As a child, I tried to sign up for Little League, and they said, “No” you're a girl. And I remember thinking: That's not right. It hurt me in my heart. -Digit Murphy Margaret Pearl “Digit” Degidio Murphy admits that as a child, she cried when she couldn't play baseball or ice hockey just because she was a girl. As she skated alone around local ponds in her hometown of Cranston, Rhode Island, Digit knew she could be a champion. A scrappy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, she decided to never give up trying and, in the wake of crucial changes thanks to #title9, continued to break down barriers for women and girls in sports. A student athlete at Cornell, Digit was named Ivy League Player of the Year, finishing her college career with 123 goals and 90 assists. Digit loved the sport so much, she coached at Brown University for 23 seasons and holds the record as the winningest ice hockey coach in NCAA Division 1 history. But as she climbed the ladder in sports, Digit experienced pay inequality herself and fought for Olympic ice hockey athletes to be paid for the very first time. She would go on to coach on the pro level in the US, Canada, and China, with a philosophy focused on leading, guiding, and directing athletes. Says Digit: “You are like a conductor creating energy. You give your athletes a roadmap and the keys to the car, and then you let them drive.” In this interview, Digit takes us for a wild ride through a career in ice hockey that stands alone when it comes to creating opportunities for females: “Half a loaf is not enough. We cannot lose what we fought so hard to have. You have to have gritty, intestinal fortitude in order to continue to push boundaries, and I'd like to see all women doing that in all areas of sport.” For 25 minutes of true grit, just hit that download button. digitmurphy.com. @digitmurphy @usahockey

ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 10, Episode 23, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, we continue our previous discussions of Title IX and advocating for our kids throughout their academic years from kindergarten through college with attorney, Nancy Hogshead-Makar. Nancy is an Olympic champion, a civil rights lawyer, and the founder and CEO of Champion Women, a non-profit providing legal advocacy for girls and women in sports. Focus areas include equal play, such as traditional Title IX compliance in athletic departments, sexual harassment, abuse and assault, as well as employment, pregnancy and LGBT discrimination within sport. Hogshead-Makar is leading an effort turn the Olympic Movement back into a service-oriented, athlete-centric non-profit, one who’s corporate structure protects athletes from physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse. She is the Co-Chair of the Committee to Restore Integrity to the USOPC and United States Olympians and Paralympians Unbroken, comprised of 545 Olympians, Paralympians and elite athletes, sexual abuse survivors, coaches, sport leaders, child protection and civil rights organizations. Team Integrity and USOPU provided legal memos and white papers to members of Congress, the USOPC staff and Board, and the media on the opaque operations and legal structure of the Olympic Movement. She actively participated in all four major reports of the Nassar debacle. Two federal laws have already resulted from this athlete-activism: the SafeSport Act, signed into law in February, 2018 and the Empowering Olympians, Paralympians and Elite Athletes Act of 2020, signed October, 2020. It is no wonder Sports Illustrated recently listed her as one of “The Unrelenting; the most powerful, most influential and most outstanding women in sports right now – the game-changers who are speaking out, setting the bar and making a difference.” As an internationally recognized legal expert on sports issues, Hogshead-Makar has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic of gender equity in athletics, and written numerous scholarly and lay articles. Her book, co-authored with Andrew Zimbalist, EQUAL PLAY, TITLE IX AND SOCIAL CHANGE, has received acclaim since its release by Temple University Press. She was the lead author of PREGNANT AND PARENTING STUDENT-ATHLETES; RESOURCES AND MODEL POLICIES, published by the NCAA. She serves as an expert witness in Title IX, sexual abuse, violence and harassment cases and writes amicus briefs representing athletic organizations in precedent-setting litigation. Hogshead-Makar has been teaching sports law related courses for 20 years. In this episode, Terry talks with Nancy Hogshead-Makar, an Olympic champion who won three gold medals in swimming and then went on to become a women's rights attorney and founder of Champion Women, a nonprofit advocacy organization for women and girls in sports. Nancy has been a leader in recent efforts to protect Olympic athletes from sexual harassment and sexual assault. She helped lead the fight to pass the Safe Sport Act of 2017 which created the U.S. Center for Safe Sport. And she’s also a leading advocate in the effort to create a power shift that gives athletes more information and say-so about the policies and practices in their sport.
