CANCER NEW MOON JULY 5: CAN SELF-COMPASSION LEAD TO COMPASSION FOR OTHERS?

JOIN SHERI HORN HASAN WHEN THIS WEEK'S PODCAST DROPS @KARMIC EVOLUTION DOT COM JULY 5 as we say “happy birthday” to America, which turned 248 years old on July 4!Given the current state of the nation, it's time to review both its past and its future—especially within the context of the triggering of our first exact Pluto return, which perfected initially on February 20, 2022 & whose effects are still being felt now. The fact that America is now in a long-term state of transformation is, at this point, undeniable, and the only questions now are how long will this transformational period last & what will be the end result? It seems impossible to deny that the United States of America, a Cancer Sun nation, is having a recurrence of the energies of the late 1770's since transiting Pluto first returned to its natal place on February 20, 2022 & it repercussions are still being felt. To prove this, we need only look at the major Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity issued on July 1--during the waning portion of the previous Gemini New Moon cycle--which essentially anoints a U.S. president a king.Given that this is what the original colonists fought against during the American Revolutionary War—which lasted from 1775-1783—it would seem we've been thrust back in time to relive a similar situation now.Is it possible the current state of chaos & confusion related to the upcoming November 5 U.S. presidential election is the result of an undeniably disastrous June 27 debate performance by President Biden two days before Saturn stationed retrograde on June 29 & less than a week before Neptune's station retrograde July 2? Well, it certainly seems these heavenly retrogrades have thrust this nation back into a crisis of wondering who will lead us through not only current, but future, crises & whether that person is up to the job…We look in this podcast as the prescient writing of NY-based astrologer Michael Lutin, who wrote in the December 2006 issue of Vanity Fair Magazine that as transiting Pluto in Capricorn reconjoined its natal position in the U.S. birth chart that:“The words "patriot" and "treason" will lose their meaning, and in some cases they will become interchangeable. What is treason to one person will be patriotism to another—just as it was back in the 1760s and 70s. The country's mood will become darker and much more conservative. It's not going to be a matter of Democrat or Republican anymore, because the new ideologies will bleed across party lines.”We explore, too, how this July 5 Cancer New Moon--which pits Juno, the asteroid goddess of “the partner” in Virgo against Saturn retrograde in Pisces--poses barriers & boundaries in the realm of partnership. This is echoed as well in the grand cardinal cross formed by both luminaries in opposition to dwarf planet Ceres in authoritative Capricorn. This leaves us at a crossroads as they all square the transiting karmic Libra South Node & Aries North Node at this lunation. If we look at this in the context of Washington, D.C., and the June 27 U.S. presidential debate between Joe Biden & Donald Trump, we can see Juno in Virgo's critical nature against a weak-appearing father (read: authority figure.) As Jungian astrologer Liz Greene puts it in her book “Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil,” Saturn in Pisces represents, among other things, “a weak father.”Tune in—today or anytime—to KARMIC EVOLUTION DOT COM to learn more about the triggering of America's Pluto return & how we're in the thick of it now. And how criticism of the current president became louder as we approached the Mercury in Leo opposition to Pluto in Aquarius. July 3.We'll look at Venus entering Leo as we head toward July 11 & her opposition to Pluto by July 12, & whether or not there will be increased resistance to funding the campaigns of both sitting President Biden and his opponent Donald Trump. It's already in the ethers right now for Biden as we can clearly see.All this & more astro news you can use—including Venus's square wounded healer Chiron July 5 & 6, trines of the Sun & Venus to Neptune Rx July 10 & 11, and that Venus/Pluto opposition July 12 as we head toward the Cancer New Moon's first quarter square July 13! See you later! Namaste…

