Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, April 8, 2024 A major investment by NOAA paves way for advancements at the I-79 High Tech Park. Founders of the WV Satellite Center discuss shooting for the stars. Get muddy as Tucker County springs to life…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – The West Virginia High Technology Foundation has a number of projects in the works to help support its partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Foundation President and CEO Jim Estep hopes these projects will help accelerate the foundation and its I-79 Technology Park to the next level. The park currently houses more than 30 company tenants and an estimated workforce of over 1,200, many of whom work at organizations like NASA, Mon Health and NOAA. NOAA is planning a $300 million infrastructure expansion in the park, which is expected to triple their capacity to support high-performance computing systems like supercomputers. Part of the expansion will take it into the I-79 Technology Park's “Phase III” development, an area of the park the foundation has been working to provide access to and make ready for companies and agencies to set up shop, Estep said. He added that NOAA is set to sign a new 17-year lease for the remaining available space in the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center, a building in which NOAA has invested over $200 million since 2010. “The lease will create enormous stability for the High Tech Foundation for a long time,” Estep said. “The infrastructure investment is going to position us to bring in more of the major programs that have major contracting associated with them. ... I haven't been this excited about where we're going in a long time.” Read more: https://www.wvnews.com/high-technology-foundation-strengthens-partnership-with-noaa-for-hundreds-of-millions-in-i-79-high/article_f9fa378c-dee6-11ee-b15a-97de874762ca.html #2 – From THE DAILY304 – David Martinelli and Scott Zemerick are spearheading the West Virginia Small Satellite Center, an innovative program that aims to solve real-world problems using state-of-the-art satellite technology. “What makes us unique is that we are an economic development initiative as well as an innovation initiative. So on one side, we are going to be doing innovation, and on the other side, we are going to make sure that innovation brings value and purpose toward economic development in West Virginia,” said Martinelli. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FQc896qpPI #3 – From GET TUCKERED – There is no doubt, April showers will bring May flowers. Between now and May, we will experience what is locally referred to as mud-season. Temperatures fluctuate, precipitation types diverge, peepers peep, the red hue of buds emerge from treetops. It's a great time to get out and about in Tucker County. Spring ramps have become in vogue over the years for good reason. They are delicious, extremely seasonal, and unique to Appalachia and West Virginia. This is a delicacy worth pursuing and can be experienced at a variety of Tucker County's restaurants like Hellbender Burritos and Elender's Global Cuisine. With the onset of spring comes West Virginia's annual trout stocking. An average of over two million trout are stocked per year. Your odds are good for catching rainbow, brown, and golden trout in one of Tucker County's lakes and streams. The best way to stay dry during those April showers is perched behind the windshield overlanding Canaan Loop Road. The 17-mile loop takes you along native trout streams and towering red spruce forest so dense that the moss-covered ground never sees the light of day. Hiking trailheads along Canaan Loop offer many options to get out and stretch your legs. At the end or beginning of your trip be sure to stop at Lindy Point for endless views of the Blackwater Canyon. They blindly wandered through this never-ending city, until one ordinary and slightly leisurely lunchtime, a small mistake, a funny incident, disrupted their lives.Zh: 在到达繁忙的首都国际科技园区之前,李伟和张伟都会走过一条名叫“彩虹大道”的小巷。每天的这个时刻,两人几乎是饭盒一对一的匹配,一起步入他们的午餐时间。En: Before arriving at the bustling Capital International Science and Technology Park, both Li Wei and Zhang Wei would pass through a small alley called "Rainbow Avenue". At this moment every day, the two of them almost perfectly matched their lunchboxes and entered their lunchtime together. En: On this sunny day, the two of them met on Rainbow Avenue, nodding and smiling at each other, and then each selected their preferred meals from the food cart queue. After completing this simple choice, they walked side by side towards the office. And it was at this moment that a magnificent mistake occurred - they unintentionally and without realizing it, swapped each other's lunchboxes. En: Zhang Wei, being a southerner, appreciated slightly spicy dishes, which reflected his rural roots. West Virginia High Tech Foundation President and CEO Jim Estep said that NOAA's “significant expansion” is one of the primary focuses of the foundation right now, with the federal agency looking to invest between $200 million and $300 million in infrastructure at the I-79 Technology Park over the next several years. “A big (infrastructure project) that's already begun is the expansion of the supercomputing center, which is called the NOAA Environmental Security Computing Center,” Estep said. “They are investing $30 million in the center's infrastructure, basically more than doubling its capacity for high-performance computing assets. That is going to really bump us up nationally in terms of truly being one of the most significant locations in the United States for supercomputing.” The foundation also is finishing up construction on a new antenna system in the I-79 Park for NOAA's space weather program, which is also in partnership with NASA. An additional new antenna system is also under construction, this one for NOAA's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System. The foundation is also working with NOAA in the development of an “entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem” for the commercial climate and weather sector, a sector that Estep has been wanting to court to the area for the last few years. Peachtree Corners was developed as a planned community in the 1960's with Technology Park as its core, to lure tech companies to the Gwinnett County area, but did not officially incorporate as a city until 2012. The Gwinnett County Public Library built its Peachtree Corners Branch in 1986, and the branch has continued to serve this unique community ever since!
