One ink-black October night, when the power is out in the hills of Oakland, California, a stranger asks Amy to transcribe a love letter for him. When the stranger suddenly disappears, Amy's search for the letter's recipient leads her straight to Q and the most beautiful illuminated manuscript she has ever seen, the Codex Argentus, hidden away in Q's Library of Books That Don't Exist—and to a group of data privacy vigilantes who want her to burn Q to the ground. Amy's curiosity becomes her salvation, as she's drawn closer and closer to the secret societies and crackpot philosophers that haunt the city's abandoned warehouses and defunct train depots. All of it leads to an opportunity of a lifetime: an artist's residency deep in the holographic halls of Q headquarters. It's a dream come true—so long as she follows Q's rules. R.S.A. Garcia is a Trinbagonian speculative fiction author who lives in Trinidad and Tobago with her extended family, and as she says, too many cats and dogs :^) Her debut science fiction mystery novel, Lex Talionis, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, silver medal for best sci-fi fantasy horror ebook from the Independent Publishers award, and became an Amazon Best Seller. She's also published some incredible short fiction, including the novella Philia, Eros, Storge, Agápe, Pragma. If you speak Greek, then you may know the meaning of those words: they are all different kinds of love. The novella explores the question of love in its many different forms. The story's science-fictional world - which includes artificial intelligence, space travel, and interplanetary conflict - is imbued with relationship, family, and respect for tradition, but also a willingness to risk everything for a better future. It draws on both historical realities from our world and richly imagined possibilities from R.S.A.'s incredible imagination. So I'm really excited for you to hear this one, and I hope that you leave here with an urge to read even more of her beautiful writing.Connect with R.S.A.:rsagarcia.comrsagarcia.com/publicationsLex Talionis by R.S.A. There's more to self-publishing than just writing. As a self-published author, writers are often forced to take on multiple different roles involved in marketing and selling the books they've written - and not every author is able or interested in that side of the industry. For many writers, the idea of having somebody else take on the responsibility of publishing and marketing your book is really appealing, which is why the option of finding an independent publisher seems like a great option. Independent publishers straddle the gap between self and traditional publishing, offering more opportunities for new authors to see their books in print. However, finding and being accepted by a reputable independent publisher comes with its own set of challenges. Given that anyone can call themselves an independent publisher means there are many stories of predatory companies seeking out naïve authors and taking advantage of them. Author Daemon Manx fell victim to one of these disreputable companies when he started his journey as a writer - but instead of letting the bad experience disillusion him, he decided to start his own independent publishing company in order to do things the right way. Today, Daemon is here to not only tell us about his writing and publishing journey, but also to give us advice on what independent publishers can and can't do for authors - and how to make sure you're selecting one that isn't going to just rip you off. EPISODE 29 - Please welcome Carrie Severson, CEO & Founder of The Unapologetic Voice House. The Unapologetic Voice House is on a mission to build movements for unspoken voices to be seen, heard, and witnessed. As an independent publishing house, we publish brave, uplifting books that highlight or are told by courageous women or feature strong female characters. We're unapologetic in our passion for female voices and in our fierce approach to bring their stories to life.Independent Publishers for Female Voices - We are Passionate About PublishingAlthough authors are indeed considered a business these days, not every Author has the time or energy to write the book and grow their following. At The Unapologetic Voice House, we know firsthand what it takes to build a platform, create visibility, and grow an audience.Founded in 2019, we've been privileged to help authors publish ground-breaking works, and we have several new titles in the works. As independent publishers of female-driven stories, we're interested in building and launching legacies for women. We aspire to uncover new voices that women will be inspired by for years to come. Our founder, Carrie, aspires to help determined, courageous women share their experiences with the world. Once a journalist, she