The Two Gay Geeks have a chat with Rasha Mohamed and Ayman Samman about their short film, Jumper, that will be making its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival on May 19th at the American Pavilion. They were selected to be a part of the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. We chat about who they are and their journey to making this short film with a powerful message. We want to thank our friend, Patricia Chica for putting us in touch with this dynamic filmmaking duo. They are going places. About Jumper Jumper follows a distressed crisis negotiator (Ayman Samman) who attempts to rescue - off the ledge - a young man (Mico Saad) who questions his sexual identity. Although the film tells the struggles of Middle Eastern LGBTQ individuals, its message of acceptance transcends cultural boundaries, and makes it undeniably universal. Jumper is helmed by Egyptian-American actor-director Ayman Samman. In this powerful yet intimate 11-min film, the subjects of sexual identity and suicide are trapped in a vertiginous dilemma between morality and choice, following tradition or following your heart. The short cautionary tale aims to spark a much-needed dialogue in the Middle Eastern community, while featuring dimensional, non-stereotypical characters from that group. Welcome back to Nothing Shines Like Dirt. Episode 57. Elise and Lesley sit down with Denise Cruz-Castino and discuss her film 5 Weddings, which premiered at Cannes International Film Festival, the League of Women Writers, and Dangerous encounters in India.
Cinefile with RFI's Rosslyn Hyams takes a look back at some of the main features of the Cannes Film Festival this month, a bumper edition in many ways. Also a feelgood pic pools India and French production talent in just released The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir directed by Ken Scott. The 2018 Cannes International Film Festival jury headed by actress and women's rights activist Cate Blanchett gave the Golden Palm to Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu's 13th feature, Shoplifters. The jury usually awards seven prizes but this year was special in that it awarded nine. The Best Scenario Palm went to to two best scripts, Alicia Rohrwacher's Happy as Lazarro and Jafar Panahi's 3 Faces which is one of the first Palm winners to go on general release in France since the festival, on 3 June 2018. A special one-off award was given to 87-year-old Jean-Luc Godard for his work, and for his intellectually and emotionally stimulating film entry in the Palm competition this year, The Image Book where he plays as much with sound levels as with images, colour and form. Besides the strong films from across the world which won the prizes, and some others which didn't, the festival pulled off a change of media focus. Ahead of the festival, screening time changes were not well-received and doomsday commentators thought the end was nigh because of this and other novelties. But, once into the event, action to further the cause of women's rights stepped into the spotlight, and the Cannes International Film Festival rediscovered its former glory. Two high-profile women-power demonstrations at peak viewing time, the at least-50-per-cent satisfying selection, as well as clinched deals in the market section, proved that the festival can thrive. It doesn't need former US producer Harvey Weinstein, now in the eye of the sexual-abuse and harrassement storm. Review - The Fakir's Extraordinary Voyage Looking for a charming but not entirely soppy film? The Fakir's Extraordinary Voyage could be the one to liven your spirits. Canadian Ken Scott of Delivery Man and Starbuck-fame has directed this Franco-Indian-Belgian coproduction, blessed by Sony International Pictures. As the hero says, "Chance is in the hand of cards that life deals you," and the production seems to be quite lucky to get such a boost. The hero Ajatashatru Oghash Rathod, performed by southern Indian actor, Dhanush, is a showman, and Dhanush's energy level and expressions keep the romcom on the move. As in a fairy-tale, Scott makes the impossible possible. He also makes fun out of difficult situations. Aja, the conman-tourist's life is a roller-coaster. Even when the hero is about to be deported from the UK as an illegal immigrant, Scott throws in a singing policeman routine. High points in The Fakir's Extraordinary Journey are some examples of Indian cinema's legendary dance routines, which Dhanush mixes with a touch of Michael Jackson and Saturday Night Fever nostalgia whisking Bérénice Béjo round a green- and purple-lit disco, postcard pretty scenes in Paris and Rome, the "I don't think I'm a lesbian" flat-mate-in-pyjamas scene, the singing policeman, and the way Scott has us laugh along with would-be migrants. The director also observes the hardships of migrants from Africa or elsewhere as they are shunted around and back to square one, if not worse. "If we get people to think about what the migrants go through and to realise that they are the same as everybody else, then we will have accomplished something," said Scott who also told me that he was sought out so that he would bring his trademark humour to the film. Released in France on 31 May 2018.
