This episode's guest is the CEO and founder of Bokksu, Danny Taing. Bokksu delivers authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products to customers around the world. I was so impressed with his story that I bought a box for my daughter, and it's awesome. We talk about the inspiration behind Bokksu, how he evolves the company in a competitive subscription box market, and how his decision to come out has influenced his leadership style.
This week we're presenting a conversation with Louis Monoyudis, CMO at Bokksu, a company that's basically a penpal who sends you Japanese snacks instead of letters. Louis has been around the block - Harvard folklore degree, fashion stints at Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, and more startups than you can count. During this chat, Louis shared a whole lot: Including how his unorthodox background in folklore and mythology actually laid the foundation for his marketing prowess, the challenges of being a CMO in the startup world, and why building a diverse and inclusive team is crucial for success. Louis' insights are a crash course in out-of-the-box thinking and nurturing a culture where everyone can thrive.

He's very cosmopolitan/urbane, lives in the city center even though he's 60, takes public transit, legitimately does his weekly grocery shopping at boutique cheese/bread/specialty food stores, always dressed impeccably. OWNS a beautiful specialty meat slicer that he has in his kitchen and uses for fresh/thinly sliced prosciutto (before you go there I've done ham hocks more than once). Interests: art, food and entertaining, culture. Loves to read, usually big sweeping historical books. Always the hardest person to shop for on my list because his taste level is very out of my price range and I'm tapped out on the specialty food theme. Dad recently become a grandfather (2 grandsons and one more coming in Jan) and it was a little weird for him - he loves my sons but the image of an old guy in a rocking chair teaching kids how to whittle didn't jive with his understanding of himself. He's starting to settle in. Has a very unique grandpa name with many indecipherable layers of historical context and family history that the grandkids will probably never understand. Buys them beautifully made clothes that they would immediately ruin. Talks to them about their shared interests: boats, planes, and other well-designed machines.Hoste Bottled Cocktails Regalis Black Truffle Microwaveable PopcornNordic Ware Indoor/Outdoor Kettle Smoker Custom OpinelBerea College Intersections Charcuterie BoardBig Nights PlannerSuzanne Sullivan Porcelain Playing Cards or Bone Inlay Domino SetBlackwater & Sons Return Address StampBillion Oyster Project donationRex Design Oyster PlateMy dad. 82 years old. Grills meat for dinner nearly every night but stuck in his ways when it comes to cooking. Very much a creature of habit. Likes jazz and classic rock. He's a 67-year-old workaholic lawyer many have described as "quite the character, huh?" He takes himself very seriously, though he also can be quite mischievous and loves to stir the pot. His interests include fishing, geopolitics, and monologuing. I truly feel like I've explored all gifting avenues already with him: consumables for his major sweet tooth, outdoorsy gear that he already buys himself, political or economic books that won't lead to arguments (he's conservative, I'm liberal), and seemingly every dog toy or black Labrador art print under the sun. He doesn't drink and mostly sticks to heart-healthy food. While he has many entertaining childhood stories, it seems unlikely he will set aside time for something activity-based like StoryWorth, as he spends most of his at-home free time watching YouTube videos about things like beekeeping (yes, I've gotten him multiple artisanal honeys that had little impact). Back home and in the studio, the hosts shared additional highlights — and unexpected sights – from Expo West 2023, including introductions to several innovative and early-stage brands. Also, Ray Latif offered his take on the 2023 Seafood Expo North America and sat down with Mason Dixie Foods founder and CEO Ayeshah Abuelhiga for the first in a new series of interviews focused on lessons acquired by entrepreneurs at various stages of their respective journeys. Show notes: 0:39: Listen Up, VIPs. Anaheim's Best Parking Lot. Dr. Squatch vs. Mr. Mike. – The crew encouraged listeners to become Taste Radio VIPs and discussed the benefits that come with it, before chatting about Expo West sheen and bubble guts, Ray's luxurious workspace (not really) and his apology to exhibitors. They also spoke about meaningful and touching interactions with Expo attendees, meeting new brands and founders at Startup CPG's Alley Rally meetup, a superb wine-alternative brand and why Mike might not be welcome at a certain booth in a year's time. Later, they also sampled reformulated versions of “big name” candy bars and discussed findings from a fish-laden trade event. 