has always had a passion for storytelling. In her first business venture, she created a series of workbooks that were sold through an independent publisher.Eventually, she experienced burnout in her first business and went back to her roots of storytelling. She focused on telling personal stories for mass news outlets and even dabbled in public speaking for a bit. During that time, she wrote a book about her experience with burnout and pitched it to 80 traditional agents. Dozens responded positively with one big fat exception: her platform wasn't big enough. We are committed to supporting our authors. After all, publishing a book is a marathon and a team sport. It's technical, creative, and strategic, and you shouldn't have to do it alone!Supporting Authors Before, During, and After PublicationAt the Unapologetic Voice House, we work with authors with or without a platform. We're independent publishers who support every Author beginning the moment they sign their contract. We work with our authors to have their work seen by as many people as possible while letting them hold the rights to their work. Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and InclusionThe authors we work with come from all walks of life, and so do we. At The Unapologetic Voice House, diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core of who we are and what we do.This means we continually strive to engage, understand, and draw on various perspectives while ensuring that all individuals feel respected and experience fair treatment. Seeing beauty in diversity, we believe that every person's voice has value, and we celebrate those differences. Through our commitment to breaking down the barriers of discrimination, we provide an equal opportunity to participate. Weaving these values in all aspects of our work, we help broaden conversations and create balance in our multicultural society. https://theunapologeticvoicehouse.com/___https://livingthenextchapter.com/Podcast presented by TrueMediaSolutions.ca

Many authors would prefer to just write books and leave the marketing to someone else, but if a book is going to be successful, it is imperative that authors take an active role in marketing their books. Since a lot of authors feel uncomfortable with this, it's helpful if independent publishers work with their authors as partners on this issue. On this episode of “Inside Independent Publishing (with IBPA),” founder of independent publisher Motina Books Diane Windsor shares tips about how indie publishers can guide their authors to market their books successfully.PARTICIPANTSDiane Windsor is the founder of the traditional publishing company, Motina Books. Her mission is to publish books by and for mothers, giving women the chance to release their stories into the world. Diane works hard to create a partnership with her authors. Throughout the publishing process, Diane works closely with the author every step of the way – editing, formatting, cover design, distribution, and marketing.Marketing, of course, is the most important aspect of publishing your book. You could write the best book in the world, but it doesn't matter how good it is if no one knows about it. There is no easy solution for marketing your books. It takes just as much work as writing that first draft. And, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. You have to think about your specific target audience, and come up with out-of-the-box ideas for reaching them.Upcoming Books:Descent Into Ulthoa by Gordon Bonnet (my sole Motina Man) - October 19 - A sci fi thriller about a man searching for his twin brother who disappeared ten years earlier. In 2022, Motina Books has several books that will be released:Two non-fiction books on grief and loss.A historical fiction novel based on the true events of the Bath House Riot in El Paso, in 1917Two domestic thrillersOne picture book to raise limb-loss awareness and another that contains 20 biographies of people with disabilitiesA memoir by a dancer who became a pilates instructorSeveral children's chapter booksIndependent Book Publishers Association is the largest trade association for independent publishers in the United States. Part of the Colloquium on AI Ethics series presented by the Institute of Ethics in AI. This event is also part of the Humanities Cultural Programme, one of the founding stones for the future Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. What, if anything, can the ancient Greeks teach us about robots and AI? Perhaps the answer is nothing, or nothing so straightforward as a correct 'solution' to the problems thrown up by robots and AI, but instead a way of thinking about them. Join us for a fascinating presentation from Adrienne Mayor, Stanford University, who will discuss her latest book, Gods and Robots: