world, but they took a unique approach to every conversation. Every time they met with a potential partner, they would lean into different aspects of their story. For instance, smaller companies were more likely to relate to their story of bootstrapping the business from the ground up, while larger companies wanted to see the data and volume.  Innovate the Process, Not the Product In today's fast-paced world, many companies shift their marketing and add new products every week–but ultimately, that hurts your brand recognition and makes it harder for retailers to sell your products. The more consistent you stay, the greater the chance consumers will start to relate to and remember your brand.  While the Ferio Tego brand is consistent, Michael is constantly innovating other aspects of the business. He and his co-founder have taken a unique approach in partnering with other cigar companies. They now have factories in multiple countries without the overhead of managing their own warehouses. Enjoy this episode with founder Michael Herklots… Soundbytes 17:46-18:30 “New businesses, we don't have a marketing budget, we don't have an advertising agency. We don't have four people who are building decks on what is Ferio Tego and what isn't Ferio Tego and creating all of those thoughtful pyramids. Who has time for that? We're fighting for our lives every day, trying to get another sale. And so what we lack in that sophisticated, deep infrastructure of brand, we have what a lot of those departments crave and try to create which is the absolute authentic story of time served and process and how we do things.” 19:20-19:37 “What they are trying to do is to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we have, just as a consequence of being a small startup, we're creating a brand that is authentic. What you see is what you get.” 27:09-27:37  “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently, so that you as a retailer, can tell the same story over and over to your consumers. The consumers can learn that story and share it with their peers, and by the time they learn it, they can catch back up with the brand, and we're still singing the same song. We've abandoned that in so many industries.”  54:04-54:50 “There are times when you look at something that just seems so overwhelming, whether it's something as small as playing a gig, or something as big as launching a company. And to get over the hump of it, I have to believe that the opportunity and the idea and the consideration–all of the work has been done for a reason. All those opportunities are lined up for a reason and therefore I have to have faith that this is meant to be.”  Quotes “They're trying to create brands that feel authentic, whereas we, as a consequence of being a small startup, are creating a brand that is authentic.” “As a Brand Builder and a storyteller, it's incumbent on me to tell the same story over and over and over again consistently.” “It's become innovative to go back to building the brand.” “It's probably naive to think that it's possible to be everything to everyone. What I try to do is be something to everyone.” “I don't know anyone who would consider themselves an expert. Even the most famous, most successful are still practicing all the time.” “You have to live within what's authentic to you and let your audience find you.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Ferio Tego cigars: https://www.feriotego.com/ Connect with Michael on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelherklots/

