Have you ever felt that flutter in your gut when faced with a crossroads?  Your heart may skip a beat or butterflies erupt when soul-searching for your next powerful step.  But then your mind gets in the way.  My next guest had five primary carers from the age of 2 weeks to 13 years old living as a foster child from a Nigerian family born in Britain. Her childhood was full of instability and uncertainty, moving from home to home. She found her power when she was offered a choice at the age of 13. Her entire world stood still in this moment. She had never realised she had the right to choose.  I'm so grateful to be bringing you the incredible Kemi Nekvapil. I believe she is one of the best business coaches in the world! Kemi's career is a rich tapestry and her wealth of knowledge spans across many fields.  Kemi went to a baking college and worked as a chef on and off for 17 years. At the same time, she plunged herself into drama school and worked hard to become a very successful actor. Her body of work includes a leading role in a British television series for 3 and a half years (even writing her own role for the last 6 months), working for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and performing in a film with Colin Firth in the South of France.  We talk about the crossroads Kemi felt when deciding the path her career should take after such phenomenal success in acting. She followed her instinct and listened to her ‘Divine Download' to take the adventurous chef opportunity across the world in Thailand where she met her husband. She stresses the importance of listening to your intuition to become in tune with your gut, heart, and mind.  Kemi was chosen from thousands to be trained as a facilitator for Dr Brene Browns' Dare to Lead curriculum in Texas. She talks about her journey connecting with Brene and finding her power to lead exactly as herself without needing to fit into the patriarchal, white, male model. In her coaching practice, Kemi works with other female leaders to overcome their challenges and succeed in their fields.  We're all connected with nature and go through seasons and transformations. Kemi advises us, as women, to not do the disservice of ignoring the change when it's happening. She created the ‘Delight Diaries' to encourage her community to revel in the beauty of nature and the little moments every day that make us feel happy and alive.  I can't wait for you to listen to Kemi's transformative, courageous, and powerful story. If you'd like to learn more, Kemi has written two books, 'The Gift of Asking' and ‘Raw Beauty'. She has a third book coming out very soon about women in power.   Resources mentioned:  Book: Dare to Lead by Dr Brene Brown   Where to Find Kemi:  Website: Kemi Nekvapil - Shaping a new paradigm for women, leadership and life. The daily hazards and debates surrounding free speech dominate headlines and fuel social media storms. In an era where one tweet can launch — or end — your career, and where free speech is often invoked as a principle but rarely understood, learning to maneuver the fast-changing, treacherous landscape of public discourse has never been more urgent. In Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All, Suzanne Nossel, a leading voice in support of free expression, delivers a vital, necessary guide to maintaining democratic debate that is open, free-wheeling but at the same time respectful of the rich diversity of backgrounds and opinions in a changing country. Shermer and Nossel discuss: private vs. government restrictions on speech; hate speech, libel, slander, compelled speech; incitement to violence and insurrection; cancel culture; social media censorship; the euphemism treadmill, and more…

We discuss her leadership philosophy on understanding the role emotion plays into how we show up as leaders. Gaining comfort with the language of emotion helps us help others with the same process. Vulnerability, shame, empathy, and courage ... lets dig in! Episode 31: Leaders Change the Climate   “If given a choice between taking over for a good or bad outfit, I will choose the bad outfit every time. They will have nowhere to go but up.” Hal Moore   1. Leaders Don't Wait for Permission In the context of changing the climate of an organization, or team, the leader never waits for permission to do so.   Leaders have to have a kind of self-confidence. They are looking for ways to push the team to higher limits, and risk breaking something in the process.  When you look for somebody who is permission driven, you are going to find a person that ends up saying “NO” to some of the greatest ideas that could potentially change the direction of the team. “It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.” In the context of leadership, this is actually a good trait to have. If everybody already knew where they were going and how to get there, there would be no need for you.    2. Leaders Don't Put Themselves First BOOK: Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek  “Officers Eat Last” is a phrase used by the U.S. Marines that effectively means servant leadership.  "The buck stops here" - a phrase that was popularized by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, refers to the notion that the President has to make the decisions and accept the ultimate responsibility for those decisions. “Leaders eat last” and “the buck stops here” are two parts of the same principle, which is the responsibility of the leader.  QUESTION: Are you making sure the people you lead have the things they need (time, resources, etc.) to get the job done? Being a leader means serving more than others, and out-serving your people no matter what. BOOK: Dare to Serve, Cheryl Bachelder    3. Leaders Don't Take Others for Granted You have to get very familiar with, and live out the phrase “got your back.”  You always have to be looking out for your people.   If you find yourself in a position where you are wondering why nobody has your back, the answer is, because you never truly had theirs. If you want to climb in leadership, the higher you climb, the more you have to focus on others.  Just because you are in the position, does not mean that you are a leader.  Positional leadership is the lowest form of leadership.  BOOK: The 5 Levels of Leadership, John Maxwell When you are brought on by a company, or put in place by an organization, there is an informal process that each leader undergoes.  Within the first several weeks, your people are going to judge you and decide whether or not you are worthy to be trusted, and worthy to be followed.   You have to prove yourself by the way that you look, act, and make decisions.  You have to have all three.   It's not enough to keep the ship going, you have to make it better, faster, and more impactful.    MO's Final Thoughts Your least busy day on the job will be your first day.   You have to notice things that others do not, and you have to stay longer and later than anybody else on your team.   To get results, you have to put in the time.   Take initiative, and support your team and change the climate.   Trust is never further away than the time you are willing to put into it.  Take the time to build relationships, and put in the hard work.    Amazon Book Links: Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek - https://amzn.to/36Nes7Q  Dare to Serve, Cheryl Bacheldor - https://amzn.to/3oRfmpR  The 5 Levels of Leadership, John Maxwell - https://amzn.to/2YMuoTs    Special thanks to: –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Work it out by LiQWYD https://soundcloud.com/liqwyd  Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0  Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/l_work-it-out Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/erSmdVocHO0 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Tom Barrett | Dare to Dream Work to Win | Book Review by Lisa Woodruff My March book reviews are all about sales. I share books that have influenced how I sell, the sales process I use, and how I have been able to create enough income to keep a small business alive, growing, and thriving for 8 years.  Dare to Dream and Work to Win: Understanding Dollars and Sense of Success in Network Marketing by Thomas Barrett is one of my foundational sales books. Dr. Barrett taught me about  1. consistency, 2. a duplicatable system, and 3. time. These three core principles have helped me to build a growing, thriving, profitable business. No matter if you are working a direct sales business or starting your own business, this book has so much good information. Dr. Barrett also taught me about entrepreneurial time - how your hourly rate for your work improves over time and this helped me to have hope in the early years where I was putting in so many hours for so little money. I hope you enjoy this quick review! You can also watch this as a video review on YouTube.  Follow me on Goodreads! Senator Martha McSally Releases The Book Dare To Fly

Martha McSally is a fighter, a survivor, a leader, and a champion of never giving up. In DARE TO FLY, McSally shares inspiring life stories and timeless principles on how to overcome obstacles and adversity. She believes that none of us is born either courageous or afraid, but rather we all possess the ability to see opportunity in obstacles, cultivate inner resilience, and to succeed when others expect us to fail. At age twelve, McSally was devastated by the sudden death of her father. His dying words, "make me proud,"became her motto, and she turned to them to inspire her to break barriers and overcome fear. She went on to excel at the Air Force Academy, and, despite initially being rejected for pilot training because she was too short, McSally become America's first female fighter pilot to fly a jet in combat and the first woman to command a combat fighter squadron. She flew 325 combat hours and rose to the rank of Colonel. And she did it while having to face friendly fire: sexism, harassment, and worse by her peers and even her commanders. She fought for others too, in and out of the cockpit. As a young officer, McSally sued the Pentagon-and won-to free American servicewomen stationed in Saudi Arabia from archaic restrictions requiring them to travel fully veiled in traditional, black Muslim abayas, ride in the backseats of cars, and be treated more like property than valued service members. Determined to serve her country and to defy her detractors, McSally excelled in the Air Force andwas deployed six times to the to combat zones, earning the Bronze Star and six Air Medals. Check out the latest episode of the “This is Gonna Hurt” podcast. In this episode of the “This is Gonna Hurt” podcast, Gordon speaks about 10 behaviors that hinder leadership and organizational growth from Brene Brown’s Book “Dare to Lead”. They are: 1. Avoiding tough conversations, including giving honest, productive feedback. 