Myths, Machines, and Ancient Dreams of Technology. This book investigates how the Greeks imagined automatons, replicants, and Artificial Intelligence in myths and later designed self-moving devices and robots. Adrienne Mayor, research scholar in the Classics Department and the History and Philosophy of Science program at Stanford University since 2006, is a folklorist and historian of ancient science who investigates natural knowledge contained in pre-scientific myths and oral traditions. Her research looks at ancient "folk science" precursors, alternatives, and parallels to modern scientific methods. She was a Berggruen Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, 2018-2019. Mayor's latest book, Gods and Robots: Myths, Machines, and Ancient Dreams of Technology, investigates how the Greeks imagined automatons, replicants, and Artificial Intelligence in myths and later designed actual self-moving devices and robots. Mayor's 2014 book, The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World, analyzes the historical and archaeological evidence underlying myths and tales of warlike women (Sarasvati Prize for Women in Mythology). Her biography of King Mithradates VI of Pontus, The Poison King, won the Gold Medal for Biography, Independent Publishers' Book Award 2010, and was a 2009 National Book Award Finalist. Mayor's other books include The First Fossil Hunters (rev. ed. 2011); Fossil Legends of the First Americans (2005); and Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, and Scorpion Bombs: Biological and Chemical Warfare in the Ancient World (2009, rev. ed. forthcoming). Commentators: Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer - Helen A. Regenstein Distinguished Service Professor of Classics and the Program in Gender Studies. Professor Bartsch-Zimmer works on Roman imperial literature, the history of rhetoric and philosophy, and on the reception of the western classical tradition in contemporary China. She is the author of 5 books on the ancient novel, Neronian literature, political theatricality, and Stoic philosophy, the most recent of which is Persius: A Study in Food, Philosophy, and the Figural (Winner of the 2016 Goodwin Award of Merit). She has also edited or co-edited 7 wide-ranging essay collections (two of them Cambridge Companions) and the “Seneca in Translation” series from the University of Chicago. Bartsch's new translation of Vergil's Aeneid is forthcoming from Random House in 2020; in the following year, she is publishing a new monograph on the contemporary Chinese reception of ancient Greek political philosophy. Bartsch has been a Guggenheim fellow, edits the journal KNOW, and has held visiting scholar positions in St. Andrews, Taipei, and Rome. Starting in academic year 2015, she has led a university-wide initiative to explore the historical and social contexts in which knowledge is created, legitimized, and circulated. Armand D'Angour is Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford. Professor D'Angour pursued careers as a cellist and businessman before becoming a Tutor in Classics at Jesus College in 2000. In addition to my monograph The Greeks and the New (CUP 2011), he is the author of articles and chapters on the language, literature, psychology and culture of ancient Greece. In 2013-14 he was awarded a British Academy Fellowship to undertake research into ancient Greek music, and in 2017 was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Prize for Public Engagement with Research. Professor D'Angour has since co-edited with Tom Phillips Music, Text, and Culture in Ancient Greece (OUP 2018), and in addition to numerous broadcasts on radio and television, a short film on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hOK7bU0S1Y) has reached over 650,000 views since its publication in December 2017. His book Socrates in Love: The Making of a Philosopher was published in April 2019, and How to Innovate: An Ancient Guide to Creating Change is due from Princeton University Press in 2021. Chaired by John Tasioulas, the inaugural Director for the Institute for Ethics and AI, and Professor of Ethics and Legal Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford. Professor Tasioulas was at The Dickson Poon School of Law, Kings College London, from 2014, as the inaugural Chair of Politics, Philosophy and Law and Director of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law. He has degrees in Law and Philosophy from the University of Melbourne, and a D.Phil in Philosophy from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He was previously a Lecturer in Jurisprudence at the University of Glasgow, and Reader in Moral and Legal Philosophy at the University of Oxford, where he taught from 1998-2010. He has also acted as a consultant on human rights for the World Bank.