Author Mark Seal joins Tim to talk with Mark about the subject of his popular new book about the making of The Godfather movie. The book is called, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Mark has is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair where he's covered scandals, history makers and pop culture icons. This episode was originally released January 10, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/221_-_The_Making_of_The_Godfather_auphonic.mp3 The Godfather was the first of three motion pictures directed by Francis Ford Coppola about the fictional Corleone crime family. The box office hit was released in 1972, and was followed by sequels in 1974 and 1990. The original Godfather film was inspired by the novel of the same name that was written by Mario Puzo and published in 1969. All of the films were distributed by Paramount Pictures and generated roughly $512 million worldwide. The film franchise won nine Academy Awards. This coming March will mark the 50th anniversary of when the Godfather first hit the big screens. The movie centers on Don Vito Corleone and his family. Marlon Brando plays the Don. The Don declines an offer to get into the narcotics business with another crime family, which is led by Virgil Sollozzo. This creates problems. Don Corleone becomes a marked man. Don Corleone's oldest boy is Sonny Corleone. He's played by James Caan. Sonny takes over the crime family while his father recovers. Meanwhile, Sonny's little brother Michael – who is played by Al Pacino – is recruited to exact revenge on Sollozzo. As the gang wars heat up, Michael is sent to Sicily to lay low for a while. That's where he meets his first wife. The violence follows him there when his young bride is killed. Back in New York, Michael's older brother Sonny is killed in an ambush attack. By now, Don Vito Corleone has recovered from the assassination attempt on his life, but he decides to turn over the control of the family business to Michael. There are plots and sub-plots, but through it all, Michael emerges as a force to be reckoned with, and Al Pacino goes from a relative unknown to a Hollywood super star. Mark Seal first wrote about the making of The Godfather years ago in his work for Vanity Fair Magazine. Devin: What do you see, JohnMatthew, as your superpower?JohnMatthew: My superpower is a committed life.“There are cities that are literally separated by a zip code; in one zip code, you may see a life expectancy of 80, 85 years of age and in another that butts right up against it, you may see a life expectancy of 65 years, 70 years of age,” explains JohnMatthew Douglas, a leading authority on social determinants of health in helping to define his discipline.Health is measured in many ways, but life expectancy is a simple, easy-to-understand barometer for the impact of social circumstances on population and individual health. Wealth, in other words, is “absolutely” and “intrinsically” linked to life expectancy, he says. One of the ways that individuals can play a role in reducing socioeconomic gaps that accelerate death and cause poor health is crowdfund investing–impact crowdfunding.“Within the United States, we have an environment within which 80 percent of business owners are white–actually, a little bit more than that,” JohnMatthew says. “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 14.5, 15% Hispanic, approximately 2.4% or so are Black-owned businesses, and then the rest are dispersed among our diverse population.”Noting that Black-owned businesses are perceived as having a higher rate of failure, he says, “This is occurring not because of a lack of will and desire and passion, great idea, great solution. But it's occurring because of a lack of access to the resources and tools and knowledge that an entrepreneur or small business would need to ensure their success.”Crowdfund investing is a tool we can all use to address this lack of funding.JohnMatthew consults with the Lonely Entrepreneur, “a SaaS platform that makes it easier for not only for Black and Brown communities of entrepreneurs but all entrepreneurs actually, to access the knowledge, tools and resources that they need to ensure their success.”By investing in diverse founders, we are directly addressing the social determinants of health in a constructive way toward closing gaps in health outcomes.JohnMatthew has developed his expertise and a successful career serving people because he has followed the counsel of Rev. Martin Luther King to have a “committed life,” making it his superpower.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews John Matthew Douglas, co-founder of Nello Health and I Press Forward LLC, on the Superpowers for Good show.* John Matthew Douglas is an authority on social determinants of health and explains that social determinants of health are about the environment we live in and the barriers that may hinder our health and well-being.* There is a connection between social determinants of health and life expectancy, both globally and within specific communities, with wealthier areas having longer life expectancies than impoverished ones.* Nelo Health is using technology and the metaverse to address social determinants of health and improve patient outcomes and the overall healthcare system.* Upstream interventions focus on addressing neglected social determinants such as education and economic empowerment to position individuals for a better life and reduce reliance on downstream interventions.* Crowdfunding can help address health concerns by providing funding to diverse founders who are traditionally excluded from capital markets, leading to positive impacts on health outcomes and communities.