We're the Ones Lamenting: James McGrath on Reading Revelation from Inside the Empire

Welcome to TBC 26 FM, the post-apocalyptic radio station broadcasting from the wasteland of late modern America. James McGrath — the Religion Prof himself — was the right guest for the apocalyptic-themed Theology Beer Camp preview, because he wrote Theology and Science Fiction, he loves some Battlestar Galactica, and he spent a full year of sabbatical thinking about nothing but the New Testament's best apocalyptic preacher. We got the post-apocalyptic factions workshopped (James thinks the sorting needs a Hunger Games battle), then we went where the actual apocalypse lives: what John the Baptist was actually preaching in Second Temple Judaism, why apocalyptic literature always gets the end wrong and why that is a feature rather than a bug, why American Christians reading Revelation as horror instead of hope says everything about which side of the ledger we are on, what AI actually is under the hood and what it does to the way we read scripture, how James teaches a course called The Bible and Misinformation by fooling his own students on day one with AI-generated footage of himself announcing the discovery of the Ark of the Covenant, and — the part that will stay with me — what he says to the person whose evangelical faith is collapsing and who wrote me terrified. James's answer: that thing you thought was faith was actually doubt. Come for the Andor riff. Stay for the pastoral turn. So much pain has been inflicted in the name of God. We have been deeply hurt, we get triggered and, understandably, we want nothing to do with any of it - even Jesus. But, let's be clear, what has been used to hurt us has been absolute lies, false teachings and is not about God or Jesus! One of the worst things that ever happened to Jesus was the religion of Christianity, and non-affirming Christians have largely gotten him totally wrong. Jesus is still one of the best-kept secrets because his truth has been grossly distorted by people who claim to speak for him. There is a religion-free Jesus who belongs to all of us!Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

In this series finale of the Menlo Midweek Podcast, Matt Summers and Phil EuBank wrap up seven weeks of exploring the world's major worldviews by turning their focus directly toward the heart of Christianity: the Gospel. Reflecting on the journey from Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Mormonism, Catholicism, and Agnosticism, this episode draws a stark line between every human transaction, where we try to perform, prove, or bribe our way to God and the true Gospel, where God reverses direction and gives us a way home. Matt and Phil unpack how religion acts as humanity's attempt to climb back to Eden, why the distinction between a bribe and a gift matters so deeply, and how even well-meaning Christians accidentally turn grace back into performance.

The guys talk about the latest with the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham, and trans women (biological males) in women's sports. They look into the Socialist takeover of the Democrats, the appeal of socialism, and how a third of Democrats say they welcome socialism. And the guys talk about the upcoming sequel to the 2007 book "The Shack" due out in October of this year. Many Christians embraced the first novel's un-biblical theology of Universalism, and there is a warning to Christians to not fall for the feel-good counterfeit Christianity of this new sequel the way so many did with the first book in 2007.

This episode challenges us to move beyond passive Christianity and live with a supernatural love that actively seeks opportunities to honor God and serve others.

One used to see it on bumper-stickers, "Christianity is a relationship, not a religion." Why do Evangelicals sell it that way? More carefully, is that even true? In this cast o' the pod I define what the word religion means and explain why all Christians should, in fact, be proud to proclaim that following Jesus is, indeed, their religion, their rule of life. To make the point I note several ways by which we can make Christianity our rule of life. All of that is side "B" of the show. Side "A" is an unearthing of the whys and whats of our secular culture's take on religion. For at least 200 years Western culture has tried to diminish religion as the "private stuff" people privately believe in "they" heads. And frankly, we expect that from a culture that hates God. What we don't expect is that the church herself is pretty adept at cutting the branch she is sitting on out from beneath her. How so? I explain that and so much more.