Welcome to Face The Book TV, Season 2, Episode 20!Video recorded May 13, 2020 on our YouTube channel GUEST: Christopher Kenneally, Dir. of Marketing, Copyright Clearance CenterHOST: Charlotte Pierce, Pierce Press & Independent Publishers of New EnglandAUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: Sheryl Davis, author, The Mystical Magical Abracadabracal Daniel McDougal McDouglas McFlyMost independent publishers register a copyright and in any case, all creative works are copyrighted once created, without any registration at all. Easy, peasy, right? That's all fine until you are actually the victim of copyright infringement; then good luck finding the resources to bring a federal lawsuit. While the Copyright Act also offers the possibility of obtaining statutory damages and attorneys' fees, these benefits are not always available and may not be recovered until after a long court battle that can entail significant up-front costs. In a significant new development in this field, the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act of 2020 (the CASE Act) was enacted on Dec. 27, 2020. The CASE Act establishes a Copyright Claims Board (CCB) to hear copyright infringement matters and (1) caps damages at $30,000 total; (2) provides an opt-out option for the respondent; (3) includes streamlined procedures that limit discovery and rely mostly on written materials; (4) allows claims by both copyright owners and users for infringement and exceptions and limitations, respectively; and (5) includes additional fees for bad faith claimants and bars those who repeatedly abuse the system.COPYRIGHT OFFICEIMAGE SOURCE
The Indie Decision: Print-On-Demand vs. Print RunLivestream recording at https://piercepress.com/face-the-book-tvAs an indie publisher or author/publisher, you have an important decision to make if you're producing "real" books: print-on-demand (POD) or a digital or offset print run. Host Eddie Vincent, president of Independent Publishers of New England leads the conversation with Bailey Davis of Ingram Content Group and Brandie Herrell, Friesens Printing as they sort through the pros and cons of this all-important choice for indie publishers. Yes, you will pay more per copy with POD. Yes, you can still get good quality books printed. Yes, a digital or offset print run will require a larger up-front outlay of cash before you sell any books, although pre-sales can offset that hit. The good news is that over the past 15 years, the book industry has changed significantly with the introduction of digital printing and print on demand (POD). While the book industry has embraced digital printing, there are still common misconceptions about POD. We'll sift through these issues in this episode, and give you some practical resources to use going forward. Stu Levitan welcomes R. Richard (Dick) Wagner, author of We've Been Here All Along: Wisconsin's Early Gay History, covering the period from territorial days to the 1960s. It's from our friends at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, which in September will publish his companion volume, Coming Out, Moving Forward: Wisconsin's Recent Gay History. Some breaking news about volume one – it was just awarded the gold medal in the LGBT category by the Independent Publishers association. In 1982, under Republican Governor Lee Dreyfus, Wisconsin became the first state in the country to adopt a gay rights law, making discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation illegal. In 1983, under Democratic Governor Tony Earl, Wisconsin became the first state to have a Governor's Commission on Lesbian and Gay Issues. Wisconsin is the only state to have elected three openly gay members of Congress – 2 Democrats, 1 Republican. But the dairy state has not always been so friendly to non-normative sexuality. In fact, laws against gay sex predate the state. When the Wisconsin Territory was created in 1836, territorial legislators took the law against sodomy from the Michigan Territory and increased the penalty from three years to five. In 1905, the Wisconsin Attorney General called oral sex “this unspeakable offense,” ‘the infamous crime,' degrading and disgusting.” In 1928, the Supreme Court called sodomy “repulsive and detestable,” but “too prevalent to be ignored.” In the 1940s, Wisconsin criminalized even thinking gay, passing the Sexual Psychopath Law to prosecute people whose impulsiveness of behavior rendered them sexually irresponsible – whether or not they ever acted on those supposed impulses. Even that citadel of sifting and winnowing, the University of Wisconsin, got into the gay-bashing business, investigating hundreds of gay students in the fifties and early sixties, and sending many of them for therapeutic discipline. UW business manager A.W. Peterson even took the doors off the toilet stalls in the Bascom Hall men's rooms, to stop gay assignations. It's part of our state's history that most people, straight or gay, don't know, but should. Because a community cannot fully know itself, or be fully known by others, without knowing its history. As they say, you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. There is no one more qualified or appropriate to write this groundbreaking history of early gay life in Wisconsin than Dick Wagner, who is himself historic, as the first openly gay member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors. He even lives in a landmarked building on Jenifer Street which long before he came to town was a center of Madison gay life. Dick came to Madison as a graduate student in history in 1965, getting his doctorate in 1971. In 1972, Gov. Pat Lucey named him executive director of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. After Lucey resigned in the summer of 1977 to become Ambassador to Mexico, Dick ran the executive residence for Gov. Martin Schreiber until January 1979, when he joined the Department of Administration as a budget analyst. Dick retired from state service in 2005. In addition to serving on the Dane County Board from 1980-1994 – including four