* John Matthew's superpower is living a committed life, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to redefine greatness as an individual's capacity to serve others.* He shares an example of his mentorship program, I Press Forward, which successfully impacted the lives of at-risk middle school students through the collaboration of professionals, including Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite.* The program helped improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance of the students, emphasizing the importance of passion, vision, and believing in oneself.* John Matthew can be reached on LinkedIn and through Nelo Health and I Press Forward LLC's websites. How to Develop A Committed Life As a SuperpowerMLK preached that one's goal should be to maximize service to others. He called that a “committed life.” Having given his life in pursuit of that ideal, subsequent generations–including JohnMatthew–have been influenced by his commitment to walking his preaching. In our conversation, JohnMatthew shared an anecdote to illustrate the power of leaning into a commitment to serving others. He recounts founding the mentorship program "I Press Forward" in 2012 at the behest of a public school teacher. Focused on rescuing middle school boys from troubled paths, the program was inspired by the challenges of crime, single-parent households, and poor attendance. The program's foundation rested on imparting soft skills, resilience, and leadership to students. A pivotal moment came when retired Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite engaged with the program, sharing his experiences of meeting presidents and emphasizing that anyone, regardless of circumstances, can succeed in the United States.Over four impactful years, the program enhanced students' attendance, behavior, and academic performance, transcending the confines of their neighborhoods.By following JohnMatthew's example, you can make a committed life a strength that defines you, too. In so doing, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJohnMatthew Douglas (he/him):Biographical Information: John Matthew Douglas (JohnMatthew), with nearly two- and one-half decades of diverse healthcare industry experience, tireless work in social determinants of health (SDoH) offers perspective many may have not considered. Laurie Rosenwald is an author, designer, painter, and educator whose impressive body of work encapsulates her vivacious, outspoken, and colorful personality. Her most recent book, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose, which was the subject of her TEDx Talk and is accompanied by a touring workshop of the same name, gives readers and audiences insight into the beautiful world of creating through intentional acts of randomness - a way of working that helps individuals get unstuck and discover new skill sets. The workshop has been conducted for major businesses and brands like Google, Starbucks, Scholastic, Buzzfeed, and Johnson & Johnson, to name a few.  Here's what we covered on the episode:   How Laurie Got Her Creative Start Laurie describes her childhood and shares that she has been drawing since 3 years old and has never stopped   The mindset Laurie has always had of what mattered was art and creativity - she has never focused on business or making money which has allowed her to be freer than others The first paid project Laurie had was an illustration for a small editorial in the back of the New York Times Most people choose to do one thing and stick with it, but Laurie shares that she's always done graphic design, illustration, painting, and writing because she gets bored easily when she sticks to just one thing    Laurie always did freelance illustration but also worked with many different magazines and newspapers doing layout design, graphic design, and editorial design The story of how Laurie got the job at the New York Times Magazine by lying about her skills, but because they liked her, they taught her how to do her job After working for the New York Times Magazine, Laurie worked for Condé Nast, where she worked on the first issues of Self Magazine and Vanity Fair Magazine, plus so many other projects One of Laurie's favorite projects was working on a Bloomingdale's shopping bag in 1981, which they, unfortunately took her name off of because she wasn't famous Laurie has lived off and on in Sweden for many years and shares that she worked on products for the Swedish post office In the late 80s, Laurie worked on an album cover for Joe Jackson More recently, the most exciting things for Laurie to do are her own books because she gets to express herself and have the freedom to do whatever she wants The story of how Laurie created her own typeface called, Loupot, which is based on a logo she has always loved  Laurie started dabbling in animation while working with Nickelodeon and ended up doing an