Meg and Grace talk about growing up in Austin, music, and working at the Cannes International Film Festival.
节目组:The Screen Age 荧屏时代 节目名称:Film Festivals and Awards开头曲 Queers(Main theme) S: Good evening, my dear audience. This is the time belongs to the Screen Age. I'm your old friend Shinskie Bee.L: This is Lynn. Well, Bee, Did you hear about some film awards like the Academy Award.S: Sure, it's too familiar to me.L: And today, it's a special program of the Screen Age. We'll introduce you some famous film festivals and awards.S: Wow, that's cool. I can't wait it. Let's get it started! 插曲1 Sol——Misha Mishenko S: In general. What is the most familiar to us is the Academy Award. It has a popular name, Oscar. This name came from an old librarian of the Academy of motion Picture and Sciences. One day, when she passed away from the golden status. She said surprisedly:” Wow, it's just looks like my uncle, Oscar. Occasionally, a reporter heard of her words and reported this the next day. The title of it is just the “the Academy of motion Picture and Sciences worker called the golden status, Oscar affectionately”. And then, the new name, Oscar has been more and more popular.L: The Academy Award was made by the Academy of motion Picture and Sciences. It's a American annual film award which commend film industry achievement. It could be a simple international standard to judge whether a film is good or not. It includes all kinds of films. It establishes more than 20 different awards.S:Besides, it is the oldest media awards in the world. It has become one of the most influential movie awards in the world. The annual awards ceremony will be lived in television in more than 100 countries. The position of it can be just like the Grammy Awards for music, the Emmy Award for TV dramas, the Tony Awards for plays in America. The Academy Award not only reflects the development and achievement of American film art, but also has great influence on film art in many countries in the world.L:The prize looks like a naked man whose hands fold on his chest and hold a sword. It stands in a ring disc which symbolize the important work department of each rings. They are represent the file's producers, directors, screenwriters, actors, and technical personnels.S:The winning list will be sealed. In the awards ceremony, no one has the right to know the results before the host opens it. This approach is an undoubtedly finishing touch of Oscar. It is a model for international film festival. Afterwards, it has become a model for many international film festivals.L:In the 89th the Academy Award ceremony, a famous own goal happened. The Best Motion Picture was announced as the La La Land at first. After that, When the media is in carnival, the organizing committee announced urgently that the Moonlight should win that prize. It's so funny that it happened in such an important film festival. 2 Sol——Misha Mishenko S: And now, we are going to introduce the three most famous international films festivals in Europe to you. They are Venice International Film Festival, Cannes International Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. L:First of all, Venice International Film Festival was found in 1932. Because it is the first film festival in the world. It is known as the father of international film festivals. It could be said that it is a cradle to plenty of film masters. The highest award of it is Golden Lion Award. By the way, it is held in Venice in August or September every year. S:The main aim of it is to improve the art level of the films. Actually, most of the Golden Lion Award was given to the men directors. As we know, The representative film of ethnic Chinese director, Ang Lee is Brokeback Mountain. It won the Golden Lion Award in 2006. In this year the film which won that award is The Shape of Water. And it is a great fairy tale to the adults. L: Cannes International Film Festival is one of the most influential international film festival in the world today. It was held in May every year in Cannes. It was found some special activity units. What is worth mentioning is Un certain regard and La Quinzaine des Realisateurs”. They attract a lot of potential and achieved directors. Besides, the Golden Palm Award is the highest award of it. The trophy was made like a golden palm too.S:The difference with The Oscars is that it doesn't have distinguish between in the leading role and the supporting role in actor awards. What's more, the script to that award also doesn't have distinguish between original and adaptation. The Square won the 70th Golden Palm Award. It told about the daily life of the middle class. It discussed whether the middle class's embarrassment leaded to the individual's discontent or the whole environment's anomic. L:The last one is Berlin International Film Festival. The Golden Bear is known as the highest award of it. It likes a bear raising one of its arms. The aim is to strengthen the communication with film workers. To avoid the Cannes International Film Festival, February is the new time to hold this film festival. From then on, although the audiences have to be wait coldly over there, they'd like to watch some better films. S:The most difference with others is that the best film decision is up to the common cinephiles. It wins great popularity because of it. The word ‘Berlinale' is short for the “Berlin International Film Festival”. In fact , it was made by a funny actress. 插曲3 Distant Lights——Serhat Arslan L: There are also some important but unfamiliar film festivals. Like the Sundance Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival and Hong Kong International Film Festival.S: The Sundance Film Festival, which is dedicated to Robert Redford's independent filmmakers, is growing in recent years. It is designed to encourage low-cost, independent production of the film, showing a great different interest with the Hollywood film. The Sundance Film Festival is organized by the Sundance Institute which consists of 25 members.L: Tokyo International Film Festival is a recognized by the International Film Festival, and it is as famous as Cannes International Film Festival, the Venice International Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival and other famous film festival, Asia's largest film festival. S: From the first session on, Tokyo International Film Festival have held 29 times, and the latest session will be held from October 25th to November 5th in Tokyo. L: Hong Kong International Film Festival, founded in 1977 by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Association, is Hong Kong's largest film industry event, Asia's top non-competition international film festival, known as the "A Film Festival of Film Festival", usually Held in mid-March to early April. 4 Distant Lights——Serhat Arslan S: How time flies! It's time to say goodbye again.L: That's all for today's program. Hope you like this special one.S: And we're going to make more special ones for you. I'm too excited to do it.L: Yep. Have a nice evening. See you next time. S:See you!