Nancy Hogshead-Makar won 3 golds and a silver at the 1984 LA Olympic Games. She received a law degree from Georgetown and has devoted her life to fighting for gender equity in sports. Three years before her Olympic triumphs, Nancy was brutally raped while attending Duke University. She feared she was too emotionally damaged to swim again, but the support of her coach and community in getting her back in the water after this trauma ultimately saved her life and her sanity. Nancy uses these profound life experiences as the CEO of Champion Women, an organization leading targeted efforts for equality and accountability in sport. Thanks to the tireless efforts of her team, in 2018, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and SafeSport Authorization Act was finally enacted. Nancy continues to fight for the rights of women athletes every single day.

In this episode, we're going to be tackling the topic of “Men Who Champion Women” trend that's been emphasized by the recent “Me Too” movement. Movies made in the past few years (Roger Ailes, Harvey Weinstein) that center around women who are supported by male industry moguls, as well as noticing, for example, Fox News anchors who are women, but their roles and positions come with the price of exploitation. These roles are limited in scope and range and tend to typecast these actresses as objects. We also discuss the trend on the music side of the industry and how a lot of female artists including Demi Lovato, Kesha, and many others are impacted by this system. This episode is from the vault and was first released November 20, 2017. Dr. Newton wants to educate people on how medications can cause dementia. Also, how to avoid these medications. The only thing worse than having dementia is taking care of a loved one with dementia. Many people do not realize that many medications can cause dementia. Dr. Camille Newton is a home visiting physician. You may also know it as a traveling doctor or mobile doctor. It is such an important service for seniors that are not able to travel for the doctor’s appointments. She focuses on minimizing medications. Especially psychotropic pharmaceuticals, to help senior brains stay healthier longer. Medications get tested by the FDA to see if they are safe. But those medications are not really tested to see if they cause brain failure. While performing house calls, she has seen the effect psychotropic medications have on people who take them for a long period. Some examples of psychotropic drugs are: * Antipsychotics including Risperdal or Haldol * Sedatives especially the benzodiazepines such as Ativan, Xanax, or Valium * Anti-depressants * Antihistamines These are some staggering and scary statistics! According to Dr. Newton, using Benzodiazepine increases the risk of Dementia. Nearly tripling risk within 3 years. Quitting reduces risk over time, to only 10% increase in risk 3 years after quitting. Benzodiazepine use quadruples the risk of suicide in the elderly. In one study, Benzodiazepines and hypnotics increased suicide risk by 14 times. Antihistamines can have an anticholinergic effect. This means some of them block a certain neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This can have a detrimental effect on the brain over a long period. This includes Benadryl. In monkeys, laboratory rats, and humans, antipsychotics such as Haldol showed a huge measurable shrinking of the brain within 8 weeks of use. A person goes to the drugstore and they have allergy symptoms. They could choose Claritin or Allegra (which are not anticholinergic). Also, they could choose Benadryl or Coricidin and end up with dementia within a few years. Maybe less is more? Dr. Newton tells a fascinating story about “Pam” who has a rare case of dementia reversed by getting her off of her medications. Although she has had only a few cases of ‘total cure’, she's had many patients improve when taken off from anticholinergics. These medications are so dangerous to our brains, and yet there is no warning label. Many of them are over the counter. A lot of people ask Dr. Newton, “What Can I take?” Her response is, don't look for something to take when you are having a problem. Don't look for a pill to solve your problem and question every medication given. *Please note: Neither the Rock Your Retirement Show nor the host, Kathe Kline provides medical advice. Please consult your own practitioner about any healthcare issues that you have. About Our Co-Host Dr. Newton cares for complicated elderly patients in their homes through her medical practice, Home Excel Physician’s Group. She is also the founder and former president of Pure Wick Corporation. It's a manufacturer of non-invasive, external urinary catheters for women. (Pure Wick was recently sold to C.R. Bard). An Attending Physician for Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital Residents in Family Medicine. Also, for Kaplan University School of Nursing. She is board-certified in family medicine. A Member of the American Academy of Home Care Physicians, and a Gulf War Veteran. She is also an Athena Pinnacle Award winner. This is an honor given to exemplary female executives in San Diego–for ‘Women who Champion Women’. She studied Genetics at U.C. Davis, where she graduated with honors. She completed her medical education at Saint Louis University and Residency at U.C. Irvine.