36:32: Interview: Ayeshah Abuelhiga, Founder/CEO, Mason Dixie Foods – We last spoke with Abuelhiga in March, 2021 following the company's $6.3 million Series A funding round, which preceded the launch of its popular biscuit breakfast sandwiches. In the time since, Mason Dixie has experienced remarkable growth, with revenue up 300% over the past year, according to the company. It also launched a national partnership with Marriott Select Brand Hotels, where its grab-and- go breakfast items are stocked in over 3,500 of the chain's locations. This past week the company also introduced three new product lines at Expo West 2023: Liege Waffle Sandwiches, Liege Waffles and Ready-to-Heat Biscuits. In this interview, Abuelhiga discussed lessons learned from her nearly nine years as an entrepreneur, including those about raising capital, customer service, and sexism and bias in the food industry, among other topics. He received a dual Bachelor's in Psychology and Communication, and a Master's in Sociology, all from Stanford University. He then worked as a marketing strategist at Google HQ. After that, he relocated to Japan for a position at Rakuten. It was there, during the four years he spent living and working in Tokyo, that he developed his deep love of Japanese food and culture (as well as met his wonderful husband). Following Rakuten, Taing returned to New York to study Computer Science at Columbia University. Inspired by his passion for Japanese culture, Asian-American representation, and entrepreneurship, Taing founded Bokksu in 2015 with $5,000 of his own savings. Utilizing every skill and contact he had, Taing was able to go from concept to launch in just three months, without an additional penny of outside funding. And he sold through his first run of boxes in less than a week. Today, the company is valued at $100M and employs a staff of 50, 80% of whom are BIPOC, female, and/or LGBTQ+; a metric Taing is particularly proud of.In his spare time, Danny is an avid rock climber, fierce board game competitor, and, along with his husband, anime binge-watcher.Meet BokksuBokksu delivers authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products to customers around the world. Subscription boxes can be a tough business. Most of these startups shine brightly as they burn through investor capital and flame out well before becoming profitable. But there are exceptions. So today we sit down with Danny Taing, the founder of Bokksu, to learn what he and the team did differently, how they obtained substantial VC funding, and where they are going from here. We also talk about Japan's unique snack culture and the surprising insight is has to offer about Japanese culture in general. It's a great conversation, and I think you'll enjoy it. Show Notes Why the world needed one more subscription box startup What Japanese snacks (and food in general) are different Strategic storytelling: aka "When you are talking about snacks, you are not really talking about snacks." Meet the world's happiest QA team Why Bokkusu could succeed when so many subscription-box startups ad failed Growing from zero to 1,000 and then 1,000 to 10,000 What really goes into the box Which Japanese snacks are most loved overseas The strategic expansion to Bokksu Market and Bokksu Grocery How a food startup can raise real money in a world of software-focused VCs Why "Japanese culture" startups almost always fail Links from the Founder Everything you evert wanted to know about Bokksu Check out some amazing snack pictures Follow Danny on Twitter @dannytaing Bokksu's amazing Maker Videos (seriously, these are great) Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for listening. Now, I'm going to warn you in advance. This episode is going to make you hungry. Danny Taing founded Bokksu to sell unique Japanese snacks to the world. And we spent a lot of time talking about sweet and savory snacks and all of the unique cakes and the baked goods so be ready for it. Now, both subscription boxes and e-commerce from regional foods are both very hard business models for startups. They're popular but almost all of them fail and fail fast. Danny explains that when he started, almost everyone was highly skeptical. And by the way, that includes your humble narrator as well. I knew Danny when he was just starting. Well today, Danny explains what he did differently. How he evolved from skirting the law as a snack smuggler to growing a trusted consumer base to receiving $22 million in investment to building $100 million dollar company. This episode is a masterclass on how you need to change not only your strategy, but also change who you are at every step of your journey. But you know, Danny tells that story a lot better than I can so let's get right to the interview. Interview Tim: So we're sitting here with Danny Taing Bokksu, who is delivering tasty Japanese snacks to the entire world. So thanks for sitting down with us, Danny. Danny: Thanks for having me, Tim. It's a pleasure to be here. Tim: That was a really simple introduction of Bokksu. I'm sure you can explain it much better than I can. So what exactly is it that Bokksu does? Danny: Yeah. So our mission is to kind of bridge cultures through authentic Japanese food and snacks and products. We do this by, as you just mentioned, delivering these delicious Japanese snacks worldwide in our monthly curated snack subscription box. We have a whole lot of products from there but I'm happy to get into that later. Tim: Yeah, and I do want to dive into it. You guys have come a long way. It expanded a lot since you started, and you've delivered over a million boxes of snacks, which is awesome. So what exactly is a subscription box? Danny: Many people already know about subscription boxes out there. But what makes box really special is that we directly partner with the centuries old family snack bigger businesses throughout Japan, everything from Hokkaido red bean buns to Kyoto matcha cakes and Okinawa chinsukos.
