Hauntology. Perhaps the phrase alone is enough to convince you we've wandered into the realm of pretension. But we've got to use it anyway, because this week on the podcast we're speaking with one of the main people associated with that term: Jim Jupp, co-founder of Ghost Box Records, which has mined TV soundtracks, vintage electronics, psychedelia, pop, and supernatural folklore for decades, issuing music by Broadcast, Pye Corner Audio, The Advisory Circle, and Jupp's own band, The Belbury Poly. Last year, The Belbury Poly released The Path. Borrowing the soundtrack work of Roy Budd and Roger Webb as a starting point, Jupp and crew cook up a heady blend of sound, indulging loping, flute-led jazz passages, delay-soaked kosmische soundscapes, and bombastic bursts of wah-wah and fuzz guitar and funk drums. And over it all is novelist and poet Justin Hopper, who adds quixotic and evocative narration to the record. This week on Transmissions, Jupp joins us to discuss his storied label, plumbing the nostalgic depths, the evocative spaces of The Twilight Zone, fairy lore, extraterrestrial, and yes, "hauntology." Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on Transmissions? Amen Dunes joins us to discuss Death Jokes. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by our members. For this special episode, I walked on the South Downs with Jim Jupp of Belbury Poly and Ghost Box Records, discussing the latest BP album The Path. Good friend of the podcast Jim Jupp recently released a new album under his Belbury Poly name, and through Ghost Box, the record label he co-founded with artist/designer Julian House. Rather than a solo piece, however, this one involves a 'band' setting augmenting his synths and obsessions with library-music inspired claustrophobic soundtrack-funk, plus my own contribution as narrator, telling a vague tale of a walker descending into madness on the uncanny paths of England. We walked and talked at the end of the summer, and here 'tis... Check out Belbury Poly's The Path through all the normal record-shopping and streaming spots, and Ghost Box Records' own shoppe. The music is, obviously, also from that album. BP did the Uncanny Landscapes title theme, too... Host Justin Hopper has an Uncanny Landscapes substack - it's free, and includes the podcast + more. Or a 'squirrel' robot that uses its tails to signal danger to its wanna-be species.   Besides his website, Ian has a TIkTok with loads of videos, and Instagram, too. It's well worth looking at these to see the robots while you listen.   The music in this episode is by the great guitarist Nick Jonah Davis, from his album When the Sun Came - appropriately spring-like and acoustic for Ian's playful, joyful robots.   Host Justin Hopper has an Uncanny Landscapes substack - it's free, and has the first post of the podcast + more.   It's been three years since the last season of Netflix's Stranger Things. Now with the 4th season upon us it must be time for a new mix - Stranger Synths 2022. Similar to previous version of Stranger Synths, this takes the retro vibe of the show's soundtrack and collects tracks that sound like they would fit perfectly in the TV series. I wasn't planning on doing a mix this time around until I stumbled on the opening track Cybernaut by Jonny Fallout. The track can be found on a compilation from Triplicate Records called "Protozoa." As soon as I heard the track I was hit with a great Stranger Things vibe so I knew I had to gather more tracks and put together another mix.  I ended up going back to Triplicate Records three more times for this mix, using tracks from Hverheij, BVSMV, and Willebrant. Her recent book Heavy Time follows a 'pilgrimage' walk through the east of England, exploring the idea of 'thin places' and walking with intent. She speaks to us about psychogeography, hauntings, the dissolving lines between her field and 'new nature writing', women in psychogeography and more.   Links: Sonia has a website here. Her latest book Heavy Time is available from Penned in the Margins, and her Twitter account is the source for Distance Drift on many Sundays. Women Who Walk also has a dedicated site.   The music in this episode is by Oddfellow's Casino, the recording project of writer and producer Dr. David Bramwell, and includes work from both the instrumental and with-words versions of their album, The Cult of Water. It's available from the Oddfellow's Casino Bandcamp page.     A year or two ago I read a sci-fi novel in which some of the main characters were sentient robots. When two of them would meet they establish secure channels with dialog such as "I am Paladin. You are unknown. Here comes my data. We want information about a pirate named Judith Chen. She goes by Jack … That is the end of my data." For some reason the line "Here comes my data" stuck with me.   I immediately wrote it down as a possible title for a mix. I thought it would fit well with a slightly more upbeat electronic mix. And so this mix was born, or more like artificially grown in a lab.   The mix starts with a track from Saul Stokes. I haven't listen to Stokes in years but when I stumbled on his album "Local Crowd," I knew I had to include it. He still has a unique sound which comes from, I believe, the fact that most of his synths are built from scratch.    The rest of the mix a a nice combo of new music with some older tracks, some from as far back as 2003. Oops! One short track is from 1987.   I think the whole mix hangs together quite well, with the vibe of a digital handshake.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Saul Stokes - My memory I hope you remember (Local Crowd 2017) 04:12    Time Rival - Vaporous (Vertigo Sessions 2021) 08:22    Joel Vandroogenbroeck - rock program (Digital Project 1987) 08:57    Hannah Peel - Fir Wave (Fir Wave 2021) 12:45    Polypores - Fairy Rings (Shpongos 2021) 17:03    Coti - Tiptoe (Metamemoria 2020) 19:49    Zoltan Fecso - Wave (Silken Wave EP 2019) 28:55    Robert Lippok - Schemes Like These (Falling Into Komëit 2004) 31:15    Jan Jelinek - B1. Tom Dibb, multi-instrumentalist and singer songwriter of merit is bookending the show this week. Live from Grand Chapel Studios. It's a sound of alt-country or could indeed spawn a new genre of Briticana, if that makes any sense. It certainly will once you listen to this aspiring artist. Join us as we head to South East England for the sounds of Tom Dibb. Tobin becomes tetchy this week as Richard introduces Belbury Poly to the show. Despite Tobin's love of all things literary, he denounces Chanctonbury Rings as a derisory reading of a novel to music. Phillistine that Tobinis, Richard thinks he's completely missed the point. However, to redress the balance, Tobin brings us Lord Cut Glass with his Gaelic lilted vocals and interesting musical phrasing. There is some pronunciation argument here. It's a hands down winner and a firm placement in the FTBOTRB Jukebox of Fame. New Music Selection Tobin, as ever, painfully dedicated to New Music as he is, brings Storme's latest track to the studio. It's a stark reminder that we aren't in control of our planet as much as we think we are. Jamiroquai wrote about this nearly 30 years ago which raises the question is Storme late to the party. And will her track be anywhere near as influential? Following on from Richard's personal vinyl party on our Patreon channel where he played the new EP from Squid, we play the excellent track The Cleaner direct from the vinyl in the studio. Become a Patron of the show to hear more from this must-hear band. Another pre-release track from Mike Pope on the show this week, just ahead of eagerly awaited LP later this month. From the impressive stable of Blind Owl Records in San Diego, it's currently our most anticipated recording of 2020. Finally, vocal melody masterclass is conducted this week by Thao & Mirah. Featured before on the show in an entirely different guise, this track demands attention in a way that few songs have the ability to do. Join us this week as we mine our way to the bottom of the record box.