years as the first openly gay county board chair in Wisconsin – Dick's record of state and local public service is extensive. In 1983, Gov. Tony Early appointed him co-chair of the aforementioned Governor's Council on Lesbian and Gay Issues. That same year, he co-founded the New Harvest Foundation, a funding source for south central Wisconsin's LGBT communities. Dick stepped down last year as chair of the Madison Urban Design Commission, following service on the Plan Commission, Landmarks Commission, Wisconsin Arts Board, Wisconsin Humanities Council, and numerous other organizations. In recognition not just of his service but the way he served, Dick was named the first recipient of the city of Madison's Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award, in 2007. And on a personal note – I had the pleasure of serving with Dick on the Dane County Board from 1982-1987, and there is no one whose intelligence, integrity and decency I respect more. It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat my friend, Dick Wagner

Lama Tsomo, born Linda Pritzker, is an American teacher in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, an author, and a philanthropist living in western Montana. Her path of spiritual inquiry and study led to her ordination as one of the few female American lamas in Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Tsomo is known for her warm, candid and humorous teaching style. Fascinated by science from an early age, she often weaves research findings into her teachings. Her studies and teaching over the years have focused on these two questions: How can a spiritual awakening improve the chances that our world will be healed? And where can we find the insights and capacities to help each of us navigate life and be authentically happy? She is particularly passionate about reaching young people and supporting those working for positive social change. Born into a Midwestern Jewish household, Lama Tsomo is an heiress to the Pritzker family fortune via Hyatt Hotels and other enterprises. She had no interest in joining any of the family businesses. As a teenager, she discovered a passion for saving the environment after a summer of exploring the wilderness areas of Glacier National Park and other regions of the American west. She came to believe that a civilization built on an ever-growing demand for material things (and the natural resources required to produce them) does not result in happiness and well-being, and is not sustainable. She studied at Antioch University and earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a focus on Jungian analysis. As a young woman, she left Chicago and began a life as a homesteader in Wisconsin, where she raised goats, grew the family's vegetables, and brought up three children. She practiced as a Jungian therapist, and wrote a book about the place of women and girls in western mythology. She later moved to a rural community in the mountains of western Montana. Tsomo meditated for a number of years without any particular instruction or guidance. After a period of five years where she gave up meditating, she felt a desire to return to the practice but this time with instruction and guidance. She met Gochen Tulku Sangak Rinpoche, who carries the teaching of the Nyingma path of Tibetan Buddhism, at a 10-day retreat in Santa Fe. After hearing him teach she knew she had found the teacher she was seeking. Under Rinpoche’s guidance, Tsomo completed more than three years of solitary retreats. She also learned the Tibetan language, allowing her to converse directly with her teacher, using concepts not readily expressed in English. Rinpoche spent countless hours painstakingly teaching Tsomo the methods of Tibetan Buddhism that give her experience of this life deeper meaning and joy. After she achieved proficiency in all the levels of the Nyingma path, Rinpoche ordained her a lama in his monastery in Nepal in February of 2005 and again in a ceremony in his temple in Montana the following summer. Just after he ordained her, he spoke of her responsibility to pass these teachings along. Lama Tsomo is bringing the Nyingma form of Tibetan Buddhism to interested westerners by dedicating herself to teaching. With oversight provided by Rinpoche, she is building a Buddhist retreat center in Montana called the Namchak Retreat Ranch, where people can practice in total immersion in a beautiful natural environment. She also teaches Tibetan Buddhist practice to students at beginning and intermediate levels via free e-courses and in-person retreats in California and New York. She is passionate about helping students form community around meditation in small learning and practice circles found in the U.S. and abroad. Lama Tsomo often refers to having two inheritances. The first, her financial inheritance, she was given by her father. The second, her spiritual inheritance, she earned after years of study and retreats with Tulku Sangak Rinpoche. The two inheritances converge in the Namchak Retreat Ranch, which Rinpoche tasked her with creating. Tsomo was also a founding board member of the Ewam, a Tibetan Buddhist center located in Arlee, Montana. She is the author of the book Why Is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling?: A Westerner’s Introduction and Guide to Tibetan Buddhist Practice, which was a 2016 silver medal winner in the Independent Publishers’ Book Awards. In his foreword to the book, the Dalai Lama wrote that while Lama Tsomo outlines her personal journey into Buddhism, she continues to honor her traditional Jewish heritage. She is co-author of The Lotus and The Rose: A Conversation Between Tibetan Buddhism and Mystical Christianity (2018) with Reverend Matthew Fox, which consists of the co-authors’ conversations exploring the essentials principles shared by their traditions and the differences that distinguish them. Lama Tsomo was also a contributor to The Dharma of Dogs: Our Best Friends as Spiritual Teachers (2017), edited by Tami Simon. Join us in conversation with this wise and generous teacher!