Bokksu, which connects U.S. customers with Japanese snacks, is still bullish on subscription boxes, according to its founder and CEO Danny Taing. The company, which first launched in 2016, began by offering a subscription box that featured Japanese snacks that were never before available in the U.S. Growth for the first few years was on the slower side, as the company remained mostly bootstrapped. Two years after launching, the company really started to hit its stride. And is now expanding beyond subscription boxes and launching its own marketplace. "In early 2018, we had about 1,000 subscribers, and in just one month, we grew that to over 3,000," Taing said on the Modern Retail Podcast. "It was because of this viral Facebook kind of campaign." With that growth, however, came some struggles. "The warehouse in Japan was not equipped to deal with triple the amount of orders," Taing said. "And that was way before I had a logistics team or director." But Bokksu was able to roll with the punches and still grow. The company has doubled its revenue and customer base every year since 2018. This came as other subscription box brands like Birchbox faced major headwinds. But, according to Taing, Bokksu never experienced subscription fatigue. "I think what helped was that we have a very strong underlying product that changes every month that a lot of people get a lot of value from," said Taing. "It's not faddy." Earlier this year, Bokksu closed a $22 million Series A round of funding, giving it a $100 million valuation. That happened after years of receiving nos from VCs. For Taing, it was validation that his company had staying power. With this cash infusion, Bokksu is focusing on its marketplace expansion. Still, Bokksu remains focused on its hero product. "Subscriptions are still the majority," said Taing. "That's our core thing."

Our long time listeners know that Nick is obsessed with fun flavors of Kit Kats and spent much of the early pandemic trying to track down mint Kit Kats. Which are delicious. As part of our research into flavored Kit Kats, we discovered that there are literally hundreds of Kit Kat flavors in Japan. We decided we need to taste these flavors and share our experience with all of you.Luckily for our wallets, we didn't have to fly to Japan to try all of the Kit Kat flavors, instead we purchased a Japanese Kit Kat Variety Party Box from Bokksu.com. Bokksu is a company that's set out to empower Japan's traditional snackmakers by sharing their authentic food and stories with the world. We were just happy to try the 18 flavors of Kit Kats in the box.Flavors ranged from odd (Azuki Red Bean & Strawberry Sandwich) to normal (plain Kit Kats) to really fun (Mt. Fuji Strawberry Cheesecake) and everywhere in between. Join us on our journey down the Kit Kat rabbit hole.If you would like to try your own Japanese Kit Kats, or any of the other authentic Japanese snacks available on Bokksu, use this link to save $15 on your first order. In this episode, I have the pleasure of talking with the founder and CEO of one of the biggest and most popular Japanese Subscription boxes on the market today, Danny Taing of Bokksu! Before Bokksu was known as a trailblazing New York and Tokyo-based D2C e-commerce and media platform for Japanese snack food and media, Danny had lived in Japan for four years.Danny originally bootstrapped Bokksu from 20 subscribers to 3 million dollars! What started out as a passion for authentic and real Japanese snack food, quickly swelled to a high 7 figure business in just a few short years. Bokksu has now been featured in Buzzfeed, the Wall Street Journal, Eater and Mashable amongst others. Bokksu has been able to lean on and utilize both Japanese snack makers and fulfillment centers, as well as their North American office which houses all the ads, creative and marketing. They source only real Japanese food, and partner directly with centuries old family snack makers in Japan to live out their mission of bridging people together and sustaining culture through authentic food and media. In his spare time, Danny is an avid rock climber who loves to get into fierce battles with friends over board games. Ah yes, the competitive spirit of a true entrepreneur… I love it. Episode Link: https://thesubscriptionboxshow.com/podcast-1 This episode is sponsored by Louis and Lea. Danny Taing is the founder and CEO of Bokksu, a monthly subscription service that delivers curated boxes of Japanese snacks and teas to your door. Danny was the first guest of SelfMade Stories back in October of 2018. Almost a year later he’s back to share how he has scaled his business to 7-figures without Venture dollars and built an even better product without changing the price. In 2019 they raised $1 million, expanded to Amazon, and built an engaging Facebook group of over 1,000 customers. He’s made some key hires that were essential to his growth and has really shifted his focus to telling the story behind Bokksu to his community of fans. Check them out on Instagram @bokksu or online at bokksu.com. Keep an eye out for all of the new and exciting things Bokksu has on the way and order yourself a box before they finally raise the price.