A German-based robotics company is building a new manufacturing facility to Canton, expected to create 137 new jobs in Cherokee County, Governor Brian Kemp announced. Becker Robotic Equipment, a global cable and robotic machinery manufacturer specializing in individualized robotic equipment, will invest over $30 million in the facility, which will house its North American headquarters. Headquartered in Dülmen, Germany, Becker was founded in 1993 with the aim of supplying accessories and integrated automated systems, mainly for the automotive industry. Becker's new North American headquarters and manufacturing facility will be located at The Bluffs at Technology Park in Canton. The facility is expected to consist of three adjacent buildings and will be designed with clean energy solutions, such as solar panels, according to the governor's office. The company is looking to hire for sales and applications engineers, automotive project managers, non-automotive project managers, inside sales support staff, project engineers, office administrators, HR generalists, manufacturing technicians, and customer and service technicians. A six-episode series was recently filmed in Cherokee County, using the backdrop of local buildings, businesses and areas to help tell its story. “These Stones” is a Christian faith-based series written and produced by Woodstock resident Cheryl McKay Price. The series tells the story of a wayward daughter who, after her mother is killed, takes over a supernatural program to help others, according to its synopsis on IMDb.. Though she struggles to believe in God, she finds herself matching mysterious visitors from the past to those facing challenges today. The series was shot from September 19 to October 21 in various locations throughout Woodstock including the downtown area, Rootstock, Circle of Friends and a farmhouse in Canton. Scenes were also shot in Marietta. Price said she is hopeful for a release by the end of next year. The show features a cast of actors, most of whom are from Georgia. Several of the crew members and production team are from Cherokee County as well, Price said. Circle of Friends, a Woodstock coffee shop which employs people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, was part of the set in an episode about a boy with Down syndrome and his mother. At first, the mother is afraid to let her son integrate into society because he has been bullied, Price said. The boy wants to make friends, so the mom eventually lets him get a job at Circle of Friends and interact with other people. Price said she hopes there could be more seasons to the show, though the show's first season is structured to tell a complete story. The screenwriter and producer said she enjoyed the process, and added that the Cherokee Office of Economic Development's film office, led by Molly Mercer, was very easy to work with in helping her achieve her vision. The Cherokee County school board has won state honors for its communications initiatives. For the fourth consecutive year, the Georgia School Boards Association has awarded the Cherokee school board its Leading Edge Award, Cherokee County School District announced. The past three years, the honor earned has been in the Culture, Climate and Organizational Efficacy category, and this year's award is in the Communication category. The awards, presented in seven categories, recognize innovative practices by school boards and school districts that make a significant and positive impact on students. School Board Chair Kyla Cromer accepted the award on the board's behalf at a Georgia School Boards Association ceremony Friday morning. CCSD's strategic communications plan outlines how communications efforts will help achieve the goals of the district's overall blueprint strategic five-year plan for continuous improvement. Key to this plan is reporting success stories, which are shared daily across numerous district and school platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters and publications and also are shared with traditional local media outlets. The district's communications team annually trains staff from schools and district departments and divisions on best communications practices including how to share their successes stories. School board members also receive communications training and guidance throughout their time in office. The Cherokee boys' basketball team kept its undefeated record intact with its 74-64 win at Sequoyah on Friday night. With a nice lift from Lawrence Sanford, the Warriors pulled ahead in the second quarter and never looked back. Both teams were scoring well to start the night, with the Chiefs taking a 19-16 lead after the first period. Cherokee made adjustments going into the second quarter, though, and built a 28-21 lead in just over three minutes. Sanford was a big part of Cherokee's run, scoring its first eight points of the second quarter. He connected on three 3-pointers in the frame and finished the night with a game-high 22 points. Offense has been the Warriors' strength through the first five games, as expected, though its defense took major strides. It was tested against Sequoyah's high-powered offense and passed with flying colors. About one in six Cherokee