Kelly Hoey is a networking expert and author of Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World In this episode Lauren and Kelly discuss:Investing in your own career development as well as building a network in your industryDifferences between men and women's network structureRelying on your network during a career changeHow to connect with and remind your network about the value that you add to an organizationThe best way to stay connected with your network when you are going about your daily lifeNetworking mistakesStrategies in utilizing the various social media platforms for networking Key takeaways:Taking risks in the form of new opportunities can be a great way to advance your career, especially if you have a strong network to fall back on in case things don't work out.Men and women have different network structures, and both are important. Women typically use a narrow but deep network based on communication where they invest a lot of time in getting to know people, while men use a broad shallow network based on activity that doesn't have same depth in getting to know people. When creating a pitch, craft a short intro sentence followed by a pause to allow the other person to speak and say, “tell me more”. Focus on breaking up your information during delivery to allow the chance for dialogue/conversation.Be sure to follow up with people in your network that have offered mentoring/guidance; provide them with updates on your career journey so that they feel appreciated and so you can reach back out to them in the future, if needed.Continue to connect with your network periodically through posting/sharing information; commenting on other's posts; remembering birthdays; sending holiday cards; etc.Think of online networking the same as in-person networking and use each based on context. “By following up and following through, you are moving a relationship that might have been a one-and-done into a mentor relationship or strong sponsor situation.” – Kelly Hoey “Realize that your daily life activities are part of your networking toolkit. If we only think of networking as an activity we pick up because we are in a job search, that can be very alienating to people if you only show up when you need something.” – Kelly Hoey Reach out to Kelly at:Website: https://jkellyhoey.co/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kellyhoey/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jkhoeyInstagram: www.instagram.com/jkellyhoey/Get the book, Build Your Dream Network here:Amazon: https://amzn.to/3GleaFv Reach out to Lauren at:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurenherring/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LaurenHerringCareerExpertTwitter: https://twitter.com/laurenherringIMPACT Group Website: www.impactgrouphr.comEarn Your Worth Website: www.earnyourworthcareers.comIMPACT Group LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/impact-group/Earn Your Worth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/earn-your-worth-careers/Get the book, Take Control of Your Job Search here:Paperback Book: https://amzn.to/3tibaCzebook: https://amzn.to/3dk4Cy5

Featured in this week's episode of The Productive Designerhost Crystal Collinson with author and speaker J. Kelly Hoey.  Kelly started off a lawyer, but after many years on Twitter, she has since discovered her unique ability to combine networking and social media. She combined the digital age with the “analog” world, and she has unlocked the ability to create a new network without having to leave the house. In light of the pandemic and the need to meet virtually, she gives tips on how to best use your different platforms to work for you.  The biggest advice she has for anyone who is on social media is to stop thinking about social media being another alternate personality. Instead, your social media should be a reflection of who you are as a person. Depending on the platform, you can decide what piece of your personality you might share, but no matter the media, it should always be authentic. You should never be striving to be anyone other than yourself. Kelly also knows the power of networking, the right way. After meeting with someone, you should always send a quick email thanking them for the meeting. The second email afterward is most important and is often forgotten. The second email should be explaining what you did with the insight and information you were given. By doing so, you demonstrate that you listened and you took action. A simple follow-up status email shows that you are taking the time to show your appreciation. When taking time for others, people will notice. So, join Crystal and Kelly as they talk about social media, networking, and authenticity. And then, do something today that your future self will thank you for and check out J. You need to ditch the notion. When you need something like a job lead or a career lead, you need to think about it more in the sense of How do I interact with people every day? And well before the events of 2020, things we were doing every day - we're texting and tweeting and maybe posting on Facebook, maybe we're sending a birthday note or an anniversary wish. All that is part of your networking arsenal if you're someone who has been or had been in the workforce a long time. When I think about your networking, how have you shown up every day for your colleagues and co-workers? Were you a good mentor? Were you someone who was a good project manager? All of those activities to me are part of our networking reputation - and network building - that we have done throughout our lives. So for the listeners who may be thinking about a change or some evolution in their career, this is where I'd say sit back and think about how you've been showing up for your network every single day." On Generosity "Well, I think there's this underlying notion with networking: Give before you get. And I think there is this notion that people hold on with sort of an outdated version of networking reciprocity you feel as transactional in the sense of,...

Networking is all about people (obviously), but it can be easy to forget that when we're thinking about what we can get from the relationships in our lives while we should be thinking about what we can give - so how do you start networking with intentions and making sure they are the correct intentions? What to Listen ForWhy do you need to write a personal mission statement, and how do you go about constructing one?Why are you likely starting your day off on the wrong foot and what simple step can you take to start every day off on the right foot? Why is it so important to develop a plan with intention in how you go about your day? What questions should you be asking yourself each morning to set yourself up for success? How do you stay in touch after networking events with the people you meet at them? Why is it important in professional as well as personal relationships to regularly make exciting plans weeks or months in advance? What is a simple but powerful idea you can use to start building a solid network right before your next conference or networking event? What value can you offer to someone farther up the ladder of success than you?How do you deal with difficult people at work who refuse to cooperate if they don't get their way? What question can you ask someone who you're struggling to work with in order to move past the tension and conflict? We are human, and unless we make a conscious effort it can be easy for us to default to thinking about ourselves rather than others. However, when it comes to networking, the goal should not be to figure out “what you can get” from those you meet - but what you can give. You can make yourself stand out from the masses simply by putting effort into determining the value you can bring to those whose paths you cross. Understand the needs and wants, the hopes and fears of the people in your life, and go out of your way to help them and your network will know no bounds.A Word From Our SponsorsShare your vulnerabilities, victories, and questions in our 17,000-member private Facebook group at theartofcharm.com/challenge. I promised you that on the “Better Off” podcast, we would tackle uncomfortable, and even controversial, money and investing issues. And high up on the list of anxieties is trying to land a new job or move up the food chain in your existing workplace. Of course, it’s all about who you know and having connections. As someone who has been called a “natural networker,” I wholeheartedly cling to that concept. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70% of all jobs are found through networking. And because it’s a new year, a time when people often make changes, especially career changes, we thought it was a good idea to talk to networking expert Kelly Hoey. Kelly’s new book, Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World, has just been released and is perfect for anyone looking for networking and career advice. We have all heard that networking can be an effective and important tool, but Kelly emphasizes creating meaningful connections, defining your goal and honing on those who can help you form a strategy for connecting. Some of her tips include: 1) Determine the most effective ways to connect with others so you don’t clutter your calendar with dead-end coffee dates and informational interviews 2) Synchronize networking efforts with your digital outreach 3) Turn “closed door” conversations into strong personal relationships and business opportunities 4) Eliminate FOMO by keeping your networking efforts focused We also talk about how the rules have been rewritten now that we live in a digital world where our lives are dominated by Facebook, Twitter and apps. The book also includes a series of Q&As with some of the best networking experts in the business who share some invaluable advice based on their successes and failures. There's also a Build Your Dream Network reading guide. You can access it here.  “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment. As always, ratings and reviews matter in the podcasting world, so if you have a free minute, please leave us a rating in iTunes. Thank you!