Sometimes food is the whole reason for a trip, but other times, like what we'll hear about in Episode 106 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, it's the unusual food experiences (planned or unplanned) that are what you remember. In this episode I chat first with Eva Westerling, who had some particularly unusual eating experiences while on a ten-day hike in the desert in Oman. Some parts of this chat are not for the squeamish! Next up I talk with Jacky Lamenzo about comfort food when we travel and about her experiences of eating like the locals when she was a teacher in China. Finally, I talk with Matt and Marilyn from Words With Winos about some of the more unusual foods they have tasted on their travels around the world, particularly in Asia - and if you don't like creepy-crawlies, you may not want to imitate them! I asked in the Thoughtful Travellers Facebook group for some ideas for celebrating the milestone of releasing Episode 100 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast and Emma came up with the fabulous idea of going behind the scenes. Thanks to everyone who pitched in with more questions and especially to Kati Craythorn who offered to interview me. This episode is a chat with Kati asking me those questions and it was so much fun to talk about the origins of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, some of the technical behind the scenes stuff, what I like and dislike about creating the podcast and how it's changed me. It was just wonderful to talk to Kati about all these topics and I hope you all enjoy listening to it too. Travel safety is often a concern and I'm sure I'm not the only one who checks government safety advisory messages (often with a grain of salt, it must be said) before I travel to a new destination. But honestly, crazy things can happen whether you're at home or abroad and I tend to agree with Pam Lynch, one of the guests in Episode 99 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, when she talks about the sentiment that either it was meant to be your time or it wasn't. In this episode, I start by talking to Pam about her experience of the Nepal earthquake of 2015. I know Pam well and have heard her speak about this close call many times, and yet every time she tells the tale I end up with goose bumps down my arms and shivers down my spine. You just never know what's around the corner, and Pam tells the tale in a way that will make you think. My second guest is Margarita Pas, a Polish globetrotter now based in the United States, who tells me about a trip she took to Namibia. It's a great warning tale about being prepared and how it's often easy to be poorly prepared when we don't know the place - I know I have sometimes done things abroad I would never be silly enough to do at home, but it's hard to know all the details when you're in an unfamiliar place. Margarita took a rather exciting road trip and came out fine and able to tell the tale - and it's well worth a listen. Ever got lost when you've been travelling? In my experience getting lost usually means you have a fun story to tell and that is definitely the case with the guests in this episode of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast. First up I chat with Kelly from Global Goose who had a bit of an incident following a hiking trail in the jungle in Borneo. All worked out well, of course, because Kelly lived to tell the tale on my podcast!! Next I talk to Erin from Oregon Girl Around the World who has a hilarious tale to tell of a family trip in Latvia. Let's just say that Erin will be a lot more careful with her Latvian place names in the future! Finally, I chat to Sandra Muller who has a particularly interesting perspective on getting lost when she travels (and one I wish I could adopt myself!).