It's a memory machine, a network of elders, a parish rhythm, and a shared story that tells your kids who they are. When that breaks, everything else gets easier to break too.We start with a clip-driven conversation that spirals into a bigger question: how do narratives and propaganda reshape what a nation believes it is? Using the Darryl Cooper conversation as a jumping-off point, we talk about “myth” not as fantasy, but as the framing stories that decide what you're allowed to say, what you're allowed to defend, and what you're trained to fear. From there we connect identity to faith, especially the Catholic instinct to see ourselves in a long historical line of saints, martyrs, and Christendom. Then we get concrete about urban planning and social engineering. We discuss how suburbanization and mid-century “renewal” projects, including the Robert Moses era in New York, fractured ethnic Catholic neighborhoods and dispersed parish communities into isolated households. Once people are cut off from community, mass media and institutional pressure work far better. We also wrestle with the internet as a double-edged sword: it can reveal truth and help believers find each other, but it can also turn Christianity into content instead of lived community. We close by talking about fear and preparedness: why “collapse” may look less like a movie and more like financial leverage, digital currency, and normalized control. Along the way we touch on civil conflict, division, martyrdom, and a listener question on millennials going no contact with parents, including the difference between boundaries and unnecessary rupture. Are you the enviable sort of person who was born with an innate sense of direction? Some of us know instinctively whether we are traveling North, South, East, or West. And some of us...would be lucky to find our way out of a paper bag, even with a map in hand.If you've ever been lost on a country road at dusk, no road signs, no one to ask for help, and no idea which way to turn — you know how very useful it is to have directions. You're burning daylight, and you aren't sure how to get back to civilization.Or maybe you've driven to a job interview in a new city. Unfamiliar cross streets, busy traffic, and the sound of blaring horns can be a distressing soundtrack when you're trying to pinpoint one office building among many.Romans 14:8 says, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”When we're living for the Lord, we have a North Star to guide us on our way. When you aren't sure which road to take, or which choice to make, remember Who you live for. Ask the Lord to direct your path, to keep you safe from harm, and to be present every step of the way. Country roads, bustling city thoroughfares, and life itself are all so much more enjoyable when we navigate them with Jesus.Let's pray.God, forgive us for those times we prove ourselves aimless on the road of life. Spielberg's film Disclosure Day takes on the narrative of the recently released government UFO files. Speculation claims that what Spielberg aimed for was to shake up the Christian faith by his documentation of possibility of aliens from other planets. These extraterrestrials woud prove to Christians that biblical Christianity is false. But that's not what Spielberg necessarily said. We examine the premise of the movie as well as what the disclosed government files tell us. Comparing the two we see where facts end and speculative fiction begins.

Friends, for this Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear the story of the Syrophoenician woman. Jesus famously puts off this woman—first by ignoring her, then by dismissing her, and finally by insulting her—and she offers one of the most famous comebacks in literary history. A common reading of this story is that Jesus is cranky from a tough day of ministry, and a plucky woman from Syrophoenicia straightens him out. But this turns Jesus into a sinner—and the whole structure of Christianity falls apart. The Church Fathers had a much better, more convincing, and spiritually more helpful interpretation.