Shock World Service 045 We Are The Moment, Built To Last by Cian Ó Cíobháin 18/01/12 Galway, Ireland 1. Arthur Russell – A Little Lost Another paeon to absent love from the cherub-voiced cellist. 2. Destroyer – Chinatown Sounds like Paddy McAloon from Prefab Sprout duetting with Belle & Sebastian-era Isobel Campbell. 3. Ultra Vivid Scene feat Kim Deal – Special One A huge favourite from my teenage years, this one had all but disappeared from my life, only re-discovering it on YouTube last summer. 4. Burt Bacharach – Something Big One of the most joyous songs I had the fortune of hearing last year, it's from a 1973 LP called ‘Living Together' which is not too shabby at all. I only wish the song would to on for longer. 5. Family Of Eve – Please Be Truthful 1979 debut single from Pittsburg outifit that first came to prominence VIA Keb Darge's first ‘Legendary Deep Funk' compilation on BBE. 6. Laura Lee – Don't Leave Me Starving For Your Love A rarely heard, but utterly beguiling, Holland-Dozier-Holland composition from Chicago-born Laura Lee. 7. Mystery Jets – The Tale From an American-only release, the ‘Flotsam & Jetsam' EP from 2007, this sounds like three songs rolled into one. 8. Da Luniz – I Got Five On It Bit of a worldwide hit this one in 1995, a quick Google reveals this nugget of information: “ ‘I got 5 on it' is a phrase meaning to pay half for a dime bag (a 10 dollar bag of weed) with another person.” 9. Aaliyah – More Than A Woman I occasionally go through stages of suddenly loving genres that I may not have cared for too much in the recent past. It happened with country last summer with R'n'b. 10. Oneohtrix Point Never – Child Soldier Daniel Lopatin's new LP ‘Replica' as O.P.N. reveals an artist totally letting loose in his new studio. 11. Virginia Astley – A Father Kind of reminds me of Julee Cruise (especially her ‘Twin Peaks' songs) . . from Virgina's 1986 LP ‘Hope In A Darkened Heart'. 12. Scritti Politti – Absolute From 1985's ‘Cupid & Psyche 85' LP, Gart Greenside sounds utterly at one with dreamy post new wave synth-pop. 13. Belbury Poly – The Willows Jim Jupp, who runs the Ghost Box label, has released many records under the Belbury Poly moniker. 14. Disco Inferno – Love Stepping Out Disco Inferno were formed in Essex in the late 80s and though they released a few LPs & EPs in the early to mid-90s, they remained completely off my radar until One Little Indian compiled ‘The Five EPs' (which features this beauty) last year. 15. Kitchens Of Distinction - Drive That Fast Every podcast needs an anthem that makes you want to roll down the car windows & crank up the volume. 16. Sascha Funke – Now You Know From the ‘Funkt EP,' released on Bpitch Control in 2002, this manages to sound like Ricardo Villalobos reworking The Postal Service, while still finding a cameo for Fritz Kalbrenner on vox. 17. Joy O – Sicko Cell Slowly crept up to become an unlikely anthem in the clubs last year, with strong support from Pearson Sound, Jackman, Loefah & Bok Bok. 18. Westbam & Nena – Oldschool, Baby (Piano Mix) “We are the moment, built to last”. Breathless sun-kissed, Italo-influenced classic from 2002, featuring none other than the voice of yer wan who sang '99 Luftballons'.

I had already started this mix when our guest mixer, Jason, sent me his "Satellite" mix. I hadn't thought of satellite = moon until I saw his pic for the mix. So it's kind of funny that the next mix to be posted is a moon mix. I did this one the way I've done some mixes in the past, all the tunes have the word "moon" in the title. Came up with an interesting collections of tracks. It would have been fun to use more of the vocal cuts like Nick Drake - Pink Moon or Cowboy Junkies - Blue Moon, but I guess I wanted it to be mostly ambient. So only one vocal tune gets used & that's "Moon River" by Petra Haden And Bill Frisell to close out the mix. I think my favorite tune is the first one by Belbury Poly, it sounds like it could be used in some old sci-fi moon flick. Hope you enjoy the mix.
