Canine Health Foundation Celebrates 30 years Stephanie Montgomery, CEO of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, joins host Laura Reeves to catch up on what the powerful non-profit has done and continues to do for all dogs. Montgomery, an Airedale fancier, joined CHF as the CEO in 2023, but “I was able to kind of blend my passion for science and dogs and started volunteering for the Canine Health Foundation as a scientific reviewer. And then I always say I'm a failed volunteer because now I'm working here. “We are celebrating our 30th year anniversary this year, founded in 1995. And what I was so impressed by was that folks had this vision. So what we do is we fundraise, right? And we distribute that money. To fund the best research that will advance the health of all dogs. So we do that through awarding grants to researchers that tend to be at veterinary schools. And when we evaluate those grants, we wanna find the most cutting-edge research that's going to have the biggest impact on dogs, and that's what we've done for 30 years. Canine Health Foundation helped fund the work conducted at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center that identified the canine genome. This is the basis for all ensuing DNA testing since 2004. “Prior to 1995 when CHF started, there was no dog genome,” Montgomery said. “The human genome had only been completed two years prior and it was pivotal. It changed the way that we could look at genetic testing and evolution of dogs and develop tools in veterinary medicine. CHF's contribution to ground breaking science continues to this day with research at hundreds of Universities, including studies into mitral valve disease that impacts millions of dogs. “I'm so happy to see the work being done because mitral valve disease is so common in all of the dogs,” Montgomery noted. “I'm a pathologist and the number of older dogs that don't have some mitral valve disease is really next to none. They all have it and we understand so little about it, even though it's so common. And so I'm so excited that we have new studies going that help us understand the physiology of how this disease develops. It will help us identify targets for future therapies. We also have studies on how to best diagnose and monitor progression so maybe we can make a difference and impact all these dogs that have mitral valve disease.”

This week we read “Initiation: Sex Wizards, Book 1”by Alethea Faust Magic is a rare gift that only exists in the bloodlines of the rich, the royal, and the reputable. Dominai of Airedale, a poor hunter and forest guide, is barely one of those things. But after a moonlit encounter with the wizard Allisande, Dominai's life is changed forever. She reveals that Dominai has magic in his lineage and provides him with a letter of introduction to the Crux, the center of magical study in the Kingdom of Straetham. Magical study is a far cry from the dusty tomes and rituals Dom was expecting. Instead, it is sex and desire, submission and surrender, loyalty and love, and, above all, trust. But when the trust of the Crux is betrayed, Dom must face his own insecurities and the unknown to protect his new home and his fellow wizards. How did we rate it? What did we think? Leading the Way — Part 1: The History of Guide Dogs

Down and Back

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2023 27:46

In this podcast episode, we introduce you to a pivotal moment in the story of humans and canines, the training of guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired. Historical data suggests that throughout the millennia, dogs have been in service to humans. From a town square in Ancient China to the perilous battlefields of World War I, dogs have sacrificed their own needs and desires to care for, save, and guide us. Trainers spend months working diligently with guide dogs and their human partners in complex training exercises to prepare them for the tasks. It just may be that dogs are the only animal on earth that provide unconditional obedience paired with unconditional love.   Bonafide Bits: There are 2,100 guide dog teams across North America and 22,000 teams worldwide. A 13th-century Chinese scroll depicts a dog guiding a visually impaired person. Several breeds of dogs were trained to assist WW1 soldiers who were rendered sightless by poison gas. In 1927, Dorothy Harrison Eustis wrote The Seeing Eye, a Saturday Evening Post magazine article that introduced America to the concept of training dogs to guide the blind and visually impaired. In 1926, Minnesota Senator Thomas D. Schall introduced a bill that allowed guide dogs to accompany their humans on public transit and in restaurants, an early precursor to the public access rights given to guide dogs under the Americans With Disabilites act   Featured Breeds: Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever, an exuberant Scottish gundog of great beauty, stands among America's most popular dog breeds. They are serious workers at hunting and fieldwork, as guides for the blind, and in search-and-rescue, enjoy obedience and other competitive events, and have an endearing love of life when not at work. Discover more about Golden Retrievers at AKC's Golden Retriever Breed Biography.   