Bridget Shine, CEO of the Independent Publishers Guild in the UK, is at the forefront of the revolution taking place in publishing today. In this week's episode we discuss what it means to be an independent publisher, and from the author's perspective, what it's like to be published by an independent publisher. The old rules and divisions are breaking down, and there are fantastic opportunities for those with the will and the energy to explore them. She also has some great tips for approaching independent publishers, and advice for those considering setting up as publishers themselves. And if you get lost in the definitions - indie authors, independent publishers, partner publishing - she takes a reassuringly pragmatic and positive approach: 'The point about the IPG... is we're all about helping one another and supporting each other and if you start getting a bit too ground down by those definitions you would get stuck very easily. For us, it's about people sharing, it's about the spirit of independence.'

Bio for Susan Gregg Susan was born and raised in two extremes. She was born in the fall after a very long, hot summer in New York City. When she was a teenager her family moved to a rural town in northern Vermont. The entire population was smaller than her 8th grade class so there was quite a culture shock. In 1972 she graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in Math. From the time she was a small child shed always felt there was more to life than she was able to experience with her five senses. In the mid-eighties she moved to San Diego where Susan met Sister Sarita and don Miguel Ruiz. She became their apprentice and actively studied with them for many years until she completed her training and became a Toltec Master and Nagual. Her studies with them totally changed her inner landscape and her experience of life. Susan went from being a depressed, often suicidal, lonely, fearful and unhappy person into a woman who lives life passionately and has a life filled with joy, love, and happiness. Hawaii was her first love so shortly after she finished her studies and received her doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy from the American Institute of Hypnotherapy in CA Susan moved to the island of Oahu. She began writing and opened a private practice assisting people in achieving personal freedom. In 1993, Susans first book Dance of Power was published. It is about her apprenticeship with don Miguel Ruiz and his mother Sister Sarita. Her second book Finding the Sacred Self is filled with exercises based on her studies. A Complete Idiots Guide to Spiritual Healing and her fourth book The Toltec Way: A Guide to Personal Transformation were released in July 2000. In 2003 her book Mastering the Toltec Way was released and in 2004 it won the Independent Publishers book award for the best new age book. Susan moved to the island of Hawaii and began studying Hawaiian spirituality with a wonderful woman called Mahealani Kuamoo-Henry. She is a Kumu Elele (teacher and messenger) for her ancestors. Her love, caring, humor, and wisdom have assisted Susan in creating a powerful synthesis between the ancient Hawaiian way of living and the Toltec tradition. Her book, A Complete Idiots Guide to Short Meditations offers you a variety of simple - yet powerfulmeditations designed to improve quality of life by quieting the mind. This book shows you how to feel like you have more time, how to enjoy life more deeply and passionately, and how to handle everyday life without stress. Her latest book The Encyclopedia of Angels, Spirit Guides and Ascended Masters shows readers how to access the wisdom of the ages and reminds us that everyone has a huge non-physical staff ready and willing to assist us in creating whatever we want. When asked about life Susan responded, My life is such an incredible gift, filled with magic and miracles. I am always amazed that a kid from Queens, New York is living it. When not writing or working with clients, Susan likes to spend time with the neglected and injured animals she has rescued over the years. Her love of animals also includes the wild dolphins she swims with.