True Biblical Worship vs. Strange Fire: What Does God Really Want? | KIB 543 DESCRIPTION Welcome to Kingdom Intelligence Briefing Episode #543 with Dr. Michael Lake and Mary Lou Lake. What does God actually desire from those who worship Him? Modern Christianity often defines worship primarily through music, singing, emotional experiences, and church services. But Scripture presents something far deeper. True biblical worship is not merely an event we attend—it is a covenant lifestyle of reverence, obedience, holiness, truth, thanksgiving, humility, service, repentance, and wholehearted devotion to God. In this episode, Dr. Michael Lake examines the biblical theology of worship from both the Old and New Testaments. Psalm 24 reveals the necessity of clean hands and a pure heart, while Jesus declares that the Father is seeking those who will worship Him "in spirit and truth." This teaching also confronts a serious problem within modern Christianity: worship can become religious performance while the believer's daily life remains disconnected from God. Scripture reveals that obedience itself is worship. Holiness is worship. Serving others can become worship. Thanksgiving is worship. Repentance restores true fellowship with God. Even studying Scripture to discover what pleases God becomes an expression of devotion to Him. Dr. Lake also examines Cain, Nadab and Abihu, Saul, Uzziah, and Israel's golden calf to demonstrate a sobering biblical principle: sincerity does not give humanity the authority to redefine worship. God determines how He is to be worshiped. The episode concludes with a warning that much of contemporary worship risks producing "strange fire" rather than Christlikeness—and a call for the Remnant to return to worship that transforms the worshiper and exalts God alone. IN THIS EPISODE: • Why worship is a lifestyle rather than an event • What it means to worship God in spirit and truth • The Hebrew and Greek concepts behind biblical worship • Why obedience is an act of worship • Why God requires holiness from His worshipers • The relationship between thanksgiving, praise, and worship • Why biblical study itself can become an act of devotion • How religious performance can replace genuine worship • Why worship must remain God-centered rather than man-centered • Cain, Nadab and Abihu, Saul, Uzziah, and unauthorized worship • The danger of "strange fire" in the modern Church • How true worship produces transformation and Christlikeness • Why worship and obedience are powerful components of spiritual warfare Mary Lou also discusses prayer, spiritual warfare, and the importance of recognizing that the heavens belong to Almighty God—not the powers of darkness. The episode opens with a call for believers to respond to spiritual opposition by declaring biblical truth and magnifying the Creator rather than fearing the enemy. It might be trying to encourage new members to join the church. It might literally be a building project or helping to start or plant a new church. It could be helping the whole membership grow spiritually. The odd thing is that all too often when you and other church members are focused on building, rebuilding, growing spiritually, and expanding the reach of your church, there are others who oppose this progress.Sometimes the opposition comes from outside the church, but there are times the resistance actually comes from inside the church organization itself. In this week's episode, we're going to look at Examples in the Bible where there was resistance to those who were building the church How they overcame it How you can use these same ideas to overcome any resistance and opposition to spiritual progress at your churchJesus's promise about his church that is a game changer Never be afraid of opposition to your church's progress. This week is a special episode. First, we're kicking off a brand-new miniseries of films curated by friend of the show and professor Rev DeAnna Daniels, PhD. It's an opportunity for us to more directly engage our values, in expanding our FoG family in more deliberate ways, and in elevating horror-themed cinematic works that directly feature voices and experiences that grow our spirits, our minds, and our capacity to love all of God's FoGgers better.Kicking off this special series is coverage of a film that wouldn't necessarily be considered horror on its surface. HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL. is a film centering on a pastoral couple (Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall) who formerly lead a booming megachurch ministry before a scandal obliterated their influence and scattered their congregants elsewhere. The film, told in a mockumentary style, follows their aim to recapture their former glory -- in the name of the Lord, of course -- and the seemingly unconquerable obstacles in their path. We're joined by DeAnna as series curator and her friend Dr. Indhira Udofia, an interdisciplinary educator and scholar whose work is committed to cultivating spaces where justice, leadership, and healing converge. It's a hearty and robust conversation (among the lengthiest in FoG history), in which we each vulnerably and thoughtfully discuss church, faith, and the captivating intersection where the divine and the monstrous are sometimes indistinguishable. We really hope you'll open your ears and your hearts for this one, and we really hope you enjoy it.7:11 - Two Questions with Indhira UdofiaPatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?21:28 - HONK FOR JESUS. It was late at night, and Kelly's family was on the way to visit family out of state. It was raining, and they had just entered a construction zone. Narrow two-lane traffic became even narrower as they entered a bridge.Suddenly, a deer materialized in the headlights. Orange cones and flashing lights indicated there was nowhere to go other than right off the side of the bridge, and at 55 miles per hour, they were headed right for the animal.Romans 14:8 says, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”Time slowed down, and Kelly prayed aloud for her family's safety in that frightening moment. “Lord, help us!” They bumped loudly over the top of the deer, jarring everyone in the car in the process. Their vehicle suffered damage, but the occupants were safe.On the road of life, you may get pulled over for speeding. You may hit an icy patch, slipping and sliding to a stop. You may even crash and burn. Faith in God doesn't guarantee an easy journey, but following Jesus means we live knowing God has a plan for our lives and a place with him in eternity at the end of the road.Let's pray.Heavenly Father, be present with us in calm and in crisis. We pray you lead us down a path that reminds us continually to live for you. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world!