Labrador Retriever The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. But don't mistake his easy-going personality for low energy: The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit. Discover more about Labrador Retrievers at AKC's Labrador Retriever Breed Biography.   German Shepherd Dog There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there's a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC's German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography.   Poodle Forget those old stereotypes of Poodles as sissy dogs. Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. The Standard, with his greater size and strength, is the best all-around athlete of the family, but all Poodles can be trained with great success. Discover more about Poodles at AKC's Poodle (Standard) Breed Biography.   Boxer Loyalty, affection, intelligence, work ethic, and good looks: Boxers are the whole doggy package. Bright and alert, sometimes silly, but always courageous, the Boxer has been among America's most popular dog breeds for a very long time. Discover more about Boxers at AKC's Boxer Breed Biography.   Doberman Pinscher Sleek and powerful, possessing both a magnificent physique and keen intelligence, the Doberman Pinscher is one of dogkind's noblemen. This incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world's finest protection dogs. Discover more about Doberman Pinschers at AKC's Doberman Pinscher Breed Biography.   Collie The majestic Collie, thanks to a hundred years as a pop-culture star, is among the world's most recognizable and beloved dog breeds. The full-coated “rough” Collie is the more familiar variety, but there is also a sleek “smooth” Collie. Discover more about Collies at AKC's Collie Breed Biography.   Pointer The noble Pointer is the ultimate expression of canine power and grace. Unquestioned aristocrats of the sporting world, Pointers carry themselves proudly and are capable of great speed and agility. The coat comes in several colors, solid or in patterns but as the breed's devotees like to say, a good Pointer can't be a bad color. A large male can stand 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 75 pounds; a small female might weigh as little as 45 pounds and stand 23 inches. Discover more about Pointers at AKC's Pointer Breed Biography.   Airedale Terrier His size, strength, and unflagging spirit have earned the Airedale Terrier the nickname “The King of Terriers.” The Airedale stands among the world's most versatile dog breeds and has distinguished himself as a hunter, athlete, and companion. Discover more about Airedale Terriers at AKC's Airedale Terrier Breed Biography.   Giant Schnauzer The Giant Schnauzer is a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer, and he should, as the breed standard says, be a “bold and valiant figure of a dog.” Great intelligence and loyalty make him a stellar worker and companion. Discover more about Giant Schnauzers at AKC's Giant Schnauzer Breed Biography.   Newfoundland The massive Newfoundland is a strikingly large, powerful working dog of heavy bone and dignified bearing. The sweet-tempered Newfie is a famously good companion and has earned a reputation as a patient and watchful “nanny dog” for kids. Discover more about Newfoundlands at AKC's Newfoundland Breed Biography.   Puli No other breed can be mistaken for the Puli, a compact but powerful herder covered from head to tail with profuse, naturally occurring cords. Bred to work closely with humans, these agile and faithful little dynamos are quick learners. First, there are those dreadlocks, the instantly recognizable feature of the Puli (pronounced "Poo-lee", "Pulik" is the plural). The coat's naturally occurring cords are wooly, dense, and weatherproof. Either corded or brushed out, Puli coats require lots of attention. Under the dreads there's a compact but powerful dog, standing 16 to 17 inches at the shoulder. Pulik are remarkably agile and light on their feet, earning a reputation as the “acrobat of the dog world.” Discover more about Pulick at AKC's Puli Breed Biography.   For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org.   Shareables: In 1843, Charles Dickens wrote of guide dogs in his classic “A Christmas Carol.” A freak cigar-lighting accident led Senator Thomas D. Schall to introduce a bill that is the basis of guide dog accessibility laws in place today. When her guide dog Emma began having vision problems, newly sighted Sheila Hocken switched roles to guide the Labrador Retriever during the final months of her dog's life.

