Music isn't about life or death. It's much more important than that

Obsessive. Demanding of attention. Acclaimed. No, we're not talking about ourselves for a change, it's the bands that earn just that little bit extra devotion - the cult bands. This episode: Bill has been worshiping at the alter of dark industrial techno in the cathedral of Vatican Shadow, as Clint bonds with his child to the sounds of Rex Orange County. After casting off all pretense of objectivity, Bill denies joining the KISS army after seeing a cover band at the age of 12; states he would be willing to part with cash for a Radiohead album of flatulence, while diving off into a detailed history of the finer parts of Detroit electronica. Hooray, Mr Bungle FINALLY make a playlist. Clint reveals a knowledge of Sydney proto-punk music that appears unnatural for someone who was in Perth as a child at the time; discloses he probably ended up buying two thirds of the total albums MC 900 ft. Jesus sold in Australia, and yet still can't get himself in to the blues. By the end of his list, Mick Thomas has now officially been mentioned more often on the podcast than Courtney Barnett. All hail the new king! Finally, after whipping out the fan club membership cards, Kim Gordon does Kim Gordon things on her debut album, and The Darkness keep cock-rock alive.

Shock World Service 084: Lake TranquillizeR by Der Opium Queen 9/4/2019 Berlin, Germany 1. June11 - White Bird It can be hard to select an opening track sometimes, but the opening mantra of loosening up and beginning to float, up and away from our bodies is a good place to start. Released on the ever great treasure chest of Stroom Records out of Belgium. 2. Jura Soundsyem - The Latern Song A whimsical floatation device from the great Isle of Jura label, they do great work for reissuing oddball of disco-not-disco and baleiric treats. Those spaced out trumpets in the background clears the path for the dubbed out, weird and wonderful. The label first came to attention for me for their reissue of the classic Fire in My Heart, by Escape from New York, my friend let us stay up in his attic a few years back after a night out and we listened to a wild mix called Andy Blake Rocks the Boat, great times, I think even the Beegees were in that mix. 3. Black Merlin - Standing At The Summit Of Bosavi Black Merlin for me has been a staple in my mixes for some time. His penchant for tough electronics is complemented and contrasted by his immersive soundscape experiments. The key feature of these experiments is the dank soaking atmosphere of his exotic field records, where the synthesized elements are full of raw transcendental power. Combined with loosely geographical field records, you have a great meeting of document and fantasy, which i find interesting and sounds just great. This track is taken from his latest LP which is collected from field recordings surrounding the Kosua tribe of Papa New Guinea. 4. Aponogeton - The Night Sky is Falling (Sixth Seal) Another track from the Stroom camp, this time its a highly dense 3D ambient piece with high emotional content that swirls in and out of focus, not much else to say about this one, but sit back and enjoy it. 5. DJ healer - Get away The artist behind DJ Healer, and the countless other monikers that came before really is a true auteur. With so many different genres and it can be hard to know what exactly the expression of his style is, as its always evolving, changing. For me what it all has in common is his ability to make the small details really interesting, without necessarily using detail, its just a hard hitting effect, like he can get his point across with relatively formulaic formats (House, Techno and so forth) I guess he can put his stamp on effortlessly what has been produced over and over for years, and make it fresh! 6. Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Bridgetown Dub If Black Merlin's Kosua, mentioned previously, profiles real geographical landscapes and twists it into a full colour psychedelia, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement aka Vatican Shadow has been carving a deep jungle soundspace that is entirely his own for a good few years now. For me this is a project that can really take you there, while Kosua acts as a warped quasi document of the real world exotica, RSE is not stuck to the limitations of the real world, allowing for some seriously dark and mind bending ideas to bloom. Reggae-dub in the humid depths of the jungle, why the hell not. This track comes from the 2 track Venus Flytrap Exotica. 7. OSSIA - Radiation Nice zone out here, accidentally pushed further into the extremity by the help of my turntables on33, 45 RPM function, this was actually accidental, but the slo mo skank out that occurred as a result melted my brain and stole my heart. blissed out in a dub hell. Notes end.

Swede Peder Mannerfelt makes music that is hard to categorise. And whether producing for Fever Ray and Blonde Redhead or serving up albums and EPs on Archives Intérieures and Hinge Finger, he is fiercely inventive. From experimental tribal concept music like his The Swedish Congo Record to the disassembled and goth-tinged techno rhythms of his latest, Controlling Body, he always pushes boundaries in bold new ways. He is an artist who likes to forget what he knows and go with his instincts, and it has resulted in a body or work that is truly beguiling. His mix for our series is just as esoteric. It is a two hour collage that starts of as a voodooistic brew of shamanistic rituals, abstract noise and kinked techno that takes you to a dark foreign world. From there there are some more traditional passages of drum rhythms and wild machine-made sounds as well as diversions into plenty more uncategorizable sonic spheres thanks to tracks from the likes of Pinch, Errorsmith, Vatican Shadow, Machine Woman, Umfang and tens more. It’s music as warfare, as cinema, as experimentation, and it sounds like nothing else out there.

Many thanks to WLDERZ for their mix, it was a truly a wonderful addition to the Drone Podcast series! For our next podcast, we are traveling back to Italy. Influenced by Vatican Shadow and Rrose this tremendous talented DJ and producer started in 2011 releasing his first tracks. It was not long after that he released a 10 track album ’’Dreamlike Flow’’ on DJ Emerson’s Micro.fon label which was described as ’’Exciting quality and roughness showcasing his skills as a producer. The dark deepness of all these cuts makes this a significantly unique piece where all the tracks interact with each other. Cutting edge industrial sounds meet spheric dubbed-out chords and sequences’’. And got early support from Ben Sims, Rebekah, Monoloc, Conrad van Orton, Giorgio Gigli and many more. We definitely recommend you check it if you didn’t do it already: https://www.beatport.com/release/dreamlike-flow/1262250And since that time he has been releasing on powerhouse labels like Gobsmacked, Black Reel, Sonntag Morgen, Wunderblock Records and Nachtstrom Schallplatten. Recently he put out his latest EP ’’Sogno Condiviso’’ on Dynamic reflection.Without a doubt, we are honored to have him on Drone Podcast No. 077: Mas Teevah Please Enjoy!

Canciones retorcidas y vocación poética a cargo del gallego Don the Tiger.

. Ambient dub, minimal dub, ambi-dub, whatever you want to call it, is something that I listen to every now & then.  I like making mixes with this music because the tracks flow so well together. I've done three previous dub mixes and while they are all laid back, this one may be more so.  It collects some dubby cuts & weaves in some noise & washes of field recordings from the fantastic ambi-dub recording, "DeepChord presents Echospace - Liumin."  The bonus cd for that album is all the field recordings that were the source material for the tracks on the other disc. Not all the cuts are straight up dub tracks, but they do all fit together nicely.  Almost all the tracks are new with the exception of the krill.minima & Plastikman tunes. Enjoy.