County voters had cast a ballot ahead of the December 6 runoff contest between Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock and his Republican challenger Herschel Walker, according to numbers from the Georgia Secretary of State's website. As of Friday morning, 33,008 Cherokee County voters had cast a ballot, according to the state website, about 17% of the county's registered voters. The state reported 28,110 of those votes were cast in person. Turnout for Georgians returning to the polls this week to vote in the December 6 runoff election surpassed 1 million ballots cast ahead of Election Day. Cherokee County was showing 4,895 absentee ballots had been accepted by the close of polls Thursday, and there were another 2,711 ballots were still outstanding. The state numbers showed that Cherokee's in-person early voting increased as the week went on. The county began early voting at one location Sunday and saw 1,127 ballots cast in person that day. When voters returned to polls Monday, 5,319 voted early in Cherokee, and Thursday, that number was 7,651. Cherokee's Toni Warren erupted for a game-high 32 points in the 72-49 win over Sequoyah at the War lodge on Friday night. Warren tallied 10 points in the third quarter alone, helping the Lady Warriors secure their second victory in a row. It was back-and-forth in the first quarter, with Cherokee holding a slim 16-14 lead at the break. Warren made her presence felt early, hitting a 3-pointer and then earning three free throws on the next possession. She hit four of five free throws in the period. Warren opened the second quarter with a tough mid-range fadeaway and nailed another two possessions later to push the Lady Warriors' lead to 23-19. Behind Warren's 32 points, Hannah Harris was the lone other Cherokee player in double figures with 11 points. Riley Simmons pitched in eight points, including two 3-pointers in the second quarter. The Lady Warriors connected on 11 3-pointers in Friday's win. For Sequoyah, Elle Blatchford led the way with 16 points as she continues to ramp up after returning from injury. She had nine points in the fourth quarter. Gray and Abdus-Salaam each tallied nine points, followed by Shelby Belanger with six points. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. In this episode, host David Abrams is in conversation with Jamie Petten, President & Executive Director of the Kanata North Business Association. We learn about Jamie's career journey, having spent the last decade working in Kanata North Technology Park, Canada's largest technology park. She initially worked for the L-SPARK Accelerator program, transitioning more recently into leading the Kanata North Business Association and Hub350 Accelerator. Her story began on the west-end cliffs of Jamaica, supporting two Canadian entrepreneurs building a boutique destination hotel, restaurant and spa. Jamie draws on her experience in the hospitality industry as she continues to guide KNBA into the future. She discusses the need for human connection to feel our best mentally, but also highlights the need to think more globally and embrace the changes in thinking around how we live, work, play, learn and innovate. Since launching Hub350 in October 2021, Jamie shared that it has seen over 6,000 visitors – connecting in person for hot desking, larger events, community town halls, company gatherings and more. She facilitates a dialogue around how the technology park will continue to evolve in response to emerging needs. In order to attract and retain talent, a big part of the conversation amongst all of the stakeholders is adding new opportunities to live and play at the park, and making new investments to enhance physical workspaces. Jamie is very enthusiastic about the opportunity for HILO to play a role in helping to connect all the partners in the park and promote all of the park's activities. She loves innovation and Kanata North Technology Park's role in supporting its community members! Subscribe to TEN so you never miss an episode of the Tenant Experience Network.

Oceans and seas cover almost three quarters of the earth surface. They absorb almost all of the earth's excess heat and store some 93 per cent of all CO2. Now, oceans, from where life itself arose, are dying. It is estimated that over 150 million tons of plastic is already floating in the seas and oceans. The great Pacific garbage patch, 46 per cent of which is fishing nets, covers 1.6 million square kilometres. As far as commercial fishing is concerned, some 2.7 trillion fish are caught every year, even in marine protected areas. And there is an increase in chemical nutrients in the water, leading to excessive blooms of algae that deplete underwater oxygen levels, resulting in the development of so called dead zones. Such zones in the Baltic Sea have increased more than tenfold over the last century and the Baltic Sea now has the largest dead zone in the world. Andrius Sutnikas, coordinator of the Lithuanian Maritime Cluster at the Klaipėda Science and Technology Park, speaks with Andrew Wrobel about the challenges the blue economy currently faces, and some innovative solutions bringing more sustainable development to the maritime industry and offsetting climate change.