Brandon Handley 0:00 What is going on spiritual dope? A number Have you probably already got this message probably already saw, some of you may have skimmed it and didn't finish it. I know that a meg, she might have, she might have finished reading it after I left she said she would. But uh, so here's the deal, I shot out an email. After this weekend, I had just gotten done reading a book titled, the tools, the tools is five tools to help you find courage, creativity, and willpower and inspire you to live life in forward motion. I honestly I don't even know why I have this book. I know that I picked it up because it was referenced in another book. And that's just kind of how I am I will be reading a book and somebody will reference some material and said book, and I'll go to Amazon, and I'll grab it because I trust that person's reference. Before we get to that, though, that really No, the other piece of this was I interviewed a guy named Jonathan Potter, he's going to be coming on at some point in the year, I've got a number of awesome podcasts that have already been recorded for your listening pleasure. And what one of the things that he had was this story. And I put this in an email. And the line really starts like this, the line says doesn't ask doesn't get right, Jonathan been working for one of the top five global consulting corporations in the world. And he was a nervous new consultant was working with his mentor, and the economy was a shitstorm. And he goes, they had, they had to put a presentation in front of their customer. And it was $20 million. It's like, Wow, that's pretty, that's pretty, pretty bold. Right? And his, his mentor says to him, says, hey, you know, don't ask, don't get, and they ended up winning this contract. Right? Even though and yes, and on top of on top of the economy, being shitty, and all these other things. They weren't even doing a good job at that point. And the situation that they were in, according to the story. So, you know, I've been thinking, I'd been thinking about making the email that I sent out yesterday, holy based on that story. And I just hadn't done it yet. hadn't done it yet. And so I had been reading the story was reading the book, the tools. And in the tools, the first tool that they have in there, that's called it is called the reversal of desire, then essentially, though, what is teaching you is that how often you stay in your comfort zone. I think that if you've been listening to this podcast, or if you've been in these circles, for any period of time, everybody talks about, you got to get out of your comfort zone. So you've got to get out of your comfort zone. Because there's there's no growth, really inside that comfort zone. If you stay in the comfort zone, you stay small. And you stay small, you don't you don't live the life that you truly desire. And oftentimes, you don't live the life that truly be fit you. And you're missing out on your opportunity to experience your own greatness. And I think that there's gonna there's a lot of turmoil when you whenever you say to people, talk to them about their greatness, Nate, they think that, you know, it means like superheroes, shit and some other stuff, but really just means to tap into your source inside of yourself and to, you know, kind of feel the thrill of living your life as it was intended. So they talk about, you know, living in your comfort zone, they talk about this pain wall. And they talk about the stories that we kind of make up or the things that we allow for ourselves to get into this pain wall, the sanding in between us. And everything that we truly kind of desire all of these limitless opportunities. And just made me think right just made me think about this notes. Maybe think about the email that I sent out this weekend that said, hey, doesn't ask us and get and also brought to mind of all the people that have been on the podcast, I've got several people that have been on the podcast immediately. Right after they write off they've been on no matter what they just start adding me to their email. They're right this time. I'm like, wow, I didn't I didn't even sign up to be on an email or I signed up so that you could tell your story on my blog. But okay, you know, so I'm often impressed with their boldness. Right? To be so bold to just add me to your list we just met bro. Right? And I talked an email about these other people that they sent me emails all of the target, some people email upwards of five times a day. And they're still on my list. I still haven't unsubscribed. And the reason for that is that I always feel like there's something in there, I can read from there, you know, like, I take something away from their emails, I'm like, wow, this person is pretty, pretty, pretty freakin bold. And they're gonna keep sending me emails, like, what are they selling? What are they? How are they selling? What kind of marketing are they using, so I, I enjoy that. But the truth of the matter is, is that I've been holding myself back and I hadn't been emailing, and I wasn't facing my own pains, I was living in my own small circle. And so I faced it. And using this tool called the reversal desire, you know, it leveraging kind of that pain as the motivator and as a driving force