Nancy has been in the world of sexual abuse when it comes to the club and Olympic sports for 8 years now. She shares the reasons that it has taken this long for policies to be made to protect these athletes. * The gymnasts that came forward changed the world of sport. Because of them, there is now a statue that gives the USOC, and US Center for Safe Sport a legal duty to take care of athletes. Nancy updates us on the changes that have occurred since the gymnasts have come forward. * What are the red flags that athletes and parents can be aware of: when a coach is alone with them, that they give them a gift, texting them individually, friending them on social media that can make abuse possible. Women make up less than 5 percent of the CEOs at S&P 500 companies. Yet, virtually every financial study conducted since the 1980's on the financial performance of companies that have women on their boards and on their executive teams, have shown that sharing leadership with women produces superior financial performance in organizations. There are few, if any, thought leaders who have written specifically to men on how they become more gender-intelligent and what they can and should do to advance women into leadership roles. Finally, we have advice for National Governing Bodies if they want to stop repeating the vicious cycle they are in. Enjoy. Here is a way to catch up with some of Eva's story. After posting, Eva did want to let me and everyone else know that she endorses the "Darkness to Light" training that is also endorsed by Champion Women and Aly Raisman.Permalink
Tammy Bruce, president of Independent Women's Voice, and Cathy Areu, author, journalist, and founding publisher of Catalina Magazine, discuss the launch and importance of Champion Women. Too often on social media, in public, and in the news people try to diminish the influence, perspectives, and policy solutions put forth by women by degrading their appearance and delegitimizing their qualifications. Champion Women pushes back and calls out those who objectify, dismiss, or degrade women. We're in this for the long haul to stop the objectification of women, encourage civil discourse, and push for concrete changes so that all women are treated with dignity and respect. We break it all down simply enough that even we can understand. USOC CEO apologizes Fran Sepler made some statements. And they were a PROBLEM. To summarize, the investigator for USAG just—hypothetically—admitted that she didn't report to police or CPC a child molester who was still working with kids. USAG did... after 5 weeks. Deanna Hong's phenomenal documentary piece, Why I Spoke Up: Rachael Denhollander WHAAAAA? A new team-final format was slipped into the FIG's updated technical regulations, and we love it. New seniors intro video American Cup - Ragan Smith and Riley McCusker THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW Nancy Hogshead-Makar former professor of Sports Law and head of women's sports advocacy group, Champion Women, joins us to interpret our strong feelings about the Legendres interview from last week's show. We discuss (36:10): How did USAG allegedly fail the Legendres? Lack of a standard and professional protocol for the entire process Focus on individual athlete rather than safety for all future athletes Should be given the whistleblower policy in writing and have an advocate (or ombudsman) present to advise them of their rights What can parents and club owners learn from this? Liability falls to the institution when alcohol is involved and your insurance company will probably not cover you. Beware the Waiver: Imagine your child is abused, the coach is found guilty and you have agreed to pay for his lawyers You're The Boss: How to talk to kids about permission for physical contact Athletes must have permission to say NO to their coaches Thinking of an athlete like a solider is inappropriate. Lack of Oversight There is no unified process or government agency that can remove abusers from coaching Prisoners have more rights than athletes representing the U.S. SafeSport Independent Ethical Firewall between victims and the organization Power to enforce policies USA Gymnastics Sexual Abuse Investigation Update (1:03:34) Fallout from the Legendre interview in last week's episode Vitaly Marinitch reportedly no longer at the Olympic Training Center boys program. Nancy Hogshead-Makar has been at the forefront of women's rights issues in sports for over 40 years, including her time as a champion swimmer with a No. 1 ranking at age 14. Hogshead-Makar has now formed a new advocacy group, Champion Women, with the set purpose of ensuring that female athletes have the same rights and equality as male athletes in high school and college athletics. Her conversation over Title IX presents several straw man arguments as to what gender equality is, and transforms into a frank discussion of why, after 42 years, compliance still hasn't been achieved.
