Interview by Ali WilliamsHOKKA are not easing their way into their new release. They are kicking the door off the hinges, draping the room in red capes and dark mythology, then having the nerve to make it all look effortless. Speaking with HEAVY, Joel Hokka comes across as the kind of frontman who has already lived enough band life to know exactly what matters and exactly what doesn't. There is no wide-eyed “we just got lucky” routine here. HOKKA might be new on paper, but this is not a band fumbling around in the dark hoping to strike a chord. This is the sound of seasoned musicians taking the scenic route through chaos and somehow arriving with a debut album, a label, festival slots and a clear creative identity before most bands have even agreed on a decent group photo. The origin story is almost insultingly efficient. After Joel's split from Blind Channel, he linked up with Pauli, formerly from The Rasmus with both men bringing years of Finnish rock pedigree and enough experience to avoid wasting time pretending the business side of music is some mystical accident. What began as informal sessions and song ideas quickly snowballed into a real band, real momentum and a debut release in MiSERIA IV. That sort of rise would be nauseating if it did not also make perfect sense. When two people with history, hunger and unfinished business get in a room together, things tend to move.And that unfinished business matters. One of the more entertaining truths to emerge from the chat is that HOKKA's creative engine is not powered by incense, deep breathing and trust falls. It is powered, at least in part, by revenge. Joel says it plainly, with the kind of grin you can almost hear through the transcript: revenge is a fantastic motivator. It is a wonderfully unpretentious admission, and honestly, a refreshing one. Rock music has always done some of its best work when someone is at least a little bit annoyed. In this sun-drenched, laugh-out-loud podcast throwdown, HEAVY's Ali Williams checks in with Anberlin's resident rhythm wizard, Nate Young—straight from muggy Florida to the Gold Coast—about their upcoming Aussie invasion, a band that keeps dodging retirement like it's a game of whack-a-mole, and why their passports deserve a spot in the ARIA Hall of Fame. Anberlin are rolling in with a brand-new frontman, a rebooted classic album, and a fan base that's as loyal (and occasionally unhinged) as a Queensland summer. With headline shows locked in, for An Emo Extravaganza presented by Destroy All Lines, Anberlin aren't just making another comeback—they're turning it into an art form. It's official: Anberlin is heading back to Oz in February 2026, and if anyone knows how to party like it's 2005, it's these guys. After re-recording the album with Matty's pipes - “just to give fans a way to hear what these songs are going to sound like with him singing” - Nate admits the switch wasn't exactly easy street—“switching out a singer is not easy and usually just doesn't work… but we're thankful fans seem to be cool with it.” And if any hardcore purists complain? Well, that's just part of being a band with a pulse. Mullins isn't just a newbie, either—he grew up a genuine Anberlin fan. Nate grins, “He's an absolutely ripping singer and just a good frontman, really positive energy for us.” The new era isn't just a reboot—it's evolution, and for Anberlin it's proof you can keep relevant by daring to change (instead of fading into permanent hiatus, or, worse, nostalgia-bloated obscurity). The pair get real about age, confidence, and what it means to be an “alternative rock” band in a post-genre world. For Nate, growing up in the spotlight since he was 14 means he's learned not to sweat the small stuff (or the labels). “Time is a construct,” he deadpans, “so none of it matters.” Emo, alt-rock, post-hardcore—whatever you call it, Anberlin's brand of high-octane anthems and gratitude-fuelled stage presence hasn't aged a day. From message boards to TikTok, Nate reflects on the perks (and weirdness) of being able to actually connect with fans now—sometimes for better, sometimes for audacity that's usually… for sure, or respectfully if you will. Still, he wouldn't trade the chaos of social media for the pre-Internet “mystique” of old: “It's given us a connection with our fans that's really special.” Anberlin are back in Australia in February 2026, headlining shows in the main capitals, a big set at Froth and Fury Festival, and an all-new take on Never Take Friendship Personal that'll remind you why this band has lasted the distance. With the Bad Dads on the brink of implosion and Dan utterly oblivious the best way to lighten up the mood is for a quick trip to that happiest of places: the graveyard. Not for sex but for the Top 5 Movie Graves and whilst it might seem a bit gruesome at first we hope we manage to generate as many laughs as we do tears. Which is to say, probably none of either.I,TONYA is a movie that we had all wanted to see but somehow managed to skip, making this 2017 biographical drama of infamous tabloid villainess Tonya Harding perfect fodder for a podcast where people catch up on movies they missed for various reasons. Abused by the people who are supposed to love and protect her and ostracised from the snobbish figure skating elite, Margot Robbie shines as the lead supported brilliantly by Allison Janney as Harding's mother LaVona and The Winter Soldier Sebastian Stan as her nasty husband Jeff. Adding nuance and comedy to an otherwise ignominious tale, director Craig Gillespie uses invention and wit to bring this story to life.Oh god, another Netflix tween soap opera. This one revolves around 15 year old figure skater (behold the effort we put into this) Kayla, whose family moved from Canada to England to play ice skating for West Ham or something. This one received surprisingly mixed reviews, with some of the dads enjoying the mystery surrounding the enigmatic player number 67 who joins Kayla for a nighttime slip and slide and other dads lamenting the torturous high school angst, hideous sense of entitlement and 34 minute running time of this bland series opener.