to get myself into this land of limitless opportunity. And they kind of remind you in the story that they're telling and the tool, that there's going to be pain in your life. And we're not talking about doing it on purpose so that you're always in pain and pain is growth. That's not it. There's no there's going to be some type of pain that is associated initially with a lot of things. And the thing that comes to my mind is in sales and rejection. Right? still afraid of rejection? I don't want to be rejected. I don't want to come across as like an idiot, you know? And that and I called myself out in my own email, and I said, You know what this is this is me. I was like, I was afraid of rejection. I was afraid like, maybe one person drops off the list. Well, maybe one person says, I'm not interested in what you're saying here. And I was like, that's, you know, that's me holding myself back. That's me being afraid. That's me. Not doing the work, whatever you whatever that is right. And so I did it. And a shout out this email. And it this is like a great weight lifted off of kind of facing your own fears. There is a great line from my girl, Florence Scovel Shinn, she has long since passed. And I'm looking at it up right now this he Florence Scovel, Shinn, Airedale, Airedale, it's a type of dog. Let's see if I can spell it correctly. She talks about for me, I walk boldly up to the line, I walk boldly up to the line on my pathway and find it as a friendly Airedale. And what she's saying there's this very same, really the similar thing that we're talking about, like this email, or, you know, sometimes, sometimes your pain or sometimes your, whatever it is that you're afraid of. It looks larger from further away for some reason. And the closer that you get to it closer that you get to your pain, the smaller it becomes. Right, you start you start getting rid of the stories and you just you begin to realize that there's an outcome that you're looking for there's and if you can get past it, you can leave it or you can drop it. Right, I finally, it's like all those open tabs. I finally shut it down. I shut down this tab that had been open for so long. I felt lighter because of it. And this with Florence Scovel Shinn is saying to when she talks about, you know, walking up to your line and walk up to a friendly Airedale, which is some type of dog. What. And I brought this, I brought all of this into the breathwork session that I did yesterday as well, working with the group that I've been working with, we've been working on, hey, what are you trying to create in your life? And what's stopping you from creating that and then pulling this tool into the prep work and leveraging it so super exciting, to be able to kind of put all these things that you're you're learning together? I know, that's what I've been doing. I've been pulling different modalities together, trying to assemble them in different ways, different tools for different people, and put it all together and you know, again, doesn't ask doesn't get so I sent out the email what was asking for? I was asking for people to go ahead and say, hey, if you've been checking out this podcast if you've been a part of this community, if you're a listener if you've been a guest I love it if you could go ahead and if you could leave a review I said, Hey, you know this guy, Rick, Rick, silence teaches Rick was on contemplation. He said, Hey, host ask powerful questions that made me seriously reflect on why I do what I do. This made the show very helpful for his community. Or perhaps you're a longtime listener, and you have 1000 wisdom and had some moments of inspiration. And feel like you're part of the community like my boy, Jeremy Todd of the positive side podcast. He says, Hey, I needed this podcast, I cannot believe I found this podcast, I've been looking for a podcast that is on a different level. This show gives me insight about life dreams, and what is my purpose? Thank you, Brandon, for this podcast. And so I set out how to do it, I can leave some of those links on this podcast as well. The kind of the key takeaways here, if you're listening, and you're still hanging out, is, you know, face some of your fears and face, face some of your pain and leverage that pain is the kind of catalyst and realize that that's just energy to write that's just energy shaped in the form of thinking, the way God I thought about wonderful entire wonder, Wonder Twin powers unite right in the shape of pain, energy in the shape of pain, and you can reshape and leverage that energy to help build you forward momentum to get yourself into the things that you actually want. And one of those things and oftentimes is asking the question, in the sales world, where I live, if you don't ask for the PEO, if you don't ask for that purchase order. If you don't ask for the sale, if I don't ask for these, then I might not get them. And whose fault is it then? Right? Whose fault is it then if somebody doesn't know what I'm asking for because I don't voice it, then that's all me. That's my own fear of letting things get in my own way of what I actually want. Because I am afraid and, you know, it doesn't have to be that way. And once you kind of get through that, again, there's just like, it's