Don't miss it!

Welcome to another episode of The Behind The Scenes Show with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This week we take a special long look at Cannes and check out the 'UP' premiere with ace correspondent Phillip Nakov! Cannes isn't only for movie premieres though, aspiring directors will go there to present their projects and try and get them funded, as was the case with Iron Sky. Finally we take a look 'Wrong Side of Town' starring WWE superstars Rob Van Dam and Batista, check it out! First off we are in Cannes for the premiere of 'UP', correspondent Phillip Nakov was AT the premiere! Its the first time an animated movie has opened the festival and its gotten pretty good reviews. Its the movie about Carl Fredricksen. He spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. Next we have 'Iron Sky'. This one is a bit of an enigma because its still in pre-production without funding! But it looks HILARIOUS so we'll give it a shot! Towards the end of World War II the staff of SS officer Hans Kammler made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. Welcome to another episode of 'The Behind The Scenes Show' with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This week we take at three movies that premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival. First its Jim Carrey's 'A Christmas Carol', followed by a look at 'Agora' and Quentin Tarantinos 'Inglourious Basterds'. Charles Dickens' timeless tale of an old miser who must face Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help to bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what the world is today, and what will happen if he does not strive to be a better man. Set around Christmas, the most joyous day of the year, Scrooge realizes the sharp contrast of his own personality. Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of A Christmas Carol. Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). His dynamic character roles keep the four characters as diverse as being played by four actors. Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future trilogy) has his chance to dabble in telling a story through the windows of time, as he directs the long-awaited remake. In theaters Nov. 6, 2009. A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria. Directed by Alejandro Amenábar and starringRachel Weisz and Max Minghella Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Hello MovieSetters and welcome to our all-Cannes edition of The Behind the Scenes Show with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This webisode we are looking at some of the different movies that are being focused on in Cannes. Specifically we are going to talk about the new Pixar movie 'UP' followed by a look at Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' and the new movie 'Taking Woodstock'.First off we look at 'UP' which is the opening film for the Cannes International Film Festival. Its the first time an animated motion picture has been the opening film for the prestigious festival so its quite an honor. By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.'Inglourious Basterds' begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own..."Taking Woodstock" is a 1969-set story, based on Elliot Tiber's memoir, about a man, Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin), who inadvertently played a role in making the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed happening it was. Working as an interior designer in Greenwich Village during culturally and politically exciting times, Mr. Tiber felt empowered by the gay rights movement. But he was also still staked to the family business - a Catskills motel. Upon hearing that a planned concert had lost its permit from the neighboring town of Wallkill, NY, Mr. Tiber called producer Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff) at Woodstock Ventures to offer his family's motel, the El Monaco, to the promoters. Soon the Woodstock staff was moving into the El Monaco; half a million people were on their way to Mr. Tiber's neighbor's Max Yasgur's (Eugene Levy) farm in White Lake, NY; and Mr. Tiber found himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life, and American culture, forever.Be sure to check out more Behind the Scenes as well as Previous Episodes!Subscribe to behind the Scenes in iTunes or by Email