animated app with David Sedaris called David's Diary When it comes to awards, Laurie believes they don't really matter because there are so many awards, and no one ever asks to see them – she believes it shouldn't be what you focus on Making Mistakes on Purpose How, in the digital world, we've lost a bit of personalization, which Laurie believes is super important Laurie explains that her workshop, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose, is more about helping people do things they normally wouldn't and discover new things by sabotage because if you do the same thing over and over again because you've mastered a skill, you never discover anything new The point of Laurie's workshop is also to take the focus off doing one good thing and instead focus on creating as much as possible Laurie wants to combine what digital programs are good at and what human beings are good at and combine them Laurie shares a personal story about her life and how looking back, sometimes you think things are mistakes, but they aren't Because Laurie has done so many different things, her clients and projects are very diverse The most important thing to Laurie is to keep creating, and if people find her, that's great, but she's not making it a priority for her work to be known All of Laurie's books are a combination of humor and design because she wants to entertain people How Laurie feels that her books, How to Make Mistakes on Purpose and All the Wrong People Have Self-esteem are misunderstood as self-help books Laurie is excited about a memoir she's working on called, Memwah and is currently looking for the right agent, editor, and publisher and explains why she doesn't want to self-publish One thing Laurie wants to continue to do is bigger and better workshops – she shares that she's done them for brands like Google and Starbucks A goal of Laurie's is to find great companies and venues to experience How to Make Mistakes on Purpose The more digital the world gets, the more perfect the world gets, but Laurie says there's a problem with that, and we need to bring back the random and chaos to get somewhere new Reach out and connect with Laurie on Instagram, Twitter and check out her website to learn more about her   Links mentioned: Links mentioned: How to Make Mistakes on Purpose Book How to Make Mistakes on Purpose Workshop Laurie's 2019 Invisible Talk: How to Make Mistakes on Purpose Connect with Laurie on Instagram  Connect with Laurie on Twitter  Visit Laurie's Website Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. In late 2019, as part of Blackstone Group purchase of Magic Lab, the umbrella company that owned both Bumble and Chappy, Chappy's user base merged with Bumble's under a single, more inclusive app. Sam stayed on as LGBTQ advisor to Bumble to ensure a thoughtful and strategic transition, while setting his sights on his next startup. After years heading Vera Wang's global licensing business, he left to gain a greater understanding of consumer insights and market research, and how they could best be used to drive growth strategy. He served as a Director at Kantar, then a part of the WPP family, working with luxury, lifestyle and retail brands to develop their marketing strategies. His clients included Tiffany, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Estee Lauder, L'oreal and Michael Kors.   Learning from his past professional experience, Lyle saw an opportunity to reinvigorate the dusty tabletop space, a category in which the customer experience hadn't changed in decades. By developing a deeper understanding of today's consumer and their modern mindset, Lyle is excited to build Leeway into a brand that seeks to understand the consumer and what they want.   About Sam: An influencer in his own right, Sam Dumas began his career at Vanity Fair Magazine, climbing the ranks in a few short years to become the experiential lead for the magazine's top events & initiatives.   In January of 2018, Sam was tapped by Bumble CEO & Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd to become Co-Founder and Head of Brand of Chappy, Bumble's Gay Dating app. Sam built Chappy into a strong stand-alone brand that helped re-define digital dating amongst gay men. As an avid consumer of the homewares category, and armed with the passion ignited by his previous roles with brand building, he set his sights on building the next experience-led, consumer driven lifestyle brand that addresses the needs of the home customer.   About Leeway Home: Leeway Home is a direct-to-consumer homewares brand rewriting the rules of home, starting with all-in-one kits to set your table. We combine ceramics, glassware and flatware into simple boxes, thoughtfully designed for you and how you live. Author Mark Seal joins Tim to talk with Mark about the subject of his popular new book about the making of The Godfather movie. The book is called, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Mark has is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair where he's covered scandals, history makers and pop culture icons. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/The_Making_of_The_Godfather_auphonic.mp3 The Godfather was the first of three motion pictures directed by Francis Ford Coppola about the fictional Corleone crime family. Multi-faceted artist Barbara Colaciello began her career working with Andy Warhol for six years at the Factory in NYC as the Advertising Director of Interview Magazine."Warhol actually pursued me for over two years. I was an actress with a BFA from Rider University working as a saleswoman at the Yves St Laurent boutique. I didn't know anything about publishing. But Andy loved talkers. And I was funny."  - Barbara ColacielloWhile selling advertising for the Pope of Pop, Barbara continued to pursue her passion for acting and studied at Warren Robertson’s studio in NYC with acclaimed acting coach Larry Moss, and with  director Peter Flood at the Real Stage. After her Warhol years, Barbara worked with her brother, Vanity Fair Magazine writer Bob Colacello, for 10 years. She managed his many projects and acted as lead researcher/interviewer for his book, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close-Up.In 1993, Barbara's husband was offered a job in Jacksonville, FL. Barbara did not want to leave her family (built-in babysitters), her friends, and fabulous job. "I'll give it a year." Barbara moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida with her husband and two sons. Sensing a lack of culture in her golf and tennis-oriented beach community, she founded an acting program in her home called Inter-Act. It specialized in improvisation. Her desire to connect to community through the arts, led Barbara to host soirées at her home, inviting friends to experience innovative work by poets, dancers, musicians, and visual artists. These popular artistic evenings became the catalyst for Barbara's work for the next 20 years.  In 2005, she accepted the position as Education and Outreach Director of Players by the Sea Theater in Jacksonville Beach.Barbara has collaborated extensively with poet, playwright, and award-winning NPR radio host, Al Letson, as his acting coach and director/producer of many of his plays. It received rave reviews.Barbara's original one-woman show, Life on the Diagonal, had its NYC debut at Theater Lab in April of 2008. I'm so happy to know Barbara Colaciello, and happy to live on the diagonal.”  ~ Daniel Austin, actor, director, educatorLife  on the Diagonal celebrates life’s mysteries and imperfections with  humor, sexuality and a little A.D.D. madness. Seamlessly integrating  storytelling, and spoken word with her original music, Colaciello takes  her listeners on an intense, yet funny journey through an  experience-strewn landscape, into and beyond the “land of should”.In 2010, Players by the Sea and the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens commissioned Barbara to research, write, and perform a solo show about the museum's founder, Ninah May Holden Cummer for the museum's 50th anniversary.Barbara's company, Improv to the Rescue, housed at BABS'LAB, specializes in experiential and creative learning to enhance communication skills, develop storytellers and encourage collaboration through workshops, classes and performances.

We have no way of knowing how many days of grand living we’ll be gifted. We’ve certainly become inured to the reality that life discloses our experiences moment by moment in real-time and it is up to us to determine how we choose to finesse all the “whatisness” life brings our way. In this authentically captivating episode of Aging GreatFULLy, we welcome the founding editor of Creative Nonfiction magazine, and architect of the genre, Lee Gutkind, author and editor of more than thirty books. He’s appeared on many national radio and television shows, including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. Even before Lee Gutkind was spotlighted in Vanity Fair Magazine in 1997 as “the Godfather behind creative nonfiction” he was its most active advocate and practitioner. In 1991, he founded Creative Nonfiction, the first and the largest literary journal to publish narrative/creative nonfiction exclusively. All the while, Gutkind continued to practice what he preached, immersing himself in diverse worlds for months and years and producing dramatic and intimate creative nonfiction books about subjects as rich and varied as the motorcycle subculture, child and adolescent mental illness, baseball umpires, veterinary medicine and organ transplantation. However, his latest writing endeavor wasn’t looking outward into the lives of others, but instead inward, towards his very own. Undertaking perhaps his most difficult and challenging work to date, Gutkind took to the task of writing his own memoir, My Last Eight Thousand Days: An American Male in His Seventies. In his revealing, candid and vivid portrait of aging, Gutkind