a tremendous that's your greatness you, you get in touch with your greatness. It might sound scary, but you get in touch with your greatness. You feel powerful, you feel liberated. And you feel like you can achieve so much more after you get past some of those. So hopefully that's helpful for you check out the links on this podcast. If you'd like to go leave some of your own reviews. Thank you for anybody who has been participating in the breathwork and has been having some just tremendous. It's been having a tremendous impact. I've got a couple of great breathwork facilitators lined up for you one of them will be Neeraj Naik of the creator of the summer breathwork. I've got getting I don't have Gittens last name in front of me but it's like Tom cough. Another amazing breathwork facilitator. He does breath work to work with trauma. And I've got a couple others lined up for you too guys. I know yours already kind of getting by had to stop and give this update. But we do have some awesome stuff lined up for you stick around. I will be doing an ongoing series on dogs. All kinds of them. Afador’s, Airedale’s, English springer spaniel’s, all they down the alphabet to Dorkie's and Yorki’s. Yup, that's right, there's a breed called a Dorkie. I haven’t heard of any breed starting with the letter Z, but who knows. By the time I get to the end of this series there just may be one. Keep in mind that I am not a doctor or veterinarian, nor do I work in the pet industry nor am I associated with any animal organizations. Other than I do foster dogs on occasion. I just love dogs and have had dogs for almost my entire life. Oh, if you are looking to adopt a dog or pet, please support and adopt from reputable organizations and do your best not to shop online at any of those.. well, you know where I'm going with this. It's just that there are so many great pet adoption organization's with awesome pets. There are even specific breed adoption centers too. Also, consider an adult and even a senior dog when looking they need your love. In fact the dogs and cats will be so grateful and they'll bring you a lot of joy and love. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chucktuck/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chucktuck/support

In this podcast episode, we tour a couple of centuries of presidential dogs, the canine confidants of our Commanders-in-Chief. America truly is the land of opportunity. Just ask the lucky dogs who went from rags to riches solely from being in the right place, on the side of the road, at the right time. Dogs have been a welcome presence in the White House since the time of George Washington. For an in-person tour through Presidential pups, visit the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York. The Museum’s Presidential Dogs exhibit opens to the public on September 8, 2020. Bonafide Bits: George Washington was a dog lover and a serious breeder Warren G. Harding’s Airedale Terrier, Laddie Boy, was featured in thousands of press stories Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Scottish Terrier, Fala, was mentioned in the President’s speech to labor leaders George H. W. Bush’s English Springer Spaniel, Millie, became a best-selling author Barack Obama gifted his daughters a Portuguese Water Dog puppy after winning the Presidential election Featured Breeds: American Foxhound American Foxhounds are good-natured, low-maintenance hounds who get on well with kids, dogs, even cats, but come with special considerations for prospective owners. They are closely associated with Revolutionary heroes and the rolling estates of old Virginia. Discover more about American Foxhounds at AKC’s American Foxhound Breed Biography. Briard The Briard packs so much loyalty, love, and spirit into its ample frame that it’s often described as a "heart wrapped in fur." The dashing good looks of these muscular Frenchmen radiate a distinct aura of Gallic romance and elegance. Discover more about Briards at AKC’s Briard Breed Biography. Airedale Terrier His size, strength, and unflagging spirit have earned the Airedale Terrier the nickname “The King of Terriers.” The Airedale stands among the world’s most versatile dog breeds and has distinguished himself as a hunter, athlete, and companion. Discover more about Airedale Terriers at AKC’s Airedale Terrier Breed Biography. Bullmastiffs are the result of Bulldog and Mastiff crosses. Discover more about Bullmastiffs at AKC’s Bullmastiff Breed Biography. Irish Setter The Irish Setter is a high-spirited gundog known for grace, swiftness, and a flashy red coat. Discover more about Irish Setters at AKC’s Irish Setter Breed Biography. English Setter The English Setter is a medium-sized sporting dog of sweet temper and show-stopping good looks. It is one of the AKC’s four British setters created to work on the distinctly different terrains of England, Ireland, and Scotland. Discover more about English Setters at AKC’s English Setter Breed Biography. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there’s a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC’s German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography. Great Dane The easygoing Great Dane, the mighty “Apollo of Dogs,” is a total joy to live with—but owning a dog of such imposing size, weight, and strength is a commitment not to be entered into lightly. This breed is indeed great, but not a Dane. Discover more about Great Danes at AKC’s Great Dane Breed Biography. My favourite part of my job is that it feels like I treat friends all day long. I love to hear about your families, workout routines, new challenges you are facing at work, trips you are planning, and activities you are participating in. I enjoy treating patients of all ages, and hearing the giggles of children after getting adjusted, working with a pregnant mom and then meeting her new baby, and listening to the stories of my “snow birds” who have returned from a winter of golfing down South. Knowing how important chiropractic care is to my health, I continue to be adjusted every week, so I can continue to play competitive water polo, keep up with my very active dog (Wattson, an Airedale), golf, learn how to play hockey, take time out to relax and enjoy my husband’s company, and function at my best. When I’m not at the office or the pool, I volunteer with Rotary International, working directly with international youth exchange students, helping them learn our Canadian culture, and appreciate all that Canada has to offer. For those patients who speak French, I am also bilingual, and would really appreciate being able to practice my French, so please challenge me to do so! Thank you so much for your interest in this show of Exploring Mind and Body, if you haven’t done so already please take a moment and leave a quick rating and review of the show in iTunes by clicking below. Pam Bruce: Memories and the Essence of Style in Purebred Dogs Pam Bruce and Michael Canalizo get groovy at Woofstock. Pam Bruce, fourth generation Canadian dog fancier, joins host Laura Reeves in part one of a wide-ranging very personal interview on history, people, judging, breeding and the essence of “style” in purebred dogs. The quintessential dog person, Bruce shares stories and humor and insight reminiscing about the legends of the sport – Michelle Billings, Jane Forsyth, Anne Rogers Clark, Michael Canalizo, Ginny Lyne, Dick Meen and many more. Bruce finished her first dog, a Maltese, at four years old. Her family owned Maltese and later Lhasas. Perhaps best known for her association with Canalizo and thehttps://puredogtalk.com/canalizo-ghosts-of-the-past-and-breeding-for-the-future-pure-dog-talk/ ( Grandeur Afghans), Bruce breeds Airedales today. Bruce and Canalizo in competition with Ch. Tryst of Grandeur and Ch. Yours Truly of Grandeur. Allowed to Brush In a lifetime of “doing hair,” both brushing and hand stripping, she finds that the two coat types develop balance. “You brush away and pull towards, so the actions balance each other out.” Steeped in the tradition of learning from the ground up, Bruce talks about the tasks that she was “allowed” to do as a young girl. Generational standing gave her no “out” on the grunt work. Being trusted with tasks like cleaning pens and brushing dogs was an “earned” privilege. Being the first person at the dog show was a badge of honor, Bruce noted. Describing her work day as an assistant with one particular handler, she would have all toy dogs bathed before 8 am, dry them in order of their ring time and then work through the bath and blowout of the poodles, Afghan and Lhasa. Pam Bruce showing Ch. Yours Truly of Grandeur to Best in Show. Bruce describes the origin of her understanding of focus, being meticulous, and taking care of the dogs first. “One thing I learned,” Bruce said. “I don’t remember a bad word being said about anyone or their dogs. Everybody has a talent and something to bring to the table. You should never ever speak of anyone poorly because together we make up what is this passion for all of us, which is this sport.” Teamwork to keep breeding dogs As one of the few remaining active connections to the days of big kennels, Bruce continues to emphasize dog shows as an evaluation of breeding stock. “Those big working kennels had numbers,” Bruce said, “but that afforded us the ability to learn the quality (of the dogs).” Pam Bruce with her homebred Airedale. Lacking those facilities in today’s society, Bruce said teamwork picks up the slack. Sharing in a network of other Airedale breeders, “I can go back to the people working with me and get what I need.” “Breeding is about the artform, the intrinsic qualities of the breeds,” Bruce said. “The best indicator of what you’re going to get is what you’ve had. Quality begets quality. You need to have foresight. I’m always breeding three generations ahead.” Support this podcast

To commemorate St. Patrick's Day Laurie lists dog breeds, and the Manx cat, that originated in Ireland. Laurie discussed problems people have with leash manners and some ideas to control it. A caller had a question about an Airedale that had some issues at a boarding kennel. A woman was concerned that her poodle ate dirt. Laurie remembered a business call she received years ago from a woman whose Rottweiler was chewing the extension phone while she was trying to talk. Criticism was cast on how training is represented on TV. Finally the question was raised "do dogs outgrow doggie day care and are some dogs just not suited for it"?