2. Spending an unreasonable amount of time managing problematic behaviors. 3. Diminishing trust caused by lack of connection and empathy. 4. Not taking smart risks or creating and sharing bold ideas to meet changing demands and the need for innovation. 5. Getting stuck and defined by setbacks, disappointments, and failures. 6. Too much shame and blame, not enough accountability and learning. 7. Opting out of vital conversations about diversity and inclusivity because of the fear of looking wrong, saying something wrong, or being wrong. 8. Rushing into ineffective and unsustainable solutions rather than staying with problem identification and solving. 9. Organizational values are gauzy and assessed in terms of aspirations rather than actual behaviors that can be taught, measured, and evaluated. 10. Perfectionism and fear are keeping people from learning and growing. Thanks for listening. You can find Brene Brown’s book “Dare to Lead” here. What would you do if you dared to do and be more? Today I have proven sales and recruiting expert, Kimberly Patrick with me on this episode of Financial Fluency. Kimberly is a sales coach, entrepreneur, real estate investor, and author (among many other roles). She focuses on helping senior executives identify, select, and attract passive top talent. Kimberly’s path was a winding one. She starts by telling me how she got into her many businesses. From multi-level marketing to social work, to sales and recruiting, and finally to where she is today with her own business. For Kimberly, her entrepreneurial spirit started at a young age as she observed her grandparents run their own family business. When Kimberly was in college, she began her sales career with Mary Kay and got her taste of multi-level marketing. She quickly realized that she was better suited in a B2B environment instead of selling in a B2C market. After college, Kimberly went on to social work, but that career path was emotionally and mentally exhausting. It wasn’t until graduate school when she started building companies with her ex-husband and then she moved into the sales and recruiting industry. On the show, Kimberly tells me how she started her first recruiting business in 2008. But that year, real estate among many other industries collapsed. All of her clients were laying off instead of hiring. Kimberly hung in there a bit, but it was also a tough year for her personally as it was professionally. She was going through a divorce, and took a lot of time for herself and moved back to DC. Fast forward to today, Kimberly most recently launched a program, Smart Selling, for women in business. This program is 10-12 weeks, and it helps members identify clients, hammer in on their marketing and sales plans, optimize their sales funnels, and more. To help those having difficulty with this aspect of their business, they’ll take a look at where (what channels) they’re posting and what they’re posting. She says messaging is very important, so it’s essential to tweak as needed and get creative throughout the process. Kimberly’s Tips on How to Get Started: Identify your target audience. First, you have to make sure who your ideal client is and where they hang out. See where they are and start engaging with them. Build out your freebies. Get to know your target audience and start conversations with them. Let them know about your offers and freebies, especially if you’re selling directly to a consumer. Pick technology carefully. The technology you use throughout your business is very important. Kimberly uses a few tools to help her business such as ActiveCampaign and Instapage. You can learn more about Kimberly and her business by visiting her website: http://kimberlyapatrick.com/ or following her on social media: Purpose Driven Mompreneurs Facebook Group Facebook LinkedIn   Resources Smart Selling Coaching Program: http://kimberlyapatrick.com/getmoreclients Kimberly’s Book: Dare to be More   Bio Kimberly Patrick has served as an advisor to some of the brightest CEO’s, Presidents, and Leaders. Kim is a Certified Business Coach and a driven entrepreneur. She became passionate about working with business owners as a child, while growing up in a family business. Kim has been an entrepreneur since she was 17. She has founded multiple companies in real estate development, recruiting, and fitness. Kim lives in Austin and is a new mom. She is truly living the dream and juggling everything! She spends her “spare” time investing and developing real estate, coaching mompreneurs, and helping startups find and attract the best talent. Kim serves  on the board of directors of The Texas Recruiters Association and is the Director of StartupGrind Austin. She is deeply involved in the startup community where she spends her time helping companies select and hire the right talent. Kim’s passion is connecting people and helping startups grow their organizations with the best passive talent.