examines aging like we’ve never seen before. And while the words on the pages are his experiences, thoughts and stories, having read them, I feel they may relate in some way to to every listener, as Gutkind has managed to unearth the truth on aging like only he can. A must-listen, wisdom-infused episode that is full of fun, because isn’t that what life is about? But we also shift our attention to some topics that are important and serious that need our attention too. And Gutkind shares candidly the challenges he faced in growing older, including making connections, making meaning of it all, and what he did to find his way to the many better todays and wonderful tomorrows to come. This is definitely a power-hour of enlightYOUment that delivers on so many levels you won’t want to miss! Gutkind’s memoir is a fantastic read for everyone that I highly recommend—to get your copy of My Last Eight Thousand Days: An American Male in His Seventies, or to learn more about or connect with Lee Gutkind visit www.LeeGutkind.com. This type of down and dirty pseudo-journalism was extremely common in the 90 - just think Lorena Bobbitt, Tanya Harding, Heidi Fleiss, Hugh Grant, George Michael and Peewee Herman. The Amy Fisher story was no exception. Kathy speaks to David Kamp, a contributing editor for Vanity Fair Magazine, who wrote about the phenomenon in 1999 and dubbed the 90s: ‘The Tabloid Decade.' On the second episode, Kathy looks at how the Lion King animated film from 1994 and how the movie was the ultimate underdog...or undercat? The episode discusses how the studio never really believed in the movie's success but it still managed to overcome incredible adversity to evolve into the worldwide cultural phenomenon it is today. On this episode Host Kathy Kenzora is looking back at how tabloid media had a feeding frenzy on the Long Island Lolita.  In May 1992, a high school senior on Long Island, New York, went to the home of her much older ex-lover and shot his wife in the face.  17 year old Amy Fisher had been having an affair with 37 year old Joey Buttafuco for 18 months and was angry that he wanted to end the relationship.  Within days, Amy was dubbed “The Long Island Lolita” and the story exploded in the media around the country.  Amy and the Buttafuco’s became household names overnight and tabloid newspapers and TV shows scrambled to dig up dirt on anyone involved with the story.  This type of down and dirty pseudo-journalism was extremely common in the 90s, just think Lorena Bobbitt, Tanya Harding, Heidi Fleiss, Hugh Grant, George Michael and Peewee Herman.  David Kamp, a contributing editor for Vanity Fair Magazine, wrote about the phenomenon in 1999 and dubbed the 90s the Tabloid Decade. Kamp, explains in this episode that the coverage of tabloid stories in the 90s was weirdly out of proportion thanks in part to the popularity of tabloid TV shows like A Current Affair, Hard Copy and Inside Edition.  If you enjoy the History of the 90s, please take a minute to rate it on Apple Podcasts or Google Podcasts, tell us what you think and share it with your friends. In conjunction with Spencer Drate & Judith Salavetz, The Ward- Nasse Gallery located in Soho, NYC, is proud to present an exhibition of the amazing work by American artist Xany Rudoff. Xany Rudoff is a Los Angeles-based artist who has been working as a professional painter for the past ten years. Trained at one of the most prestigious fine art programs in the country,UCLA, Rudoff has been featured in many notable publications including Vanity Fair Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, The LA Weekly, & most recently, featured in a six page spread in the cutting edge London Art publication, Cock No.7, for their "Dreams" & "Vinyl" themed issues. May 4, 2013 The Ward- Nasse Gallery located in Soho, NYC is proud to present an exhibition of artist Xany Rudoff "Iconic Illuminating Album Cover Paintings" will be Xany's first solo show in New York City. Her current work, the “Icon Series”, features vintage album covers that have been painted and embellished using 24 carat gold leafing Renaissance and Byzantine era techniques to affect the look of religious icon paintings. In these works, Xany explores the idea of the iconic by using found albums such as David Bowie's, Aladdin Sane” and Led Zeppelin's, Houses Of The Holy” amongst many others, and applies gold leaf to the album's surface, followed by extensive burnishing, painting and lacquering techniques in the same time honored tradition of the Old Masters. She transforms the covers into beautiful, luminescent "Icons" that reflect the modern day "worship" of classic albums & musicians of today. The result is a breathtaking series of work that glow with the burnished luster of a church fresco, but are intimate and personal in size and image. Rock and roll icons are made magnificent in a work that is at once transcendent and familiar and take the ordinary into the extraordinary.http://www.xanyart.com/