Being an entrepreneur involves risk, stress, and constant challenges, and not everyone is comfortable with the uncertainty. When it comes to hiring, they stress the importance of finding niche team members who are passionate about their specific roles, such as marketing or sales.Michael initially adopted the Dave Ramsey approach, avoiding debt and focusing on wholesaling due to its lower risk. Brian attributes his success to consistent hard work, focusing on small wins and incremental progress. Both Michael and Brian highlight the significance of setting and achieving small goals, which gradually build confidence to tackle more significant challenges. The conversation veers into their shared appreciation for spending time with their children and exploring alternative education methods like homeschooling. They discuss how entrepreneurship allows for more flexibility in structuring family life.Brian shares insights into his Puerto Rico home, where a close-knit community fosters relationships, but he acknowledges the trade-offs regarding limited opportunities.Michael elaborates on his business organization, highlighting a healthy margin of around 50% for his wholesale operation. The theme of this episode is mystery, as the guys discuss things in the NBA that don't make sense to them and talk about what they would like to know if there was a future-telling crystal ball.First up, we start from a place of joy, and bringing joy to Michael Pina this week is Devin Booker being the league's best point guard despite the fact that he's a shooting guard known for his scoring. It serves as a reminder that even superstar NBA players can improve during their prime. When we get to mysteries, Michael is curious why the Cleveland Cavaliers aren't better than they are. They seem to have regressed from last season despite having a roster better suited to what they're trying to do, and the offense looks worse when Donovan Mitchell is on the court. Why?Dan is confused by the rapid ascension of Chet Holmgren. We've never really seen a player like this before and we've certainly never seen one be this good this fast. Is he already an All-NBA player? Are the Thunder already championship contenders? Both Michael and Dan listed Anthony Davis as a mystery. Michael is wondering why such a great player isn't more dominant and is seemingly forgotten when we talk about the league's best centers. Dan is curious why Anthony Davis can't seem to shoot from outside anymore.Looking into a crystal ball that can tell us the future, Michael and Dan both want to know if Zion Williamson will round into form and get the explosive burst back to his game that he was previously known for or if this is just who he is now.We close the show with the closing five, where Michael talks about children's TV shows and hanging out with Jimmy Butler, and recommendations for pop culture artwork and a cringe-comedy TV show.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of the rational egoist, the psychology of self-esteem takes centre stage. Both Michael and his guest, James Stevens Valliant, recognise Nathaniel Branden as a pioneering figure in the realm of cognitive psychology. The conversation delves into the profound influence of our thoughts on our actions, emphasising that what we think significantly shapes our consciousness. It's asserted that a comprehensive study of human consciousness is incomplete without a thorough examination of thinking and rationality. Emotions, often implicit, are revealed as evaluations. These emotions, whether rooted in childhood experiences, preverbal moments, or traumatic events, profoundly affect our subconscious. Even positive emotions and early interactions with parents play a role in shaping our emotional landscape. The dialogue underscores that our perceptions of the world around us lead to conclusions that, in turn, mould our consciousness. Central to this discussion is the concept that the most crucial evaluation we make is our self-assessment. Consequently, all psychology, as discussed, is intricately linked to self-esteem. The example of social anxiety is used to illustrate how self-evaluation influences our actions and feelings.A key takeaway is the assertion that self-esteem is not merely a matter of perception; it must be earned through introspection and meaningful actions. Nathaniel Branden's work is highlighted as instrumental in putting self-esteem at the forefront, with his deep connections to Ayn Rand's philosophy. Additionally, the podcast emphasises the importance of examining healthy psychology and the functioning of a sound mind, not just focusing on issues related to mental health. It's posited that emotions can either contribute to mental well-being or drive one towards mental illness. Since we inherently value ourselves, the discussion encourages positive self-evaluation and nurturing high self-esteem. Michael Leibowitz is a renowned philosopher, political activist, and the esteemed host of the Rational Egoist podcast. Inspired by the philosophical teachings of Ayn Rand, Leibowitz passionately champions the principles of reason, rational self-interest, and individualism, seeking to empower others through his compelling work. Beyond his impactful podcasting endeavours, Leibowitz fearlessly engages in lively political debates, advocating for the protection of individual rights and freedoms through compelling YouTube videos and insightful interviews. His unwavering commitment to these ideals has garnered him a dedicated following of like-minded individuals.Leibowitz is a versatile author, co-authoring the thought-provoking book titled "Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime." This groundbreaking work delves into societal attitudes surrounding punishment and rehabilitation, shedding light on how misguided approaches have contributed to the rise of crime and recidivism.Additionally, he has authored the book "View from a Cage: From Convict to Crusader for Liberty," offering an intimate portrayal of his personal journey while exploring the philosophies that influenced his transformation. As you embark on your intellectual journey, join Michael Leibowitz as he advocates for reason, individualism, and the pursuit of self-interest, inspiring others to embrace a philosophy that empowers and uplifts the human spirit. For a deeper exploration of his ideas and insights, don't miss the opportunity to read "Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime," co-authored by Michael Leibowitz. So today I want to share the birth story of our fourth child. It's always pretty vulnerable and a little overwhelming to share a birth story. To me, it's so personal. It is so private, so special and sacred. But at the same time, I love hearing from other moms their experiences, because I feel like that's what I attribute to my own growth and just understanding of what birth can be. Each time I have a baby, I feel so inspired by the process and I feel like I'm kind of born anew with this new baby. I also feel like we've learned so much over the years and the difference between what it was like when I had our firstborn, Jack, to this most recent birth has been like night and day. Both Michael and I have grown so much, we've learned so much about birth and the experience, we felt more empowered and more confident in making decisions that are right for us and our family and our children. I have been asked a lot of questions like: What was the birth experience like? Why did you choose a birth center? Tell us about the baby. What's the name? Now that we've discussed the strategy and capital behind deal-making, and the due diligence required in conducting deals, let's talk about how to manage your assets. Ultimately, this is the step where quite frankly, the value comes to reality. Both Michael and Spencer have been on the development side of the real estate business and this episode features their advice when it comes to assets in real estate. What's interesting is that real estate is a relationship business, it's a people business, and this gets to the deepest parts of achieving anything. The right team, the right skill sets, you bring it together and magic can happen. When it comes to asset management, there was a decision at the higher level to select the personnel. So it was a personnel selection.

“The Difficulties of Getting Modern Safety Into Old-School Education”with Michael Cooke, Vice-President, Social & Environmental Responsibility at Jabil Group“Why aren't these concepts being taught in high-schools and trade schools?” he asked defiantly. “Well”, I said, “its not for lack of trying. But it's not as easy as you'd think.”“Why” he demanded, obviously not impressed. “Well, one thing is money. Even though it's significantly less expensive (80% discount) the schools want the school boards to pay for it out of their budget, and the school board wants the schools to pay for it out of theirs. They both want the students to get the training. They just want the other party to pay for it."“Oh”, he said, and walked away…However, not everyone did “walk away” figuratively speaking. A few other “brave souls” have also ventured into the arena. They have made some significant efforts to bring modern day safety technology and methodology to education. Michael Cooke is one of those people. His efforts started with a previous employer, but he has carried on with the Jabil Group. Both Michael and I understand the importance of getting safety into education. We also understand some of the difficulties and that the financial aspect mentioned before is just one challenge. Trying to train teachers is another (they don't make the best students). Despite these difficulties, there have also been some tremendous successes in places like Brazil, Colombia, Scotland, Switzerland, The Philippines, Suriname and of course Canada and the USA.To access the resources mentioned in the show, go to:www.booboobandits.comor www.larrywilsonlive.com/wilson

The pair talk about beautiful midfielders, as they breakdown the 3-1 Liverpool victory over Spurs as they heap praise on Thiago and Ndombele as the standout players of the match. They break down the issues that Spurs are running into this season while praising Liverpool's resilience in the title race even as they are rocked by injuries. Both Michael and Albert have no words of positivity for Chelsea's appointment of Thomas Tuchel though, calling it at best a "lateral move". In Manchester, they are afraid of the defensive prowess of Man City and their wealth of scary attacking options while they are excited to play a suddenly stuttering Man United. In the Arsenal segment, they break down the shock loan move for Martin Odegaard as well as the busy activity that Edu has been pulling off in the winter transfer window.