Austin Williams, co-founder and chief software architect at AMBOTS, a technology startup company at the Arkansas Research and Technology Park, talks about a "swarm" of robots that 3D print and perform other manufacturing tasks.

For almost two years, a group of neighbors out in Churchill have been fighting a Goliath. The retail giant Amazon has been lobbying to bulldoze the old Westinghouse Research & Technology Park to build a new distribution facility, bringing jobs but also trucking traffic to the largely residential borough. Officials now say that's over — that Amazon will look elsewhere — but residents and developers are still expected in court on Thursday to make their case. Senior producer Megan Harris is with vocal Churchill Future member Cathy Bordner to talk about why she's skeptical and what may come next. A lot of us have dreamed about coming up with a great idea that would address a need or demand in society while enriching us in the process. But there's a long and winding road between thinking up the Next Big Thing and making it a reality. On this edition of Out to Lunch Baton Rouge we meet a couple of folks who know this journey well. Clerc Bertrand is founder and owner of Workaru, an app that you can kind of think of as an Airbnb for office space. The Workaru app lets professionals find, compare, and book on-demand workspaces. Workaru helps connect people looking for a temporary workspace with businesses looking to monetize their available space - maybe an empty office, a conference room or a shared work room. This is especially relevant in the era of Covid, when a lot of employers are paying pricey leases every month for a lot of large office space they no longer need. Currently, Workaru has available space listed in four of Louisiana's five largest cities. Clerc is a native of small town Louisiana, who, also has had something of an illustrious professional track career and was a traveling representative for Brooks running company before coming up with the Workaru app. Bill Ellison is CEO of Innovation Catalyst, a nonprofit venture capital fund based at the Research and Technology Park here in Baton Rouge. The fund provides seed capital to Louisiana-based high-growth tech companies. Bill also heads up the Red Stick Angel Network, which is owned by Innovation Catalyst and seeks to identify, vet, and then aggregate it's members' investment capital to fund early-stage companies in Baton Rouge and elsewhere in Louisiana. Bill Ellison is a serial entrepreneur, attorney, and private investor, who was in private practice for 20 years before pivoting to the entrepreneurial world in 2000, when he became an investor, General Counsel and Director of a HIT start-up company. Bill has subsequently started, operated, and invested in several start-up companies. Normally Out to Lunch Baton Rouge is recorded over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard and we'll be returning to our regular lunch table next week. This week, conditions forced us onto Zoom. You can see photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website, itsbatonrouge.la where you can also check out more lunchtime conversation about Baton Rouge startups. This week on, “Inside the Skev,” we sit down with Sean Simpson, the co-founder of Lanzatech. LanzaTech is based in the Illinois Science and Technology Park that is located in Downtown Skokie. Lanzatech is a company that recycles carbon waste from steel mills and other carbon producers and turns it into fuel and chemical by-products. In this episode we discuss what brought Lanzatech from New Zealand to the Chicagoland area and specifically Skokie, and what they do. “Lanzatech’s mission is to turn our global carbon crisis into a feedstock opportunity with the potential to displace 30% of crude oil use today and reduce global CO2 emissions by 10%. By recycling carbon from industrial off-gases; syngas generated from any biomass resource (e.g. municipal solid waste (MSW), organic industrial waste, agricultural waste); and reformed biogas, LanzaTech can reduce emissions and make new products for a circular carbon economy.LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology is like retrofitting a brewery onto an emission source like a steel mill or a landfill site, but instead of using sugars and yeast to make beer, pollution is converted by bacteria to fuels and chemicals!” They currently have a commercial production facility in China, and in October 2018 fueled a Virgin Atlantic jetliner that flew from Orlando to London.Lanzatech can be found at https://www.lanzatech.com/Please share this episode and tag @lanzatech @downtownskokie @ istplifescience @intersectillinois @intersectillinois1 @CARGlobalCouncil @chicagocouncil #biorevolution #ClimateActionNow #bioeconomy@BioeconomyForum #cleanenergy #skokie #skokietech #insidetheskev #dreamtown #chicagobusiness #chicagotech @wsj @chicagotribune @crainschicago I’d like to thank several people for help with today’s show.
